laptop not booting

Question: laptop not booting

Hello,
I am pretty knowledgeable about computers but most my expertise is on the software/DB side of things. That doesn't stop friends and family from asking me to fix their mechanical computer problems and most that time it isn't an issue. Part of my problem with this case is I just don't have the tools to narrow the problem down.

I have a laptop where the corner (where the power plug also happens to be) has been smashed. When I took it apart to see how bad it is. There is only physical damage, it wasn't terrible. The metal hinge that connects the left end of the monitor to the case is obliterated but everything else seems fine. I was told it worked for a while after the damage but has since stopped working. My assumption was that the battery is no longer getting charged up do to the damage, but I have no way to test it with a different battery or putting the current battery in a new system.

Right now if I put pressure on the damage corner while power cable plugged in I can get the charging light to go on. If I hit the power button after it has been sitting for a while "charging" I can get it to send power for a fraction of a sec before going off. No screens load or anything but the power light goes green and I can hear the system cycle on for a sec before going blank again.

As of right now I intend to inform them they should take it to someone who has the tools to fix it because I would hate to buy them a new battery or replace the whole case itself only to have it not fix the problem. If you have any suggestions to test the battery or something that might be worth trying I would be thrilled to hear it!

Thanks for your time
Mike

Preferred Solution: laptop not booting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: laptop not booting

In my experience most power connections are on the motherboard. I would look for damage on the motherboard. A resister that's broken I suppose would sends excess power to the system. If the system detects excess voltage it may cause it to automatically shut off to protect the components. Of course this is just a guess but normally MB damage usually means more cost repairing than a new laptop. The fact that You have to put pressure on it suggests a short in the wire or its connection to the board as well... post some pictures if You can!

Laptop is not booting up. It is restarting again and again. Problem started in following manner.
-First while using laptop my keyboards stop functioning.
-Second When I restarted It starts normal but stopped accepting inputs from keyboard and even Window Virtual Keyboard.
-Third I tried reinstalling windows, When I tried to install it from pen-drive(bootable pendrive). It is not booting. It is restarting again and again.
Can any one help me on this?

Answer:Laptop is not booting. It starts booting but restarts before it gets boot properly.

First thing to do is run an extended (NOT just 10 minute) diagnostic on the hard drive.  If you need further assistance, post the results of that (numeric error codes) along with the full model information - i.e., Inspiron N5110, XPS L501x, etc.).

Press F12 a few times immediately after powering on to get into the diagnostics.

Hello there, occassional lurker, first time poster, hopefully someone here will be able to help

I've been setting my laptop to dual boot xp pro, and Ubuntu on a seperate partition. All was going well, until xp decided to die altogther. I don't have that error to hand, but it's gone a little further now.

Was going to install xp pro on a 3rd partition, and it started up fine. Now I can boot fine to Ubuntu, and the 2nd version of xp. However, the original xp is still having issues.

Now, when booting up, gets BSOD - bad_pool_caller. Code at the end is: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007,0x00000CD4,0x00000060,0x86F7E1FC)

Everything I've read suggests this is talking about a hardware or software conflict. However, I've not installed any new hardware. I suspect there is a software conflict between the two versions of xp, but I can't see how that can happen.

I can boot into the 1st copy of xp in safe mode, however, explorer.exe fails to start up. Tried running it in task manager to no avail.

I forgot to add - I am using GNU GBRUB to boot between the 3 operating systems.

EDIT 2: Tried it again to boot 1st xp in safe mode - new error for windows product activation - a problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the licence for this computer error code 0x800004005

Answer:Dual booting laptop crashes booting xp pro.

Are these installations of XP Pro on the two partitions diferent install disks with separate key codes?

