I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.

It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Aspire AST690-UP925A 250GB SATA hard disk first drive full and won't go to 2nd

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

What OS is on the PC.

Certain simple activities (like opening certain documents) generate "not enough disk space" announcements. I want to move as much as possible to the D:\ drive, but I realize I can't simply drag and drop programs. I've made a backup of the system. I could start deleting things from the C, but I don't want to do something I'd be sorry for later. I need the steady hand of someone who knows their way around in this situation who can say, "do this, then do that." My iDrive backup subscription ran out in January and I can't afford to re-up just now. I think if I deleted the iDrive files from C:\ the SSD wouldn't be so full. I wondered if I could make an image with my other free backup software and save it to the other drive, then clear off a lot from the C:\ drive, then after that, selectively install to the cleaned up C:\? Any simpler, better comments and suggestions welcome.

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

What kind of hard drives are these? There might be a Bios limitation you need to overcome.

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

Which is 2 partitions short of the Lenovo in #1. The 2 missing 1. Lenovo D: drive NTFS partition and 2. 1000MB partition.
Maybe I should keep them all...

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro and the only option I see when I right click on the drives are NTFS or exFAT.

Hopefully it will be something easy because I'm not at all handy with the command prompt, unless someone walks me thru it.

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

This hard drive originally was in my brother's computer. He had XP installed, went to install Windows 7 and after the first reboot, it would just hang on the bios screen.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

Hi I'm Mark. I'm having a problem when it comes with my notebook [dell inspiron 600m] and my external hard disk [WD Elements 250gb]. when I connected the 5 pin cable of the external hard disk to the usb port of the notebook, the connection is seem to unstable or on-and-off, therefore making file copying impossible. The external hard drive and the notebook is in good condition, although I can't really figure out what seems to be the problem. I am also having a theory that this might be a power supply problem. I would be very grateful to someone who can help me about this matter..

Hello, have been searching the net for an answer to this question with no satisfactory answers.

System details,
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 2,4GHz
2GB Ram
500GB Packard Bell External Hard Drive - USB connection

I have a 500GB external hard-drive and Windows Vista is currently telling me it is full. When I check the hard-drive properties in Explorer it also shows up as very close to full. However when I select all folders on the hard-drive and check properties the size is only approx half. i.e 216GB

The drive system is NTFS and I have made sure in "Folder Options/View" that hidden files and folders are shown.

Does anyone have an idea what this could be ?

The drive manufacturers reckon a kilo is 1000 (reasonable, I suppose), but the rest of the computer world regards it as 1024.So a 250Gb drive is 250/1.024/1.024/1.024 = 233Gb.

I've got a hard disk in my laptop partitioned into to two.

After a year of good service, my laptop is now, from time to time during use, displaying 'disk full' type messages when trying to save a file (Word) or unzip a file (Winrar) and things like that.

I can still access files on the disk, just not write to it, although the problem when it is occurring seems to be intermittent.

The disks aren't full and have over 10% free. When I restart Windows the problem goes away.

I'm guessing there is something wrong with the disk?

Any ideas on how to check for errors/problems or solve this?

Thanks.

Hi folks,

I recently bought a new Hitachi 250GB SATA hard drive and created one primary partition of full size using Partition Magic on a boot disk. I then installed windows xp on it (no service packs). Straight after install I noticed it showed as a 232GB drive (fair enough) but also said around 113GB of space had been used.

I have now installed some more applications and the total file size of everything on the drive totals 24.1GB. My C drive shows 134GB used with 98.3GB free.

I guess it's something to do with partitioning larger HD's but I'm new to all that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I earlier posted about the Aspire AST690-UP925A having 250GB hard drive. I since then contacted Aspire chat support. Apparently, not being tech savy we didn't realize 250 gb hard drive only 112 c drive is able to be used, the d data drive holds the programs to run the computer.

I didn't mean can I use the external hard drive internally. I meant, if I hook it up externally would it work in place of the internal hard drive that is nearly full except for around 10 GB?

So, unfortunately the computer isn't as big as you believe. But...I wanted to know if I purchase (I was looking at western digital elements 2TB external hard drive). Can we use it for this computer. It will not run itunes or anything like that, but we can obviously go online.

My brother wants to buy a new computer, but I know that is probably not the way to go. Should we get an internal hard drive installed and other memory or something or can we use the external hard drive?

