Preferred Solution: Keyboard characters don't type proper characters

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR363. Since last evening, I'm facing a problem with the four arrow keys. They type strange characters.

The up key ends up tying "oig". The down key ends up typing a backslash. RIght key types "LJH" and left key types ",mn". This is happening in all the applications - office, notepad, browser, etc. It's the same characters every time, not some random characters. For example, if I turn the Num Lock on, the "oig" becomes "65g".

All other keys are working absolutely fine. Only these four keys are an issue. These also work fine for 2-3 mins in between suddenly, and then go back to their erratic but predictable ways!!

I tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling, cleaning the keyboard (the keys are absolutely in shape visually). As a heavy user of Office, I am finding it impossible to handle this even for a day...

Please help with a solution/ suggestion....

Answer:Keyboard problem - arrow keys type junk characters

In our experience with the Vaio keyboards, you have reached the time when a replacment NEW keyboard is the best option.
Sometimes, turning the keyboard upside down and giving it a thorough cleaning with difluoroethane gas such as Dust Off (a lot of it) will take care of it... but not often.

For the past week or so, whenever I try typing in special characters (like , alt-0233; I'm on a laptop so it's actually alt-fn-mkll) weird things happen. For example, typing an "n" with a tilde in Firefox (alt-0241) brings me back a page. I think I activated some kind of shortcut that I really don't want to have. How do I fix this?

Hello!
In word documents apostrophe button is dead and works properly, but in web it is not dead and I can' t type latvian letters, such as āēļ?ņ (copied it from word document). When I write in internet I get 'a'e'l's'n.

I searched in internet for possible answers, nothing works. In browser settings everything seems to be ok - input language is set latvian.
If someone have any idea, will be glad to hear it.
Hope for help

Answer:Can' t type in browser latvian characters.

Hi, which browser are you using? And how are you trying to create these symbols?

If nothing works, or you want sthg that can be set up for your character set in any context, try AX (freeware):
AX - Instant, simple accents and special characters

It comes with a wide range of character sets for different languages and you can create your own.

Simply type a letter, then the key you've chosen to cycle through the set of symbols for that particular character.

With Microsoft Word, Wordpad and Notepad running in XP and Win7, you could type any unicode character by typing its number followed by Alt+X. For example, you could type ≠ by typing 2260AltX. This doesn't work in Wordpad or Notepad running in Win10; it seems to work in Word, but other codes don't work. Is there a way to type '≠' from the keyboard in Win10?

Answer:How to type unicode characters in Windows 10?

I haven't the right keyboard available on my laptop, so I can't test this, but the way we used to do it was:
Press and hold down the Alt key.Press the + (plus) key on the numeric keypad.Type the hexidecimal unicode value.Release the Alt key.
This comes from:

How to enter Unicode characters in Microsoft Windows

Which leads on to this small utility:

UnicodeInput - a utility to enter Unicode characters on Microsoft Windows

Which I also cannot test.

In Microsoft Word, there must be numerous published macros for handling Unicode - some will be better than others - just go to:

microsoft word unicode macro - Google Search

for loads of links.

I have two excel spreadsheet that I need to compare using vlookup, using case number to do so. The two sheets have case number stored differently, for example, one has the, displayed as 2012DT00001 or 2001CM00012 and the other sheet displays them as 2012DT1 or 2001CM12. Obviously, they are the same record but when using vlookup to compare the record and bring over information that is on one and not the other it does not work well. I have tried using vlookup to compare and look for approximate matches (TRUE). However, when I look at a sampling of the information it misses 80% of the records. At this point, I am thinking that the vlookup function is missing those records as a result of the two case numbers being different as a result of the unneeded zeros in the one. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How can i edit characters within a string of characters?

Here are two ways to do it:With your data in Column A:
A B
1) 2012DT00001 2012DT1
2) 2001CM00012 2001CM12
In cell B1 enter the formula: =LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5))Drag down as needed. You can now use Column B in your =VLOOKUP() something along the lines of:=VLOOKUP(B1,Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The second way is to use the formula directly in your =VLOOKUP() which eliminates the need for column BSomething like:=VLOOKUP(LEFT(A1,6)&VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)),Sheet2!A1:B2,2,1)The trick is in the: VALUE(RIGHT(A1,5)) section, it takes the last five characters of your text string, IE 00001 or 00012and converts them from TEXT to a NUMBER, and since Excel strips out any leading zeros in a number you end up with your required digit.See how that works for you.MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

Hello everyone

Can insert more than 255 character in Text field ? .

