Dell desktop won't power up - blinking orange light - power supply?

Question: Dell desktop won't power up - blinking orange light - power supply?

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

Yesterday, I was just sitting there watching TV at my computer desk, with the computer on, next thing I know- I look over and the computer was shutdown. I didn't know why, so then I go to turn it on, it will not turn on- and the power button, that should be green, starts blinking orange. I'm not sure what the problem is, I think something might be dead. I have been getting a message that says "Alert! System Battery Voltage Low" for about 2 years, I'm not sure if that would be it or not (Maybe that died? Would that do it? I don't know).

When I try to turn it on, I can see the fan and stuff turn on for about half a second, then everything just turns off except for the mobo light and the orange blinking light. I've tested my brothers working power supply in mine, so I know that mine still works because that didn't fix it. I've taken the graphics card out, that didn't do it either. I don't know what else I could do, please help somebody, I'm lost without my computer... Thank you.

I have a dell t3400 (core duo e8400, 4gb Ram...) which was powered by the oem psu, but I changed it to a corsair vs450 so I could power my gpu. Two months later, after taking the gpu and psu to another pc, I put the oem psu back into the dell, and tried to power on, but there is a blinking orange light in the power button. I doubt it is a mobo problem, because it was working today. Any ideas?

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

Answer:No Power, Blinking green light on power supply and motherboard

Sounds like a Power Supply problem.

Hello everyone this is my first post here. I own a dell optiplex 745 with a core2duo 1.8 Ghz processor, 2 gb RAM and have also added an XFX HD 5550 to it. I have been using it since almost two years, and it hasn't caused me many problems except this blinking orange power light.
The problem is just this that the desktop just won't start. All that happens is that the power light just blinks orange. This has happened to it almost four times in the last two years, and the problem has seemingly resolved itself the last four times. Well it would go something like this: I would turn off the PC normally, and the next time i started it all i would get is this blinking light. Then after a couple of days or hours, I would try again and it work as if nothing had happened. But this time it happened four days ago. I turned it off, then switched it on but i got the orange light. Since then, I have tried so many times but this time I fear something much bigger has happened.
Now I have done a decent amount of work in trying to figure out whats the problem. The key thing to note is that its not my PSU (yes i used a different one). Does this mean it's my motherboard which is causing the problem? Or is it something else?
I did a bit of digging up on the internet for the same problem, and I saw one which said something about a faulty power on button
I havent tried it but I... Read more

Answer:Optiplex 745 Blinking Orange Power Light

According to the Dell manual this is either a power supply or motherboard problem.  It doesn't detail how to further troubleshoot.
Do you get any diagnostic lights? or beeps when you power it on.
But, you can remove the video card to see if the symptom changes.  If not, reseat the memory as a next step.
If neither of these help you are back to either the replacement power supply or a motherboard problem.

2. Power off and unplug power cord from *rear of PC*. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec. Reconnect cord to rear of PC. See if it boots now.
3. Have you disconnected all peripherals, including mouse and keyboard?

I am working on a frends desktop that recently might have been hit by lightning. After a big storm their desktop would no longer power on. Now, I am no stranger to computers. I unplugged the motherboard main connector and I get a solid green light when I plug the psu in. Plug the main connector back in and plug the psu in I get blinking light again. So either its the PSU or mainboard. Im thinking psu since usually that is what goes first, but at the same time I am leaning towards mainboard. what do you all think? On another note, Are these boards proprietary? I have a few standard ATX PSUs I could test my theory with but not if I have to rewire them.

