CD\DVD CD-ROM Optical drive installed as disk drive 01 NOT initialized

Question: CD\DVD CD-ROM Optical drive installed as disk drive 01 NOT initialized

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A moot point now. Tried to update BIOS -- MB died and the unit now has the very common 7-Beep error code when trying to boot.

I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

This drive was originally a Maxtor back-up drive that my brother in law could never get to accomplish a successful back-up routine when running on his XP desktop system or his new Vista laptop. He gave it to me and I installed upgraded software and tried it on my Vista x64 system and again recieved "back-up failed" error messages. I decided to delete all contents on the drive and use it as a basic external storage drive. My problem is now my system see's it as "Drive not yet initialized". How do I initialize this drive? It's a Maxtor One Touch III, 200 Gb.

Answer:Disk not initialized when trying to format external USB drive

Do it thru Disk Management...right click My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.

I ran BIOS diagnostics on a Dell OptiPlex 3010 yesterday and received an error code (2000-0142) - short self test unsuccessful. I pulled the drive and swapped a new SATA drive to get the user back up and running quickly. I'm trying to connect the drive with the error to my laptop using a StarTech USB 2.0 to IDE SATA Adapter. When I open Disk Management I see Disk 0 (my laptop drive) and Disk 1 (the connected drive). It says Unknown / Not Initialized. When I right click and try to initialize it says "The device is not ready." I've tried the more actions > refresh / rescan. Now when I right click the option to Initialize Disk is grayed out and I can only see Offline and Properties.

I browsed through a thread from about 2 years ago and couldn't find a helpful solution.

The drive: Western Digital 250GB SATA / 16MB Cache - WD2500AAKX

Answer:Disk Management - Unknown / Not Initialized Drive

Have you attempted to run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard diagnostic software? It has a short test and an extended test.

Are you trying to recover anything from this drive? Or just trying to find out if it's broken?

Hey, While playing CDs (legally bought) in disk drive, it causes crackling in sound. That does not happen with every CD I have, so far it happens with 4 CDs, but that's still problem, because songs crackle even after copying them from the CD. I have streamed those songs, people have confirmed that crackling really is happening. I have tested different media players, I have played those CDs on DVD-player and in another disk drive (another computer), no problems. As well, I have changed frequenzy settings, etc. no help. The crackling always starts from the 1st song of the CD and it slowly disappears when we are going on from track to track, so usually the last song on the CD does not crackle, but usually at least 4 first tracks of the CD do crackle. I did not nuy my computer from Acer Shop, and Live Chat page says that "Our records indicate the serial number you have entered is no longer eligible for warranty support."nor SNID work. I don't think that my computer is warranty eglible anymore (however, my computer isn't even 1 year old yet), as I opened it already, in hope that I can change my disk drive, but it seems like I can't do it. One option is to put in a good external DVD player using USB port. The other option is to put and interal DVD player in an external enclosure and use the second SATA port to run it. You may need to run a power extension also.

Hello,I've recently purchased the IdeaPad 320-15ABR. I would prefer an internal Optical Disk Drive, but is proving difficult to work out which one i require / best fit to purchase. Is anyone able to advise on the best internal DVD ROM / RW drive and where to purchase? Would prefer to get an internal rather an external, as it's less to lug about.I've looked in many places but can't work out what is suitable and what is not. I thought it would be easy to source, but was wrong. Help / advice much appreciated. Thanks. First Time Lenovo user, UK based.

the first time I tried it works, but something error occured, and now I can't using that method..
when I tried to using that, just show " cann't open volume for direct access"

my hard disk didn't appear on my computer list, but I can reject it.

and anyway I have tried to using minitool partition wizard, but you all can see that my hdd didn't appear with the volume.. just show up disk 2 with 0.00 GB

Sorry to say your WD Elements is dead and you have tried everything. There is nothing left for me to do, honestly. I would have done the same thing before declaring it dead.. No DIY data recovery is possible. The only option open to you is to entrust it to Western Digital Data Recovery partners in your region. Check with them whether there is any hope of recovering data in good shape.Telephonic consultation is free.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

I have an E5 573G which originally has an open slot for an optical drive or caddy.I bought the correct optical drive and bezel and I installed it. The drive opens and I can hear it start to run but no prompts pop up, and the computer doesn't seem to be registering anything. Am I missing some software or did I do something wrong?

