I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Flickering power supply LED light

if the components in the computer also flick on/off or the lights instead then that sounds like compacitor failure or the PS is fried

I have a Compaq Presario, Windows Vista Basic, around 3 gigs of RAM.

I recently rearranged my room, and when I went to go plug everything back in for my computer, the power supply light started to flicker when it was fine the day before.
I don't remember this ever happening before; it's still green, it just flickers rapidly and I can hear it.
I thought it was a temporary thing, but my power button is completely unresponsive and it will not turn on.

I have had my power supply replaced twice prior, and I fear I may have accidentally surged my power supply when I plugged it back in.
I would like to know if this is the only cause, I have tried different outlets, and even checked to make sure that I didn't mix up my power supply cable with my monitor or printer, but the results are the same.
Even when I unplug any power source, the light flickers and gradually dies, as compared to going out immediately.

The last time I replaced my power supply was around October of 2009, due a faulty fan.
The time before, was October 2007, when the power supply just shorted out.

This time I am completely confused since it was working the day prior, and wonder if my moving it would have caused something. It seems so unlikely, but due to my bad history with power supplies, I am prone to assume it is the same problem.
But if anyone has any other suggestions, please help.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Solved: Power Supply light flickering, computer won't turn on

Since you moved the computer I would open the case and make sure all the powersupply connections to the mobo and peripherals are tight.

I am haveing alot of the same problems with my computer, I had alot of noise with my fan so I used canned air to clean my fans thinking that they were dirty, then I noticed that my power light was flickering off and on, it seems that the only difference is that I have alot of lag and that my computer is running the fan with every key that I press and every icon that I highlight, and all of the tests that were run on my computer are not showing anything... This has 2 computer techs totally confussed, hopefully the information that you get may help me out good luck with your problems :)

I turned on my computer today, and it decided to not work on me. Whenever I pushed the On button, the LED on the front panel and the Power supply flickers on and off. I had a feeling it was my Power Supply, because weeks before this happened, I've been having to deal with all sorts of Problems. Computer would suddenly lag, then reboot..but when it reboots the computer gets to the Windows XP splash Page and I get the BSOD and it just reboots all over again. The only way I could get the damn computer to boot Windows XP was to leave it off for about 10-15 minutes. I had a feeling it was the Power supply over-heating, but I shrugged it off. The night before this happened, I opened up my computer and cleaned/blowed off the dusts inside. I put the case back on, plugged everything back and never bothered turning it on. Now, after turning it back on..my computer would just keep flickering. After unplugging the cord connecting to the PSU, my computer would still continue to flicker for about..1-2 minutes. I decided to take off the PSU, thinking THAT was the problem, but..now I'm lost..because I plugged in the PSU while it wasn't connected to the computer and it didn't flicker at all, but the fan wasn't running.

My PSU:
Bestec
Model: ATX-250-12Z
Input:100-127V~6A
OUTPUT +12V
250WMAX +5V
+3.3V

Answer:Power Supply/Computer flickering on and off!

I know that one time when I was having problems with the power supply, the AC cord was damaged. Also, if you took your computer apart and weren't careful, you might have shocked something and destroyed an essential part.

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?

I'm trying to help a friend with an HP PC that is fairly new - runs Win XP but don't know any other spec details.

The power supply's green light is on - but pressing the ON button does nothing... no noise, no fan no nothing. Is it that the power supply has gone out - even though the green light is on? Or is it the motherboard?

I could put in a new power supply for her but I hate to buy one then find out it's the motherboard.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks!

hi,

I have 2 neon lights (red and blue) but cvan only fit the blue one in at the bottom. I found a place at the top of the tower which is about 3 cm away from the power supply and I asked one of my friends should I put it there and he said yes no probs but then another frind said that it most likely will damage the power supply.

btw the neon is a cold cathode red.

Can I put the neon there?

Answer:Can I place a neon light near the power supply?

theres no way you can damage your PSU, even a direct short most if not all PSU's are thermally protected, and for short circuits

I am working on a frends desktop that recently might have been hit by lightning. After a big storm their desktop would no longer power on. Now, I am no stranger to computers. I unplugged the motherboard main connector and I get a solid green light when I plug the psu in. Plug the main connector back in and plug the psu in I get blinking light again. So either its the PSU or mainboard. Im thinking psu since usually that is what goes first, but at the same time I am leaning towards mainboard. what do you all think? On another note, Are these boards proprietary? I have a few standard ATX PSUs I could test my theory with but not if I have to rewire them.

My mom gave me a Dell Dimension 4700 computer that was acting up. She said it would turn it's self off randomly and she thought it was a virus. When I brought the computer to my place, it powered on once, then I went to turn it on again and nothing. No lights, no power what so ever. So after doing some research I bought a new power supply for it. I just replaced the power supply and plugged the computer in and now there is a blinking amber light in the front and a solid green light on the motherboard but it won't turn on. I have checked all of the connections and they are properly seated. Any ideas what is causing the problem?

I can't get my computer to boot at all, not into CMOS, not anything. It doesn't power up. And the green LED light that comes with the power supply is constantly flashing.

This has happened before, normally when I wait a while before trying to boot, I can get the fan inside the power supply to spin just a little bit. The last time it happened, I fixed it by taking out one of the memory sticks.

I have no other power supply to test, so I don't know whether it's a problem with the motherboard, or the power supply. However, I notice that when the 24-count connector pin isn't connected to the motherboard, the light doesn't flash, it just stays lit green. When I plug it in, it starts flashing again. Maybe it's the motherboard, maybe the pins are bad, I'm not sure what that suggests.