Hi, i recently bought a new computer and decided to give my parents my old one. Before doing so, i took the side off and blew out all of the dust. I also took out my video capture card since they wouldnt need it. Well, after all of that i hook it up for them and it wont come on. I check out the back of the PC, and the power supply light is blinking. After some unplugging and plugging in of the power cables from the power supply, i notice the light starts blinking(and clicking) when i plug in the motherboard.I figured maybe the heat sinc had came loose from the processor after reading some possibilities online and figured i could just but some thermal paste and redo it myself. After applying new thermal paste and getting everything set, i try the computer again and its still doing the same thing. Im frustrated at this point because before i cleaned it out, it worked great.Since i was able to narrow it down to the power cable plugging into the motherboard, i figured i would mess with it a little. I noticed that as soon as i started to plug it in the light would blink but when i would pull it out and it stopped. Then the next time it would go further before it started to blink. After removing it and plugging it back in i was able to get it to plug in without the light blinking. The computer powers up, works as if everything is fine. I can even shutdown the computer and the start it up days later without issue. Now for the problem. I was plugging some stuff in earlier and hit the ... Read more

Hello, I the power supply light of my Media Center m1050y is blinking and the PC does not turn on at all. So I tried the troubleshooting sequence posted here in the HP Support site, and after unplugging all the cables and replugging them one by one, it turns out that the light blinks only when the PS is connected to the mother board (the connection is a white, wide plug with about 12 pins - pardon my ignorance on the actual name). I looked on the internet about trying to narrow the cause on the motherboard and I unplugged the front USB ports, the fan, and other "solutions" without any luck. Does this mean the motherboard is fried and either I need to replace the motherboard or look for another PC? Thanks!

Answer:Power Supply Light Blinking When Plugged to Motherboard Only

What troubleshooting sequences did you try......was it this.   Suggestion: get a hair dryer, and use it at the rear vent. See if the light stops flashing. Read about the hair dryer tip here.

My mom gave me a Dell Dimension 4700 computer that was acting up. She said it would turn it's self off randomly and she thought it was a virus. When I brought the computer to my place, it powered on once, then I went to turn it on again and nothing. No lights, no power what so ever. So after doing some research I bought a new power supply for it. I just replaced the power supply and plugged the computer in and now there is a blinking amber light in the front and a solid green light on the motherboard but it won't turn on. I have checked all of the connections and they are properly seated. Any ideas what is causing the problem?

I have a Dell dimension 4700 . I recently acquired it from work. Not necessarily in the best condition. I cleaned it up and tried to power on and all it does is blink orange/amber,it will not power on . It has started since I've had it though and i cleaned it up and it ran great, but i only got it to start one time. Its running WinXP Pro,with a Pentium 4. So what i know is that the mobo is getting power because the green light is on. I have checked the 4-pin aux cord that powers the processor. I know the power supply is set to the correct voltage. All cables seem to be connected properly. I have run out of ideas. Any Suggestions would be much appreciated!

Answer:Dell Dimension 4700 Blinking orange, no power

Even though you have a green light. The power supply could be bad. The green light says that the +5 volts is being produced. There are several volages the come from a computers power supply, not just one or two

We got a Compaq Presario S6500NX from a friend who had upgraded to another computer and we can't get it to work. It ran fine before he brought it to us, however, once we got it here and tried to power it up it wouldn't start at all.

On the power supply in the back the green light blinks and clicks rapidly when the cord is plugged in, and pressing the power button does nothing at all.

Interestingly, a few minutes ago I took it out of storage, (we got the computer months ago and gave up when we couldn't get it running) plugged it in by itself and it powered up just fine, the fan turned on and everything! So I opened it up and cleaned out some of the dust (I didn't have it plugged into a monitor or anything, I just wanted to see if it was still doing the same thing it had months ago) and, lo and behold, when I tried to turn it on again with everything plugged in, I got the blinking/clicking green light and no power up.

What could be the problem here? I know the whole thing isn't totally shot because it DID power up just fine a few minutes ago. But now we're back to the blinking clicking light (instead of the steady green glow that usually happens when the power supply cord is plugged in). It leads me to believe that something's loose, but I don't dare mess with the power supply box unless I know what I'm doing...

