Lock-ups and crashes in a game

Question: Lock-ups and crashes in a game

Hello, after purchasing a new PC, I can no longer play a game. The game in question is Medal of Honor Allied Assault, a very old game now.

I am running:

Windows XP
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB SATA-II 16MB Cache
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB)
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

The problem is that I cannot run the game for more than 30 minutes without it locking up and giving me a system memory error:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/pk89/error.jpg
As soon as I start the game I get frequent lock-ups, where the game basically ceases for around 0.2/0.5 seconds. These lock-ups increase in frequency and length until finally the game crashes, with a repeating audio of whatever was playing as it crashed - like a skipping record.
If you know about the "lagometer" in games, I have taken pictures of the lagometer, showing the green line disturbance that occurs at each lock-up. You can see that the first picture shows the minimal disturbance at the beginning of the session, and the last shows the frequent lock-ups close to crashing.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y221/pk89/error2.jpg

I enjoy playing this game competitively, so this is a great annoyance to me.

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Lock-ups and crashes in a game

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lock-ups and crashes in a game

Try to reset your virtual memory setting.
The file should be a fixed size so that it does not get fragmented, with minimum and maximum set the same
The file should be 2.5 times the size of RAM (or some other multiple)
Go To Start,Control Panel,System,Advanced, under the settings tab select advanced, and on the bottom under Virtual memory settings you can change it to what it needs to be. You can also let your system try to run it but that is only if nothing else works.

I'll keep this short and sweet because I know how busy you guys are.
I built a gaming computer from scratch, there were a lot of problems even getting it working initially this time, as compared to the last one I built that I had zero problems with ever.
I am getting a lot of BSOD's, games freeze and crash, movies freeze and crash, and streaming does too. In addition, I am getting an error occasionally with the GPU that tells me it has timed out and reset the GPU. I used the windows recommended fix for this and set the response timeout time to 8 seconds, since I have done so I have only seen this problem once. I was wondering if I had too little power for my system, but I have seen threads with similar problems that have plenty of power. I followed the instructions to the best of my ability, and you should find all of the information you have asked for below. Please don't hesitate to ask for anything else you may need. I truly appreciate what you guys are doing here for so many people.

IMO, the suggested fixes for the TDR timeout of the video card only conceals the problem - it doesn't fix it.If the card is timing out, then fixing the cause of the timeout is preferable (IMO) to just lengthening the timeout. Unfortunately it appears that the system has pirated software. Please get a legitimate copy installed and we'll be glad to help. Here's suggestions on how to ensure that your version is legitimate:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuinePlease be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.As a courtesy, I will offer an analysis of your issues using the reports you provided.I will not answer any questions about the analysis until the system is made legitimate. If you do make it legitimate, please submit a new set of reports for us to check.Just FYI, sometimes the owner won't know about this.  So here's 2 scenarios that might ring a bell:- if they had a "friend" help with the computer - and the "friend" installed a pirated copy.- or they used a copy that they had from another OEM computer.  The OEM license is tied to the hardware that it came from - so you can't just use it on another system (that means that it's pirated). And here's the analysis... I've been haveing some trouble with either game crashes or full bluescreen (error 101).
I WAS useing twin GeForce 9600GTs in SLI, I recently upgraded to a HD 7870.
The problem did not change, suggesting that video drivers are not the source... Although altering the drivers with the 9600GTs did seem to effect if the game crashed or full bluescreen crash.
So basicly, the PC works fine untill I play a game (high end and/or minecraft... simple games do not trigger it) at that point, you are on borrowed time. Around 15-120 min. into gameplay, either the game will crash (fatal error bug or no bug report) OR the PC will freeze briefly followed by a blue screen BCCode 101. (Windows 7 64)

I did a simple RAM check, but I did not leave it running for long. I have 3 sticks of 2GB in there, and haveing removed one at a time did not effect the problem. (IE: I took out each stick, leaveing 2 in for a quick and easy method to find a possable faulty RAM chip).

Thus far, it would seem that the CPU in at haveing timeing issues with a core.
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+ 3.2 GHz

Could it be overheating? Everything seems to work fine untill I start a game, then it crashes out roughly 30 min into playing. I'm consitering removeing the heat sink, reapplying the thermal paste, and checking if that has any effect. This much I am qualified to do; but is there a way to monitor processor heat levels durring gameplay (I'm sure standard bios heat checks would not show problems). ... Read more

About 3-4 months ago, my uncle placed a GeForce 9500GT video card. It worked nice for games like Dekaron,Rappelz,Oblivion but just about a week ago it crashed on COD2. I thought it was normal but it happened on Left 4 dead too. I started to get worried and thought it was normal but then it kept on crashing on Portal(1st stage, at around 20-30 seconds on the timer) and almost any game i borrow from my friends. It crashed on Warcraft 3, Overlord, Drift City(only in Undercity Mission). Im kinda worried now maybe you guys can help me.

It crashes and sometimes the sound loops but sometimes it doesnt. Im not sure if it's only the monitor because some of my games cant be shut by using ALT F4 and i cant check if it shuts down well. When i unplug, plug and turn it on, there are no warnings or things that say it recovered from an error. It just starts normally. Some people say i have to upgrade my Video card driver but im worried because when i installed a driver on my Laptop , i couldnt turn it on. SO WHAT DO I DO?

If any of you have a radeon card (might apply to nvidia cards too) and you have been experiencing random crashes to desktop / reboots / VPU Recover windows ...Go into you r bios and change the vid card core voltage to 1.7v, if 1.7 doesnt fucntion, use 1.8. That should fix 95% of all of you crashing problems.

