Can't find hardware - hard drive

Question: Can't find hardware - hard drive

Hey there,

I use Norton Ghost to back up the contents of my master hard drive. The secondary hard drive(the one I back up my files to) I place in a Mobile Rack which I slide into my computer before I back up and slide out and put away when not backing up.

All this worked fine for MONTHS. I was able to back up my master hard drive to my secondary hard drive... But all of a sudden I'm having problems...

Last week I opened norton ghost but it said that it could only detect my master hard drive, not my secondary hard drive... So I logged onto windows xp and went into the Add Hardware section to see if I could detect the secondary hard drive. It found it fine and I was able to back up my master hard drive to the secondary hard drive...

This week the same thing happened however when I went into Add hardware, it won't pick up the secondary hard drive... I've also tried uninstalling the Secondary IDE Channel and SIS PCI IDE Controller but it didn't end up picking the secondary hard drive up... I've tried this and restarted my computer seceral times...

Sometimes the yellow light (the light that fashes when the hard drive is loading/thinking) appears on the secondary hard drive so I guess it is getting power to it.

Any ideas why it is not finding the secondary hard drive?
Is the secondary hard drive faulty? It's fairly new (6 months).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a customer's Satellite L305D S5895 laptop. This was shipped to me by the customer who tried to install Windows XP Pro, Vista and none would install. He said he tried all installation CDs he had and finally gave up on it and shipped it to me.

When I got it the partition were deleted so I tried to install Win 7 and when I do doing a custom install I get an error saying the hard drive can't be formatted on disk 0 or it will give an error that no hard drives were found.

I reset the bios to default and no matter what I do it won't format or find the harddrive. I was going to upgrade the bios but the only way I found to upgrade the bios is after windows is installed. There is no way to make changes to the bios for settings that would have to do with the hard drive. This has a Toshiba MK2546GSX (S1) hard drive.

When installing Win 7 I get the normal windows, "windows is starting", "Select Language", "Select System", "Type of install", "Custom Install", "Delete partitions", "New Partitions", "Format", then the error message "Windows cannot format a partition on disk 0. Error: 0x80070057"

This happens regardless what system I try to install. I've tried two different versions of XP, one of Vista and 3 Win 7 and each time a different install CD.

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

Hi guys. I've been trying to diagnose several problems over the past few months with my 6 month old PC that I built in January. My latest thread on this besides this one is here.

While trying to troubleshoot all these problems, someone said to check power. So I downloaded SpeedFan, and sure enough the +5v was reading around 2-3v, and rarely making it in to the 4's. I know bad power can screw things up, so I replaced the Antec power supply with a PC Power & Cooling yesterday. To my dismay, the problem of things freezing every few seconds in WinXP was still there.

Also something that remained after the PSU upgrade was a kind of clicking and high pitch whine noise every few seconds. I thought it sounded like the motherboard, but I have evidence otherwise now.

I was running a PC Pitstop test on the machine last night after the PSU upgrade, and it seemed to check out OK, except on the disks. The disks portion showed a red flag, and here are some of the items it said:

- Clean up disk space (Drive D, E)
- Upgrade disk space (Drive D, E)
- Unusually low performance (Drive D)

So I click on "Unusually low performance"

Drive D has an uncached speed of 20 megabytes per second.

Drive E has an uncached speed of -3 megabytes per second.

For comparison, systems with the same CPU and clock speed as this one have a speed of 42.55 MB/s. Click to expand...

During the tests on the screen, when it said scanning drive E, I heard those clicking and high pitched... Read more

Answer:Connecting my hardware encrypted hard drive to my PS3

The only way to do it is to turn off the encryption on the Buffalo. The BIOS of the PS3 isn't set up for decryption.

