seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

Question: seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

I'm looking to buy a new 80-120 gb hard drive; a seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. Which brand should I buy? Have any of you guys had bad experiences with any of these brands?

Preferred Solution: seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

you should not really group the maxtor into that mix. out of those three brands or any other, i am almost positive it is the only manufacturer that makes an ATA133 drive.

something that crushes all of the other vanilla flavored ATA100 disks. its speed is unmatched except when talking about SATA. so if you want a fast IDE disk go maxtor. if you are looking for relaibility sacrificing speed from an IDE disk go seagate.

if you are looking at Serial ATA. . . . ask somebody else, i know next to nothing about them

Question: maxtor or seagate?

I have to choose between a maxtor HD and a seagate. they are both pretty much the same.

Maxtor / DiamondMax 10 / 300GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-150 / OEM / RoHS Compliant (Maxtor supports the EU directive for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS))

Seagate SATA 300gig 7200rpm 16mb 5yr Warranty

which one should I pick?

Answer:maxtor or seagate?

I've always favored Maxtor, but a 5-year warranty is very tempting.

...The saga of my new computers continues.

We ordered new computers with Maxtor 120 gig HD's.
When we went to pick them up they'd installed Seagates instead, should we be concerned?
Is it worth the hassle to have them changed, are Seagate, THAT bad?
Thanks

I already tried (4 times) cloning my HDD with the Maxtor software but that didn't work. I used the Seagate software on a Seagate HDD(120GB) and it worked perfectly. I now want to use it on my Maxtor 200GB HDD but I get a warning that the Seagate software is for Seagate HDDs. I want to clone it to use it in the same computer - Dell 2350 Dimension, 768MB of memory, P4, 2.1Ghz. Should I follow the warning? Does it matter?

Answer:Should Seagate software be used w/ a Maxtor HDD????

If it were mine I'd try it anyway, it just might work! Bill Gates put phony software warnings in Win95 that would popup when you tried installing certain (non-microsoft) products - so you would buy from him. But it was just a fake warning that the aftermarket software wouldn't work, because they did.
That could be the case here - but then again it might not really work - so be careful...

Maxtor is taken from the playing field. Apparently quality control problems were affecting an untold number of drives and their profits were cut in half over recent years.

That leaves two big players, Seagate and Western Digital. Ugh. I'm not sure I'm too happy about that. There's always Samsung too, but they aren't exactly a player.

I have a HP.pavilion a705w tower and want to clone the 5400 rpm. Hard drive to a 250 gb. 7200 Maxtor. Can I use the maxtor software that comes with the hard drive to clone the seagate 40 gb. to the Maxtor 250gb? Will there be any problems because of the two differant hard drive brands ? Thanks.

Answer:Clone Seagate to Maxtor?

No problem at all, that's exactly what the software is supposed to do.

Also added to this mix is Seagate owns Maxtor, so they're only "soft of" different brands anyway.

So for the longest time, I've had this weird-*censored* thing going on with my hard drives. The first drive that came with my computer was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7. It's been great.About six months ago, I picked up another hard drive, a Maxtor Diamondmax 16.The two drives hate each other.Seriously. If the Barracuda is on Master and the Maxtor on Slave, I get an N**** (should have written it down...) not found error immediately upon turning the computer on. I don't even get as far as the BIOS prompts. If I put them both on Cable Select, the same thing happens. I finally wound up slaving the Maxtor off my DVD-RW, and that sort of worked. Well, it flat-out worked. I kept an old 20GB hard drive and slaved it off the Seagate. That worked too.But now with a computer running off a rowing machine downstairs, I wanted that old 20G drive (Western Digital, just to make sure I'm hitting all the bases) down there to stick MP3s on. So it's no longer slaved off the original Seagate drive. And I wanted to use that free IDE spot to run a DVD-ROM I have but am not using. Unfortunately, the IDE cable that goes to my DVD-RW is the only one that could also reach the DVD-ROM, but it is needed to slave the Maxtor.Or rather it was. Now that there's no slave on the Seagate, the Maxtor can't be used ANYWHERE on either IDE cable or the system won't get past the first stages of startup. The computer is working right now because I've unplugged the Maxtor drive entirely. To make things slightly more annoyin... Read more

Hi all,

Lately I've noticed that Seagate seems to be making a comeback in the retail market. Not too long ago, you could walk into any computer-chain type store and your only choices were Maxtor, Western Digital or the in-house brand (CompUSA).

