Question: Research pane missing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Research pane missing

You mean the search box in which you would enter a search word or phrase for an Internet search, right? It normally appears to the right of the web address box. Is your web address box displayed? How much width of your browser window does it use when your browser window is maximized? What do you see at the right of the web address box?

My Excel 2007 appears to have developed a fault.
After a few minutes of use (variable amount of time - 1 to 5 minutes) the Research "search for" pane pops up by itself whenever I press ALT+ENTER or click on a cell. I can turn if off again from the Review tab, but as soon as I press ALT+ENTER, another key or cell, it pops back up again. This makes Excel unusable and I am forced to exit then re-launch Excel, to allow another few minutes of use before the bug reappears. It happens with any spreadsheet.

This has only just started to happen after 1 year of use. I have no idea
what is causing it or how I cure the problem. Does anyone have any
experience of this? I've tried re-installing Excel and restoring my computer to an earlier date, but neither worked.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Every few minutes or even SECONDS, this stupid Research Pane pops up and makes using excel completely useless and frustrating.
I can't do anything, it's as if my ALT key is randomly being held down by itself.

Whether I click a cell, or type something, or restart my computer, or exit excel, this error yet occurs. Every single time I use it.

All i've found was this:

Greetings -A customer of mine recently noticed that his installation of MS Word 2003 Professional (Windows XP, SP2) would not display any results for his thesaurus. Until recently, he had not tried to use the Thesaurus, so it is not known if it worked before. Upon further inspection, I found that the context menu (right-click menu) would display the first layer of thesaurus results for a selected word, however clicking on the "Thesaurus" option in the context menu (which brings up the research task pane) would prompt Word to install an additional component. The installation box would come up for a moment, a progress bar would indicate that it was installing, and then would finish and dissapear. The research pane, however, would not display any results, no matter what word was used. Any of the other research options selected (by using the drop down on the research pane, underneath the word being searched) would result in the same process, along with the same failure. I have included three screenshots appended to one another in the following link. Another computer using the same version of Office 2003 professional (installed in the same exact manner, also Win XP SP2) on the customer's home network works just fine. Multiple reinstallations, and deletion of files (namely, %system root%\docume~1\%current user%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\%various folders and subfolders associated with office%) have proven unsuccessful, ... Answer:Ms Word 2003 - Thesaurus (research Pane) Will Not Display Any Results

Hi Robert.
Does the spell checker work or is it gone too?
By default, Office will install the "Research" add-on in IE. If nothing else, it should find on-line results, provided the add-on is installed and enabled in IE (Tools>Manage Add-Ons) and a site is selected via the "research options" selection in the lower right corner under the Research pane in Word. There is also the local source options there as well. Take a look.
If worse comes to worse, remove and re-install the office proofing tools.
To do so, select Office in Add\remove. Click the "Change" button.
Select "Add or Remove Features" and click the "Next" button.
Place a check in the "Choose Advanced Customization of Applications" option and click the "Next" button.
Navigate to: Office Shared Features>Proofing Tools>English.
Left click each sub option and choose "Not Available". Click the "Update" button and follow the prompts.
To re-install, go back to the same spot and choose "Run from My Computer" on each of the options.
Insert the cd if prompted.

Windows XP. Outlook 2002. Preview Pane is missing from the View tab in the new folders that I created.

I had a personal folder(.pst) created a while ago and I used to be able to view the messages for that folder in the Preview Pane window. The folder got too big and I had to chop it to smaller folders. In doing so, The top folders that I created do not have Preview Pane show up in View tab. But, when I moved the existing sub-folders under the new folders or create sub-folders under the new folders, these sub-folders have Preview Pane.

The BAD solution was to create a TEMP sub-folder under each high level folder and forward all the message to it, but I would rather send all my message to the top folders.

Thanks in advance,

Hi, Usually repairing Internet Explorer fixes this issue.

Read the following, all the way down to the bottom!

If you have XP, there is another method: Since XP comes with IE 6, the entry for IE does not show in Add/Remove Programs, and you cannot run the repair utility from> try this:

Read about it first!

Start button>Run

Type in the run line this:[cmd] and hit Enter key once.

Type this next to the cursor in the black box:

sfc /scannow (one space after the c) and hit Enter key once again.

Let the System File Checker run, it will take awhile, then it will NOT give any messages...either it works, or it doesnt.