Hey, I've purchased a T430S with a primary 128GB SSD and secondary 1TB HDD installed with the bay adapter. The laptop came with Win7 Pro so I wiped the SSD and installed Win 7 Ultimate. Ever since I've re-installed Windows the laptop is showing the Safetly Remove Hardware icon, with the 1TB HDD listed. Everything is working fine but this drive should be picked up as an Internal drive and not be removable. Obviusly if I try to remove it, it says the drive is in use. I've tried the following but nothing worked:1. Registry Edit: http://www.overclock.net/t/974023/fix-ahci-sata-drives-showing-in-safely-remove-hardware2. HDD Policies (optimize for quick removal: http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/62d1197881467-hard-drive-speed-boosts-policies.jpg3. I've looked in the BIOS but there is no setting to disable hot swapping.4. Updated all the drivers using Lenovo's Update Utility From what I can see both drives are on the same controller but one shows up as a removable SCSI device. Any help appericated.   Gregor

Answer:Safely Remove Hardware for Second Hard Drive

>> 1. Registry Edit: http://www.overclock.net/t/974023/fix-ahci-sata-drives-showing-in-safely-remove-hardware This is the fix that I always use together with my UltraBay HDD. However, it only works with the default Microsoft driver for the ATA controller, and not with the Lenovo-supplied Intel driver. Uninstall the Intel driver (in Device Manager) and reboot. Windows 7 will install its own driver automatically. Then, those new Registry keys and values will be used appropriately.

I am ordering a Dual Monitor new PC.

My kids want to watch & Record TV on one screen and I would like to work with my PC using the second screen.

Can somebody please explain what extra hardware & software do I need to order in new PC ?

Also I have a choice of two video cards namely :

128MB PCIe(TM)x16 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 8300GS w/TV-Out, VGA & DVI
256MB PCIe(TM)x16 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 8600GT w/TV-Out & Dual DVI

The 256 MB is more than twice in price.

I am not a gamer but I do analyze stocks charts with live streaming data with graphic software.

So do I need 256 MB or 128 MB would do ?

Thank You.

I just noticed this at newegg today.

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/BlackArmor/

Basically is there any difference between hardware vs software hard drive encryption. The drive seems painfully slow, but at the same time I hear that hardware has the benefit because the pass key is not stored in memory.

Just getting some inputs. Might save up to buy one of these. I am using TrueCrypt on a flash drive now.

Answer:Software vs Hardware hard drive encryption

Looks interesting; though I'll wait for security experts to tear it apart before I buy one. Even then, software solutions like TrueCrypt are pretty flexible since you can use it for just about any device. I'd also consider software solutions plenty secure for most users provided they're aware of potential security issues (like the recently documented cold boot attack).

A new T440 will not recognize a brand new, never used Samsung SATAIII (or SataII) SSD. After restoring the factory HDD, the system will not recognize that, either. By "not recognize" i mean the hardware will not recognize the drive in that situation. Booting and pressing F12 shows nothing except the network boot possibility or the optical drive. Booting to recovery media shows no hard drive to recover to. Booting to the recovery flash drive, going to command prompt, and running diskpart>list disk shows no hard drive - for either the brand new drive or original one. I could understand that drives might be whitelisted (although it would be difficult to forgive Lenovo for not giving some public notice somewhere), but why would there be no error code (as there was on T42/43 units)? And why would the unit not recognize the original drive that Lenovo shipped with the unit when that HDD was returned to the unit?

Answer:T440 hardware won't recognize hard drive

Have you pulled the drive again and carefully inspected the HDD connector on the motherboard?  I'd be concerned about connector damage since the original HDD isn't recognzed.

If it is not causing a problem, leave it alone.Lots of problems can be caused by making "adjustments" to computers that don't really need doing - as you have hinted already.

Hi:

There in lies the problem. Can you guys tell me what is the most up-to-date DVD+-R(RW) with CD-R(RW). I have no idea what the + and the - mean. Would this drive on egghead be a good choice, or is there something better I should consider. Cheaper is of course better:

SAMSUNG Black IDE DVD Burner Model TS-H552U/BEBN BLK - OEM

As for the hard drive I first mentioned, I want to go to a mirrored setup. I have an Asus MB with EIDE, SATA, FW and USB2.

?What is better, SATA-150 or SATA-3GB?
?7200 RPM should be fine, right?

How about this one:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

I want to edit video with Adobe Premiere, and have a 3.2 GHz P4 and 2GB PC3200.

That's fine--the - and + is a different format--some DVDs are - and some are plus--most today burn to both formats and I would get a drive that burns to both formats. You don't need a CD-RW if you have a DVD-RW. I only have one drive. You may want one for CD to CD copiesa and if you have the room.

