Custom File Properties on Custom files

Question: Custom File Properties on Custom files

Hello!

I want to add tags or properties to Custom Extension Files. Like ".txt", ".Cmp" etc...

Windows Help says :

Note : You cannot add or modify the file properties of some types of files. For example, you can add or modify the properties of Microsoft Office documents and Searches, but you can't add or modify the properties of TXT or RTF files.Click to expand...

Is there some trick to do it anyway ? Its crap that these functionality is only limited to Microsoft Office Files, Images etc...

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Custom File Properties on Custom files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello there, board! Any chance there's a VBA wizard that can help me out?

I'm looking for a bit of VBA that will help me update custom document properties in 50 + documents all at once. The files vary in number and in name, but there are times when I have to update the custom document properties in a number of them (always kept in the same folder, if that helps any). It takes a lot of time, think this can be automated?

One thing that would be handy is if it could start in Excel, where I could fill in the new values for the fields and then hit a button, choose which files (or folders containing files) need to be updated, and have it magically do it for me.

Is this possible? Or too ambitious?

Many thanks!

Yes VBA can be used to do this. Can you post some sample documents ?

I just downloaded all of the Google Web Fonts and they were each downloaded into their respected folders, so instead of clicking on folder after folder and right clicking after right clicking and finally installing each and every font;

How can I create a command prompt (batch) file so the prompt can search the main folder where all the font folders are, grab any and all TrueType Font files and move or copy them into another single folder?

Answer:Custom batch file that copies font files to another folder?

It seems like it would be easier to search by the TTF file extension.

Copy the results where you want them.

Ok.. I'm just throwing this out here...it's darn late hihi

I have written a 'program' (script), which will automate a recovery system for windows 7, full with a working bootmanager, (custom) partitioning, ramdisks, custom environment (winre/pe), and backup imaging , all legal and licensed according to microsoft as long as its not distributed (aka single computer [home] end user).

I decided after hourrrrssss and weeeks of reading, researching, testing, failing, testing again, reading again, installing F amounts of programs, running sysprep, MDT2010, WAIK, dism, imagex, winpe, winre, bootsect, bcdedit, you name it, I came to the conclusion.. I gotta write something up for the other poor souls around out there.

I'm not going into more details now, but I was thinking of writing this up in c++ or so and asking for donations, which will entitle support in the odd event it would not* work in your case.

However, to just test it all that it works, I wrote it in scripts (batch and vbs) which I realize now I never shall do again :P (more an OOP man myself)

I write programs normally so dealing with exceptions extensively in batch is just .... well about as time consuming as 20 % of the time I spent on R&D on all this.

Anyway, I am wondering, given I always been used to the share way, if there are people who actually are willing to donate 5 bucks or so, on a script which would take about 2 hours max to execute to set up a total personal home recovery partition system. This me... Read more

Answer:Easy Custom image + custom recovery OEM like system?

OKi.. update. I see now more how this program will work. shame its all working fine with .hta, .vbs and .bat.
ANyway, a full gui app will be present in windows 7 and lets a person set up all his wishes and desires for how he wishes ot have his recovery partitions system set up, incl. the option of other partitions to include in this.

When everything is done, a mikepe disk is created (a custom recovery disk which inclues a wimpe native application of this program ) which will run the precompiled settings from win 7 and will rebuild the partitions, all ready to go. It will also link this system to one single computer only (due to licensing issues and piracy protection.. I'm guessing the latter is easily hacked lol). Anyway, after that, it's all just some hours of installoing, setting up, and voila off to go.

A base windows 7 installation (no extra programs), will create a recovery partition of ~ 3 GB and will be redeploiyed all set to go with your own old account and password in less than 5 minutes.

If you add all your own programs etc, the rebuild can take up to 1 hour.

Still much faster than installing windows, changing all your settings, creating yoru account, installing all those programs... etc.

Will also I think add several boot options, as to recover damaged boot loaders, including support for adding boot entries and back up of linux, vista, xp any OS partitions. You will also be able to give the boot entries any name u fancy like:

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to add my own icons to libraries that I make. I have tried navigating to:

Code:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
And after right clicking the Library I made, I don't get an option to change the icon. Is there any way to do this? It would just be easier to tell the difference between user-created libraries if the icons could be changed, instead of only using the one default icon provided.

I've tried searching through the tutorials section, and looked through the first five pages or so of results that came up from a search here on the forums, and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:How to add a custom icon to a custom library?

Wasn't able to find the answer on here, but did find it here:

I am having issues getting my custom MigUser.xml file to work using MDT.
"What do I need to specify in MDT to have a custom .xml file run for USMT?"

Instead of creating a custom.xml file, I decided to just add a few components to the existing "MigUser.xml" thinking that I wouldnt have to do anything major to the existing MDT Windows 7 depoloyment that is already in place at my company. I thought that
the installation would have already been calling the "MigUser.xml" file and if I just add a few components to that then BAM the problem is solved..... Not that easy I guess.

When I tested my "MigUser.xml" file in a basic Windows 7 virtual machine, I manually executed the ScanState command and specified to use "MigUser.xml" and that worked perfect in performing exactly what I needed to do, so the issue is NOT with the XML file
itself, it is just not getting called with the MDT Installation that my company has in place.

Doing research I found that I have to edit the "CustomSettings.ini" file with something like this:
USMTMigFiles1=MigApp.xml
USMTMigFiles2=MigDocs.xml
USMTMigFiles3=MigUser.xml
So even after I added those 3 lines to my "CustomSettings.ini" It still didnt work...

