250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

Question: 250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

this summer i built myself a new computer. i was having sum trouble getting windows installed and thought it might be 1 of the HD's so i unhooked it. once i got it going i kind of forgot about the 250GB HD until just recently. i hooked it up and formatted it but it only showed up as a 127GB HD when it's supposed to be 250GB. this is very puzzling because on the post screen it clearly reads that it's a 250GB HD.

can someone please tell me what i hav to do to get it working correctly because i'd really like to move my music off of my dad's comp. btw, my system specs are in the sig

Preferred Solution: 250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 250GB HD showing up as 127GB!?

What kind of hard drive do you have? I don't see the sig on the screen so if its there i just can't see it. Also what operating system are you running??

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

Hey guys.
I setup my system on a 250gb hard drive but system reads it as a 127gb. I downloaded the software for converging it to its original form yet it won't let me as it is the C:// drive. If anyone can point me in a direction that might be able to assist, that would be awesome (i.e. a possible partition of the space that wasn't originally read?) THANK YOU!

Answer:Op sys is on 250gb, reads as 127gb

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2? That is the usual cause for this problem.
If you do not, you mayl not be able to partition the drive to anything larger than 132 GB... 127 or so after formatting the partition.
It becomes a catch 22. You could partition and format the hard drive to the 250 GB figure, if you had Windows XP Service Pack 2 to do the setup of the NTFS partition. It will work once as the full 250, or so, once it has Windows on it, but getting Windows on it prevents that.
There are solutions online you should be able to find with a Google search, but they require jumping through a few hoops.
One solution is to setup the hard drive as a slave in a computer that has Service Pack 2... or setup the drive with two partitions while slaved in another computer.
Alternately, set it up as 127 GB, then upgrade Windows with the Service Pack 2 disk you buy from Microsoft for $3.40, then use partition magic or Acronis to enlarge the partition.

I just got a new Seagate 160gb drive, and after formatting it with Seagate's DiscWizard for Windows, it's showing up in My Computer with only 127gb! It mentions compatibility issues for drives over 137gb... so wouldn't it show 137gb instead of 127gb? Still, that's obviously not what I want either. Now, I'm running Windows XP with SP2, and I thought the 137gb glitch was only present if you don't have SP1... Is this a bios issue?
Anyway, after I saw the drive with only 127gb, I went into disc management and added a partition to the unallocated space (21gb).

So my main question is- unless there's an easy fix to get the full space of the drive in a single partition (that doesn't require booting from a floppy), will my current setup have any possible negative issues in the future? As it is, I have my 80gb system disc, and the new Seagate with two partitions- one 127gb, and one 21gb.
If there's no problem with this, I don't mind having two partitions...

Thanks in advance!

Just installed my new Seagate 200 Gb IDE hard drive into Pyzchob!tch. I needed to flash the motherboard BIOS to get it to detech the full size under the BIOS, but now i have the problem with Windows Xp Pro only Detecting 127Gb (or 137 394 356 224 bytes) of the hard drive.

I have created the partition with using Partition Magic 8.

According to my calculactions, I should be seeing about 195Gb (or there abouts).

Any one can help me gain more hard drive space on my 200 Gb Hard Drive?

I just installed a Western Digital 200GB Hard Drive with no partitions, just one massive lump of space. I installed XP Home and it only shows 127GB of space total though. To be sure I checked the properties of the drive as well as Computer Managment under Administrative Tools and have the same thing. Could this be an issue with my motherboard just not being capable of recognizing the amount of space? If so can I (and if so how) update the drivers for my motherboard.

I am not sure how to find out what kind of board I have... its the one that came with the Dell 4500 desktop I bought about 2 years ago.

