Preferred Solution: Support question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Support question

I don't really understand your question, but yes if they ask for the DXDiag.txt file then just attach it to an e-mail?

Which game is it you are trying to get working? You may have some luck by right clicking on the game shortcut, going to properties and then picking some Win98 compatibility settings.

This is a General question regarding the end of support for XP. I realise at the end date the computer should be backed up in case you have to format the disc at any time after the end of the support period.

My question is does the built in Windows back up in XP when backing up the system include the installed updates? Or is it best to use third party software to do this.

shipboard

Answer:[SOLVED] End ofThis is a general question regarding the end of support for XP support

I believe Windows just backs up your personal files and won't do the entire OS. You'll need a 3rd party program to do the entire HDD.

Also you really should think about upgrading to Windows 7. Staying on XP after the end support date is not recommended as you will lose security updates from Microsoft as well as patches.

I have a MSI K9A2 CF v2 wich with a bios update will support AM3. I am just wondering how this works...Don't AM3 processors need ddr3 ram? My board only supports ddr2 up to 1066...

How would this work?

Thanks

Derek

Answer:AM3 support question

Taken from Wikipedia:

Socket AM3 is a CPU socket for AMD processors. It follows directly from Socket AM2+. AM3 was launched on February 9th, 2009, alongside the initial grouping of Phenom II processors designed for it.[3] The sole principal change from AM2+ to AM3 is support for the AM3 processors' integrated memory controller, which now supports DDR3 in addition to DDR2.Click to expand...

Alright, here's the problem my MSI P6N Diamond is only a few years old. However, the modern Core 2 Duo's and Core 2 Quad's are NOT supported by it, even though it boasted quad core support. And the CPU's that are supported have been cut out of stock because they are a bit dated like the board, and the standing state of the economy proves them to be less profitable to keep hardware like that in stock. So, does anyone know of any workaround for this or am I going to have to replace my motherboard? If that's the case I'll just sell this whole computer sans the drives and build me another. I don't like the tower, I got this thing in a trade, and I'd have to replace the power supply, CPU, GPU, possibly the RAM, and definitely replace the hard drive to play any modern games worth a crap. The GPU is a big bottleneck but if I replace it my overclocked E4500 would then become the bottleneck. So I'm in a bit of a bind here because when I get a job here soon I won't be pulling that much cash and I'd really rather not have to shell out for a new rig. I'm hoping on working on getting my license this summer so money will be going to a car (an old one, I hate new cars, I can't work on 'em and theres too much electronic crap to go wrong). So if anyone has any workarounds, tell me, this is driving me nuts, my board isn't that old but its already outdated. I've looked around to see if places sell the older CPU'... Read more

Answer:CPU Support question

Quotethe modern Core 2 Duo's and Core 2 Quad's are NOT supported by it, even though it boasted quad core support. What do you mean by "modern"?   Your board supports socket LGA 775, and virtually any processor supported by LGA 775 is compatible with the board..QuoteAnd the CPU's that are supported have been cut out of stock Your board supports these LGA 775 processors and as far as I can see, they are available for purchase:Core 2 Extreme Core 2 Duo Pentium 4 Pentium D Pentium XE Celeron DCore 2 ExtremeCore 2 DuoPentium 4Pentium DCeleron DIf you look around you more than likely find some Pent. XE (extreme edition) processors available as well..Edit: If the board doesn't support any LGA 775 quad-core CPUs it's because the chipset on the board doesn't support them..

Emachine, I have two for my kids. It is common for the psu to blow these mobo's they are 4 years old. The first I am rebuilding because it blew out. My son's I am replacing the psu before this happens. I put in a thermaltake 430w. It is a little bigger size than the one I pulled however it does fit. The rear fan has some room against my dvd player but not as much as the old one.1- Is this a major problem? 2-Should I go with the kind where you only plug in the wires you need so as to leave more open space when I replace the one I'm rebuilding for my daughter?

I have a foxconn 661-m03 motherboard.

Motherboard

Ive never really thought about this problem, but on the manual for my motherboard it says it supports ram modules: 128/256/512.
But it has two ram slots and supports up to 2 GB. Will it be able to read x2 1 GB sticks?

Also is it good to push your motherboard to its max.
For example my motherboard support P4 up to 3.0ghz. Is it fine to get a 3.0ghz cpu and 2 GB of ram? Or is it bad to max out your cpu. Ex.Will it have heating problems?

Answer:Motherboard support question..

In my opinion, it's perfectly alright. As long as you have a good psu and sufficient cooling, there's nothing to worry about. Go mad!

And just so you know, your link is just a url to the microsoft website, not the mobo lol.

Is Acer going to commit to, eventually, supporting Windows 10 on the myriad of laptops it sold that are not (yet?) eligible for the upgrade...  Or, do we just up and throw these away and go to a different manufacturer?

Answer:Simple Support Question

If a machine isn't eligible for the upgrade, it's most often because there is hardware in the machine that is too old for the manufacturer to support. An example would be an 8 or 10 year old video card from ATI. In those years the company was sold and the new owners don't particularly want to spend money on support for those few users who are still using hardware that old. Most machines from the last few years work without any effort except to make sure all updates have been completed before starting the upgrade. In those cases Acer doesn't have to do special drivers to allow them to be used with W10 and the machines aren't on the list of who is getting new drivers.

What's the difference between 1st, 2nd & 3rd line technical support?Thanks in advance...