I've always leaned towards the Western Digital drives. I know that Seagate had a great reputation, but is it still continued today?

So what you y'all think. Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate?

Answer:Poll: Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate HDD's?

Western Digital (religiously)

I have had nothing but bad times with Maxtors.

However, If fujitsu was still making HDDs i'd go with them.

Answer:External Hard drives Maxtor or Seagate

Yes the latest drives all need ( iirc as I only looked at a handfull last week while looking into getting one myself ) USB2.0, so you would have to also buy a USB2.0 PCI addon card to run the EHD from.

on the subject of what drives, I have used, either in work or for friends, both Maxtor and Seagate drives and found them to be ok, as for one with a fan, it is an advantage to have a fan if the ones your looking at come with them especially if the room where it will be used alot is warm, but if its well ventilated then they get hot but no hotter than internals can get.

Options I ended up toying with are;

From Seagate

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usb ( USB2.0 only and slightly under your requested 300gb, max in this range is 250gb at present )

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external/usbfirewire ( funny enough datasheet says USB1.1 compatible, but data transfer will be much slower than USB2.0 ) reason I like this option was its stackable.

http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/portable/index.html ( smaller size than what you listed but, we use these in work and they do perform well for drives that will fit in the palm of your hand )

From Maxtor

http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OTIII_USB/ ( I do like the One Touch Series )

USB2.0 PCI card http://www.verbatim.com.au/products.cfm?productID=KW2580E2 no doubt you can find some at a local retaliers in either 2 or 4 port versions.

My Seagate 500Gb external drive is no longer recognized, its an unknown device-how to replace the small circuit board inside the external hard drives casing, which connects the psu and 27 pin (sata?) cable to the hdd? I think the board is the cause for the device not being recognized. The drive has stopped functioning, although it whirrs and its light comes on every single time I connect it to the pc. The drive and its content do not show..in devices I have an unrecognized device, and many usb devices that shouldnt be there. I found out that moving the usb cable gently at the hdd connectors end has helped show the drives content in the past, but now its not working or showing anything at all, so I think the circuit board inside the casing (that connects the hdd to the usb and power supply) may have been the problem from the start. The drive connects with a standard psu and 27 pin connector, which I think is sata.

My external hdd looks like it has a smaller version of the connection within the blue circle here (this is what the circuit board connects to), but everything else in this shot is missing (since this pic is from an internal I found off the net, not my external):

As seagate are unlikely to send me a new replacement circuit board for the external so that the hdd might function once more, I am wondering if its possible to make the hdd work on any desktop as an internal hdd? I know I can get 27 pin to usb cables, but that still leaves me needing to provide power to... Read more

I'm shopping for advice fm this forum on external hard drive to provide for full system backups for my Dell XPS. I've read spec's on the Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital & Omega. My built in hard drive is 120gb so I probably wouldn't consider anything lower than 80gb. Any recommendations?

Answer:Advice on Maxtor & Seagate External Hard Drives

I hate to wander off track... but why external, why not internal? Faster and cheaper at least last time I checked.

As for brands, with hard drives, I am a big fan of buying the name that your confident in. If you check similar threads below, you will find most people suggest a hard drive based on their experiences, because the differences are small to non existant. I have been a Western Digital fan for many years. Since you have read specs, sounds like your way ahead of most of us already.

Hi all!

My 30gb Maxtor is acting funny for a few days now. At times I’ll get a balloon popup in the system tray saying, “New Hardware Found” and the name of it is “Laxtnr” I go into device manager and sure enough Maxtor is now Laxtnr! At times it’s accessible under that name and other times it’s not. I uninstall the Laxtnr drive and then search for hardware changes and then Laxtnr will now become Maxtor! I ran SeaTools and it passed all tests so what the heck?