While trying to clone my laptop's hard drive (running Windows XP Pro) so as to install its mirror image on my desktop,  I must have done something that caused this message "LTDR missing."When I googled that message for help,  I found your forum,  and did as instructed,  or at least I think I did.  I know I inserted the W XP cd disk at the right moment,  pressed the "r" key as instructed but never got to hit the 1 key.Right now the computer is endlessly booting into Windows, then entering setup's first window but never stopping long enough so as to allow me to repeat the instructions before it goes crazily about repeating the aforesaid cyle.  I've checked the BIOS to make sure it is still got the hard drive as first in the boot order.  But, no luck.  Unless I press the "off" button,  it seems as though the laptop would go till doomsday.  I appreciate any adice and thank all in advance for the assistance.mbrand.

Answer:Attempt to clone laptop HD is causing laptop to cycle without booting

Hi, Lots of people hee to try and help you.Yes, some OEM CDs of Windows XP to NOT have the repair option. But first a few questions.Whay kind of laptop? What type of HDD?What kind of Desktop? How did you interface the laptop HDD?Quoteinstall its mirror image on my desktopDid you mean to say that you made a copy or backup of the laptop HDD using a suitable image program? Which program? (Some programs will alter system information on the source disk. Who knows why.) Did you mean to say that now your Desktop runs the Laptop XP system? Were you able to "see" the files on the Laptop HDD?Do you have anyway to force the laptop to boot from a CD? Such as BartsPE or any other diagnostic CD?

hp laptop is not booting,
1) when windows xp installation cd is inserted , after saving the files, a message is coming that hard disk is not found, does it mean that hard disk physical connection is not there or some other problem.

Answer:hp laptop is not booting

probably a SATA drive and winXP cannot find - you may need the sata drivers

is the XP CD a recovery CD supplied with the PC - or different ?

whats the exact model of the HP

as the pc starts normally - you should see what Key (F2, f10, Del Key) to use to enter the bios/setup
you should be able to see the harddrive there - if not then theres a hardware issue

Hi

I?m not sure if it?s a hardware issue, or something else.

I was using my laptop yesterday and my nephew managed to switch it off by the power button when I stepped away for a moment. When I tried putting it back on it wouldn?t start up.

I briefly get the Toshiba screen come up but it?s there for 2 seconds before the laptop shuts down.

I?ve tried switching on with battery out using power cable. I?ve tried having no power connected and holding on button for 20 seconds then putting battery back in and plugging the power cable in. Neither of those have worked.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C850D, with Windows 10 OS.

Any idea on what I can do? Or would it be best to take it to a shop to get it looked at?

Amy

My dell inspiron 15 3542 suddenly logged out itself one day while i was working and then screen went off , then came again and then again went off..this happened for around 5 to 6 times later i directly switched off the laptop and reinserted the battery in the hope that it wud work but no it didnt. When i switched on my laptop it showed dell logo , that bar underneath reached full blue and then the system went off and the screen black. I again tried later after a few hours , this time i tried pressing f12 in order to run diagnostics but system just shuts down after dell logo and wont go any further. Rightnow i when tried again its is doing it over and over again..it starts, shows dell logo and then operating system shuts down and this is happening in loop repetitively without me touching any key. Please help as i have really important project to complete.

Answer:Laptop is self re booting itself

Please don't wait for Dell logo to appears, soon as you power on system, start tapping the F12 key continuously. After the diagnostic quick tests, click on Hard drive, and then Thorough Test Mode. Run Memory and Video Card as well.

Question: Laptop Not Booting

K, i got some PC knowledge, but i am baffled. Got a Toshiba portege 7200 sries. Had XP Pro SP2 had it for 2 weeks. had e trust antivirus, spybot, and the works. been working great, last couple days h/d been slow, then, I got home tonight, was on for 2 minutes, it crashed, when it rebooted, got to the xp screen with the bars going, after that, reboot again. I reinstalled xp, took forever to format the hard drive. After reinstall. got to xp screen, bars moved, then rebooted. It took 4 ever to format the drive. the blue screen came so fast, couldn't write the error message down. I think the hard drive went. Please Help, its not my PC.