I would appreciate any informed help on this since we do not no technical info on computers. Can't really afford to buy another computer right now.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

When I bring up 'computer" (Windows + E) I've noticed that the bar graph showing how relatively full an external hard drive is is colored blue-green. But whenever there is less than 10 percent of the drive space free that bar turns red.

That made some sense for a drive with a few hundred gigabytes (although I don't understand the technical reasons) because I assume there needs to be a minimum amount of free space for the system to be able to do whatever manipulation of those files might be required, such as defragmenting the drive (something I've never done in decades).

However with a 4 terabyte drive the system says it is over 90 percent full when there is still over 350 gigabytes still available. That's a huge amount of space, as big as some drive C's on some computers, so I've been ignoring the red bar, but still keeping an eye on those hard drives that have it.

Does anyone have information on how much space should really be left unused on a hard drive? I hate to overfill a drive, yet also don't see the point in pulling a drive for storage with 200 or 300 gigabytes still available on it. Any advice (with sound reasons) appreciated.

Answer:How full is too full for a hard drive?

Defrag is done automatically when the PC is idle in Windows 7, you can also start it manually of course.

There is a tutorial or some such I remember seeing here to adjust when the bar turns red. I will try to find it.

Edit: Here it is low disc space partition color

It is not exactly setting the %, but disabling the coloring all together though. Can't find an exact answer to your question though. See if you will like the above solution.

Hi, I have a question about what XP might do in the event that the C: drive gets absolutely maxed out.For a while now I've just been dumping crap onto my 80GB Seagate C: drive, and a few days ago I realized that there was less than 1GB of space left.  I planned on reformatting this drive in the next week or so, so I didn't pay much attention. Then last night it was, I kid you not, down to 38.5MB of free space.  I was in the midst of downloading the new Ubuntu release (to a different drive, because I knew I didn't have the space for it on C:) when I went to bed.  However, when I woke up this morning, I discovered that I had also been downloading two other files (which had been in progress for several days, hence my having forgotten about them), which WERE going to C:, and the C: drive suddenly had 1.04GB of free space. What is XP's protocol when a hard drive reaches absolute max capacity?  I'm hoping that it hasn't deleted anything that I'm attached to, but I honestly don't know where to start looking first.thanks in advance for your time and any insight you can offerRojer

Answer:Western Digital Caviar 250GB wont give the FULL size

I didn't do the math, but that sounds about right. There is a difference in the size the manufacturere advertises, and the actual reported size once the disc is installed on the system. Manufactures report the size as 1billion bytes=1GB, where your computer uses 1024MB=1GB. Manufactures also round up sometimes to make the size even out and make it look more desirable. an example would be a drive with 123billion bytes capacity might be sold as a 125GB or 128GB because it looks better on paper. I believe that tactic is mostly used by lesser brands, but I'm not completely sure if some of the major makers may use it as well.

Hi all, I purchased a external drive to back up files on our desktop and laptops. I am looking for easy way to do this, do I do all files or do I have to go into all of them one at a time. I say this because one laptop is my daughters, can I just send all her pic and music files all at once. Our main computer(desktop)is windows vista, everyday it's getting louder and louder and each morning its shows a message says configuring and it's like counting down. This takes long time. I looked at the space left. It shows space available on (c) and on d it's full which is recovery so I don't have a clue how files got on there. My hubby doesn't know much about even getting on computer, but when he does it seems something goes wrong. I want to clean up and get rid of files so my son who's 11 can use it for games. It's so slow and I don't want to delete wrong things.  From reading here and just knowing not to delete recovery. How do I clear out space on D...I tried opening some files on it but they all seem to do with the windows system. What can I do with my desktop ?And is it possible to clear out all files from laptop...it is about 5 yrs old...and she has alot of music and pics on there..just wondering if it's worth time to clean out the files. It takes forever to get online and when we do its so slow. Hope I'm not sounding to confusing.any suggestionstygreat site so far

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. You have presented more that one issue. The forum will help you, but some detail is needed. What OS are you using?  What make and model of eternal drive do you use?The proper way to remove programs is in the con control  panel. But Music and pictures files can be copied to a CD-R or DVD-R and removed from the computer. The external drive can also be used to transport files from on PC to another. But using DVD-R or CD-R is preferable. The best use of an external drive is to make a backup of the operating system and programs.Avoid putting files on the recovery partition.

