Preferred Solution: Dell Upgrades And Reviews READ READ!!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

I have a dell laptop, D620. When i first put it on the screen was loading funny. as i move the mouse over it a square at time would come in...then when i tried to boot it again. it said new user.. then it just woulnt boot got read error hit control alt delete...i called Dell they said hold fn key and hold start but it went into diagnostic mode. in a few minutes they said HARD DRIVE must be replaced.

My problem is now... that to recover the data companies want from $500 to 25oo to recover the data... is there any program or thing i can do to try to get my files back?

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

My CD Drive has started giving me problems.
It doesn't read all the CD I put in (Particularly Audio CDs).

It Plays DVDs fine.
I'm also unable to burn CDs as the system doesn't detect a CD.

Any suggestions on what I should be doing?

Answer:Satellite A100-033 - ODD doesn't read all CDs but read DVDs

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" When clicked it pops up a window saying: "would you like to update your security software and download registry cleaner?" and occasionally a ballon pops out of the system tray saying "Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

again any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Shot in the dark...

Go to the Device Manager and find the entry for your DVD. Right click it and select properties then "Region" and make sure a region is set for the drive. Without a region set it won't play movie DVDs.

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Hello again. I'm back with another problem. I just bought a new DVD burner to put in my Dell Demension 2350. It was almost impossible to get the old CD-RW drive out (I had to rip off the whole front panel of the computer) but I finally got the burner in there. I had a CD-R drive on top and a CD-RW burner on the bottom. I ripped out the CD-RW burner just because it was the easiest to get out, and I hooked up the IDE cables and whatnot like they originally were. Now my computer isn't reading the CD-R drive or the DVD burner. Both units have power to them, the trays slide out and in, but they aren't in My Computer. Is there some sort of master/slave configuration step that I forgot about? Please help. Thanks everyone.

Answer:Dell won't read DVD burner

If they are connected to the same IDE cable, then yes, One drive must be set to master and the other set to slave. The master drive at the end of the cable, the slave drive connected to the second connector on the cable. Consult your owners manual for jumper settings. Many drives today have MA, SL, & CS etched right into the drive case above the jumpers. MA for Master SL for Slave.

So, I was having all sorts of problems installing my win 8 upgrade on my new XPS one 27 machine, and spent alot of time on the phone with Dell trying to get this fixed..
Turns out that Microsoft and Dell have set up a dedicated hot line for Dell XPS owners having issues with their install..
I dont have the number, but if you call Dell Tech Support, they should direct you to that number, if you are having problems installing win 8 on your XPS machine...

BTW, I got Dell to take back my new XPS, and exchange it for a win 8 version, with touch screen!
I have to pay the difference, which is fine, but it was past their normal 21 day exchange time frame, so kudo's to Dell for stepping up to the plate!

I came across a Dell Inspiron 9200 Notebook a couple months back that had a one pixel wide pink link that bisected my screen and I just wanted to share my experience with you. This pink line showed up in the BIOS and during the Diagnostics so it was obviously a LCD issue. There's not much you can do at that point other then replace the screen or just live with it if your out of warranty. Right? Not exactly.

Apparantly there is a known defect with 17" screens on some 9300, 9200, and XPS Gen 2 notebooks. I did a bit of research and found this DELL site that offered some information about it.

The gist is they will replace the screen within 3 years of purchase even out of normal warranty. The problem is 99% of Dell Tech Support doesn't know about this and I had to direct them to their own site and quibble with them about it for a couple hours. The last date of purchase they are honoring is Oct 2006 so we are coming into the last year of this extended recall warranty and I just wanted to let people know they might have another option other then forking over money to have Dell replace a defective product.

Answer:If you Fix Dell Notebooks read this

"Also, Dell will offer refunds to customers who paid Dell to replace defective LCDs with this issue."

"This potential issue applies to Inspiron 9200, 9300 and XPS Gen 2 models only
Only these three systems shipped from Nov. 2004 to October 2006 are potentially affected
Not all systems are affected. U.S. customers who are experiencing this issue, or who have paid to replace an LCD for this issue can call 1-800-624-9896."

