Hard drive caddy or USB to SATA adapter

Question: Hard drive caddy or USB to SATA adapter

Hello, any information would help here,

My graphics card (built into motherboard) has blown and I had to buy a new PC. I would like to transfer some of the files from the old PC (not all files, just some) onto my new PC and was told I needed a hard drive caddy. My new PC is an ACER and my old PC was an Acer L100 with a 3.5 hard drive. I was wondering, what would be better for accessing/opening and transferring files from the old PC onto the new PC. Either
A. Using a USB to SATA adapter shown here :

IOMAX USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter Kit with Power: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

B. or using a hard drive caddy, shown here:

Dynamode 3.5 inch SATA and IDE Slim Line Storage Disk Caddie: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Or do I just need a USB cable to connect to both computers.

Thanks if anyone can help,
Regards,
David

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Hard drive caddy or USB to SATA adapter

You can hook your old drive to your motherboard, most likely. You may not have the room to fit one in, but most likely you have more SATA ports available that you can use. What is your new Acer model?

Hello guys,

Can 9.5mm Universal SATA 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy work on Lenovo Laptop G510 ?

Answer:9.5mm Universal SATA Hard Drive Caddy work ?

Don't know why it wouldn't. Most laptop cd/dvd drives can be removed and caddy put in.
Lenova specifically? Not 100% but no reason it not.

Do you know a best practice to configure properly the 2nd SATA Hard Drive Bay Caddy?? Thanks in advance!Fabio

HelloI upgraded my laptop with SSD disk (Samsung 850 250 GB) and I wanted to join origin HDD (500 GB /5400) via HDD caddy adapter instead of DVD. When I plug the adapter the laptop does not work (only the opening inscription "Lenovo" is started). When I interchange disks (SSD in adapter) everything is OK. BIOS is upgraded.Thank you for every advice.

Ok so basically i see dvd drives that replace the optical drive and allow you to put a 2nd hard drive on things like laptops.

The issue is i want one for a desktop as the ones i am finding are too small to fit in one of my desktops. Normally there is more than 1 expansion slot for an additional hard drive on MOST desktops but this isn't the case for mine as i am using a sff model and well the only way to add another hard drive is to take off my optical drive and swap it with some sort of expasion.

Anyone know where to buy one of these for a desktop optical drive as the ones for laptops are smaller

I want to transfer data from my hard drive in my laptop (Lenovo Y480) to a hard drive in my desktop. the cables for the sata adapter do not fit the hard drive from the laptop. Is there a different form for a 2.5 hard drive and a 3.5 hard drive?

Answer:sata to usb adapter cable dosen't fit sata hard drive in laptop?

Does the drive have an adapter need to remove to expose the SATA conenctors? I don;t see anything about the Y480 not having a standard SATA drive and laptop and desktop SATA connectors are the same.

Maybe post pictures of both the drive and your SATA cables.

Hello guys!We are trying to install a Crucial m500 960Gb SSD into the hard drive bay adapter for the w540.While the drive fits, once it's connected is not snug and kind of "rattles" inside the bay adapter. It turns out that you need one of this little adapter/spacers that are present in the actual main SSD that came with the machine. We've searched everywhere for the part number or even it's name, with no luck.
Here's the picture of the part:

How can we get one?
Shouldn't this part be included in the Hard Drive Bay Adapter IV?

Hi everyone,

I have tried new Lenovo Product: IdeaPad 500 ISK with Intel Real Sense Technology.

It is great experience with this device in my country whereas price / perfomance is super great .

However, one unbelivable issue coming when I have tried to replace the DVD (ODD) with a SSD drive.

Using a caddy bay at ODD, testing through F11/F12 Boot Menu Selection, we get the following results:

1. Internal HDD: SATA 3.0 (6.0Gb/s) Hard Disk 750GB
Caddy Bay: SATA 3.0 SSD Samsung 850 EVO
=>> Unable to Boot through SSD (F11 Selection, also not appear in BIOS) also not detect SSD after booting to Windows.

2. Internal HDD: SATA 3.0 HDD 750GB
Caddy Bay: SATA 2.0 HDD Toshiba
=>> Both drives detect in BIOS and Windows.

3. Internal HDD: SATA 3.0 HDD 750GB
Caddy Bay: SATA 3.0 HDD Seagate
=>> BIOS and F11 selection only detect Internal HDD but Windows could detect also using Caddy Bay Hard Drive normally.