Answer:Laptop Not Booting

Could be a virus, could be a bad hard drive - could be a lot of other things also. I'd suggest slaving the hard drive to another system (or using a USB drive caddy) to scan it for malware and to see if you can recover your stuff.

There's may be some utilities available at the hard drive manufacturer's website that will let you boot to a diagnostic program that they developed.

Hi My niece has a Toshiba Satellite laptop when you switch it on the Toshiba Inovations screen comes on telling you to use F2 for set up and f12 for boot manager and thats as far as it goes.Pressing any of those key does nothing, you then get a blank screen with just a white curser at the top left of the screen no boot up.
She said it might of over heated at some stage whether that has anything to do with it I don't know
Any ideas please

Answer:Laptop not booting up

Sounds a LOT like a bad hard drive. Can you tap f8 and get it to startup in safe mode? Note there are other possibilities, a white cursor I was told could be a loose video card connection or bad card.

1: Plug into an external monitor.
2: Go into setup and see if the drive is "there"

Question: Laptop not booting

Hi, my laptop has the windows/system32/config/software so I knew i needed a install disc to repair my computer but I tried using the windows vista ultimate from my main PC to repair the laptop which has windows vista home and all i got was a black screen with a flashing cursor. Does this mean I cant repair my laptop with ultimate(also I don't know if this means anything but on the back of windows vista ultimate case it says OEM software)? Any help appreciated!

Answer:Laptop not booting

I would think Vista would include a backup partition you can recover from?  Do you see any prompts at startup taht say something like "Press 'R' for recovery" or "Press F12 for help?"  Have you tried using F8 to boot to safe mode?  How far can you boot before it won't go any further? Is your BIOS set to boot to CD first?  If it is reading the disk, at the very least you would get a "Press Any key to boot from CD" instead of just a blinking cursor.

Hi,

Facing a big issue with my HP laptop. When I switch it on, it is neither showing a display nor is the HDD light blinking as it does while booting. Not sure what is the exact problem but this started after I switched on the laptop yesterday and heard two or three beeps and from then, it has been giving the aforementioned problem.

Looking for help on what the problem might be and it's possible solution?

PS: Two months back, I got the faulty battery of the laptop replaced + changed the GPU as the display was not showing up.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

When I switched on my laptop it loaded to Windows as normal but an error message regarding a DLL appeared, this was also accompanied by a message from Kaspersky anti-virus saying it had detected a trojan.

The procedure to remove the trojan took 10 minutes and required a reboot, during this a Windows 7 style error window popped up with a message ending with "bad image", then it reboot again.

Now I get the following message -

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1.19
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
Operating System not found.

After some googling I tried a few suggestions -

Making sure Network isn't a boot option
Checking if BIOS recognises HDD
Opening it up and checking cables
Punching it

Nothing has worked. Could it be over after only 3 months of ownership?

It's a Dell Inspiron 1764.

I've got an old laptop with only a CD drive. I recently reformated the hard drive and copied my windows 98 boot disk onto CD, thinking it would act just like the floppy. It didn't. Does anyone know if it is possible to boot up a laptop from CD and, if so, how. Many thanx in advance :-)

Answer:Booting a laptop from CD

If the CD drive allows booting from a CD, your first call would be to the BIOS.In the BOOT options there will be a list of boot devices. HDD, CDROM, FDD etc.Just select the CD Drive a the first Boot device and it should boot from the CD.However it will be quicker just to use your floppy boot disc.

Question: Laptop not Booting

Hey guys,

Im wondering if anyone can possibly shed some light on what might be going on with this laptop of mine. Since day one this laptop has been a hassle and the manufacturer has been next to useless. The laptop has been overheating after about 15-20 minutes of normal usage and when it does so the screen bleeds out and the computer has to be turned off an left to cool., Despite being sent back and forward from the manufacturer the problem persisted until the warranty expired.