Answer:Technical Support (IT) Question

1st line = poorly trained, reading from a script that usually begins "OK, so first format your drive and reinstall Windows"2nd line = more experienced, writes own script that usually begins "Boot to DOS, fdisk, format, then reinstall Windows"3rd line (usually reserved for corporate account customers only) - doesn't need a script, says "Install a new server, buy another 400 workstations, I'll send you a patch that you can apply to your new network that will solve the problem"(With apologies to those who actually provide a decent level of customer support.)

Thanks for any replies.

Answer:A question about RMTP support

I'm not sure if I understand your question. Any device that is able to communicate over TCP can support RMTP. You'd just have write the library that supports that protocol. If you are looking for a complete library, I'd probably start here:FluorineFx | Home

I'm trying to logging into an old account I had on Dailymotion, my password wasn't working and trying to reset wouldn't work so I contactd support. The support is partially in another language and is asking me for my full name, address, identity card scan -- none of which I used to sign up with-- to delete my account or change my password for me. It's confusing me because it looks a lot like a phishing scam but maybe they had a lot of attacks or something? I'm not sure how to reply back and I just to see what kind of playlists I had before I delete it. It's so weird!

Answer:Is this a normal support question?

If the information they are asking for wasn't in the account to begin with, what are they attempting to verify (assuming that is the reason for all of the questions)? Verifying you are you before resetting the password.

Hi All, I own and operate a computer repair shop and I am always ending up on sevenforums finding answers to the many varied problems I encounter. So thank you to all the information that you post here, and all the free help you offer people.

I want to know how you learn to do what you guys do? I would love my staff to have the skills that you guys do. Where do you learn what you know? Can we learn from some of the admins here at a cost to our business? I am always looking for better ways to repair computers rather than the format/reinstall option that everyone in our area subscribes to

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-60416 This page shows the currently supported processors with the newest bios revision, which I have flashed my tower with. It currently has a P4 630 and I would like to upgrade it to a Pentium D 945. I noticed the list skips from 940 to 950, so do you think I will have a problem if I try to install a Pentium D 945? I don't think I will, as this person (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-and-M-Series-ThinkCentre/M52-8113-D5U-ThinkCentre-Processor-CPU-Upgrad...) installed a 925 which is not on the list and it worked fine for him I guess.

I have Gigabyte GA-7vaxp motherboard with a AMD Athlon 2200 Chip in it and everything has been working fine for about 2 months.

Then last night I decided to format my computer and reinstall my OS. After I was all done I had gotten my computer all the way back up and everything reinstalled. I went to windows update and did all my updates and then went to go restart.

My computer would get to the post and then took a long time for it to see the cd rom drive and hard drive. And after it found them it wouldn't boot it would just hang so I restarted again.

And went into bios to change to boot order so hard drive would be first also why I was in there I hit the load optimized defaults and then top performance and then saved and exit

When I went to go reboot the computer now it only goes to a black screen with a flashing _ in the top left hand corner and I cant get past that it wont post or anything I have tried putting the jumper I think is the reset bios on and booting up and then taking it off and still nothing.

When I start it it just goes straight to a black screen no post or anything. Also when I took my hard drive out and put it into another computer of mine it wouldn't boot up its like its toast. if anyone could help me with figuring out what to do next I would really appreciate it.

Answer:GA-7vaxp support question

Hi There!

It sounds like the drive may in fact be toasted.

If the BIOS sees it correctly, go to the Drive Maker's website and download the diagnostic utilities. If it's a Western Digital drive, you can download "Data Lifeguard" from thier site. run the tests and see if anything fails. it almost sounds like the boot sector or the S.M.A.R.T. is shot.

Also, have you tried changing the data cable and resetting the jumper? might be a simple case of corrosion!
Good Luck!

I did a "Help & Support" search for "Superfetch" and came up with something to do with IE. Did a search for "Prefetch" and got a correct answer.
However, in "services" (services.msc), there is no "Prefetch" service, but there is a
"Superfetch" service. Am I missing something ??
Just a curious question, again.

Answer:Windows 7 HP (OEM) Help & Support Question

Prefetching functions are handled by a different Windows component.

Although, "killing" Superfetch service will prevent system from creating the ".pf" files necessary for the Prefetching function.

I'm no longer using XP, and haven't been for a few years now, but I was wondering something. On the MS website, it says that XP has entered the extended support phase, meaning that if someone needs tech support they'd have to pay. It says that XP mainstream support is totally done, but it says something about SP2 and 3 being supported until 2010. What's the difference here? If SP2 and 3 are still being "supported" until 2010, then how can XP support be dropped? Am I missing something here?

I guess I'm asking how can sp2 and 3 be "supported" if XP is is in extended phase? Or is there something I'm missing? Any clarification would be appreciated, thanks.

EDIT: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean31
Support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will end on July 13, 2010. This date was established when Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) was released on April 21, 2008.

This announcement is in line with the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy for Windows service packs. This policy states that when a new service pack is released, Microsoft will provide 24 months of support for the previous service pack for products that belong to the Windows product family.

Note The release of a service pack has no impact on Mainstream Support and Extended Support end dates. Therefore, there will be no change to the previously announced end of Mainstream and Extended Support dates for Windows XP. Windows XP will transition from the Mainstream Supp... Read more

Answer:Windows XP extended support question(s).

Mainstream support for an OS is 10 years - 5 of which is mainstream support where all updates (security or otherwise) are free, then 5 years of extended support where all of the extra, nice-to-have, cute stuff stops coming out and only security updates and service packs are free.

Pinched within that 10 year OS lifespan are the OS service packs. Each OS service pack is supported (as an OS + SP combination) until the end of life of the product (in this case, the end of WIndows XP's 10 years) or 24 months after a newer service pack comes out.