Is there anything I can do to diagnose this clearer?

Hello, I the power supply light of my Media Center m1050y is blinking and the PC does not turn on at all. So I tried the troubleshooting sequence posted here in the HP Support site, and after unplugging all the cables and replugging them one by one, it turns out that the light blinks only when the PS is connected to the mother board (the connection is a white, wide plug with about 12 pins - pardon my ignorance on the actual name). I looked on the internet about trying to narrow the cause on the motherboard and I unplugged the front USB ports, the fan, and other "solutions" without any luck. Does this mean the motherboard is fried and either I need to replace the motherboard or look for another PC? Thanks!

Answer:Power Supply Light Blinking When Plugged to Motherboard Only

What troubleshooting sequences did you try......was it this.   Suggestion: get a hair dryer, and use it at the rear vent. See if the light stops flashing. Read about the hair dryer tip here.

Hi, i recently bought a new computer and decided to give my parents my old one. Before doing so, i took the side off and blew out all of the dust. I also took out my video capture card since they wouldnt need it. Well, after all of that i hook it up for them and it wont come on. I check out the back of the PC, and the power supply light is blinking. After some unplugging and plugging in of the power cables from the power supply, i notice the light starts blinking(and clicking) when i plug in the motherboard.I figured maybe the heat sinc had came loose from the processor after reading some possibilities online and figured i could just but some thermal paste and redo it myself. After applying new thermal paste and getting everything set, i try the computer again and its still doing the same thing. Im frustrated at this point because before i cleaned it out, it worked great.Since i was able to narrow it down to the power cable plugging into the motherboard, i figured i would mess with it a little. I noticed that as soon as i started to plug it in the light would blink but when i would pull it out and it stopped. Then the next time it would go further before it started to blink. After removing it and plugging it back in i was able to get it to plug in without the light blinking. The computer powers up, works as if everything is fine. I can even shutdown the computer and the start it up days later without issue. Now for the problem. I was plugging some stuff in earlier and hit the ... Read more

I have an Alienware 17 R3 and recently updated the BIOS and the other day I noticed the ?annoying? blue ring on the charger switched off, to get it to come back on I need to disconnect from the laptop and switch off and on again. But several times since it will stay illuminated until I plug it in, the laptop hasn?t moved from my desk and the power pack has been under the desk so the only thing I think that could of damaged it would be this update.
It had a replacement motherboard a few months after purchase but now a few months out of warranty, is it only the power supply or worse?

Answer:Power supply blue light switches off when I plug it into the laptop.

If the LED on the DC plug doesn't stay on reliably, replace the adapter with a new OEM unit first.  If that doesn't solve the problem,  the next suspect is the system's DC jack -- replace this part
www.parts-people.com/index.php
If that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard is bad -- Dell's warranty on replacement parts is 90 days.  If it's been less time than that, have the board replaced again.  If you had it replaced elsewhere, contact the repair shop to find out what warranty they offer on the repair they did.

My sister-in-law has an eMachine that she turned off and unplugged before leaving for vacation. A week later she returned and plugged it back in only to find it won't turn on. I don't know much about this pc other than it's a tower and about 3 or so years old. I figured it was probably the PSU (power supply) but wanted to verify as many things as possible. Basically, there is a green light on the back of the pc (on the PSU) that will flashes on and off when you try to turn on the computer. The PSU fan doesn't spin and nothing else makes any attempt to turn...just dead.

I pulled all the power connectors and jumpered the power switch pins (15-16), this gave me a solid green light on the PSU and the fan spun normally. I tested with a voltmeter and got the proper voltage on all the pins. I am thinking that this probably rules out the PSU but not 100% as something could be 'pulling it down'???

Any ideas on what else to look at? I hate to buy a PSU when it appears this one is ok. That pretty much leaves the MoBo and/or CPU. I've pulled all the cards and memory trying to get it to do anything and nothing affects it. I suspect there is something wrong with the MoBo but don't know how to verify that.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

We got a Compaq Presario S6500NX from a friend who had upgraded to another computer and we can't get it to work. It ran fine before he brought it to us, however, once we got it here and tried to power it up it wouldn't start at all.

On the power supply in the back the green light blinks and clicks rapidly when the cord is plugged in, and pressing the power button does nothing at all.

Interestingly, a few minutes ago I took it out of storage, (we got the computer months ago and gave up when we couldn't get it running) plugged it in by itself and it powered up just fine, the fan turned on and everything! So I opened it up and cleaned out some of the dust (I didn't have it plugged into a monitor or anything, I just wanted to see if it was still doing the same thing it had months ago) and, lo and behold, when I tried to turn it on again with everything plugged in, I got the blinking/clicking green light and no power up.

What could be the problem here? I know the whole thing isn't totally shot because it DID power up just fine a few minutes ago. But now we're back to the blinking clicking light (instead of the steady green glow that usually happens when the power supply cord is plugged in). It leads me to believe that something's loose, but I don't dare mess with the power supply box unless I know what I'm doing...

Another question is, if the power supply isn't fixable, would it be possible to replace it with the power supply ... Read more

If you press the power button first time: the power button get's a amber light & 1 3 4 diagnostic get a flickering amber light.
If you turn the computer off and press the power button again it will turn on and work as normal.
I have been able to diagnose that the PSU is the problem.
I would like to know if I can continue to use these desktops in their current state? Are there any potential consequences / risks involved?
Also can the PSU can be repaired? If so how?

