A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

Question: A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

I received that message right now and then it launched "Intel Matrix Storage Console". So it says my C drive may fail. How does this happen? Is it because I only have 30 gigabytes left in my harddrive (out of a total of 250 gb)?
Also sometimes my computer just shuts down for no reason (i've had this problem once in a while). Is that due to overheating or leaving the computer on too long?

Preferred Solution: A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

Mechanical hard drives do fail, they do not last forever. I would back up your data and replace the drive ASAP.

Check your temperatures and post results. It could be heat or a faulty power supply.

i get the little pop-up bubble at the corner of my screen, but when i click to see which hard drive it is i get:

All hard drives are okay
Detail
System is fuctioning normally.

i don't understand then what's wrong!
should i be worried?

Answer:"A hard drive in the system reports that it may fail"

Welcome to Tech Forums, rowza!

If you hear a clicking sound from the hard drive, then you should be worried. But regardless if it says the hard drive is function normally, you should ALWAYS, always backup your important data.

That message though could be telling you that there is a possibility that the hard drive might fail. So it's best to take pre-caution and backup, as well as be ready to replace the hard drive.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi, i have kazaalite v1.7.1 when I open up kazaalite a little box will pop up and say "Write Error!" Then when I download music it says "Failed" under the status bar. But when I look in my download folder the song is in there. Any ideas?
i tried reinstalling it. dont work

Answer:Kazaalite reports that file downloads fail..

i would suggest a complete Scandisk operation, as well as a virus scan. delete the program from the add remove program in the control panel, then reboot and run scandisc from the system tools section of the start menu. choose the complete type, not quick and let it fix any errors.

then reboot and reinstall the program.

Few years ago i stored some music/video files on blank discs.

Just recently i decided to copy the music files from those cds to my hard drive.

When i insert the cd into the computer, the procedure begins normally. some albums are copied to my desktop without a problem. The noise is normal when the cd drive goes to work.

But then a certain album might give problems. The cd drive will copy each track but then it will struggle to copy a certain file. The noise from the cd drive goes silent all of a sudden. Then there is no progress and applications might freeze if i try to use them. To cancel this i have to eject from the cd drive.

Anyone know whats going on here and how i can copy all the media files from the cds to my pc please?

The cds are not scratched. The files were saved to dvd+r discs.

Answer:certain files fail to copy from cd to desktop harddrive... help pls

I can only think of a dirty disk (finger prints?). Wash it with detergent and cotton cloth making movements from inside to the edge.

i have a Q190 for 12 months, the harddrive fail last week.  right after the warranty expired oct 25. i install a new harddrive in it.i have usb key with win10 on it, as if i have to install window, better go with win10.  Now i need the window 8 key to install, as it doesnt have a label with win key anymore.on the menu it said win8 key is in BIOS, i couldnt find it.any help ??thanks

Answer:Q190 harddrive fail, how to retrieve win8 key to restore ??

hi enook,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you have a Windows 10 product key then you can install Windows 10 right away and use the product key to activate it.

However, if you don't have a Win10 product key and you're planning to upgrade using the WIn8.1 key to Windows 10, you should:
1. Follow this guide on how to download a Win8.1 ISO (see Option 1) then check this guide on how to create a bootable Win9.1 USB flashdrive.

2. Reinstall Windows on the Q190 using the bootable flashdrive that you've created on Step 1 (the installer should automatically detect the Win8 product key in the BIOS and will automatically activate Windows).

In case you get issues activating the OS, you should activate by phone.

3. Insert your Win10 USB flashdrive (or copy the contents into the Q180) and navigate to X:\Sources\Setup.exe (this is the path of the Win10 installation files) and follow the prompts to upgrade Windows 10.

Note:

You can find the Win8.1 product using tools discussed in this article.
You can only activate Win10 if you have upgraded from an activated copy of Win8.1 or if you have a retail Win10 product key.

I recently bought a new Lenovo G780, as my old HP laptop failed on me. However, the harddrive from my HP was fine, so when I got the new computer I decided to just take the harddrive out of my HP and put it into my new Lenovo. I've got the drivers for everything else to work, except my wireless network adapter refuses to install drivers from any source I can find. The adapter is an Atheros AR9285. I've tried lenovo's online drivers, and have even bought Driver Manager and asked the support staff to find drivers that work for me. They said they found one that worked, but I tried installing it and it said that "This computer is not manufactured by Quanta Computers" and then didn't install it. I have them working on that right now. But seriously, if they don't find a solution, what could the problem be? And how do I get my network adapter working again?

Here is some additional important information:
-The harddrive they gave me came with windows 7 x64 home edition. I am using windows 7 x64 professional.
-The wireless network adapter works if I use the harddrive the computer came with
-I am a chemical engineering college student who needs internet to do his assignments, and this little netgear usb adapter my friend lent me isn't cutting it

Please help me. Let me know if you need any further information

Answer:Lenovo G780 replaced harddrive, network adapter drivers fail

Hello and welcome nitro Mate one thing I didn't see you mention is the Device Manager in Control Panel have you tried that yet? CP > Device manager > open it up like in pic right click the adaptor > it will ask you to look for updates - it may come back as the correct one or not. See pic first.

If not have a look at this thread Best Atheros AR 9285 Driver? - Tech Support Forum there maybe something in there.

Hi, my name is Stormy, I'm new to this forum since I really haven't had any issues in the past.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit on my desktop. I restarted it a few days ago to install SP1, it rebooted and started installing 3 updates. Once it reached 100% it kicked into System Repair. After running through it, it restarted and did the same thing. Now 3 days later, it's still in that process where it installs updates, goes to system repair, restarts and starts again.

I tried interrupting it and doing a System Restore, but even at the earliest date on it, it goes right back to that repetitive process. Now I can't get to any of my files or anything else on there. I'm stuck, and I need some help please!

Answer:Updates fail, System Repair fails, System Restore won't work

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

I purchased a Dell XPS 8900 and things have been great so far however on the order it says that the system should have a R9 370 however when I look in the device manager it reports it as a R7 370 - does anyone know what the situation with that is? have they put the wrong video card in my computer or is Windows 10 reporting the incorrect model?