Since XP SP3 was released, it put SP2 on a 24 month death watch until it is no longer supported at all. At that point, no updates (security or otherwise) will be provided for XP SP2 - only the newer SP3.

In turn, SP3 will be supported until the end of Windows XP's 10 years.

Theoretically, if they came out with SP4, SP3 would be have only 24 months to live - and SP4 would live until the end of XP's 10 year lifespan.

But since the end of XP's 10 year lifespan is so near, it's safe to say SP3 will be the last service pack - so there's no chance of an SP4 (which would have a very short lifespan anyhow since it would quickly bump up against the overall 10 year lifespan of the XP operating system).

That's probably as clear as mud, but that's how it works. I hope it helps...

hi,

I am about to graduate with a computer science degee, and always enjoyed tech support.
I worked as a part time sys admin for a 60 employee company for 9 months, and now
I do it as a part time thing and only have a handfull of small businesses as clients.
I would like to give it a shot as a career, and would like some advice from those altruistic techies out there.... well you all are altruistic or else you would not be reading this....

basically my question is what resources do you recommend and what tools should i have?

i am reading a big book about the A+ certification... learning a few things about OLD computers... and don't forsee a reason to pay 350 for the certification soon...

and my tools are:
a computer repair kit (screwdrivers...!)
a power supply tester
a post decoder card (just got it, still learning to make the most of it...)
Norton Ghost
Partition Magic

i feel i lack diagnositc tools
is there an essential diagnostic kit out there that i do not know about it?
i've heard of a few very expensive ones...
(i don't mind putting together a collection of free tools instead of one expensive one)

any tips from you guys would be great.
thanks.

Answer:question for experienced tech support ppl

Hmm, where to start.

As for certifications, the A+ is a good place to start. It might be a bit archaic, but my workplace (major IT tech support company) does the training and requires that you have it to progress, and tons of companies still regard it quite highly. And anyway, knowing about the older stuff really helps with understanding a lot of the newer stuff. So I'd go for that. Microsoft certifications don't hurt either. After those maybe a couple of linux ones, or a CCNA if you're into networking.

Your diagnostic tools are a good start. Generally so long as you've got a good set of screwdrivers you're laughing. As for software, I'd highly recommend you get some kind of bootable diagnostics disc. Two I'd recommend are Insert (http://www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html), which is a small and primitive, but potentially lifesaving bootable Linux disc, or if you're more of a Windows boy I'd strongly suggest Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ubcd4win.com). Bit of a pain to make the disc, but once done it's invaluable, full of really useful utilities. Both of those will serioualy come in handy for systems that no longer boot. The Windows one even lets you clean off spyware and viruses. Not bad for free.

I'm sure there's many more things that you could be doing, but that's my

Hi ~  I have a case number for battery replacement for my daughter's laptop.   We have been waiting for a couple of weeks for it to arrive.  I have tried to call to get the status or a tracking number and am unable to get through now because our warranty expired Jan 1 (but the problem was assigned the case number and resolution before the warranty expired).   I cannot get through on the phone because I do not have a valid in-warranty s/n anymore.  I cannot get through on the chat because I do not have a valid in-warranty s/n anymore.   Even though I have a current and valid case number.   I tried an email that I  had for them and it is no longer in use.   Ugh.  Any suggestions to get through to Acer and see where the battery is??? Thank you for reading and for your help!Denise

Answer:Question: Which PSU to support GTX8800? PSU upgrading

You're better off getting a branded PSU from Corsair, OCZ, etc. I doubt that one from eBay will actually output 650W...
Also is the 8800 GTX even in production any more? Even if it is you're better off spending your money on a Radeon 5750 or something, which would probably cost about the same.

Hello, I bought the Dell XPS 9350 Intel core i5 model on Amazon less then a month ago and it worked perfectly until I started noticing a very annoying buzzing coming from the fan with little pressure on the internals. I contacted two different del support reps and they both suggested sending it to the Dell depot. I already shipped it and it is en route but my question is regarding their part replacement. In the notesI requested that they only use brand new parts in my system and not refurbished or used parts. I have a good amount of doubt that they will do that but I am wondering if there is a way I can tell if they put a refurb part in or not? And after reading the horror stories of the depot if my laptop continues to have issues what steps can I take to get a full refund or replacement? (Dell warranty is good for around a year still, Amazon return is not possible anymore)
Thanks

I am an 82 year young person. I have windows 10 on a Lenova desktop computer. I just downloaded Driver Support software. In my control Panel, I list realtek. Is this a redundant system with Driver Support? If so , can I just delete realtek?? Thank you

Answer:Windows 10 Driver Support question

Not sure what you mean. Realtek is the company that has lots of hardware, such as onboard sound cards, Ethernet and Card Readers. If you have any of those on the computer I wouldn't delete the drivers as it would stop the functionality of the device.

I recommend not using 3rd party driver support software. Some are good, but some are programs that can put viruses on the computer. It's always recommended to get the drivers from the lenovo support website or download the latest drivers from each individual vendor.

Hi, Sorry if Ive posted on the wrong forum but laptops looked like the closest option. Yesterday I clean installed the Dell factory image using reset PC.
All went well but when I checked Reliability History it showed an unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning for Dell Data Vault when Dell Support Assist was installed. During Dell Support Assist installation there was an earlier successful application installation and reconfiguration of Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.7.0) but that was successfully removed 15 minutes later for Dell Data Vault (version 4.3.8.0) ...this was when the unsuccessful application reconfiguration warning was flagged. At the same time  a successful application removal message for Dell data Vault (version 4.3.8.0). is also shown. Im not sure if that means now that I don't have Dell Data Vault installed.
Is this anything to be concerned about? Im not even sure what Dell Data Vault does. Is there anything I need to do or will it successfully update itself later on?