Hi to allI have just installed Maxtor 250GB HD into my P4 PC. Cmos bios reports the HD as 250GB during POST and Win XP C: drive properties reports that capacity is 250GB and used space is 134GB!!The only thing on the drive is the OS (winXP) it was brand new I partitioned/ formatted it using my XP cd. If I look at the properties individually on C: drive (windows, program files, docs and settings, etc) they add up to approx 1.5GB but C: properties is 134GB?any suggestions as to why XP is reporting the use incorrectly and a possible fix much appreciated.TIA

Answer:250GB HD showing too big used space

I recently installed a pair of 160gb drives and found on the Maxtor site that in order for the true capacity to be recognised by Windows you need 2 things[otherwise it only recognises up to 137gb];1 - to be running Windows SP12 - to run the Maxtor Big Drive Tool[available from Maxtor support website]

Answer:New 250gb hd 131 showing? Partition Help??

Plain-Jane XP by default will only recognize drives up to 132GB. If you create an SP2 slipstreamed CD using autostreamer, it will recognize the full drive upon install. Or, complete your install, update to SP2 and then use the "diskmgmt.msc" command in the "run" line to format the remaining hard drive as a second partition.

I had a 250GB SATA HDD laying around with multiple with a couple of so I ordered an enclosure. Installed easily, everything was compatible. I used the format option from right clicking the drive in "My Computer" I formated it and I can only format it to 9.40GB using NTFS. How do I make it so I can use my entire 250GB?

See if there is any other partitions on there. Also i would recommend using one of the Disk Formatting tools in the Windows Index Stickies link in my sig. In that Index there is a topic called Recommended Software for certain tasks. At the bottom of the first post you will see Formatting tools. GParted, DBan, KillDisk will get the job done for you.

Hi folks,

I recently bought a new Hitachi 250GB SATA hard drive and created one primary partition of full size using Partition Magic on a boot disk. I then installed windows xp on it (no service packs). Straight after install I noticed it showed as a 232GB drive (fair enough) but also said around 113GB of space had been used.

I have now installed some more applications and the total file size of everything on the drive totals 24.1GB. My C drive shows 134GB used with 98.3GB free.

I guess it's something to do with partitioning larger HD's but I'm new to all that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a password locked HD(30Gb), that I finally gave up on. I purchased a 250Gb replacement drive. When I go into the bios to check to see if the system detects it, it show 137Gb, when it did not show anything with the locked HD. I also check to see if there was a bios update, but there was none, just the same as what's already on my 1100. I thought I'd try to use the new drive, while I wait for another replacement, it started to format at 250Gb.

I just wondering why it shows 137Gb. I know this is an issue with some older bios and P3 systems, but I did not expect it with a P4 system.

Anyone else experience this? Any problems if I keep the 250Gb installed, or should I order a 120Gb.

Answer:New 250Gb showing 137Gb on a Dell 1100 bios

Usually this problem is caused by formatting the drive with a verision of Windows XP that has no Service Pack, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 1a. None of those will format higher than 137 GB.
If you switch to an install disk with Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3, you can format up to 1.5 Terrabytes without problems.
Alternately, once you format at 137 GB, use a partition editor such as Ghost, Partition Magic, Source Forge, or Acronis (I recommend Acronis)... to extend the partition to the full size of the hard drive.
Either way, you have a cost.

Hey guys,

I have a home made computer, System is running off a 250gb hard drive. When I first formatted it, it was showing 232gb (this was ages ago) but somewhere along the way it has changed to 184gb. If I open disk management it shows the drive cannot be extended to fill the space, and even shows that 184gb is the maximum that can be used. However when I use diskpart to look at it in command prompt it shows 232gb as the size of the drive. I have tried extend in diskpart, but it does not let me fix the problem.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1.

Would love any help that anyone can give me!

Answer:[SOLVED] 250gb (232gb formatted) drive showing as 184gb?

Welcome MrMatt90.

Does your system only have one hard drive?

Is the drive you mention the one with your Operating System installed on?

Have you created any backups?

Are there any partitions?