"Step 1: Type Device Manager in Windows searchStep 2: once there locate your driver. Mine was called "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Double-click it to show it's contents and there should be another device under it. Mine had an question mark but in some cases it might have an exclamation point next to the name. Mine was called "AOPEN DUW1608/ARR" but if your's is different, it's okay. Step 3: Double-click the newly revealed hardward "AOPEN DUW1608/ARR" and it's own dialog box will appear. Go to the "Driver" tab and select "Update Driver..." from the buttons below. Step 4: Now, select "Install from a list or specific location" and click Next. In the next box select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and again, click next. A different box will show with compatible hardware for your driver. I selected from the bottom believing it was the most recent, it was called "CD-ROM Drive [IMAPI settings 1,5]." It was a mistake, but I see no downside right now as I don't need the space and it looks like it would run cooler. I have only 2 screws securing it as access to the other 2 seems problematic as it would be in the proper bay below HD 1.
Initially not recognized but after seeing it as available in pre-boot, and re-booting it appeared in Disk Management, ready for the formatting process. 2T.
Thank you.

Answer:XPs 8700 installed 2nd hard drive in optical bay - any problem with that?

I would not ship the system with the drive there with only two screws, but it wouldn't bother me at all.
On the 8700s we use with gaming cards, the HDD cage has been removed so there is only room for one drive in the HD2 slot, and the SSD is parked in the optical bay. Again I wouldn't ship it like this but it is fine for me.

Answer:How to move the original system to the newly installed SSD without a optical drive?

Hey Skywalkerlin,

You can back up image on external drive that connects to USB which will allow you to do a system restore to your new SSD. This would require you set up a few things in BIOS, the other options are all USB solutions like a Flash drive.

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Your computer randomly trying to access removable media sounds like malware trying to copy itself to a writable DVD.

Things you can try:

Perform a malware check (e. g. with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware )
Boot on safe mode and check if issue persist.

Does anyopne know if it's possible to buy an adaptor to fit a 3.5" hard drive into an optical drive bay in my PC tower case?I want to add a shiny new 1TB drive to fill up with video but the two hard drive bays are already occupied. I'd rather not take one of them out and I'd prefer the new drive be mounted internally, rather than attached via USB. I'm not after a removable caddy or anything like that, just something that will allow me to securely fit the drive. There's no problem with having enough SATA sockets in the motherboard or power connectors, it's just the mounting problem. Any thoughts?PaulC

I just got a new Celestron Handheld Digital Microscope Pro whichwill connect to my compute via USB. It is just a closeup camera withthe output on my computer monitor controlled by Windows. It camewith a software disk labled Celestron Micro Capture Pro V 1.0. Thedisk also has the user manual. The label on the disk explicitly listsWindows 7 as supported. The copyright date is 2013. It looks just like any other disk: Silvery with rainbows. All other diskstake a long time (15 seconds or so) for the drive to start spinning(why so long??) and then a window pops up asking me what I wantto do, depending on the file types it sees on the disk. With this disk, nothing at all happens. When I open Computer and try to open the drive, the green progressbar crawls along the top of the window. Eventually Windows Explorerlocks up. The mechanical button on the drive will not open the drivedoor. I had to restart Windows Explorer. What is happening (or NOT happening) that the drive never spins up? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

You have tested optical disc drive in other computer?
Anyway, if the ODD is not recognized in BIOS I?m afraid ODD controller is defective. It is mainboard issue so there is no some kind of easy solution.
I don't think you can do much about that except to exchange the mainboard.

I am using Windows 7, Enterprise, 32-bit OS. It's Dell E5400 notebook. My machine for sometime was a part of a domain. Now I have changed from Domain to Work group. I don't know what went wrong, but I cannot access neither optical drive nor pen drive at usb.

I went for take ownership at security tab at their properties. But there was not security tab there. I formatted my pen drive with NTFS file system and found security tab. But no use. I cannot take ownership. I am getting these errors : “an error occurred while applying security information to: :F" and “access is denied”

I went in safe mode. Everything was accessible there. From safe mode, I tried to give permission to "administrators" including my user account, but same error occurred.

Please help me.