My laptop's CD/DVD drive will not read anything anymore. I've tried burning and playing CDs and I also tried to install printer software. I can hear the CD spinning and making clicking noises and my mouse turns into the little CD icon when I first put the CD in the drive like it is going to recognize it, but then nothing else happens. When I tried burning a CD it kept saying please insert a CD, even though there was a CD in the drive and I could hear it spinning. When I tried to install the printer software from a CD the program didn't automatically pop up like it usually does, so I went to My Computer and manually opened the CD drive but there was nothing in the folder to open. I searched the forums and found advice to update from the dell website. Well the only update for my CD/DVD is optional. I installed it anyway and the little bubbles popped up from the corner saying my drive had been successfully flashed or whatever, but when I tried putting a CD in it kept doing the same thing, spinning but not playing.

Hello all,

I've been coming to these forums for years now--and this is the first time I've actually had a problem I could solve just by looking at other people's posts. Here's the background:

My computer was getting slow recently, so I finally had a friend reformat my computer. I saved my files on an external (this was only a few days ago, so I'm not worried about needing to recover files), and used the Windows XP cd to reformat the computer. I did not use any of the Dell cd's, since those seem to install all the crud that makes my computer slow in the first place. After reformatting and re-installing XP, I loaded the normal software (Office, Firefox, AVG...) as well as all the drivers (or what I'm hoping was all the drivers...). Haven't done anything exciting with it in the 3 days since.

This morning, I realize that my computer is giving me an error message when I try to open games (spider solitaire, free cell, etc. - Not sure if this is relevant). I had to leave to go to work, but figured I'd shut down the computer and maybe it would have fixed itself when I got home.

Lo and behold, when I turn it on after work, right after the Dell start-up page, I get an error message: "A disk read error occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart." After reading a few posts here I tried using F8 to get into safe mode--it will not do this. F2 will get me to Setup and F12 to the BIOS, but I'm pretty sure those don... Read more

I have a Dell Latitude D600 that on start up I get the "a disk read error" and will not go any further. When i do a dianostic I get an error on the DST short test fail error code-1000-0146. Is this the darddrive and if so, if I were to just get a new HD will everything be ok?

Answer:dell d600 -a disk read error

Most likely the hard drive has failed, you would need to install a new hard drive and reinstall windows and all your programs.

If you have a Fry's electronics in your area, they have the best prices on the old PATA laptop hard drives, which the D600 uses.

It may be possible to back up important data by using the method described in the link below, when done replace the failing hard drive and reinstall Windows. If this fails to read the drive you can try removing and re-seating the hard drive, then try again.

Save your data

Remove hard drive

What was the apropriate setup program?
How did you place the jumpers?

I am trying to get an old pc running, it is a Dell Dimension XPS R450 and it has a pentium II chip.

When I turn the PC on it makes a bunch of beeping sounds and eventually turns off, i'm not positive what is happening because the none of my monitors (including the one i am using) will recognize the desktop. The PC came with windows nt / 98, however when i put in my windows xp installation CD, the computer stays on (instead of making those beeping noises and turning off).

What I would like to do is figure out why the computer won't hook up to any monitors, so that I can see what is going on in the screen. The monitors I have tried hooking up to it are one HP and one ESA, both are 19-inch color monitors.

Any suggestions? I really don't know much about hardware at all so I have no clue what to do.

Thanks alot!

Hi everyone, I currently own a Dell 7520 15R SE with Dual graphics, I have taken the laptop apart, wiped thermal compound, then cleaned/prepared applied MX4, and now speedfan is displaying all ticks and down arrows  when gpu not is in use, when Photoshop is open then the gpu kicks in and starts displaying temps
The laptop powers 2 1080P screens via HDMI and VGA, it will remain silent, however sometimes the fan when applications are open however air being expelled is cool, if i unplug one screen the fan then goes off/ultra low speed.
CLEANED laptop, NEW thermal paste, runs silent/acceptable quite when 1 screen in use,
goes crazy on 2 screens when apps are open, despite low temps and cold air?
This laptops prevous issues were getting both GPUs to work once upgrading to win8 and 8.1, they are now solved, and bios etc is all latest

Answer:Dell Fan speed problems (is COLD) please read

Maybe a little late to reply, but I'm facing the exact same problem with the same machine. I've had the laptop for more than two years before I first started using a second screen about a year ago and faced the above mentioned problem. As suggested by tech support, I cleaned the fan, reinstalled Windows a couple of times, did all kinds of diagnostics and checks, bios is the latest available (A11)... nothing to report. Today I fitted a new fan and heatsink, that didn't help either. Really frustrating.
Is there going to be any kind of reply from a Dell technician?