Another question is, if the power supply isn't fixable, would it be possible to replace it with the power supply ... Read more

A few months ago I bought a Dell 4700 off of a friend for $30. It worked great up until a few weeks ago. Everything was normal, I turned it off, but then the next day it would not turn on. Instead of the two normal green lights in the front, there was one orange one. Not blinking. I tried removing cards, RAM, CD and DVD Drives, and even replacing the hard drive. Nothing worked. I now believe it is either the motherboard or power supply causing trouble, but as much as I would like to, I barely have enough money for one. So I really need to know what's wrong before I spend any money. Any ideas?

I have a Dell Latitude E5250. When plugging in the AC adapter the only light that comes on is the power button light and it's blinking continuously. The other indicator lights are off. The system board has been replaced, no change. After the system board was replaced the battery indicator light came on and the battery charged, though the laptop would not power on when the power button was pressed. It would light up then go out.  I've removed the battery and AC adapter, held down the power button to discharge flea power, no change. Followed Dell TechDirect directions to remove the battery and CMOS battery, then insert the AC adapter and power on the laptop, no change. I've tried known good RAM. I've removed all components including the LCD cable, no change. When the AC adapter is installed the power button light blinks continuously, no pattern, no other indicator lights come on. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it's a video issue, bad Touch LCD?

I am new to this excellent forum and wondered if anyone out there could possibly help......

I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 Desktop PC. Several weeks ago I had a slow flashing amber power light, indicating a PSU or switch fault. Firstly I replaced the switch - made no difference. Then I replaced the PSU - The slow flsahing amber light has now changed to a blinking (very fast) GREEN light on the power button.

All of my research so far has suggested that this suggests the PC is in standby mode! But the PC isn't even switched on - no fans running etc. In desperation I have even plugged a USB mouse in to see if I can "wake" it up! I have a amber AUX_PWR light on the Motherboard which is on.

Nothing happens when I press the power button - no matter for how long I press it in!

Has anyone got any ideas?

Many Thanks in advance

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.

Try the following...

1. Take out (or take it off) the charger.
2. Next take out the battery
3. Now hold down power button for 20 seconds and then rinsert battery.
4. Now put it on the charger again

NOTE: Make sure charger is plugged into the main power supply (not an extension cord, surge protector, etc.)

Sometimes, when the device is not plugged in directly, it doesn't get the power it needs. Holding the power button, while you restart it, clears out the temporary ram (no it won't delete anything you have saved) and will give the device access to the ram it needs.

Hi Recently my Y580 started acting strange:While doing normal work it's rock stable and everything but when i turn on anything that demands high system performance (i.e. games) the whole system starts to go haywire - fps drop to minimal values, the power button led starts to blink and windows detects the computer as disconnected from the power supply. If i disconnect and reconnect the power adapter it works for a few seconds and goes crazy again. I have allready ordered a new power adapter since the old one is falling apart anyway but i wont get it till Tuesday.Any ideas are welcome - i feel comfortable about taking the whole machine apart if it helps. Now that i think of it i remember that the chasis shocked me once or twice recently - damaged power cable between power socket and motherboard? Thanks in advance

Answer:Y580 Blinking power button led and power supply turns off

How many watts is your power brick rated at? I had a similar issue when I used a brick from another laptop. It had the right voltage and the same plug, but it was delivering less power than the original one. When doing basic office stuff it was working fine and charging the battery, but when gaming it would work fine for 2 minutes and then display the same symptoms as your Y580.
Hopefully you ordered the right, more powerful brick. I think the right one is rated at 90W, but I'm not sure.

Hello I tried to install a power supply with my dell now I get a steady amber light after I removed the power supply since it had showed me an amber light. With the old power supply, I still get the steady amber light. I noticed that on the LED in the back, I got a yellowish amber colored light as well. With the new power supply it didn't have the exact four pin layout of my old one but had an eight pin layout that was seperated so that I could ease a four pin in with my computer. Did this blow out the motherboard? The major thing I did was remove the heatsink which had pins connected to it when I tried to install this video card but I noticed that some of the pins bent out of shape so I got a new heatsink only this time the heatsink I recieved has no pins. I installed the heatsink and tried to boot the pc but it won't boot only the fan spins and none of the indicator lights in the front turn on. Is the motherboard or processor dead? Thanks.