I had tried everything to fix these crashes, formatting HD, reinstalling windows...I even bought a new power supply. None of it worked but since i switched to 1.7v I have had no problems in any games and no crashes at all. It was set to the default 1.64v unbeknownst to be.

Anyways if youve tried everything like me...give it a try I think that it will fix it.

Answer:A FIX for random game crashes and Vid Card crashes!

Ummmmmmmmm... I'm sceptical... I think voltages generally aren't meant to be messed with... if you do, just know that you may run the risk of frying your card...
...right??? not all cards run on the same voltage, and if it's supposed to run on something lower, it could get fried, right?? and then if it's supposed to run higher than that, MAYBE some bugs would get fixed, but wouldn't the card also run slower??

Which radeon card do you have anyway?

EDIT actually, it looks like the standard voltage for AGP cards is 1.5v... upping the voltage will (I believe) up performance a little, as well as heat generated. Too high a voltage, however, will result in BSODs and the like.

Question: Game Lock Up

Ok i will try to explain all this in one go. i have microsoft flight sim 2004 just installed, The problem been is that after so long say 1, 2 mins it just locks up and i have to restart my computer from the restart button. In this game, it gives you a diagnostic tool wich allows you to boot the game in safe mode and play it, to see if there is a hardware fault, I did this and it didnt freeze or hang. But as soon i i start it the proper way its back to it hanging and freezing. So this is suggesting that i have a hardware fault. What does anyone think can be the problem, I run other games and dont have this problem, my card is a Geforce Fx 5900 and i have all the latest driver and direct x installed. My OS Is XP Home with service pack 2 and i have 512 ddr Amd 2500 processer.

Have you simply tried reinstalling the game?

Question: 2nd Game Lock Ups

Hey, really not sure where to put this but this has been bugging me for a while now and I should really see if I can get some help to fix it. Quite awkward to explain the problem but ill give it a try;

If I start up my computer, I can then load up any game that I have with no worries and play for as long as I want, however when I then close the game, and try to open up another game (could be the same game again) then my computer will attempt to start it, and lockup on a black screen with the loading cursor not spinning requiring a system restart.

At first I thought it was to do with steam as it appeared to be only steam games which did it, but it does seem to do this with non-steam games too (However for some reason it does not with starcraft 2). So this has really been getting annoying having to restart if I want to change game.

Any help on this problem, or things that you could need me to post up?

Oh and I have done various memory, CPU and GPU hardware tests and nothing seems to be wrong, and this is with the latest drivers and a clean windows install so I really dont understand what could be causing it.

Thanks

So recently I got some new ram and a new BFG 8800GT... I noticed when playing games like NFS Most wanted and Call Of Jaurez that my computer will lock up and freeze and I'll have to restart, I'm not sure if this problem is caused by the new video card or the new ram [its kingston valueram, I have it overclocked just a bit, is any overclocking too much for valueram?]

I heard there was a bad batch of 8800GTs, so I thought it could be that? I picked this one up earlier this month.

More info:

My 8800GT is overclocked to 679/979.

Sometimes when it locks up in Most Wanted it will recover, but graphics and textures will be misplaced, lots of graphical glitches, but when I minimize the game and go back into it all the graphics are fine again.

I recently had some ram slot troubles, certain slots not working, but I took the motherboard out of the case and reset it in there and now all the slots will work.

Anyways, thanks in advance, I want to get some advice before I crack my computer open.

About 2 weeks ago, my computer began experiencing random lock ups. When this occurs, i generally retain sound and mouse control for a brief period (anywhere from 5-30 seconds), after which the sound quits and the mouse freezes. As soon as this begins, I lost all control, and the only way I can fix the problem is to power off my system.

This almost always occurs when playing a full screen game... Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and World of Warcraft in particular, but has happened to me once or twice while using just Windows Media Player, which is why I'm posting here instead of the gaming forum.

I'm running a Compaq SR1135CL, with an NVidia Geforce 5200 FX video card, a santa cruz turtle beach sound card, 1 GB of memory, and I have updated all the relavent drivers. I tried a partial system recovery (the one that preserves data and user files), but to no avail.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you in advance.

I'm having problems with web-enabled programs and IE 6 locking up. I used to go weeks without rebooting (Win2K Pro w/ all updates)--now it's almost daily. I use AVG and Trend Micro for AV, TDS for trojans, and Segate software firewall behind a DSL router. No viruses found, Spybot S&D and Adaware clean. Before I start thinking about an OS reinstall I'd like to be sure the problem isn't being caused by spyware or something undetected by my AV. The following HJT log as been run through your analyser.

Thanks

Hope this is allowed here...Soldier of Forune Special Edition...haven't played it for a while, tried today and it says the violence lock has been activated so I can't play the full game with gore. I am the only adult in the house and have never "locked" the violence button. I am very adult (44!) if not mature and have tried all my usual passwords, despite being sure I have never applied the violence lock. Any ideas??

Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. Hello.
This is my first time. I have searched the postings to find a similar problem/solution to no avail so here goes.
I recently upgraded my RAM from 32Mb EDO to 128Mb SDRAM, which was done successfully and picked up on the reboot.
Since then my son has been unable to play Need For Speed 111 Hot Pursuit. Similar cd rom games still work and there are no other system problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times. It always gets to the menu from either auto run or the desk top shortcut. The other menu items are ok but when you hit the play button it immediately goes to a blank screen and locks the pc up without error messages. CTRL ALT DELETE doesn't work and I have to reboot. I have tried the game's tech help and at their suggestion upgraded DirectX from version 5 to 8a and checked some settings with no result obviously. I have also exchanged the 128Mb module with the retailer for another one in case there was a fault. I can't think of anything else. Any ideas would be appreciated.