Here is what my CustomSettings.ini file looks like:

Answer:Using Custom XML files for MDT Installation

Yup, you cannot use Miguser and MigDoc.
I always use clean and new custom xml files which makes it easy to call from CS.ini and avoid the confusion of the default one being altered or not.
Having multiple Custom XML files for each setting are good in some ways - because if you need to remove a migration method or test something, you can just comment it out in CS.ini using '
This is a better approach rather then opening the XML file and making a change.
1) Copy "Favorites" to Desktop :
[Vik] - Check the USMTCapture and USMTRestore logs to see if the Favorites were processed. This is not a normal behavior.
2) Copy Mozilla Firefox profiles/bookmarks
[Vik] - USMT is does not natively copy Mozilla bookmarks even though I think it mentions in Technet. I just copy over the bookmarks.html file (favorites file)
3) A specific ".ini" file stored in the XP "application data" folder has to be copied to "C:\Windows" on the Windows 7 OS
[Vik] No Comments
4) All desktop shortcuts will be put into a folder on the Windows 7 desktop labeled "Old Desktop Shortcuts"
[Vik] - By default desktop shortcuts are migrated and this is more of a duplication. The only problem with migrating shortcuts is that if the source of the actual program of the shortcut is missing or not accessible, during the restore process the shortcut
will not be restored. USMT uses a function called IrrelavantLinks or something similar to get that.

Hi,
I want to create a .bat or some self executable file that will clear my files on each shutdown or startup. Like all temp folders, some files like desktop.ini, temporary files created by programs, ect.
Is this possible? If it is, how should I go about it?

Answer:Custom .bat .cmd files creation help.

You can set ccleaner to do all of that.
CCleaner - Command-line parameters
Then just create a task that will run it at shutdown.
This will be much easier and more reliable than trying to name all the temp folders and logs in a batch file.

Question: Custom File Icons?

I've got a program that creates various file types; some of these are associated with the program and display its icon. Is it possible to keep the file association, but change the icons for some of the associated types so they stand out in a listing?

If so, then ideally I'd like to extract the icon from the exe, make three slightly different versions, and make these display (at all scales) for the three main file types. Any suggestions for tools to do this? I have Photoshop CS5.

Photoshop does not work with .ICO file.

Question: Custom file types.

Hello everyone. I'm my department's desktop admin. and have spent about a week on this problem, we just switched to W7. This question has been asked many times in this forum but no solution seems to fit my issue.

I need to associate the ".pl" extension to a Perl compiler on the network. Presently, I have to install Perl (perl.org) to associate .pl to Perl but then not able to map to the location on the network.

This is what I used to be able to do in Windows XP:Start Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types
Click New
enter pl
Click Advanced
Click New
Action: Open
Application: "G:\Epic\Epic53\Editor\Perl\bin\perl.exe" "%1" %*
Any ideas as to how I can do this in Windows 7? I've seen some possible solutions by editing the registry but prefer to use an easier/elegant solution that I may have missed.

Thanks.

-ac

Answer:Custom file types.

Hi Semperlux and welcome to Seven Forums. You will find what you need in Control Panel->Programs.
Or alternatively if .pl has not been set up before you can right click on the file and select Open With->Chose default Program

How can I create/modifiy the custom fields in Outlook 2k3?
I have a csv file and it has some un-used fields that outlook doesn't have.
I tried modifing the form and got it to look the way I want it with my
custom fields but durning the import it has just the standard map fields.
Maybe I am desining my form wrong?

Answer:Outlook 2k3 & custom csv file

Hi mmbc_voltron

Does the .csv file contain address information?

Not sure exactly what you are trying to accomplish so if you could clarify a bit more, may be able to provide more help.

On the other hand, if you have already created the form, fill in the first record and try an Export as a .csv file.
You should then be able to open that .csv file and copy paste the information from your original .csv and then try Importing that to see if the fields populate as you want.

Let us know.

I am part way through the custom installation process with win10 iso from media create tool. I want to keep the files, the total/free space for disk 0, volume 3 seems to indicate they are still there.

Disk 0 Partition 1 - System
Disk 0 Partition 2 - MSR (reserved)
Disk 0 Partition 3: Windows - Primary (my files seem to be still located here judging on sizes)
Disk 0 Partition 4: Windows RE Tools - Recovery
Disk 0 Partition 5: RECOVERY - OEM (reserved)

It says the files will be moved to a Windows.old folder, when I try to do a custom install onto my Primary Partition, disk 0, partition 3.

This seems to be what I want, as I want to keep the files. However when I try to progress again I have received the following message and need to know from if it is safe to continue:

"the partitions on the disk selected for installation are not in the recommend order."

I have just upgraded my HP Pavilion to a 64 bit system. when I open 'Program Files', together with 'Old Files' there is also '86 Program Files'. when I download a new application the default location choice is the 86 Program File. I know that this is causing conflicts as I have 2 Explores running and my wireless card keeps hiccuping. I have tried to delete the 86 program but without success. Anyone got any ideas?
Regards Bryan

Answer:86 program files in new 64 bit custom install.

64 bit windows 7 can run both 32 bit and 64 programs. 64 bit programs install into the Program Files folder and 32 bit programs install into the Program Files (x86) folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "Old files", did you mean the Windows.old folder? Also when you say delete did you mean un-install.

If you're running Windows XP, you can create a shortcut to a file, right-click on it, and change the "Comment" textfield. Now, when you hover the mouse over the shortcut, your comment will appear.

Is there a way to have a comment without making a shortcut? I'd like to keep things very simple; I have found some programs that have such a feature, but they clutter up my interface and do more than I want.

Any simple solutions? Preferably ones built into XP.

Hey sevenforums, first time poster

Just wondering if you are able to make a custom registry file (or something of the like) in order to apply certain settings to a new windows 7 x64 installation?
i wipe my drive often, and i use Ninite for a few applications, but theres also some settings i would like instead. here's what id hope to accomplish with said file:

-keep my custom libraries (movies, tv shows, pictures, music, Downloads on C:, downloads on D: )
-Add Take Ownership option
-share folders i had shared before (the folders will be intact on D:, my 7 installation is on C: )
-Disable UAC
- Automatically use hidden Administrator account (if this were in a custom install disk, maybe skip username info so it never makes another account in the first place.)

this would probably need to be in a custom install disk i'd think, but auto uxtheme patched windows?

thanks for any help you can give on any of these. whether its a registry file or how to add these settings to a custom install disk or another method, im happy to hear any answers you can give me

Answer:custom .reg files, or windows install

hi john and welcome to SF
Looks to me as if you would do that quite frequently, right?
In that case just go into regedit and export the branches that hold the information in question.
Put those reg files on say a usb stick and you can re import them later in the new installation.

