Need help with getting 250gb hard drive in external case to work.

Question: Need help with getting 250gb hard drive in external case to work.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? I have a Dell Inspirion 1100 with a celeron processor, purchased 1.5 years ago. I have tried the case on other computers that were better than mine, I have tried the hard drive straight into a computer and it works fine. I have the jump set to cable mode... what could it be???

Preferred Solution: Need help with getting 250gb hard drive in external case to work.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think this must be fairly new but I cannot find any info or specification on HP website or with a search on Google. I particularly want to know if its file system is NTFS or FAT32 as my PC is Widows XP with NTFS. Maplin are the only people I have seen who have it on the shelf -not even Amazon have it as they still push the ?previous? 250GB model from HP.

Good Morning:I have Xp on one drive (120Gb) and Vista on another drive (200Gb) although I could move that one to another 120Gb drive.I also have a 250Gb Western Digital USB2 external drive which I would like to partition to make it a back-up for the two operating systems. Can anyone point me to an easy (and cheap) program to do that. And, will it be a problem to copy across since the 200Gb only contains about 110Gb currently? Thanks in advance!

There is in regards to my SimpleTech portable hard drive and My new Dell Inspiron N7010 17R which has windows 7. It tells me that it can not recognize the device when I plug it into my USB port. It works great in my Dell Inspiron that has windows XP and my Lenovo at work that also runs windows XP. I have tried another laptop at my place of employment that has windows 7 on it and I get the same error message on that machine also. It has to be a conflict with the SimpleTech 250gb and Windows 7.

Hi I'm Mark. I'm having a problem when it comes with my notebook [dell inspiron 600m] and my external hard disk [WD Elements 250gb]. when I connected the 5 pin cable of the external hard disk to the usb port of the notebook, the connection is seem to unstable or on-and-off, therefore making file copying impossible. The external hard drive and the notebook is in good condition, although I can't really figure out what seems to be the problem. I am also having a theory that this might be a power supply problem. I would be very grateful to someone who can help me about this matter..

Does anyone know how many milliamps this device draws?

The "Technical Specification" provides plenty of info but does not specify the actual current. All it says is that it is powered directly from the USB port. But I need to know exactly what the peak ma of this device is.

I'm looking at a hard drive on e-bay, "SpinPoint P Series, 160GB 7200RPM 8MB CACHE" that comes installed in a Gemini Coolmax case.

I have read that there's a lot of difference in the quality of such cases. Can anyone tell me if this would be satisfactory? I'm on my computer about ten hours a day, and I'll use this for my primary data file storage, and to store images from my digital camera. I plan to use my internal hard drive primarily for the OS, applications, and temporary backups so when it crashes I won't have to worry about backups for the last day or so.

Hi.

What is better to get for an external hard drive: a 3.5" case or a 5.25" case which may include a fan in the back? The reason I ask is that I am looking at the two cases below:

Thanks.

I read an old post that said you can get a case for a hard drive (from a desktop, not laptop) and be able to access files (but not software) and a link to Newegg.com was included. I went to that site and am not sure how to choose the right one - do I need an AC adapter? And how do I know which internal interface I need?

The hard drive is in an emachines T3828 and is 80 GB, if that helps. My daughter had stories she had written stored on it - getting them off and ditching the rest is the goal. (The power switch seems to have died)

Thanks!

a) the external hard-drive CASE recognize the HDD as 300GB and function normally?
or-
b) the external hard-drive CASE not recognise the HDD at all due to it being too big.

I use an WD external hard drive (1TB) for additional storage and it was working fine with no issues. The small USB connector broke off the board yesterday and I purchased a new enclosure and installed it. Now my computer does not recognize it as a storage device. I have all the data still on the HD and really do not want to loose it. Any advice on how to get the computer to recognize the external hard drive?

I tried adding a letter for the drive, but it does not show up to change the letter of the drive.