I had recently been loading the computer up in an attempt to control the fan speeds through software and hopefully reduce the problem of the overheating. Today the computer was running for over an hour until the battery ran out and Windows went into hibernation. I let it cool down a little and charged it up and tried to turn it on and now I cant even get as far as the BIOS. 80% of the time the screen remains black, sometimes with the backlight on, sometimes without, the rest of the time the only thing the computer will do is display the BIOS version. After a short amount of time the screen will usually bleed out again and the computer must be turned off.

The computer is a Zoostorm Model: 3353-7701. Sadly Zoostorms website is less than useful for anything other than viewing the products they are trying to sell, there are no drivers or manuals available for this model of laptop and the Technical support has yet to get back to me on any of my questions.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me what is w... Read more

Recently my laptop is unable to boot up. The screen is blank and then frozen. I have to turn it off, unplug everything, and then wait for an hour to restart it again (and then it can boot up as normal). It all started last week after I installed Windows Media Player 10. I tried to restore the system back to a week ago, but the problem is still there.

Also, it always gives out a short "beep" sound after the laptop is ON for about 1 hour. Does it indicate that my mother board is having problem, or is it the hard disk?

Could someone please help! The problem is getting worse, the time taken to wait before a working boot up is getting longer. Thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to TSF.
I have moved your post to a new thread as threads are user-specific and not topic-specific. Although your problem and the symptoms may be the same as the original poster's, the solution may not be and this can cause confusion as I'm sure you will appreciate. I've also remove your email address to avoid you becoming the victim of spammers.

Try using "Last Configuration that Worked". To do this press F8 repeatedly during boot up and select from the menu.

Question: laptop not booting

Greetings,

This computer stopped booting. It would freeze in the process. Since there was nothing on the hard drive worth saving, I used the recovery boot cd. It went though the process, rebooted, and returned to the setup process. In the middle of the setup, while installing devices, the computer froze again. I have tried repeating the process to no avail. I have tried turning off some of the not so necessary things in the BIOS and trying it. But that did not work either. Any ideas?

Thanks, Pat

Right, I've got a bit of a problem that maybe someone can hep me with.

I currently have a friends laptop here which isn't working. It's a very basic machine, possibly 4+ years old. If it was mine I'd probably get rid, but they seem quite attached to it. Anyway, it just says Notebook on the lid, and a Model number of D22ES on the base. It currently doesn't have an OS as I've formatted the drive externally.

When the power button is pressed, the two fans whir for 3 or so seconds, until the HDD tries to boot. The HDD then clicks once and then the system shuts down. I can't get into the BIOS. I can't run from an OS CD. I have changed the CPU as luckily enough I had a spare which I know works, and by pressing the power switch enough times the CPU does get warm, which should mean that the MOBO is ok. I've disconnected the battery and ran straight from mains. I've disconnected the MOBO's on board battery and reconnected it to try to reset the BIOS. I've connected the HDD via an external enclosure to my PC and it runs sweet. I could access the documents and have ran tests and scans on the HDD itself, but the thing still won't boot. I've also tried 3 other HDD's, but none will pass the 'clicking harddrive' stage before it shuts itself down.

I've also connected it to my computers monitor. It sends a signal to the monitor as it clicks the monitor out of standby, before shutting down again. I&#... Read more

Hi,

First of I'm not that knowledgable about computers hence why I'm posting on here. (also not sure if this is a actually the right section to post this on either :/).

Anyways... Yesterday my laptop started playing up where nothing would load up at all nor would it shut down so I had to manually do it pressing the button. When I switched it on a black page came up saying that a hardware may not be configured properly and to try and repair it with the vista repair CD. It also had options for safe mode or start windows normally. I tried clicking each option but every time it would load up to the vista loading bar and then restart over and over again (even when I tried it for safe mode). So I googled what to do next and a lot of sites mentioned repairing vista with the repair CD so I thought let's try that!

I did get a CD with my laptop which I thought it was the repair CD. Turns out it's not, it's the manufacturers one (OEM I think it's called?) and it's only a full restore of vista that was already preloaded on my laptop when I got it. But I didn't know that! So I stupidly put the CD in and went through the steps and I realized that in actual fact it was reinstalling vista which I didn't want it to do so I cancelled it. Now here's where things went from bad to worse. When I switch the laptop on now a message comes up saying "bootmgr is missing. Press ctrl+alt+delt to restart".