First off you should probably place another fan in the case, or another one on the graphics card. Your other temperatures appear to be normal. I was having issues like this awhile back. Try updating your graphics card driver, but use forceware. Here is the link for your card- http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html . Hope this helps!

I have been using my P10-792 even since I bought it 3 year ago. There?s been a battery waning box that pops up on my screen (sometimes) saying that I should replace the wrong inserted battery and restart my computer. There?s also a mouse touch pad issue. It touchpad doesn?t respond well to my commands while trying to move the pointer.

The battery-warning message usually comes along with the touch pad malfunction. I have to press ?esc? several times to restore the touchpad back to normality and close the process application ?Btrychkr.exe? under the CTRL+ALT+DEL menu to make the waning box go away.

But the major and most recently problem are the lockups, especially when running programs that require high video processing such as 3D games and DVDs. The screen freezes for several seconds before it comes ?back to life?. This is sometimes followed by a sudden shut down.

Finally, when I try to turn it on, it doesn?t even get to load windows before it shuts down again, and so on. So I have to wait several minutes before pushing the ?on? button again. Now we have reached a critical situation where the computer won?t last more than 10 minutes before it automatically shuts down without any previous notice. There are no error messages so I cannot see what the cause of the problem is. (Battery? Overheating?)

It?s also important to notice that a friend of mine with a P10 series also had these same problems and eventually had to buy a new one because the laptop got just ou... Read more

Answer:Satellite P10-792 lock ups / crashes and battery

Hi

You use you notebook since 3 years. Did you replace the battery during this 3years?
No? I think it would be a nice idea to change the battery.
Usually after about 500 times of charging and discharging procedures the battery performance going down and the life time decreases?

Additional during these 3 years the notebook should be cleaned. The fans suck the dirt and dust and sometime the cooling modules cannot rotate with full performance and cannot cool the CPU and other devices.
Of course, the overheating could be a reason for your shut down problems?

It sounds like you haven?t much experience? so I think someone with more experience (technician) should clean the notebooks cooling modules?

Hello,
Newbie here. I am currently running a Dell Inspiron One all in one touch screen computer with the wireless keyboard. Every time I press the caps lock button it crashes my computer and gives me the blue screen of death. I did notice that I can turn the caps lock on and off with the touch screen keyboard with no issues. Also I can turn the caps lock on with the touch screen key board and then turn the caps lock off with the wireless keyboard with no issues. So it seems to cause this only when the caps lock key is turned on from the wireless keyboard. Tried searching for other problems like this but no luck.

Model: Inspiron 2305
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 610e Processor 2.40GHz
RAM: 4.00GB (3.75GB usable)
System type: 64 bit operating system

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Computer crashes when I press the caps lock key

Try another keyboard and see if the BOSD happens again. Or there is a driver conflict somewhere.

I know that this is a lot to ask in one thread but they all do relate (I think ) I spotted a program listed in program fills that I have never seen before: Authentium. It had a file listed in it as: AuthFw.exe. When I Googled that it led me to a link to Tech Support Guy were member LOgic posted the following post: "As of late My computer has begun to lock up for no apparent reason. What happens is the following. When i go to click on any program none of them respond. I cant alt ctrl delete cause that window doesnt come up. I then click on the start menu and all the icons for the window update and microsoft update and such are not there as if the it doesnt recognize what program to read them with. I then proceed to restart my computer And The old menu pops up. As in not the 3 big red buttons that confirm log out, turn off and restart but a grey box that gives me the same options plus asking me if i want it to hibernate or stand by. Then when the computer is turning of normally it gives a big blue screen saying " windows is shutting down" But what happened when this computer locks up is that a logo of home edition appears in a small grey box and tells me its shutting down. Is my computer going into some kind of safe mode on its own? Every time i leave the computer own on its own?If someone can please help me with this problem it would be great."

Answer:System lock ups, crashes and unable to install updates

First thing you should do is turn off the System restore feature in WIndows XP, then restart your machine in Safe Mode with networking.

To turn off System restore, right click my computer on the desktop or start menu and choose properties. Go to System restore tab and check the box that says Turn off system restore.

To start in safe mode you need to hit F8 after the BIOS screen comes up but before the Windows XP splash screen.

Second, install and run scans from Spybot Search & Destroy, SpyBlaster and Ad-Aware Se.

I'm running xp home sp2, and explorer.exe, DrWatsonPostmordemDebugger, AIM, & MSN crash whenever I try to run a game. So recently I did a non-destructive format, so that put me back on sp1. So when it was finished, I ran the game and it worked perfectly. Then came the updates... It still worked fine until last nights updates, I know one of these things is causing the error, since I didnt install anything new between now and last night. Thanks to the update history on Microsoft, I got the list of the programs that were installed. Could you guys look at it and tell me if theres a known error with any of these updates? I'm posting Tuesday's also because it's mainly full of security updates, and I remember reading something that said those updates could be the problem. If you guys need any more info, just post and I'll get it for you.

Let's try looking at these 2 sets of reports:1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.By default it'll be a .zip file located on your DesktopSimply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there. If it doesn't work for you, then please try this:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/2)  Please do the following:- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."- save the file as Admin.evtx- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Question: Game crashes

I just finished building my custom gaming pc, my connections are all right and my PCs temp is low but whenever I try to play Battlefield 1942 or Homeworld 2 it works perfectly for about a minute then either locks up, restarts my system or goes to a blue screen that occasionly has info on it that is only up for about a second so I don't have time to read it. All my drivers are up to date so what could be the problem? Any help would be greatly apriciated. Thanks. PS all my system specs are on my profile.