Answer:Can i enter more than 255 characters in (TEXT) type in M. Access?

Yes you can use more that 255 characters in a text file.

What version of Access are you using?. I am using Access 2013 & below is a copy from the help files that may help you. In older versions of Access you would use a Memo for long text, but Access 2013 now calls it Long Text.

The Memo data type is now called “Long Text”

In earlier versions of Access, we used the Memo data type to store large amounts of text, and the Text data type to store shorter strings (up to 255 characters). In Access 2013, these two data types have been renamed “Long Text” and “Short Text” respectively, and they have different properties and size limits depending on whether you’re using a desktop database or an Access App. Here are the details:

Text fields in desktop databases (.accdb)

Long Text In .accdb files, the Long Text field works the same as the Memo field of old. That is, it can store up to about a gigabyte of text, even though controls on forms and reports can only display the first 64,000 characters. You can set Long Text fields to display Rich Text, which includes formatting like bold and underline.

Short Text In .accdb files, the Short Text field works the same as the Text field in earlier versions. It stores up to 255 characters.

Dear Sir,

I am using Windows XP Home edition.

Whenever I tried to type in certain Chinese characters in any application like Notepad, Firefox, words, etc. The application will crash will error report telling "Modname: uniime.dll" is causing problem. The application where I type in the troubled word will close after the error prompt but the windows and other application remain intact.

The same problem occurs for several Traditional Chinese characters input method, for the same Chinese character.

I have been using the same system without the said problem for years and this problem occur after I tried to use a clean disk application and canceled the process in the middle (I know I am not wise there). I was told the uniime.dll is about the IME international input method, I wish it is only a corrupted dll causing the problem. How may I reinstall that particular module or should I do other stuffs to fix it?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. I bought this awesome, lovely and exquisite piece of technology innovation in August 2014.I have come to India and everyone loves it.Everything was fine until the last Saturday morning when I was typing an email. I got on a phone call for a while and it went in sleep mode. Pretty normal. I concluded the call and touched the space bar expecting the normal, quick wake up and the login screen. The login screen came up alright, but the password box was already filled. I tried to use backspace to clear the box and I missed a heartbeat! Nothing seemed to happen. So I force shut it holding the power button and after a minute bring it up again. Same scene! This has continued. I am going to be in India for a few months. Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Keyboard continuously floods characters in the keyboard buffer

I have this same problem but with my Y510p. It floods the 'Q' character.

The only solution which seems possible is a keyboard replacement (unless the connecting port is damaged, which is highly unlikely). I have ordered a keyboard and it is on the way.

As for your scenario, I would say that if you friend is going to be in US for more than 2 months then it is fine to send it with him for repairs. You could also order a keyboard online and replace it yourself (I ordered on ebay).
Check your manual on lenovo website for supported keyboard part number.

Tip -
To disable a malfunctioning keyboard like yours, you can either disconnect it physically (like you did)
OR
You can go into Control Panel > Device Manager > Keyboards
Select the laptop keyboard and manually install a wrong keyboard driver.
This way the keyboard wont be recognized and wont work.

Hi, this is my first post to this forum. I am The Excel Addict. I have a website http://www.TheExcelAddict.com where I share tips and tricks for using Microsoft Excel. But sometimes, outside of Excel I need to go looking for HELP.For the past couple of months my computer has been acting strange. When I am typing away, it can happen in any program (Outlook, Excel, Word, TextPad, etc...), everything is working fine, but then my keyboard starts producing odd characters. For example, when I try to type a " (double quote), I get a blank, when I type a greater than sign (>) I get an apostrophe (') and most other non-alphanumeric characters result in the same behavior. If I close the program and reopen it, everything works OK for a while (maybe 10-15 minutes) and then the strange characters start appearing again when I type. I restart the program, and everything will work fine for another little while. It is very difficult to get anything done on my computer that requires typing. Updating my website is a nightmare. So far I've resisted smashing my computer to bits. Has any one else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?I am using WinXP Professional and have McAffe antivirus running. The Excel Addict