I was given my Erazer X310 as an early christmas present last year, over the last week I have trouble where most programs stop responding and task manager shows the hard drive at 100% while the processes running are barely using 0.5mb (I usually only see it hit 100% when the processes show a total of 10+mb at least). Could someone please describe to me in detail what each of these failures means and how I might go about fixing this?I have included a screen shot in case it helps, I was unsure if some of the information should be kept hidden so I have covered it up. Hi!
We had a fight with a laptop, laptop lost - LCD needed replacement and hard drive failed.

Screen was sorted, hard drive was replaced. By specialists, not a DIY friend, money was spent.
I been told it would work perfectly, it wasn't a motherboard issue, replaced with 40 gig hard drive, blah blah blah, the only thing i wasn't told if it was a used disk or a new one, so I am having my doubts.

After installing XP (time and time again) and all the drivers it looks fine for a while. Until I get some updates and some software. I downloaded Western Digital Hard Drive Diagnostics (I have my husband's laptop to look up for stuff) and ran it before XP crashed again (duh!), it failed SMART (reallocated sector count was 117 - on a 40 gig drive), passed everything else.
When I installed Norton, it just froze... Forever! And on start up (oh, I tried!) kept giving me this message (just for a second, so the only way to read it was to take a picture):

Answer:Hard drive included in safely remove hardware.

It shows up like that, because your SATA drive supports 'hot-swapping' (or hot-plug) & is incorrectly setup that way for eSATA functionality. It will do no harm, but you can change it if desired by following the guide in this Microsoft forum thread click here. G

I have two laptops and a desktop.

Just by chance I was doing important work on old laptop B.  And, after a day's worth of work, it deiced to take a, well, longer than expected sleep.  After doing troubleshooting, such as ripping the guts out, I determined that there must
be an issue with the external power cable, since after removing and reconnecting the internal power cables and shuffling the lithium battery around did not do the trick.

New laptop is now my primary laptop and it would not be cost effective for me to buy such a dated power strip / cord / adapter for old laptop.

I removed the hard drive and I can buy a SATA to USB adapter on Amazon for about $10, not factoring shipping, which will also power the HD via SATA.

There's a problem.

I have the hard drive password protected, not software encrypted, which I was able to program via the other computer, before booting into Windows 8.1 Pro via BIOS.

I know the passwords for the HD, my master and standard, but not the manufacturer's password, but the latter does not matter anyways. My gut tells me that the PW protection is stored on the HD, but I'm not sure if it will be tied to the CMOS on
the old laptop also because of the Microsoft UEFI boot settings...

So, I want to connect this HD to my desktop to extract key data but do not know a good software package to interface with the HD that is has a primary OS installed and delete the known passwords so I can boot that in a VM on my Windows ... Read more

i realise that older pc's can't/don't accept large drives.before the drive began the formating process a system scan took place and it passed the ultra ata thingy,so the machine is good to go in that respect..i was even unsure of that at the beginning so i was relieved when it detected the ata. anyway..i hope you guys can help...the hard drive was christmas present from me to my sister.i told her not to pay someone to install it as i could do it myself, which i've done plenty of times in newer machines and never had any problems.

Answer:Solved: new hard drive,old compaq(hardware limitation)

Sounds like you probably need a BIOS update. What system is that? It has to be pretty old and probably not worth the trouble. What O/S is it? Older version of Windows didn't recognize drives over certain capacties and it was pretty small.

My (all new) setup is:

Epox 8RDA3+
Athlon XP2800
80GB WD IDE
MSI GeForce5200
Windows 98
1GB Crucial 3200 memory
Aspire SuperAlien case w/ a 500W power supply and 6 case fans

Memory and processor were correctly identified at startup. So, I assumed the mobo, processor, and RAM were good.

When I went to install the hard drive, I started having problems. At first, the BIOS wouldn't recognize it, no matter how I jumpered or cabled it. Piggy backed it onto the 40GB master in my other computer, formatted and copied it. Back in the new comp, the BIOS recognizes it, but hangs and freezes at boot.
Round 4: Put 40GB drive in new comp. BIOS insists it's a slave drive, no matter the configuration. Won't recognize 80GB drive--again. (BTW, even back in the other comp, the 40GB drive won't work unless it's set to slave, now)
Round 5: Attach 80GB IDE to Promise card, reformat and install W98.