Do Dell Vostro 2520 Laptops support RAM upgrades and/or Processor Upgrades? Please explain.

It's been 3 years with Vostro 2529 and I'm extremely satisfied with performance. I just wabt to upgrade the CPU and/or RAM, to continue using for few more years.
Please explain if possible, how and if not, why.

Answer:Do Dell Vostro 2520 Laptops support RAM upgrades and/or Processor Upgrades? Please explain.'s Manual_en-us.pdf
Desktops can be upgraded but it is not easy or cost effective on laptops even if it were possible. Save the money for a new computer. Ram can be upgraded to 8GB. So if you already have 8 gb you are at the max. Read this review for the difficulty of upgrading this model--

Ok, on my forum one of the members asked "I just got 2 new sticks of kingston ddr400 C2.5, can I keep the old one also or do I have to get rid of it?"

Since the old stick is kingstong ddr400 C3, I said ya just put the two new sticks into the ddr slots and put the old stick in the single slot.

my mod says:
"Only issue I can see is the different clock cycles, may get read errors. try it and if it starts acting funny, take the original one out. if the prob goes away, then choose which set you want to stay with."

I disagree with him, what do ya'll think? I said maybe it would if you were changing out different brands and timings, or using a brand that the mobo isn't exactly compatible with.. In that case you'd get more than a "read" error.. Anyways, since it's using the C3 in the single slot and not along side of another DDR stick, I think it'll be fine..

btw, the member who was needing to put this ram in, put it in as I directed and all is well just like I.. KNEW!" hehe

To remove something that refuses to go, I use a program called MoveOnBoot
You right click what you want eliminated, select moveonboot and it offers you choices. You'd select remove on the next reboot.

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

well i have run into a problem with scanning and cleaning steps: 1 a/b
on the " READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal" post. first of all i dont have a softwear antivirus program (yet) so i usually use trend micro. anyways i cannot run trend's scan in normal opperating mode. i just get errors, a AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.9844.0 Offset: 00001d90 error to be exact. after that IE restarts and im back to about blank. the virus couldent be doing that could it? then on further i cant access any explorer window. period. it also creates arrors and restarts explorer. in safe mode i was actually able to get trend micro to work and it found 22 some odd junk files (dlls i think) that i keep finding in my prossesses list. to put it this way, i have been going back and fourth between apm, the cleaner, and about blaster to remove these junk prosseses and they just come back with with what seems to be randomly generated names. back on point, i could not get symantec's online scan to work at all in safe mode. the applet (dont know what else to call it) just hangs there for along time till it come up not avalable.
im planning to put an old version of norton AV and getting all the updates the doing a full scan to see what happens. would agv AV work also? on the same note, cwshredder has come back with nothing everytime ive used it

Just continue completing all the steps in the READ ME FIRST as best as possible. Note any problems along the way but don't bother coming back until all steps are finished. I'll include the READ ME in the steps below. Finish everything and post your HijackThis log at the end.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

I built a PC back in January and its been running great ever since.  Never had any hangups, freezes, or other issues with the build.  Two weeks ago my computer froze unexpectedly and upon restart I received a disk read error.  I tried several tips on the internet to fix it, and eventually the HDD stopped being detected by even the BIOS.  I bought a new HDD and reinstalled vista 64 ultimate and it's been running fine for about a week.  After receiving the disk read error again I updated my BIOS and it seemed to fix the problem for a few days.  Last night it happened again.I've read that this could be caused by a bad HDD, issues with Vista, bad memory, or an overheating issue.  When I run SpeedFan and other temp tools, my computer runs at max at 45-50C under load.  My PSU is still cool, as are all of the components within the case.It starts to freeze in WoW, but at random intervals.  It might be an hour, it might be 4 hours before I have any issues.  I've also had the problem when the computer was idling in vista.  I check the temperature of the system regularly while playing my games, and I doubt that is the issue. As this is a clean HDD with a clean install of vista and runs cool, I'm beginning to think it may be a memory issue.  The following are my system components:   Operating System: Windows Vista? Windows 98SE
Sony DDU 1621 dvd rom

I need a simple explanation that tells me how to get my dvd rom to read data disks. It only reads audio disks and opens all disks in Windows media player. I dont understand how associations work.