The PC is an HP that is about 4 months old. Windows 7, 64 bit.

Thanks for the assistance.

Answer:Existing external hard drive installed in new case, does not recognize

if the Hard drive is a SATA varient and not a IDE (which unless its ollld it wont be)

then you can simply open up your new pc case, and connect the drive directly to your motherboard using a SATA lead, and a serial power connection from your power supply.

If you dont have a spare SATA cable, then for now you can just use the power cable and lead from your DVD drive. This will allow you to back up your data for now, and will determine if the drive still works or not.

I have a smaller netbook - and was hoping that I would be able to recover the date from my HP Comqaq by removing the hard drive and using an external case and recycle the hard-drive.
I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what would be a suitable external case to allow me to create a compact USB hard drive.

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 250GB drive for a friend a few days ago. I was able to get it connected to a machine running Windows XP SP2 just fine and I could see the drive ok. I noticed about 18GB or so was "used" even though there was only one 73MB PDF file visible when I viewed the drive contents. The drive has 232GB of free space, I believe.

I understand not all 250GB will be available for user data but is it reasonable for 18GB to be consumed by filesystem info?

Hello again,

Now let's say i buy a SATA hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure, can the hard drive still be detected on any pc? (ie: a pc based on PATA technology that uses IDE hard drives, mac, P3's, P4's, etc). Meaning will it work if I take it and use it on someone elses pc? I currently still have a Pentium 3 1.4Ghz pc that uses IDE hard drives. The reason I thought of getting a SATA hard drive with an enclosure (not even sure which one to look for), is because I've heard SATA drives are faster, and there a lot cheaper too. Older IDE drives cost a bit more now just becausing they're fading away. I want something like a 400GB drive to be able to take on the go as I work with a lot of files when I am out and I'm sick of carrying cdr's, dvd's, or emailing files to myself.

My friend said this:
If there is a sata usb enclosure than yes it will work on any pc. Because its going to the usb, but if your usb is usb 1 then there is no point in grabbing a sata unless your getting a deal on it.

Hmmm I don't really understand his answer. I just want a drive and an enclosure so I can take this thing everywhere I go, have it work on any pc, and than take it home and have it work here. A friend of mine has one where he just plugs it to the pc by usb and the pc recognizes it right away and it shows up on the screen. I assume thats plug and play technology but I dunno if all come with them. I want one so bad!

Answer:Can Any Hard Drive & External Enclosure Work On Any Pc?

Hi. I think that you may have been asking one question, and your friend was answering another. I believe a SATA drive is considerably faster than an ide drive. I think what he was trying to get at is that the USB 1.1 interface is pretty slow, and the SATA drive would have to wait on the USB 1.1 interface to transfer data. The enclosure manufacturer should state exactly what you need to know, in terms of what enclosure to go with which type of hard drive, and MAC/PC compatibility. Good night and good luck.

At first I thought the problem was with my Siig KVM switch, that allows me to share my mouse and keyboard with two different computers. Essentially, after the upgrade, every time I would click over to my Windows 8.1 machine on the KVM, I would then have to wait like 20 seconds for the new hardware tone to chime before I could use my mouse/keyboard. This was frustrating, as I tend to switch back and forth between these computers numerous times a day. I would also hear what I thought was my external hard drives powering on every time I would switch to the computer.

Then one day recently, I decided to take one of my external hard drives with me somewhere, and for a while I did not plug it back into the PC. Walla, my problem went away! The issue has something to do with this Toshiba DWC130 3TB external drive. When it is not plugged into my computer, I can switch back and forth between the two computers with zero delay. Starting with 8.1, when this Toshiba drive is connected to my machine, and I switch to it on the KVM, I have to wait for the drive to power up from sleep before I the mouse will take and I can start using the computer. I am hoping there is some sort of work around for this. I am contemplating taking the drive out of it's external enclosure and seating it inside the computer, as this has gotten to be quite frustrating.