Hi, I´m new to the board an have some questions about my beloved Thinkpad R60. It served me very well for a good time (upgraded my RAM to 3 Gb some time ago), but I fell now it´s time to get my system a little updated. First of all I only have a 80GB HDD, which is way too small, so I want to replace it with something bigger. I was thinking about the Western Digital WD5000BEVT Scorpio Blue 500GB. Will my Thinkpad support a HDD that big? I made a BIOS update a couple of minutes ago, is there anything else I would have to do? Furthermore I want to upgrade to Windows 7 (running XP at the moment). Got a Radeon X1300 and the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor told me it will do fine.Is there anything important I have to know or do before installing Win 7? Can I just buy a new HDD and Win 7 (think I need the 32-bit version since I have a Core Duo T2400, right?), put the HDD in and install my new Windows right away?  Thank you very much for your help!Jan

Answer:R60 HDD size support and Win7 question

Welcome to the forum! You're on the right track.Current CPU in your R60 will only run a 32-bit version of any OS.ATi X1300 will do just fine in W7.Your machine will take a 500GB SATA laptop drive, as long as it's 9.5mm/2.5" format with no issues.Enjoy the upgrade.

I'm wanting to add another 2gigs of memory to my XP machine, but I don't know how XP will react to 4gigs.

would it work or no? if not, I suppose I could dig out my copy of Vista which does support 4gigs, right?

please comment on either one.

Answer:dumb question: does XP support 4GBs of RAM?

Is that version of xp 64 bit? 4gb wouldn't matter on 32 bit.

Hi! i have a linksys 3200 router and i am wondering what all External USB HDD work with it. I have a WD 1 TB but it doesn't seem to work with it. I know that with the latest Firmware the router supports drives upto 3 TB so i know my capacity is not the issue but rather it seems that the drive itself just isn't recognized at all.

Anyone know of any drives they know work with this model?

Answer:Routers with built in USB storage support question

If you are running stock firmware on the 3200 check out this guide - http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/GetAr...0c3cf270c1d6a31_21517.xml&pid=113&converted=0

Also is your external drive USB powered or external powered? I know that some of the newer e series linksys routers don't supply enough power to the USB port for the 2.5 inch drives (at least none that I have seen yet... check online thought for additional confirmation)

Hello all, I spent 30 minutes on the phone with support today. When they couldn't answer my question I was abruptly disconnected. Question: How can I verify whether my B575 is running in a single memory mode or dual channel mode?(Memory modes are not discussed in any B575 documentation and no information is available from the BIOS) So here's how our conversation went (cut to the quick): My question:  Is dual channel memory operation supported in the B575?Support response:  Yes.My question:  How can I verify my memory mode of operation (eg, single or dual channel)?Support response:  (After 15 minutes on hold) That is an upgrade question and we do not support upgrades. My response:  The verification of your (installed) memory operation has nothing to do with an upgrade.Support response:  (Placed on hold for another 15 minutes) Then support either hung up or disconnected me. Since I cannot get a straight answer from Lenovo support, I am asking this community's administrators to intercede and get this question answered properly. However, if there is no easy way to verify the B575 memory mode of operation, I am requesting a BIOS upgrade that will reveal such information so it is visible on the BIOS screens. Note: I have already tried CPU-Z and the channel information is "grayed out."  I also tried the new MemTes86 v4.20 and the information provided in the memory ID section is in... I bought Lenovo IdeaPad S206 before circa 1,5 years over Amazon Germany.I am living in Vienna, Austria. The device got broken and it needs repair.I tried to check the warranty over Lenovo web page, however I couldn't find the serial number on the S206.So the first question is -> where can I find the serial number of S206? Furthermore, I got two papers/books when I bought the device - on the first stands "Begrentzte Herstellergarantie von Lenovo" (sthg like "Limited Warranty from Lenovo") and the second one "Notice Regarding Extenden Warranty".On the second paper stands "Your computer is covered by 2-year (extended) warranty..."Therefore, I suppose, since I bought the device appx 1,5 years ago, that the warranty is still usable. Third question - where can I send the device for repair? I am living in Vienna - is there any Lenovo Service Center in Vienna? If yes, can somebody please provide the contact? Thx!If not, where is the nearest lenovo sevice center, and can somebody please send the contact info?Furthermore, is there any Lenovo Service Center in Sarajevo (there is a possibility I could take it for servicing over there as well)?Looking forward to your answers. Best regards,A.

Hi everyone
I have a Toshiba M30 Satellite Pro with a nVidia go5200 graphic card. The nvidia webpage states that this graphic card has DVI support (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/fx_mobile_fb_5200.html) but I have been unable to connect my apple cinema screen to the computer.
The screen is connected through a vga to dvi plug but I don't have a "real" addaptor.

Does anyone have a solution to my problem?

Thanks
Magnus

Answer:Satellite Pro M30: Question abou the DVI port support

Hi

According to the specification this unit has no DVI-D port and there is no possibility to connect it directly to the unit. This unit has Video VGA 15pin port only. Google a little bit around. Maybe you find a ?real? adaptor.