Answer:Game crashes

Nice System ...You're running Windows XP right?

Also has the system had a different video card in it before this one?

Check for IRQ conflicts(Right Click on My computer, click Properties, Hardware Tab, Device Manager)

Couple other things, do you have the latest AGP driver for that motherboard?

And perhaps try setting your AGP to 4x instead of 8x...heard of some issues with certain mobos and the 9800XT at 8x..

Anyway, it came with some game "Joint Operations" , i can play the game offline fine, no problems, when i go online, after a minute of playing, my computer freezes, i cant do anything, the little pc loading light on the box isnt flashing, so i have to restart.
The same thing is happening with the BF2 demo, i can play it offline, but when i play online, freezes.
However when i play guild wars online, no problems.
Can anyone help me?

To be sure, DL and install both Adaware and Spybot S&D.
Before you run those scans, use the update-function in both programs first.

Have you checked the temperature of your mobo? Are all the fans in your PC working, especially those on CPU and graphics card?

Is your PSU strong enough for whatever you attach onto it?

This is the 12.0GB RAM 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD Y40  I have installed a few games on this supposed "gaming" laptop and every single one crashes about 3 mins in. I have set them all to "High Performance" in the AMD Catatalyst Control Center so they should all be running on AMD graphics, yet this computer can't handle any game I've tried even on low settings(Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mass Effect.)  Sometimes I'm able to open the Task Manager and close the non responsive game, other times the entire computer freezes and the only way to back out is turning it off with the power button. I just don't understand what's going on here. Is the graphics card kaput? I don't even know where to start trying to fix this I'm just incredibly dissapointed in this product :/

Question: XP Crashes game

Brief History:-

My PC worked fine. I buy a new game, Rally Sport Challenge.
It plays then crashes. I figure I need a Sound Blaster card.
I Bought one, Installed it and hey presto.. Problem fixed.

Days later I went to play Favourite my game (empire Earth), this plays for a while then crashes, either to desk top or to a system reboot.

Various people suggest that it is a driver issue.
So I down load the latest drivers installed them. Still no good. I try using XP's Compatability mode, still no good, I also tried formatting pc no good.

I rang the tech support line. After some suggestions (drivers etc) they gave up as the game is not listed as XP compatable on the box.

To my mind it had worked, so it should work. any ideas. This is very frustrating.

Latest attempt resulted in a memory error, some thing like tried writing to oxobf67400 and failed?

Things seem to be going from bad to worse.

I recently bought a new stick of 512mb (pc3200) double sided hynix ddr which is exactly the same as the stick already in my computer, same speed, same brand. my computer is: Abit KV7
Athlon xp 2500+
hynix 512mb ddr
geforce 4 mx 440
And ever since i put the new stick of ram in every time i go to play most of my games eg, doom3 and painkiller it comes up with a windows error and makes the game crash, but when i take the either of the sticks out and leave 1 remaining everything works fine. Since both the ram sticks are exactly the same i was thinking maybe there is something wrong with my motherboard but i dont know, someone please help.

30gig HD + 120gig HD
512mb 2700 DDR
DVD player
CDR-WR
SB Live 5.1
Geforce4 Ti4200
XP Pro

I did some parts swapping when I could. I have installed every new driver, XP is completely up to date. (just checked it again)
I even updated the BIOS on my mobo.

When I am running graphics programs (ie, photoshop, illustrator, macromedia, even 3d programs like 3dMAX) no problem.
The second I want to play a game (MOHAA, NOLF2, Marrowinds...etc.) I can play about 10-30min. then the systems crashes sometimes to the desktop sometimes it restarts the system.

I thought it might be my video card, but I swapped it with an old
ATI 7000 32mb card, and got the same results.

Next, I ran the memory check software from MS, thinking the ram was bad, but it didn't find anything.

Lastly I removed the sound card and used the sound off the mobo. still no luck!

Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:More XP game crashes

Maybe a heat issue? You're cranking the CPU with the games firing. I had that problem a while back so I took my covers off and pointed a kingsize fan right into the box and no more crashes. So I bought hardware to keep the box cooler. Also I had problems with Soundblaster in the past causing games to stutter, hiccup or just reset or crash to desktop. Make sure ya got their latest drivers. I've removed the soundblaster card and work off the on-board sound system that came with the Mobo.

Attached is my minidump folder, and the two files that were created by the guide in the sticky.

The problem I am having is that while playing only certain games, such as civ 5 or a sims game, (but in others like League of Legends or tf2 it doesn't), my computer will just crash outright, I don't even see the bluescreen on crash. My computer stays powered on but without any display output to the monitor. In addition when I restart I do get an error message saying that the error was a bluescreen.

I've attempted to check the event viewer for problems but their is nothing in it that helps me diagnose the problem. I went as far as reinstalling the os, disabling my raid 0 array, and still the problem persists after two fresh installations. I need some help determining the issue that's occurring.

when im playing a game it sometimes crashes onto "the blue screenof death" . then it starts up again and says it has recoverd from a unexpected shutdown and it has the option to solve the problem or leave it. i clicked the solve option and it came up with nothing. does anyone know why it is duiing it

Answer:In Game Crashes

Could you tell us what the BSOD message was. Generally they consist of 3 parts - a symbolic name (the name is all caps with _ between the words), a STOP Error (a long string of numbers that usually looks something like this - 0x0000007b and is followed by even more numbers and letters), and sometimes there's a filename pointing to where the error occurred.

Hi wart and welcome to TSF.

Can you download and run Speccy for me. Once the program has gathered the required information, go to the top of the Speccy window and do File>Publish Snapshop. Click Yes when prompted. Now copy and paste the URL address that it gives you to your next post.