Yesterday when I removed CD from my Thinkpad T400 optical disk drive, I guess I pulled it out a bit too harshly. The result was that the CD came out along with that little black circular plastic thing (don't know what is called) stuck in the middle of CD circular hole. I pushed that piece out of the CD and put it back in the center of the optical disk drive.  Now when I put a new CD in the drive I hear some kind of strange noise, sounds like it is wobbling. The only choice is to eject the CD without getting access to the files.  Is there an easy way to set that little plastic circular guy back to its place to stay permanently? Should I use glue or something to make sure it is sticking (just kidding!) If not, any suggestions as where should I take my laptop to be fixed? I live in Boston area. I am out of luck with laptop warranty as it expired a couple of months ago.

Answer:Hardware Problem with Optical Disk Drive -- T400

not really. You probably need to consider getting a new drive or use an external portable drive instead.

Although win7 does not take too much time to boot on my t410 I have become spoiled by an SSD boot. So1. can I boot from an SSD in the ultrabay?2. can I put the optical drive now in the Ultrabay into an external HD case and have it function properly?Thank you

Answer:SSD for untrabay optical disk to external drive case?

1) Don't know honestly. Check your BIOS (but why would you want to put it there? HDD (so SSD) goes into normal place, extra HDD goes into ultrabay.)2) There is nothing like "external HD case" which would run your ultra-bay optical drive. You can only use an external USB device this way, or a dock which gives you an option to add more ultra-bay devices.

Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Well until the other day the CD-RW/DVD Drive in my Toshiba P20 laptop was working fine. Now however it isnt. Whenever I insert a disk into the drive the mouse turns into a spinning CD to show that it is reading the disk, however it finds no content on whatever disk I insert and it also says there is no disk inserted.

What should I do?

Answer:Satellite P20 - Optical Drive doesn’t read the disk properly

Try to reinstall the driver for the CD/DVD drive. It has maybe been corrupted by something.

A couple weeks ago I purchased a new Dell Inspiron PC (tower) 5675. There is a CD/DVD burner with the computer, however, I want and need a second burner. Built into the front panel of the case is a spring loaded door for the second burner to be installed (why else would there be a second door?), however that part is not available, retail. So, I spend an hour and a half on the chat line with a gentleman from India (I think), and he finally passes me off to the next guy who finally gets my CD/DVD burner on order, with the stipulation that it is a Dell refurbished unit. After several attempts I finally get someone who assures me that the proper part is on order. Yesterday my part arrives. There is no way that this burner is meant for the 5675. Today I spent the entire afternoon talking with half a dozen different people from several different departments just to have the final guy tell me there is no such accessory. It looks like it's for a lap top. I must insert here that I very politely asked, twice, if there was someone available that I could talk to and understand. I was polite! The last gentleman I spoke with said "I do speak English" and he hung up. So,. anyone from Dell, what's the next step?

Answer:Inspiron 5675, adding standard optical disk drive

The 5.25" drive bay you're  referring to will take a standard, 5.25" SATA drive.  That and a SATA  cable are all you should need -- as long as the power supply has a free SATA power connector on it.

I have a SATA DVD/CD optical drive that will not open to remove a boot capable disk, (CD or DVD, such as a XP or Vista O/S disk or a partition tool), when re-booting from that disk so that it is before loading any operating system. Once booted into a O/S then it opens fine to remove a CD or DVD disk. This is a Intel Core 2 Dual ASUS motherboard 1 year old desktop type computer which has both the hard drive and optical drives as SATA. So will this issue be resolved if I add in a 2nd optical drive which is standard PATA IDE type connection ?

I am using an HP Pavillion DV9700 laptop
BIOS F.2C
AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60 2.00 GHz
2 GB on board
Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit OS, all updates installed

Somewhere, after a Win7 update many months ago, the problem started. I had no problems before. It started with the OS not recognizing the optical disk drive that came installed with the laptop. The computer's set-up BIOS recognizes the drive as being there. The optical drive does not show in Device Manager.

I tried changing out the disk drive, it did not help. Soon, Win7 would occasionally lock up at the boot screen, but work fine on a cold reboot following a lock-up. But then the lock-ups became permanent and cyclical. No amount of reboots would help.

I went to do a clean install using an external USB optical drive and accidentally discovered it cured the problem! The laptop will not lock up if the external USB optical drive is hooked up and turned on when starting the computer.

I tried a clean install of the operating system. I tried updating the drivers. Nothing helped.

Win7 always recognizes I had problems booting and sends the error messages to Microsoft.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Win7 Locks Up on Boot -- Related to CD-DVD Optical Disk Drive

If you remove the optical drive and leave it out, does the lock up on boot go away?

Does it lock up when Windows starts to load?
I assume it does not lock up on system boot because it is recognized in the BIOS.