I have a hard drive that showed no free space before taking it out of the desktop, this is a no name, custom built unit. I wanted to take data off of the hard drive to free up some space, but when I installed it into another unit, it's telling me "do you want to format" this hard drive. I cannot view the HD other than to see that it's full to capacity. Can I mount a full hard drive and make space without losing data. What if I partition the HD, I guess all the data will be lost? Have you used any third party software that really recovers data from a recently formatted HD? How do I know that my hard drive has crashed? What are the symptoms?

Answer:Full Hard Drive or Crashed Hard Drive

Sounds like the drive was moved to a PC using a different OS or the drive has become corrupted.

You can test the HDD using the drive manufacturers disk tools. Run the short and long test. If there are no errors, the drive is most likely fine.

I've had good luck with Partition Table Doctor on corrupt drives and Easeus Data Recovery for data recovery.

Question: Full hard drive

Once again, its not mine but my son-in-law's.His hard drive has two partitions, C at 5gb and D (Store) at 55GB. Problem, C is chocker block full, yesterday not even AOL would start until I dumped some rubbish and managed to get around .10MB of free space. On the other hand, D is almost empty. I've obtained Partition Magic, though I'm still trying to figure out how to use it, to try and help him. One idea was to merge partitions but, according to the manual, if one of the partitions contain the OS then it can't be done. Also as C has the OS on it then it can only go up to about 8GB. Of course, I may have misinterpreted the instructions so if anyone knows better please let me know. One idea, of mine, is to use the 'Move File, etc' in XP Pro to move programmes from C to D. Would that work? Bearing in mind that he has a number of online games that he plays most days. I don't mind messing about and expermenting with my computer but not when its somebody else's so any help/guidance will be very much appreciated.

Answer:Full hard drive

You can either extend C: partition to what size you want say 30GB or remove the partition altogether.

I just reinstalled Windows 10 a week ago, because I was having all kinds of problems with a black screen. Maybe some of you read my post about my old boot disk coming up blank. But now I have the opposite problem: when I installed Windows 7 the second time, I used a different hard drive as my boot disk. Now Windows tells me that my boot disk is 75% full--it has 536 GB used! Checking 'Storage' in settings tells me that 496 GB are consumed by directories classified as 'Other', but the largest have only 1 with more than a GB, most of the rest are less than a MB. Checking the disk for errors finds no problem. Where did my storage go?

Hi- I have a Dell Insiron 1150- bought in Feb 2005, Windows XP, 60GB hard drive, 512ram, dvd burner. I use it mostly for e-mail, internet and downloading pics from my digital cameras. I've put some short video clips on it from my camcorder but since I can't get very good quality DVD's from it- I haven't done that in a while & all video has been deleted. My problem is this, 2 weeks ago my hard drive had 28gb's of free space on it. Now all of a sudden it has only 6gb free. Since I haven't put anything much on the computer lately except some pictures- I am totally confused as to where all this free space disappeared to. If I highlight my picture folder it says I have 2gb of pics in it. There are roughly 1400 jpeg files. If I highlight and click properties on docs and settings it says I have used 34GB's. my programs under my name- it says I have almost 24gb used and my daughter's screen says she has almost 10gb used. I've checked every file I could think of and can't find any large files. I basically have what came preinstalled with some upgrades to some, 1 Sims game, software from my digital cameras and AIM on there. I haven't added anything big. Anyone have any ideas where all this space went? My computer tells me I can't defrag because I have less than 15% free space. I defragged it anyway and also did a disk cleanup. I have way more pictures and games loaded on my Dell PC and still have 24gb free on its 60gb hard drive. I'm totally confused as to where all that space went... Read more

Answer:Full hard drive? can't be

Make sure that system is clean and use ccleaner as well. Pics can take up significant space if lots of them as well as video files. I have a program called Power Desk which is a GREAT file manager that can sort files any way you like, including increasing order of size. I'm not sure that it runs on XP, but on 2000 or less the free version 4 does just fine. If also has integrated file viewing. Unfortunately it doesn't run on XP (the free version) There is a later version that does XP, but not sure about a free version of that.Do you have any file viewing software with similar capability? Explorer can do it but it is a little more cumbersome. Use View/Details and then click on size to sort by size. (THis has to be done in each directory however.Do you have hidden files and directories visible to check in there?

OK i have two Drives in my computer DRIVE C AND E both 80g so when formated there about 74.5g's each.