When was the last time you ran chkdsk? I suggest you run it on your drive...
> - Click the start globe/button
> - type cmd and run cmd.exe as administrator
> - type chkdsk /r ?: (replacing the ?: with the drive letter, probably c:)
> - it will ask to run scan on next restart, type Y and restart.

if this is not the case then check with settings on the sata controller although i dont think this should be it.
anyway, havent had this problem for ages so i cant really be certain.
anyhow. other users will advise aswell i think

I've searched the forum, and maybe I'm asking it the wrong way, but I have a 160gb HD that windows is only reading as a 127gb. My problem is that removed my original 40gig HD and Replaced it with this one then installed a fresh copy of XP professional. I installed XP on the D: drive (a 5gig partition, but for some reason everytime I want to install a program, windows want to use the D: drive as the default instead of the C: drive which has all the room..but that's another problem). I was wondering, if I partition the C: drive using something like Partition Magic, will this free up the extra space that's not visible? Or is there a way to do it in windows XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just a point in the right direction!

oh, and if you could also point towards a place that will tell me how to change the default drive where programs install this would be great....I recently, accidentaly installed a couple of games on my D: drive and was left with almost no space untill I deleted them (after having played about 45% of the way through)!

Answer:I searched & know why theres a 127gb limit, but how do I fix it?

I have had a similar problem befor. I tried partition magic and yes it works. The extra room will be on the outside of the platter, So if you wanna make the c: bigger, you will have to first move the d:\ slider over to take of the remaining 34gigs. then go to the beginning of d:\ and move that slider to the right to make it smaller, then you will have a gap between the 2 drives. Then slide c:\ over to close the gap. Then you will reboot and it will do it on boot, then presto

I am using a Barracuda 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s 250-GB Hard Drive. About a week after installation of Windows Vista premium 32bit I suddenly noticed that the drive started showing only 127 GB of hard drive space. I am very puzzled by this because I know 48bit LBA is enabled so the 127 GB limit should not apply. Indeed in Disk Management it shows the C partition as 232gb NTFS and populating the drive in the disk properties yields the same size, but a chkdsk run will only read 127gb. I ran Seagate's seatools hard drive diagnostics on the drive for three hours with no errors. I combed through my eventvwr log back to installation and I find no disk errors.
What could be causing this?

Hi everyone

I've read all of the threads on here (and theres alot) regarding problems similar to mine but after following all the advice given on those threads still can't find a way to fix my own problem.

I am operating Windows XP SP2 and the drives were both fully formatted when i installed the OS (The OS had SP2 already on so i didn't add it afterwards).

I have a Asus P5B MOBO and both drives are connected via Ultra100 TX2 card via IDE

The bios show both drives as being 200GB as it should and i have even updated my bios so it is the lastest revision.

I've included a screen shot of my computer management and also of HDinfo showing that my drives are mean't to be 200GB. I have had this problem for ages and it's really starting to grate.

Advice and solutions greatly appreciated

320GB HD (Western Digital) (L: drive) no partition but had about 114GB currently occupying it.

The 114 GB was from te C: drive.

The plan was to archive files from the C: drive to the L: drive, install XP Pro on the C: drive (wiping the D: drive in the process) and then all would be well.

Current configuration
XP Pro is installed, however now the C: drive, instead of being 160GB is now 127GB and the L: drive isn't called anything because under Disk Management it's labels as "unallocated" and also reads 127GB (God I hope I didn't lose 114GB).

I'm in the process of installing all windows updates, but I still don't know what to do. I keep reading sites that suggest the BIOS doesn't support that large of HDs but I know they were working before and nothing has changed with the BIOS.

So what to do? I'm sorta freaking out.

I first posted on this topic with a suspected Malware problem which is now fixed.

The problem i am left with now is that i have a 500gb hard drive which was supplied with my computer is NTFS and has allways only had data on it. Before the trouble started there was around 300gb of data on the drive.

I had a problem a while ago with a virus and was advised to reinstall windows. As i wanted more disk space i bought a brand new 1tb hard drive.Whic i installed as a primary drive using the same cables as the old drive. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on it and that drive is working fine as is windows. The trouble is my second drive (which is set as a slave) only shows on My Computer as 127gb and is shown as blank.
When i go into disk management, at the top it lists the drive as being 128gb and 100% free, however below where it shows the drives in shall i say rectangles, it shows the drive as 465gb Healthy (Active, Primary Partition). The drive never had any problems before and was connected while i reinstalled Windows. My computer is fairly new and is a Philips Freevents Quad Core (can't remember model number) with 4gb ram.