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Getting the "unable to delete extended partitions while logical drives exist" message in Fdisk, but all logical drives have been erased.I don't know what make of HDD the laptop has, but am I safe to use the Seagate Disk Wizard Starter Edition to erase/zerofill the drive ready for XP to go back on?Thanks.

Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

I installed a Maxtor 15G HD as the secondary HD. My computer recognized it OK but Win98 doesn't assign the HD any new drive letters; i.e. D,E,F. Why doesn't Win98 see it? Does this make sense and what are the risks of doing this?

Question: Maxtor USB HD

Hi everyone,

I backed up my old laptop to my 80GB Maxtor USB hard drive. However, when I went to format my old laptop's hard drive I accidently deleted the partition on the Maxtor!

So now I can't get my new laptop to recognize my Maxtor drive. I've tried to use Maxtor's support, but they are useless. They keep telling me to try different USB ports and to remove the USB controller. This isn't bad advice, but I have been told it three times!! You'd think they would read the previous posts, but they don't.

I'm running XP, and when I plug the hard drive into the USB port the machine says, "Unknown USB device connected" (or something like that). When I look at the Disk Manager it only lists my internal drive and the CD-ROM.

Anyway, that's my conundrum. Anybody got any ideas?

Question: DOA - Maxtor HD

I am in process of fixing a PC for a family member.  Its a small shop homebrew, ASUS MB, Athalon processor, 512MB RAM, VIA Chipset, etc, running WinXP.  It was delivered to me non-booting and caked with dust. First step was to clean it, then start checking. After running through the boot sequence, final message was "No Boot Drive detected...."  Watching the POST, it was not seeing the 40GB Maxtor HD. Bios settings were correct, was able to boot off Win 98 diskette. Running utilities like MaxBlast, no HD seen.Swapped in a 20GB WD Drive off an old tower, and it booted up just fine, running WinMe that was installed on the WD. Powered down, plugged in the Maxtor as a Slave (Grey connector, jumper in proper place), rebooted, and back to the original problem. No boot disk detected)  Thought maybe it had something to do with Windows versions, and File Systems, so I disconnected the Maxtor, rebooted just fine on the WD, reformatted it to NTSF, installed WinXP, did all the updates to SP2, and continued on with all current updates. It runs fine.NOW, all I want to do is recover some important files from the Maxtor. (Geneology stuff). As soon as I plug in the IDE cable (grey connector + power) and reboot, I'm back to the same initial "No Boot DIsk" error. Ok-here is the scoop. I have a Maxtor 5000LE which has been doing a decent jpb until now. It hangs up and says the colume is dirty. I have been unable to access the Drive (F) and it says the voume does not contained a recognized file system. I finally got it to the point where I could "repair" the last copy BUT it has been on for hours now. The orange light keeps flashing but I do not think anything is happening. I would like to wipe it clean and start from scratch but I cannot seem to do that because it says F cannot be opened. Any help would be greaty appreciated..

Question: WD or Maxtor?

I stopped in at the local bestbuy for some holiday shopping and saw that they have a 80gb WD hd for 35$, and 80gb Maxtor hd for 80$. The maxtor is ata 133 while the wd is only ata 100, both have 8mb cache. Which one is better not considering the price? I know I can find better deals on the maxtor ata133 online. Or is there a different brand i should consider for a new system hard drive?

Thanks.

Answer:WD or Maxtor?

I don't like to have anything to do with MAXTOR.

I would go for the Western Digitals.

However i would go for SEAGATE personally as they now come with a 5 year manufacture's warranty.

Question: Maxtor NAS

Hi All, first post here

I'm interested in getting one of the maxtor shared storage drives to connect to my router. I've had a look at the specs on the maxtor site and it mentions that another maxtor onetouch 2 can be added. I have a maxtor onetouch, but it is not a one touch 2. Do you think that I will be able to join that to the shared storage drive or is there a good reason why only the one touch 2s are able to?

thanks for your help!

It would be helpful if you provided a link to the actual product you're considering, or at least an exact model number.