Drive C has all my system files, programs like Microsoft Office and so on. Drive E i only install games on

here's my problem, DRIVE E says its almost full when its not! IN My Computer i right on drive E and click on Properties computer says used space 68g's, free 6.5g's.

I went in the E drive right click on program files and click on Properties. in Properties it says im only using 60g's out of 74.5g's. and i made sure i didnt miss any thing. (like i want in tools / folder options / view and show all hidden files and so on).

So i would like to know how i can get my full 14.5g's back than only having 6.5g's.

is there a program i can buy or freeware that can fix this?

thank u very much for any help.

Answer:HARD DRIVE FULL when its not

Normally this will be due to only a couple of things.. first make sure you have hidden files and folders turned on for that drive. Look for an extremely large hidden file... there will probably be one. .check it out before you delete it.

Secondly check to make sure your recycle bin isnt set to some huge amount of space (right click and then properties) make sure its not set to something higher than 10% of the total drive.. each drive CAN be set independent of each other as far as space used.

I would just about bet on the hidden file ..however, it could be that you are also running an automatic system restore point, and you may just have too many restore points taking up a lot of room.. check your task scheduler for that, or check your restore points.. you may have hundreds.

If you have a temp folder on the drive that is showing full, clear all those items.. Thats about all I can think of.. there could be more solutions, but this is what I see on a regular basis for the most part...seeing that you said you used that drive for games, I would assume it will be a temp file taking up space..

Check your page file size too, and make sure you dont have it set for that drive and some huge amount..people will overkill with paging files for some odd reason.

Running XP Home Edition on a Dell 2400 Desk Top. 37gig hard drive basicaly full, maybe 50 mb spare. Running defrag shows all fragmented file and not enough turnaround space to de frag. System restore has no room to run. Adaware and Spybot show zero pop ups or anything else for that matter.

Run latest Norton virus checker and get 35 at risk files - none in boot or system. All have ADWARE in the file name, threat or action. Norton WILL NOT remove these threats.

I think these are filling my hard drive. I know that I have less than 6 gig of programs and files.

Ideas on how to fix?

Thanks,
shortcut

Answer:37 gig hard drive FULL!

the file ADWARE is a trojan. Since you have no space left, try downloading this program BAZOOKA from http://www.kephyr.com/spyware.

Answer:Hard drive is full, but of what?

Have you tried disk cleanup?

I have three computers all with 30 gb hard drives.  Two desk top, one lap top.  What would be the max that you would want to fill up the hard drive before if could mess with the computer operation? Thanks,Duffy

Answer:How full should you have with a hard drive?

My rule of thumb is 15% of the total drive should remain free space. So for a 30 G HDD it should be a minimum of about 5 or 6 G....HDD's are relatively inexpensive these days. Upgrade.

I have a Lenovo Y570 Ideapad with a 750GB Hard Drive. It is stating that I only have 1 GB of free space, when there is only about 60 GB worth of software installed. I am constantly receiving "Low Disk Space" messages, when I should have TONS of free space left. I have done hours upon hours of research trying to figure out what is causing this problem, and cannot seem to find the solution anywhere.

Many people who have encountered similar problems have fixed it by disabling Windows Restore and deleting the restore points, etc. This is not the problem for me. I have it entirely disabled and have made sure there are no restore points sitting around. In fact, absolutely NONE of the solutions that have worked for other people have worked for me.

I am completely out of ideas. Can somebody with advanced knowledge PLEASE help me? I have no idea what to do anymore and my computer is basically useless in this state.

Please, please help me.

Edit: Btw, I have run TreeSize, Spacesniffer AND WinDirStat (all in Administrator mode). None of the programs are able to indentify what is taking up the space. It just shows up as a gigantic chunk of "Unknown" space.

Answer:Hard Drive says it's FULL. It is NOT!

I would suggest you try running Scandisk as a slim possibility. In my opinion, it's a 'worst case' scenario, but when a hard drive starts getting bad sector errors, it tends to regard them as unknown, unusable sectors. I doubt it's the cause, but it's an avenue worth ruling out.
Running programs such as "sfc /scannow" at the command prompt, and "chkdsk" will help ensure the hard drive is clear of this.