Any idea of how to get my data back. Or at the very least how to gett all of my drive back.

The computer has a one tb drive, checking properties in Windows Explorer says that 127gb space is currently in use. I used a freeware program "Disktective" to show the amount being used and what was using it. It also says that 127gb are in use, but only accounts for about a third of it. I ran Disk Cleanup with everything checked that could be a cause, but nothing changed. The computer runs fine, but this massive amount of unaccountable hard drive usage is alarming. Is this normal for Windows 7 and if so, can anybody tell me what's causing it? TIA.

Answer:127gb on 1tb hard drive, most hidden. What is it?

There are plenty of windows function that reserve disk space and hide it from you for example pagefile and hiberfile etc
Try a free program called windirstat it should show you where most of the space is

You could also check system restore to see how much of the drive it is using for backups, on a drive that size it inly needs to be a few percent and I suspect yours may be a lot higher, there are a few known bugs with programs like Avast AV that cause this to rise to 50% which is way to much

My desktop HP P6-2203a has only 1 hard drive bracket but Ive crammed another 1TB WD Blue Caviar in there for backups.(it stays cool) Ive just noticed when I ran my mouse over the system image text it said empty folder but when I opened up manage space in backup and restore, it said system image 127GB? I did a clean install of win 7 not long ago and it didn't work out too well when it came to restoring my documents, photos and pictures. They weren't their just the empty folders? All my downloads were there though. Is there something here I can fix! or is it OK and I should leave it alone?

I had a similar issue when I purchased my 300GB hard drive..WOW what a bastard that was to get XP to show all 300GB..well 28* or whatever you end up really getting...

Anywho mine was a Maxtor and came with some software called MaxBlast to allow me to set my partition settings and by default all I was showing was 127GB as well. I then installed the software under windows and it let me resize it correctly. Have you loaded the software that came with the drive? I know I didnt cause I didnt think that I needed it.

I just got an additional 400GB Western Digital Hard Drive for my computer. I set everything up, and everything is correct. But for some odd reason, it says its only a 127GB hard drive. I'm sure this is a soft ware problem, because the same thing has happened with my first hard drive. Hard drive #1 is a Western Digital 250GB (came with the computer) and it says its 228GB. Whats is the problem? Is this just a defect in windows? I have reinstalled my running system twice over the past 4 months for various reasons. So that does not help. Any ideas?

Thanks a ton,

Last year, I installed my 160GB hard drive, but right now it only appears as having 127GB capacity.

I know hard drives always show up as having less gigabytes capacity than it should, but this is a different problem because the exact bytes shows up as 137,427,943,424. My 160GB hard drive should show up as 159,435,345,231 or something similar as its exact bytes and then something like 148GB as total capacity, but its not showing up like this. I don't know what the problem is, but I remember asking a long time ago and someone said it had something to do with the file system.... I'm using NTFS.

Thanks for your help.

My C: drive appears to be using more space than what I put on it.  When I open my C: drive I have 12 folders listed; three which are using the most memory: Documents and Settings is using 45GB, Program Files is using 10GB, and Windows is using 7GB.  The rest of the folders are using about 3GB so I've taken up roughly 65GB of my 160GB hard drive.  But, my C: drive Properties shows Used space: 127GB, Free space: 15.6GB, Capacity: 143GB.  I know the Operating System and whatnot take up some of the space but it can't be 60GB worth?  What else could possibly be taking up the rest of my hard drive?  Here are my specs: Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, SP 3 (Bought Vista with XP downgrade)Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, 2.4GHz2.39GHz, 2.98GB RAMATI Mobility Radeon 3470, 256MB3 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpmDVD Recordable 8x Max Dual LayerIntel WiFi Link 5100

Check your backups with Rescue and recovery. You can get there by going toStart->All Programs->ThinkVantage->Rescue and Recovery Once program is opened Click "advanced" and then "delete backups"From there you should have a list of current HDD backups on system. If there aren't any here, or not the source of the problem, use Lenovo Tool Box's Disk Space Manager to figure out what is taking up the space. You can get there by going to Start->All Programs->Lenovo Services->Lenovo Systems Toolbox. If you don't see the folder then your system isn't up to date but you can download it manually here.   * P.S. If you are using a windows from Lenovo it will have an hidden F11 partition using anywhere between 10GBs to 20GBs of HDD space. this partition can be removed but contains diagnostic tools and  a back up of windows factory state.