Answer:System reports R7 370 but supposed to me R9 370

We never sold a R7 370 on this model? Did you buy this directly from Dell? One way to verify is to power down, open the case, take a flashlight and look on the video card for the Dell 5 digit part number. Post the part number and we can look it up.

The last microsoft updates that were downloaded failed to run properly and I had to roll back the machine a couple of days. When I do this I always get an error at the end saying system restore failed, it may be your anti-virus dadadada.
I disable the real-time protection but no matter. I still get this error but the machine does get rolled back. I don't understand why I am getting this error when things appear to be restored to an earlier date.. ???
Also, anyone else have problems with the last windows update release on Tuesday?
Machine is new last June win 7 i7 with an SSD....I bought the professional upgrade and downloaded it.
Thanks.

A fan of Advanced System Care, I don't normally use Webroot System Analyser. This one time, however, I thought I'd give Webroot a try. (I used "Run", not an install.) It was disappointing. Still, it did say one thing that concerned me, which ASC has never reported. Webroot says that,
"Not all ram can be used by your 32bit operating system."
I can find nothing on this anywhere on the web. I've also never heard of the problem before—so I'm left wondering if it is a problem fundamental to my arrangement of hardware or if it may just need a tweak somewhere.
My self-built Asus P5E System (Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600) has 4GB Corsair Ram—which, interestingly enough, Task Manager never has shown to be even half used.
Any advice?
regards,
Phrixos

Hi Folks,I am an absolute beginner to this, so please bear with me.I allowed a relative to upgrade my bios and now my ageing Athlon 2100+ (1.7 GHz, I think it was) is now reported under system info as an Athlon 1500+ 1.3GHzI'm not sure what exactly was done with this upgrade and (relative is now on a gap year round the world trip)Any ideas as to what to do in order to have my pc recognise the correct CPU.Do you need further information - if so what - I have a copy of everest home - which lists a whole pile of system info, which really means nothing to me - if that will help any.Cheers

Answer:Bios Update - System now reports lesser CPU

The most likely cause is that the fsb of the motherboard is running at it's lowest, basic setting. i.e. 100Mhz This would happen after a bios flash and it is usuall to reset it.You would need to go into the bios and change the setting to 133Mhz.If you can post the make and model of the motherboard, via everest. It should be easy to do.

Hi guys, I need your help!

I think the problems started 15th of January this year with a BSOD on my computer while i was browsing the web. Since then I have a feeling the problem has increased with more frequent

* freezes, where I'm unable to move the cursor and I'm forced to restart by turning off the computer

*BSOD where the computer automatically restarts, usually with an error report to read.

*The screen goes black but the computer is apparently still running with the fan going and everything.

This is the last error report I got after a BSOD today:

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 1000007e
BCP1: FFFFFFFFC0000005
BCP2: FFFFF80002B7F827
BCP3: FFFFF88002F80988
BCP4: FFFFF88002F801F0
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1

Typing in some of the error reports on google gave me a certain idea of what it could be, so I tried uninstalling AVG, and first uninstalling then reinstalling the ATI display drivers but to no avail.

During my first reinstallation attempt of the ATI display driver my computer crashed which caused the system upon startup to do a ''check disk''.

I haven't done a ramtest yet.

Originally this is a HP computer but I have upgraded the motherboard, CPU, graphics, and PSU.

Further info:

Antivirus: AVG (now uninstalled but I think I had the version known for causing crashes and system unstability for quite a while)

Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista Servie Pack 2I have had this laptop just over a year and have had nothing but problems from day one. It has crashed a thousand times and I have already done one clean reinstall last year. It has recently had a trojan which was fixed through this website. You can see what was done here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/255291/infected-with-trdldragentcikx/Since then it has crashed again a good few times, all different stop errors. I had to switch off the screen saver as that was making it crash. Internet Explorer is version 8. I much prefer Firefox, but took it off during malware fixing. IE stops working a lot. Recent problem report reported 300 or so problems, got that down to 250 by updating Skype and installing new chipset from Intel via the Dell website. I am really unsure about downloading drivers not from them although I keep getting given solutions that involve doing this from other websites. The other problem is that I cannot backup on to the D: drive. Every back-up attempt fails, it seems to be very full. I know there is a lot here, I don't know where to start either. It also did an interesting thing today of simply freezing with lots of back chunky lines all over the screen. Switched off and restarted and it has been fine, but I have never seen anything like it before.Thanks.

Answer:Problem reports 250 problems and cannot do a system restore

hi,,, as you say this pc has been faulty from day 1,,, i would consider sending it back and asking for a replacement,,,, in the uk a standard warranty lasts around 1 year,,,, but if it can be proved that the machine is not fit for purpose and that there is an inherent fault in the machine then your entitled to a replacement,,,, if there are similar consumer laws in the US then i would go down this route,,,, as you say a clean install never helped so at a guess its probably a faulty motherboard,,,,,
good luck.

I have a RAID 1 server with a 3.0GHZ processor. On occassion the POST screen reports the processor as 6.0GHZ and the BIOS screen reports it as 1.4GHZ. It may also return a "machine Check architecture error. After several reboots the error will go away and reappear later on a reboot. I want to be able to do this without resorting to separately loading each individual program.

Do any of you know of a program that will do this? That is, I seek a program that will show the approximate amount of sytem resources being used by each program that is running at a particular time.

HijackThis does not tell you any such thing. It makes no assertions whatsoever about whether something is good or bad. In addition, it is an outdated tool that by itself is extremely insufficient. If you believe you have malware problems, the correct thing to do is the below:

The Reliability and Performance Monitor found in Vista keeps a heap of data sets for response times, processes, configuration data, diagnostics, debug logs, registry keys and performance counters. This tool will help you diagnose windows errors, slow performance or anything else you would like it to help you track down.

1. Open the Start-Menu and search for Performance Monitor.
2. In the performance monitor there is a folder called "Data Collector Sets" found in the left open it and click "System"
3. Here you will find some default diagnostic tools to run on your vista machine, just right-click the name and click start, scroll down to the Reports folder to view your results.

You can also add your own customised monitors under the Data Collector sets folder for a more complete view of the systems performance handling, Just remember too many sets might slow your system down and vista allready runs a Reliability Monitor every hour.