I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

my laptop battery light is flashing orange. I'm running Windows10.
I checked the battery health meter and the battery is 100% charged and the meter indicates that it is functioning normally. The laptop is only a few months old.

I saw another post that suggested rebooting the laptop with the cable unplugged. I'going to try that next.

As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 that has a stock 280 watt psu, I would like to upgrade this to a 550 watt psu. I know the computer uses a smaller form factor psu and because of that I am having a hard time finding a replacement.  Is there anyone who has done this, if so what was the model that fit?
I would love to hear any success stories.
Thank you in advance.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 755 Desktop power supply replacement.

The tower on the left is easy to do,  the Desktop you need to shoehorn an aux power supply inside by removing the Optical drive.  For the SFF and USFF this is completely Impossible.  The other issue is that Full size video cards will not fit into that case so the point is moot.

Is it a desktop or Laptop?

Dell desktops are well known to have dodgy power units (hardware) installed.

Have you tried a cold reboot to see what happens?.....If you continue to have power issues call the Dell customer support and they'll send you a new power supply (for desktop).

Not sure about the laptops though.

Answer:Portege M400: Power LED is Blinking Orange

This is called blinking code.
Write down the sequence of long and short flashs. It repeats after a longer pause.
In most cases the problem is related to power and charging. Try to use your notebook with AC adapter connected but removed battery. If the problem is solved replace the battery. If not you have to go to your local service partner because the problem occurs from systemboard.

Any help with this?

Answer:Xps 8900 power button blinking orange

Try this:

Power off and remove power cable from rear of PC, not just from the wall
Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
Reconnect power cable to rear of PC
See if it boots now with only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected

If that doesn't help and you purchased it directly from Dell, contact Dell Support right away. Within the first 30 days from invoice date (not delivery date) you can send it back. Then order another one from their sales site.
If you purchased it from a "Big Box" store, take it back to the store and exchange it for another system.

Answer:orange power light

Hi HitDat,
Thanks for writing to us. Do you see green light on the PSU at the rear side? Ensure the power cable is plugged in properly as well as the PSU connector on the motherboard is tightly secured. Re-seat the memory modules one by one and try with one module at a time and check. Regarding the data on hard drive, we would suggest to take the drive to a local store and get it backed up, or you can try the HD on another machine if possible and if it recognizes, you can back up the same.

Pressing it again only produces the steady blinking light. I have some important work on it that I need to transfer to my laptop so if anyone can help me, I'd be very grateful.
Are there any 'Beeps'?
A blinking amber power button light, usually indicates a power supply issue.
Try installing a known working power supply to see if this makes a difference.
The Dimension 5000 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply, most standard ATX power supplies with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with, or without the on/off switch can be used, a power supply with two SATA power connectors is needed. You should be able to buy a replacement power supply from a local or online computer store.
Regards to transferring the important files to your laptop, you could use the following:
Remove the hard drive and use an USB adaptor similar to THIS and attach the hard drive to a USB port of your laptop and transfer the files to the laptop.

As I understand, the blinking LED is similar to the Post beeps that occur if you have a small speaker attached to you motherboard.  In theory the blink pattern should provide an indicator as to the cause of the problem.  Would it be possible for you to note down the blink pattern ? Or does it just blink orange all the time ?