I just recently Inhearted a computer from school, after my IT teacher couldn't get it to run. Both my IT teacher and I thought for sure it was the power supply or the power switch. The Problem is that the computer dosn't do anything at all when you press the power button. My teacher told me that when he first started having the problem he would press the power button, and maybe Once out of every fifty times it might boot up. then the problem got worse, and only started like every 100th time, now it dosn't work at all. The system is a Used MDG with a 1.5GHZ cpu, and mostly all stock parts. The system came with a stock 300 watt PSU. When I first took it apart, I pulled out the power supply completely, and tried to put in another one, that I had laying around, however it had the wrong connector, so I just put the old one back in. when I put the PSU back in, it seemed to have power, as I could hear the electricty following thorugh it, and a green Led light would light up on the mother board, however if I pushed the power button, it would still do nothing, the CPU fan wouldn't even turn. The only time I actually notice the CPU Fan do a quick turn, is if I disconect the power from the PSU for a long period of time, then reconnect it. So I went to the local computer store tonight with the switch, and the man tested for me, and it did end of being a faulty switch, so I purchased I brand new. I then put it into the computer, and still nothing, and believ... Read more

Hello I tried to install a power supply with my dell now I get a steady amber light after I removed the power supply since it had showed me an amber light. With the old power supply, I still get the steady amber light. I noticed that on the LED in the back, I got a yellowish amber colored light as well. With the new power supply it didn't have the exact four pin layout of my old one but had an eight pin layout that was seperated so that I could ease a four pin in with my computer. Did this blow out the motherboard? The major thing I did was remove the heatsink which had pins connected to it when I tried to install this video card but I noticed that some of the pins bent out of shape so I got a new heatsink only this time the heatsink I recieved has no pins. I installed the heatsink and tried to boot the pc but it won't boot only the fan spins and none of the indicator lights in the front turn on. Is the motherboard or processor dead? Thanks.

Hi guys, this is my very first forum post ever in my life and I hope I get super help.So there I was working on my computer one day. I was downloading a youtube video with a program that has scheduled shutdown computer option upon download completion. I turned that on and turned off my monitor. After about 1-2 mins I noticed the power and HDD indicator lights in front of the CPU casing is turned off so I thought for some reason my pc probably turned off. I tried turning it on by pressing the power button and at the same time turned my monitor on. It turned on with a light-brown colored background so I quickly hit restart but then it won't turn on. I plugged by USB in hoping it would try to boot from the USB (my bios settings primary boot is set to removable devices). Then I pressed the power button again but THIS TIME I noticed that a very bad wire-burning type smell is coming out so I instantly turned EVERYTHING off. Later I opened my CPU casing and tried smelling the devices and found that probably the smell is coming from my second (and newer) hard disk that is about 10 months old. So, finding no hope and ideas I threw myself to computerhope.com's forum from my school laptop...please anyone help me out ASAP!Note that when I still try to turn my the pc on the power supply fan, the ethernet lights and even the DVD-rom drive works; so I am totally confused! My pc is  Intel Core2duo, 2GB ram/memory, 256 internal video memory, primary hard-disk=160gb and secondary... Minimal boot is where I'd start. If motherboard has integrated video use that, disconnect all drives, and just have the motherboard set up with 1 ram stick, and try to boot. If you get it to boot then shut it down and add 1 component and boot up again if no boot then you found the cause if it boots then move to next component to add and repeat. If no boot on minimal boot, then swap single Ram stick with another if you had more than 1 stick. If still no minimal boot swap power supply. If still no minimal boot its something local to motherboard. Unistall CPU and check for damage and reinstall it, apply thermal compound and heatsink and try another boot. If still no boot, I'd buy or use a different motherboard unless you have a POST card to work with and want to troubleshoot deeper.Cooked component smell is not a good thing, if you can localize the smell and find burned traces or parts that would be a help in determining if this can be saved or if you need to start a new build. I have only seen one hard drive smoke before and that was my friend way back when SATA drives first came out and it had a P connection as well as SATA power. He hooked up both and cooked it. On a small warning in the box it warns not to plug power to both. I'd doubt if your drive is one of these drives given that you mentioned that it is 10 months old.

I have an k410-573 desktop that has an 180w power supplyIBM LITEON 54Y8817 180W THINKCENTRE DESKTOP POWER SUPPLY PS-5181-09VSI was wondering will another power supply like PS-5281 which is a 280w power supply work in place of the one I have now? If there is another one that will work what kind is it.

Answer:changing 180w power supply in k410 to higher watt power supply

hi mehilton,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

You can check your system's Hardware Maintenance Manual and check (page 45)
this is a Part list and upgrade option. You'll find the Power Supply compatible for your system and its part number.

You can call Lenovo Spareparts (877 4536686 and prompts 4....3....2)    about the part number if you're planning to purchase one.

Technically a Generic ATX PSU will work on your system but the problem is some connectors on a K410 PSU is specially made for it and a feature like the Power mode Ambient light will require a original K410 PSU
see this discussion.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

The eXtreme Power Supply Calculator contains 1300+ CPUs including latest processors from Intel and AMD, latest graphics cards from NVIDIA, AMD and more!
The recommended total Power Supply Wattage gives you a general idea on what to look for BUT it is NOT a crucial factor in power supply selection! Total Amperage Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most important, followed by the +5V amperage and then the +3.3V amperage. eXtreme Power Supply Calculator

Answer:Use eXtreme Power Supply Calculator to calculate Power Supply Wattage

oh ! this is cool. Asus used to offer a online tool for calculating the recommended power supply. This really does help.