For other than XP, win2000, etc:

The IE Repair utility is available if you have upgraded Internet Explorer from the original installed version> take a look in Add/Remove Programs, and if you see this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (someversion) and Internet Tools, just hit Add/Remove> we arent uninstalling anything, you will see 3 options then> hit "Repair this version of IE" and let the utility run to completion. You will see a message that tells you either it fixed something, or that you need to reinstall IE.

There are certain steps to reinstalling depending on what your version of Windows is> and if you have XP with SP2 or not.

Let us know what happens.

Answer:vertical blue pane missing in win xp

I think the option that you are after is called "Common Tasks"

To enable this do the following

Open my computer and select TOOLS | FOLDER OPTIONS

From here look in GENERAL, under "Tasks" ensure that "Show common tasks in folders" is selected.

This should restore the functionality you are after

I don't need to access my Contacts list in Office 2010 very often. I just noticed today that the text entry for Contacts was missing from the Navigation pane. Instead, there was a small icon in the lower right corner of the pane for Contacts. On all my other machines the text entry is present. I've no idea when the text was replace by the icon or why -- it could have been weeks ago.

Will someone please tell me how to get the text entry back?

Thank you very much

Answer:Contacts Missing From Navigation Pane

Could you try clicking that small arrow which says Configure buttons and check if contacts is tick marked?

Attachment as reference.

Another thing could be the height was pushed downwards. Drag it up and see if the text comes back.

Has any of you ever come across this problem? My preview pane is not displaying anything... I just noticed that the preview pane is not working when a supported file is clicked. When a file is not selected it shows a "No preview available" line but when you select a file, it is blank as you can see from the screenshot.
(I apologize for this I didn't know how else to demonstrate the problem...)
The problem is not with certain file types, like in the screenshot it is MP3s but all the other media files, the preview pane is entirely missing. I think there is a problem with the media player rich preview handler. The image files, such as jpg png etc, are still displayed... For example, if the thumbnails are turned on, you can see the preview of the image in the pane, if the thumbnails are turned off, then you see the enlarged icon of the file type in the pane, which is normal behavior.
Anything else like txt, video, pdf, a file type that would show normally (with rich preview handler thing) shows a blank in the pane. I can double click the blank preview pane and fire up the program to view the media file... I messed with a little utility called Preview Handler Association Editor this weekend, but didn't change much around, first I thought, that messed it up. I had assigned picture file types to media player rich preview handler so I didn't have to turn on the thumbnails to see a preview of pics. I reverted back to normal but that didn't fix the prob... 2. Ensure Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > Views > Show Preview Handlers in Preview Pane is checked.

I have a terrific HP Laptop which I purchased back in 2007 or 2008 and I rarely use it until last month, probably only once or twice a week with only a few hours.

Recently, I started to use HP Laptop on daily basis and found 'Search' at the left side of the pane/screen is missing/lost when clicking on 'Search' at the top. 'Search' at the address bar is perfectly OK tho'.

Is this issue related to not use it for a while, .... or how did it disappear?

Only seen is 'Google' ad. popping up upon clicking at 'Search' on the tool-bar of the top.

How can I rescue 'Search' at the left pane of screen?

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

Answer:Missing Properties/Tags in Details Pane

Is this only for mp3 files?

You said "when everything was working fine" what happened? did you download a new program? (itunes, vlc)

Did you use a "registry cleaner" or an "optimizer"?

On the properties window, general tab, what is it set to "open with"?

Hello. I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro. 64-bit, and Firefox browser. When I want to save an image from the Internet, and right click on an image, it opens up what looks just like Windows Explorer. The problem is, the 'preview pane' button is missing, and I can therefore not get a large preview when using the details view, which I must use, because I have folders with many files to look through quickly. The images do show up properly in icons view. If I open up Windows Explorer by itself, it works properly, and I get the preview pane button.

I saw a similar thread, and it recommended making sure Windows Photo Viewer, is set as the default program. I set it to be the default, but it didn't help.

On my older Windows XP computer, I had xplorer2lite open up when right-clicking on an image. That was a more convenient program for me to use. Is it possible to do that in Windows 7?

Also, is to possible to get the panes in Windows Explorer to 'hold' their position.

Thank you.

I had to manually find all related files to OE6 to delete it so it would reinstall. Then the updates. Now nothing shows up on the preview pane or when I open the email. I can use Outlook instead but what is wrong? The only view of the message is in properties: details: message source.

1. With Outlook Express closed, go to Start>Run
2. Type in: regsvr32 inetcomm.dll (with the space after "regsvr32")
3. Click OK (or press the Enter key)

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Navigation Pane and Preview Pane Bug

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

It's portable and runs without installation.