Computer boots up now, but it takes FOREVER. On top of that, the stupid windows hardware wizard keeps adding multiple copies of hardware. i.e., device manager shows ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering in there 26 times. When I start to install the drivers from the Epox CD, (i.e., nVidia nForce2 Memory Controller) the stupid wizard pops up during the install and I have to keep hitting cancel. If I try to install them via the wizard, it says "windows was unable to find...," eventhough I've pointed it to them on the CD.

When you have a bunch of computers with the EXACT same hardware, how do you duplicate the hard drives so that you don't have to go through the entire process of formatting, installing software, patches, etc?

Basically I need to assume that there is a special way so that you can input the appropriate Windows CD key for each machine. Do you have to use sysprep? And then a ghosting software like Acronis or Norton Ghost?

Basic rundown:
*Have four identical machines that need to even be identical (other than CD key) software wise.

*I would like to activate the primary "source" image so that it is activated and validated to install all of Windows XP updates, including IE7

*I then need to have the above "source" hard drive duplicated to the other three hard drives, without any conflict with Microsoft (will need to change CD-Key for the other three Windows instances)

Answer:Exact same hardware - Duplicating Hard Drive with OS Installed

To do what you want to do you need to use sysprep.

With sysprep you get into the audit mode which will allow you to install programs, updates, etc. all without ever activating.

Then, you need to repackage the drive (its one of the sysprep options) and then ghost it to the other drives.

Note that after repackaging the drive you will not be able to edit it in audit mode anymore because when you turn on the drive it will be in the OBE (Out of Box Experience) which is where you type in the user name, computer name, key, etc.
You should be able to find some info on MS's site about sysprep as it is widely used and made for exactly what you want to do.

Hi everyone,

I've got a laptop with a piece of really expensive software that is not transferable. As this software has been upgraded over the years, it has required more system resources in order to run smoothly. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Is it possible to clone the laptop's hard drive onto another one and place the new hard drive into a computer with better hardware???

What would be the best software for this or is it ok to just use Windows 7 System image utility?

Thanks in advance.

So I had another thread about how my laptop wouldn't start and finally I bought a new hard drive. It just came today and put it in and used my old (very old) Windows XP Home Edition (2002 edition sp1) CD and installed it.

The hard drive install went smoothly and the XP install was fine, but now I have NOTHING!

It's not reading a bunch of my hard ware like the internal network adapter (so no internet), the speakers/sound (there is sound but no volume controls), some video "codec" thing.

There's a bunch of stuff listed in the Device Manager with a yellow "?" next to them and it says I need to reinstall the drivers but when I do that it says I can't without the CD, which doesn't exist. I cannot go online to find the drivers because it's not picking up my network adapter.

Help please this is so frustrating!

Thanks!

Hi! It's my first time posting here and I'm currently confused as to what exact hardware problems have caused my desktop to repeatedly freeze and shutdown.

My specs are as follows:
CPU: Intel i7 920
GPU: Nividia Geforce GTX 660 Ti
Hard Drives: 1. Corsair Force GS 240GB SSD (For OS and Games) 2. A Seagate ST31000528AS HDD (For Storage and misc. data)

My computer has been suffering constant freezes and forced reboots the past two months and I've had no idea whats causing it. The computer mainly freezes when I startup my computer - often freezing immediately after logging in. It should also be noted that the computer freezes and does not display a BSOD. A characteristic of the freezing is that the CPU fans get extra loud and just stays at that volume, however upon checking the CPU it's not actually overheating at all. As such I'm lead to believe it might not be a CPU problem, but more of a harddrive problem - specifically since I run two hard drives at the same time.

The problem is that I've run tests for both CPU and Hard drive and they both report to be working perfectly. I used the Seagate Seatools to scan for errors on both my hard drives and they both passed a full test. I also stress loaded my CPU with the HotCPU program, and my system worked perfectly fine. My computer also runs perfectly during safe mode, which is perplexing.