I am in the process of revamping my music files into a better database. For right now, I'm just doing it through the windows folders. Since the files are MP3, the folders know they are music and it gives the options of Song Title, Artist, Genre, etc. When entering a genre, there are some standard ones that pop-up, like Rock, Christmas, etc. If I wanted to add something to those standard options, how would I do this? For instance, I want a personal genre called 80s for all my 80s music, is there a way to have that be a pop up I can just click rather than having to type in 80s for every song? thanks in advance for your help!!

Answer:Custom Genres for Music Files

Welcome to Seven Forums NofJandN. I don't think so. What you could try is

Right click an (80's) mp3> Properties> Details> Genre> Change genre to 80's

See if that doesn't add 80's to the pop up. I would try it, but quite honestly, I am not sure where exactly you are seeing the genre pop up with the standard choices. A Guy

Does anyone have a good resource for custom xml files to migrate user application data that's not included in the migapp.xml? For example, I have a custom.xml I wrote that migrates Firefox, Thunderbird, and Chrome, but I'd like to expand that to include
more complex applications like the Adobe Creative Suite. Since all that requires is a customized XML, and would be relatively standard for that version of the application (meaning anyone migrating Adobe Reader XI could use the same XML config) it seems likely
that someone has a blog or repository of some kind with samples for this.
I'm not using SCCM, and I'm not interested in any other tools that might do something similar. I already use the USMT so I don't need a lesson in how to integrate a custom.xml into my process. I'm only interested in resources for custom xml snippets for a variety
of applications.
Thanks!

Hi there!

I'm going to be a university student at Indiana University in the fall, so during orientation I picked up a student version of Windows 7 Ultimate for my HP Compaq laptop, which I bought back when Vista was brand new --I cant afford a new laptop right now, and the hardware is still good anyway. I will be upgrading from Windows Vista Basic.

My school's IT department recommends doing a "clean" install to avoid any software problems after the installation. I dont really know what the difference between a clean install versus a regular one would be, but I have the IT department's instructions on how to do a clean, custom install, instead of the standard upgrade. I want my computer to work well with the school's network, so I am fine with that.

The only thing that makes me uncomfortable is that they say custom upgrades delete all of my computer's files.

I HAVE AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, AND DID A COMPLETE BACK UP THIS AFTERNOON. All of my information is safely stored on my external terabyte.

My only question is, how do I sync all of my files from the external hard drive back onto my computer after this is done? I want to make sure it's possible to put everything back on my compuer before I go doing this custom installation and erasing everything.

Thanks!

Answer:If I do a custom upgrade, how do I get my files back?

If it runs Vista, it will run 7 better than Vista ran on it.

The difference between a clean install and an upgrade is this: A clean install is when you wipe the hard drive, including all of your files (which you hopefully backed up beforehand) and then install Windows. And upgrade is when you go from Vista to 7 without losing any files or programs.

You really should not do an upgrade because things get buggy as you start to use the computer. Things won't work correctly and you'll run into a bunch of problems. Copy all of your important files onto your external drive, boot into your Windows 7 disc, wipe the hard drive using "Quick Format", and then install Windows normally.

Here's a tutorial: Clean Install Windows 7

If you have an upgrade disc, you can still do a clean installation: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

At my new job I am finding out that we are always sifting through our server to find a previous job similar to a new one we need to do (drafter in a manufacturing industry). There are hundreds of jobs that have to be searched through using only our memory of which job number had which kinds of attributes. Instead I want to start putting keywords in the file properties and use those (and importantly, ONLY those keywords) to locate jobs with similar attributes. Ive tried researching online to find something, but I cant find anything. Just to be clear, the key words are what would show up in the properties menu if you right click on a file and select properties -> summary tab. Anybody have a clue how to search exclusively for keywords? Thanks

I've opened the Custom.dic file a few times with Notepad & looked at what was in there, but've never tried editing anything in it.
Can I edit the file with Notepad to correct misspellings, or delete words, then resave it & will Word2000 still be able to use it--or, is there another way it has to be done?

Answer:Word2000 Custom.dic file editing?

Everything you've asked should be possible, yes.

Just make sure when you close it that it is, in fact, saving it as a text file, and that it's name is still custom.dic, and not custom.dic.txt or something like that....just do a double-check and rename it if it's wrong.

I've even used TuneUp Utilities to detect where the data is on my computer, and it can't find them. Bizarre. So, what's taking up all that memory, and, more importantly, how do I get to it? Info:

- Running Windows 7 Ultimate
- There are three windows.old folders. The others have .000 and .001 after it. They have folders within, but none contain my 300 GB of files.
- The C:\ main folder has OTHER files that were in the previous OS C:\ main folder, like program folders from old games, etc.
- I had trouble installing, which might explain the three windows.old folders.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Retrieving old files after Windows 7 custom install

If I were you I would BOOT to the Windows DVD, format the drive, and install the OS from scratch. You're doing yourself no good by continually trying to install a new Windows version from within the existing OS. Unless there is critical data you need to retrieve, just do a clean install.

Hi,

I am pretty new to windows 7 (installed it yesterday), and compared to vista, it seems windows explorer in windows 7 doesn't allow me to sort files other than with the predefined fields (types, size, date modified, etc.) (here I mean that I can't drag a file manually and drop it where I want in a folder and it will stay there, in the exact postion, as we all are used to in previous windows)

Is that how it was meant to be? Are you all getting this behavior too?

This has a few side effects:

1) not being able to manually reorganise files order made them disable the "drag between files" features, and now users may end up dropping on exe or archives and getting unwanted results, drag and drop is not as intuitive as before.

2) native microsoft applications (like the image viewer) used to be able to determine custom file sort, and it made comparing images with different properties very convenient, and it made such microsoft applications really stand out compared to others.