After searching the internet for help on this problem, I decided to call Hitachi support. This is how I got my HD size limitation fixed. First off I am running windows xp home with sp2 installed. I don't know if this will work for earlier then sp2. It was actually alot easier then I thought it would be. First, go to start right click on my computer then select manage from the menu. This will now take you to computer management. Select disk management and you will see on the right two windows one that just shows your hard drives and cd/dvd roms and then below that a window that shows the info of each one. Here you should see a colored bars that show your partitions, you can also see your unused space, all you need to do is create a partition on the unused space and then now you should be able to have your full hard drive compacity. Also, if you have a slave hard drive you can just create a full partition using the full amount of disk space. If all you have is one hard drive and want a full partition I recommend creating a 25 gig partition for just windows, and miscilainous applications like word, and then partitioning the rest on the second partition, in my experience is increased my windows start up times and efficiency. I hope this helps all who are having the same problems as I was having.

...and be recognised to it's true capacity?

Windows XP (without SP2) only recognises drives up to around 127 gig.

If the drive is formatted thru Computer Management console (with SP2) and is then used to start the install of XP, the installation process doesn't recognise the large volume as being valid (it considers it corrupt/unrecognisable) and requires it to be formatted again (which will then reduce it to around 127gb).

I haven't actually tried partitioning the drive first but don't really want to and doubt it would matter in any case.

I want to use the hard drive, to it's full capacity of 300gb (279gb in reality), as the master boot drive.

Is this possible?

Answer:Can a hard drive larger than 127gb be used as the boot drive...

Hello and Welcome to TSF

No, it will not get the full 300gb, thats just the way it is. There is always so many gb that will not show.

Some Manufacturers say "Gigabyte" when they mean 1,000,000,000 (10^9) bytes. When your operating system says "Gigabytes" it means 1,073,741,824 (2^30) bytes. This means in your OS the drive appears smaller.

quite a simple problem you would think....i need both of the 250gig drives to be unpartitioned ( os on one drive). so its down to the 137gb problem. all of the solutions i have read so far is based on the sp1 and sp 2 route .I.e format the drive at 137gig then install windows xp pro and, then update with the pro pack and the drive should be showing at 250gb , im not having too much luck with this approach has anyone any other ideas ?

Hi guys, I want to connect my ps3 hard drive on pc to use it on pc, so when I get my new computer I can use it with it straight away, but right now I want to use it on my current pc, I plugged in both the one cable and the other one (sata), that goes from power supply cable to the HDD.

when I booted the pc it said installing device drive software, and said, device is ready to use, I go to my computer, and it ain't there, do I have to set it as secondary in bios?

Win7 Ultimate final rev

It's automatically set as fourth IDE master. restarted pc and still doesn't show up, I heard I need to format, is that true? like that to know if I should re-gain windows 7 disk

Answer:250gb hdd ps3 on pc?

Open up Disk Management (in the admin tools control panel), it should show up in there. I'd delete all the partitions and create 1 new one that incorporates the whole disk. Then format as NTFS.

I just bought a maxtor DiamondMax10 250GB HDD...
and i bought an external case so i can use it on my laptop(toshiba A-50)..

I have used a 400GB external Drive on the same laptop before..
I have also used 200GB external drive before on the same laptop..
all of my previous hdd were western digital....

The problem is:
I wanted to format (partition) the hdd... but the computer said that the capacity (unformatted) is around 2 TB
i tried to format it as one partition, it wont do it...
I tried to minimize the capacity to an acceptable (close to real) level (set it to 230Gb) but it wont do it...

I tried to format it using FAT32, and it worked but to a maximum of 200Gb, it is ok... but the problem is that i can only use 10 GB after that the harddrive gives an error (write-protected)...