Is this the only problem you are experiencing with your laptop?

Can you check you Device Manager for any warnings (yellow exclamation points) next to anything.
Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. In the Computer Management window, select 'Device Manager' on the left and look for any warning signs.

Answer:Any Game Crashes

1) dont type in all caps....its considered yelling and its somewhat hard to read. also, paragraphs and punctuation are our friends

2) boot into safe mode (tap f8 before windows starts and choose safe mode

3) right click on "my computer" select properties, hardware, device manager.

4) click the plus sign next to "display device", highlight all entries and delete them.

5) reboot into normal mode.

6) reinstall drivers.
if that doesnt work, then we need a little more information.

1) how much system RAM do you have?

2) give me an example of one game that is crashing

3) what is the EXACT (word for word) error message.

Question: Game Crashes

Hi all,Can I ask what causes a game to crash? I am aware of the fact that a number of reasons may be responsible but when other games run absolutely fine and this one crashes it seems weird. Can anyone educate me as to what happens when a game crashes?

Answer:Game Crashes

May get you thinking.More often than not, today's software is bloated. Not to keep bagging on Microsoft, but with each new version of Windows, and Games software, millions of lines of code get added. The more lines of code, the more likely chance of bugs. You can either say that software companies add more features to software in order to sell new versions of it, or that we users keep demanding more. Either way, many of us try to run that bloated software on the ultra-cheap PCs available today. Well, those PCs are cheap because the hardware inside them isn't top-quality, further increasing the chance of crashes. Furthermore, PC manufacturers didn't have reliability in mind when they started this wild and crazy ride that's been dubbed the PC revolution. The goal has always been to produce PCs that the average person can afford, not to create super machines that are as stable as mainframe computers. It's a trade-off. Do you want a PC that crashes now and again or one that costs many thousands of pounds? Another reason why PCs crash is DLLssssssssssss incompatibility. This problem is so prevalent that the term "DLL Hell" has become commonplace. DLLs (dynamic link libraries) are small programs that larger programs rely on in order to accomplish tasks. Often, a DLL is shared among many applications. Microsoft Word, and Excel, for example, would use the same DLL to send documents to the printer. When you install new software, it can potentially overwrite a necessary DLL with an olde... Read more

Question: 3D Game Crashes

Hello wonderful forum people

I have a quite strange problem with my games which is sad because I really enjoy playing. I have read a lot of threads on similar subjects but unfortunatley not found any sollution to my problem.

The computer
I have a Epox 4PLA3I mb with a Celeron 2,4GHz processor and 2x256MB ram DDR 3200 from Kingston. My grapics card is a Gecube Radeon 9550GT. I run on 400W and I do not have any additional cooling but the fans that came with the case and processor.

The problem
The problem is that any 3d games (no need to make a list, any games except Civ 3 and solitaire) crashes randomly. The graphics just freezes while the sound keeps on playing and the only thing to do is to reset the computer. sometimes the game crashes after half an hour and sometimes after 5 minutes (always in propotion to the latest save it seems) With the ATI Catalyst I get an error message that the graphics accelerator has been reset and then I can continue playing untill it freezes the third time, Everytime It works three times! Then it says graphics hardware could not be reset please restart the computer.

The troubleshooting
I have tried quite a nuber of changes to fix this but nothing has worked. I tried changing the Graphics card to an old Hercules 64Mb, I tried changing the memory and run on either of the two 256 memories, I've tried a lot of different settings, AGP apperture size, AGP speed, Fast Write, DIMM voltage, AGP voltage. I have tried uppgrading all... Read more

Question: game crashes, etc

i always get a memory error when playing any game, at all.
not the blue screen, the one where it says "send error report".
next time it happens i can take a screenshot if its needed.

i was going to format my HD but i wanted to find out the cause of these errors.
someone mentioned it could be the physical memory, maybe one of the sticks are dead. i took one out, played something and it crashed about 5-10 minutes into the game. i put that one back in an took the other one out, same deal.

the system is
Athlon 64bit 3000+
512x2 ram (pc2700 or pc3200, i cant remember)
120GB SATA HD
GeForce 6800GT 256ram

any suggestions or help will be appreciated. thanks

Answer:game crashes, etc

I found this on somewhere else after searching all day. i going to try it when i get hom hopefully it will work.

My card is 6600 but i think its on same chipset as 6800.

I did have a problem with random freezing mainly noticed in FarCry (very card stressful) and when attempting to bench in '03

Yes I know there have been several threads but no one has posted a concrete solution. This worked for me and ALOT of other people in the OCUK forum.

First of all I thought heat, then I thought power related. However after lots of testing and forum posts it turns out it was Fast Writes being enabled causing it. I cant take credit but it definitly fixed the problem.

Interestingly disabling it in bios did not disable it in windows and I had to disable it using RivaTuner.Download Here

Also instersetingly for people not experiancing this, disabling Fast Writes appears to allow higher overclocks for people using all types of 6800s.

This appears to be a problem specifically on the nforce3 150/250/Pro/non-pro chipset ironically (as far as we know).

The problem has been posted by people in various places but its never been categorically fixed to my knowledge anyway (I did lots of googling believe me!). So I felt it best to post as a FYI for people.Click to expand...

Hope this helps.

Question: Game Crashes

I'm sure this has been talked about quite a bit but I can't seem to find any fix for my issue that works for me.

Every game I have crashes. It doesn't happen all the time and it is completely random. It doesn't crash when I'm not playing a game. When it crashes my game the last sound I heard just continuously loops and it won't let me alt+tab or ctrl+alt+del and I have to do a hard reset. This didn't happen with Vista 32 bit with the same hardware.

