want to partition my hard disk and make it my system hard disk

Question: want to partition my hard disk and make it my system hard disk

I attached this old hard disk of mine. It is a 20 gig hard disk ATA 100
I was thinking of partitioning in the following way.
4 gigs for Windows XP
4 gigs for Windows 2000(do i really need Windows 2000 and Windows XP on the same machine)
4 gigs for LInux
8 gigs for miscellaneous.

I have currently got a 160 gig hard drive with Windows XP, i will make it my apps/data drive, just in case something goes wrong with the 20 gig drive, i will still be able to boot using my apps drive.

If i make the second drive my apps drive, do i need to have it in Slave mode, my motherboard has four IDE connections.

Preferred Solution: want to partition my hard disk and make it my system hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: want to partition my hard disk and make it my system hard disk

Wait.... if you had the 160 as the drive with applications on it? Yes, it would be slave (jumpered) if you plan on booting from the 20GB.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I would like to make use of the "Lenovo Recovery" partition on my hard disk for storage; it is about 10gb and now not needed. However the Win7 OS does not seem to want to allow me to delete the contents or reformat it.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can do this? BackgroundI  have two drives, one for boot and apps (solid state) and the second regular HDD just for data. I took a hard disk from my old Thinkpad T520 (which died) and put it into a drive bay adaptor in a new T520 system.  All works fine.  As the second hard disk is now just there for data and the main (solid state drive) has a new Lenovo recover partition, I do not need to keep the old Lenovo recovery partition on the second drive and would like to make use of the storage capacity.

Answer:Make use of the "Lenovo Recovery" partition on my hard disk for storage?

Double-click on the partition in My Computer, and you should get the option to Recover Drive Space... but before you zap the recovery partition, make sure you have a backup image of the disk, or have made or obtained a recovery disk set.

Hope this helps!

I have provided Disk information in the attachment.

Disk 0 - Partition C (System) and Partiton E (Data)
Disk 1 - Partiton D(Win7 OS) and Partiton F(WinXP)

To boot I need Disk 0 as it has the system partiton, which got messed up during installation of WinXP and it didn't change when I installed Win7 in my current dual boot System. It is working fine today as long as I connceted the Disk0. If I remove Disk0 and set the boot order to Disk1 I am getting the ntldr missing error and the system refuses to boot.

I need help in moving the System parttion to one of the existing OS partition or to a new partition in Disk1 so that I can get rid of the old Disk0 completely without disturbing my current dual boot system.

I am not able to find any straight forward safe solution to move the system partition. As it contains the boot information of both XP and Win7. Any help will be highly appreciated to do so without installing any of the existing OS. Thank you

Answer:Need help in moving the System partition to a different Hard disk

In what OS were you booted when making the screenshot? Win7 is letter D and XP is letter F.... the current OS is always C if you do a clean install from CD/DVD.

Boot to win7 please. In Elevated Command Prompt do:

Code:
bcdedit /enum all>c:\bcd.txt
Post c:\bcd.txt afterwards as attachment

I'm setting up a Toshiba Encore 2 Tablet for a family member. I've already updated it to run 32-bit Windows 10 Pro 1607. It came with a very small amount of internal EMCC storage (24 GB available, NTFS formatted), but fortunately it also includes a MicroSD slot, which I've populated as a 128 GB NTFS drive. I've successfully installed and run many applications to/from this MicroSD disk ("D:\").

But this disk apparently is seen by Windows as a removable drive and so it does NOT include a Recycle Bin and Windows refuses to list this disk as available to store Restore Points, both of which I want to enable. How can I accomplish this? Am I correct in suspecting that if I can somehow force Windows to see the D:\ drive as a non-removable hard drive, it will automatically setup or enable a Recycle Bin and also allow me to turn on System Protection for the drive? If not, how can I do what I want?

Thanks!

I am using lenovo laptop from last december and I am unhappy with first day from using it. the hard disk is running super slow.  So After a lot of research and checking I remove the System interface software and my computer perform normal. My 35K Asus laptop perform faster than 45K Lenovo laptop. (Even lenovo laptop is 7th gen and Asus is 6th gen). Today I installed it back System interface and now when I backup (one key recovery). 9 hours is gone and the software say 6 more hours to complete the backup. Now if I remove it, it take only 1 hours 30 minutes to finish the backup. so it's performing 10% of what it perform without having system interface. Can someone from lenovo explain why they make garbage things like this. When I read about bluefish and now this thing happening blow my mind.