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.

I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.

I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.

Question: Win 7 research

I apologize for going off topic. I am trying to learn win 7. I have aquired two Associates Degrees in networking. But, these degrees were aquired using and studying win xp. Are there any reliable resources that I can read or even study to get caught up on Win 7? I do not have any money to pay for any on line courses as my wife has stage 3 breast cancer and has to have Chemo for a year. I tried to get a computer/laptop with win 7 as a graduation present but to no avail. This was when my wife was diagnosed. Or, if anyone has a desktop/laptop they would like to give away, Lapotp preferred would be apprieciated. That can handle win 7 ultimate ( Ha, Ha) on the desktop/laptop.

Thank you in advance for any recomendation on resouces for win 7.

Still Learning, Learning Still

Answer:Win 7 research

You could check with the Win 7 upgrade advisor if your hardware is compatible with Windows 7, you then would just need to buy it (although I presume you are pretty much broke, from what I get from your post).

I don't think many people would be willing to give a computer for free, especially over the internet. You can find computers with Win 7 for very cheap nowadays though. I remember seeing one for $100 at a local pawn shop here, so you probably could have a similar deal on your end.

As for learning Win 7, there are plenty of tutorials on this forum, but you can't practice much if you don't have the OS installed.

I hope your wife gets better soon, cancer is no small thing.

So my laptop is slow. It takes about 20 seconds for Applications to start - and that's with nothing else running. I've been to BlackViper's site for Windows XP, and went through his 10 point checklist, but what confuses me the most is why I have 44 processes running and which ones I can stop running - permanantly. So I'm going to give you my specs to see if 20 seconds for opening a program is a long time for my system...also, everything is just slower than I remember when I first got it. I deleted a lot of programs to free up space, did all of the defrags and disc cleaning, spybotting, adwareing, registry cleaning, etc. that I can do and still no luck.

Question: Research help

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is exactly the right section to post this question. However, for a research assignment, I must research on 1 change in computer engineering technology that has had social and environmental impact.
There is so many changes that i can't really think of which is the best. Examples are they increasing size of data storage, microprocessors getting faster, faster microprocessors, etc. I must be able to answer how that change came to be (how it evolved according to needs/wants of people), who created the change, What were the past effects of the development on society and the enviroment and projected impact ( How was it before the change), and how can it evolve in the future.
If anybody is willing to give a hand , it would be great. What is the best change to research on and any guidance towards finding the answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

In the past few weeks I havestarted an IT support course. The course is in parts is very intense.
I have recently been given an assessment to contrast DOS and Windows XP under the following headings:

Operating System Functions
User interface
Portability across various hardware platforms
File system supported.

The purpose of the assessment is to display an ability to carry out research using the internet while at the same time getting a background in a subject which we will be covering shortly. I have got some material but am finding difficulty in finding sites that give a reasonably simple comparison/explanation of the two systems.

Anybody have any ideas as to suitable sites that I should go to?

I am doing a research project in sound technology on the following topic.

I am interested in building an algorithm that can take a large sound file as input, and segregate and parse various words (human spoken format) in that file. These words, along with their position in the sound file may then be indexed. A search engine crawler can then use these indexed bookmarks against a search performed for the corresponding text and produce the sound files having a match of those words as results.

Please suggest the feasibility of such an algorithm and suggest how to go about it. Give some pointers.

I recently had a very bad experience with trying to get my CPU to stay running. After taking it to Staples, I had more problems than ever. I ended up taking it to a local shop that only deals with computer repairs+custom jobs. The person who worked on my CPU had 28 years of experience with servicing computers.
This person ended up having to reinstall Windows as it had become so corrupted. I was told that all I needed for a firewall was Windows Defender. My ISP is Comcast+it is supposed to offer firewall protection also.
I read thru the tutorial here about Windows firewall, but still have some questions. I know how to get to my history log, but don't know how to set any parameters. I am noticing that there are potentially unwanted behavior warnings, but Defender has not notified me when I could be at risk. The tutorial also stated to research the port the traffic is coming in on, but in my history log, there aren't any references to ports.
Can someone here please help me sort this out?
I am also still not clear on a hardware firewall versus a personal one. I only have one computer+am not connected to any others in my home.
Is it better or necessary to purchase a firewall program?
The person who worked on my system stated all I needed was Windows Defender+removed my free version of Zone Alarm. I really didn't understand how to use Z.A. anyway, but I want to keep my system safe.

Thanks in advance for any+all feedback in this matter.