And now I have no idea what to do now?!?! I would have done a full reinstall... Read more

Welcome
If you follow these instructions you will:
Be able to determine if your problem is hardware or software. If it is hardware you will not be able to load Ubuntu.
Second, you can back up your stuff.
Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek
After you have done the above, you can try to follow this tutorial or just use your CD to reinstall.
Bootmgr is missing
If the tutorial works, it would be the easiest method.

Go to the Bios and Make sure the BIOS is reading the HDD (where the OS is supposed to be installed). If not, make sure the hdd is attached/plugged in to the laptop correctly.

If the Bios can read it but you still can't boot up, you better wait for some of the more savy members here as laptops scare me!

Welcome to TSF

This is the reason I always suggest purchasing a 3 yr warranty on any system you buy.

Do you have any power to the system? Are there any light that come on when you press the power button?

I got the laptop very recently and it's worked fantastic. It's an ASUS, and although I'm not extremely tech savvy I believe there was an update for Radeon, the graphics card.
I left to go get something to eat as it updated, when I came back my screen had froze. I held the power button down and restarted it, and now whenever I boot it up it gives me a black screen with everything in white. At the very bottom it says: "CZBaseADValidator : : Validate - application WTU has no version attribute"

Question: Laptop not booting

I work with a Dell laptop encountering the following problem:
when booting I get the message "Primary hard disk drive

The A drive still works enabling me to read what is on a

Does this error message indicate that my hard drive

What else could I do ?

Answer:Laptop not booting

Unplug the USB Drive :-P

If that wasn;t the problem, it could be that the HDD was loose (unlikley) or that it fried out comepletly. I would remove the drive bay door and re-secure the drive, then try again. If it doesn;t work you'll be forced to use the cheesey Dell Support :-/

Hey there. My sister has an old laptop which she hasn't used for a long time (year or two) but now needs to use again. The problem is that it wont turn on. I've charged the battery (though not sure how long it will last away from mains supply) and have kept it plugged in while I try to turn it on but all that happens when i press and hold the on button is a very short, high pitch squeek and the power button flashes, nothing else. I'm not sure what is wrong but thinking possibly cmos battery? If it is the cmos, how do I replace this and is it expensive?

Could someone please help?

I Have a HP ZV5012AP laptop. When I turn the power on the laptop boots to the HP logo screen where you can choose to goto the bios setup(F10) or network setup (F12). However the laptop seems to lock at this stage and does not continue the boot to windows xp. When I press the F10 key the laptop say Please Wait.... and then locks up. I have checked to see if the memory module was seated correctly - OK.

When I try to boot from a cd the cd drive spins and again nothing - the laptop locks up...

Hi,
I have a rather annoying issue with my laptop. I will give you the specs first:
Samsung Laptop
Intel Core i5-2450M CPU 2.50GHz
8GB RAM
64 Bit OS
Windows 7 Home Premium - Service Pack 1
Originally I tried to boot my computer and it would just hang at the welcome screen after I entered my password. After rebooting it a couple of times hoping it would magically fix itself I booted into safe mode which it would do. I tried to run my own antivirus program, Avast, but that was not working so instead I ran Housecall which did a full scan and found no viruses... I was now aggravated and without the time to properly mess about so left it for a few days.
Today I have tried yet again. So far I have booted into safe mode and used msconfig to disable all my startups with the exception of the windows related ones. When I do this I can get past the welcome screen but once the desktop comes up, and it comes up slow, it will hang on something. First time Steam auto started and tried to do an update, I then went into safemode did the download and restarted but it hung up on something else no idea what.
I then went into msconfig and tried diagnostic startup, this also failed so I downloaded the video card drivers and reinstalled them, still no joy.
I should mention I have also tried the repair option from boot up screen you get from clicking F8.
I ran HijackThis from safemode and can post that in the proper forum upon request... I will however have to reboot because I have asked it to do to... Read more

Answer:Laptop isn't booting all the way

I have booted into safe mode and used msconfig to disable all my startups with the exception of the windows related ones.