I have 2 failed Z800 power supplies (1150 watt version). After some internet research I am led to believe this is a common problem and related to the PS capacitors. Since I do not know how to do this capacitor replacement (yet). I thought I would buy a new PS. However, I do not want to buy a Z800 PS since it seems to me to be a defective design. Can anyone chime in and tell me if the new z840 1125 watt PS will work with my older z800? I have called HP support and spoken with the correct support people on this and they were not able to confirm if the Z840 PS will work (fit) on the z800. The closest confirmantion I recieved was that if it fits then it should work. Instructions to fix the capacitors:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Z800-power-on-issue... Same issue I am facing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f563JGeoxaw On a side note, can anyone recommend a good service tech to make such capacitor repares in Southern California or insrtuctions on how to make this repair (with pictures). Thanks

I have a W540, which currently uses a 170W power supply (20V 8.5A) I also just recieved a docking station for a P50 which has a 230W power supply showing 20V 11.5A. The connectors look the same, but I'm hesitant to try the 230W power supply in the W540. Should this be ok to use the 230W power supply with the W540?

Answer:Power Supply Question - Can I use the 230W power supply with a W540?

230 watts is the maximum power supply, it only supplies the power needed by the computer. I sold my W540, so i can't test this for you. But i do the use the ThinkPad X1 Carbon with the 230 watts power adapter without any problem.

Hello,
unfortunately my power supply of my new sp3 is broken. I already ordered a new one, but it will take some
time until the new power supply will be there. I really would like to use my sp3, so I have been thinking about replacing the broken power supply by another one. From my old asus netbook I have a power supply with 12V and 3.0 A output.
Is it possible to use this one for loading?
I have been searching in different forums about the replacement of a power supply, I always read, that an egual voltage is necessary and that the amperage can be higher, the device should handle the correct amperage.
What do you think about this?
Thanks!

Answer:SP3: Replace broken power supply through laptop power supply

I don't see how. Isn't the proprietary connection the segment that is connected to the power supply? (the big brick)

Hello there!

I've been having trouble with my computer as of late. I just installed a new motherboard, CPU, and hdd. I switch on my computer and it works fine. But then I restart my computer and my monitor screen is black. I check my video card (ATI 4870 1GB), and there's 3 out of 4 lights on when I turn my computer on.

That means that my card isn't getting enough power, I think? Well, I leave it off for a day or two and turn it on today. The power light on the back of my rig is flickering and the light on my mobo is on, but nothing else is. Also, my computer won't turn on.

The mobo I installed is a ASUS M4A79T Deluxe with an AMD Phenom II 955+ CPU and a seagate 1TB HDD. Along with that are 2 DVD drives, a WD 320GB HDD, an ASUS 4870 1GB video card, and a Razer Barracuda AC-1 audio card.

My power supply is a SolyTech SL-8600EPS 600 Watt PSU. Actual wattage is 585 watts

Any idea on the problem?

Thanks for your time...reading my wall of text.

Answer:Flickering PSU light.

If the light on the back of the psu is flicking and your pc wont turn on and post I would say it's a bad PSU.

Built computer from scratch about 6 years ago.. gigabyte motherboard, XP Professional.. no issues at all until two days ago. My daughter noticed that the "computer light" stays on after the computer has been powered off. (the light with the "light bulb" pic to show the computer is on)

It has flickered fast, slowed and stopped. Or just slowed down and keeps blinking. When the computer was powered off yet still plugged in the wall, I nudged the computer and the light started flickering...

A small type of power surge?
Something still running that should not be?
Something old and this is a sign of dying out?

Any suggestions? Thanks

The WAN light on my W500 is either on constantly, from turn on to shutdown, or flickering.  I've no idea what's activating it, or how to turn it off and am sure, at the very least, it's a drain on the battery. I'm running Vista 32bit and after that, everything's fairly standard.  Anyone got an idea about this?

Does it at logon screen, not in safe mode. Maybe other computers do this to but I can't see it because the activity light is smaller. Does anyone else notice this on there machines as well?

I don't know if I have a problem or not.I installed a new Visioneer 9420 flat bed scanner for the wife last night.Afterward it would not conncet to IE when I would click on it. I have Joink Wireless.  Mozilla Firefox would load right up but not IE, kept saying I had to reconnect to the internet, like it was on dial up and working offline. I did the reset web settings and did the repair for the wireless connection. Got that lined back out, then noticed the red light flickering on the tower. It flickers from just a little to bright red depending on what your doing. What the heck is this all about, or is this just something thats normal but just caught my eye? Nothing seems to be going on performance wise. I am running all the scans to check for problems. It seems I remember seeing something about this on here recently, but I could not find the post. Today I was doing some electrical work and shut off the breaker to my office. After I was done I turned it back on the breaker and went to turn on my Dell and it wouldn't start. I'm not sure if it was on or off when I hit the breaker, but it was plugged into a surge protector thingy. I push the power button, and nothing happens, just this constant light on the front keeps flickering, like a light bulb when it doesn't have a good connection. Heres a picture.

I'm not sure whats up, I';ve had it unplugged for a few hours and still won't even try to start. Everything else plugged into the surge protector works fine (printer, desk lamp, pencil sharpener, etc) What could have happened?

Update: I've had it plugged in for a while now and the lights seem to be flashing in a patturn, pause 7 blinks than another pause. This light is green, not sure if it means anything.

So recently I have noticed that my laptop would randomly shut down when I'm in the middle of work, and the only way to fix it was to take the battery out and wait half an hour.Sometimes it takes longer to reset, or sometimes doesn't at all... I'm currently looking at my laptop which has a flickering power indicator (faster than the sleep mode one, it goes from sleep mode to super flicker). I have no idea how to fix it because I can't even force restart it. It keeps going back to this fast flicker. Here is a video to help: http://youtu.be/Pl1MV5NIT9QIf anyone has any ideas please let me know, thanks.