If you find something interesting please let us know. It can be useful for other forum members.

hamlius, dc3, anybody -- do you know if the following scenario is true or not?  Both an OEM Windows 7 owner [license-holder] and a Microsoft Windows 7 owner [license-holder] receive Windows Updates, and both go to various Microsoft web sites to add things to their OS.  Does Microsoft have a shorter time period of support for OEM W7 folks than for Microsoft W7 folks?  Reason for asking:  Over a year and a half ago, when I had OEM W8, when I searched Microsoft web sites, it seemed to me that OEM Windows offers just did not "last" as long as Microsoft Windows offers.

Lets me start off by saying I really hope someone can help me with this. Have been trying so many forums and just can't seem to get the information I need. (and I thought it was simple question )

So here it goes...

I want a cheap laptop to connect to my receiver with an hdmi cable. The receiver has 5.1ch surround sound (so it outputs the audio to the 6 boxes). The video output of the receiver is going to a 1080p projector, also with hdmi.
And if I'm right, this setup should work cause the audio and video can all go through the hdmi cable. And pretty much every new laptop has an hdmi port.

But my question is: how good does the laptop have to be to be able to produce the 1080p signal and the 5.1 surround sound (the output would go to external devices). Can every new bought laptop do that (even the cheaper ones)? Or does a laptop need a bit better specs for that?

For example: alot of the cheaper laptops have an 'Intel Celeron' processor and an 'Intel HD Graphics' videocard. Also the screen of the laptop itself is 720p most of the time. Could a laptop with these specs produce 1080p and 5.1 audio, or are the processor and videocard (or something else) not strong enough for that?

An example of those cheaper laptops I'm talking about: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-S21e-20-80M40003GE.146582.0.html

Yeap, apparently there was an update for trim support with RAID 0, 1, and 10 (not 5).

Now, this is really interesting news to me, as I want to buy a couple of SSDs for my new build, and put in RAID 0.

Now, this update is apparently only for Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Reading around, I can't figure out of this would include the P55 chipset.

Can anyone answer this?

Answer:Trim support and RAID - update question

Any Intel I/O controller hub that supports RAID from ICH7R onwards (so from 945P chipset), including the P55 family (which has an integrated Platform Controller Hub).

For any other thread viewers interested:
Driver here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=&DwnldID=15251
All drives in the array must of course support TRIM

I'm a bit confused with the 'support software' that came with my new laptop. It doesn't seem to be clear what the various programs are for.

As an example, I opened up TEMPRO and it specified a bios update which I duly installed.
Then I looked at SERVICE STATION which also seems to be for updates.
Is there some duplication in all this?

Can someone recommend which of these programs needs to be active?
Is there a brief explanation on what they do and whether there is any 'overhead' in running them?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Answer:Question about Toshiba support software for Satellite C850

I can imagine that you are a bit confused about that.
Both of them are nice applications especially Tempro. More about Tempro and Tempro service you can read on http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/generic/TEMPO_RELEASE_V1

To be honest I don?t use any of them and both are removed from my system. Generally speaking when you get new notebook you will have perfect configured OS and everything will work stabile so some not so important updates will not be needed at all. Both applications run in the background and just slow down the system.

If you have some time check other postings about these applications. You will find a lot of them here on this forum.

So yea they have no clue, so i'll ask you guys. Do you think I'll have any problems using Linux and logging onto the workgroup with samba? They use DHCP anyways so I don't know they could "monitor" us anyways. I was just thinking that they could possibly have some enterprise virus software like Sophos that can tell which clients have the virus checker or not. Not too mention not every node on the network will be a windows/mac device. Think i'll be able to use it without problems?

Answer:my universities tech support is dumb... + networking question

Are they running another client like CCAA (cisco clean access agent) to auth your computer? I know our college does that, and linux/mac computers dont need AV software.

With Sophos (which we also run and let students have for free) the only monitoring we do is with the staff computers. Student machines, the cisco agent does certain checks (windows updates, makes sure the anti virus service is running (if its mcafee, norton, sophos, etc) and is up to date (using reg entries). Again, macs and linux boxes are ignored for those checks.

They could be doing something like that.

Ive also found that when talking to tech support (oh yeah, I work the tech support at the college here....decent size backend of people) and never mention which distro you are running. Just say Linux

So far in my looong computer professional life, I've managed to avoid having to get too deep into the virus (etc) world. Maybe just luck. Well, that ended about two weeks ago. With the help of this site, I was able to finally cure (I hope) the infected system. The experience here was mostly good, but I have a few questions in the spirit of perhaps making things better, especially for those of us who don't live in the world of infection & cure.

- why ask users to post their logs right into the message body? this clutters up the messages and makes it hard to find responses as many logs are quite long. why not always ask for logs to be attached?

- why the substantial variety of suggested system log & fix tools? is this just the individual preference of the person offering to help? hijackThis is sometimes suggested, other times dds, sometimes adAware, sometimes ComboFix, and on and on and on. Especially in the beginning stages of investigation why so many choices? I would think one protocol would do for most.

- why so many scan programs? is it really necessary, as some posts have suggested, to run 5 or more scan programs? is this just superstition? why can't one just do it all?