Hi all,

Whenever I click on my internal optical drive, I get a message that states "Please insert a disk in drive D".

Windows recognizes the drive when I go into properties, and the troubleshooter states that the device is working properly. I've also tried every type of media imaginable from DVDs to CD-Rs to no avail. Also, I do have an external USB drive that works fine.

I've even tried installing another verified drive and have the same problem. Also, I've tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting to allow windows to re-install the driver. When I reboot, windows recognizes the new drive (name and all) and installs the driver, however I still can't open a CD or DVD of any type.

System details...

Windows XP Home with SP2
FIC Ice Cube SFF with 3.0GHz P4E, 1GB RAM
Dual Samsung SN-324F CD-RW/DVD-ROM Slim drives

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone might be able to provide.

Hi guys, i wonder if you can offer any ideas here. I have a brand new T420s which came with an optical slot place holder piece of plastic. I removed this and popped in a 'Lenovo DVD Multi IV DVD Multi Recorder CD-RW' P/N 45N7453. It clicked into place fine, but the power light on it does not come on and the eject button does not work. This same drive works fine in 2 other T420s laptops my colleagues have, so the drive is ok. I tried disabling the optical drive in the bios, rebooting, re-enabling, rebooting but nothing. Is there anything else i can try or would you say its a board issue and i'm stuck with it ?

Good morning,

A little background; I picked up this laptop on behalf of my manager at work for her son's birthday (tomorrow), and offered to set it up for her. Unfortunately, the eject button on the DVD drive (and right click>eject in My Computer) flashes the light and I can hear the spring trigger, but doesn't actually eject the drive.

However, it does clear the disk from memory in My Computer (changes from Office 2013 to DVD drive). I know this because the paperclip trick works; I am able to insert a paperclip into the manual release slot. Following that, I have proven that it can read disks, it simply can't eject them.

Here are the things I have tried from various support articles around the web:
-Tried to eject during boot
-Uninstalled CD/DVD driver, auto-reinstall at boot
-Removed all disk related software
-Searched high and low for an updated DVD driver without success.

I've come to the conclusion that the issue is hardware related rather than anything to do with the software, as everything is recognised just fine, it's simply the eject button(s) that fail to work as intended.

Now, bearing in mind that this kid's birthday is tomorrow, is there anything I can do that doesn't involve sending the machine off for repair?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Re: Satellite C50D-A-13N - Optical Disk Drive Eject button malfunction

Hi

As i understood the issue; the Eject button does not work properly but you can ejects the disk inserting the paper clip into the small hole near the eject button.
Is this correct?

Since there is no special software which controls the eject button, the issue looks like to be hardware related problem and I think the only option to fix this issue is the CD/DVD drive replacement.

I recently had a rootkit that corrupted my hard drive (I accidentally opened spam in my e-mail account) so I had to get a new one installed. After I got the brand new hard drive and reinstalled everything, my computer started running SLOWLY.

I reinstalled Miro w/ Thepiratebay.org and noticed that the computer was slow after that, even when those programs weren't open. So I uninstalled everything possible that I didn't need, including Miro/Thepiratebay with a program called Revo Uninstaller. I cleaned the disc space, defragmented, etc. (I read the BP's tutorial and followed all of those instructions in re having a slow computer.)

I'm not sure if this matters, but I noticed that I have 219GB capacity, with 215 GB free (71% free space.) I have no idea how 29GB are being used up. I don't have any pictures, videos or music downloaded, although some may be hidden and I just can't find them. With my old disk drive, I always had 89%+ free space. I also noticed that I no longer have a D: drive since the tech installed the new disk drive. Not sure if that matters either. I'm not very knowledgeable with computers, just enough to screw something up.

I have Windows XP, Service Pack 3 with Vipre Internet Security, Malwarebytes Pro (paid edition) and I'm using Mozilla Firefox. I have some documents in word. That's it.

Now the CPU is almost constantly spiking to 100%. Sometimes the computer freezes and I have to manually turn it off and ... Read more

In my never ending quest to recover data from my now defunct external hard drive I've attempted to install a new drive of the same make and size. (western digital wd2000) However, instead of buying an external I purchased an internal. However, the circuit board for the external plugs into the new drive and seems to be working.

Windows explorer doesn't see it. Re-booting and it's still invisible.