When I do get my computer to work, I'm able to run high performance games - eg. Heroes of the Storm (Ultra),... Read more

I have an hp pavilion 6700 laptop and decided to downgrade to xp from vista for performance reasons. Doing this reformatted my hard drive completely and now none of my hardware is detected i.e graphics card, sound card, network etc etc. I cannot even connect to the net to run a driver scan as my network connections are blank and not showing anything. I am not even sure which drivers i should install. I tried to install a nvidia driver but it will not even start to install because no graphics card is detected. My PC locks up on boot. When starting, It says cannot find bootable drive or harddrive has failed. If I get into the bios and set the defaults and save and let it run, it will boot into Windows. However this happens every boot and it is really annoying. I have also seen where you want to do something and it may say drive is locked. This is a new harddrive  (1)TB to replace the old drive that was doing the same thing. I have also updated the BIOS to the latest with no issues. however I can't fix this. Hope someone has a solution. Thanks -Peter

Hi all, A friend has just called me and explained that he has just reformatted his hard disc drive and re-installed his Windows 98 operating system. Now, on rebooting all is well apart from the fact that Win 98 hasn't found his second hard disc drive. He says he hasn't altered anything Master/slave/secondary etc. so what can he do to sort it.I remember it cropping up on this forum some time ago but can't remember the outcome.Cheers, in advance, Kinger!

Answer:Win 98 can't find 2nd hard drive

The second hard drive is one of those dockable plug in type. He simply plugs it into the front of his PC and he can lock it in place.

I downloaded a game from download.com. Installed it. Clicked the icon to start the game and "poof" I get the "your computer is shutting down to protect itself" blue screen.

I tried to repair windows but it tells me it doesn't appear I have *any* hard drives, which is making me wonder if it's a virus or maybe hardware... I can't even reformat with a new install of windows because of the same issue.

However I ran some diagnostics from those scary DOS-looking screens you get to from the boot/setup commands, and it says there's a drive there.

(I cant get to windows through safe mode or last config either)

Any ideas/suggestions?

Hello everyone,

just now I tried to boot my pc when he "told" me he couldn't find the requested boot device. I checked my BIOS settings: the hard drive was selected as my primary boot device, as normal. When I had a look at the "devices" tab, I saw a list of the available SATA's. SATA 2 was my CD-ROM drive but SATA 1 wasn't recognized.

In short: my BIOS settings don't seem to be wrong but the computer just can't find the hard disk. I haven't made any hardware changes recently.

As always, any help would be appreciated.

Greetings

I have a Compaq Presario S4020WM and 40 Gigs is no longer enough for me, after 4 years. I'm wanting something bigger. Compaq said it must be 5400, but I think the computer may accept 7200 RPM. They also recommend 120 GB, but I think I can have more than that. Can I? I looked at WalMart and Newegg, but can not decide on one. I'm planning to be a DJ for a radio station, so I need at least 100 Gigs, but I would like to have 200 Gigs or more. I just want to make sure I get a hard drive that will work for my computer.

Plus, do I need to increase the wattage of the power supply? The limit is 200W, so I am not sure.

Thanks.

Thunder

Answer:Help me find a hard drive, please.

I have never had any problems replacing 5400 RPM drives with 7200 RPM driver. They are just a little bit faster. I had a 5 year old HP with 866MHz processor and 40GB IDE HD. I bought a 7200 RPM, 300 GB, 16 MB cache HD and put it in there just fine. Windows read the entire 300GB on one partition. I don't see why a big 7200 RPM IDE drive wouldn't work for you either. HD space is actually quite cheap now days, you should be able to find the storage space you're looking for at around $100. Here are my 2 personal favorite sites to shop PC parts, because of the nice price comparison:

http://www.pricewatch.com
http://techspot.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php?page_id=11
http://www.newegg.com

I think you need an IDE drive (or EIDE), not SATA (Serial ATA)

I think this is your computer:

Hi,

I was wondering if someone on here could help me. I was trying to find out my hard drive speed as it is the lowest score on my setup. I downloaded a small speed checker program and ran it. It was set to read mode and was writing a log file. I then switched it to write test and got a message saying the it would destroy data, I assumed it meant the log file and clicked ok.

All seemed well until suddenly the computer restarted. It then could not find the systems files. I checked the bios and found that it was trying to boot to "apti drive", whatever that is, and so I changed it back to my hard drive. Still it wouldn't fire up.