When my computer gets around 21% or less battery the backlight on the left side of the screen starts flickering in and out. It gets worse as the battery gets lower. Has anyone else seen this problem, any idea what I can do aside from keep the battery more charged? Would this be a warranty fix? Thanks

Answer:W541 flickering back light

I would send a note to the warranty department , does not sound normal , unless it's a low battery warning feature . If it were happening on my computer I'd want it fixed , does not sound like something that will improve with time .One more thing , do you have a second battery you can borrow to test if it is a battery problem or computer problem ? Put second battery in and see if screen flickers when it's below 21% , i no it's your battery , if yes it's something in the computer

My laptop was working fine yesterday, charging and powering on an off normally. It updated without my telling it to. When it was complete (since it said don't turn computer off until finished) I either just shut the lid or I shut it down when it was done. This morning when I wake up and try to turn it on it won't power up. Then I noticed that the power button was blinking, like it is in sleep mode, tried pressing 10 times then holding down power button for 30-60 seconds and still nothing. Next I saw that although the power is plugged in the battery light won't come on. I don't know if it is charging (it could be dead). I tried a bunch of different outlets and that isn't the issue. I also listened to the computer and there is a very soft high pichted noise that dissapears if you unplug it, and that when you hit the power button and it starts blinking, the sounds changes fom high to lower pitch and back again over and over. But no other sounds or fans kicking on or drive spinning. I am pretty sure it isn't the power cord but have no way of checking. And I can't remove the battery without voiding the warrenty. Anyone have any advice, besides calling to have Lenovo send me a box to send it back to Lenovo since it is only 4 months old and still under warrenty?

Answer:Lenovo Edge 15 laptop 80K9 battery light won't come on, power light blinks

Suggest you eliminate problem 1. Do you have spare power supply unit? Worth trying that first. Your battery may be in sleep mode and won't wake up as battery is drained and hence needs charging. 2. You can go to local retailer and suspect a good one (John Lewis) will let you charge it for 30 mins. Ideally go back to person you bought it from. 3. Once you are in use restore to go back to last working point. I have to telll you the support from Lenovo and Microsoft was very very very disappointing. I tried to even return the PC and swop for HP as mine is only 2 months old. However, the answer was send back to Lenovo. Hope you find a way to get it charged

dell xps m2010 wont start up ,blue power light and bluetooth light stay on,i have been searching posts in other forums as well as this one and i thought i`d narrowed it down to the graphics card,i was right to an effect,my approach was to take the xps apart following dells website documents, while i had the top (dvd drive) off ,i noticed that the graphics card screws were really loose (this was my first job)...i tightened these. The top(dvd drive ) i re-connected ,but propped it up at an angle so i could still see motherboard and parts,(warning!be carefull!!)electric!! ...attached power cable and pressed power button after half a dozen times pressing this it came to life.I noticed my fans were working and thought this might not be my motherboard after all ,no overheating happening...then it froze on windows xp ??it was a start !another 6 to ten times pressing power button it worked again this time not freezing.went into bluetooth with usb mouse and paired keyboard ,made system restore point and restarted .It took maybe 4 times with it being glitchy(freezing ..not powering up) ,but when it does load xp without freezing try restarting windows xp and then it eventually finds its feet!!!my xps 2010 is running ok now.jimb

Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

I will turn it on and after a minute or two the monitor goes to power save mode and the hard disk light goes from off/blinking to solid on and the power light stays on.

I have reinstalled the operating system and i thought that fixed it. I had SP 1 i installed all of my updates and SP2 and it starting to do it again (it will do it in SP1 but not nearly as often or when i run a flash heavy program: PSP Video or even the Scion website).

It will not do it at all in BIOS as i did every test on the diagnostics page for my hard drive (all pass) though if it turns off it usually turns on and runs dskchk and it wont stay on for that

In safe mode it is also fine it will not turn off once

I dont know what i did last as it was fine then i was gone for a month and I had it unplugged etc., came back hooked it up and it started doing it after a little while

I have taken a can of air to every inch, switched the Flat cord going to the HDD from the Motherboard.

All fans run fine

Thats all i can think of right now ask me anything else you need to know

I'll give this forum a couple of days/a week maybe then i'll take it to a local shop to diagnose it

Much thanks to anyone who has any idea's

Hello,
Was experiencing general issues with my windows profile after windows updates last patch Tuesday so I initiated a system restore and let it run today.  After completion laptop turned off (instead of rebooting?)

Pressing the power button: Power button turns white (on) for ~30 seconds, then laptop turns off (indicated by power button light)
no fans
no screen (back-light or otherwise)
no POST codes - beep codes or light codes.
no other visible activity

During that period nothing else happens, unless I press the power button again. If I do this
The fans spin up momentarily
The system then powers off (as indicated by the white power light)

I've tried:

Disconnect power/battery and hold power button (60 seconds)
Power system on with just battery
Power system on with just wall power
Remove mSATA HD and repeat the above
Disconnect video connector and repeat above
Remove mPCI WiFi module and repeat above
Completely disassemble and remove CMOS battery (tested at 3.1 VDC) for 60 seconds, reassemble and repeat above

All with no change in behavior

I am able to get a light code 2 Amber / 3 White if I remove the RAM module (as expected)
D + PWR diagnostics cycle successfully through a range of colors then nothing

Laptop is 2 months out of warranty.  Any help debugging the issue is appreciated!