1- have anyone used Maxtor drives before as externals???
2- Have any one came across this problem before ???
3- Will it work in a normal PC or not?? (just to format it)... because getting a pc in here is quite difficult

Thanks in advance....

I used the windows XP disk managment tool...
and i used also Partition Magic 8.0....
all with the same results...

Answer:250GB Hdd Not Recognized

What do you mean the laptop won't recognize the 250GB drive? Do you mean in the BIOS? When trying to install Windows? You can try to download a linux LiveCD like Knoppix or Damn Samll Linux and boot from that (F9 or F12 at the Dell BIOS) and see if it sees it. If so, format with QTParted or Fdisk and then try Windows again. Maybe the drive is bad.

Let me know if this helps.

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

Question: Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

I just bought a new deskstar 250Gb Hdd which I am trying to install in my Compaq Pressario S3190UK

I know its got to be set to slave but I wasnt sure if I should set it up as a
16 head, a 15 head , 32 byte clip or auto spin dissable and all of those choises are available on the drive

I went for 16 heads and booted up

In " my computer " the new drive does not appear ( I still see all my original drives there) yet in System/Hardware /device manager it shows up under drives and on clicking its properties it says this device is working properly

Without seeing it in the " my computer folder " I cant really format or partition it so I then tried partition magic
That saw it fine and reported its size correctly . I told it to create an ntfs partition and use all the drive . It changed color as it should and all that was left was to click on make changes now but when I did that it went straight back to tell me the new drive had no partitions created

I tried various combinations, of primary or logical drive , small or large partitions and fat or ntfs but always it refuses the last step of actually creating the partition .
What am I doing wrong ?

Answer:Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

First I will assume your drive is showing up as the full size in the bios and is corrrectly identified.

If you are using either xp or win2k. Go to disk management; start>run type in diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. See if your drive shows up there; it should be listed as disk1, disk0 will be the master drive. If it shows up there, you need to partition and format the drive. Right click on the drive and choose to create a partition; I like extended partitions for data / storage drives. After you create the partition, right click again and choose to create logical drive. You can make the entire drive one partition or organize it into say 3 logical drives; whatever you want. After you create the logical drive you will need to format them. Again right click on the logical drive and choose format. Use ntfs for your drive. In fact if you use partitions greater than 32 gig, fat32 is not even an option.

Just think about how you want it organized before you start.

Hello, I just ran out of room on my 500GB HDD, Its a 7200 RPM and I like the speed of it. I started looking for a new HDD when I came across an 60GB SSD. I never thought of buying an SSD before. Now I can't decide if I should get the SSD or the HDD ( same price) I need a new drive for linux, but my current drive only has 3GB left. I was going to partition 30GB to linux and keep 30 for Windows. Then transfer my OS to the remaining 30GB, that would free some room. I am a gamer so I need alot of room for games. If I get the 250GB HDD then I would have alot of room for more games and linux. But then I would not be able to boot Windows 7 in seconds. What should I get?

My specs:
Intel core i5 2500K ( stock speed )
MSI - H61M-P20(G3)
8GB of Vengeance DDR3 RAM @ 1333 CAS 7
GTX 550 Ti 1 GB ( Overclocked )
1 500GB 7200 Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD
500W PSU.

Answer:SSD 60GB or HDD 250GB?

Go with an SSD. If you choose the 60GB SSD, you will have just enough space for the OS and a Office Suite and a few other apps before you start to run out of space. If you can afford it, go with a minimum of 128GB SSD as your primary drive, then wipe your 500GB mechanical drive and use as a storage drive.

I have two 250GB hard drive in my pc and I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2. It's running on an Abit motherboard with Athlon 64 dual core 4400+ CPU. It said Trap followed by 0000005c ==============EXCEPTION=========================== and a series of hexdecimal messages afterworsd. I've done this twice and had the same problem and I just wanted to know if you guys knew anything about this?

Answer:Installing Win XP Pro SP2 on two 250GB HDD

Greetings gfx dude, Welcome to TSF!