- as many of the more insidious problems seem to be addressed with ComboFix, why not just suggest that as a first step? and why the caution regarding running comboFix? if it can really mess things up, then what sort of problems can it cause? if the caution is not based on anything real, then it... Hello Ron.why ask users to post their logs right into the message body? this clutters up the messages and makes it hard to find responses as many logs are quite long. why not always ask for logs to be attached? We want all the content to be visible for future reference. Good evening.
I've a question for the users who upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and maintained the installed software:
1) Was the transition smooth? Were there any failures during the upgrade process?
2) Regarding software compatibility, is the software that was installed before the upgrade process running correctly? Or is there any software that is crashing because the lack of compatibility, wrong path, etc? If you've experienced crashes, please tell which software did crash.
3) Drivers: Was there any broken driver support after the upgrade?
4) Gaming: For those who upgraded and had Steam and games installed BEFORE the upgrade process, after the upgrade, can these games be played correctly, or were/are there any problems launching/playing them (blue screens, crashes and so on)? If so, which games are not workign correctly after the upgrade?
5) Gaming again: Was there any performance loss or gain after the upgrade? Have demanding games like GTA V suffered any performance hit, like FPS losses, stuttering and so on? Is the SLI working correctly, or has the SLI support been broken for some games? If so, which ones?
Regards.

Answer:Question to users who upgraded to Windows 10 (software support after installation).

I just upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10, I loved the layout and it was smooth but steam client was not working so I spent over 10 hours trying different things and nope, so I called Microsoft and they could not help said if it did not work then it was not compatible steam does not have any version yet and has not got back to me about fixing it. I tried every thing and no luck, I like windows 10 but no steam is insane so I reverted to windows 7 and it worked again sad day :(

Hi all, Ive followed the instructions given to me by Tech support and gone to the link listed under my Service Tag where there is the option to download my Windows 8.1 ISO image along with instructions which Ive printed off.
I will be installing from a USB flash drive and the instructions to create the bootable USB installation media are straight forward and easy to follow using Diskpart. Then simply Mount the image and copy all files over onto the USB flash drive.
Im a little confused though when reading the instructions under How to Reinstall Windows 8.1. there are two options PCs with BIOS boot mode and PCs with UEFI boot mode. I purchased my Inspiron laptop late 2015 so it has UEFI boot mode with Secure Boot. Under the UEFI boot instructions it talks about disabling Secure Boot and for USB installation media set Boot order to Internal ODD device. I don't understand..a USB flash drive isnt an Internal ODD device as far as im aware.
So without doing anything to System Setup Ive tried inserting a flash drive, tapping F12. It says UEFI boot mode and Secure Boot is enabled and the flash drive is listed second one down underneath my Toshiba hard disc. It seems to me that I have to follow the instructions for PCs with BIOS boot mode even though my system is UEFI boot mode!! Am I missing something here?

Hello

I have Toshiba Satellite L755-161 and Windows 7 32bit installed (for quite some time) - when checking My Computer properties I can see that from 8GB of RAM only 2.74GB are usable.

Is this a normal value for usable memory?
Would this change depending on the additional software installed or would this only depend on hardware?
Would this value change (hopefully increase) if I reinstall my Windows 7?

Second thing:
Would it be possible/wise to upgrade to Windows 10?
Are all necessary drivers for Windows 10 released and where can they be safely downloaded?

Thanx in advance.

Hi,

What I'm trying to do is easy enough in thought, and I'm pretty sure I've seen this in a corporate setting but anyways what I'm looking to do is..

I run a business business, and I have one customer support employee. She answers the customer support e-mails that come to her via Outlook 2007 on her computer that we have setup for a few different e-mail accounts - all of which she answers.

I am part owner of the company, and for the first time in a while; I would like to take a more hands-on approach in my business moving forward.

In doing so, I would like to be able to view - both the e-mails in from the customers, and the e-mails that she sends out. I would also like to answer e-mails myself, and for her to be able to view the e-mails that I had sent out - so she can get a good idea of what to send if she is asked that question in the future.
I was hoping for this to be some type of add-on to Outlook that I could easily download or pay a small fee for - but I'm up for anything that would do what I stated above.

Please let me know if there's anything out there like this, any response is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Question About Outlook Admin Account - Trying to View Employee's Cust. Support E-mail

Hi there, welcome to the board!

Depends on what kind of mail account you have. If you have POP or IMAP, you could setup the account on both machines, but that will only ensure you both receive the same email. For ensuring you send to each other, assuming you have the same account, you could bcc yourself to ensure you both get emails. Depending on how many emails you send, you could potentially overload your servers number of requests (emails) per day (generally what I've seen is set at 250).

Another option would be to look at Office 365 for your business. Not only would this give you an Office install on up to 5 machines, but it would give you an Exchange email address and a company Sharepoint site. It's a subscription-based service, and if you price it out it's actually pretty cheap. They start as low as $4/month and go up from there. For more info take a look here:

Summary:

I am putting this in the general forum section, and please bear with me. I had posted earlier a thread about my Asus Ultrabook backlit keyboard not illuminated. Thank you all that have responded to that post, but nothing worked. I ended up sending in my Asus for RMA and warranty repairs.

Here is where the fun starts. I first made my case with Asus and they informed me that my Serial Number was invalid. I told them that it is wrong as I bought the Laptop from MemoryLabs.com, which is a Certified Asus Re-seller. It even posts their name on their website in "Where to Buy Asus".

Please do not take this as racist or anything derogative, but the Asus support staff are all located in India, and there is no way to talk to a person in America. The repair facility is also contracted out to a company called BizCom in Milpitas, California. Now, the men and women who work at the support center in India do their best, but to my understanding, they are a separate company working to just take calls. Same with the BizCom company, which they are great, but again contracted so there is nobody who works for Asus or knows Asus's RMA system.

My laptop has been sitting at the repair center with no updates from Asus. When I contact the support center directly, they said the Serial Number was Invalid and that they had to talk to Asus about the warranty service. I though Asus already fixed this when I sent them my Invoice of the Laptop and that it was a certified Reseller?