I have also tested some other cases with different Caddy Bay Brand, Hard Drives, with Switchs change in Caddy Bay and got the same result.

Making some research over Internet I have found some other users got the same issues like this.

To sum up, it is right time for Lenovo to help us with new BIOS which bring better compatible to SATA 3.0 device under their SATA 2.0 port for DVD. (This is also a strange in design which a new powerful Skylake still have some SATA 2.0 Port).

Hello, I have the SATA HDD Bay Adapter (40Y8725).  Should I buy a caddy of some sort to protect the disk before inserting it into the bay. Thanks

Answer:SATA Hard Drive Adapter

Hi there, and welcome to the forums. No there's no need for additional hardware or equipment. Just insert the drive (SATA or SATA2) into the ultrabay (drive label side up), slide it in snuggly, close the black clasp and then you're all set. The tight connection plus the black clasp hold the drive in the ultrabay caddy very tightly, so no need for additional brackets. You'll also note that the ultrabay adapter is made of heat dissipating metal on the underside.  Here's the User Guide (pdf) for the ultrabay adapter. It shows pretty pictures depicting the drive installation procedures. Hope this helps!SteveMessage Edited by icantux on 06-27-2008 04:50 PM

I have been trying to recover files from a corrupted hard drive. No OS will boot on it, scandisk freezes on trying to correct index errors, HDD Regenerator shows no bad sectors.

The only option left that I can see is using an adapter and trying to pull the files off through a pc, but this hard drive, Seagate Momentus ST9160821AS, has a interface that I am not farmiliar with.

I do have an IDE converter for laptops but it interfaces with pins, and I cant find a converter that fits with this one, probably because its SATA NCQ. Is there another name for this kind of adapter that i can't find?

Here are some pictures of the interface, hope somone can give me some info on it.

You could buy an external USB Sata enclosure for the notebook drive, and access it that way. This Seagate drive should be replaced under warranty (5 year)

Hello all,
I am trying to access my wife's macbook hard drive via my Windows computer using the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter. The Apple techs said they could not get the drive to register when they hooked it up. However, we gave it a good drying with blow dryer.

The adapter works fine and all the correct drivers installed.

I am in disk management and the 250GB drive seems to be showing up. However, it is not showing up in My Computer and right click shows "assign a letter" is grayed out.

Answer:SATA USB Adapter With Macbook Formatted Hard Drive

You are going to need a utility like MacDrive
to read the files. About all you can do directly from the windows management in this instance is format the drive. (which would result in the complete loss of data on the drive)

Also if any of the apparent moisture involved got inside the housing it's very possible the data is damaged beyond recovery. Since hard drives save data to the disk by creating what is essentially rust (iron oxide) manipulated magnetically on the surface.

There is likely a free utility out there that does the job. I just don't deal with mac's very often personally so it's not something I would be aware of, you might try google.

I bought this ThinkPad 9.5mm SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter IV from Lenovo part number is 0B47315. So I put my secondary hard drive in it and put it in the machine...and boot up my windows 7 440p laptop. I didn't pay attention at boot time, but windows 7 does a chkdsk on it and drops all the partitions on the drive..causing me to lose my data on it. Anyone have used this adaptor successfully? I don't see this part number on the unit anywhere: 0B47315the secondary hard drive adapter still has a very visible gap(at least 1/8th inch) between the frame and the hard drive all around so it allows for the hard drive to have a lot of wiggle room in the adapter.I see this part number on the unit: FRU P/N 04X1602. Thanks in advance.

Answer:440p ThinkPad 9.5mm SATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter IV....anyone have used this successfully?

I have one.  I noticed the gap around the drive and used a piece of metal tape on the front edge to secure it to the base of the adapter.  That worked fine. That said, however, I quit using it and just got a larger capacity SSD as a single drive.  A spinning hard drive in the adapter makes both heat and noise.  There's no good exhaust path for the heat, and the spin noise is annoying.  Maybe an SSD in the adapter if you want.  But a terabyte SSD in the main slot is good enough for me.