Answer:How Do I Research The History Log?

Windows Defender is not a firewall. It's a spyware checker. There is a Windows Firewall in XP but most experts believe it's ineffective because it only monitors incoming packets. So you should probably install a softwall firewall like Zone Alarm if you like it or Comodo. Be sure to uninstall the Windows Firewall when you install another firewall. Windows Defender runs in real time but isn't considered to be very effective. Add some additional spyware protection like Spyware Blaster, AVG Anti Spyware & Super Anti Spyware. You didn't say anything about anti virus but the guy who told you that Defender is adequate protection is telling you the wrong thing. As for what your ISP is offering, that's pretty much what I have from Rogers. It's a Norton product with firewall, anti virus & anti spyware at no extra cost. I downloaded it from the Rogers website. Maybe Comcast is offering something similar but I also have additional spyware protection and I run AVG Anti Spyware & Super Anti Spyware as on demand scanners weekly. You should only have one anti virus & firewall or there will be conflicts.

Question: Malware research

Is there a place, forum or website, where you can research malware to see if it is a legitimate problem? I understand no single company or product can detect every malware out there, but when I detect a suspicious file, where can I go to see if it is really a problem before I remove it?

Answer:Malware research

You'd just have to use google, and learn to avoid certain sites which have reputations for giving out misleading/false information. You will get to recognize the "safe sites" which report correctly on what a file is/what it releates to etc.

Don't forget you can always check the file properties in many ways.

Hello Fellow Geeks...
In my Principles of Information Security class, we are beginning our semester projects. I am looking for suggestions for research resources. The following was provided by our instructor:

Define and explain security malware problems that users may face with the use of desktop or laptop computers
How to know if malware exists, how to protect computing devices from malware and what to do if your computer has malware
Discuss features of particular virus and malware software that is free or can be purchased.
Prepare a table of at least 5 products indicating price, functionality, ease of use, rated protection

While there is certainly a wealth of information available on the web, I need a bit of help separating the factual & thorough from the opinion & fragmented information. I know that many of you are experts on such a topic. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:Need research ideas

I'm sorry but we are really way to busy removing malware and fixing the damaged cause by malware to spend time on this. You can research in threads here in the forum and read the sticky/pinned threads to come up with some ideas.

And the last bullet you can easily get review and price information on from the internet.

I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas for research topics. Programming is another area I like although I don't think that there is much you can research about it other then its history.

Question: GameBoy Research

First off, I'm sure everyone here (who knows about Pokemon or CreepyPasta) has heard of Lavender Town Syndrome. I'm not out to prove it as much as disprove it from a technical standpoint. Everyone has made videos about their own theories about the game. However, no one has looked at it from a technical standpoint. I've found bits and pieces all over the internet about certain important aspects of this myth and I'd like some input from a hardware standpoint.

According to the myth, the song plays with binaural beats. Also, only children can hear it because of their young ears.

GameBoy Sound Capabilities:
2 pulse wave generators, 1 PCM 4-bit wave sample (64 4-bit samples played in 1×64 bank or 2×32 bank) channel, 1 noise generator, and one audio input from the cartridge. The unit only has one speaker, but headphones provide stereo sound. Can this system reproduce Binaural sounds?

A GameBoy sound file, when ripped from a cartridge, is 50KB. (I am not encouraging ripping as much as stating a fact based on an observation.) As such, what all is it capable of? Binaural sounds?

One aspect I do believe is that, because the music was an octave too high, wearing headphones capable of such a high octave could make someone feel ill after playing for a while. (This was remedied in later releases.) Also, I listened to the music and I noticed a few things:

A constant base beat playing at a certain frequency (or one of the other tones had that much of a thump to it).... Read more

I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. My ISP recently lifted all traffic shaping/QoS on their WiFi network, and as you can guess... it doesnt take long before 20 users choke down 3Mbs of half-duplex bandwidth. Typical things I see, are pings in games going absolutley nuts, sometimes into 3-5 second ping range. Pings from my pc to my router are less than 1ms. Pings from my pc, through the router, to the WiFi bridge are 1-3ms, so Im sure its not the linksys or the belkin router. Pings from my pc to the ISPs router are sometimes 5-7ms, sometimes 3,000ms.

DNS server is choked down all the time, pings usually are never below 300ms. Pings to google can get as low as 70ms at night, and sometimes get so high during the day that the pings time out.