Firstly, you only need to install the Operating System one ONE of the HDD's not both of them.
The second HDD can be connected as a "Slave" and can be used to 'save' everything that you download, plus emails and other data, such as music etc.
I suggest that you check the CD for scratches and marks; wipe it very gently from the centre to the edges with a lint free cloth.
To give you the best chance of getting Windows? installed without hassles, such as those you are experiencing, is to completely wipe the HDD with Darik's Boot N Nuke.
Wiping the HDD this way will completely erase everything off the HDD and take it back to a RAW unformatted state, as if it had just come out of the factory.

Just so that you do not forget anything when doing the installation, please read this...

The Windows? XP Installation Check List.

1. The Windows? XP SP2-CD (naturally)

2. Darik's Boot N Nuke (Click the coloured Link).

3. Please read this guide.

4. The Motherboard CD that contains all the necessary Drivers etc.

A couple of tips...
a. Darik's Boot N Nuke will take about 4? hours to completely wipe the Drive; however, this will vary depending on how big the Drive is. (That estimate is for a 80Gb HDD).

b. When you get to Figure 7 in 'The Guide', you can create more than one partition here by simply telling Windows? how big you want it. Should you do decide to create an extra parti... Read more

Any thoughts as to what I"m doing wrong here?

Answer:XP won't format whole 250GB HD

Hi, if the version of Windows on the install CD pre-dates Service Pack 2, you will get this problem.

Microsoft added the ability for Windows to see hard drives bigger than 137 GB in Service Pack 1 (and Service Pack 2).

If you have access to another PC, download Service Pack 2 (which includes Service Pack 1 btw), and integrate it into your install source and burn a new CD from which you can install. You can find good instructions for doing that here:

You can download Service Pack 2 (full 266 MB package) from here:

As a workaround, you can create a partition less than 137 GB, install Windows, and then install Service Pack 2 and you will be able to access the rest of the hard drive. Then you can partition the rest from the Computer Management interface (right-click "My Computer" > Manage...)

I have looked through previos questions but couldn't find a solution. I have a 250g USB driven HDD not recognised by ny PC. I used the HDD on my TV so I think it will probably need reformatting. When plugged in it appears in Disk Management but without a drive letter and when I right click on the drive most of the options, including allocate letter are greyed out. Any solutions?

Answer:USB 250GB HDD not recognised by PC

I would recommend PartedMagic, it is now paid for software, but at only $4.99 it is a sound investment. Download it, burn it to a cd or put it on a USB stick and boot from it.
Have the suspect drive connected and PartedMagic should be able to see it and it will enable you to format the drive, whatever the existing filesystem is.

Question: 250gb hd problem

Hitachi 250gb hd, was working fine, everything was ok. It was split into two partitions a 128Gb clip, and a 104 gb clip. The 128gb clip had information on it. Now the drive is recognized in bios properly. When it boots to windows it comes up as 8gb, and has information on it, but I can't access it. One more thing the drive now says fat, when originialy it was ntfs. Under manager, The drive says it is split at 138g and 104 gb. Any ideas? when I run a drive test the drive says it has a bad cable, I swapped the cable out three or four times, to no avail.

I think I have it all listed, oh windows xp home, installed on it's own drive.

Answer:250gb hd problem

Has nothing to do with drivers or Spyware, it is more of a Bios issue. What is the manufacturer and model of the computer that this drive is in? Also, do you have SP2 installed for XP?

I've been looking at some of the features in Samsung Magician, and ran the Benchmark test twice. Both times I got very high scores, above the max listed in the program for all 4 tests. I have the drive set to MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. Just wondering about the scores reliability.

Scores in Parentheses are Samsung 's listed maximum high:

Sequential Read
549 mb (540)
Seq write
532mb (520)
Random read
97442 (97000)
Random write
70189 (66000)

Answer:Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

I've recently reinstall a fresh copy of XP Pro, I got a Gigabyte 8inxp MB, a WD 250GB install on primary channel as Master, with 2 partition, 125GB each

I've also got a Maxtor 250GB connect to ATA133 card

Before, I got everything up and running , then I install Maxtor drive, card, and Maxblast 3

and I have drive C = 125GB, D = 125GB, and G = 250GB(this is the Maxtor)

then I do a boot-from-cd and install a fresh copy of XP Pro
now I cannot see my Maxtor

I tried to use my Maxblast3 software to mount the drive, but it say it only detect the Windows drive, therefore it won't let me run

When I tried to run Maxblast3 in DOS (from a floppy), I have to format and erase everything, I don't want to do that, I have some important documents on that drive that I do not want to lose

all drive were NTFS

Just purchased a new Samsung SP2514 250 gig hdd and XP can only see 32239mb.