I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... I have a 120GB 2.5" SATA drive spare that I want to use on my desktop PC. I have one of those USB caddy devices - the USB cable is two-headed at one end with one plug on the other. If I use it on my laptop, I plug the two USB cables into the side and connect the HDD into the caddy and it works perfectly - Windows (8.1) shows the drive immediately. However, when trying it on my desktop (and I have drive many different USB ports) the LED on the caddy comes on, but when connecting the drive (or connecting the USB cable to the caddy with the drive already in place), nothing happens - sometimes you can hear the drive attempting to start, sometimes you can hear nothing. But nothing registers on the PC either - there is no USB connection sound for example. The drive is in good condition and hasn't ever been used that much. And it shows on the laptop as working perfectly. So why can't my desktop PC (also Windows 8.1 and clearly has more power available to give out) start the drive? Thanks for any ideasmessage edited by Alex2002

Answer:SATA drive caddy works on laptop - but not on desktop?

Maybe the two close USB's are using a common power source. If you have a USB extension lead it would be worth seeing what happens if you use two USB's that are further apart.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have an apparent hard disk failure and I am planning to install a new disk, but I want to insert the failed disk into a disk caddy to attempt recovery of a few items of data which were not backed up.

There is however a clip which secures one of the cables onto the drive housing, and I have not encountered this type of clip in previous drive rescues. The clip is pictured in these linked images:

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

Since changing to 7, I've had a really hard time cleaning infected hard drives. In fact, it's been impossible. With XP, I could connect the infected drive using a SATA/IDE-to-USB adapter, take ownership of the drive and get rid of the offending files. With
7, however, the drive isn't recognized until I initialize it which, naturally, will blow away everything on the drive.
It's another MSoft catch-22. If I back up the data so it's safe to initialize, then I have to be able to access the data to back it up so I can initialize it, right? If I do that on the infected computer, chances are I'm backing up the virus anyway.
Same goes for old hard drives I have lying around. I'd love to see what's on them but I can't unless I first initialize them which precludes my ability to see what's on them. I don't have an IDE port on my desktop so some of these drives cannot be connected
directly.
Finally, I don't do this kind of stuff all the time anymore due to health reasons so it's not worth building a retro machine just for this purpose.
Is there not some kind of work-around for this or is another shining example of planned obsolescence?

I'm out of my mind, please leave a message

Hi, my 10yr old pc (xp with sp3) became so frustrating slow that i decided to replace it in July with a Windows7 system that has a 120Gb SSD +1Tb hdd and 16gb memory. There is stuff on the old pc's hard drive that i'd like to use so, is it possible to remove it and put it in a caddy and connect it to my new pc using a usb cable? If yes, is it straightforward or am i dreaming?? Thanks for any info. - Tony

Answer:Using old hard drive in a caddy

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

Hi All, I am hoping someone here will be able to help me.Basically, I have removed a Western Digital HD 160GB from a PVR that was playing up (think the HD is ok).I have an external caddy I use for a DVD RW and another internal HD, although I would like to try to use this HD for storage also.I have connected the HD to the caddy, and although it shows up under my device manager without any errors, nothing shows up in my computer, therefore not being able to use it.Is there any way of getting this to work?

Answer:How to use PVR Hard drive for PC Caddy

Set the jumper on the drive to Master. itshould then show in My computer.Did this with a 160G drive from a Tevion also found some software to convert the rcorded programs so I could play them on my PC before formatting the drive and using for a back up.

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

I also purchased the drive caddy for my T520 and had the same questions and comments you had. I think Lenovo expects that you purchase the HD from them with the caddy on it.

There are thousands og them around, emmandelo, but you haven't said if your hard drive is IDE or SATA. Yon can get enclosures that will take both types though. click here You could also search EBay.

I have a hard drive 'enclosure' (caddy) into which I have permanently fitted one of my old Hard drives.
Instead of buying another can I use a docking station in the link below.
I want to use another 2 or 3 hard drives for back up and that would save me the cost of a number of caddies?

It does seem obvious but looks too good!?

The caddy I currently use:-

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

They're probably 3.5" (measure the width which will actually measure about 4" if they're 3.5" drives) and most likely to be IDE, but check this. Which connection do they have on the back?

I find hard drive terminology a bit confusing. All these SATA and PATA acronyms...!I have an external HDD in a USB caddy, for backing up. However, it's a bit small, and I want to fit a new, larger capacity one.The data connection to the HDD within the caddy is the good old grey multi-strand ribbon cable that's been used within PC's for yonks. Am I right in thinking that, so long as the drive I buy is specified as "IDE", then that's the type of data connection it will have? While I'm at it, does anyone have recommendations for a good deal on a drive - about 200GB?Thanks for any advice.