Im going to call my ISP eventually and complain for about an hour, but before I do so, im going to gather up as much information as possible about what is going on. Ive let ping run for an hour or two (pinging the gateway, and pinging my router). But Im looking more for something that can ping 3 or 4 things at once, and plot them out on a graph, or possibly even plot out traceroutes over a long period of time.

Does anyone know of any freeware/shareware software that should work? And any other methods I should try to present my 'case' ? Ive googled a few programs, I think one was Megaping... though none of them had a plot/graph that would run on for hours. Im mainly trying to show "ok at this time, pings from the router to your router were X, and at thi... Read more

According to AVG 7 I have 4 viruses on my system. Here are my details.

Downloader.Dyfica.H (I think it is deleted now)
Dropper.Netbuser.A (embedded Object)
IRC/Backdoor.SdBot (embedded Object)
Dropper.ExeBundle.AA (embedded Object)

I am running Win2k and just reformatted my C drive in the last few days. But I have never had these many viruses before.

I have tried to find information on all of these on the net. No one seems to have any information with the exception of F-Secure. It was able to tell me about 1 of them.

I went to Trend and did a scan...nothing was found. I scanned with Panda..nothing found. I scanned with the Cleaner..nothing was found. AVG seems to find these but they have no information on any of them which is very frustrating. Why is AVG finding them and none of the others?

Could these be false positives? If someone could help me try to understand why I would greatly appreciate it.

I see that you use Hijack this quite a bit and maybe that is what I will need to do. But I would like to understand why AVG finds so much and none of the others do..especially The Cleaner which is geared to trojans. And they were all updated as of the time I used them to scan to make sure I was current.

Thanks for any help.

Question: Browser Research

So I did some research of my own and so far I've come up with this..

Firefox: Fast, and better known so more prone to having specials and compatibility with more sites and programs.
Opera: Faster by only a bit, overloaded with alot of nice but bulky and sometimes un-needed applications and add-ons.
Safari: Fastest I've used to date. But less compatible with sites and unattractive. (I don't like the Mac like look)
Avant: Medium/Fast, not as bulky, compatible with sites I've used.
IE 7: Uhm.. I really can't say anything nice about this one except it has been around for awhile. Horrible pop-up blocker.

So I'm curious, keeping in mind these are my opinion's and not neccesarly the facts/truth, what would you say was the best browser in terms of being fast, productive and not bulky or ugly? I've got all these browsers now and I'm trying to decide which one to keep, or if they are others I should check out.

And I like Safari the most so far.

Hello. I am trying to find the right combinations of ram and hard drive size to buy for my business. The computer will be for business with pos software plus software for photo editing. I do one hour film now and will need a new computer that has media slots also.

1. Should I buy lower ram and then upgrade it myself?

2. How good is the HP lightscribe technology....worth the price?

I am considering the Athlon 64 chip and 160 harddrive with 512 expandable ram, any suggestion?
Thank you.

Answer:New Computer Research Questions

It all depends on the prices and performance you want.
a Athlon64 chip and 160 gb HDD w/ 512 is a good starting point. If you play any games at all I would suggest to go with 1 GB of RAM though. I wouldn't even consider buying a computer w/o 512mb anymore. Always make sue you can upgrade the system to do some looking around and find a computer you like then check the parts. With and Athlon64 chip you want to ensure you get a 939 chipset (as some shady people are selling 754 chipsets that are now outdated and will soon be unable to upgrade w/o telling you). while also looking at the motherboard you want ot ensure that you can fit at least 2 GB RAM (I perfer 4 GB) and that it uses DDR.
As for HP lightscribe technology I've never delt with it so I dont know there.

I bought my new comp 6 months ago w/ an Athlon64(939), 512mb RAM( max is 4GB) and a 200 GB HDD and I love it. the Processor speed may seem slow (compared to the 3GHz speeds we were seeing) but with this 64 bit technology the true speed would actually be double the rated speed when comparing it to a 32 bit processor. (ie: a 1.8 GHz 64 bit performs like a 3.6 GHz 32 bit processor)

There was one thing left out of Microsoft’s CES 2009 keynote today and that was the announcement of Songsmith, by Microsoft Research.
Religious followers of this blog would know that Songsmith is the product of a Microsoft Research project with a student from the University of Washington called MySong which was showed off in early 2008. The software can automatically provide musical melodies to accompany any vocal singing you provide, making anyone audible a potential songwriter. Not that every teenager should be one.
Songsmith seems to have matured quite a bit from its early prototype days with new features such as “(allowing) you to expand your collection of musical styles and instruments through our partners, PG Music and Garritan” and “enables you to edit chords to create the perfect music accompaniment, even if you’ve never worked with chords before.”
As the second product to ship (first being AutoCollage) by the previously research-only-but-increasingly-commercial Microsoft Research (as the name suggests), Songsmith will only be available (soon) via the Microsoft Store as a digital download. A trial will also be available. Prices are not yet announced.
Update: The official Songsmith website is now up. So is the trial download link. The price for the full version if US$29.95."