Answer:hard disk boot failure insert system disk press enter

Repair MBR:

Boot From the Windows Install Disc
The first thing you?ll need to do is boot off the install disc, and then click through until you see the ?Repair your computer? link in the lower left-hand corner.
You?ll need to choose the correct installation of Windows and then click the Next button.
And then you?ll get to the System Recovery Options screen, where you can get to the Command Prompt.

Repairing the Master Boot Record:

If you want to restore the master boot record, you can simply type in the following command:

bootrec /fixmbr

You can also write a new boot sector onto the system partition with this command (which is often more useful):

bootrec /fixboot

And of course, if you just use bootrec /? you?ll be able to see all the options.

I've got a problem with my brothers laptop.

It is an old AMS Power CD, with win. 95. When I turn it on, it begins to boot. The screen reads:

System BIOS Shadowed
Video BIOS Shadowed
Mouse Initialized

Then in a red flashing box in the middle of the screen it reads: "Couldn't reset hard disk system Save to Disk feature is disabled"

Then, "Operating system not found" below

I would much appreciate any help or assistance I can find.

Hey Guys,

Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance

My Situation

In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J

At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.

It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slowI need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 ... Hi, please can you help?

I have a 250Gb Seagate Barracuda ATA internal hard drive which is mounted in a Safecom usb/firewire external caddy. It has 2 partitions; a 15Gb FAT32 drive and the rest divided into 2 logical NTFS drives of 160Gb and 60Gb.

I have only had the disk a couple of months. Shortly after I purchased the disk I had a power failure whilst scan disk was running on one of the NTFS drives. Upon reboot XP did not recognise the NTFS drives reporting that the file system was corrupt, the FAT32 drive was fine and accessible.

I managed to recover all my files (mostly mp3s and movie files) from both NTFS drives using GetDataBack, reformatted the disk, replaced the partitions for good measure and reinstalled my backup.

Since then I haven't really had cause to use the disk so it has remained switched off but today I needed to transfer some files across for backup purposes. Having done this I then did a bit of housekeeping; deleted a few files and moved a few folders around on the disk. Then explorer crashed and after I managed to recover from the explorer crash I found that the NTFS partitions were once again inaccessible in XP. XP reporting that the file system is corrupt once again. Once again the FAT32 drive is accessible.

I am currently running GetDataBack again, and it looks likely that it might find all the files again (I hope). I originally purchased the disk to backup my main hard drive which I needed to perform a clean install on, this has been done.... Read more

My Hp pavillion pc started crashing a lot recently and recovery didn't work so I told was advised to get a new hard disk which I did but now I keep getting the above error. I've been into the bios and all seems to be booting from the correct drive
The first time I tried the hp recovery disk it started to work but when it came to reinstalling the software it stayed on 0% for long so I switched off. Maybe that was a mistake. I've run a diagnostics test all passed the test but at the end it said testing: Boot path, error code BIOHD-3.

I tried putting the old drive back in and it was the same as before. But I was still able to go online, albeit until it crashed again.
HP want more money to help even though I brought the recovery discs they suggested.

I really hope someone can help, I've been told there needs be A partition before the software can be installed.

Sorry if the wording is a bit messed up, I am writting this from a mobile.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Answer:Non-system disk or disk error with new hard drive

Have you tried to run the recovery disks again? They should automatically put a partition on the hard drive.

If it still doesn't work then there's usually one of two different possibilities:
- bad recovery disks
- other bad hardware in the system

I'd suggest running these free bootable diagnostics first: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Then, if those tests pass, contact HP to return the defective recovery disks and get a new set.

I was advised by a computer tech to buy a new hard drive because of issues I had with my HP pavillion s3330.
After installing I got a non-system disk error message.
After going into the BIOS to make sure it was booting my HP recovery cd from the the right drive, I ran a diagnostics test and after finding no problems an error message came up at the bottom saying - Testing: BOOT PATH, Error code: BIOHD-3.