Question: Maxtor Ex-hd drive

I am so pissed ! Xp wont read my external hd AGAIN !!
It says its a RAW file system. Not so. Well, maybe IT sees it that way.
and says to reformat it, no files on it. lol
Its a usb hd and i can plug into my win-me machine and its there, as a fat32 file system as it should be. This has happened once before, right after I installed SP2 for xp. Some time after I unintalled Sp2, I got the drive back.
It wasnt right away, and I cant remember what, if anything, I did to get it back. I have done a m$ update recently but still have not done a SP2 on it.
Anyone have a idea of WHAT update could have caused this? If it was a update. Or how can I get my hard drive back.

situation
trying to get a brand new xp installation on to this 160gig
but xp only reads drive as a 127
and i cant use ata133 card with out first installing xp
tried using maxblast
and it got my 160 out and got the xp to install
but this is not on the ata 133
installed the drivers afer i installed xp
and then switched the cable over to the controller
but then i get an error dynamic drive overlay not found

i'm sure there a lot of people with this drive since it was cheap

any help would be appreciated

Answer:maxtor 160 ata 133 card

I'm fairly sure the ata133 should be usable without the xp....unless your system is WAY old.....maybe the ata133 is bad? If the "normal" ata connections to the mobo work but the ata card does not, then I'd check for newer drivers...you might have to return that ata133 card though....

I had a Maxtor 160 gb, Diamond Max Plus 9 drive set as a backup slave drive on my computer. It was NTFS formatted, and worked well for the most part. In one instance, I had a problem while creating an ISO file, and ended up not being able to access the drive. It read as 0 for space available and 0 for space used. I formatted the drive and started new. It worked pretty well again until recently when I was having trouble deleting files from the drive. It was running slow after that, so I decided to run a scandisk on the drive after defragging it. After Windows rebooted and finished the chkdsk, I couldn't access the drive.

The drive shows up in the device manager, and the BIOS, but isn't listed under Disk Management or under My Computer. I stopped being able to access it right after doing the chkdsk on it. I wonder if maybe the MFT is corrupt, and if this is the case, how to I go about repairing it. I'm willing to spend however much money to have the data recovered, but I don't wanna dish out 300 bucks sending it to a third party company, if I can just buy a 50 dollar program and do it myself. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm not so worried about the drive itself, more just getting the data off of it so I can send for an RMA to Maxtor.

EDIT: I've also seen that there's known issues with Maxtor and NTFS, and that countless other people have similar problems with similar Maxtor drives. There also doesn't seem to be any weird noises or... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 160 gb Not Accessible

you say you see in disc manager
does it show a drive letter, could have gotten unmounted somehow.A disc utility program ,might see the drive and get you data back if you have a place to put it.
I did a defrag on a drive resently and it got unmounted went into disc manager and gave it a drive letter
I tried to do another defrag and it did it again ,funny right before defrag it locked up on a 5 gb movie I was editing
so did the mount thing again got my data off of it and applied the old boot doctor to it reset all the clusters with magnetic reversal overwrite program ,now running just fine.how large was that ISO?I have not heard bout the ntfs problemI would think ,more of a windows large disc write problem
there are data recovery services on internet and you should have local.ones also.funny I don't get much demand for it where I live

Question: Maxtor HD Problem

I have just recently installed a maxtor HD, It is set up as a slave. The computer recognizes it in the CMOS, however it is not accessible when windows loads. In other words, the hard drive is working, but it is not visible or accesible in "My Computer".

Answer:Maxtor HD Problem

i'm assuming you have windows 2000/xp, then

right click on the "my computer" icon on your desktop and go to "manage"
on the left, click on disk management under storage
find your second drive (disk 1, NOT disk 0) and you should see that it's labeled unpartitioned or something like that.
right click on the unpartitioned part and create a new partition and just follow the wizard from there.

if you have any questions, feel free to ask. the disk management program isn't the greatest in the world.

Well i had to reformat my other hard drive with the windows xp on it. Now it is showing the hard drive as only having 129 gb's or something. The computer has service pack 1 on it already, but does not yet have sp2 on it. Could it be that i need to install sp2?