I have an Acer Aspire - 5739G with a GeForce GT 240M

Yesterday, without any cause that I can figure out, my laptop shut down unexpectedly. On reboot, I noticed a faint, high pitched noise, and once at my desktop, I saw that the screen was flickering slightly. The flickering is very pronounced with a white background, but I hardly notice it if the screen is darker, during a movie or something. The flickering by itself isn't too bad, but it's hard to stare at a light webpage for more than a few minutes.

The noise is usually always on. It is faint enough that I can sort of ignore it, or with headphones it is completely blocked out, but its new and definitely there. If I let the computer idle for awhile, with the flickering still happening, it seems to go away, but then on any kind of activity, the noise starts up again.

Im about 1 month past the 1 year parts warranty from Newegg, but I'm panicking a bit because I leave on a month-long trip in 8 weeks, and absolutely need this laptop in top shape. I'm tech-savvy enough to build my PC, but I've never really opened up a laptop. I've left it off overnight, and also updated my video drivers.

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.

(Old posts mentioned flickering, through the inverter, but it seemed like theirs was more pronounced, and didn't have the noise)

Answer:Laptop monitor, light flickering + noise

The noise could be an electrical arc, is it a sort of soft hissing ?

My guess would be the inverter is either on it's way out or a poor connection in the high voltage area is arcing. Either way I would turn it off or it could get worse.
The inverter turns a low voltage to a high one to power the backlight which lights up the screen, so the backlight itself could also be to blame.

It's possible to fit a new inverter yourself if you are good with your hands, you could probably get one on Ebay quite cheaply. The backlight could be harder to find and fit and they are said to be very fragile.

If you don't think you can fix this yourself try getting an estimate of the cost from a local repairer.

Hi Wacky78900,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Y500 Laptop is not turning ON after playing game and turning OFF manually, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and check the issue. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

If the issue persists even after performing the Flee-Power and as the computer is in warranty, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back for further queries.

This just started happening recently. The power indicator light (near the power plug) does not turn on and Windows does not recognize when the adapter is plugged in; the power icon and cusomized power saving "on battery" behavior reflect that. HOWEVER, the battery does charge. The "lightning bolt" charging light on the front between HDD and system power lights comes on and the battery recharges if not at 100%. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this? Is it more likely a Windows or hardware problem? The BIOS does not have the power adapter test mentioned here, and I could not find the software download for the Smart Adapter functionality (this laptop was installed with clean, non-OEM OS, so any OEM software had to be added manually). Thanks in advance,Kyle

Hello! I have been having this problem for about a week now, ever since I set my old computer back up in my room. The problem started when I left my computer alone for a while when I went out (the computer was working fine and I had just finished transfering pictures to my computer from my camera). I came back and the power light on the front if the case was on, but the battery light was off. The monitor had also gone into sleep mode. I turned off the computer since I knew whatever I was going had already been saved and exited out of, unplugged everything (including the monitor and PC/Monitor cable) and plugged it back in and turned them on. The monitor goes straight to power saving mode (sleep mode). The PC is definitely receiving power, the keyboard's caps and num lock keys flash, the wireless mouse's light flashes, the pc fans turn on, and both of the power and battery lights turn on. But, after a second, the battery light turns off, and the only light I can see through it is the power indicator's light bleeding through. The strange thing is, I've been able to get it to work before, about 2 times actually. Both of those successful boots happened either when I ignored the thing for so long or left it unplugged over night, but had already forgot it didn't work last time. But it did those times. So I tried to leave it unplugged all last night. Just woke up, and... still nothing. I really need to to get those pictures to my mom, so if someone could ple... Read more

alright, I just got this inspiron 6000 from my sister that didnt work. she said nothing would happen at all. well it turned out the power light would go on, caps lock light blink for a few seconds and it would turn off. somehow the memory wasnt in the slot very well. bam, got it working, dumped all her pics and crap to a external hdd, and wanted to wipe it all out and start over. she is sending me a xp disc, but for now I just figured Id go back to 2k cuz I have that disc and when I get the disc go back to xp.

anyways, I couldnt figure out how to format the drive, because obviously xp was running off of it. anyways, I kept trying all the del - f2 - f8 - f12 to get a dos prompt before windos would load but I couldnt. so I figured Id just put the 2k disc in because I thought I remember that it formats it right before it installs. but it asked me where to install and the disk was partitioned and I wanted one drive letter so I cancelled the install, before it was actually installing though, said f3 to quit and I hit f3. now when I try to power it up, the power light comes on, the hdd light comes on for maybe 1-2 seconds max, then the cd drive light comes on and it spins up, then stops, and the screen just stays black, never did anything either. just black the whole time.

I cant use a floppy to try anything because no floppy drive. I tried starting up with the win2k disc in but doesnt work. I searched on my desktop running win2k and it showed a tutorial for making a usb flas... Read more

Answer:Windows XP, power light, hdd light for 1 sec, black screen

oh, also, i did try and search and most I found were a black screen after the self test or the windows logo, not right away.

also, dont think it matters, but when the lights go out, it is at the point where hitting the power button again, the computer instantly turns off.

also, just checked, and its nothing to do with the lcd. I just hooked up my monitor, and my monitor tells me when there is no signal, and it just stayed black, then when it was unplugged from the laptop that is when it said no signal.

Hey guys,

I recently built a new system and bought a:

"Xtreme Series RX850-S-B 850W Continuous @40C ,80 PLUS Certified, ATX12V v2.2 & EPS12V v2.91, SLI Ready CrossFire Ready, Active PFC "Compatible with Core i7, i5" Power supply.