I love 64 bit Vista and I would really hate to have to go back to 32 bit if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

System Specs

OS: Vista Ultimate x64

Answer:Game Crashes

If you are using a 32 Bit version game. Then install the game in the X86 Folder. This will Give the 32 Interface for the game.

Question: Game Crashes

My games crash at random times, and I've had this happen in more than one game so it's not a problem with a specific program. My monitor gets a blank screen and reads "No signal" and I'm forced to restart my computer for it to work again. I'm using Windows XP SP3.

It only has this crash when I play games.

Answer:Game Crashes

The game crashes is nothing but the corruption of files...

Question: PC Crashes In-Game

Hi,

I hope someone here can help me.

I'm having problems with my pc, with it crashing whilst playing games. I don't know what information you need or any ways of testing/recording things but hopefully you can help me :)

Thanks for any help I receive

Adam

Answer:PC Crashes In-Game

If it only happens with games that need a lot of resourses then it might be a grafic card or driver issue. Alternatively the cooling system on you grafic card might need to be cleaned.

If you could give your pc spec's and what type of game are causing the problem.

Hey, everyone. I've been having the same problem for more than 8 months and cant seem to find a solution.

Backround: bought counter-strike source, was running it with a ati 9200 se, wanted to increase my fps and graphics. So I went out and bought an bfg gforce 6600gtoc, another 512 of pc2700 ram, and a 550 watt p.s.

Now whenever I try to play source I get a datacache.dll error (they're working on it, hopefully solved soon). But when I try to play FEAR, or BF2, I get constant crashes to desktop, while loading a map or such.

Sidenote: I play counter-strike 1.6 and condition zero all the time with no crashes.

Here's what I'm running.

Pentium 4, 2.8ghz
1 gig pc2700 ram
gforce 6600gtoc
some 80 gig h/d
ThameStar 550 watt atx p.s
(all the latest drivers...except mobo drivers)

After reading another post on this forum, it seems that my cheapo power supply might be the culprite? How can I know for sure?

I'm really stumped and just want to play these games.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance

Answer:Need Help With Game Crashes

It could be the power supply and also some left over crap from the old ATI driver. Also the 6600GTs run very hot so they need alot of cooling.

Question: Game Crashes

Hi,

I wasn't sure where to put this!

The two games I have recently been playing are CS:S and Warcraft III, after a while of playing the sound on the game freezes on one bit of noise and the screen freezes with grey squares everywhere.

I thought it was a cooling problem to begin with as my CPU was getting as hot as 80 degrees celsius, but I fitted a new fan and now average about 30 degrees celsius, even when playing games.

When I put in the fan I refitted the whole case, and for a few days after that I had no crashing problems, but now they have come back.

I don't know what is useful so I will just list everything.

Graphics card: ATI Radeon 4870
PSU: Enermax Liberty 620W
CPU: Core 2 Quad 2.66MHz
MB: Gigabyte X48T-DQ6
RAM: 4GB DDR3 Corsair

My graphics card averages about 66 degrees celsius.

I don't know if I connected the power to the card wrong, it was supplied with a connector which plugged into the card and then is powered by molex. But when I turned the computer on a message displayed saying I needed to plug another cable in, so I plugged one of my PSU's modular PCI-E cables directly into the other empty slot on the graphics card, then it worked fine.

I just ran memtest86+ and it found no errors.

Any help will be useful!

Answer:Game Crashes

Any help would be appreciated. I have been playing CivIV and now the game movements are so slow that the game will lock up and give me a black screen that forces me to hard boot the computer. I tried to remove the game but could not.

Question: Game Crashes

Ok, so I play WoW, HL2 and have been trying to play the new TF2 but my game freezes up while I am playing at random times and i have to manually restart my computer to be able to do anything. I have a feeling that it has something to do with directx because a friend of mine suggested that I change my 3d engine to opengl instead of directx which I have done on WoW and now it doesn't crash. I should also note that these games didn't use to crash either. However running the game on opengl makes it much laggier and if i can pinpoint the problem it would be a huge relief because right now I'm thinking about buying a new computer.

Processor Amd Athlon 64 Processor 3200+
1gb ram
directx version 9.0c
Geforce 6600 GT

All drivers have been updated as well

Answer:Game Crashes

Could be an overheating problem, the PC is protecting itself from damage by shutting down rather than damaging it self. Check the PSU, all the Fans esp. the CPU on the CPU itself. Also make sure all the PCI cards are slotted in securely.

If possible install a tool the monitor PC temperatures to see where the issue is.

Question: Game Crashes

Hey, I just recently purchased Call of Duty: Ghosts and my computer not only reached the minimum requirements it surpassed them by quite a bit, enough to which I should be able to run the game on maximum graphics. Every time I open up singleplayer and multiplayer when I enter a game, I get these dreaded distorted pixels, freezing and then my game crashes no more than 5 seconds later. The error is that its not responding and nothing else. I don't know if this is the proper topic to put this in but I just want to fix this problem I'm not afraid to go buy a new part.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

What is the exact make, model and wattage of your power supply (PSU)?
Have you ever upgraded / changed any hardware in it?

It sounds like a possible power, overheating or perhaps a driver problem. Is your Windows installation and all your drivers fully patched and up to date?

Download and install HWMonitor (its free), run the program with your PC sat idle at the desktop and screenshot the full HWMonitor window.

Do you have any currently installed games that work without a problem?

Do you know exactly what graphics card you have rather than just 5900 series? Something like HD5970?