I consulted HP who said I need to create a partition for the software to be installed to.
If that is the problem then can anybody assist me with this as I have no clue.

By the way, I'm using Vista home premium.

Thanks,

Greg

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail  SATA hard drive can be used. I believe this model uses a laptop/mobile hdd.Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Ok I am going crazy. . .

I was having issues with my computer, and it acting up, so, having a Dell XPS, I restarted and hit CTRL-F11 to go to the system restore menu for restoring to factory defaults. I have done this many times before and it has worked fine. However this time it got part way through the process and it said it could not be completed (but it had gotten far enough to delete my previous installation). I tried it several more times and those times it didn't even progress, just failed at the beginning.

So . . .

I set my bios to boot from the CD drives first, and put in my XP installation disk. Get the option to boot from CD, hit enter, see a flash of a message of something along the lines of "inspecting configuration of hardware" or something or other then go to a black screen. . . and it stops there. Nothing else happens.

I call Dell technical support, do all the normal utilities for looking for hardware problems, inspecting all the hardware and it passes all the tests (both the dell provided tests and the 90-90 ones). So they decide to send me a new OS CD (I had originally had media center on the system and could not find that and was using an XP disk). So I waited for the new disk to arrive.

However during the time since then I have been trying to boot on both my drives from XP full install, XP upgrade, Windows ME, Windows XP media center, and none of them can get past the black screen of death. Also occasionally I get an error message along... Read more

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

ty!

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

FYI, the 2nd partition can be accessed and read. But the 1st partition of the hard disk (for OS) appeared this error when i try to open it : "THE DISK STRUCTURE IS CORRUPTED AND UNREADABLE". Is anyone can help me to solve this problem?

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

Answer:Confused about installing Windows on my hard disk, hard disk problem

I'm willing to bet that Disk 1 is the bad hard drive since the bad hard drive was the D: drive.

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).

I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)

Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s

I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.

Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you describe...is that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.

Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Suppose I use my computer at two difference - at home and at university. When I'm home I want all the software applications and files to be there on the computer. But when outside I only need messenger and the browser and no much. You may suggest that I have two profiles. But this way I would only be able to hide My Documents files and all the installed applications and there icons would be there. I don't like this. I want my laptop's hard disk to act as two. So that one can be used when I'm outside. Do you get what I'm trying to do? I'm using Win XP Pro. Please guide me. Thanks.

I have an external hard disk of Samsung 650GB which got damaged when I was transferring some files to my pc through it. Now when I connect to any PC or Laptop it shows the safely remove icon but there is no letter assigned to it and also doesn't show up in My Computer though it can be seen in Disk Management.

I tried Mini Tool Partition Wizard but when I create a new partition it stops at 90%. I tried wiping out the partition but to no avail.

Is there any solution for it??? Please help.

Answer:Creating A New Partition Or Wiping A Partition On External Hard Disk Stuck

I would check the manufacturers site for a windows utility to low level format it. If you cannot find a utility to do that on manufacturer's site, then try this: http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ to wipe the drive. WARNING!! this will destroy all data on the selected hard drive!! be very careful when selecting a drive to wipe that you don't inadvertently select the wrong disk. After a low level format, unplug the drive, plug back in, windows should detect as a new, virgin, drive and it'll prompt you to format it. Format it and hopefully everything will be fine from here on out for you.

Post back, Hope this helps!!

I hae a ACER laptop. Its around 5 years old. The CD drive doesn't work for it. Now my OS got corrupted and i messed with a lot to fix it. I have removed the hard drive from laptop and tried to copy the misisng files. But unfortunately i deleted teh complete OS. Now its a smple drive. So if i need to install fresh windows XP on it, i can't do that as there is no bootable device. How i can fix that. My laptop also doesn't support USB BOOT drive.

Answer:make bootable hard disk

Take the drive out and stick it in a computer that does. You need a bootable drive to do what you want. There is no other way because you have to boot some kind of OS otherwise the computer will do nothing.

how to make hard disk become unallocated?
just like a new hard disk

Answer:how to make hard disk become unallocated

Delete the volume in disk management - dont forget all the data is lost - seems you know that - to make it a new disc altogether you need to go the manufactures site and download sofware to make a bootable disk eg seagates lets you zero the drive then its as new, as you have to reinitialise it to get it to work.