This power supply has a little LED light inside of it. Every once and a while it would randomly start flickering and making clicking noises upon each flicker. The clicking is fairly loud and the flicker fairly bright, no naturally I was concerned. I contacted Rosewill and they sent me a replacement. This new one hasn't been flickering or clicking until Today, about 2 weeks after I received it in the mail. Surely a second PSU would not have the exact same symptoms as the first PSU? I figured there must be something I am doing wrong. Has anyone had this problem in the past?

System Specifications:
Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)
AMD FX-8350 8-Core Processor
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Bios Version: 1708
16G Kingston DDR3 1600 Dual Channel Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 670

Answer:Rosewill PSU Led Light flickering + making clicking noises

There isn't anything you can be doing wrong. If it's connected properly, the PC will work (which appears to be the case).

In general, Rosewill hardware is mediocre at best. In any case, it sounds like it's failing. Time to get a replacement.

Just got back from vacation and moved my mouse and keyboard but nothing came on screen. Changed batteries, reset, nothing. Have tried a manual reboot but still nothing. I've noticed on the front panel there is an amber warning light flickering with pictures of discs below it. What does that mean? I pushed the button below that, the tray opened and there is no disc inside. I pushed the button below that and nothing happened. Any ideas what to do or try next? It's the P6000 series and I think I was running IE 7. There is power to tower hence the amber light and the light blue button on top is lit and power to monitor, remains orange, never gets to green. Screen remains black.

Answer:HP not booting up, amber warning light flickering at times

Would help if you posted the exact model of HP so we can find the manual and decipher the message lights.

I have a T61 which has Intel graphic card. It is seven years old and at times has a noisy fan.Very recently it started to have problem with its LCD, it starts with slight flickering of light intensity from corners of screen, here and there, eventually covering the whole screen, goes away and comes back, happens for few seconds, the pattern repeats for few times, then big (screen-wide) patches of back starts to cover the lower 1/4th, one-half, 3/4th of screen, flickering between the screen content and black screen, till they cover the whole screen after 30-60 seconds. At that moment, the screen is very dark but with a close look, it is still possible (but very hard) to read it. Connecting it to external monitor (through its VGA), it is working very well. Showing same screen on both LCD and external monitor at the same time, the picture on external is solid, but picture on LCD can have this issue. At the moment of writing this message, the problem seems to not happening!! but it was happening during the past whole week including few minutes ago. I searched online and here in the forum and read few posts, and found about these issues:- some T61's have Nvidia GPU and thermal effects over the time and stress on the package or solder balls can make loose connections (this is probably not my case since the interface to graphic card is by Intel)- problem with LCD itself (it is working fine just right now)- problem with graphic card (it is working very well over the VGA to external mo... Answer:T61 LCD display flickering with big patches of black and going to dark (very low light) afterwards

>  the screen is very dark but with a close look, it is still possible (but very hard) to read it.
That sounds like a defective CCFL backlight or inverter.

>- problem with bulb inside the screen (maybe the cause, but somehow decided for the last few minutes to working fine)
A CCFL is essentially a high intensity fluorescent bulb. One failure mode is flickering.

>- problem with inverter (don't know yet what this part it)
The inverter is a power supply that converts the low voltage DC used in the rest of the ThinkPad to high voltage to drive the CCFL. I would expect that to fail catastrophically rather than cause flickering.

What to do?

CCFLs backlights are relatively inexpensive ($10 to $15 on eBay) but they can be difficult to replace because they're delicate. You may prefer to replace the entire LCD panel assembly or even the entire top cover assembly (which also includes the inverter card.)

The Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T61 provides detailed instructions for doing this sort of stuff if you'd like to see what's involved and decide what you feel comfortable doing.

HP Compaq Presario V2000 laptop running Windows XP Home SP2

Several days ago, I don't know what precipitated it, the machine started
a jerky behavior. Let's say when playing videos, the sound and pic
would momentarily stop several times a minute. The hard drive light
would light up at the same time, flickering. And it seems the CPU
usage would go to a hundred percent off and on. Because of this
hesitating, everything runs slow.

I'm running AVG free and it's up to date. I also have Windows
Defender.

I tried using CHKDSK (via device manager) and it found several
errors and fixed them. But still the problem persists.

I suspect the hard drive is failing, but I don't know how to read a SMART report. Is the HD failing? Is that the problem? Where can I learn how to understand this report?

I have Everest Home Edition. Here's the SMART report:

I've returned from living in the US and have a Satellite M35X-S149 notebook computer. As it was purchased in the US, it has a power supply that runs off a US two pin plug and the power lead has only a two way lead joining into the battery.

I would like to know if I can purchase a UK power supply for use here in the UK. Just so you know what I've tried already: I found a Toshiba power lead with a 3-pin plug on the end and tried to fit this into the battery pack, but that doesn't work as the battery only has 2 holes for lead to go into and UK leads have 3 connectors not 2 so that didn't work!

I've now realised I need to buy the whole power supply and am not sure which one to get.

Can anyone advise me if this is possible and what to purchase for my model of notebook?

Thanks.

Answer:Switching from a US power supply to a UK supply on Satellite M35X-S149

I think you will need an new European AC adaptor.
I think a AC adaptor for a European series like M30X could be compatible with yours M35X.