Whenever I type certain characters another character will pop up with it. For example, I try to type "L" and when I'm not using the onscreen keyboard it types as ";L". There are several different keys this is happening to but it is not happening with every key. This just started about 30 minutes ago. I cleaned my keyboard and it started malfunctioning about 10 minutes after Happens to thw following characters I've found l =;lp=poo=poa= select all and several more

I have used the keyboard with a laptop and tried a different keyboard with the desktop. the problem is only evident on the desktop regardless of us keyboard (i am using the onscreen keyboard to type this).

The USB board will work for a while and then start missing characters, typically vowels (!). I have checked the ease of access options and everything is turned off including filter keys.

It is particularly bad at the moment, but might work for days at a time.

Hi - I'm using Vista Business.

When using an office program, certain characters do not show up correctly. For instance the '@' symbol (shift+2) shows up as quotes.

Here's the strange part. I can type normally in notepad. This suggests that there's a setting in Office??

In either case, I tried changing Vista's language settings by right clicking the taskbar -> toolbars but the 'languages' toolbar does not appear. In other words, i don't have any other languages installed.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Answer:Wrong Keyboard Characters

Shift+2 for quotes is UK (maybe others)

I have just had a look in Excel and you can change the language for office (excel in this case)

Excel options --> Popular Tab --> Language settings --> Primary editing Language

Hi guys and galsMy keyboard has decided to play silly buggers. The ampersand and quote marks have swapped places, the pound sign has completely disappeared and comes out as a hash sign and the hashsign comes out as a long vertical line. There are other changes as well although no letters are effected.I have checked my keyboard settings and they appear to be correct as I am using a windows 101 keyboard set to american english.I don't suspect the keyboard itself as a spare one behaves exactly the same.grateful for any advice Pootie

If its a desktop, then simply replace the keyboard. You can get keyboards from most online retailers nowadays, and some are very cheap!!

Answer:Special keyboard characters

You have to use the number pad. On your laptop you may have a NumLock key which will activate the numbered keypad - for example on mine with NumLock on J=1, K=2, L=3 (the numbers should be marked on the keys).

Can anyone recommend a PS2 wired multimedia keyboard where the characters have not woen off or gone dull.I`m using a Genius slimstar at the moment but the characters are wearing off and it`s less than a year old.On previous keyboard the letters faded.I don`t mind spending a bit more if I know it will last longer.

Answer:Keyboard characters worn

I think most Genius' stuff is aimed at the budget end of the market. Stick to a known good make that do better keyboards & you should be OK. I would buy either Logitech / Microsoft, but not from their budget range. Perhaps 15 or over for Logitech click here / And 20 or over for Microsoft click here. Compare prices with other places, & try to read as many reviews before purchasing. I prefer wired keyboards as the signal rarely/never fails.I have an 8-year old Logitech Internet Navigator wired keyboard (click here) where none of the characters are beginning to wear off, or even getting dull. I purchased it secondhand(!) at the time, & it has had several hours of daily use, including playing games for at least 20% of that time. The trouble is they are not available to buy atm. G

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

A closed friend of mine brought a Win8 laptop (Acer) last week. She ran into 2 problems which I have some problems helping her to resolve.

1/ The laptop (Win8) was setup using her Microsoft account which used her email account... She has an existing skype account using her gmail address. When she tried to access skype on the new computer, preinstall skype wants her to merge the existing skype (with gmail) account with her Microsoft account (which uses her ISP email address). She does not want to do that and wants her existing gmail skype account. Is the only way out is to uninstall the preinstalled skype in the new laptop and reinstall skype again? This way, she can use the existing skype account associated with her gmail.

2/ On the new laptop, the special characters like ~, !, @, #. $. %. ^ (i.e. those keys with dual characters) are stuck at some strange characters which she cannot get out of. These keys when strike display those funny European characters. (My friend is in Canada and when she setup her laptop, she chose English Canada). Is the keyboard defective or the language chosen during setup was incorrect? Note, when I remote in, the control panel clearly stated the language used is English Canada.