Hello, the last weeks I am experiencing this problem.- The notebook turns on without any problems whether the battery is connected or not.- The battery seems to have a 2% charge (windows reports so)- If I remove the AC while battery is connected, computer looses power and turns off.- Last week Windows was reporting "not charging" while this week it reports as charging but the percentage is not increasing.- Whether the PC is on or off, the power LED shows up the same pattern. It is blinking orange and white non-stop.- Tried other solutions from this forum like removing battery and AC and pressing power button to drain all power, replugging the AC and battery, etc.- None of these solutions actually did not change anything.  HP G62-b95ev - Windows 7 x64

I have a circa 2005 Dimension desktop that is starting to have issues powering up and booting on a "cold start", and wanted to confirm this is something that can be fixed by just installing a new power supply.
System is presently running Windows 7, and has been upgraded over the years with memory & disk drives, and otherwise works fine. Lately when I try to start the PC in the morning after it's been shutdown overnight, it acts as if the power is failing during boot up. The first attempt won't even boot into the BIOS. Simply unplugging the main power and then switching it back on again will get you further into the process each time; i.e., at try #2, BIOS will load, but when you exit BIOS and attempt to load Windows, it will power down. If I keep repeating this process (try #3, #4 and beyond), Windows will eventually get me to its startup repair & diagnostics mode, and will let me login to Windows 7.
Seems that the power supply may need some run time to warm itself up & stabilize before it can supply enough power to support all the electrical loads that occur during boot. Also, If I shutdown the PC in Windows, I can fire it right back up with no issues as long as I do that within 30 minutes of shutting it down.
Thoughts? Does this sound like a simple swap in a new PS fix?

Hi Everyone,
I apologise if this has been asked previously, but i wasn't 100% clear in the other answers to this,
I have a Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop (not slim), purchased in Jan 2015. It has an intel core i5 4460 cpu and an INVIDIA Geforce GT 705 graphic card, 16gig DDR3 ram,
It has always run very quite, but just recently (within the last couple of weeks) i have noticed it making more sound then normal, it's soft but a constant high pitched sound which appears to be coming from the stock 300w psu,
If i wanted to change the psu, what make and model would be compatable?, sorry, but i am not really savy with voltages and figures etc, that is why i have asked purely for a make and model number that has been used in this model before, and would work,
From what i have read on this forum, a few people seem to have had issues with the stock psu after a period of time. Any recommendations would be greatfully appreciated, especially from users of the Inspiron that have upgraded their psu,

Thanks Again,
Mr Anthony

1. Plug the computer into a power strip that has an on/off switch. Turn the power strip on. Press the computer power on button to start as normal, but after after one second turn off the power strip switch just long enough for the fans on the computer to slow down, but the amber computer led doesn't turn off and then turn the power strip switch back on. Computer should start and run fine. Computer typically can be shut down for up to 5 minutes and restarted normally--any longer and you have to sue the power strip power switch routine again.Click to expand...

My Dimension 8200 turned off suddenly with no warning today. It just..died. Annoyed, I turned it back on--tried to at least. The fan still whirled, the CD-ROM drive still spun. The power button, though, glowed a hellish orange where green once shone. Then it sat there and nothing else happened. It didn't boot. The optical mouse light didn't flash. The keyboard lights didn't flash. Nothing.

This has happened before, so I wasn't too concerned. Last time, I panicked for a few minutes and it irrationally and suddenly came back to life as if nothing happened. That was about a year ago or so. This time, though, it's been two hours already and no miracle.

I've read through several threads about similar problems here and at Dell, but I don't want to believe that my motherboard or power supply is gone. Somehow, there MUST be another way. Sob. If anyone has some desperate advice for a desperate guy, please don't hesitate to grace me with a reply. Thank you so much.

Try a new signal cable from PC to monitor. If no change, try a new graphics card.If still no change, test the hard drive with "Seagate SeaTools for DOS".Click the "Download" tab here: download is an ISO file, so you'll also need to install "IMGBurn" from here: IMGBurn to create a CD from the ISO file, then boot your faulty computer from it. The testing program will open. Select the hard drive and test it. If it fails the test you need to replace the hard drive. If hard drive passes the test it's okay, so test the RAM modules with "Memtest86" which is also an ISO file, so you need to create a CD from that too:

I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." I've had Windows 8 sitting around since February, and got around to installing it yesterday. So far all is well, except for when I shut my computer off the power LED will keep flashing. At first I thought my computer was just in sleep mode, but after hitting a couple keys that was not the case. Is there a setting some where that would cause this. I know it's a minor issue but damn that LED is bright.