Rather than disabling the starup items you should disable the services.  This is a clean boot which can point toward the service or startup item which is causing this problem.  Please follow the instructions below.

How to perform a clean boot

***This is a diagnotic tool for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.  This will not repair your computer, but it may point to where the problem lies so that a repair can be made.***

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

(1)  Click on the Start orb , then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

(2)  When msconfig is seen in Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

(1)  Click on the General tab.

(2)  Click the Selective startup option.

(3)  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

Hi All
I hope you can help, I have a spare laptop Toshiba Satellite A70 about 5yr old, I cannot boot it up and keep getting various errors. Firstly it would go straight to the chkdsk page but would not complete , even after waiting for ages, a few times it went further but could not get to stage 3.

After several attempts and trying in safe mode which would start going through files then just stop or go to another error page which is now what I can only get on the screen.

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage.....
Tech Info

STOP: 0 x 00000024(oxoo190203,0x83735848,0xC0000102,0x00000000

I cannot seem to get the XP CD to boot up either, I have tried going through F12, F2, C etc, if I select any options in F12 it just tries to go through the chkdsk or back to the blue error page as above

If anyone can advise that would be great, as I don't think it is worth spending money on to try and repair
Cheers

Answer:Help with LAPTOP not booting up

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

Good to see that you have the xp cd for the laptop.

Enter bios when pc is first turned on press F1.

Now under boot order:

cd/drive rom first
harddrive second
Floppy drive (if it has one)
other devices (varies on pc to pc).

Now will boot from the cd?, if it does:

1. Boot up from xp disc and enter recovery console when it gives you the option by
pressing R.

2. Next, you'll see a prompt to enter a number corresponding to the Windows XP
installation that you need to repair. Enter "1" and then supply your Administrator password.

3. In recovery console type: chkdsk /r

Definition - Scans your hard drive and attempts to repair any problems found.

DO this please and let me know if it found any problems and fixed them.
Also, if now it will bootup to the desktop also?

However, if this doesnt fix the problem then replace the command with this one:

chkdsk c: /p

and run this one the same way.

Hello everyone,
It's good to be a member of your forum. Now help me damn it! I have an HP laptop dv7 (3865 I think?). I turn it on last night and the screen won't come on. The LED lights light up and the hard drive spins away. I can even open the disk trey. I have absolutely no display though, and the LED lights and buttons are lit up but completely unresponsive.

It really seems like it's stopping in the middle of the boot process (except for the ability to open the disc trey. That throws me.), or at least I was hoping it was doing that because of a lose ram stick. When I went to check them, one ram stick did seem like it was lose, but when I reconnected them I had no luck.

I know it's an old laptop, but I can't afford to repair it or buy another one right now. I really need this thing urgently. I'm a software engineering student, and not having a laptop for school just won't do.

Any advice or tips or magic would be infinitely appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

Edit I have attempted holding down the power button after removing battery, securing ram sticks, and at multiple times through out the process hooking it up to an external display.

Question: Laptop Not Booting

Hello.

Got a Acer Aspire Laptop which i've tired reinstalling windows xp on a number of times. It will not boot up normally but does boot into safe mode. It's so fustrating.

If it does manage to load up to the desktop (which takes a few minutes) the mouse takes about 20 seconds to move each time you try and move it. I have two sets of RAM for the laptop, tried both and both do the same. I've reinstalled XP a number of times and two different versions of it too.

What confuses me is that it works fine in safe mode. Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks.

Answer:Laptop Not Booting

Does that mean that the mouse works normally in safe mode?

Are you using the laptop innate pointing device...or a real attached mouse?