I have 2 Maxtor Harddrives.
(1) 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 160gig
(2) 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 120gig

Now I hear that there is a Known issue of maxtor Drives having Compatabilty issues with other Maxtor HDs, I think thats what Im experiencing. I cant have them on the same IDE cable otherwise the MotherBoard wont recognize the HDs properly, hense causing wondows not to start. So I checked and if I run them on speorate IDE cables everything runs Nice and Smooth. Then I remembered there are PCI cards you can buy that allow you to add more IDE slots. (since usuing 2 IDE cable for my 2 HDs would mean no IDE space for my DVD-ROM and CD-Burner) And I ran down to Best Buy and got this PCI card, Adaptec ASH-1233, Its a PCI card with 2 Ultra ATA/133 slots. Now I fallow the Guide book for the PCI card exactly and I cant get any HD with an OS to Boot from it. Ive tryed my 120 gig maxtor with Win XP Pro, and also my Old Programs HD an IBM 30gig also with Win XP Pro, and Both do the exact same thing. System Gets passed the BIOS and when it trys to Load Windows, it flashes a Blue Screen Error and Reboots. Doesnt even give me a chance to see what the error is.

Does Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try to either get my 2 maxtor drives working together or get this stupid PCI card functioning properly?

Thank you for reading my Post and Thanks for any suggestions anyone has. Please forgive any Misspellings.

So for those that own Maxtor hard drives, what do you think?

I bought a 300gb 16mb ATA 133 drive and a couple things I've noticed.

1. it makes noise when seeking. maybe I'm used to Western Digital because I have never heard ANY of my WD drives make noise. It's nothing I can't live with just not used to it. (it's not that loud but I do hear it)

2. Ever since I installed this drive I have noticed that when I cut and paste folders into another folder that it isn't quick. the pc doesn't hang or anything but the file doesn't move at all for about 30 seconds or so. then all of a sudden it moves. I never experience that problem before. It annoyed me so much that I formatted a second time this past weekend. The problem is still there. Maybe it's not the HDD at all? Not sure. The only changes I made were putting in 2x 1gb sticks of memory, the HDD and a video card.

Something is nagging at me about this and I just hate it when my pc is not running correctly. I thought maybe it was due to over clocking so I put everything back to normal and reformatted. the problem is still there. It doesn't happen all the time either. it's mainly (so far) when I cut and paste from the desk top.

do you think this could be a HDD issue?

Answer:Maxtor HDD possible problem?

I think I found the problem. Someone at another site asked me if my IDE drivers were up to date. They aren't so I will check that after work today.

Answer:Maxtor error

Well, the first step would be to turn everything off and try again. If that fails, try plugging the drive into another computer. This will identify if it's the drive of something with the system. Obviously, try a different USB port, and a different USB cable if you have one.

I use the support software. For whatever reason the program seems to be loading every time that I boot. Along the bottom of my screen I see the icon with Maxtor OneTouch next to it. Neither a left or a right click seems to phase it? How do I just make it go away?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch

dp,

This recommendation assumes you're using XP or Vista.

I'm not personally familiar with this software, but you can usually use msconfig to stop programs from loading automatically on startup if there isn't any other way.

Click <Start><Run>, type ,msconfig> (no carats) in the dialog box. Click on the Startup tab. Find the Maxtor program. Uncheck the box. Re-boot. If that doesn't work, you should check the software documentation.

Anyhow... since it won't work when I plug it into the computer, no icons, or anything popping up, even under my computer, is there any way I can save the photos etc that were on there? Hard floor? I had the same thing happen except it was a cat; managed to tip the drive over on the desk in its stand....toasted! It doesn't take much when its writing/reading to touch the platters and put a gouge in.

You can try taking the drive out and hooking it directly to the SATA or IDE connectors on a desktop PC and looking at the drive with recovery software like GetDataBack but if there's physical damage there may not be anything that can read the drive.

A friend has a Maxtor usb external hard drive for which she has forgotten the password, and thus can't get into it. I've checked the Maxtor Knowledge Base and found that the only real way forward is to erase the drive. The problem is that when progressing through the Maxtor software to erase the drive I find that after trying to erase the drive is not recognised. The software stops the drive appearing in My computer etc until the password is entered so it cannot be erased that way.Has anyone encountered this problem, and if so how did you get around it.I suspect that the only way will be to take the hard drive out of the case but that would invalidate the guarantee, and she tells me it's only been used once.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

However, every few minutes - sometimes seconds - I get a warning flash up that states EasyManager not found. Does anyone have any idea how I can get rid of this totally annoying warning?