The M30X supports this one:
PA3396U - 65W - 19V - 3.42A - 100~240V

You can order it from the Toshiba ASP in UK

Why would a computer take hours and days before a display? When the system is turn on very ofter the power light keeps blinking and the harddrive light is on but nothing shows on the monitor for hours or days and may not at all. Powering off and re-powering rarely helps it just have to be left alone and comes on whenever if ever.. Thanks for help

Answer:The power light keeps blinking and the harddrive light is on

Try a new signal cable from PC to monitor. If no change, try a new graphics card.If still no change, test the hard drive with "Seagate SeaTools for DOS".Click the "Download" tab here: http://www.seagate.com/support/down...The download is an ISO file, so you'll also need to install "IMGBurn" from here:http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/Use IMGBurn to create a CD from the ISO file, then boot your faulty computer from it. The testing program will open. Select the hard drive and test it. If it fails the test you need to replace the hard drive. If hard drive passes the test it's okay, so test the RAM modules with "Memtest86" which is also an ISO file, so you need to create a CD from that too:http://www.memtest.org/

My Dell Inspiron 1545 has been sitting for a while, and when I went to plug it it and try to use it, it would not turn on. All I got is a pulsing power light like when it's in sleep.
I recently replaced the battery as well as the charger, because the original battery was shot and the charger was in horrible shape. I also replaced the power jack a while back because the pins inside were bent and the laptop got no power.
I had successfully used the laptop for a while after replacing these parts, but now it won't turn on. Whether I'm on battery, AC power, or both, it only flashes/pulses when I press the power button. If I hold the power button, it will shut off.
What's wrong here? I have checked and re-seated both memory modules, also testing both slots and nothing changed.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 Won't Power On, Pulsing Power Light Like When In Sleep Mode

Hi CARCRAZY98,
Thank you for the update.
Well, when you power on the system, if you hear the fan spinning and the HDD turning on, connect an external monitor and check if there is any display.
Reseat the cmos battery and check when possible. Since the system draws power from the adapter, at this point, I would not suspect the adapter. Also, remove the memory modules and disconnect the HDD and check if the system comes on and beeps - indicating a missing HDD / memory.
As advised in my previous post, if nothing works and the indications do not change, I would suspect the motherboard.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Inspiron 17R won't start.  Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.
The power light goes on for a second and the first light on the top right blinks for a second with the power light and that's it.  If I hold the power button for longer, it keeps repeating the same.

Answer:Inspiron 17R won't start. Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove the base cover and memory modules;  reinstall both.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery, the battery is faulty.
If it still won't power up  after the foregoing, the mainboard is bad.

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.
Thanks!

So my N21 chromebook seems to have a AC connector issue, most likely on the chromebook itself. as seen in the photo and video, the connector seems very loose, and no light comes on when plugged. it doesnt "click" when plugging in like other laptops, it just "slides" in and slides out very easily https://goo.gl/photos/5jujCxawE3AubxvP7 i tested the AC power adapter (official) with a multimeter while it is plugged into outlet, and it shows 20V which means it SHOULD work ok.  but obviously does not when plugged in, I feel it's very loose and when i looked into replacement AC adapters there seems to be TWO different connector sizes:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-OEM-Lenovo-Chromebook-N21-45W-20V-2-25A-3mm-AC-Adapter-ADLX45DLC3A-...  <-- 3mm X 1mm http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Chromebook-N21-Notebook-20V-2-25A-45W-Power-AC-Adapter-Charger-Cable-... <--- 4mm x 1.7mm What I have is the 3mm X 1mm , and i'm thinking it might be NOT charging because it is too loose and not touching. So will buying the 4mm X 1.7mm work as it is "tighter"?  But why is the official one loose?

Answer:Chromebook N21 Power AC Connector , not charging / no power light, loose? Replacement size confusion

I would presume that the power adapter that came with your Chromeboosk is the correct one, which should be part number 5A10H70353 (see link below).      If it was working fine before and just started acting up, it is probably a problem with the jack itself, and not the size of the power plug.     If it is under warranty it would be covered, but if not under warranty, the part needed to fix it is part number 5C10H70350  $12.95 USD and is available from the link below.    If the system is not under warranty, instructions on how to replace the DC-in cable begin on the bottom of page 35 in the Lenovo Cromebook N21 Hardware Maintenance Manual and requires some disassembling of your Chromebootk, but if not comfortable in doing it yourself, it should only take a good laptop tech about an hour to replace. Note:   Before buying an parts, I would recommend that you go to http://pcsupport.lenovo.com, click on the Detect My Serial Number, and then click on the Parts & Accessories link to ensure that the parts you purchase match the exact Machine Type-Model or Machine Type of your system..    5C10H70350 Lenovo Ct Cables Internalhttps://lenovo.encompass.com/item/10633467/Lenovo/5C10H70350/Ct_Cables_Internal 5A10H70353 Lenovo Ad Ac Adaptershttps://lenovo.encompass.com/item/10638409/Lenovo/5A10H70353/Ad_Ac_Adapters Hardware Maintenance Manual Le... Try the following...

1. Take out (or take it off) the charger.
2. Next take out the battery
3. Now hold down power button for 20 seconds and then rinsert battery.
4. Now put it on the charger again

NOTE: Make sure charger is plugged into the main power supply (not an extension cord, surge protector, etc.)

Sometimes, when the device is not plugged in directly, it doesn't get the power it needs. Holding the power button, while you restart it, clears out the temporary ram (no it won't delete anything you have saved) and will give the device access to the ram it needs.

I took out the hard drive and it works on my desktop. I took out the ram and tried to boot it up but nothing.

I am assuming it's probably a dead motherboard.

How can i test to see if the motherboard using a multi-meter?
I thought it was where you plug in the power adapter but I already tested some parts and i got 19V there, so i know it's not that.

I also tested where the battery is charged and it got .049v, so i know its working
But i tested the little white connector where the heatsink fan is going, but i didn't get any volts there, isnt there supposed to be some volts there?

I'm not sure whats wrong, anyone have any experience with power?