I am a technically advanced user, I understand why they might want to do this: as an example, the fact it can only be sorted according to a logical and predictable process ensures consistency as to selected sorting method and actual sorting; in vista, you could have a certain sorting method selected, and yet have changed the order manually, making the sorting information provided by windows incorrect and inconsistent.

In short, I just want to make sure it is normal that I get this beha... Read more

this is the same thing I am talking about: you position a file manually and there is a black line letting you know where it will be dropped, and it stays there in that order untill next sort.

Hello,

I have been experiencing very intermittent issues with my Windows 7 64-Bit PC. It has been crashing with a Blue Screen ~2-3 Times/week for about a month now. The problem is that there are no .dmp files being created even though the system is set to write Kernel Memory Dumps on system failures. All Drivers are up-to-date as far as I know. The only crash file is from December, which is irrelevant to the current issues. My PC has been stable for over a year with the exception of the December crash which was a one-time thing imo. I do not overclock the PC and all bios settings are default with the exception of the RAM profile being set to XMP-1600 (because my ram by default was running 1333Mhz if I remember correctly).

Things I have done thus far:
CMD Prompt: sfc/scannow; chkdsk (C:, F:, H:, Y:, Z all with the toggle /r
- I presumed that perhaps a bad HDD/SSD was to blame as I recently installed the two 3TB HDD's, but they all checked out OK.
Memtest86 for 36 hours, no bad ram
- I recently installed 32GB ram vs 16GB

Attached is the DM log collector file.

Any help on how to get the system to write crash files, or ideas as to what could be causing the issues would be appreciated.

-Thank you,
Wise

Answer:BSOD on Custom Build With no .dmp files being created

Update: My PC just crashed again... Twice. I disabled the "Automatic restart on system failure" and wrote down some information about the BSOD. Silly me, I found the .dmp file. It was set to be on a HDD that is NOT the OS drive.

Information about the crash: 0x50, Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_area
So I presume a driver is the culprit? Also, the .dmp file is 2.5GB, 300MB compressed, I can upload somewhere if need be.

Edit: Second Crash, the .zip folder of the file is attached.
WhoCrashed blamed hardware: 0x124. I don't have any overclocks (aside from my GTX 680 which is factory overclocked).

I added a custom file extension (".custom" for example) to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, and set its value to "batfile", so it would run as a batch file. This works fine on all my machines, except the one running Windows 10. I get an error: "This app can't run on your PC", when I try to run anything with my custom extension ("file.custom" for example). The solutions online say to disable Windows SmartScreen or enable App Side-loading in the settings, but I do not have a Windows SmartScreen option available and App Side-loading is already enabled. One solution said that if you don't have the Windows SmartScreen option in Settings, then disable it in Windows Defender, but my Windows Defender is already disabled.
I tried changing it's value to "txtfile" and it worked, but I couldn't change it back. Now, any time I make a new file extension, they all open as a text file regardless of what their value is. I've tried restarting the computer. I don't understand what is going on. Can anyone help me solve this issue?

Yeah, so I'm having no luck with this issue since Windows 7 makes it more difficult in this area. I am trying to get more functionality out of my Adobe Design Premium suite and I noticed that .svg and .svgz icons default to the regular .ai file icon. I know the application has an icon specifically reserved for these file types and I've even tried messing with the registry to get the file type to load that particular icon but nothing is working.

What could I do to force the icon to change for the .svg and .svgz file types?

Hello all:
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on a custom PC with Pentium Dual-Core 2.50GHz and 4GB RAM and have been having some "low memory" issues occasionally, seemingly due to Firefox hogging up memory.

So I looked at what my paging file settings were. They're currently set as "system managed": minimum 16MB, recommended 6141MB, and currently allocated 516MB. It says in Windows Help that it automatically sets the initial paging file as minimum four times the RAM plus 300MB, and the maximum as three times the amount of RAM. Obviously it hasn't set these parameters.

My question is: should I change the settings manually to reflect these recommendations?

BTW: I have less than 1GB on the drive, so would Windows change the settings to reflect this, or does it allocate it separately?

Answer:System Managed vs Custom Page File

Sounds to me like you need to upgrade your hard drive (or at least free up some room on it), and your RAM. However, 4GB should probably be enough for general use, including Firefox web browsing.

What exactly is your computer doing? Are you just getting a pop up warning that Firefox is using a lot of RAM? Is your computer crashing?

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

I must apologize for the mislabeling...this started out as a question and then i figured it out and tried to edit...
(if you're a mod please be so kind as to help me out with this title issue...)

Now my u3 flash drive no longer runs that crappy u3 launchpad program and now it runs PortableApps. Except now it autoruns...something that is not possible on most flashdrives.

u3's flash drives are set up so that most of the drive is storage space and 6mb of it is a read only cd rom emulator. the autorun files are stored on this part...
I made autorun using a batch file that quickly looked at each drive letter until it found the portable apps exe. Then it told it to run it. I put this into an iso with an autorun.inf and an icon. i used apache and i copied the site directory structure and made the program think that my computer was u3's server. ran the launchpad installer and it installed my program.

I've edited out the bottom portion of your post with your e-mail as we keep everything on the boards, not behind the scenes.

I'm also going to close this as the potential for malicious use of batches is too great.

Hello! I'm trying to customize image file types (BMP, PNG, JPG & GIF) in Windows 8 by assigning each image type a "different" icon and also adding some custom action (i.e. pass to a specific program which I've written) on BMP files. At the same time, I'm trying to have the new PhotoApp of Windows as the default application for opening all image types (e.g. even when I'm double-clicking an image from my Outlook). I'm using FileTypesMan 1.66 but unfortunately cannot achieve my desired outcome. The reason is this link these file types have together so when I change the icon on one of them, it's applied to all others as well. Same for new actions: When I add a new action, two things happen: First of all, it's completely ignored in Explorer (not shown in the context menu) if I've emptied the "User Choice" option (which was the PhotoApp option as Windows default) and if I enable PhotoApp as user choice, the new action applies to all other image types as well.