This tool will point anyone in the right direction to solve issues they are having with vista or the hardware, Include the report in a support request and it can help diagnose the problem very quickly. Its proberly the most usefull feature found in vista.

Answer:Use Advanced System Diagnostics/Performance Reports for troubleshooting

First time poster. I'm an intermediate user who hasn't had many problems. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv6500 with Vista Home Premium w/Service Pack 1. For system maintenance I've loaded CrapCleaner, AVG free Anti-Virus vs. 8.5.325, AusLogics Disk and Registry Defraggers, and Advanced System Care vs. 3.3.1. I use all on a regular basis.

For the first time my ASC Security Analyzer just gave me a Hijack Analysis Report which I assume means it detects a potential threat. Reading through various forums I then downloaded and quick scanned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It detected nothing. My AVG also detected nothing, so now I'm confused and don't know what/if there should be a next step. Below is the Hijack Log, and any help would be really appreciated (and p.s. please let me know if there's other protections/utilities that I should be using):

My computer was infected with a virus, a pretty bad one. It wouldn't even get past the login screen, so I wiped the harddrive and installed the windows 7 beta copy I got during the public release. It worked fine for a few days, but now I have suspicious programs running, slow system, weird issues (tank manager appeared to be in the Win98 [classic style] style for a little after I opened it. ".freame micer has stopped working" has popped up multiple times. When I installed kaspersky I couldn't even run it. My system occasionally blinks and every window/the task bar appear to revert to the classic style.

I can't use the dds log due to using windows 7, it said it's not compatible.

Answer:Programs not running, system messed up, virus reports

I don't believe many of our tools will be compatible with Windows 7 beta as it is a beta program. Does it offer you the option to perform a System Restore? If so, try that first.

Ive read about many occurances of this problem, the one where after you use Disk Cleanup, in the "System Queue Error Reports" section, it reads a large size, mine was up at 65GB. I used the bug fix for the registry that was provided in one of the Tutorial on these forums, but it only reduced the size to 60GB. I decided that i would look at the Vista Problem and Solution Centre and decided to clear all the problems and history. I notice that gained about 8GB of space by doing this, and when i did another Disk Cleanup, it no longer showed "System Queue Error Reports" in the headings. I just wanted to ask whether this is the problem taken care of or is it just hiding to maybe rear its ugly head later on?

Hello there,
Recently setup my home wifi network, i had been noticing that my link speed to any device through my Dlink DIR 615 router, was always 65Mbps (as reported by the device), i searched around that i should set the channel width to 'auto 20/40mhz' to gain speed; however now that i did that, the link speed increased but only to 150Mbps as seen in the screenshot attached.

I could live with it but when i check the router's wireless status page, it reports the link to be 300'M' (which hopefully stands for Mbps) as it should be, sometimes its at 270M as well, but it always reports double of what windows and other devices like my android phone report...
i'm having a hard time figuring out whats going on with my setup.. i've checked for interference but there are hardly any other wifi networks in range.

Some more misc info about my setup: I use a Dlink Nano N300 adapter with my desktop...which was recommended for use with the router. Using WPA2-AES PSK, running the router in WPA2 only, wireless N only mode...Generally receiving full bars throughout my home.

Why is there a conflict in the link speed info displayed on my devices and the router?

Thanks

Answer:DIR 615 reports link at 300Mbps, windows reports 150Mbps

Some more details, i installed the crappy dlink software to obtain more information about it and surely got soemthing out of it.
In the attached screenshot, its written Tx/Rx:150Mbps/300Mbps...which basically means its transmitting at 150M, hence what it shows in Windows, which leads me to the question, why?

HiIn rebuilding my system I have inadvertently caused a fault. I have a separate internal hard drive that contains logical partitions for data and photographs. somehow in rearranging things I now have a disc that if connected causes windows 7 not to boot and if not connected windows boots normally.Examining the drive with Paragon recovery media shows the disc and the extended partition and the three logical partitions. The logical partitions are shown with partition id of 0x07 which I think is NTFS, fine but the file system is marked as invalid. I cannot attempt to do anything with the individual partitions, all greyed, out and I am afraid to allow Paragon to fix any BCD or other partition info in case I make it worse.Has anybody had any experience of this and a fix? Hi,

I seem to have the same problem as shaq237, who posted on 11/05/12. Every time I boot my computer a message pops up from McAfee that says a potentially harmful device driver has been blocked and it gives a path name to the file. Every time the computer boots the path name is the same but the file name changes. Using windows explorer to try and delete the file, the file is never there. If you look at the bottom of the Attach.txt file in the Event Viewer Messages From the Past Week section, the most recent message is on line number 3 with some earlier boot-time messages below it. I have run a full scan with McAfee but it finds nothing. Can you please advise me if this is some sort of malware? If so, how can I go about removing it? Thank you for your help. Hi -- Welcome to SevenForums. According to your specs, you only have 2 GB of RAM installed. Having 1.18 usable would be about right. Some of it is used on your Video Card and a few other things. Since you have a 64-bit system, you can install more RAM and increase the speed of your PC quite a bit. You should have at least 4 GB installed. If you do get more, it needs to match what you have. Don't just buy 2 GB more and stick it in because that would cause more problems. Since RAM is fairly cheap these days, it might be good to buy all new RAM. == Have you tried putting in your old video card and seeing how your PC operates? That will give you somethin... Read more

Hello,
I have Windows 7 Starter, SP1.
No matter which method is used for commencing System Restore
(direct from Windows System; from Advanced Boot Options, or from a System Repair Disc)
upon completing restoring to a restore point, System Restore reports an "unspecified error" stating that no changes have been made, yet the restore DOES seem to have been successful.
Is there a solution to correct this strange issue, since although the restore usually turns out to have been successful, it does mean that I must make careful checks to see if the Restore really did happen.
Example 1:
I needed to remove some Windows Updates that had been just installed
I first disabled "Avast Antivirus" using its option: "Disable Permanently".
I used System Restore to restore to a restore point created prior to the installation of the Windows Updates.
Upon reaching the Desktop, System Restore reported an unspecified error and stated that NO changes were made, but when I examined Windows Update > Installed Updates, the Updates in question were not listed.

Therefore I assumed the restore HAD in fact been successful.