Answer:Maxtor One Touch

You need to find out which process is running that displays the message, then find where its being started from.

It will either be started from the registry, as a service or simply from the startup folder. You need to identify the name of the process then use autoruns to disable it.

This will help you:

When the message appears, start task manager, you need to google any item that you don't know and don't go killing things unneccessarily it may stop your computer booting.

Question: Maxtor HD Freezes

Hi there I hope someone can help me out. The problem computer has a Maxtor Hard Drive Model # 6E040L0. A few days ago when Windows XP was installed on the HD the computer started to freeze - I would be browsing the web or doing something else and the computer would just freeze. Reboot and everything would be fine but then the next day the same thing would happen. So I figured maybe it was a computer virus or something you know I was decided to re-install Windows - but when the computer froze during the installation I started to worry. I even tried installing Slackware Linux but that freezes too. I went online with another computer and downloaded a Low Level Formatter Utility for the Maxtor Hard Drive. I booted up the system with the floppy disk and ran the program (MAXLLF.EXE) which identified my Hard Drive as Maxtor Model # 6E040L0 and I went about LL Formatting the HD. But as I would have guessed the computer froze again mid low level format!!

Now I know for sure the problem isn't the hard drive or maybe it is? I'm just really confused now and don't know what else I could do to fix this problem. I appreciate all suggestions and help anyone can offer. Thanks a lot!

P.S. - I know there are hardware viruses out there so for now I'm going to create a bootable floppy disk with anti-virus software on it and scan for viruses and hopefully eradicate it - then again would I even be able to complete the scan without the computer freezing up on me? Answer:Maxtor HD Freezes

There's a few things you need to check.

1). temps: if the system is overheating it could just be halting. Check them in the BIOS.

2). hard drive: they fail often. I suggest you download and run Maxtor's PowerMax utility: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/M...oftware Downloads/Top Downloads&downloadID=22
Also listen for the hard drive powering down while its running or for clicking.

3). Everything else. It could be a failing motherboard, power supply, or any other computer. Rule out the above too first as it'll probably be one of those.

Question: maxtor fireball 3

i have a maxtor fireball 3 40GB hard drive and the system sees it as a maxtor ares c64k. what can be done so it reads as fireball 3

Answer:maxtor fireball 3

It's explained in this link:
http://www.data-r-us.com/maxtor_1.html

"Firmware recovery operations

Other Maxtor drives suffer from corruption of the firmware microcode in the drive's service area. When this occurs the drive cannot be recognized by your computer CMOS/BIOS on boot, or recognized by one of the factory internal name, however produces normal spinning sound. So, if you see on the booting screen of your computer one of the incorrect names from this table, your drive definitely needs microcode repair."

As I would translate that, it means your drive is toast unless you want to spend serious money on data recovery.

Just put in my 2 cents worth: One reason could be there are hd size limitations with some mobos and you may have to partition to smaller chunks. Or the psu output wattage may not be great enough.

This icon is not visible in XP; simply the default drive icon isntead, also the drive name ("OneTouch4") is not used under XP; simply "Local Disc).

I've tried unplugging/restarting the hard drive while remaining in XP; but to no avail. XP claims that the drive is corrupt or unreadable however Vista is able to read it fine.

The OneTouch is comprised of 1 partition, NTFS formatted.

If anyone knows how I can get XP to read it it would be greatly appreciated as it holds all my music, and therefore I am working in silence when using XP.

Cheers,
Dean

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch 4 and XP

check Adminstrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management and see what things look like. Sometimes external drives have problems because XP tries to name different drives the same drive letter name, and the fix is to manual assign a drive letter name as needed to fix the issue.

Question: Solved: Maxtor HDD

Hey I was just given a working Maxtor HDD 40Gb, when I got it it was partitioned into two parts each of 20Gb so I deleted boththem partitions into one and that one is now RAW, the thing is everytime I try to format d: (the new drive) it says 'Windows failed to Format' or something like that.

Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks

EDIT: I tried formatting through CMD, The Windows Disk Partitioner tool, and right clicking the drive thenclciking format. But there is one thing, how do I use this '/FS' in CMD?

I have a Maxtor external drive that I used on my old computer to back up pics, etc. I just got a new computer with Windows Vista (I don't know if that's the problem?) and when I go to download the software from Maxtor for the new computer, it doesn't allow it. The download is a "diskette creator" and the error message is: Error reading drive. No diskette in drive, or driver failure.

When I try to plug the device into the USB port, it doesn't even recognize that I've done anything.

Could you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!

I have maxtor 750GB external hard drive. One time When I switch on I can access everything (100GB backup). Five minutes later either the exact same folders shows as empty or I get the error USB not recognised. Apparently this is a long standing problem with MS. I don't have any hope of any support from MS as they only want to sell me something else.
I would really appreciate any help from you guys aas I purchased the damn thing to safeguard my material. It seems a bit much to get another back up disk to back up your back up Etc.
What really confuses me is that i can access on PC and laptops but e.g when I try to delete files I get the USB error not recognised/
What I am hoping to do if you guys can help is (fingers crossed) burn everything onto DVDs Something that I thought was no longer needed due to external harddrives
Many thanks in advance
P.S I have uninstalled driversbfrom device manager restarted ,worked again for 5 mins then bam

Question: Maxtor Drive

I noticed that I have a Maxtor Drive 6L04052. I have been having trouble with me CD E dRvie. Does this Maxtor Drive effect it? What exaclty is this Maxtor Drive? What is it used for? I tried to look it up on the computer but found so many Maxtor Drives that I found it confusing. Please Help!

Answer:Maxtor Drive

Are you sure that's the right number, 6L04052? A search of Maxtor's site doesn't show that model number. A Maxtor drive is the hard drive where all you data is located as well as the operating system. Your primary hard drive effects everything since without it you're computer is a doorstop.

What trouble are you having with the CD drive?

Question: Maxtor one touch

I have an 80gb hard drive which is almost full so I decided to buy a Maxtor One Touch stand alone hard drive the idea being to transfer files from the main "C" drive onto it and then delete some to clear and make space on the "C" drive.I followed the limited install instructions and am currently backing up the "C" drive onto the Maxtor. I did click schedule backup each day. The question is, if I delete files from the main "C" drive will the Maxtor delete them from the backup folder when it next checks,or does it just add any new files? if so will I need to transfer them into a separate folder within the Maxtor?

Answer:Maxtor one touch

"if I delete files from the main "C" drive will the Maxtor delete them from the backup folder when it next checks": Not to sure about that, But I would think Not. My Buffalo Doesn't."or does it just add any new files?": Mine backs-up everytime a file goes onto the C: Drive.

Is anyone running the above combo? During my trawl for information I have seen referenced the fact that these two are not really good partners! Before I invest even more on another HDD I would welcome any advice. (I am currently running a Diamond9 200G with my A7N8X and was hoping to use it with my new A8N-SLI).

Answer:ASUS A8N-SLI with Maxtor HDD

Had no problems with a maxtor 120gb and hitachi 80gb on the a8n-sli.

Question: MAXTOR Dead, help!

Hi,

I have an external HDD, Maxtor 200GB. It stopped working, i smelled something burning. I removed the HDD and have it slaved to my Desktop PC. It sparked, so i removed the power cable immediately.

My question is, is there any other way to recover my files? It's supposed to be my backup disk.

Many thanks.

Hi,I have a Maxtor 1 touch mini 80g external hard drive which is connected via a usb 'y' cable. This has 2 x usb and 1 x mini usb connector. I have damaged the lead and am trying to replace it. They are not very common however I have managed to locate two. Both have come with a 'female' mini usb which is useless as it won't fit into the hard drive which is also a female. The second lead packaging (purchased from CPC) stated it was a male fitting which makes things a little confusing. Does anyone know where I can purchase a genuine Maxtor replacement lead? Please help, this is very frustrating.regards

Answer:Maxtor 'Y' usb cable

Will one of those USB multi fit cables work? click hereScroll down to see it