Device manager does see it. When I select the volume tab and populate I see the "drive not initialized" message. All other tabs and messages indicate it's there and working.

Where do I go from here???

ps. My ultimate goal is to replace the disc's from the broken external with this new internal. Frankly, I may have bitten off more than I should be chewing but life is an adventure and this may just be one of those.......

You need to go into the bios and change the boot order so the hd is the first boot device. Also, before you do that replace the battery on the motherboard.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I have an Alienware Aurora R6 and am frustratingly trying to upgrade the optical drive to one that can read Blu-rays. Does anyone know what drive size specs I should be looking for? It's a low profile drive that is even smaller than a standard laptop optical drive. I tried posting this to an existing Aurora R6 article (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-upgrade-alienware-aurora-r5-and-r6), but my reputation here isn't high enough to post to older articles. Thanks any help.
Background in case anyone's interested: When purchasing this computer the only spec*they showed was that it was a 5.25" drive. Assuming it would be a full sized 5.25", I ordered the system with the least expensive DVD option, meaning to switch it out with the Blu-ray drive in my old system. This, of course, didn't work, so eventually I ordered a low profile Blu-ray drive meant for laptops. The slot in the case is too small even for this drive. What grinds my gears about this is that it's obvious that the internal bay (silver*metal part) is big enough for the laptop drive. It's the outer case (black metal part) and front bezel that are the obstructions.

You will probably need some sort of Tray and it's likely to be smaller than the Standard Hard Drive

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

I was given a pc (asus K8N-E) the problem is that although it powers up, mobo light works cpu fan spins and system fan spins front panel lights work, the hard drive and optical drive wont power up unless i disconnect the IDE cables, when disconnected the hard drive spins and the light on and drawer on the optical drive work. its as if the IDE is somehow disabled, i have tried different cables but to no avail any help appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

I recently had a horrible virus on my computer to the point where I reformatted and reinstalled xp pro. When I did this I re arranged my harddrives (I have 3) so that the C drive was a 10gb just for the os and other important programs. Originally the C drive was about a 40 gb seagate barracuda 7200 but i moved that and made it into a slave. I did not reformat it when I did the switch up so when I reinstalled xp pro the virus was still in the drive. xp installed fine with no noticeable ill effects from the drive with the virus but when I went to reformat the virus drive it popped up an "error failed to reformat. please try again" or something like that right as it finished. Then something came up and ask me to restart so I did and when I got back on the drive was practically nonexistant. No space was read on it and the hardware name in the drive properties was a few letters and some spaces where letters should have been. I figured a wire may have come loose so I turned the computer off and made sure the wires were in. Then when I turned my computer back on the drive wasn't even showing on My Computer, only my C and E drives. I looked in the hardware properties and it showed that it recognized my second drive because it was still there and had the proper name this time. I made sure it was enabled but that did nothing so i went into the disk managment and an Initalize and Convert Disk Wizard popped up for the second drive. I ran the wizard but it did not do what i... Any help is appreciated.

Hey everyone. So I had a server that stopped working, so I removed the hard drives and am trying to access them from a different computer but disk management wants to initialize them...which will erase my data. How can I recover it?

I just bought a new hard drive(WDC WD2500JB-REA0) and when I go into Disk Management thats what it says and I have no idea what it means. I got the hard drive to work fine on my other computer and its not working on this one. On this computer I have an ASUS A8V-Deluxe motherboard with the BIOS fully updated. When I try to initialize it nothing happens.

My IDE setup reads as follows:

Primary Master: Quantum FireballP AS40.0
Primary Slave: WDC WD2500JB-REA0
Secondary Master: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B
Secondary Slave: Quantum Fireball CX13.0A

Normally in a situation like this I would backup everything since I have my computers networked and start from scratch on my new hard drive but I cannot find my Windows XP CD so this is what I have to work with.

Ok,i had a computer:255 MB Ram1.3GHzit's a old computer but i still need it for work.Recently i installed a new hard drive because the other one was stolen.. now the new hard drive asks me to insert a boot disk.So i insert the Windows XP Pro cd that is installed on that hard drive.. then i click where it says:"Click any button to boot from the CD" and it says "Configuring system blablabla" then it just shut down.then i clicked F8 from the begining and "disabled automatic shutdown on system failure".. now instead of shutting down it gives this error:"Hard drive is corrupt, has virus or is not properly connected" (something like this)i tried 2 different hard drives and nothing... any help with this?thanks in advance!