Any help appreciated!

Answer:USB Mouse on KVM won't work until External hard drive..?

Some external drives have bundled software(or sometimes you can download from the driver maker's site if they don't give you the software in the package) that can set the drive to stay spinning rather than spinning down after an activity time-out.

I wrote a small hack to keep drives from spinning down. I call it DriveAlive. You may download from this page:
Miles Ahead Software

I bought a Seagate external USB 2.0 drive that didn't come with any software. Turned out another more expensive Seagate external had a bundled software package I could download. The utility to control if the drive would spin down due to time-out worked on my drive. So if your external doesn't have any software see if there's a higher priced version. If it's essentially the same drive inside then the software may work on the economy model.

I bought an external HD enclosure thinking I could put a spare 2.5" Hitachi DK23AA drive into it and have a handy 12 GB USB doodad to play with. I have the jumper placed correctly (according to Hitachi) to make it a slave and I can even see it in the device manager but not in "My Computer"...there is no drive assignment being made.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any ideas?

Answer:Trying to make an external hard drive work (USB)

If the device manager can see it, go into the Disk Manager (Computer Management, depending upon OS) and see if the drive is there (it probably won't have a drive letter assigned to it). If it is, right-click on the device and assign an unused drive letter to it. Should work from there... Can't give exact instructions without knowing which OS you're running.

Not long ago, I bought a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB external hard drive. It was working just fine until I accidently knocked it over. When it fell it bumped the leg of a table pretty hard. Immediately after that, I started getting popup balloons on the taskbar saying 'write error' or something similar. Then I tried to doubleclick on the drive in My Computer and it froze up. So then I unplugged and replugged and it said 'USB Device Not Recognized.' Those error messagesn were the last I heard from it. Then I restarted, and after that, the drive would not display in My Computer at all, would not even react to the computer at all. I tried it on two computers. Still, nothing. I noticed a strange sound coming from the hard drive. It's a sort of melodic buzzing with a beeping sound every few seconds. Sometimes it goes completely silent. So what I need to know is:

- What can I do, can I fix it myself?
- If not, how much can I expect to pay to get my data recovered? At the very least, I need a listing of the files that were on the hard drive, just so I know exactly what I'm missing. I might be able to replace them myself if I know exactly everything that's on it.
- Is the hard drive fixable? If not, will the warranty cover replacement?
- Also, I called around a few places and the most reasonable one said it would cost around $100 to fix it. Is this worth it?

Thanks in advance.

Allright, here's the problem.I installed my external hard drive in the proper port, and it started to work, but then my desktop icons dissapeared. Was able after a lot of work to get everything back, then dissconected external hard drive and restarted my computer. When I did I got a message that reads something about files waiting to be burned onto a disk. Can you help?

Answer:Why wont my external hard drive work with my

Burning to disk means the CD/DVD burner not the external hard dive. Not really a big deal. At some point you can find the files (links to files) under the cd/dvd drive and simply delete them. All that has nothing to do with the external hard drive.I don't get the proper port deal? Any old usb slot ought to work.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

My motherboard is ASRock m3a770de. I built my machine 3 days ago. I have one Hiatchi 500gb internal HD, and one 1TB external HD.

I am running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition.

After building my computer three days ago, I installed windows, and my external was not being detected through eSATA in the BIOS or in Windows "Probably need to install drivers" I said.

So I put in the CD that came with my motherboard, and installed the AMD All in One Driver that was on it. Restarted, and hey, my external was showing up.

Today, after installing SP1 (not sure if thats what did it), my ext hd was no longer showing up again. I reinstalled the driver on that CD. Now, I'm not sure if it even installed the first time, because it said it was currently uninstalled through the ATI catalyst installation program. But it didn't work this time. I'm not sure what got it to work the first time. But my eSATA drive was being read in IDE mode for three days. When trying to get it work the first time, I did plug it in via USB to see if it would work, maybe that had something to do with it working the first time?