As a test you could try turning Fast Startup off, Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 8
The Fast Startup uses a hybrid sleep mode and that may be why your power LED is blinking.

I have a dell mini 10v that uses windows xp. week before last i noticed that my computer's power light was blinking red. what could be causing this problem? when I touch the charger, ever so lightly, or barely touch the pc, the computer will power off. after jiggling the wire to the charger, the power light comes back on, and is blinking red. sometimes i do not even have to touch the pc, it powers off on its own.

i then have to press the power button for the computer to start up.

i was told i needed a new charger, which i purchased, but the power light is still blinking red. i went to the power option and my battery is at 55% and does not change. what is causing this? do I need a new battery? i checked to see if my power option was set on stand by. it was and so i changed it, but the light is still blinking red. does anybody have any suggestions?

i was told t remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstall, but i cringe at having to do that. the screws in the back are so small i am not sure i can even get the panel out, but if i have to, then i will.

what should i do? thanks for the help

If I want to turn it on, the power light turns into an orange dot...

If its caused by the emty RTC Battery, Where can I order a new one (In Europe?)

Answer:Satellite Pro 2100 - Power light turns into an orange dot

Normally this has nothing to do with a empty RTC battery. In this case you would only get an error message about a low CMOS battery or something else but the notebook would boot properly.

In your case I assume it?s a hardware problem. Have you already tried removing the battery and AC/DC adaptor for some hours or over night? Sometimes this helps?

Otherwise it would be great to get professional help form an authorized service provider. They can diagnose the notebook and exchange the faulty hardware parts.

Power light is white, I have always seen white. Power is getting to the computer (runs normally). Battery does charge. When I remove the battery the power light goes to white. When I put the battery back in the power light goes to orange. Power supply problem? Battery problem? Do I need to bleed the power from the computer(forgot how)?

Answer:Newer Toshiba Laptop - Power Light is Orange

Take out charger, then battery, and hold down power button for 20 seconds, insert battery, then plug back in charger

I have a Satelite 1415-S173 that won't boot.
The only signs of life is the blinking power light.
The lights flash in this pattern 3-3-2 3-3-2 3-3-2

I have changed out everything memory, hard drive etc.

Answer:What does this blinking power light pattern mean?

When the notebook has a problem with power supply (board electronic), sends hexadecimal code.
In your case there are two problems:
- To know what this code means you must know exactly how to read this code. The binary code must be converted to the hexadecimal code and then you could compare the code with the description in the maintenance manual.
- Maintenance manual is not a public document.

While the laptop was shutting down and doing updates, the power light was blinking and I press it and doesn't respond. The quickplay buttons wont respond either. I took the battery out to turn it completely off. Now the laptop won't turn on at all. Yes the battery light does display. I've spent a lot of money on this thing, RAM because it only had 1 GB of Ram, It needed a new Battery and High Quality Thermal Pads to keep the GPU Cooler.

Now that it's summer, my T420 is back to not booting if it doesn't feel like it. As before, I press the power button, and instead of doing anything, the power light starts flashing, one second on, one second off, forever or until I get bored and pull the battery out for a second or two. I've gone through all the threads even vaguely related to it, which are full of all sorts of weird fixes that don't work for me  (I haven't tried the eye of newt ones yet), but none of them answers the obvious question: What condition does the flashing power light signal? It's obviously something that the firmware or hardware is designed to do under a specific set of circumstances, but so far no one (least of all from Lenovo) has mentioned what they are. I've tried taking it to the repair shop (MicroCenter), but the problem is that it never shows the problem at the repair shop.   It seems like if it's in a perfectly temperature and humidity controlled space for a long time, like your average repair shop, the problem goes away.  Or it used to, anyway.  Since I haven't found a set of specific conditions that consistently trigger the problem, I can't show it to the shop. There are a lot of things I like about the T420.  But I can't deal with a laptop that only works when it feels like it, and which has a problem that a lot of people share but the manufacturer isn't helpful with, so I think my next one (i.e., after I give up on this one) will ... I have an N22 chromebook that when plugged into a known good power adapter, the charging light blinks amber.  Nothing appears on the screen, so it appears to be dead.  Pressing power does nothing.  Can anyone recommend something for me to try to revive, or is this unit done for?