I'm going to assume that the hard drive is not being overused as virtual memory, but can you confirm that you've run an anti-malware program or two, to ensure there's no virus or worm filling the hard drive with useless/hidden junk files? I've had this happen to me on several occasions over the years. The first time was caused by the Love Bug way back in the year 2000. I'd always recommend MalwareBytes anti-malware to check this.

Some systems have a separate partition for their restore points, and these are often hidden. Are you able to confirm that it's not a small restore partition that's full? Is it possible that the restore points have been removed, but the files have remained?

Please do keep me updated.

Question: Hard Drive Full

Windows XP is telling me that my drive is full. I have had this problem before an ended up reformating and reinstalling Windows; big pain. The drive 10 GB and I have deleted over 600 MB of files yet Windows says that the drive is still full. I'm guesing something is writing to Hard Drive but what I don't know. If that's not the case then XP is misreading the drive.

Answer:Hard Drive Full

This might seem like a silly question, however you are emptying the recycle bin correct? To save more room, go to disk cleanup and under more options have it remove all except the last system restore point. Do a search for any *.tmp files and delete those as well.

Post back with results.

I have a dell computer running Windows 7.
The problem I am having is that the hard drive is constantly filling up even though I keep deleting stuff to free up space.
I cannot put any kind of anti virus or malware software onto it as it will not download anything due to the disk being full.
The Bitdefender security ran out but I could not update it because I cannot download anything, so could be some kind of virus.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive full or not

The root directory of any drive letter can only hold 255 files. After that, it's full.

Folders have no limit though. So, if you have a ton of files in the root, you will get an error.

Move them into folders to fix the problem.

If you do NOT have tons of files, run a scandisk on the drive to make sure there isn't a FAT error.

Answer:Hard drive full

Ultimately, only you can decide, since only you know what programs you want to keep and which ones you could let go.  But, I noticed several things in the images you posted. You have multiple instances of Java.  Remove all but the latest; that's all you need for Java.  And, I see multiple entries of Microsoft.NET.  I'm not a .NET subscriber, so I don't know whether you have duplicate stuff there you can get rid of, but it looks suspect to me.  I see you have Wise Disk Cleaner/Wise Registry Cleaner, but you also have CCleaner.  Perhaps you could remove one of them.  And, what about the item called PCHealth?  Do you use it? What are all the MSXML 4.0 SP2 items?  Are those files very big?You also appear to have numerous photography programs.  Do you feel you need all of them?

My hard drive is divided into 2/18 gigs, which I am not happy about, but have been living with. I am on dial up, and this week my machine received the auto download of SP2. I am in big trouble now with space on my C drive and I have not even installed SP2. I am down to 20 MB! I uninstalled VCom Suite, Adobe Reader, and maybe a couple of small things. But instead of gaining MB, I seem to be losing more! Help! Before I received this download, I had about 12% on the drive, so I have been limping along as it is. But now it is critical to gain back some room. Should I delete the download of SP2 without installing it? If so, where do I find it? I don't even have enough room to install it, do I? I have always had a fight trying to keep enough free space. It is almost like something is eating up my free space. I did an online virus scan just before this happened, so I know it is not a virus causing the loss of MB. Thanks for your help!

My current hard drive is only 17Gb and is almost full. I am considering adding an additional drive of around 300Gb. My PC is six years old, however, the Motherboard, CPU, Graphics Card and RAM were all upgraded in 2004. Current spec is AMD Athlon XP 2600, 512Mb RAM 128 Mb Graphics Card running with Windows XP OS. I want to retain my original hard drive for the OS and transfer all other files to the new drive. Will the installation of such a large HD be straight forward and will its full capacity be recognised?

Answer:Hard drive nearly full

you may run into problems with any drive or partition once it gets below 15% free space. Its a good idea to keep around 15% free space anyway because most(possibly all?) defrag utilities require 15% free space in order to do their job.

I'd recommend cleaning up a bit of space on that drive. Burn media files(music, vids, etc... to CDs or DVDs) You might also want to give Windows a good cleaning by using something such as Windows Washer to clean up temp files that have been left by previous tasks(I have cleaned over a GB of junk off systems by simply cleaning up temp files)

Question: Hard Drive is full

Have windows XP: the hard drive is full, and did not backup the data. The computer is give me the blue screen, saying SCANDSK.
I scanned disk and still have the same problem. I can fix this problem without losing the data. It have to be in DOS, the PC can not load Windows.

Thanks!