Example 2:
In this example System Restore gave two different and contradictory messages:
I first disabled "Avast Antivirus" using its option: "Disable Permanently".
I then used "System Restore" from:
"Advanced Boot Options > Repair Your Computer >
System Recovery Options > ... Read more

I had the "system fix" virus. Bleeping computer and malware thru much work finally killed it. Malware now sweeps are clean. Norton 360 sweeps are clean, but there are still some problems.
Windows Vista 64
I tried to run system restore and it tries but half way thru running it kicks out and says system can not restore. I have tried a few different restore dates all with the same result. I have now tried sfc/scannow and the response is :Windows Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. And the details are in the cbs.log
I looked at the log but i don't know what it said.
Other wierd things are going on like when you left click the start button no programs show up, but you can search for them and find them.
Other things like no word, excel icons or programs... but when you click on documents it opens and runs just fine..

Thanks for any help..
signed totally lost.
I hate that Bleeping virus..

Answer:system restore fail

I know you don't want to hear this, but it's my feeling that sometimes the best option after your system has been badly infected is a fresh start (format and clean install). It's not something I suggest lightly or often, but if I were in your situation it's what I'd do.

Also, instead of relying on system restore, you might want to consider using disc imaging software on a regular basis. Aside from anything else, when used properly and regularly it will give you a safe haven - even from nasty malware.

Question: System BOOT Fail

While running Vista (64 bit) I was restarting my computer due to yet another freeze up I noticed something weird. Once I booted up the screen was completely black and slowly turned white from top to bottom and slowly faded to reveal the display logo for my motherboard. After about 10 minutes it would finally show me a different screen saying

Keyboard error or no keyboard present
***** Warning: System BOOT Fail *****
Your system last boot fail or POST interrupted.
Please enter setup to load default and reboot again

Press F1 to continue. Press DEL to enter setup.

I have not changed any files or added anything and because it will not recognize my G15 keyboard I am stuck with a useless $3000 computer.
Can anyone offer any ideas on how to fix this?

I am in the process of adding a second 2TB Drive to my Dell XPS 8700, Win 7 PRO 64bit,
My goal is to have the second drive take over if the first drive (C:\) fails. The second drive should boot with the OS and my programs. My data files are being backed up to an external NAS set up as Raid 1.
I was going to set up Raid1 on my Dell but after reading some posts on the forum and others I'm not sure that is what I should do. I'm a newby in this area and do not understand all the issues in this area,

How can I (and what are the steps) to accomplish what I want to do. I prefer not to have to re-install everything that is currently on my boot drive.

Thanks,

Hi guys, recently I installed a new graphics card, Sapphire Radeon 5700 series, while I was running windows XP. When I went to turn the computer back on an install drivers I was given an error which said something about the cmos and gave me the option to hit F1 and continue with boot or hit delete and load default settings to reboot. I continued and the computer ran perfectly fine. After installing the graphics driver I rebooted to complete the process and had a new issue; the computer took twice the time to begin the boot process and gave me the error:
*****Warning: System BOOT Fail****
Your system last boot fail or Post Interupted.
Please set default and reboot.

So naturally I decided to try what the computer told me to do, I loaded default settings and rebooted, and nothing changed. I looked at a couple similar issues on forums that said to try running a disc check on the drive, this did not work. I have confirmed that it is a motherboard related issue and not software because when I booted with a new hard drive I recieved the same error message. However, the computer is running just fine aside from the slow boot now. I'm not sure what to do, any ideas? Also I am now running windows 7.

Answer:System BOOT Fail. Help please!

Can you load into Safemode without the error?

Cmos can be reset. Cmos battery looks like a large watch battery. If you take that battery out for a few minutes it resets. (not sure if that's necessary just yet)

What card did you have before this new Sapphire Radeon 5700?

Question: System Boot Fail

Hi, Whenever i boot my computer, a screen will come up saying " Warning system boot fail!" and will list my 2 entries "primary master ide : None" and "master slave ide : None". Under this it lists my 3 devices in sata 1st being my primary hdd, 2nd being my cd rom and 3rd being my secondary hd.

Now all this has started since i installed a new graphics card onto my system, since then i have done a clean install of windows, updated graphics drivers and rummaged around bios to no avail. Please can someone help me.

Forgot to mention it gives the option to press F1 to go on regardless, but pc doesn't seem as stable as usual.

Answer:System Boot Fail

If you've done a clean install, then most of the options I would suggest here don't apply as that would have resolved most issues including most boot issues. Normally I would suggest a Startup Repair and then bootrec.exe to reset the boot configuration - back to the original if necessary - but both of those are essentially covered with a clean boot.

I suggest you check for updates to your BIOS (from your computer manufacturer) and install them. In fact, do so even if they are the same version as there may be some corruption or some other problem and a fresh copy may solve the problem. Then triple-check the settings to make sure that everything is configured properly because this sounds very much like a BIOS problem of some sort (even though you say it started with the new graphics card). Be sure to check any graphics-related BIOS settings (if any) as the new card may possibly require some changes.

If that doesn't work, do you still have the old graphics card and does it work (or a card from another computer you can borrow for testing)? Try replacing the current graphics card with the original or other (and change the drivers of course) and see if the problem goes away. If so, you may want to confirm that the new graphics card is compatible with your system (the version of Vista you are using, the motherboard into which it is inserted, any BIOS graphics settings, and everything else) and that it is not defective (though I don't understand how even then it would cause ... Hello. Yesterday, I tried performing a System Recovery on my computer by pressing f11. I've done this more than once so I'm quite familiar. However, during the process, my computer shut off completely. I turned my computer back on and it went back to the System Recovery screen but a message appeared saying something like "An unexpected shut down of your computer. Windows is unable to install. Press OK to restart and install the Windows software" or something along those lines. So I kept pressing OK and my computer kept restarting but nothing happened. The same message kept appearing.

So on my other laptop, I created a USB that would install Windows Vista Home Premium. That worked and I was able to access Windows. However, when I boot up my computer, a screen appears that says "Choose an Operating System" and it has "Windows Vista" listed twice. Also, all the f keys work when I boot up the computer however, the f11 key does not work at all. I can't access the System Recovery. I try to press f11 and it says "System Recovery....." but then it loads to the "Choose an Operating System" screen.