Help would be much appreciated

Answer:DVD Rom will only read do I get it to read data?

No it doesnt read dvd's, but I am not really concerned about that, I dont think I have the memory anyway (64 mb ram). My old cdrom had a mechanical problem and I needed something to read disks, so I bought it from a garage sale and I downloaded the software from the Sony site. It used to function normally and read data files.

I want to format the harddrive and I need to know that the dvd rom will read my win98 disk cos it isnt at the moment. I dont understand how to do anything in file where the problem lies? Or is it in the cdrom properties settings area.

Hope this triggers something in you........I appreciate your help

Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

I have some older DVD-R that I had burned data on a few years ago. My Optical Drive on my main PC can't read them. but a drive on a different PC can read them fine.

My main PC can read all regular DVDs (i.e. movies) just fine. I cleaned the lens, deleted the "up/down" registry entries as recommended. Still no solution.

the only hint I have the explorer shows that drive with a symbol of 2 people (see attachment). not sure if this stands for some group policy.

All the data were burned with a different DVD-writer in Germany (some 9 years ago). i don't think it is a region setting issue since this DVD-drive can read original DVDs from all regions. But there may be another clue?
I read about how DVD-R degrade over time... but since my other PC can read them that likely is not the problem.

The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was the realignment. First, I never dropped it (it has been in my PC for years and that didn't move). Second, it seems to read normal DVDs fine. It was suggested if re-alignment really is necessary, other things are out of whack and buying a new one may be better.
I could buy a new one, but also don't want to be defeated by the machine. and the problem coudl be related to windows....

Answer:can't read burned DVD-R, but can read normal DVD

It is possible the DVD-R may be incompatible with your drive. You can search online for a firmware update for the drive. You can re-write to a compatible DVD-R on your other machine perhaps.

My CD-RW drive broke, and Dell replaced it with a new one for free (warranty).

However, the new drive is 48x read but the old one was 52x read. Will this have an impact on anything?

Also, I have 52x CD-R's. Will they work in a 48x drive?

Answer:Solved: Difference between 48x read and 52x read?

There will be no noticeable difference on anything. Chances are that the old one rarely, if ever, actually read at 52.

The 52x on the CD-R's is a measure of their sensitivity and shows the maximum speed that they can be written. Some CD's have a minimum as well, and that is usually more important if they are "high-speed" CD-R's since they won't write properly at very slow speeds. But your CD-R's will write fine at speeds between 4x and 52x, as a minimum range, so there is nothing to worry about.

After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

I have 'took off the CD/DVD drive and reconnected' and the driver also seems to be OK.

Any suggestions or ideas ?

This sound like a drive lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore the drive cannot read from the CD disks.
Mostly the drive replacement is necessary and inevitable. :(

Hey all,
Well, I had some how downloaded av.exe and have had nothing but problems. I even had AVG running at the time and it missed it some how. I used a restore point and that seemed to get rid of it, or so I thought. Unfortunately, I lost Microsoft Excel and Word. I don't know how, but the shortcuts go no where. Then today (three days later) I started getting Windows Antivirus popups again... or was it Microsoft? I forget... but I knew it was av.exe. So, I tried another restore and when it rebooted, AVG found av.exe this time. I removed it and not even internet explorer worked. I then did a full restore and this time I got Internet explorer working.
So, since the last time (a few years back) that I had a virus, you guys really helped, I came here and searched for av.exe (as it's still in the system). I found a thread referring the OP to the READ ME FIRST thread, which was what you referred me to last time too. I started following it and got to running Super Antispyware. I ran it and it found two locations of av.exe. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of where as the directions stated to reboot and then go to preferences and copy the log. Well, the program is gone after the reboot. The shortcuts are there as are the start menu items. But when I click on any of them I get a popup

The other night I downloaded a new Ricoh SD card reader driver and it asked me after installation to restart the computer which I did, only to receive 'Disk Read Error, press ctrl + alt + del to restart.

Restart and same thing, tried the BIOS settings to change around the order of how things were booting up - didn't work.

At first I thought it was because of the driver I installed, then further research showed that Dell has a problem with older laptops having a 137GB limit.

I swapped out my smaller 60GB HD last year for a bigger Western Digital one and am now thinking it has gone past this limit and this is why its happening.