Anyway, I changed my registry to start up in AHCI mode, and then went into my bios and changed my storage config to AHCI. Upon booting, windows would not load with my external HD turned on (anybody know why?), but loaded once I turned it off. Windows then installed AHCI drivers, and upon restarting, both hard drive, external and internal, were being detected as removal ... Read more

Hello,

I feel like such an idiot, because I used to work and be very good at Tech support. Windows Vista (and a failed attempt on both XP and OSX) have driven me here.
I used to have a Compaq nx9010 laptop that crapped out on me. I took the hard drive out, as it didn't fail with the rest of the computer. I just ordered a hard drive enclosure and got it in the mail. Everything seems to be working fine, drivers installed and are working correctly.

The hard drive has a bunch of files on it and a copy of Windows XP with SP2. I just want to get the files off the hard drive, and have tried this on my laptop (which is running Vista), my main PC (which is running Mac OSX) and on my boyfriends PC (which is running Windows XP).

On both XP and Vista, the device get immediately recognised. Vista installed the drivers and sees the hard drive as a portable device in the device manager. XP doesn't get quite that far with it...

Anyways, I want to do this on Vista. So, when I go to try and locate it on my computer, the ONLY places it even comes up are in the device manager and in the safely remove hardware wizard. So it sees it, it knows it is there, but I cannot access it. At all. I've tried everything that I can think to get this to work, including going into the BIOS and changing the boot order and enabling windows to boot from a USB hard drive. But still, nothing.

Has anyone else run into anything like this? Any suggestions or knowledge about how to get it to work? T... Read more

I'm unable to connect my WD USB 3.0 external drive (with a USB 3.0 cable) to my USB 3.0 slots on my computer. All my drivers seem up to date. The drive works connected to the USB 2.0 slot on my system.

I tried a different WD USB 3.0 external drive to my computer to see if it was my computer or the drive itself, and this other WD drive worked fine. I even tried the cable from the other drive to rule out of it's a faulty cable, and the cable is fine.

So what I've gathered is that the drive won't connect to the USB 3.0 slot for some reason. I'm thinking it's either that there is something wrong with the external drive itself, or there is some sort of setting which is interfering with the connectivity. Although I'm guessing it's the former, since the other external drive connected just fine?

Any ideas?

Greetings:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with a Vista Home Basic Operating System. The laptop works great and I have no problems surfing the web with it while on a wireless network. However, I have an external hard drive (1 Terabyte) plugged into my laptop, USB powered. This external hard disk is increasingly giving me problems. Every time, I visit the folders on this external hard disk, everything on my laptop freezes even my downloads. I am forced to wait until my OS catches up with my commands and carries them out. I start getting responses like "Expansion Drive F: (my external hard drive) (not responding)" and "Mozilla Firefox (not responding). Even a MSWord document I am working on will be become "frozen" during this time. This OS "freeze-up" is very frustrating. Can I do anything to rectify this situation? Some factors have been wondering about are the following:
a) In terms of memory, the external hard disk has far more than my laptop. Could this be the source of the stoppages?
b) When I visit my external hard drive, files are being actively being downloaded to it. Could this be the source of the stoppages?
In the past, I have used this same external hard drive attached to a desktop with XP (SP3) and didn't have any problems what-so-ever with the OS or the hard drive. Any advice given is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Why doesn't my laptop OS work with my external hard drive?

Most commonly, USB external drives over 500GB are not USB powered, but have their own external power supply. It may be that your Laptop's USB port is unable to deliver the power required to run the drive. Does it have the option of plugging in its own power supply?

Hi, what is the Model number of your drive? I assume it is a USB drive - is your computer USB2 compatible, because I suspect the drive is USB2, which I don't think is backward compatible to USB1.To find out if your pc is USB2 compatible ... Right-click on My Computer and then Left-click on Properties, then on Hardware then on Device Manager, then Left-click on the + beside Universal Serial Bus controllers - if you then see the word Enhanced anywhere within that section, then your PC is USB2 compatible. You can then just close all the small windows that you just opened. That will give us somewhere to start, to try to help you.