My question is, is there any other way to access System Recovery other than pressing f11?? Maybe typing something in the Command Prompt?

Also, can someone maybe provide me with the HP System Recovery Manager disk download?? I don't want to order one. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

Question: System Boot Fail??

Hi Im running Vista 64bit on my computer and all of a sudden it wont boot up properly.

My machine is (sorry if bit vague not 100% without looking on comp):

Asus Crosshair Motherboard
AMD Athlon FX Dual Core 64bit
2 Gb of DDR2 RAM
Gefore 8600GT
SATA 250GB HD
Firstly it will play up by powering up then cutting out, but then I figured out sometimes if i keep pressing the reset button it will power up long enough to display something up on screen then comes up with this message:

System boot fail
Your system last boot fail or POST interrupted
Please enter setup to load default and reboot again
So I have done this and it either just crashes or starts to show the Vista loading bar but just stays like that for hours. Also the screen every now and again will be all glitchy (eg text is not readable and random marks across the screen.

I have tried putting the Vista disc in and it just says windows is loading files the bar gets to 100% and nothing...it just hangs again.
It did this once a week ago and I managed to try all of the above, then unplug it all come back to it about 4 hours later and seemed to boot...but not this time

Now I am very worried as my other machine has started doing something similar:

It says

Hardware Initiate Failure Please check device
The bios does not be installed press (g) to continue!

Dont ask me how I have this working at the mo I unplugged everything, had the windows disc in reset bios to defaults etc a mixture of that somehow has this machine ... Read more

I've been tinkering with Ubuntu Linux on my P40 Yoga for a few months now. While I prefer Linux overall, the compatibility with the nvidia graphics chipset just isn't up to snuff yet, and the graphics capability was the driving force behind my purchase of this laptop in the first place. I ordered the system restore USB stick from Lenovo, and tried to do a complete restore job.  The process hangs around the 60% overall progress point.  After 15 minutes of no progress, I get a "Recovery Failed" message. Any ideas?  I've seen a couple of posts here mentioning a DVD rather than USB recovery media.

I am in the process of trying to reinstall windows on my laptop. I managed to kill the hdd which was holding the 'recovery partition.' I swapped out the drive but have not ha any luck getting windows on it. I tried a couple of .iso files and a disk from a different computer but have gotten nowhere. If anyone can help me get this computer running again it would be greatly appreciated. The specs are as follows:

HP dv6830us (dv6700 series) laptop
Intel T5550 Core2Duo Processor
4Gb DDR2 @ 667 MHz (upgraded from 3Gig)
500Gb WD Scorpio Blue HDD (upgraded from WD 250Gb)
Vista Home Premium

I went ahead and replaced the system but would like to get it running with Vista back on it. I have the code for Vista on the bottom of the laptop but no Vista :/

Answer:System recovery fail

You will have to order recovery disks from HP. Or, if you know someone who has a Vista Home Premium Disk, you could use that and the code you have. You might have to install additional drivers though and you would not get any of the HP stuff either.

Hello, I have an urgent request... (as probably most do in here, lol)

The thing is I have a friend in sweden with an almost new laptop,
he went to visit a friend with it, played some online games together,
came back and now its "broken". The only thing that was installed during that time
was steam.

The toshiba laptop had windows 7 preinstalled in swedish which is why I cant
help much there and he and his family are fire & water when it comes to them & any kind of technical stuff.

So we tried to fix it as much as possible but here is what happens...

He turns the laptop on, "Windows is reading files" then turns into the "Self-Repair" mode and after a few seconds it says "can not self-repair, if you added some devices since the last good loading point please remove those and start again" u can then either choose "restart" or "cancel". There are however 2 more options in that screen, 1 is to show a logfile of why its not working, which didnt show anything suspicious and 2 is to go into advanced options, if he clicks the advanced option it says "to perform this action u need to be logged in" which is kinda where we are stuck, since there is no way to log in.

We then tried the F2 + restart to see if something in the BIOs is screwd up
but everything was fine, just to be sure we returned it to default (which didnt change anything anyway).

Then we tried the F8 + restart and tried almost ever... Read more

I have an old XP PC that my wife uses for email and web use. Due to a problem with not working wirelessly I needed to use system restore to try and fix the problem.
System restore worked, but failed to fix the problem so I tried to use an earlier restore point in July 2011 which I know was a time that the system was OK. The system restore process has not completed after 14 hours. The screen shows the message "System Restore - Restoring Settings" and the progress bar is about 85% complete, but no more apparent activity.
Given all the warnings about not switching off the PC before successful completion of Sytem Restore what should I do?

Answer:System Restore Fail - XP

It would appear that Restore has hung for some reason but I don't know of a definitive safe way to stop the process. You could try using Task Manager to stop it, but you may well damage the Registry and need to do a Repair unless you have a backup you can overwrite the Windows files with.
If you use ATI (or perhaps similar) and have a backup you can use the Acronis CD to boot the PC and the backup to only overwrite the Windows file.

I took the harddrive from my dad's computer and put it into my old box. My old system is a Intel P4 on an Intel board. It has 1 gig of ram and a new power supply. In the bios, the board sees the harddrive and everything else.
However, windows Xp will not load in any mode. A window comes up says that a hardware change is resposible.
Without reformatting, how do I bring Windows XP back online?
Thank you for any help.

I have a Asus system with Windows 7. (Not sure how much background one needs). I recently did a shutdown and then cannot get Windows to boot up. I have done a few steps from what I have located in the forums. I keep getting a failure for system restore. I attached a few screen shorts of the responses I am getting. Any suggestions based on this info? What else would be needed? My main concern is to recover some of the data that had not been backed up yet. Thanks for any suggestions......

Answer:System restore fail. Recoverable?

Have you attempted to boot into Safe Mode?

You could use a Linux Live CD to recover your data - https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorial...linux-live-cds

I am trying to create a system image of my C Drive (Currently a Samsung 840 EVO SSD) to an external HDD. When I try to do this I get the following error:

"The backup failed.
There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.
Additional Information:
The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request."