I am a new player here, so excuse me if i make a mess of this. I have a Sony Vaiol laptop and am  running vista.  I haven't used it for a lot other than internet, so data etc.is limited and space is good.my problem started suddenly when i turned on pc and a black screen with the error message,"disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to continuie."didnt do it! Wouldnt do anyuthing. Finally, I acquired legal sony recovery disks. And when the screen to choose operating system comes up, there is none so it says apply drivers and im lost, I have no familiarity with hard disk drivers so....but did bring up command prompt in recovery and through luck and lil else, i happened on chkdsk and found it to all check out but it does say NTFS not fat 32, but found no problems. Now Im dumb completely!!! Help if you can.

Answer:hard disk`??? wont reboot even with recovery disk yet all disk checks say fine.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Look at this article from last year:Sony Vaio Laptop Recall: Everything You Need To KnowRead the article. You decide.

Answer:partition of a hard disk

Put your boot disk in and boot, assuming you have one. Then type "fdisk" at prompt. When ask if you want large disk support say type "Y" this will make a FAT32 partition. Then select create new boot partition which is the first choice if I remember. It should ask you how big you want the partition, type in the size and name the volume. Once this is done go back in and select the second choice which is activate partition and make your boot partition active. Then reboot and format. I hope that helps.

Go to the Orb search box and type in "create and format " There will be an option at the top to "create and format hard disk partitions".

Click on that and your hard drives, with their current partitions, will show up. Select the drive/partition you want to change and right click on the partition. One of the options will be to shrink the partition.

At this point you can change the size.

There are third party utilities that will also partition the drives and re-arrange the data at the same time.

As long as I am asking questions I might as well ask a couple ...

Is there a way to partition the primary disk on a computer without reformatting? A computer that I inherited (HP Pavillion) has a 120Gb hard drive partitioned into two sections ...

C drive 104Gb NTFS primary
D drive 7Gb FAT32 recovery

I would like to split the primary into two sections, if possible without reformatting. Any reliable way?

Blue Dog

Answer:Partition Hard Disk

The D drive is your System recovery and you will have to use a 3rd Party software such as Partition Magic to split the C drive. This will probably cause your recovery not to work if you need it. Did this HP come with any CD's? Like a Recovery CD? I wouldn't attempt it if you don't have a way to re-install the O/S.

I have Win XP home and a copy of ME and want two opearating systems on one hard disk, how do I partition them and do this, and if I do do this, will I have the option at startup of which opearating system I want to use, help in advice please, Thanks.

Answer:partition hard disk

Install ME first, Rhuddlan. Then insert the XP CD and choose Custom install it will ask you if you want to create a partition from the free space, if I remember correctly (it's been a while since I did it) answer Yes and direct it to install on that partition. When both OSs are installed you will get the option, on bootup, to choose which OS to load, ME or XP, it will default to load XP after 30 secs if you don't choose.

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a computer running Windows Vista and I was able to do a partition myself, withouth the use of any software (I've seen other threads about using software to do so, but actually it is very easy to do without any software).

But know I would like to know what's the best way to manage the computer. Is it better to keep the OS and the programs in one drive and the data in another? Or have three drives and separate the OS and the programs as well? One of the partitions, where the OS is store, is 85GB, I guess Windows Vista doesn't need so much space, so if necessary I could partition that drive.

I really appreciate your thoughts here, I want to start doing the right thing from the begining.

Thanks a lot,
Maria

Answer:Best way to partition a hard disk?

Bear in mind the OS is 16 gb alone. Personally I no longer bother with multiple partitions because it is easier to make backup image files of one drive and place them on another...same is true for image and file backups. Also safer.

Answer:hard disk partition

There are differnet reasons for Extend Volume Grayed outBelow are few situations where a "Extend Volume" will not work:1.If there is no unallocated or free space on hard disk or the space is not contiguous and after the partition which needs extending.2.Users want to extend a primary partition, but there is just a free space right after the target partition.3.if the partition is not a NTFS partition. As per Microsoft extending volume feature in Disk Management only works to a raw or NTFS partition.Try using MiniTool Partition Wizard which can help you with the issue.http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Free-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.htmlRegardsSATISHP4 Click " Thumb's up " icon if the question is answered/resolved.