My specific question is: Is there a way to break this link between different image files in Windows 8 so that I can fully configure them (Icon, Actions, Default App, ...) independently? Obviously the same applies to many other MIME types as well (such as MPEG videos, ...).

Hey,

I just did a custom install from Vista to Win7 with an upgrade disc. After completing the setup, deleting windows.old, and reinstalling all of my programs, I noticed that there were old folders on the C: drive. It is as if it didn't move anything from the root drive to the windows.old file.

I'm annoyed at myself for not noticing it sooner. Now I don't want to do another install since I spent all that time reinstalling the programs and configuring them for personal use.

I'm tempted to go in and just delete the old folders from the root drive, but I'm nervous. Honestly, I can't be certain of what should and shouldn't be there.
Is there anyway I can tell which folders on the root drive are leftovers? I thought about deleting according to the date modified stamp, but I'm not certain that is safe either.
Can anyone advise me? I really don't want to do another install of Win7, but I was pretty excited about starting with a true clean slate. I just can't help but wonder what else it left behind.

Thanks!

What if you deleted the folders and left them in the Recycle bin? If something doesn't work, you can restore them.

Is there a way to insert a file (bitmap or logo file) into a custom footer in Excel 97 or Excel 2000?

Thanks.

Answer:Insert file in custom footer in Excel 97

Shall I just say NO, Jerri? 'Cause that's the answer.

If you want a graphic to appear at the top (only, doesn't work for footer), you can enlarge the height of row 1 and place the graphic above whatever is in row 1. Then, in File-Page setup, Sheet tab, make sure (at least) row 1 is in the Rows to repeat at top box. (The code to type is $1:$1 for just row 1.)

Hello,

I recently did a repair on my OS 8.1. After this, windows folders such as Program files and Users were moved to windows.old. Now I'm experiencing a lot of issues. For example, when trying to customize the Ribbon in Excel by adding Developer (to start using VBA), I get the following message: "The server drafts location you entered for offline editing is not valid or you do not have permission to access that location. Please specify a location on your local computer". And when I try to change the folder path in Options->Save, the path does not get remembered and I can't customize my ribbon. I have tried basically all advice I've come across through Google with no luck. I'm thinking about re-installing windows if I can't solve this.

Questions:
1. Can the paths that window uses have been messed up after the repair? If so, is there an easy fix?
2. Can I in a simple way restore or use the files stored in windows.old?

Answer:Restoring files and or path after custom upgrade (repair)

I would try a repair install on Excel. If you got a windows.old you have a new windows so some software may need to be reinstalled? Its worth a try.

Hey all!
I have a Acer Aspire 5735Z with a 160GB hard drive which is split into 3 partitions (C: , D: & OEM Reserved Manufacturer) running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The original OS was Windows Vista Home x32. I did a custom install of Win7, leaving all partitions as they were (besides overriding the C: one) and everything went smoothly. Now a month later i realize that i have all the old Windows Vista files along with the new Windows 7 ones. It does not create any problems as it runs exept when updating were the system goes off and then everything is peachy again. It does take up a lot of disk space. So I want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to "fix" it and while i'm at it get rid of the multiple partitions. I know how to do a custom install and how to make these 2 partitions go away obviously, but i have no idea what "role" the 3rd partition plays in the mix. I get that it is something system related. I was thinking that this "OEM" partition might have something to do with the double OS files? So Is it safe to delete it? Or do i leave it, delete the other two partitions and do the install again? Maybe i messed up somehow..

Answer:Custom install Windows 7 but have double OS files due to OEM partition

The OEM reserved manufacturer partition either has some special OEM supplied tools on it or is to be used to restore the machine to factory specifications as of the day it was manufactured.

Regardless, you don't need it if you are going to do a clean install and have no intention of ever going back to factory specs--which would mean Vista.

There's a pretty good chance that reserved manufacturer partition is useless anyway because you've already installed Win 7 over Vista.

I'd back up my personal data, boot from the install disc, delete all 3 partitions when you get to the "where do you want to install Windows" screen and install to that unallocated space.

You should end up with a system reserved partition and C. Nothing else.

After you finish the install, you can then shrink C and make a new D if you want to use a D partition for data. Or you could make a C of a particular size during the install immediately after deleting all partitions, rather than just installing Windows to the entire unallocated space. And then make a D of the remaining space after you get Windows installed.

Windows Update frequently puts my custom text settings for these 5 fonts (below) back to their default values. This is an annoyance, to have to re-do them every time. I was wondering:

1.) How do I create a backup of the original / default values? Where are these Registry keys? (is this how you refer to them?)

2.) I have been changing them in Winaero Tweaker . . . Could I then make one Registry file that can restore all 5 of them at once?

. . . So, if the fonts go back to the default values, I think I would then just have to click the Reg file, do a Restart, and then they'd be back . . . (right?)

WinaeroTweaker does not have a way to do this:

How to import and export tweaks you did with Winaero Tweaker - Winaero . . . 08/15/17 Version 0.9 . . . 4. A number of tweaks related to advanced system appearance like "System font", "Status bar font" and so on won't be exported. The advanced appearance options are not officially supported in modern Windows versions. Importing them can cause unexpected behaviors in the OS, so I have decided to exclude them from import and export for now. Please consider configuring these options manually when required . . . https://winaero.com/blog/import-export-winaero-tweaker/

3.) If I wanted to change the font, size, or bold/non-bold, how do you know what values to change, and what they are? Is it possible to do this manually, without Winaero Tweaker?

I put extra 1 gig. of Adata ram memory on my SR1520NX computer.
I guess that would be the maximum ram I could have on my p.c., since
I only have 2 slots, each able to accept max. of 1 gig..

Shown here-

I have total of 1.87 gigs. of ram as shown.

What should I type in for my Page file Custom Initial and Maximum size to adjust my virtual memory?