Can anyone help me with this problem? I am currently using windows 8.1 using an Inspiron 7720, Intel Core i7-3630QM CPU, 8gb ram,

I haven't created a system image in awhile and figured my SSD may be going because when playing games recently I have been getting a stutter every couple of minutes and figured the drive is failing. Or is this caused by something else?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

About two weeks ago I downloaded a movie poster from a site and McAfee went nuts catching one trojan after another. Everything has been cleaned off using Ad-Aware, MS AntiSpyware Beta, PandaSoft, XOFTSpy, Registry Mechanic and Trend Micro to remove the stuff... nearly 20 of the things. It worked fine and I am sort of back in business with my XP Pro.

However, I can no longer acquire XP updates. The MS Windows update site downloads the file and then tells me it failed during installation without any reason given. I have reloaded XP (original disk using sfc /scannow) and then reloaded SP2 from a Microsoft CD that I have. Nothing is able to be downloaded from this update location. I can find files elsewhere on the Microsoft site and they download and install (like WINPLAYER 10).

I posted also at the Security Hijack forum. I received info about doing scans, WINSOCK repairs, and HijackThis logs which have now been blessed as being clean. The updates are still not working from Microsoft and no error message is given other than downloads have been unsuccessful ....failed. The security forum suggested I return to the XP forum to see if anyone can help me with this problem.

My Windows installer is 3.1 v2 and I have Microsoft.NET Framework version 1.1 (not SP1) installed. I have turned off the AdWatch plug in from Lavasoft AdAware, accepted Active X, and even shut down the Windows firewall temporarily but this does not fix the problem. HiFor starters which OS are you using? If it is Windows 7 you can make a system repair disk(you can make one if you have access to another computer) http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1114725.htmBoot from the disk and let windows automatically repair if it finds any errors.Let me know if this helps.

I'm trying to solve this problem for a customer's computer, and it's got me stumped. When the computer first boots up, IE won't display any web pages and OE won't connect to the mail server for about 15 minutes. After that time, they both work fine. Firefox is working fine, but the customer doesn't want to use Mozilla permanently. She won't let me put Thunderbird on, and only uses Firefox if she needs to get a webpage up before IE is ready.
She runs XP Home, SP2. The problem started after she installed SP3, but removing SP3 had no effect. I've tried reinstalling IE, even dropped back to IE6, with no change. The only thing I've found that seems to improve it is starting in Safe Mode (with networking, of course). IE and OE respond right away in Safe Mode. My theory is that some service that IE and OE depend on is having trouble starting, but I can't figure out what.
Any thoughts?

I try to use system restore, select a restore point and it runs the process un until re-boot. Following re-boot, I get the message that the restore was unsuccessful and no changes have been made.Running Win XP Proany idea why this is?

Answer:System Restore Points Fail

The most likely reason is that the restore points are corrupt. Open System Restore/Settings/ tick the box to turn System restore off and reboot. then turn system restore back on. (You will lose all prevoius restore points, but it should make a new one when you turn it on again.

I have been running my setup for couple of years and i have never had a problem with it until recently when one day i was doing multiple tasks on the PC, and then it crashed with a blue screen and gave out a error... i closed the system down and after a couple of hours later the computer will not boot properly, basically it DOES NOT display anything, hangs on boot, the lights come, fans spinning... it gives out the message after a little wait of "system fail, cpu test", so i did some google search and came out with 1000's of results.... so after reading some articles, i disconnected everything and tried to boot, same thing, so then i just had cpu, heatsink, same thing... so i was thinkin it must be cpu, but i been reading other articles which say its a common problem on a ASUS P4P800 motherboards... anyone?...

P4 2.5ghz
4x256mb ram
1x500gb sata
1x120gb sata
ASUS p4p800
ATI 9600 AGPx8
could it be the motherboard or cpu, any other way to test and find out where the problem is occurring from... thanks in advance ...

i believe that someone posted here recently (a few days back) about the same motherboard and a very similar problem. we never ended up solving the problem as i recall but i think hos problem was out of the blue the computer wouldnt post anymore. but all of your symptoms sound like a cpu error, for whatever reason it isnt working, it is not the mobo if you have bios and you are getting that error message. it also indicates the ram, psu and bios are working.

Hi , i create a system image for my windows 7 from the control panel and save it on the d partition, but when try to recover system image it takes too long ' about 13 hour , so i cancel the recovery , and when i restart the computer there is black screen and message "no operating system" what can i do please help...!

My files and the system image folder (160GB) still in the d , but the c is down.

Answer:Fail to recover from system image .

Do you have a place other than the laptop where you can temporarily store your data that is now on D?

If you do, you may be able to use a built-in recovery partition on the Asus laptop to restore you to "out of the box" condition.

I'm not positive Asus laptops have a recovery partition, but I would guess that they do.

Or, if you have a valid Certificate Of Authenticity sticker on the laptop that contains a 25 character Product Key, you could download a legal Windows ISO file, burn it to a disc, and do a clean install of Windows using the burned disc. You would activate it with the Product Key on your laptop---if you have one.

I have just finished building a new PC, and installed windows (xp home OEM)on it. After the installation, it wanted to restart the computer before finishing the rest of the process (registration, etc). So i let it, but the comp won't boot from the harddrive. It is a SATA drive. I have checked the boot order in the BIOS, and it is floppy, harddrive, CD drive. I can hear it check the floppy drive, and then it says it is checking the CD drive and that's where it stops. It doesn't even seem to be trying to boot from the harddrive at all.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda. The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 nForce 4.

One thing i should note, is that further up on the screen where it tries to boot, it says 'checking for master harddrive SMART capability.....None'.

Anyway, i'm at a loss. As far as i know the drive is connected right, and it must be working OK to a certain extent, as the windows install CD can see it, can see the partition it made on it, and can see that it has installed windows on it. So the drive itself or cable i don't think can be at fault.

It therefore seems to me that whatever part of the computer it is that generates those first few white text-on black backround screens, prior to booting windows (i'm a newbie to this, you can tell) can't find or won;t use the harddrive.

So, does anyone have any ideas of suggestions, please?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Answer:System won't boot from harddrive

Do you have the drivers for your SATA controller, they should have come with the motherboard on a floppy. While installing XP, the installation should pause and ask you for RAID or SATA drivers, at which point you would insert the floppy disk.