I have a 250G Maxtor external hard-drive which I took from the shelf and plugged in last night for the first time in several months. At first I noticed the light blinking erratically and also heard a constant clicking sound, the same sound over and over. I disconnected and then reconnected it, and this time the unit worked okay. I was able to access the contents. Later I disconnected and reconnected it several more times, only to find that it no longer works. All I get now is the unending clicking sound.

As far as I know it has been setting on my shelf for three months or so. To my knowledge it hasn't been moved, much less dropped. Assuming that it is irretrievably broken, are all external hard-drives this fragile? I thought I had been storing my stuff relatively safely -- as long as I didn't drop the unit. Maybe I was wrong. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

I'm not looking for help at this point, just wondered if anyone happens to know if it's possible. If not, it's for my upcoming recycling trip (if I can't give it away).
It's a Western Digital Essential External USB hard drive, model no. (WD?)4305A (160GB). The system requirements say 98SE/ME/2000/XP. I bought it 6-7 years ago for my 99SE computer, but soon had to give in and replace the computer (by which time the only choice was Vista). The drive's still in its box (I'm trying to find out the lazy way, before embarking on the usual hours of fiddling about!).
It's in the 'legacy drive' section of Western Digital's website, but no relevant downloads. After lots of searching, I'm still confused about whether to look for a driver written by WD for Vista or the other way round, or if it's just plug-and-play and needs no additional driver, or if it's an expensive paperweight. (I have no experience of adding drives to go on).

Answer:Is my 'legacy' external hard drive able work with Vista?

I wonder why the site thinks this is spam?

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.
My System:

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

Answer:Resizing Hard-drive To Clone To 250gb Ssd

So I found https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/ht077144. Towards the end of the page is this image;

Which is 2 partitions short of the Lenovo in #1. The 2 missing 1. Lenovo D: drive NTFS partition and 2. 1000MB partition.
Maybe I should keep them all...

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

Answer:250GB Hard Drive detected as 130GB?

What kind of hard drives are these? There might be a Bios limitation you need to overcome.

I bought a Seagate hybrid hard drive listed at 250GB. when I look at the disk using Acronis disk Director it show the disk size as 110GB. I know the actual size is usually smaller than the listed size but more than 50% smaller? Seems bogus to me.

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You need to go to right click on My Computer and choose 'Manage' then Disk management. You will see the drive in the list. Right click on the left hand box and choose 'initialize'. When this is done right click on the right hand side and choose 'New partition'. When you have done this right click again and choose 'Format'

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Tried it on two different computers, its a 300 GB iMicro External HDD, have not tried a different USB cord, could it be the problem? Had it around 2 months now, first problem with it, thanks.

Answer:External hard drive spins, light turns on, but does not work.

I would try a different sata cable as you mentioned.

Hearing any abnormal sounds from it?

Can you hear if it is spinning at all?

2 months it will still be under warranty.

The portable hard drive works on my XP, Vista, 7, and 8. When I try to access it all I get is working on it. It did open once but wouldn't open all my files. There is still over 290 GB of space avalible.

Answer:Why does my Iomega HDD 320GB external hard drive not work on my windows 10?

Could be lots of things. What format is the drive in (FAT32, NTFS, other etc). If you are able to connect to an OS on an older OS, it may well be worth backing them up on that, then format on the Win10 PC then look at copying the files back. Sounds drastic, but that's something I would consider.

(I added a new external hard drive about 2 months ago and connected it to my pc.) Today after having attempted to add a router, I had modem problems, so I tried to do a restore and the error message tells me it is unsuccessful. I tried unplugging the external hard drive and it won't restore that way either.