I have been looking through the forums and have put in the win 7 disk and tried to repair it, also bootrec, bootsect/ mbr, nothing works.

I downloaded an updated bios file which seems to have loaded ok.

I am showing a hard drive in setup and everything looks fine. When I am in cmd prompt and try to change to C drive, it doesn't recognise it. In cmd the drive is showing as X, all I can get is my cd drive which has changed to D.

It is as if my hard drive has vanished. I am assuming that the program wiped my start up files, but I can't understand why I cannot reinstall them. I also tried to reinstall win7, but it can't find a drive to install to. I am getting a bit desparate now please help.

It looks like my hard drive has just vanished.

It only has CD Drive, no floppy Drive.

I know that during the setup, and before getting the message , you can press F6 to load SCSI/RAID controllers, i do not know if I have to press it, and then F2 for recovery. However, this computer only has CD Drive, no floppy Drive.

Any suggestion to fix this problem?

I have a Western Digital WD1200B011 external hard drive with 120Gb of nominal storage capacity.

I just formated my computer and when I attempted to connect the external hard drive, the computer states that the drive K: is not formated. As a consequence, I cannot access my external drive. I certainly don't want to format since I don't want to lose the information stored in it.

I've tried dowloading WD support software. I performed a disk check and apparently it turned out OK, although when looking at the drive properties: 0 bytes of space and 0 bytes of free space is displayed ??!!!!

So I've tried Recovery Data software as well with limited success.. panda recovery, recuva, savemyfiles, etc,...

My question is... is it wise to format the hard drive and later try to recover the data using data recovery software????

I'm guessing that way the computer could recognize the external hard drive, and performing a data recovery could be easier, considering i'm not intending to use the external disc until I get the data back...

Any suggestions.... thanks!!!

I recently installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my main computer, this computer has 2 onboard USB3 ports and a PCI-E USB3 adapter card with 4 more ports; I have two Dockmaster dual USB3 hard drive docks. Before when I had Windows 7 and there was a hard drive in each separate dock they showed up separately in Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media but now they show up as if they're two hard drives in the same dock:

Code:
Before on Windows 7:
Eject USB To ATA/ATAPI Bridge
- HD1
Eject USB To ATA/ATAPI Bridge
- HD2

Now on Windows 8.1:
Eject USB To ATA/ATAPI Bridge
- HD1
- HD2

despite the fact that they are in separate docks attached to separate controllers.

There are times I may not want to eject HD1 but only eject HD2 or visa versa so how to I get these to appear as they used to in Windows 7? Both USB3 controllers appear to use the same Renesas chip and driver and there doesn't seem to be any configurable items in the device manager properties.

Hello everyone,I have an Hp Envy x360 15 w160nz with a 256gb M.2 ssd and i want to expand the storage by installing an hard drive. In the support page of my product, under the voice manuals selecting the english language (link here: http://support.hp.com/it-it/product/HP-ENVY-15-w100-x360-Convertible-PC/8499294/model/9136993/manual...)i found the service manual that says that i can install it by buying the HP Hard Drive Hardware Kit 808238-001.Althought in the title the manual says that it refers toHP ENVY x360 m6 ConvertibleModel numbers: m6-w000 ? m6-w099Model numbers: m6-w100 ? m6-w199HP ENVY x360 ConvertibleModel numbers: 15-w200 ? 15-w299that doesen't seem to match with my (non m6) Hp Envy x360 15 w160nz.I already opened the notebook and found the sata port but there wasn't the sata cable and the rubber to mount the HDD.Do you confirm that is safe to buy it? Will it work? I have doubts because it is pretty expansive, it costs more than 100? from the official supplier of HP parts here in italy and i don't wanna waste my money.I am not able to contact the assistance because the site says that is temporarly unavailable. Thanks for your advices.Best reguards,Giovanni.

I am trying to reinstall windows 8, but when I do it says it can only find the MBR and that my disk isn't large enough.  My hard drive is 500GB and the partition says it is 14 and it can't find any other partitions or the rest of the hard drive.

I can only boot into the system using the disk (which I can get into a cmd prompt).