I have a business laptop with safeboot encryption meaning I have to enter a username/password before the OS can boot. This would also mean that I can't boot to a windows recovery disk to tell windows to recover to a System Image if I'm not mistaken. If this is true then the rest of my question will be somewhat void unless I can convince the folks to unencrypt my drive for a day while I build my image and recreate on the new drive. What I am trying to figure out if a System Image will allow me to backup my current setup on a 80 GB HD to a 250 GB HD. Trying to make restoring my OS as painless as possible as I've honestly gotten everything the way I want it. I do see this http://www.clonezilla.org/ which to be honest I've never used before. I've used Ghost and could go that route but this would still require I believe booting to a CD which with the environment/encryption I can't do currently. Let me know your thoughts please.

Answer:Win 7: System Image : New Harddrive

You can store a disc image on any medium (cd, dvd, hd, removable hd) and restore from that medium. I've never used Clonezilla but I've been using Acronis True Image for a long time.

I have just started to use a new machine I put together and I'm trying to take my old hard drive (a Maxtor Fireball 3 30 GB) and connect it to the new machine as a slave drive. The master hard drive in the new machine is a Western Digital WDC WD800BB. Now I know the IDE 2 slot on the motherboard is working because the system recognizes the CD-ROM drive. I have tried every jumper setting possible. I follow the WDC setting. The Maxtor is a 9 pin drive, so the WDC said to put two jumpers when running a dual set up. This did not work. I tried to set it how Maxtor wants it where if it's going to be a slave drive then there shouldn't be a jumper at all. I thought that it might be a system level issue , but I've tried every combination in the drive sequence to make it work and it just won't. Every time it says that the drive is not found. I know the drive works fine because I can put it back in the old machine and it boots right up. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've even set each drive to the manufacturers specifications and it still doesn't work. What's also strange is that the WDC has to be set on cable select to work even with out a cable select cable connected. This is all happening before the OS ever boots up. Any suggestions?

Answer:System won't accept harddrive

If this is a new machine, why use such outdated [and slow] drives? Even the WD is only a 2meg cache drive. Modern mb are really designed to use sata drives.

Next if you really really must use these drives, post your exact system specs AND how you have them connected; ie Asus xxx123 motherboard with drives connected to ide1, ide2, etc.

Help needed:

I have a 120g harddrive that is partitioned. One partition is my C-drive with Windows XP installed on it. The second partition on the harddrive is misc files, which I have moved to another harddrive.

I also have a 2nd 160g harddrive, D-drive, that has nothing on it at the moment.

I would like to have as precise as possible, step by step instructions on how to un-partition the C-drive and put Windows XP back on it, without reinstalling Windows XP, if possible.

I kind of have an idea on how to do it, just not sure of how to do it, if you know what I mean.

I know I have to backup the Windows XP system from the C-drive. What is a good easy to use product for the backup and where to go from there, i am not sure of.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
RwsRichard

Answer:Unpartition System harddrive help

You can use the HDD manufactures free utility to copy/transfer a bootable image (your OS) from one HDD to another, then format/partition then use the utility to copy your OS back to the drive.

Other software that can resize your HDD is Partition magic, not free though

This might work, it's free http://majorgeeks.com/Partition_Resizer_d4701.html

Ok.. about 2 weeks ago i did a system restore it worked great. I downloaded a P2P program to get a couple songs deleted P2P program. There was one file that said it couldn't download because it was corrupt. Im using a wireless internet usb adapter, it randomly disconnects itself for about 5 seconds but its annoying when im playing a game. I thought maybe it was getting hot so i put it in front of a fan and it still did it. This problem only started happening after i downloaded the P2P program. I went to system restore to restore it to before i got the P2P program and it came back and said it was unable to do a system restore for any date i tried a bunch of them. Then i ran a bunch of scans, Microsoft security suit, SuperAntiSpyware Free edition, Malwarebytes Anti Malware free edition... The only thing that was found was a few tracking cookies. I am using Zone Alarm free edition. I looked to see if any programs were installed and no none, i got to tast manager and there are no weird applications running. Then i turned off System restore restarted my computer turned it back on about 20 minutes later tried a system restore it worked. The next day doesnt work again. Are my 2 problems even related? What do i do?

My brothers laptop was clicking on startup, and 2 out of 3 times showing the 'Insert boot media' screen. I presumed that it was a problem with the hdd as most clicking problems are either the hdd or fan, and since windows was not starting either, that was my guess. Anyway, I decided to try a system restore, and it worked! The laptop started every time with no click... But now no programs are opening. Windows applications like task manager are working but no other programs eg. Chrome. When opened, it appears to run in Task M for a few seconds and then exits. In the process of undoing the restore now. Any help???

I am running a Windows XP OS and am having major problems with it. It first started about two weeks ago, whenever I would start my computer in Normal Mode, non of the original start up programs loaded at the beginning. The only devices that would load (the icons in the lower left hand corner, by the clock) were the volume controls, the battery power, as well as the connections icon. All other programs would not load. Now at that point in time, I was not able to open any programs such as Chrome, IE, Norton, or any other program. I WAS able to open files saved on the desktop such as Word files and even saved Internet Pages.-I tried to fix the problem by booting XP in safe mode which works. I then ran a few Anti Spyware and Malware programs to see if I had any infected files. I did, so i quarantined them. Ever since I did that, when I now try to restart my computer in Normal Mode, it shows the Welcome Screen however once that has passed, the only thing that displays or loads is the desktop background. (I also tried to do a system restore, however when it would reboot, it first displayed that it could not locate the RSTRUI.EXE file and asked which program I would like to open it up with, now if I try to do it, it wont even display that, it will just reboot and the only thing that loads is the desktop backround with the cursor) So the only thing I am able to do is run it in Safe Mode....I am not computer literate whatsoever. Any help at all would be great.

Answer:Can't boot in Normal Mode/System Res Fail

The worst part about virus removal is that removing the virus often only removes the root of the issue, leaving a mess to clean up afterwards. Generally, large holes in windows or the registry. You can try repairing your version of windows with the i386 folder. To do this go to Start -> run -> type "sfc /scannow" (without the " ") If it requires a system disk, then you'll need one to finish the repair, sometimes it doesn't though. This can take a while but it will repair your windows for the most part. It does a fairly decent job of it, but if worst comes to worst you may need to find a system disk to redo your system. Or you can make your own bootable disk using BartPE (just google it, and you can download it. You'll need a CD to do it though). BartPE also uses the i386 folder, but as previously stated it creates a bootable image on CD for you. So, it's like starting from scratch.Best of luck!