Tried using samsung's drive overlay to install xp, but gave up + uninstalled it -(the drive overlay).

I booted from the Xp cd + installed but XP only sees 32....gig's.

I have enabled big LBA by using EnableBigLba from to no avail.

From searching through the forums, I see that a BIOS update may be necessary.

Do I also need to update my motherboard + chipset?

If so, are reliable updates available free on the net?

Any step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

My 30gb harddrive in my computer died a few weeks ago and a scoured the stores for a new hd. I found a Maxtor 250gb hard drive on sale at Fry's for $140. It was a great deal for the space but I have some questions on it's performance. It's P-ATA 133 with an 8mb cache,a seek time of 9.3ms and rotates at 7,200 RPM. I do a lot of multiasking with Everquest and just general gaming so my pagefile is huge and constantly used. I also do some video editing.

My real question is how does it rate for my needs. Should I look at buy another smaller hard drive to use as my main or keep use this as my only hard drive?

I have the hard drive split into two partitions right now and am wondering which partion actually is on the outside of the platters so I can properly put the pagefile in it's place? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I have the drive. Its currently the only drive, and I use a separate partition for the pagefile, but don't see (and didn't expect) a performance improvement. I have a rig with the swapfile on separate drives and it was noticably faster. So I would definately recommend a keeping the old drive - wherever you put the OS, keep the swapfile on the other one.

Would there be any conflict with this unit and W7.

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Answer:Seagate Replica 250gb with W7

If your only use is for disaster recovery, then this drive will do the job...That being said, I would recommend the purchase a large external drive that can also be used for storing individual files/folders...

Southbridge: Intel 82801BA (1CH2)
BIOS: American Megatrends, Inc.
Version: JA.01.07US
Graphic Interface Version: AGP version 2.0

(did I miss anything?)

I appologize in advance for the long read.

This computer came with only a 10GB Seagate drive. It has less than 300MB left of unused memory, so I tried installing a 250GB Maxtor. It is only recognized as 30GB in the BIOS. I don't understand this because I have WinXP SP2 and LBA is enabled in the BIOS -
Not only that, but I have another 300GB Seagate that I want to install as a slave (I had previously installed this one as a slave to the 10GB but had the same problem with only 64GB being recognized.
I don't understand why my BIOS isn't recognizing it at it's full capacity since I have the latest version of BIOS and LBA is indeed enabled (I thought SP2 was supposed to correct this problem).

My hope is that someone out there can walk me through this step by step (from erasing the disk to installation) because I've been working on this thing all day long and nothing I've tried seems to work. The 10GB drive has to go. I want to install the 250GB drive as my master, copy the 10GB drive to it (I have Casper XP 3.0 for this purpose), and then install the 300GB drive ... Read more

Answer:250gb HD only gets 233gb on Windows!

Upgrading Service Pack might help.

Also goto disk managment and see if theres any unallocated space.

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of this USB External hard drive? I think my Western Digital 'My Book' is going to pack up soon, so need to find a replacement. Yesterday i asked about a Buffalo drive and got some positive responses, but this one looks good too (and tiny in size). Thanks - Tony

Answer:Seagate 250gb FreeAgent Go/2.5

I use a Buffalo drive however, and it's extremely reliable - the only irritation is the incessant humming noise the drive motor makes.

I've got 2 250GB HDD's, I know FAT32 won't work on, but I really don't want to use NTFS. I run Windows and Linux, so having 500GB of HDD space that Linux finds hard to handle isn't really my best option.

Is there another file system or way around it that I can run on Linux and Windows without to much trouble?