Any suggestions?   I came across this because my computer wouldn't load anymore and just keep scanning for disks for days.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Can't find entire hard drive only MBR

WIth CMD on the windows 8 install disk, I ran diskpart and it only shows Disk 0 , Status: Online, Size 14 GB, Free 0B.  Nothing else.

Hello,

Where in windows can I find the specs for my hard drive, like:

1. Interface
2. Spindle Speed
3. Buffer memory (is this the same as write caching?)
4. Latency

Can you find this information in Windows somewhere, or do I need to physically open it up (it is a regular internal hard drive that I bought a box for at the same time and the store put them together to make it a USB external hard drive) and find the printed info to determine?

Also, do most external drives that are sold and marketed as "external" use some cooling or fan device, or do they rely only on metal type and design for cooling? The reason I ask is I am pretty sure the box that contains the hard drive is not cooled in any way, and usually feels pretty warm to the touch. Since it has a switch maybe I am better off not letting it run 24/7 like I do my computer and the internal hard drives?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Where do I find my hard drive specs?

Just look up the specs of the make and model at the appropriate manufacturer's website.

My girlfriend got frustrated one night and started uninstalling and deleting random things things....I'm sure these stories always end well

After this, she was trying to reboot her computer and got the message that hal.dll was missing and the computer could not start. It doesn't get to the windows loading screen, or to the point where safe mode could be entered, it just blanks out after showing the HP logo and gives that message. After skimming forums for some time, I tried creating a recovery center disk, which could not load because of missing files on the hard drive. I managed to eventually find a windows boot disk and tried it today, it failed the first 4 times, each time giving the name of a missing file that caused setup to fail (different file each time). After that, it made it to the end of the setup process, and gave 3 options. To repair windows, install it, or exit. When I try to enter to install it or repair it, I get the same message. That no hard disk is installed and setup cannot complete....I've been through the 'PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility' that is on this computer, the only option I can actually get to before the error message comes up, to run the hard disk self test, doesnt seem to accomplish anything, and I am at a loss, not sure what to do, I'm certainly not happy with her using my new laptop though, for I fear it will soon meet the fate of hers

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We spent all evening and half the night trying to get rid of Antivirus Action, and somehow the last step wouldn't work. It said to delete the hosts file, which I did, but then the one that I downloaded wouldn't run. After trying everything, I gave up. It was past 1 AM, so I just left it sit and went to bed. This morning, the computer shows a message that it can't find the hard drive, that no operating system is found. Not sure what happened during the night, but it obviously wasn't good.

WAHHHHH. So were all those hours last night totally in vain and we've lost it all?

This is an old XP system of our daughter's, so no earthshaking life-or-death documents--just a LOT of pictures. We were checking her backups last night and discovered that it is not writing to the DVD that she thought she backed up to, so all of this year's pics will be lost if can't revive the thing. Is there any hope?

Hello there,
First of all, in most cases we're able to at least access the disk to salvage data.
Do you have an XP CD at hand we can use?

I will move this topic to a more appropriate forum.

I have just purchased a Campaq Presario laptop v3607TU. It came with only "FreeDos" installed. If I boot up, it goes to the c prompt, and I can see call the directories on the hard drive.

I inserted my Windows XP bootable disk into the CD/DVD slot, and restarted. It booted from the CD, and the setup files begin to be read. Then I get a message that says, Setup cannot find any hard drives on your computer. The only option is F3 QUIT.

Any helps available?

Thanks

Hi, I have a windows XP Prof. machine. I turned it of last night, and came home today, tried to turn it on, but wouldn't turn on. Bought a new power supply and comp. turned on and all, BUT while booting, It wouldn't sense the hard drive. This is a good Power supply, and all things are working. It sensed the CD drive, and floppy. I connected the HD to another computer, and the other computer would not boot up because it could not sense the hard drive either. PLEASE help me!

Answer:COMP Cant find Hard drive!

Check the MS/SL jumper on the hard drive. Is the hard drive showing up in either of the computers bios? That is does it show the correct size etc? If the hard drive will not show up in either computers bios it is probably dead. If you go to the hard drives manufacturers web site they usually have some kind of diagnostic program you can download to check the drive.