The above notebook seems to have a corrupt BIOS as I get "The system BIOS is recovering from error on start BIOS recovery 500".   It loops constantly to this error. I have followed this article http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443505 with no success. I have downloaded the updated BIOS file and followed the process in the above article to create a BIOS recovery drive, however I am not seeing the option to create the USB drive, which seems to be because HPQRUN.exe is failing ot run. I am getting a text file created that says the following:"2017/01/23 09:50:20.524|00001F4C|Information|WinMain|Command Line:"F:\hpqRun.exe"2017/01/23 09:50:20.544|00001F4C|Information|FindMappingFile|Found F:\\MAP.INI file2017/01/23 09:50:20.564|00001F4C|Information|FindSectionName|Found [SYSTEM_ID] section in INI file2017/01/23 09:50:20.575|00001F4C|Information|FindKeyID|Found SECTION: [SYSTEM_ID]2017/01/23 09:50:20.616|00001F4C|Information|GetSystemID|System ID: 339A2017/01/23 09:50:20.636|00001F4C|Information|FindSectionAndKeyStrings|INI section name to read:  SYSTEM_ID2017/01/23 09:50:20.646|00001F4C|Information|FindSectionAndKeyStrings|INI key name to read:  339A2017/01/23 09:50:20.647|00001F4C|Information|GetTargetExecutable|Cannot find this ID [339A] in MAP.INI file2017/01/23 09:50:20.660|00001F4C|Information|GetTargetExecutable|Cannot find this ID [339A] in MAP.INI file2017/01/23 09:50:20.673|00001F4C|Information|WinMain|Completed, Return Code: 1001"If i look in th... Is there any reason system restore on Windows 7 is not successful?

It has happened several times before and I searched the registry to remove traces of the program I wanted to be rid of (not suspicious, just not useful)

This time I downloaded a "Giveaway of the Day" and checked what users had to say on download.com (after installing unfortunately). A fair number of users warned that it carried spyware and even worse. For what it's worth I never opened the program. I uninstalled using Revo uninstaller and manually deleted two more items found in a reg edit search. Still nervous, I tried to do a system restore that didn't succeed. I went back a couple of weeks and tried another that didn't work. In the past several months I tried a couple of time and it didn't work. Actually it has never worked.

I run firefox in sandboxie and have Avast security suite. After recovery, before installing, I scanned the downloaded file with Avast and Malabytes and it passed.

Just now I scanned my computer with malabytes which found no problem.

Does anyone have any idea why system restore won't restore? I have several system backups, none very recent. Not sure when I first tried to restore, likely several months after getting the PC.

I use CCleaner often, but doubt that would erase anything that would stop system restore. How concerned should I be about this? And can anyone suggest how to restore the system restore function. While I wait I'll try find that problem on ... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] System Restore points fail

1. Is System Restore disabled?
2. Ccleaner can be set to remove restore points. Check it.
Assuming neither of the above, create a restore point, Now immediately see if it works. If so you need to give SR more space. In no restore, see if the one you created works in Safe Mode.

Running Vista OS. 'System Restore' and 'Backup' repeatedly fail.
Normal access route used, I have also used the 'safe mode' route, and even tried through 'task scheduler' guided by a site through 'Microsoft Answers'.
All produce the same result that file (0x80070002) cannot be found. (see attachment)

Awhile back I had a power failure due to a storm. When I rebooted, I got the message System is running in fail-safe state. Please recheck bios cmos setup. I did go into setup due to something I read on here and tried choosing the optimum settings. I was able to go into windows, but I keep getting the error message. Every time I reboot I have to hit F1 and it gets annoying. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this?

This is a sporadic problem, and only happens to probably 1 in 10 machines, but it happens nontheless. I've been imaging a sizable amout on T61's, and part of the cleanup is to run the Thinkvantage System Update utility. The only updates I install are the XP updates, ann LAN/WAN updates, and the BIOS update. The last time I ran the updates on a machine, these are the ones I installed: - Help Center update- XP Q934205- XP Q910728- XP Q917332- XP Q941880- XP Q918837- XP Q889816- XP Q923293- Intel LAN 11abgn, abg, bg, for Windows 2000/XP- Intel Pro/1000 Lan- Presentation Director update- Thinkpad video features- BIOS Update- Adobe Flash Update On some machines, when I run the updates and restart, the video fails and I have to enter safe mode, roll back the video driver, then go out to the Lenovo downloads and download the latest video and it works. Strange, huh? I dont always install the Thinkpad Video Features, I just did on the last machine I updated in order to try and recreate the issue, but havent been successful yet. I'm going to try the MS KB but figured I'd try to post here first and see if anyone else is having/had this issue.  Let me know if you need more informationThanks-Tyler

Answer:Thinkvantage System Updates cause video to fail to new T61

Fixed the issue. I dont know how many people this would apply to. I was configuring another machine when the issue happened, but I wrote down the updates before I installed them. I installed 3 (Q923293, Q934205, and Q941880) and, upon restart, the video failed. I looked up the updates, and Q941880 was the only one that had to do with video. I rolled back to the update installed prior to that (Q934205, I believe) and viola! It worked. So, if anyone has this issue, it might have to do with update XP-Q941880, so either roll back to before you installed that, or roll back your video driver and install the latest one directly from Lenovo.com. Cheers-Tyler

Hi: I had a hard disk failure on my T42.  I bought a new Western Digital 120GB Scorpio hard disk (WD1200BEVE) and bought the Lenovo Recovery and Restore set of CDs. When I start the process to restore the system to its original factory settings, it starts copying files to the new hard disk and suddenly it stops and gives the "delayed write fail" error.  I get the error before I can even use the other recovery CDs, so the only CD that I have used is the startup disks. Could anyone help me try to sort this out? What things should I check/modify?Thank you

Answer:T42 system restore delayed write fail

Did you go into the BIOS and change the boot order to the dvd\combo drive?