Answer:My won't open and the power light is blinking red

Am I to assume that you have successfully installed Windows XP (your other post)?
What software are you installing and after how much time does it tur off?
Did you review the power settings (under screen saver) after you installed Windows?
Also, you never gave any specs on your computer (aside from the o/s) what kind of PC do you have, how old is it?

Yo, this is my first post : ) I searched for this topic, but my question is pretty specific...

Yesterday i was on my computer and all was well, except my sound wasn't working. i don' thave a sound card so it's directly connected to my motherboard - that was annoying, but then my keyboard backlight kept blinking on and off and started entering in a lot of typing in my computer. They keyboard problem might be an isolated issue though cause it's given me problems before.

Well it didn't look like any immdediate danger so i went to sleep. This morning though, my computer wouldn't start up... the power light was (and is still) blinking on and off when it's plugged in. I tried switiching out a different cable, a different wall plug, and waiting a lot, etc. Well it's definitely the PSU - but i'm not sure if that's it.

I want to go get it repaired cause i'm a noodle amed choir girl with no hardware experience, but i don't know if i should just get the psu replaced or should i look at a new motherboard too? the sound wasn't working yesterday, and i'm not sure about the keyboard incident, but it'ss just started giving me all this trouble.

Also, my setup is really old, and kinda crappy. I have a Sony Vaio. I'm inexperienced with hardware issues so bare with me if some of this is not necessary. The PSU wattage is like 250, and seems to me, very weak. i dont' know the details about my mothereboard, bu... Read more

Answer:PSU power light blinking...dead?

There really is no way to be absolutely sure as to what the problem is. The PS is a good place to start.

A friend gave me an old switch he had found, however it seems to be broken.
It's a d-link des-3526 managed 24-port switch.

The power light is blinking, and it does not have any lights light up when cables are plugged in, neither on the computers network card or on the switch.

The network cable is good, it works with a different switch, and I have tried using a different power cord.

Any way to get this working?

Answer:Switch Power light Blinking

Anything on the serial console?

Assuming the blinking indicates a fault, it's probably not something you're going to be able to repair yourself, but the console may indicate what the fault is.

Hello to the HP community. I must warn you all, this is a long thread and is potentially confusing, so only read this if you're interested in giving feedback. I am here today to not ask a question, but to share with you my confusion on your Pavilion desktop PCs. I've looked at the technical specifications for many of the Pavilion desktops, including my own, and I simply can't understand one thing; where do you get your PSU power ratings from? I currently have a Pavilion 500-319na:'s a good computer, powerful in most areas although the GPU isn't, so I'm looking to upgrade it. The first thing I check before I upgrade parts, and hopefully others do too, is the PSU's power rating. And this is where my problem lies. Firstly, your website states that for my PC, and others, it's an external power adapter. It simply isn't, as it's inside of the PC. I've seen in many discussions that this has confused people, including myself. And secondly, your website states that for many of the Pavilion PCs, including mine, the PSU is rated at 180W. Let me tell you why I believe is wrong: The PSU that comes with my PC, and presumably other Pavilions too, has four power outputs: 3.3V (12A) and 5.08V (10A) outputs, 'limited' at 70W. Then there are 12Va (7A) and 12Vb (10A) outputs. These apparently produce 180W. First of all, the 3.3V and 5.08V outputs can't be limited to 70W, in theory. This is because, using the equation...