Answer:Installed a hard drive.. but it asks for boot disk?

Since Win98 you cannot simply move Windows HDD's from one machine to another and expect them to boot properly ....What is it you want to accomplish with this machine ? ?256 Mg of RAM ain't much for an XP machine...

Ok i installed a TB hard drive as a slave. I have 40 GB hard with my OS on it. I just added the TB for storage. Now it appears that all these programs going on the TB are storing temp files or something on the 40 GB. Is there a way i can stop this? I tried to copy the 40GB over to the TB several times but the program that came with the HD was crap and didnt do it so i gave up and started using the comp like normal.

I think my options are
1. to make an image of the 40 GB and transfer it to the TB, then remove the 40 GB.
2. Simply take all the personal data and non windows files off of the 40 and move them to the TB, but this will cause all kinds of problems with the registry, no?
3. Remove the 40 GB wipe the TB and reinstall windows on the TB and start the rebuilding process for the eight time this year. (Darn you Windows Defender and your tricky little pop ups!!!)

Ok so most of this is based off of what i read and heard so don't yell at me for using the wrong lingo. I am moderately computer knowledgable(?). This was my first HD install though.

Any help would be fantastic.

I am very much at the end of my rope. Not only does Windows not load at all, but now when I try to repair or reinstall it, an error message comes up saying that I do not have a hard disk drive installed. I do not understand how this can be possible. I thought a computer had to have some kind of hard drive to run.

I have the system disk, but I can't repair it. What do I do about this "no hard disk drive installed" error?

Answer:Windows XP Pro Install Says I Don't Have a Hard Disk Drive Installed

First you might try opening up the computer. Make sure the white power cable is connected to the hard drive. Then one at a time, disconnect and reconnect both ends of the ribbon data cable. Have seen where this looks connected and even pushing it in doesn't always solve the problem.

When your computer first boots, but before you get any error message, can you get to your computer's CMOS to see what hard drive is detected. Is anything there and if so, is it correct. You need to get the computer to recognize a hard drive before it can boot from one.

The safest and surest way of getting rid of the virus is to re-format the hard drive and re-install Windows. If you had created a "clean" image of your hard drive before getting infected, you could easily have restored everything in ten minutes. After re-installing Windows, stop downloading torrents or using P2P filesharing software. They are the easiest ways to get a virus infection.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 running XP Service Pack 3. My original Western Digital Drive was dying. This drive was the boot drive and listed first in "setup" (after hitting F2) There was also a 300GB Maxtor SATA drive already installed which I used for data storage -- not bootable. It was listed 2nd in "setup".

Ultimately the WD Drive wouldn't boot. I cleared the 300GB Maxtor and did a clean install Win XP from manuf. disks WITHOUT removing the WD - Drive 1 first. (I had hoped to remove some data I hadn't yet back up

I tried rebooting BUT if both disks were set to "On" in "setup - F2" the system would NOT boot. If Disk 1 (WD Drive) was turned off the system would boot fine. I removed the "boot partition" on Disk 1 but if both drives were turn on - no go.

I have now replaced the defective drive (WD) with a Maxtor SATA II/300 (1 TB).

The boot drive (300GB Maxtor) is the "last" drive on the SATA interface cable and the new drive (1 TB) is on the second to last connector.
Still, if the blank, new drive is turned on in "setup - F2" the system won't boot. If off, system boots. (I want to use the 1 TB drive solely for data storage).

It seems the SATA controller refuses to recognize the bootable drive if both drives are active. All I can think of is this is due to the 300GB being "Drive 2" in my original system and still listed that way in "setup". There is NO ability to c... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron one 2305 all in one PC. Came with Win 7, I updated to Windows 10 about a year ago. First few month every thing was great! every thing worked fine. Then Cortana stopped working after a while I can no t search for anything. If you try to type a question it only allow you to type in Two letter and it quits on you. I tried the search trouble shooter but it could not Identify the Problem.
Second thing, MY Optical disk reader stopped after a update Oct 30 2016, I tried the trouble shooter same thing, I tried the Dell fix it, it said update the driver, went to do that that it said i have the lastest drivers, and it found no problem with my disk r/w. I am scared to try and reload win 10 online, because i have no disk reader to load win 7 if there a problem, reloading win 10, I will be totally shut out if a problem accords. Does any one have a solution to any of these problems? Help Please

Hi all, I've recently bought a second hand Lenovo Z580 and the optical drive needs replacing. I've looked up the hardware maintenance guide and it lists the following: ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PLDS DS-8A8SH
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PSN UJ8C1
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, Optiarc AD-7740H
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? https://www.businessdirect.bt.com/products/liteon-8x-internal-slim-dvd-rw-black-oem-ds-8acsh-BY5D.ht... I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

Answer:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,

Greetings.