There is 160GB HDD in C: 141GB and in D: 8GB

In c: 60GB, in D: 50GB and in E: 50GB

Please guide me how can i partition my hard disk as above mentioned.

Thanx in advance

Answer:Hard Disk Partition?

The 8 gB D: partition is likely to be your recovery partition - and you don't want to mess with that. I would also leave it as the D: partition in case the system recognizes the D: partition as the restore partition.

To partition the rest of the drive, you'll need a 3rd party utility (such as Partition Magic) to do this. You cannot do this from within Windows because Windows is using the partition and won't allow it to be changed. Partition Magic (and the others like it) will allow you to setup the partitions in Windows and the reboot for the changes actually to be made.

Sure, you can have a dual boot system, I would recommend using Partition Magic. It's a non-destructive partitioning app that will take your free space and part it out so the your linux can live happily. Just don't use FDISK.. it will wipe your drive out.

Hi,

I have windows 7 operating system running on my laptop. I am planning to install windows vista as second operating system in different drive.

I have 2 drives C: (279 GB) and D: ( 10GB). If I need to install windows vista in D: drive, I need to increase its capacity to atleast 20 GB. C:drive has empty space of 119GB. My questions are

1) The maximum shrink volume for C:drive is 5 gb. Why doesn't it allow me to shrink more than 5gb when I have enough empty space in C:drive. Please let me know of any instructions to shrink it to more volume.

2)If you see the attachment of JPEG image, on left i have D: drive which volume has to increase.C: drive is on right. When I shrink C: the volume of unallocated space is shifted to right. How to merge D:drive volume with the unallocated space volume.
If I ca shrink c: drive to more than 5 volume the i can delete D: drive by which my problem ca be resolved. Incase if I cannot shrink C: to more than 5gb I need to find a way to merge D: drive volume with the unallocated space volume.

Please do give a clear instructions on how to proceed and do't forgot to see the attachment which helps in showing the drive locations.

Use this;

You need to check your documentation to make sure it isn't the hidden Recovery partition which you may need some day...if it is you can still follow rhe guide for creating the Recovery CF's at which point you can delete the info and use the drive for storage...I usually make 2 sets and store 1 off site just in case.

Normally when you edit partitions on your disks it formats them. I hope you have a copy of your OS handy.

It sounds like you wiped your hdd(s) because you were messing around with the partitions.

My opinion: Use your OS install disk to edit the partitions how you would like & reinstall.

I just bought a used HP 6910p and it came with the 'original' OS, etc. CDs (or so I thought).
I wanted to do a clean XP Install and when I start to load from the CD it tells me it cannot find a hard drive.
It looks like the XP CD does not have the SATA drivers on it.
I can boot the system from the HD - can I 'create' a XP install CD from the HD with all the correct drivers, etc. on it?

If there is a step-by-step doc or instructions on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

I am getting a new Hard Disk & I was wondering what difference a Serial ATA Hard disk make over ATA 133 HDD ?

I have DELL P4 2.6 GHz, 512 MB DDR ( 400 MHz ), 80 GB Maxtor ATA 133 HDD.

I want to replace 80 GB ATA 133 (7200 RPM) with a new 160 GB HDD and was wondering whether I should get regular ATA 133 OR Serial ATA HDD ?

Can you please tell me the Pros & Cons?

Thanks
Mike

Answer:Would Serial ATA Hard Disk Make any difference ?

Little to none on a smaller HDD. The faster interface speed doesn't overcome the bottleneck of the mechanical rotation. Data can only rotate so fast under a read head, so fairly often the only effect is a burst to the read/write buffer.

However, the larger the capacity of the hard drive, the more dense the data is packed onto the disk (in general). So if you compare two single-platter drives with the same rotational speed, the one with the higher capacity will have higher data density and will therefore be able to pass more data under the read head in the same amount of time. So a higher density disk tends to have higher throughput. It's the same as the difference between a DVD and a CD. They're both 5 inches across and can rotate at about the same speed, but because the data is so much more dense on the DVD you have much higher throughput. That's why installing off of a DVD is so much faster.