I try to follow these instructions-

Windows XP Tips - Virtual Memory Tweak - YouTube

1.87 X 2 = 3.74 gigs.

3.74 X 1024 = 3829 gigs.

So should I put 3829 gigs. as my initial and maximum page file size ?

After I put that and reboot.

In virtual memory it says.

Total paging file size for all drives

Minimum 2 MB

Recommended 2878 MB

Currently 3829 MB

So should I now put in 2878 MB, for initial and maximum page size file, since that is what is recommended ?

Is it that since I have a lot of RAM memory, I do not need to put a high number as intitial and maximum page size file, since it will slow down the
hard drive if I set it too high ? Since I don't have any message saying I have
low virtual memory at the moment. What should I set the initial and maximum page file size at ?

Thanks

Answer:Page file Custom Initial and Maximum size

See the notes here How to set performance options in Windows XP
you should allow windows to manage the page file size there is no need to alter it.

What is the best way to....
- Make a file that users can download which has a custom icon and takes them to the website of my choice?

Currently,
I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a website of which I have assigned a custom icon (.ico file) and everything looks and works great on my computer. The customer icon is not a Windows default .ico file

I save the file to SharePoint 2010 and when users download the file (shortcut.url) they don't get the custom icon, just a shortcut with a missing icon image.

Answer:Download Shortcut.url File = Lose the Custom Icon for It?

Hello Poagman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal for a referenced custom icon on your PC to not be included with the shortcut like this.

About all you can do is to also include the icon with the shortcut so that they can save the icon where they like on their PC, then change the shortcut's icon to target the icon's location on their PC.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

I'm currently taking lots of cool MCITP and MCSE classes and I've just been playing around with all the cool stuff you can do. However, I like to put these to my own personal skills as well. I used a Server 2008 VM to deploy Windows 7 Ultimate to my laptop. I then fully configured the machine and installed the programs I would like in my custom .WIM. I have run sysprep, booted to PE, and then captured my image.

Now what I would like to do is apply this image to my custom built desktop gaming computer. I have done this previously with Win7 Pro x64 successfully (same entire process) but I would like to go back to x86 (no need to have x64 and it has been a little unstable)..

I figured while I was at it this I would set the two 250GB SATA HDDs I have in it to use the hardware RAID on the motherboard.

My question is: How would I go about booting to PE, installing the RAID drivers, and then installing my custom .wim using the imagex /apply command?

Would I be able to begin a dvd install just to install the raid drivers and then start over to PE?

Answer:How would I apply a custom .wim file to a hardware RAID w/imagex?

I want to configure USMT5 to automatize the migration of W7 machines (from W7 to W7) since we have many computers in the company, it would be really faster to use this tool to load profiles, application datas...
I tested it and it works well for default settings (favorites in IE, toolbars, desktop, walpapper...) but now I want to integrate some custom folders, registry keys...
I created my XML file and my XML validator approved it, then I launched a scanstate containing /i:myfile.xml, which is correct too, on a network shared folder.
Then I launch loadstate with the same i:/myfile.xml, but nothing happens, just saying OK without doing the job.. Default folders like migapp.xml or migdocs.xml are successfully applicated.
I tested with the following XML file :

<migration urlid="http://www.microsoft.com/migration/1.0/migxmlext/configMigrator"> <component type="Documents" context="System"> <displayName>Move KBox settings</displayName> <role role="Data"> <rules> <include> <objectSet> <pattern type="File"> %USERPROFILE%\KBox\* [*]</pattern> </objectSet> </include> </rules> </role> </component></migration>

Maybe there is a problem with %USERPROFILE%.

I'm running Windows XP but this seems to happen on every OS running IE8. Previous to the IE8 update it did work fine.

The problem is that we have a custom file format (.RCV) which is an application save file basically a ZIP file with our own extension containing all the dependencies of the project.

Some project files has been exposed for customers to download and open in a viewer application which reads these .RCV files and it has worked just fine.

But after the IE8 update, instead of choosing to save/open the .RCV where opening it would choose our viewer application it now says that it's a .ZIP file so it would save a ZIP or open it as a compressed folder which of course it wrong.

From what I gather, this is caused by mime type and as .RCV doesn't match any existing mime type it now open it based on content rather than just saving it with the extension which is actually has.

I've found a setting in Internet Explorer 8 under security which says "Open files based on content, not file extension" but this settings is set to disabled.

I've also found that if I add the web site to "Trusted sites" it will (!) open/save the files as .RCV and not .ZIP but since this is a client side setting it doens't really help us.

I've tried to use TYPE= in the link to specify different mime type but it still saves the files as .ZIP.

I think this is a very strange feature, why would someone link to files with a different extension than .ZIP if the file w... Read more

I am trying to replace the Thinkpad bios logo with a customized version that includes our company logo/info.  The logo instructions that come with the bios update say the max resolution is 640x480, but when I put in a logo file that size it appears to be streched a bit to fit the widescreen display.  Does anyone know what the ideal resolution for the logo file should be so that it scales up to fit the display without streching? Also, anyone know where I can get the default logo screen as a bmp?  I'd much prefer to just add our logo to the original lenovo logo screen if possible.

Answer:Recommended Resolution of Custom Bios Logo File

The BIOS only render at VGA (640x480), which then stretches to fit.
You'd have to design a widescreen image, which means ~850x480, then shrink to 640x480.

Can you have more than one custom command line for an extension and use the RightClick context menu to chose the one you want to use?

Can you not just right-click the file and choose Open with? Once you have browsed to the software and open the data file, that program should thereafter show up in the Open with list.

Not sure about creating new system menu options that would react to only one file type.

I have windows 7 build 7264 running with no problems, but I cant seem to find a way to change the file & folder options toolbar thing in explorer. You know, the bar at the top that gives you the options: Include in library, Share with, Burn, etc. I would like to remove the options I dont use & add ones from xp like Delete & Copy to folder. I realize I can still do these things from the right click context menu but its an extra step, I liked the file & folder tasks pane in xp, wish there was a way to use it on Windows 7. But if I could atleast have that option at the top would be nice. Believe me I been googling for hours & cant find a thing cept other people requesting the file & folder tasks pane from xp. Any help would really make my day Thanx in advance.....