So two days ago, i clicked on the Permission Research website because it was for an offer. When i signed up, it made me install the Permission Research program or process. However, today when i was on the internet, my internet wouldn't let me access hotmail and only showed a blank space. Thinking that something might have affected this, i decided to go uninstall the Permission Research toolbar or program ( i forgot ). When i clicked uninstall though, nothing popped up, but the program disappeared from the list. Later i went to my program files (x86) folder and found it there. I deleted everything EXCEPT for the prls.dll and the prls64.dll. So i did some research on google and found out it was a virus T.T... i read some threads, but couldn't really find the answer to delete those files. Later i read a thread where a guy renamed those .dll files to .txt. However, i had to play around with the properties settings and ownerships settings of those files for a while. In the end, i went on my administrator account and was able to rename only the prls.dll file to prls.txt file and miraculously managed to delete that. However, i was still unable to rename the prls64.dll file. It kept on saying i needed the administrator's permission to do so, even when i was on my administrator user and changed the ownership setting. Earlier, when i first tried to delete it, it kept saying that those files were running in process, preventing me from being able to delete it. Now i really don't know wha... Read more

Research Associate

Position Description. The Research Associate will work within the Core Technologies Group within the research branch of the company. This group is responsible for:

? Reverse-engineering spyware applications to understand how they work, what information they transmit outside the computer, and how to address anti-removal technologies.
? Building automated research infrastructure. We are building towards a totally virtualized (VMs holding infected machine states), automated testing environment where experiments can be defined in a scripting language and carried out without human guidance. Picking up this effort will be an important early goal.
? Building data acquisition tools and backend data analysis systems. Our product sends data from infected machines to a central database. It is important to refine the collection process to catch everything of interest, and to enhance data analysis on the server side to extract maximal value from the huge amount of data contained therein.
? Extending the engine core. The engine needs to respond to new spyware technologies as they occur.
? Research writing. We are building a library of white papers which describe sophisticated spyware techniques, our responses to them, and our broader technology initiatives. There is also significant opportunity for patent work in this area.

I am merely curious of the following companies which would surmount the others: Asus, Lenovo, MSI, or Toshiba? My criterion is currently lenient; its cost can be roughly $1.2k, 500+gb HDD, 5000-7200rpm read/write speed HDD, 200 or 300 nVidia series (or Radeon equivalent; I neglect to stay updated w/ ATI), HDMI compatible, 15-17" screen w/ 16:9/16:10/15:9 aspect ratio, and several hour battery life. The companies mentioned are of my prior knowledge and recommendation. If there are any comparable companies not aforementioned, I'm welcome to research them as well. Appreciate your time.

Answer:Ambivalent on laptop research....

Here is my elucidated criterion:

budget: ~$1-1.5k

size: 15-17"

resolution: 16:9/16:10/15:9 aspect ratios

battery life: 4-7hrs

graphic performance: Op Flashpoint: Dragon Rising... I think that is taxing enough for a benchmark

other features/ tasks: sound hardware near FLAC standards, HDMI compatibility, and ability to run Rhino & Solidworks

HDD capacity: 500+gb

sites:,,,,,,,,,, et cetera

longevity: I would prefer that it remain adequate for my entire 4-5year undergrad endeavor; however, I do prospect that I shall built a high performance desktop in a few years. My emphasis on this laptop's abilities is underscored by versatility and practicality.

brands: preferred = Asus, Dell, Lenovo, MSI, and Toshiba; chosen from personal experience and others' recommendation. disliked = Acer & HP; chosen from reviews holding them lowest in reliability or customer service

Can anyone suggest a good topic to research on Cryptography? In my Information Security course, we have to get a paper published by a popular website or journal such as .

I'm actually a programmer, which is why I want to research Cryptography because it is extremly interesting to me, and is sort of a tie between IT and Computer Science.

My knowledge of Cryptography is limited. About the best I've done is written an RSA encryption/decryption program, and then tried to research some basic algorithms for deciphering encrypted text. Nothing too advanced, just Caeserian ciphers, basic subsitution and shift ciphers.