Question: game crashes

hello and thanks to anyone who can help me. i recently built a gaming computer for playing some high end games but to tink around with as well. everything on the computer works fine except that it gradually will decrease its performance and increase its errors even if nothing is done to it. i will eventually completely reformat the harddrive using the windows XP disk and everything will be fine. after reintalling everything the compuuter works without a hitch for about a month. then programs start crashing. restarrting the computer fixes them for a while but they start to happen more and more frequently. it has gotten to the point now where things are working fine except my games which will always shut down while loading maps. no errors message or anything. i have run diagnostic programs and have manually checked many things but nothing seems to make a difference. any ideas will help. thanks alot again.-Paul

I recently upgrade my video card to geforce7800GS, post a thread about what happen to my old card
http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic63342.html
So...this new videocard is not what I expect it can't even run warcraft3 on all high settings smoothly where my dead old videocard can at just a bit lower setting. And only manage to get around 30~50 fps in CS:S with
1024x768 all high.(maybe I was expecting too much?)
and it crashes alot esspecially when playing fear, actually I can't play fear. It'll crash in about 2mins after I start the game. I tried updating my driver and all but still, heres a thread with my minidumps: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic64515.html I'm pretty sure its my videocard but what could cause it to perform so poorly?
I have a dell XPS 2 specs: p4 3.0ghz 1gb memory.
any ideas?

Question: Game Crashes

I'm going to do some more work on this when I get home but I thought I'd fish for suggestions first.

I've had instability on some games for a little while, WOW crashes to desktop with IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL errors and protection faults. DOW DC crashes to desktop frequently when LAN gaming, I also get crashes with DOD, BF2 and Raven shield.

I'm positive the hardware is good, RAM and CPU are fully stress tested with Memtest86 and prime95, i've used ATItool with the graphics card to scan for artifacts.

I'm thinking its a driver or resource sharing issue. i've tried using different forceware drivers for the GFX and i've updated the creative drivers for the Sound card. Nforce dirvers are up to date.

Answer:Game Crashes

anything shown in the event viewer? maybe hard drive problem but unlikely.

did you install the nvidia firewall? that can cause problems...sounds like you have done the most you can to check hardware. Could do a repair of xp and install the drivers a fresh in a worst case scenario.

So, When ever i load up a new game and run it on its highest settings my computer just seams to Reset itself, Which is really really agrivating when your playing an MMO. I dont know what i can tell you besides, that it just seams to crash whenever i try to run any game on its highest settings...

I made my computer about 4 years ago and have made some upgrades since then (I was about 14-15 when i built it).

I think my problem may be my power supply its only 550W and im running a big video card that seams to be sucking all the power?

Edit : I keep my drivers up to date checking them every 2 weeks or so, and did so not 15 minutes ago.
2nd Edit : I Do not overheat my Video card Stays around 50c and my CPU is fine.
3rd Edit : Added 4890 To video card

I Did play wow for a good 3 years running it on highest settings, Now i cant run a single game on anything but its lowest settings for 20minutes.

Question: every game crashes

All right here's the deal. I've tried everything me and my friends can think of and can't solve this one. Everytime I load a game everything works fine until I press a button on the keyboard. I can move the mouse around and look all around a 3d game but can't actually play. This happens with every game I try to load. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't already reformatted and have it doing the same thing. If that wasn't bad enough my laptop that I've had for 5 months is doing the same thing now. this is bad cause they have 2 different configurations and are running different operating systems. Any help would be appreciated and any info you need is yours. I'm just going through withdrawals at not being able to play.

Hello!

I need help on some things. I just recently bought a new nVidia 6200 256MB video card and had some problems when I tried to play some games(Call of Duty, Age of Empires 3 Demo, Nosferatu). It worked fine the day before but after I installed a program (PowerDVD, I think or something; it came with the DVD-RW drive I just bought) I noticed that the system would freeze up after a few minutes of playing. Before I installed the program, I had no problems whatsoever when I played those games: now it seems I cannot play for more than a few minutes. The computer only crashes when I play; I watched a movie and experienced no problems at all. I also don't think it's an overheating issue, although I could be wrong.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

My bare system specs:

AMD Sempron 2400+
Inno3D nVidia 6200 256MB
- driver version is 6.14.0010.9147
384MB RAM
Direct X 9.0c

Answer:Help with Game Crashes

First of all: Welcome to TechSpot! Hope you'll love this place as much as I do!

Now, when you installed the new drive, did you make sure not to toss around other things like fan cables? If you accidentally pulled one out of it's socked then that could be a reason for overheating.

Another scenario is that, before you installed the new drive, the ventilation inside your was already bad and after you installed the drive it became worse. Keep in mind that I'm guessing here as I don't know the inner layout of your case.

Third scenario is that your PSU simply isn't powerful enough to run your system. The GPU draws more power when rendering 3D than it does in 2D mode.

To test whether or not it's a temperature problem, download the free application SpeedFan and post your temperatures.

Hi all,Over the past few months I've been using an X200 Tablet with Windows 7.  Since I've had it I've noticed problems with it not 'sleeping' properly and the ability to Lock, Restart or Shutdown the computer going missing. I?ve done some troubleshooting and narrowed down a scenario where I can repeat the problem 100% of the time.  -       Setup computer with USB device (a keyboard and mouse will do)-       Boot and logon-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Sleep the computer-       Wake the computer-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Unplug any of the USB devices At this point the computer can?t be locked, and if you send it to sleep it will essentially crash meaning you have to do a hard shutdown (or as has happened a few times, wait for the battery to run out in your laptop bag...).  I?ve tried different USB ports on the computer and different mice.  I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, I've even rebuilt it from the Windows DVD.  Is something anyone else has experianced?  If you have a X200 tablet does the same thing happen to you? T

Answer:Help - Repeatable X200T USB, Sleep and Lock/Restart/Shutdown crashes

Out of the blue, I happened to install this Microsoft hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976755), and today was the first day that, upon docking, I was able to lock my laptop, and I assume it will go to sleep at the end of the day when I take it home. In checking this forum, I see that this fix was suggested here some time ago:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/X200-Tablet-Win7-Black-screen-freeze-on-... Hope this helps.