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?

Hi, having recently upgraded the stock hard drive to an SSD in my Edge 11 laptop, I've misplaced the carrier part that secures the drive to the laptop, preventing it from coming out when knocked or moved. Everything works apart from when the drive comes loose and the laptop then needs a re-boot, as well as removing the back plate to refit it. As you can imagine, this is a massive inconvenience, especially when I'm out.I've called Lenovo support but the rep i talked to didn't seem to know anything about a caddy to secure it, and said he could not help me as it is a third party hard drive. Does anyone on here have any idea where I can buy one, or even have one themselves to sell? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 11 Hard drive Caddy

joecarver, welcome to the forum,

the only easy way to get hold of the hdd caddy is to purchase a hard drive from Lenovo as an accessory or spare part for your system.

One of the sponsors of forum.thinkpads.com may offer them, (see advert at the top of the boards), but they are unfortunately in the USA. You may have some luck and someone here pops up with the unknown FRU number or has a broken system which they are parting out.

Good luck!

I have just bought this brand new usb hard drive caddy enclosure from ebay. It was listed as a 1.8" IDE kit and also states on the box, I have a 20GB hard drive from an ipod which is what I got the kit for but it's not the right enclosure, ipod/mp3 player hard drives are 1.8" IDE.

This enclosure is square, the internal board has 4 screw holes (screws supplied with kit) and a black block connector attached for the gold IDE pins to insert into.

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT AND ALSO VIEW THE 3 JPEG PHOTOS ATTACHED TO THIS POST, 2 OF THE HARD DRIVE KIT AND 1 OF THE HARD DRIVE I THINK FITS.

Thanks.

I have a 200gig hard drive on my T61.  Since my computer has died twice in a year I want to have a cloned hard drive handy to insert and not miss a beat and not fuss with reinstalling everything. When I bought the machine I also bouht a hard drive caddy...http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... I bought a SATA 500 gig hard drive and inserted this into the hard drive caddy.I inserted the caddy into the CD drive area. Now what?  When I click on "My Computer" I do not see the drive listed? Do I need special software to make a clone of my hard drive on here?   Recommendations?I thought Lenovo had one that came with it, but I do not see anything?Should "My Computer" see this drive with the caddy? All advice greatly appreciated!!

I was wondering if there was a supported HDD caddy for the Aspire E5 575G 55NW? I did find this, but it doesn't seem to support my laptop: https://us-store.acer.com/42-gden7-sv1#_ga=1.233576222.125166628.1475259256.

Answer:Hard Drive Caddy for E5 575G 55NW

Hello, If your laptop is equipped with the HDD socket (#C), you can use this kit without any problem. You have just to check it by removing the door.

Hi,Can anyone advise me if it is possible to format a new unformatted hard drive in an external USB2 caddy. Some years ago when I tried this I finished up removing a drive from my PC and plugging in the new one. After formatting, the new drive was recognised and worked OK in the USB2 caddy.I would like to avoid the hassle of dismantling my PC if possible and would therefore welcome any comments.Thank you.

Answer:Can I Format a New Hard Drive Via a USB2 Caddy?

I too used to use the substitution routine to format a new HD, but more recently have had a hard time doing this with large HDs. In the end have reverted to the old method only so that I could use the manufacturer's own software downloaded onto a floppy. That does all the patitoning and formatting in a very short time.Only snag is that such floppys tend to be very keen on supporting only their own brand, and might not work if your primary drive is not of that family.

Hello Lenovo community, Im completely floored as to why no one has even bothered to ask this question, even when i searched it on google.com.  Is it possible to have a second hard drive in a thinkpad edge 14 series by removing the optical DVD storage device with a HDD caddy?  If so what type of hard drive caddy would i need, and if you could please link to it. Much appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 2nd Hard drive Caddy

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The Slbook doesn't mention anything about SATA HDD Bay adapter, even the optical drive is not termed Ultrabay, I think it's suffice to say that such expandability option doesn't exists for Edge.

Hope this helps.