Answer:Asus UX51VZ-IS71T: Question on Asus Support?

I had correspondence with ASUS via e-mail. It was a while ago now, I think it was a link on their web site. It was a waist of time really. I wasn't impressed. Replies took forever and the answers seemed to be scripted responses. I eventually just gave up asking any more questions. My issue was with creating recovery media. At that time there was no way of creating a recovery disk set in Windows 8.0. The utility I was referred to only worked in Windows 7. It became a non issue when I put an SSD in my laptop and did a clean install of 8.0.

Most of those contracted out call centers go by a flow chart. Ask this question, if the answer is yes, take this branch, if its no, take this other branch. The person asking you the questions may have no technical background at all. As soon as you say I don't know, your basically screwed. Assuming you can actually understand what they are saying. I'm not racist, but I don't think its unreasonable to be able to talk to somebody that is fluent in my native language. It seems to be the luck of the draw sometimes. I've had some that I could understand easily, and some that were almost impossible to understand.

I bought TPS230U in may2013, and one monthe ago, the laptop just turned off by itself and wont turn on anymore. I had tried troubleshoop refresh and resetting options but it doesnt work.
My warranty certificate is still valid for itnernational support (now I live in  Brazil), so that, I called Brazil´s support (My laptop ID is: Type 3347 2GU S/N xxxxxxx 13/02.
At the first time I contacted by phone, the attendant asked me to (once again) turn off the laptop  and call back again. Well, I did it, adn (of course) it didnt work. So I called once again. The second the new clerk said I should buy a cd or dvd ( which could not be via USB stick ) , download from other computer and copy  an image file  that lenovo would understand the problem . I explained that I had not cd to record that moment. But he was very rude, and told me that it the  support goes to my house and concludes that there is a software problem and not hardwa, I was supposed to pay for the visit. So, I went to a store and bought a recordable CD , recorded the ISO file and got home to insert it into the laptop and....for my surprise,  my laptop doenst have any  entry for CD ! I feel that lenovo has been really disrespectfull with me and all I want is to have a simple support to my laptop, but I still couldnt have. Pleaase let me know how can I solve this problem before my waranty term expires!!!

Answer:Dell Warranty is reflecting incorrect data as per technical support and support manager

I keep receiving calls from fake MICROSOFT Tech support with various telephone numbers. Strange, they do not show up in my phone on line logs. They wanted me to go to FASTSUPPORT\763721586 ( do not use  these numbers). It is a company  called FASTSUPPORT.com. they also give you a complaint department where you can enter the number that you feel is causing you problems, the number of the LOGMEINRESCUE type remote access code. of course it is clear to them that you are suspicious and they will get rid of the  phone operator who didn't succeed. So do not bother to leave any complaint.

I have a T430s laptop and it is less than 6 months old. It starting getting blue screens within a month of purchasing it. Technical support has been helpless in trying to fix the laptop. First, tech support told me to turn update my computer daily. Then another tech support employee told me to turn OFF my auto updates. This did nothing and over a few weeks the blue screens progressively got worse. Next, tech support told me to run a diagnostic on my computer which turned up nothing. Then, they tried giving me recovery discs and a new hard drive. After that failed they took it in to replace the system board which made the blue screens worse. Then they sent me MORE recovery CDs to try to fix the problem and that also made the blue screens worse. I called tech support after this and they said they would send in a request for a replacement laptop. I was told I would hear from someone in a couple days. FIVE days later I got a called from someone asking if I wanted a replacement and I said yes. Then I was told I had to wait two more business days to get contacted about it. Another 3-4 business days later, someone called me to tell me that they would NOT be replacing the laptop despite the fact tech support could not fix the laptop. After calling tech support once again, I was told that they wanted me to send in my laptop again for up to 7 business days! This is completely unacceptable. I have had problems with this laptop almost the entire time I have owned it and no one knows... Read more

I have just sent a thinkpad back for repair for the first time in over 20 years of owning  Thinkpad.  I have had 8 thinkpad  series laptops in my time as well as a few desktops and now lenovo phones. I am absolutely horrified with the diabolical Thinkpad support. This is meant to be business level support. I feel like I am phoning up Curry's.  Laptop sent back with hard disk in it and I am being told now that it "turned up without a hard disk in it". Now undercurrent of me lying. Original problem had not been assessed and I still don't have my laptop back after 3 weeks. Customer service agents just tell you anything they want to get you off the phone. I suppose all things come to an end but my loyalty to the Thinkpad brand is probably over now.  I am sure I am not the first. Has anyone else come across this?

Answer:Terrible Thinkpad Support Premium Prices for Sub-Standard Support. Business users avoid now.

Oh, yes. I'm going through something similar over the last few weeks. Here is my thread on it.Been updating it every week. All I ever get is blown off no matter who I talk to. Good luck getting your situation resolved. I'm guessing it was sent to their depot in Tennessee?