I sent my professor my topic idea of researching the benefits of different encryption algorithms, but apparently it's too broad of a topic. He did offer the suggestions of "Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) applications for secure email.", "A History of Block Cipher Algorithms and Thier Applications in Communication Security", or
"Encryption Technologies for VoIP".

The only one that kinda stands out as something I'm interested in is "A History of Block Cipher Algorithms and Their Applications in Communication Security", but I was kind of hoping to get your opinions on some other interesting topics I could research before I start doing some preliminary research to figure out which topic I want to pursue.

Answer:Cryptography Research Ideas

I personally think that PKI is fascinating -- the notion that you can safely distribute an encryption key that can't decrypt its own message is pretty cool.

I have a Dell 5200 Inspirion - bought it July 2015 (my third Dell laptop). About four months ago, the plastic mounts in the base (not the display lid) snapped due to pressure from the hinge. Never dropped. Never bumped. A familiar story, it seems.
I really don't have time to mess around and fix this kind of thing - saw various YouTube vids that explain how to do the job - and threw up my hands.
I looked around at other laptops - Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Acer - they ALL have hinge problems. Apparently, in the rush to make laptops as thin and light as possible, they skimped on the engineering. Looking at the inside of the case, I'm surprised that these machines don't have more problems.
Want a laptop without a hinge problem? Buy a Mac.
Looks like I'm going to have to buckle down and take this box apart. I'm using gorilla glue.

well it's been a while since i've built a gaming PC... a few months ago i decided i'd be going with ATi for certain... so i bought an m2r32mvp, 1kw psu, 2x1Gb ocz RAM... and i was slowly piecing it together until i found out Intel and AMD have quad core GPU's out now, which would be ideal for gaming processing. money is an issue... but it's not... basically I'm looking for a full speed dual ePCI Crossfire board that supports quad core processing and DDR3 RAM... does this exist yet?
I know AMD quad core processors for the AM2+ are buggy and you have to disable the L3 cache for stable performance and new CPUs will be out in March, but will they be AM2+ or a new socket altogether?

What should I buy?

not interested in nVidia, although i am curious as to what's the hype of this SLI technology that they probably got when 3dfx was acquired so long ago

build your dream machine and post it here as a suggestion

Does anyone know what new motherboards are going to be released soon?
I'm mainly interested in ASUS and Abit as far as motherboards go because they've been solid in the past, but whatever...

thanks for the support

(and does anyone have an answer as to why a 2Gb stick of DDR3 is slower in mhz than the lower ones?)

Answer:Ambivalent on laptop research

Here is my elucidated criterion:

budget: ~$1-1.5k

size: 15-17"

resolution: 16:9/16:10/15:9 aspect ratios

battery life: 3-5hrs

graphic performance: Op Flashpoint: Dragon Rising...

My emphasis on this laptop's abilities is underscored by versatility and practicality.

brands: preferred = Asus, Dell, Lenovo, MSI, and Toshiba; chosen from personal experience and others' recommendation. disliked = Acer, Gateway, & HP; chosen from reviews holding them lowest in reliability or customer service

I was an ENORMOUS idiot and rashly decided to download and run Combofix before knowing what I was getting myself into. I read a random post on Reddit about how great the program was for removing malware, and without much thought I ran the program. While it was working, I decided to do some research using my phone (since it temporarily disables internet), and soon realized I made a terrible mistake. But, my instincts told me it would be a horrible idea to close the program while it was already mid-operation, so I sat there in suspense, hoping my computer wouldn't explode and eradicate the entire human race. Anyway, I haven't noticed any immediate problems with my computer since running the program, although I have noticed a slight increase in speed.
Here are the logs. I have no idea how to interpret them, so if it deleted something that may cause problems, please let me know how I can fix it:

I just bought a Digital Research brand 24x10x40 CDRW drive. It was $80 american at Best Buy with a ten dollar rebate. I had also received a $50 gift certificate so it was actually $30! This has got to be one of my best investments. I have burned 8 cds already without a single problem. I have burned all kinds too, copying of cd-to-cd, mp3 cds, cd audio cds, data cds, iso cds, and without a problem. I was hesitant to buy this brand over Plextor but i figured if the drive didnt' work up to my expectations i'd just return it. I'm sure glad i saved the $80 buying this one over the plextor. :grinthumb Digital research :grinthumb

Answer:Digital Research 24x10x40

Cool, glad you like it. I bought my dad a Lite-On 24x10x40 and he loves it. Burns real fast and hasn't messed up a cd once.