Once we start seeing non-mechanical hard drives as well as dual-layer and multi-layer hard drives the interface speed might become the bottleneck, but that's not likely to happen for another 4-5 years. By then, faster interfaces will likely have been developed.

Ok first off I want to say I've searched and searched and searched to no avail in trying to find a solution to this I've come to the conclusion it's software and not hardware based. Let me start from the top.

I've had an older computer (HP Pavilion a408x) out of commission for a while due to a 'sploded psu. I finally get around to ordering one, install it and everything is good. I bring it back to my office and hook it up to the internet and as expected there's updates. So I up date it and after the updates are installed the computer restarts automatically (weird yes) and as it's coming back on it detects errors and runs CHKDSK. So I let it run and it gets to part 2 of 3. At this point in time my partner is really needing to print sometime and all computers print through this computer. So after about 45 minutes CHKDSK is still on part 2 at only 15%. So I'm like "screw it" and manually shut down and restart. It's at this point I get a "primary master hard disk failure" at the boot screen. Letting start up continue I get a "Stop : c000021 unknown hard error \systemroot \system 32 \ntdll.dll" At this point I realize something is delectably wrong.

Found this thread, which didn't help much. At some point the c000021 error stops and I start getting "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" and I found this thread, which didn't help much either. I have also been searching other sites as well.

Here's what I found ou... Read more

Answer:Hard Drive not found "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter"

Anything would be super helpful, even if it's bad news. I just need to know if I can get this remedied or not.

Another thing I noticed is that the HDD activity light on the front of the computer does not blink or show any activity.

Thanks!

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.

A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.

Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.

Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?

Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.

I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

My unit is Lenevo 3000 V200My remaining free space on my hard disk is 27.4GB out of 120GBI have few files, Pictures, Music on my computer.I notice every time my computer update and back up it consume more space in my hard disk.I am worried in a few months i will have no more space in my hard disk.  What should i do?Can this be resolve? Can i upgrade my hard disk?

Answer:How to free up hard disk space? or Can i upgrade my hard disk?

The System Restore uses a lot of disk space, if it is in disk C, move it to disk D.Clean up the Temp. files and registry.Defragment your disks.Uninstall unnecessary files.Save your personal files in Disk D. Save downloaded files in Disk D.Do not or install  and uninstall the "Optional" updates. Always perform Disk Cleanup. The above will release some space in Disk C.

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Thanks

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

Hi all,I recently bought a HP DV6-3299eg laptop and it has started to show up a SMART Hard disk error screen whenever the computer is turned on.  Also, when I'm using the machine it pops up warning messages saying there is a problem with the hard drive and i need to back-up. However, when I run the System Diagnostics Quick and Full Hard Disk tests, they pass 100%. Also, when I run the Start-up test, the Memory test is a 100% pass. And the Primary Hard Disk Self test is 100% passed.  But on both the start-up test screen and the Hard Disk test screen it shows up "SMART check: Hard Disk 1 SMART (301). No warranty code shows up only that SMART check error number. I bought the computer in Vienna, Austria, but am currently in Budapest, Hungary. The chain of stores I bought it from (SATURN) has stores in both countries and so I took it to the Budapest store yesterday to see what they could do.  Through minimal broken English I understood i was to go home and reinstall windows and that would get rid of the problem.  But that is not the case.  I reinstalled windows 7 last night, then upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (to get the laptop working in English), and the SMART check error still shows up on start-up.  I've backed up all my files and just waiting to see what happens. I phoned HP support earlier but they're closed as it's Sunday, so I will try again tomorrow. So in the meantime I thought I would post on here and see ... Read more

Hi there everyone, I have two hard drives, C the primary and d the salve, is there any way that I can partition drive d without opening the computer up and removing anything, as I want to put both XP and ME on my second hard drive, I have talked about this in other threads before, but everyone was telling me that I would have to open the computer up and take drive c out and use drive d as the primary drive, but that's the last thing I won't to do, any other suggestions please, help needed, thanks, regards, Rhuddlan.

Answer:Partition hard disk drive d

I think i may have posted to one of those threads (not to sure) but the reason for taking the drive out is to be sure that you are installing to correct drive and so that nothing happens to the other one. Also in one post ME would not install at all with XP installed. The solution was to take the other drive and it was ok.Take the drive out - You do not have to literally remove it, you can remove the power connector. Thats all. Also the other method of creating a partiton can be done with FDSIK but FDISK is not very user friendly so removeing the drive would solve alot of problems. Using FDISK incorrectly can wipe everything.