Answer:Custom file & folder options tool/task bar

Could be because maybe there is no way? But if you find a way of making the Libraries entry disappear from the Win Explorer left pane let me know .

Located here:
C:\Users\JohnDoe\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Custom Dictionary.txt

All I can find online is information about adding language dictionaries, but I have 38kb of personal, motorsport, business, etc. terms that I've collected over the decades and centralize in a LibreOffice Writer custom dictionary, and can easily copy and paste that into my Firefox custom dictionary ? but Chrome includes a checksum at the very bottom, and also uses linefeeds instead of carriage returns (or vise versa). Looks fine in Wordpad, but with Notepad the text is all wadded up into one block of text.

So when I copy/paste my extra words (with the wrong linefeeds) into the Chrome custom dictionary file, boot up Chrome, it fails and auto-generates a new empty custom dictionary file. Not good.

The unduly burdensome workaround would be to copy/paste my custom words into some online forum page (like where I'm typing now) and right-click on each and manually add every word. Not good.

Surely I'm missing something really simple.

Thank you in advance for you assistance.

After installing Dropbox, I notice that there's now a custom link to the Dropbox folder in my File Explorer > Navigation Pane > Desktop list (see screenshot below).

Does anyone know how I can add such (sym?)links to other directories on the computer?

Specifically looking for ways to add to list in the "Desktop" section of Navigation Pane... not the "Quick access" list.

My thinking is... I'd like to consolidate shortcuts to my custom cloud storage folders. Right now there's OneDrive (built in to W10) and Dropbox, and I'd like to add similar links for my Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, etc. directories. Trying to have them all appear together under "Desktop", rather than split between Desktop and Quick Access.

I added one of my pics to the stock pics in windows XP desktop display file in the control panel and have been using it as my desktop background. I didn't realize it would move the pic instead of copying it. Now I want to get the pic back so I can print or email it. I've tried searching for it but nothing. Any ideas? Thanks

Answer:retrieve custom pic from desktop display file in control panel

The file should not have been moved. Copy is the usual action.

Do you know its name? Look in Windows or Windows\system32 for some wallpaper images.

My PC updated Windows 10 yesterday afternoon ("Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)". After rebooting, it completely screwed all my custom file associations (mostly for media files: photos, audio, and video).

A few minutes after the reboot, the Action Center started firing popups at me, one after the other, every few seconds:

"An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV."

with a different file extension for each popup (avi, bmp, mp4, and so on) . Even .pdf files were changed from Adobe Reader to Microsoft Edge. As well, all my custom context menu items for these same file types were also deleted. I spent a lot of time setting these associations up and now they were all obliterated. I'd backed them all up in a .reg file but running it didn't do anything. So with a heavy (and angry) sigh I started manually changing the associations back to the way I had them. However, each time I finished making a change within seconds the Action Center would fire the same message as before at me for the file type I'd just changed and it would be reset back to the MS default again.

Finally in exasperation, I just used System Restore to go back before the updates and that solved the problem. Now, the Action Center keeps nagging me to set a time to reinstall this same update. I know I can't block it indefinitely, and t... Read more

Greetings,
I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something)
I'm not an expert batch file maker either.

I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that updates, changes are easier for me to make.

I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE
The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned

The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes.

My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE.

I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it

I use a variable to capture the letter drive

I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it

When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply.

The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file.
In my test, I can get this to work over and over.

When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work.

I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller.

My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specifie... Read more

Hi everyone,I'm just wondering why there is a 30kB limit on custom boot logo size, and what would happen if I were to try bypassing it. Is there actually just 30kB reserved for the logo in the boot NVRAM? And can the BIOS really decode 3 different file formats (bmp, gif, jpg) or does the logo image get converted to one standardized bitmap format before being flashed? Thanks for any info on this!

Answer:Lenovo w550s custom boot logo file size

I actually did some testing on this about a month ago. The BIOS can indeed decode the different image formats, and does not always do a good job so it's easy to get a black or garbage-filled screen during boot if the images are not saved exactly how the BIOS likes them. In fact, the data in your selected image file is flashed to the BIOS exactly - no conversions take place. Fortunately the BIOS still boots even if it can't decode the logo properly. The actual space reserved for logos is about 75kB as far as I can remember, and the BIOS stores 2 different logos- one for legacy boot and one for EFI. If you change the EFI logo to a 1x1 px gif, you get lots of space for the legacy logo and vice versa. A custom command line to winflash is required to bypass the naive for size checks though. If anyone is actually interested and too lazy to figure it out yourself, reply and I'll dig up the details.

I generally use the "details" view in Windows File Explorer a lot. This is an example:

As you can see, I can sort my file types in various ways by clicking on the different columns at the top. However, I have a question:

Is it possible to create a custom column in File Explorer that I can use to sort files by based upon their file extension? I'm not talking about changing the columns that are already there or picking from the huge list that you get when right click at the top and pick "More." What I want to do is create a custom column that I can enter text in for based upon the file extension which I can then use to sort my files into groups (such as audio, video, projects, etc.)

This could help me stay much more organized in File Explorer. However, you may be wondering why I don't just use the option to sort my files by "type" or "extension." The reason that I don't want to do this is because then not all of my files will be in the precise order that I want them to. Even though I found a way to modify the "Type" text for SOME files, as you can probably see in the image, I have not been able to for ALL file types (such as PNG, JPG, and JPEG), which is a real roadblock. This is because FileTypesMan is an old program and Registry Tweaks don't seem to be working even after I restart Windows Explorer.

Because of this, I'm wondering if there's a way to create a custom column that I can enter custom text into (which w... Read more

I use Winaero Tweaker on a couple of computers, to increase font sizes. Sometimes, when there's a Windows update, the custom settings go back to the default. Using an ICC profile helped, with the settings not being retained for some other reason, but it still does this after a windows update.