My question is IF this is the problem (and I really don't know if it is) can I take out my hard drive and put it in another laptop that will support a bigger HD, delete some stuff then put it back in my laptop and have it back to normal OR is it likely that the whole drive is corrupted?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Disk Read Error - Dell Inspiron 6000

I think XP SP2 overcame the 137GB limit.

As far as the whole drive corrupt, I would suspect the SD card reader driver as the culprit.

Yes, it is possible to attach a laptop hd to another computer through the USB port using an adapter, like this
this only accepts IDE type drives.
There are more expensive adapters that accept both IDE and SATA drives.

I would not install the hd from this computer into another laptop because the hardware is different and it either would not boot or to boot would make changes and then putting it back into the original laptop would cause more problems.
Simply attach it and use the working laptop to view what is on the hard drive and see if anything actually has to be deleted.

I still think the Ricoh sd card driver is the problem. Unfortunately without being able to boot into windows, even in safe mode to remove the driver is next to impossible.

The systemboard is dell part number 411726100004
It's a segate 30gb hard drive

This was dropped off to me because it was running slowly. The oem hard drive was a maxtor and it died. I put in the segate and it wont read it. The jumper is set to master. it is the only drive on the cable. I tried the secondary ide controller and it wont read the drive either. Is this a bad systemboard? I have also tried other drives to no avail..... Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

I need to get out of the same screen, every time i restart, message says-a disk read error has occured-press ctr-alt-del to restart. I have a dell laptop 8100 inspiron- bios A15- also what would be the boot order for this, or how can i get around this problem. Thanks

Answer:a disk read error has occured-dell 8100

Press F2 when you see the dell screen and see if it recognized the hard drive in the BIOS (about a  third of the screen down). If not you may have a bad hard drive, OR the drive may have gotten slid out of its docking socket. If so, just push it back in until it clicks. Some have a screw and some don't to hold it in, others just a release on the bottom.Let us know what you find.

Morning all,

From what I can see, this seems to be a fairly common problem across computers...

My Dell Inspiron n5010 (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) sporadically won't read DVDs. A couple of nights ago, it took a couple of tries - last night, I couldn't get it to play one at all.

Having looked for various fixes, I have tried the following:

-Updating drivers
-Disabling and re-enabling the drive in device manager
-Going into the registry to remove recommended entries (high/low filters i think? I only had the "high" option, which apparently means that fix isn't for me...)
-Uninstalling any DVD-burning software that may be interfering with my laptop's own DVD player/software.

I'm at a bit of a loss now, I'm not a complete moron when it comes to computers, but i have a fairly limited array of solutions which i am able to attempt before i must ask for help.

So, i apologise in advance if this has been posted before...but does anyone have any suggestions as to how i might fix this?

Many thanks,

Answer:Dell Inspiron laptop unable to read DVDs

Hello and welcome to the forums, PastorofMuppets! (I see you like Metallica too.)

You've mentioned DVDs, does that include CDs and any kind of other optical media too?

Do you have an external USB CD/DVD drive you can try to plug into your system to try out DVDs on?

If you do, try plugging it into your system via USB and playing a disc from the external drive.

Windows 10 did me in (Show me the way to go home (back to W8.1) - Windows 10 Forums), so I want to throw in the towel and build my Windows 8 system from scratch - I have all my files and list of installed apps with their configs. I ordered and received the Windows 8 recovery disk for my computer from Dell.

Except, when I boot the disk, it prompts me to enter the product key. Isn't it supposed to read it from the BIOS on the motherboard?

I should add: Over the summer, I had to have the motherboard replaced. It, too, came from Dell. I presume the technician had the product key reinstalled, because it was working fine at the time.

When I called Dell, they told me to enable legacy boot and make sure secure boot was off. I did both those things, but got the same result. I see there are a myriad of programs out there that will read the product key, but... You guessed it: You need administrative access. And I lost it, when I upgraded to Windows 10.

I could call Dell, but since my system is now out of warranty, they want to charge me for support.

Can anyone help me with this unmitigated disaster?

Answer:Dell Windows 8 recovery disk does not read product key

Dell discs normally are pre-activated and do not require entering a product key. However, you should have a sticker with the product key to use. If its a laptop its usually in the battery compartment. On a desktop its usually on the back or bottom.