Funny story: My sister has my old 2x2x6 and burned 3 identical cds on my dads burner because she though they were finishing too quick and something had to be wrong

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode
If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

As far as i know OSPF uses Dijkstra Algorithm. Am I right on this one? And is it possible to use A* Algorithm on IP Routing or replace the Dijkstra?

Please help me on this one. Thanks.

Answer:OSPF (Needed for research)

Yes it uses Dijkstras. No as far as i know you cannot replace it. You can adjust the parameters and knobs in ospf to get what you want but the underlying algorithm will always be dijkstras.

For starters, I'm new to this forum. I'm a senior in high school, and I'm applying to a Siemen's / Westinghouse Competition, a research project type of thing (link is here .) My team is planning on doing a research project based on Windows.

We are basing our research project on the fact that on systems with Windows installed, whenever less than half the space on the system is remaining, the computer has a sudden decrease in performance. We've noticed that this happens only on Windows system, and have tried on Linux and Mac systems as well. I'm hoping that someone much more knowledgeable in file systems and windows can be of some help in giving a personal "testimony" or anything at all. All we need is a quick proverbial point in the right direction.

Also, is there a contact email in microsoft i should be asking?

Thanks very much in advance!

Answer:Research Project, need advice

The system performance is going to decrease when you hook the computer up to the Internet, since you need to install the basics: anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall. And having those running will make any system sluggish.

I'm currently working on a project in which im exploring the way people use computers and the internet.

Most important to my project right now is :

how people learnt to use computers and the internet?.. did you learn them both at once?.. had you had a computer for years before you even thought about the net?... did anyone help you discover computers or the net?..did you need to learn these skills for a reason?...

Me myself>> I learnt as a nipper, sat in front of my dads work computer drawing silly pictures. Then i moved onto playing games, general office applications followed, and by the time i was 11 i was hooked on the net. Now i design and maintain websites, and manages a few peoples business accounts. I guess i was shown the way by my dad, but i also had a fair few good tutors through school and college.

Any repsonses would be great.

I have seen a couple of posts now on this website about drivers not working after a Vista install and software not working etc.

I would like to remind everyone that there is a Vista upgrade advisor avilable at

As with my previous "flaming" topic, I don't want this to turn into a slugfest against Vista. Any unfounded accusations against Vista on this topic will be reported.

But remember that Vista is a BIG upgrade and does have some issues, which can be expected, like any other upgrade. So, to all you flamers, at least Microsoft have been good enough to provide this free utility.

P.S. this doesn't pick up everything so search for "[your PC model name] and Vista" on Google before upgrading, too, especially if you have a laptop, because these can be tricky (like my laptop).

Answer:Do your research BEFORE installing Vista

Hi all. I am writing an academic paper on IT architecture and processes from an 'outsider’s perspective' (centred on the idea of innovation - "can’t see the wood for the trees"). Can I ask for some help on the process of defragmentation. With the varying file systems (NTFS, Fat, FAT32) it is difficult to understand how a Defrag program can successfully negotiate disks. I understand the concept of fragmented data, how it becomes fragmented, and know how, in general, a defrag is supposed to help. However, can someone explain to me in detail, or give me any advise/help/URL's as to how a defrag program really works:: from the pushing of the defrag button (so to speak)
How does it identify fragmented files?
How does it locate fragmented files?
How does it store this information?
What is the defragmentation process? eg. Scan, document, relocate?
Is there any information already stored about fragmented files on a day to day basis, or is it one clean scan when defrag is run?
Are there separate processes depending on the Filing system/OS system?
Where are indexes and lookup tables located, and how are these referenced?

This paper is referenced on the basis of helpfulness of response and this site/people will be properly referenced. - [email protected] for E-mails to be included in its general release.

I feel like I am regressing back into the stone age these past few weeks concerning google searches. I'm trying to do some research and I get products or local businesses. I use to click discussions to filter this out but I run into the almighty useless google groups discussions instead of finding new interesting forums that may be out there. Even adding when searching discussions doesn't remove those results.

Anyone know of a search engine that is for research? I dont want a closed network that doesnt include everyday peoples input or undocumented/verified info which is why I think forums are great. Sites like wikipedia is great for factual information or summeries but not sharing experiences and learning from each other. So I'm looking for a search engine that excludes results of people trying to make a living. Just research. Does one exist?

Edit: Alright getting better but open to suggestions. In case anyone want to know this seems to have removed google discussion results and can remove specific websites. Maybe a firefox addon can automatically filter out websites like facebook forums and google groups. I'd be set.