At last, my new system is here:

Athlon XP 1900+
Windows XP Home
512Mb PC2100 SDRAM
100Gb HDD
64Mb Geforce 3 Ti+500 graphics
18" LG TFT monitor
Videologic Digitheatre 5.1 speakers

I've read it's a good idea to separate applications, windows, downloads, even MP3s, and the swapfile....and more!

Where do I start, how do I start? I'm anxious to keep this system pristine from day one, so I haven't installed a thing and am writing this from my sh*tty old P200.

Any advice gratefully received

Good morning,

My operation system is windows XP. When I am under Windows I can see that I have 2 hard drives;
- the C: (around 5GB total: 4.5GB used )
- the F: (around 4GB total: 0.5GB used)
A friend gave me 2 disks to partition these two hard disks. My plan was to extend the C: drive to 7GB and to have the F: drive at 1GB.
When I started the partition program, I figure out that my C: drive was not expendible for whatever reason (maybe it's lock like that or maybe it's 2 physicals diferent disks). Also I was able to expend the F: drive to 15GB. So I tried to expend the F: drive to 8GB.
At this point the program asked me to re-boot my computer to save the changes made on the F: drive.
I tried to do it but my computer didn't re-boot; it stoped with an error message saying: "NTLDR Missing"

I would apreciate any help on this.

Thanks in advance.

A while ago I added a second hard drive of 80GB to my system which I originally partitioned using the supplied install disk into a 60/20 split.I then got into video editing and decided I would like to unpartition the drive and get it back to its original state. To do this I tried to use Partition Commander (supplied as a full product free on a magazine cover disk) which said it was good for novices such as myself with easy to follow instructions.Well, you can probably guess the rest. I tried to delete the 20Gb partition but ended up completely wiping my main disk!! I have now reinstalled this but my second drive now only has 60GB on it.I have deleted it from device manager and reformatted it but the computer tells me that it is a 60GB disk and all manner of system tools report the same.I am at my wits end to work out how to get the other 20GB back. Surely it must be there somewhere? Can anyone please help?I thought about buying Partition Magic but my fear is about spending 50 to find that this too thinks it is a 60GB disk.

Answer:Hard disk partition disaster

you probably have just made the 20gb not dos active. If you have a startup disk put it in and boot the pc. I assume that there is nothing left on the drive so more damage can be done. type fdisk and one of the options lists what it sees. You may well find that the 20gb has been set as non active.

i have a 500gb Freecom external hard drive, i use it for both storing files and multimedia playback via my xbox 360, it was setup as a Fat32 format, but i needed to store files larger than 4gb on it so i took everything off reformatted it to NTFS and put the large files on there, now i found out the xbox 360 wont read this format, so im guessing the answer is to partition it? one side being NTFS other Fat32? is that possible and also do i have to remove all of my files back across again took 4 hours last time. it has 200gb left.
what program to use as well, like a free one if possible!

Hi,

I have an Acer Aspire computer. It already has a C: Drive and a Data drive (partition).

If the computer was to stop working could I put the hard disk in another computer? Would either the C: or the D: drive retain any of their files?

Currently I have all files on the C: drive. I cant see any reason for having a separate partition for the D: drive except maybe as a backup.

Thanks for your help!

My laptop has 320 GB hard disk but it has not been partitioned. It has Windows Vista pre installed. Is there any way to make partitions from the C drive? C drive is my entire hard disk right now.

Answer:How to partition a hard disk which has windows

Sure, go Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Disk Management and right click on the drive then choose shrink. After the shrink you will then have to assign a drive letter and format the new partition. There's a command that you can run to go directly there but I don't recall it ATM. Someone else here knows for sure.

I am re arranging my hard disk. I got a new external 80 G one. I would like to know if deleting the current internal hard disk partition, is there any danger to loose informations or is just a simple movement. This, because the cause of re arrangement is lack of space and if I dlete the partition I will be able to work more easy with the transferring, uninstalling and reintsalling programs in the external one.