Dell has a free forum with users, like this forum, that will help.

What's up guys,

I have a problem with a Dell Optiplex GX240, it does not boot up from the CD that I am trying to format with. Well to start with this is what it says when it is turned on:

It says "Strike F1 to retry to reboot, F2 for setup utility"

When I check the setup utility, and the boot sequence it shows that the CD-ROM is not installed.

I checked the cables and they are all connected properly, it was working before. Does anybody know to make it boot from the CD or install the CD ROM.

Thank you.

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX240 BIOS doesn't read CD-ROM

:wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

In your 3rd screen shot, it shows all other channels (besides Primary Drive 0) set to "OFF". If your CD is on Secondary Drive 0, you have to change it from "OFF" to "CDROM", or possibly "AUTO", and the jumper on the CD drive must be set to Master. I haven't been in an old Dell BIOS in a while, so I don't know if there's a setting for "AUTO", but I do know that right now you have it turned off, and it must be changed. If this doesn't work, then there's a chance the CDROM is dead, or not getting power. If you can open/close it by pushing the button, then it's getting power....

Also, it looks like the BIOS has been reset or the CMOS battery is dead; it shows a date of Dec 10 2001 and the time as being 00:21:24. You can buy a new battery at any PC store or Radio Shack. Ask for a CR2032 (or just say "a computer CMOS battery"). It shouldn't be more than $3-$4.

Sounds like you have a faulty RAM chip in the machine.

Wothwhile trying to reseat the RAM chips first, before replacing in case it is a connection problem.

The chips are likely to be under a panel in the bottom of the laptop, but the manual should advise.

I created dell Factory Restore DVD using dell recovery and backup, it required 2 disks for Factory Restore and 1 disk for drivers and utilities. Also after building the recovery media Dell Recovery tested the media and confirmed the process was successful. Now when I'm trying to reset my system to Factory Settings, it completed disk 1 at 51%, then asked to insert disk 2, so i did and waited for about two hours only to see no progress. It seems that the system ain't reading disk 2. I checked disk 2 on another system and it seems fine with access able data on it. Following a tip on some forum I tried to make a copy of disk 2 using another PC but that didn't work either.
I'm left in the middle of nowhere. My system would neither go back to previous state nor restore to factory settings. What are my options here? Can dell help me?
My system is Dell Inspiron 15 3542

I've had this problem with a few disks actually--disks with media burned on them (I think QuickTime format), but for whatever reason DVDs either work immediately or take only one or two tries before succeeding.

I am trying to install a legit student copy of MATLAB, the disk is brand new but does somehow have one or two scratches, very minor. Usually the drive tries to read the disk for maybe 30 seconds before giving up, occasionally it spins without any sign of stopping until I pop the disk out when it starts to get hot. Clicking on the drive in the 'my computer' menu just tells me I need to insert a disk into the drive.

All of my drivers should be up to date. Also, for the record, the disk is fine and will run on other computers, just like the previous disks it's been unable to read.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1521 DVD RW drive will not read MATLAB install disk

Sounds like a bad disk drive. I had a dell Inspiron 1720 that would do the same thing. I finally gave up on it and bought an external DVD drive and it worked fine. You could try ordering a replacement DVD drive from Dell.

So my new laptop (as you can see the specs below) is coming and i preordered Norton AntiVirus 2005 with it but after doing some research on this forum it seems if i get the computer (tomorrow it arrives ) and the software is uninstalled and still in the box - which since i bought AV in addition to my computer and not as an option it should be - it would be wise for me to return it for a refund (minus 15% ) and get something else. . .

people are saying Avast is best . . . i don't mind spending money - i just want the most kick ass antivirus program out there . . . thought it was norton (im such a noob) guess not if it slows you way down, is hard to uninstall, and has buggs . . .

what do you think??? Send it back and buy something else?? Just stick with it?

Answer:Bought norton AV '05 from DELL, then i read this forum . . send it back?? Help pleez

Well if you can return it for a refund I would. You can always use Avast or AVG. Norton is very overrated & full of bloat IMO.

I have a Desktop PC it's a Dell Dimension 4700 This morning I come over to theres a black screen with the message "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart"

Of course I hit con+alt+del and PC restarts with same message..