HiI was hoping someone on the forums could give me some advice.I'm after an External USB 2.0, 3.5" Hard Drive caddy. I have an 80GB IDE hard drive I want to connect to my new PC, and have decided that it makes sense to connect it externally, so I can use it as a portable device.ebuyer are doing caddy's for 19quid plus delivery. But being a bit of a snob :) I'm after one that will look nice next to my case/monitor. The ebuyer device looks OK, but I'd like alternatives to compare. So if anyone knows other retailers selling them please could you drop a post here. Also interested in any caddys that have pass through USB ports as well. Thanks

I bought a T500 on ebay that didn't comne with the hard drive caddy to hold the drive in the bay.  I was wondering if any of the caddies sold on eBay would work or if there are different sizes for that part.  From what I can tell all of the caddies seems to be the same with the metal bracket and the rubber rails. Thank you

Answer:T systems hard drive caddy question

There are 2 sizes of caddy to fit 9.5mm drives and 7mm drives. Your machine was designed to work with a 9.5mm drive. There are 3 kinds of rubber rails:1) fits 7mm drives, 7mm caddy, 7mm drive space.2) fits 9.5mm drives, 9.5mm caddy, 9.5mm drive space3) fits 7mm drives, 7mm caddy, 9.5 mm drive space

Hi all, I bought 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy for my T430s but it does not seem to work. The HDDs I placed in it do not even start to spin, and they are not recognized by the laptop BIOS as also by my OSes, Windows and Linux. The label on the caddy says it is P/N 26r9247, but at this stage I'm not sure is a compatible part or if I got just a faulty item. Any feedback?

brand new t530, ordered with two hard drives. lenovo caddy in ultrabay. it seemsthat ultrabay hard drive is going off to sleep mode after a period of inactivity. is therea was to disable powering down of the hard drive  in ultrabay because this is notacceptable. any ideas? much appreciated. edit: i am not using a dvd drive nor will i be switching between dvd drivein ultrabay and caddy with hard drive. caddy with hdd will always be inultrabay and i'd like to have access to it at all times. also, i  don't have lenovopower manager installed. there's just power management in control panel ofwindows 8 and i have turned all power savings off. although, in windows 8 (afaik)there is no setting for ultrabay or anything similar. also, all hard drive power offsettings are disabled meaning they are set to 99999 minutes.

I recently upgraded the HDD in my Aspire E5-551 to SSD to speed up the system.  So far, it works like a charm.  Bootup is crisp and quick and the system is running smoother than ever.  I would like to use the original HDD as a storage drive and I would like to mount it in the (currently empty) ODD bay using a standard caddy unit.  I purchased two different HDD caddies and both show the same problem.  The unit installs just fine and indicates that it is powered, but the second drive does not show up in This PC or in Disk Management.  I have no doubt that I likely missed a step or two in the install, so I'm curious if anyone has been able to do this with their systems and if anyone was able to find the workaround so the drive can be accessed.  Any info would be helpful.  Thanks. For the record, my unit is now Windows 10 with the most recent BIOS update (ver 1.12).

I've started a digital film course and need to shift my saved footage between my Mac in school and PC at home. I have a couple of old hard drives sitting around so I'm thinking a caddy might be the right idea.
What do I need to look for in the specifications etc? Any reliable brands?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone !   I just bought an Omen 15-ax000 notebook.  It has an M.2 SSD for its primary drive, and I'd like to add a secondary SATA drive. However, the notebook didn't come with the necessary caddy / cable / bracket kit to mount a drive in the open bay.   Where can I get one? I am living in Australia, I didn`t find it on Ebay. I was wondering if HP has official spare parts stores that I can go to and buy these items. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, Harrisson Almeida.

Hi,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Thanks

I received the caddy from newmodeus and I popped in the hdd, which came with W520 primary bay, into the ultrabay.everything is running fine, but the speed in HWINFO64 is shown as 1.5Gb/s. however the HDD itself support SATA II, which is supposed to be 3.0Gb/s. anything wrong with my setup or caddy? I emailed the newmodeus and the replied me that "Our caddy has a pass-through SATA connection. It will support the maximum speed your optical drive controller will support". any thought on this? Thanks

Answer:Hard drive in Ultrabay Caddy shows 1.5Gb/s

Tolgcc: The hard drive caddies are nothing more than a fancy version of a cable that connects the drive to the computer. If the drive is not operating at fast speeds, probably best to go troubleshooting somewhere else, although I don't really know where to suggest. I have an Intel application on my computer called "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" - that displays the SATA transfer speed of the disc - you might want to have a look at that application, and also check to make sure you have the latest version of that application and the driver associated with it. The easiest way to get it is to use the Lenovo System Update tool. Michael