Do you know where these settings are, and how I can export the good Reg Key, so that when it happens again, I can just click that, and do a Restart to easily get them back? I think that's how it works. It's a pain to have to manually re-do them every time. Here are my notes. Winaero Tweaker indicates that it's not do-able:

So, I'm extremely confused.

I simply tried to delete an mp3 file that I had, but it said "You require permission from an admin". I've encountered this before, so I knew what to do for the most part. I right-clicked, selected "Take Ownership", but still couldn't delete it. I went to properties... and this is what showed up:

I don't get it, inside the folder it just looks like a simple mp3 file.
Does anyone know why it's telling me the file has 12 files in it?
EDIT: So, it's changed to a regular mp3 file now... but I still cannot delete it. At all. I'm and admin on this computer (and the only user, I might add) and I still can't get rid of it.

Answer:Can't delete an .mp3 file (properties says it has 12 files in it...?)

Move the file to the c: root. Just to make it easier. Open a CMD as admin. type cd.. hit enter. Do this again till your at the c: root. Now type del /f filename "filename is the name of the file you want to delete". Hit enter. Hope this helps.

I recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate. Now I can't change the artist, album, genre, etc. info on any of my music files when I go to the file's Properties and under the Details tab, or with the tags at the bottom of the Windows Explorer. If I try to change something and click apply or OK, it just changes right back. I have all the permissions checked under my account. I tried unchecking the Read-Only attribute of the folder and files, but it after I click apply or OK, again, it changes back when I reopen the dialog box. There are several other threads with the same problem, but none have a satisfactory answer/solution. I had no problem with this before I upgraded. Please help, it's very frustrating. Also, I'd rather a SOLUTION from Microsoft rather than a way around it with third party tag software. Thanks.

Answer:Cannot edit file properties for mp3 files in Windows 7

Hi,

I would like to confirm if this issue occurs on every music file.

You can take a file from C:\Users\Public\Music\Sample Music and test it.

If it only occurs on some files, please let me know the file format and where they came from.

To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:

Enable built-in admin account
==============
1. Click Start, click "All Programs", please find and open "Accessories" folder.
2. Please right-click on "Command Prompt" item and select "Run as administrator".
3. Please type the following command line in to the coming window.

net user administrator /active:yes

Note: There is a space between "Administrator" and "/active:yes".

4. Log off and log on the Administrator account.

I am able to edit Properties of a .jpeg file while in File Explorer. I right click on a .jpeg file and am able to type information into some of the fields in the Details tab.
When I try to do the same thing to a .mts video file, I can't get a cursor in any of the fields that would be editable if it was a .jpeg file.
I use my computer a lot. But I'm not a coder. I know nothing about command line or editing the registry.

As of today I can't do the following anymore:

- deleting folders using shift-del or just del
- view properties of folders and files using RMB
- view properties by using the "file" menu in the window-bar
- view properties of the files for which ZoneAlarm gives a warning

I can delete stuff by dragging it into the Recycle Bin and then emptying it.

I think the last thing I did before all this was uninstalling Norton 2005 Trial and installing AVG Anti-Virus.

I tried solving it by Windows' System Recovery, but that didn't work. I tried to see if there was a special recovery-option for vital files on the Windows CD, but if it's there, I can't find it...

Help?

Answer:Can't use Shift-Del, can't use RMB on folders/files, can't view properties of file...

Try Running the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

Question: my custom CD

Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me if I can make a custom CD on windows. I was able to get my XP CD and slipstream it with SP2 but would I be able to do this with some of my most common used program. I know you can get these CDs from manufatures that go with thire system, like if its a HP, they will have thire own cd with OS and all drivers and programs or if its a tosiba they will have thire own. So I would just like to know if there is a way I can do that with my XP cd SP2 and some of my program like MS office and photoshop ect ect. Can someone please get back to me it would be greatly appreciatede.

Thank You

Answer:my custom CD

You can't include applications with a Windows installation disk. Computer manufacturers appear to do this by creating a restore disk which is not the same as a Windows installation disk. You can do something similar by using an image creation utility such as Acronis True Image (http://www.acronis.com). You would install Windows and any applications and then create an image of the hard drive or partition(s) which you would use to reinstall or restore your system. This would be used instead of the Windows installation disk.

If you only want to include drivers, you would need to create an unattended installation disk which is a bit involved for the average home user.

Question: My custom PC

Hello all,

I recently bought a new computer and had it custom made to what i wanted it to be. I have a few questions about it though.

First off i will tell you what it is.
It is made up of the following hardware:

Mobo - Asus m3a76-cm pci-ex 1gb lan
Processor - AMD Athlon II x2 215 2.7ghz dual core 45nm, AM3 2mb Cache
Cooling - Spire Kestrel-King II AMD 64 fan
Ram - 3gb (3x1gb) ddr2 pc5300 667 dual channel
Graphics - GeForce 9400GT 1gb PCI express 16x dual head, tv out
optical drive - 22x Lite On DVD +-RW dual layer
Case - Cooler Master Elite 310 with side window and front usb
power supply - Logysis 480w ATX power supply

OK so here are my questions:

1. What are your overall thoughts of this system?
2. Can i overclock it and if so how much while still being stable?
3. With the fan i got do you know how cold it will be?
4. What the heck is dual layer?
5. Will the 480w power supply be enough for all this?
6. In the picture i chose this case because it looked good, was cheap and it had lights. Will it come with the lights or do i have to add them?

I ordered it online and it has not yet come
Thanks for the help, and all suggestions, comments, and questions are welcome.

The power supply will handle that system, although i don't know anything about Logysis PSU's. You should be able to get 700Mhz to 1Ghz OC from that CPU with ample cooling. Dual layer is a technology that lets you burn data to two layers of the DVD that sit atop one another. Different light wavelengths reach the upper layer (and 'burn') data, than do the lower data layer...(thats the very short version)
as far as the "what do you think?" question, i guess that depends on what you paid, and what its intended use is. It is not going to be much of a gaming machine with that GPU. but other than that it really goes back to what you are expecting it to do.