Answer:Hard Drive is full

For starters my might try cleaning out the TEMP and Internet Cache, any .tmp and .dmp files. This might help get enough room to boot.

Afterwards you can try to free up more space by removing any unnecessary programs and files. If you still need to, you can get a larger drive and transfer everything over.

Hi all,

I bought a Western Digital 1TB, Elements Desktop external hard drive. Transferred just shy of 600Gb of music onto it when I first got it, and then pretty much left it alone - played some music off it, but other than that haven't touched it.

Now I can't transfer anything on to it at all, it tells me that the drive is full, despite there being 404 GB of free space.

I have run chkdsk on it (no errors). Checked for fragmentation (perfect). Uninstalled and re-installed the drivers (pointless). Unmounted and re-mounted (running out of ideas).

I downloaded WinDirSat which just shows me that everything is working fine.

It is, for some reason I don't fully understand, set up in FAT32, not NTFS - I have tried using CONVERT H: /fs:ntfs in command prompt to change that - but it hasn't worked, and I have no idea why, or even if that would fix the problem.

Frankly, I am out of ideas and at the end of my tether, I do a lot of video editing, so space is at a premium on my system - that 404GB would be really useful to get back, so if anyone can help me with this problem I would be eternally grateful.

Question: Hard drive full!!

hello, my name is Derek, and i'm having some problems with my hard drive(c). It is full, and no matter what i delete it still shows it is full and i get the low disk space warning. i have restarted my computer, and it starts up with about 170mb of space, then within about 15 mins, dwindles down to 0. i have 3 user accounts on it, and i deleted one, but after a restart, it was back. also the programs i deleted with add/remove came back after i restarted my pc. some of the files i have tried to delete said it could not be deleted because it was corrupt and unreadable.  i thought it might be a bad sector on my disk. is that a possibility? i have tried to run Chkdsk, but it doesn't seem to do anything.my disk capacity is 41.3gb

Answer:Hard drive full!!

170MB is practically ZERO. Couple of temporary files created, and the space is gone.Windows needs at least 15% of a free space - over 6GB in your case. With so low free space, next thing, you know, your computer wont' boot at all.

Question: hard drive full.

I am in panic mode.In the Components list, click to clear the check box next to the component(s) that you want to remove.I misread this and think I just erased my media player. What I don't understand is before my reboot I had 27.9 gigs left. After reboot I still have 27.9 gigs left. So where did it go?EDIT: Okay I found it using search. But what was the point of using removing windows componets if it didn't remove anything. My Comp holds 144 gigs 27.9 left. its xp home edition service pack 3.

Answer:hard drive full.

There are certain Windows components which you can disable, but not permanently remove as they're built into Windows more or less. This includes Internet Explorer and Media Player. All removing them from the components list does is remove the shortcuts and file associations for those programs, but it doesn't actually remove the programs. They're still there and they can still actually be run by locating the executable on the hard drive or by typing the executable name (ex. iexplore.exe and wmplayer.exe) into the "Run..." dialog box. There are ways to permanently remove them, but I don't recommend it as some programs automatically open those Windows programs instead of what you might have as your default player or browser.

After reading a bit, I decided to check my free space on my computer. 111 GB is my total space, while 92 is being used at 19 is free. A couple weeks ago the numbers were virtually reversed and I have no idea how that much memory has been taken up. Also, about a month ago, my computer has had to go through the blue check disk screen every time it boots up, and ever since the Mft error, it has stopped in the middle saying its getting an error. Hello, I have been having a strange problem where my computer seems to think its hard drive is full. I have used WinDirstat and spacesniffer to try and find abnormally large files I dont recognize but to no avail. I have ran CC cleaner, AWDcleaner, malwarebytes, ADaware, and avast antivirus (boot time and full scan) trying to track something down. I have also ran an "error check" and "defragment' on the drive and nothing was found.
Both WinDirstat and spacesniffer determined there to be 209GB of data on the drive, where under my computer and under properties, the hard drive belives it has 431GB of data. that leaves me only 21GB left on the drive. Help is very much appreciated, thank you guys.

Other than disk clean up parts of Windows is there any other way I can clear any unnecessary files to create more space?

Answer:Hard Drive Full

If its Windows XP Pro (not sure about Home) then you can change the location of the "My Documents" folder - Start Windows Explorer, highlight "My Documents" right click and then select properties. From here you can then move the folder and and all contents to another drive which has more free disk space.