Question: laptop not booting

hello

when i turn my laptop on, this is what happens

1. i get the "windows failed to start" screen and if i choose the "startup repair" mode, the screen says "windows is loading files" for a few minutes, then it says "WINDOWS HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM COMMUNICATING WITH A DEVICE CONNECTED TO YOUR COMPUTER even though NOTHING IS CONNECTED TO MY COMPUTER, and it'll make a horrible beeping noise if i press any keys. if i choose "start windows normally, nothing happens.

am i out of options? please help

Answer:laptop not booting

This is just a guess for now, but it sounds like a problem with the hard drive. Do you have a Windows Vista install DVD handy? If you do, try booting to that when you start your computer and when it loads up, instead of selecting "Install Windows Vista," select the option "Repair this computer" then select "Startup Repair." This will check the main files needed by Windows to load the operating system, and if there any errors that it can fix, it will fix them. This could be a solution to your problem, but if it isn't able to fix the errors, or there is something physically wrong with your hard drive, you may have to get it replaced. Let me know if you can do this and if it doesn't work, we'll try some other options.

Hi there all, i have an acer 5717Z series laptop with windows vista, my daughter was on msn when it ran out of power and since then every time we try to boot it up we get to a screen which says ....
Windows erroe recovery, windows failed to start.a recent hard/software change may be the cause.
If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, start up repair can diagnose and fix problem. i can then either choose, launch startup repair (recommended) or start windows normally.
when i choose startup repair it just takes me straight back to the page i have just described, when starting normally it tries to reboot but again ends up back at this screen. i have tried booting in safe mode but everything seems to bring me back to this windows error recovery screen.

I hope that someone can help me with a very frustrating and now worrying problem. My computer?s started to have problems booting up. It?s a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop (3 yrs old), 2.4Mhz Pentium 4m running Windows XP Pro. What now normally happens after switching on (it still boots up OK on the odd day) is that prior to going into the Windows XP screen, it freezes. What?s really weird is if I hit F2 prior to it freezing, it takes me into the setup page and then after I hit the ESC key, it then carry?s on normally and boots up OK. I?ve not installed any new software recently and I run Norton 2006 updates/Scans weekly in addition to running a Lavasoft Ad-Aware spy scan weekly. Also I?ve found that Outlook 2002, Word 2002 and Internet Explorer have also started crashing very regularly and I?m worried that my machine might be about to die. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks very much in advance

Answer:Laptop not booting up

It sounds like there may be a problem with one or more system files. Try start > run > sfc /scannow. (Note the space between sfc and the forward slash). This will scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

Question: Laptop not booting

Hey, I've had a laptop for a while now, (6 years) and it's getting up there in age, but it normally works well for taking notes in class and instant messaging/internet browsing at the library, etc. when I can't be on my desktop.

For about the last half year, its battery has been shot. If I unplug it, it dies immediately, but I was ok with plugging it in all the time considering how it was being used.

I was looking up something online when the power cord accidentally got knocked out of the back and the computer shut off. No big deal, so I plugged it back in, but for some reason, it won't boot.

The light will go on on the power button and the fan will whir to life, but after a couple seconds it turns off and the hard drive makes that beep noise that they make when the power is cut. Then it will start up again for a couple seconds and repeat. I cannot force shut it down as it restarts itself before I can hold the button long enough.

I looked around online for this problem and found several suggestions. So far I have taken out the battery, unplugged the power cord, have reseated the RAM and have taken out the hard drive and placed it back in. Originally, I thought perhaps my hard drive died, so I tried booting my desktop computer on it, it worked perfectly and I was able to grab my homework and such off of it just in case. Putting the hard drive back into the laptop did not change anything. It also did not change when I tried to turn it on without a hard drive.

Answer:Laptop not booting

I would think you busted the PSU. It's getting power, but not enough to fully boot it.

Can you run it without a hard drive? Just to see if it will post.

I've had my Philips Frevent x51 ( aka Twinhead F12D, Averatec 3715 ) for a couple of years now. It has always served me well.