Thanks in advance.

My girlfriend has a keyboard by eMachines whose top row begins with 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. Recently, when she types a "1" it outputs as /, a "2" will give her 1, a "3" will giver her 2, a "4" will give her 3, etc. None of the other rows of keys on the keyboard have this problem.

Let me just begin by saying that I have already tried going into "Regional Settings, etc." but simply can not find the right layout to match my girlfriend's keyboard. All of the layouts I have tried have the number "1" as the second key on the top row, and not the first.

I bought an M60 for my wife and she has complained that it is constantly skipping characters. I have found the same problem. E.g. typing URLs into internet explorer or composing emails, it will miss characters 10% of the time. I've seen a couple of posting about this in the forums.

Good old Dixons are refusing to refund the purchases as someone called me today to say that she can't see any problem with the keyboard.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Answer:Keyboard issue on M60 (skipping characters)

Everyone who owns a M60 is suffering from this problem. The product should be recalled and this problem should be fixed. I don't think its a firmware issue as external keyboards work fine. Take it back to Dixons, get them to show you another one and make sure they type sentences and not just random keys. Also get them to compare to another notebook.

Answer:[SOLVED] keyboard wrong characters

Either you are in a Non-US English location and have the US layout, or vice-versa
US Shift+2 is @
UK Shift+2 is "

Control Panel | Language and Regional Options
On Regional tab, select the correct language for your location.
Click the Languages tab, then click the Details... button
Select the correct Default input language. This should also install the correct keyboard
Under Installed services, if the incorrect keyboard is shown, click the Add... button
Select the language and layout, and click OK
You can remove the other keyboard if needed. Helps to keep it from getting switched back accidentally.

Firstly can I apologise if this thread is in the wrong place. The problem I am having is driving me mad, and while I don't think it's a hardware issue, I had no idea where else on this site to post.

Now to business...

My PC seems to be typing random numbers whenever any text box is selected in any program or website. Please note it is a PC, not a Laptop. All the solutions I have found so far relate to the touch pad on Laptops but that can't be the issue here.

When I unplug the keyboard the PC continues to type random numbers. On restarting the PC the problem goes away for a while, but soon raises it's ugly head again. Sometimes the issue gets even more bizarre and extreme whereby pressing keys on the keyboard will launch programs. For instance, the other day I pressed "S" and the PC loaded Windows Media Player!

I have searched and searched for answers, trying everything I can think of, but the results from Google tend to be unhelpful when you type in things like "Help, my keyboard's gone loopy" or "keyboard random characters". Incidentally, it's favourite character to type is the number "8".

The closest thing I came to a solution was someone suggesting that somewhere deep within the PC virtual keys are getting stuck...the PC thinks I'm holding down the "8" key for example. Sadly I couldn't verify this and have no idea how to solve it!

It almost sounds like your Accessibility onscreen keyboard has been messed with. Or specfic hotkeys have been allocated to do something and have gone awry. It's an issue within the PC and you might have to suggest a repair to the particular system to right the problem. Jazz

Hello everyone, How can I insert alt+ characters on T430 keyboard? For example, if I wanted to insert en dash on my regular desktop keyboard, I would press alt+0150 (on numeric keyboard). However, I cannot find the right combo on my thinkpad keyboard. Thanks for your help, Srdjan

Answer:Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

In order to execute those ASCII/ANSI codes, you must have NumLock on.  The involves the Fn (blue) key.  With it on, you then use alt  = the small numbers located on the lower right coner of keys to the right of the Trackpoint head.  This is not easy.  I prefer to run charmap.exe, minimize it to the task bar, and copy/paste the characters I need. I don't know if the old standard way (Num Lock On, ALT+nnn) would work with an external full keyboard.

My keyboard is typing correctly in Word but types nonsense when I type in either a browser window or in my email. If I type a web address in Chrome, Explorer or Firefox it comes out as random letters, symbols and numbers and the same if I try to type an email in yahoo or gmail. As I say, it is fine typing in Word. Any ideas gratefully received.

PS I have been into Control Panel and made sure regional settings and keyboard setting are for English (UK)