At that time I plugged in another HD to the Dell and it fired up perfect. I took the potential bad HD and stuck it in another slave on another PC (a Pavilion HP) and I get the message error reading disk. I can safely assume this HD is gone.

Is there a way to hook the HD to another slave and boot to a good HD and download a hard drive fixer program and then select the HD to fix? Any help fixing or recovering the data from the bad HD would be most greatly appreciated

I have a discrepantcy.

I want to upgrade my dell power supply. Its currently a dell supplied 305w. Everyone says its alright to upgrade higher, even if it isnt a DELL part#, because a mobo will only takes what pwr it needs.
However, Dell Techs tell me that you CANNOT add a higher power supply to this system because it might damage the mobo.

So what I want is for anyone to post with info on them upgrading to off the shelf pwr splys and how it has worked or not worked with their DELL 8300 or 8400. Mine is a 8300, but info on a 4600 would be helpful as well. Let me know!!!

Thanxs guys in advance......

Answer:Current and Past Owners of Dell 8300-4600- or 8400 READ!!!!

I would bet lots of money that the dell people just say that because they want you to have to buy a dell replacement Power Supply. . . i would say ignore it and if it does by some microscopic chance fry the mobo, just get a new one. But make sure the newone (if you need one) is the same socket type (obviously).

Re: DVD-ROM sudden cant read DVDs, but itcan write on empty DVD and can read/write CD

I don't burn much of anything, but when I have needed to, I have found it difficult. Got XP SP3 too, and what I have done is try to find software that will pick up the drives correctly. For example, I have one drive currently that reads in Windows as a DVD ROM, but it's a CD/DVD +/- burner. I had success with CDBurnerXP for a little while, then it wouldn't work, so I switched to Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012, which I got free on a giveaway. I know it works, because I just burned a couple of rescue disks recently. I have heard that the same software version 6 works real well and is free, but I haven't tried it, so I can't say.

Maybe if you try a few burner programs, you'll run across one that will work...

Just to add...I've had to be persistent to be able to burn. Most of the time, when it has worked, it took numerous efforts to get it do so. This could mean trying one program, then another, and so on...

I have 3 DVD-R disks with content (documents, graphics files, etc. ? NO VIDEO files) that was backed up from a previous computer. I cannot read (or even see) any of the content from these DVDs. I have an identical (type) DVD-R with video content, and it opens and runs just fine.

I have a Toshiba Qosmio and its DVD drive reads: DVD multi-recorder; DVD rewritable; CD rewritable. When I insert any of these 3 data DVDs, the DVD drive (F on my machine) that usually says ?DVD-RAM? next to the icon (in Explorer) now says ?CD drive? (although the icon itself says ?DVD-ROM? at the bottom of the icon). If I click on the F: drive icon, or attempt to ?open? files from the F drive, I get an error message that says ?F: not accessible. Incorrect function.? If I right click on the drive and go to properties, it shows that all the disk space is used (which should be correct ? each of the 3 DVDs should essentially be full of content), but I cannot see any of the folders or files on this drive, even when I click ?mixed media? as the file type to open (rather than video files). Again, inserting the exact same type DVD-R disk with video content into this drive works just fine.

I have attempted the same procedure on my Dell Latitude D600 (DVD drive reads: DVD-ROM; CD rewritable). The DVD drive in this computer shows up in Explorer as ?DVD/CD-RW drive.? When I insert one of these data disks into this machine and double click on the CDC drive icon, nothing show... Read more

OK now that ur caught up.. I found a entire top peice of my laptop except it has the lcd digitizer combo. that doesn't concern me.. that does it what extra hardware componenets do i need to use the touch screen? or is the motherboard the same and it jut plugs into it no converters or boxes w/e it would have.  AND YES there was the option to make this one a touch screen for like 150$ extra but i got her an upgraded i5 processor instead.. so ithis isn't so far fetched that its crazy... currently it has the VAW00 LA-9104P  Rev: 1.0 (A00)    09-13-2012 made in china but *** im tired of typing i thimnk i've given more than enough info to get us started.. thanks guys..

Yes, the mainboard is the same -- as long as you get the complete top assembly with hinges, you can add the touch panel to the system.  Whether it's worth the added cost is something only you can decide.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
Bitdefender - from step 6
Panda Scan - from step 6
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
HijackThis ---> this is the last scan to run and attach.

You also would have uninstalled Napster.