We are Dell resellers and had placed an order for 43 Laptops - Dell Latitude 3560 with Dell on 13th June, 2016. We delivered them to our customer on Friday 17th June, 2016. On Monday 20th June we discovered that all the Laptops are faulty and are not functioning properly. They have not been able to use a single system due to touchpad issues in the entire lot
We have made innumerable calls Dell to resolve the problem, but the team is unable to identify and rectify the problem.
We have spoken to our partner account manager, regional account manager, Service Specialist and Escalation Team, requesting them to provide us with a solution at the earliest as their work is getting hampered. Our customer has to deploy the same by 1st July however they do not have any Dell Laptops functioning correctly.
How do we escalate this to the Dell management and get a replacement ASAP
Regards

Hello there, I'm interested in finding out more about the X220 - In particular the actual bandwidth available to the i7 Version of the X220 with it's USB 3 port. I'd like to be able to use the Black Magic Design Intensity Shuttle with this laptop, however it requires a Super Speed USB 3.0 Port. It's common for laptops to only use a single PCIe lane interconnect, giving the USB3 Port only 2.5gbps of available bandwidth. This won't be enough to allow that capture card to work  A similar situation also exists for the Expresscard slot - To be able to support Expresscard v2.0, It needs to provide 5gbps (2x PCIe v1 lanes). If it does this, It's possible I can buy an USB 3 Expresscard which will have enough bandwidth to use the card. In short I would like to know if the super speed USB 3 port can actually function at the intended speed, and is not crippled to half rate.

I paid for 3 years of support and accidental damage in home support. Together, it cost around $400 on my new XPS laptop. Afew months after I bought XPS 15 9560, I pulled out the charging cord, and a round piece of plastic that was inside the port came out too.
I called technical support at 5 pm EST, and received someone in Southern India. I gave them my information, and they confirmed that I had service. They then fought with me for 15 minutes, telling me I could NOT have any in home service. The representative, who kept calling me by my first name (no respect)  said I had to send my laptop to a depot in Texas for them to identify the issue. Finally, after I insisted, the representative, S. Sirya Kiran, FINALLY allowed me to get in home support IF I sent him photos of the damage. I did. Finally, I received an email telling me to select a date for service, which I did, 12/18/17 between 9 am and 1:00 pm .
I took time off and waited. No one came by 11:30, or called. So I contacted World Wide Tech Services. They then told me they didn't have enough techs to handle my area, so they were NOT coming. I asked why no one gave me the courtesy of a phone call and they had no answer. They said a new company, Unisys, would contact me. (I doubt they ever will.)
Is this what Dell gives people for their money as far as support and accidental damage in home service for $400? This is an outrage.

Someone told me in another thread, and I also read here, that

All Wireless N routers support dual-band 802.11nClick to expand...

implying that any wireless N router can use the 5 GHz band as well as the 2.4 GHz band. Isn't that the implication?

Then why is it that when I browse routers, only some of them list both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency, while others list only 2.4 in the specs? I want to switch my network over to 5 GHz in order to get away from all the interference I'm getting, as discussed in this thread.

So what's the real answer? Will any cheap "wireless N" router be able to do 5 GHz, (e.g. this one?) or do I need a more expensive dual band one?

Answer:Confused about router support for 5 GHz band. All wireless N routers support it??

No. The 802.11n standard supports 5GHz, but does not require it. Now if a device was 802.11ac, it will have a 5GHz radio since that standard only works on that freq.

Started about a month ago - pops up over and over and over and over - about every five minutes or less.  I've got a Dell Studio XPS with Windows 7 Professional.  Another forum said to just uninstall Dell Support Center (Support Center Software) - but when I try to uninstall it - THE SAME STUPID WINDOW POPS UP ASKING ME TO INSERT THE SOFTWARE.  I tried doing a Browse and it's looking for DSC20.msi.  I haven't managed to find it yet.  I have at least found \Program Files(x86)\Dell Support Center but there's so many sub-directories...
I shouldn't have to be jumping through so many hoops just to uninstall a program.  This is driving me crazy and I haven't found an answer online yet.

So I am sitting here on my MacBook Pro which in my opinion does not have any wireless issues whatsoever, it works. I still own this ThinkPad with a garbage wireless card, and I feasted my eyes on an Intel 7260 but lo and behold, it isn't on the whitelist! Scouring eBay and Amazon I did find a FRU, but would the number of that FRU be the same on the Hardware list? Lets see, well I cannot even find it. All I get are Page Not Found errors which to me is a hilarious joke of Lenovo's support. What does this mean for me? Is my X230 at a very very unnecessary end of life? Should I like, fork out £1400 for an "upgraded" model that probably won't fix most of my problems? My problems is money and saving money. Should i now look elsewhere? No, because I'd rather keep my money to actually FIX my current laptop's problems (the N2200 is a garbage card and would like to replace it with something that's up to date to todays technology but that isn't happening by the sounds of it) I am frustrated with my current laptop's problems and it's having a large effect on my studies. And possibly you can also lose customers by inadequate non-existent support and failure to give us the freedom to actually let us upgrade for those who do. For those who don't, more like.

I have a Thinkpad T450s and it is just over a year old. It still has 3 more years of warranty. Edit: Warranty type: TPJ (This product has a four year limited warranty which includes a warranty upgrade. This product is entitled to parts and labor and is entitled to Depot service).Recently the lenovo solution center gave an critical error for the HDD (Read test failure) and I submitted an online request reporting it. Without even sending me an email or contacting me, they sent me a new part and gave me zero information about it. Apparently every other person can replace a HDD now!  I have created 3 more cases calling their tech support to send the laptop for a depo repair. Everytime the request is rejected 'at the vendor' according to the customer care. Neither the customer care people or tech support can tell me why. Every time they create a new case, tell me I will receive a depo bag nect day, and I dont receive anything, have to call depo customer care and on hold for minimum 40 minutes, only to hear that the case has been rejected they dont know why.One tech support told me now I have to send the new part back before creating a new case, otherwise it will be rejected again. but he does not know how I can send the new part back. The return label sent to me was for the faulty HDD.Can anyone help? What is the point of paying for warranty if I receive this type of service?

Answer:HORRIBLE tech support and warranty support