I am building an ASUS S62E laptop for a friend who wants Windows XP installed on it. The laptop is equipped with: Intel T7500, 2GB RAM 667 and a WD 80GB SATA hard drive.  After running WD Lifeguard tool to partition and format the hard drive for Windows XP, I attempted to install XP.  Windows, however stops every time and exits the install because it can't locate a hard drive.  The message comes up saying that I should check the connections or install the hard drive's software to format the drive, which I did several times.  The bios recognizes all 80GB of the WD hard drive, and I even installed PCBSD OS with no problems.  However, my friend wants XP on the drive.  I reformatted the drive with WD Lifeguard, and Windows still can't find the hard drive.  What can I try?

Answer:Windows XP can't find my hard drive

You need SATA drivers, probably.

So, I'm running XP and a while back I reinstalled windows because of a few errors(non hard drive related). Turns out when I did so i reinstalled on my second, smaller hard drive. After realizing my mistake I once again reinstalled windows and in deleting that second partition I may have deleted the actual hard drive from the computer. My problem is I dont know what type it is if I need drivers, and the Device Manager only sees one drive (the larger one)...

How bad did I mess up?
Does anyone know how I can get both hard drives recognized and get all the space I paid for?

I appreciate any and all help.
Thanks in advance!

I have just recently bought a laptop installed with windows vista. I'm not saying vista is bad or anything, but I'd rather just go back to xp due to familarity and reliability.

The problem is, when I boot from the cd, xp can't find the hard drive. This is where I'm stuck.

I have a compaq presario c500, with a gig of ram, 80 gigs of hard drive space, and a 1.73 processor.

I don't want to dual boot.

I want to do a clean reinstall of XP. It boots ok from the CD. But when it gets to the point of dealing w/hard drive - it says there is no drive present. So I get bumped out of the sequence or it crashes. Help, pleease. Thank you ahead of time.

Answer:XP reinstall can't find hard drive?

If this is a SATA drive you may need to install the drivers first. You need to hit the F6 at the beginning of the install.

If this is an IDE drive, check your cables

Did this drive work previously?

I have monitored some past posts and haven't found a solution yet. I am rebuilding an older desktop to get it back running. I have formatted and partitioned the had drive (thru another computer), installed it into my desktop. During the windows XP install it indicates that the hard drive can't be found. I installed the drivers disk and made the Raid driver required and installed it and got the same result. I can't seem to get the hard drive located to install windows on it.
P4 computer
windows XP SP1
and all system disks from Dell that came with the system. Any ideas????
looking for a solution to get windows installed and up and running. Don't want to spend a large amount of time and money as this is an older desktop. Thanks

Answer:Windows XP can't find hard drive

Bad hard drive, or bad install.
You are using Service Pack 1. Windows XP only works on the first 133 GB of a hard drive. You may need a Windows Disk with Service pack 2 or 3 to propertly detect and format the hard drive if larger than 132 GB... Or use a non-Dell version of Windows XP.
The product ID on the Windows sticker will still enable the enstall if you have a borrowed OEM disk of Windows XP.

Hello all, I am pleased to know that HP has this kind of assistance for us troubled folk. And, I am more than pleased to be here. A year ago, I purchased this computer for my wife who is a realtor. At the time she had no desk top computer. To be honest, I've never paid much attention to this computer as long as it worked for my wife. This computer used Windows 8 and my computer uses Windows 7. To be honest, I am not at all familiar with working around Windows 8 so need help. I recently ordered and added an external 1 TB Seagate hard drive and Star Tech USB SATA Hard Drive Docking Station. I don't know how to locate this hard drive. I also don't know how to format it for use. Where do I go to find out where this new hard drive is? What do I do to format it for use. Finally, how should I identify this hard drive? Should I call it an "H" or "J" drive? Thank you all for any help you can provide. MusicManBob

No need to re-fomatte it. >>> Should I call it an "H" or "J" drive? You can call it anything from A: to Z: . System may use some letters already (A:, B:, C:, D:. Answer:Where to find upgrade for hard drive

Can't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to use any standard IDE hard drive.Good prices at, for instance, Scan of Bolton:click here40GB to 120GB from £25 to £40 - usually the slightly more you pay the better the GB value i.e. an 80GB Western Digital Caviar SE is £31 and increasing the GB capacity by 50 per cent sees the price only go up to £40.