As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.

For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .

Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

Thanks.

I have two identical hard drives connected as master and slave on primary ide channel, and two optical drives on secondary ide. The problem is that the slave hard drive will only run in pio mode, and not udma mode 5 (as the primary does). The upshot of this is that any file transfer to or from my slave drive results in 100% cpu usage, and it's very annoying. As I have an uptodate motherboard do you think that putting a hdd on each ide channel with optical as slave would speed things up?

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

If anyone can help me figure this out i am stumped. Pictures to help explain my situation. I have 3 hard drives that are not showing up in my computer but is showing up in Device Manager. They show up as "Disk 1 Unknown Not initialized". I cannot loose the data on the drives. in Diskpart it shows only as a drive and says 0gb meanwhile 2 are 320gb and the other is 2tb. Also i am connecting them via USB because they are from my desktop and my desktop wont boot off of them and neither will my laptop through bios. The drives also will not show up in Partition Wizard. The drive is spinning and has never been dropped. Also the drives do not show up in disk part as volumes. I need all of the data off the drives if possible. Thanks!

Answer:Hard drive not initialized and has data on it

Someone else will have to help you with getting your data off your drives (or, more likely, you will have to pay a recovery specialist well north of $1k per drive to attempt to recover the data with no guarantees of success, the option I would recommend since trying to recover the data yourself may permanently lose otherwise recoverable data) but, in the future, you need to backup your data to avoid this problem in the future. All drives will fail, some sooner than later, often without warning. The only way to reasonably ensure your data is safe is for it to exist in at least three places, such as on the computer, on an onsite backup, and on an offsite backup (I have five backups per drive, two onsite, two in my credit union safe deposit box, and on a paid cloud backup site). Backups need to stay disconnected from the computer except when updating the backup and need updating frequently since data not backed up usually can't be recovered. An acceptable low end plan would be an onsite external drive for each drive in use. A cloud backup plan, such as Carbonite.com, CrashPlan, or Backblaze (I use Carbonite) is an easy, fairly inexpensive way to get an offsite backup and keep it up to date (Carbonite starts at $60/month, the price I pay, and the others are similarly priced). The only caution is to use a cloud backup service, not a cloud storage service.

I initialized the HDD I was using for my PS3 with Disc Management so that Windows can read it when I right away realized that it wasn't such a great idea. Is there any way whatsoever that I can undo that so the PS3 can read it again?

Answer:Is there a way to uninitialize a just initialized drive without formatting?

Initializing the hard drive means you formatted it and erased whatever was on itSome say just put it back in and it will reformat itself. Other says to zero it out first with something like Killdiskhttp://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/702626

Answer:external drive say it was online, not initialized, and sometimes RAW

Hi andremarb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

From the description of your problem, I would think that the cable could have got damaged due the unceremonious kick that the HDD received. So as a first step use a new cable and check how your external drive behaves.

If the problem persists, please start a new thread explaining your problem in detail. Furnish full details of your external drive make/manufacturer/ Model /Capacity along with a full screenshot of how the drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Please adhere to the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

In the new thread, even if it is not me - so unreliable these days , some one else can address your concern. So move on with the new thread.

EDIT: Just noted that your post has been moved on to a new thread. But this post still holds - more details and screenshot after changing to a new cable.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

Hello,

New to the Tech forum boards but I am having a problem with my HP Pavillion dv6t. The hard drive went bad so I installed a new Seagate 1TB internal hard drive in the notebook. Starts up fine and then it says that "No bootable device found"---insert disk press any key. The disc is in the cd rom, I went into the BIOS enabled the CD/ROM boot option. I also went into the Boot option menu and tried selecting the internal cd/dvd rom drive option and I went into the actual boot order screen and adjusted the boot order so it read the cd-rom drive first then the hard drive. I also am using the HP Application and Driver recovery DVD. I am not sure if the disc is bad or cd drive is bad. The other thought is that because it is a brand new hard drive there is no information on it for the drivers so maybe the computer is not processing the information. If anyone has knowledge of this issue or any ideas that can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You