If it crashes on startup, the Windows loading screen with the blue animated loading bar (I'm on XP Pro SP3, updated from SP2 with Windows Update) will sit there for a very long time. Sometimes the animation displays and sometimes it locks for about fifteen seconds before resuming. This is generally the symptom experienced during any of the crashes; freezing, unfreezing, freezing, unfreezing, and finally either freezing for good, or in the case of start up, BSoDing. Sometimes I am able to get into Windows and the system will run fine for a while, but eventually begins to display the same problem until it freezes completely and hit my reset button to be greeted by a BSoD.

I disabled "reboot on system failure" so the BSoD would stay up and I grabbed this error code:

UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME

0x000000ED (0x8A53BC00, 0xC00000B5, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185

According to the MS/TechNet Knowledge Base, this error code can mean one of two things. The four codes in parenthesis are hexadecimal codes that vary in different instances of the main error code, but if the second one is 0xC0000032, which mine isn't, that apparently means the file system on the drive is damaged.

In my case, the TechNet KB says I should "Check the IDE cable and load Fail-Safe from the BIOS," but that doesn't really apply to me because I'm running SATA hard drives on a SATA mobo. No IDE cables involved.

I just ran a HDD diagnostic hours bef... Read more

Answer:Persistent system BSoD crashes and lock-ups (Error code obtained)

I ran chkdsk /r from the recovery console, which was the other option given in the KB, and was able to smoothly boot into Windows afterward. Whether or not the problem returns remains to be seen.

I am trying to download an mmorpg called Eden eternal but every time I press start game the window just disappears and nothing happens. I looked at lots of forum posts and nothing seemed to work. I just updated my windows 7 and pressed troubleshoot compatibility. Now when it starts loading the game it says FTP can't connect, waiting to retry download. It used to work on this computer.

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Hello,

I bought a new system like 3 weeks ago.
When i start a game (dirt3,Skyrim,SaintsRow3) my screen sometimes turns into green (sometimes red) vertical stripes and my pc shuts down after a minute or so, but the sound of the game plays in the background.
Can anyone tell me what kind of problem i'm having here?

System Specs.
-MSI z68-g45(b3)
-I7 2600k
-Asus hd 6950 2gb
-16gb ram
-650w PSU

Answer:Pc crashes when starting game.

You may want to take a look at your windows error log and see what critical errors are occurring when you start the games. It could be something as simple as a corrupted video driver/direct x. At worst, it might be an issue with the graphics card on the laptop.

As the title says, I tend to have crashes during the middle of a game. These bring me to a black screen, the audio turns off, and the lights on my keyboard stop working. Lowering graphic settings does nothing noticeable to help this either. There is no noticeable correlations between the crashes either. This happens in many downloaded games I play (The Forest, Titanfall, Battlefield, Counter Strike). Games that it doesn't happen in are Minecraft, League of Legends, and Smite. Before I continue on this post in leaving all of my computer specs, a reply would be appreciated to this so I know the thread will be continued, and so I know what types of information I should be sharing.
-Thanks!

Howdy there. So I guess the computer basics to start:
Asus p5n-D mobo
core 2 duo 2.something ghz processor
2x evga 9600 gt in sli mode
2gb ram

Not sure what else to tell ya bout it. Anyways, here's my problem.
Playing starcraft 2, I will randomly get a crash that looks like this:
Now I was monitoring the temperatures of both gpus and they were easily in operating range. Case was blowing cool air most of the time. Got fed up and assumed my GPU was toast. Just picked up a evga gtx 460 se, popped it in and not even a half hour into it it crashed with this exact screen. Sometimes there are a lot more lines going all over.

Any ideas? I guess I'm kinda a techie novice but I've done all I can think of. Maybe faulty ram?? Thanks guys/gals. Hope to hear from someone soon :D

Question: Weird Game Crashes

I'm not new to game crashes by any respect but these have me puzzled.
I tried to play "Plane Crazy" on my computer and I get a black screen with plane sounds from the intro playing before it simply crashes into unresponsiveness where I have to do alt-ctrl-del to pop up that box to close it.
I tried to play "Need for speed: Hot Pursuit" and aside from the menu to chose to run the game it never starts.
I tried to play "Crimson Skies" and it freezes up totally after playing the intro song. Even the A-C-D doesn't work.
VGA games work fine.
I don't play the latest greatest games. I'm more of a racing/flying/rpg game player than a FPS player. (As FPS's tend to make me nauseous for some reason when I play them)
I did not use to have these problems with the computer when I was running my ATI Radeon 9000 videocard with the original 512 megs of ram installed for memory.
Now I have a ATI Radeon(by visiontek) X1550 with 1 gigs of ram for memory.
Any thoughts?

Answer:Game crashes, freezez ect

The two usual suspects are heat and PSU. Also, that's a fairly old vidcard that may simply not be able to handle newer games. Download and install CoreTemp and show us temps. Download and install CPU-Z and show us both the CPU and Memory panels. When in BIOS show us the screen that shows voltages. Could be memory - download and run Memtest86 thru at least step 7 on each stick individually.

My first guess is PSU.