Now my laptop will not switch on. There is definately power going into it as the blue lcd showing power and wireless turn on when I press the on switch. But that is all that happens. I have faintly hear something going on in the case but that is probably just the power going through it.

My other half being the IT geek took a look in the back panel ( if you know this particular make, you will know it has a small hatch to open and it is fiendishly difficult to get at the motherboard, hard drive etc. he thought it may be something to do with the fan. As I am not a complete IT geek I wouldn't have thought have opening up the back and giving it a clean. When my otherhalf did, he brought out what I can only describe as carpet underlay from under my fan. The dust and crud of about 2 years. It would not turn before but happily it moves now.

He put it back together to see if it would start. It did boot for about 2 seconds then went off again.

I have searched the forums for similar computers and mine is slightly different in that there is definately power going into the laptop but the screen is not coming on, the fan is not turning and no boot. I am still trying all the advice I've read on here , removing the battery etc. Thanks to different forums I have now discovered most of the hidden screws to get the laptop apart if need be but hopeful... Question: Laptop not booting

WinXP Pro SP2 or SP3 - this laptop had a new 120gb IDE hard drive installed about 2 months ago and was working fine up until 2 or 3 days ago. Now it does not boot. No error, no reboot... it powers on to the IBM logo, the logo goes away, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner for maybe 3 seconds, then the screen is just black and the PC is still powered on but there is no drive activity. Using F8 to boot to Last Known Good Configuration has the same result (but the F8 menu does come up like it should). Trying to boot into Safe Mode gets to the 5th or 6th file, it's C:\windows\system32\config\software (I think rolleyes but it might be ...\config\system). Then it just stops there, no error, no reboot, no drive activity, nothing. Just the 5 or 6 files listed on screen. CTRL + ALT + DEL does nothing and the only way to regain control is to hold down the power button. The BIOS settings are OK; I ran an in-depth extended RAM diagnostic and it was 100% OK; I'm running a HD test right now. I booted to a PECD and the data is visible on the hard drive so I don't think the drive is mechanically or physically damaged. My next step will be to run CHKDSK. Any other ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions? All input is appreciated!

Thanks!

Answer:Laptop not booting

:celebrate Problem solved!!!

The HD passed the diagnostic 100% as I thought it would. I booted to an XP Pro install CD, went to the recovery console, ran chkdsk c: /r, let it complete, typed exit, the PC rebooted and the XP desktop loaded up... chkdsk worked like a charm. I'm typing this from the laptop! All is well! Now to run some malware scans just to be sure it's all copacetic....
:cool

My other half has been given a laptop that has been jiggered about with. All I know of this machine is there's a verison of Windows 98 on it - I can briefly see it on startup - but the machine then boots into DOS. I, for my sins, have been asked to help. Any ideas, or is it worth trying a reformat?Thanx

Answer:Laptop booting into DOS

Well, one thing you can do at the DOS prompt is type winThat may start windows for you.If not, typec:\windows\winthat may start windows. If not, typeedit c:\autoexec.bat[I think that is the required command]and post back what is there - it will give an idea of why windows is not loading.

Hello,

I got this BSOD while booting the laptop after the Windows screen.

Please check and let me know what went wrong.

Thanks,
Nick

Answer:BSOD while booting the laptop

MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

Do you have a SSD?

Hi! I've been having a lot of trouble with my ibuypower laptop recently. When I try to boot my laptop, it boots to the initial logo screen but won't advance any further. It just sits there until I turn it off or it runs out of battery. However, after a few days it will start working again. I don't think it's an overheating issue because sometimes it won't start even after a few days of non-use, but that fact that it can completely boot after a period of not working confuses me greatly. Is it a hardware issue? Any advice?

For extra clarification
-I can't boot in safe mode because it doesn't register any of my key inputs when it gets stuck on the logo screen
-I've had the laptop for 2 years and have occasionally run into a blue screen here and there, but never an enduring problem like this

I'm studying abroad in a couple of weeks, so I really want to sort this problem out before I leave!
