Windows 7 Won't let me uncheck Read Only

Question: Windows 7 Won't let me uncheck Read Only

Basically I have a folder, it has been checked read only so all the files in it are also read only.

Now the folder contains songs, that I want to change the info of in iTunes but can't due to them being read only.

Every time I uncheck read only, hit apply, it just simply rechecks itself after I'm done. I have full access, so I don't know what to do anymore.

I tried searching the forums, but that didn't seem to do anything, so if this has been answered before please send me to the thread.

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Won't let me uncheck Read Only

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 7 Won't let me uncheck Read Only

Did you upgrade from Vista and had this folder on songs then? If so you may need to take owership.
In Windows 7, Right-click on the drive and click Properties
On the Security tab, click Edit
Click the Add button and enter your username (I entered it in the format "<ComputerName>\<UserName>")
Check the "Allow Full Control" box and click OK.

Hi all,

I searched a lot, but i can't find a solution.
I can't uncheck the read-only attribute on a folder.
I uncheck it, click ok, but afterwards is back to read-only.
The files in the folders aren't read-only only the folder itself.

Answer:Can't uncheck read-only

The read only attribute is not applicable to folders, only to files.

You will notice that the file read only block is not checked but only colored in.

Hi there Eiji try taking ownership of the folders: Take Ownership Shortcut

Just to check, are you the administrator on your PC?

you might want to take a look at this as well: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/10...attribute.html specifically the Command Line bit, as you have already tried the GUI method

Hi all.
I have troubles with the read-only attribute of folders.

I create folders and they are read-only by default. When I uncheck the read-only attribute it appears to obay my command but further inspection aftewards reveals that nothing has really happened.

I am the owner, I give to myself full rights but I cannot gain control on this feature.

It's very frustrating as I cannot edit the files in these folders.

I checked the web and found some pruposed solutions like using the dos attrib command but... no luck.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Answer:cannot uncheck folders' read-only attribute

Hello Skylos,

Double check using the tutorial below to see if it may help. In Windows, folders cannot be set as read-only. Only the files in the folders can be.

If the box is blue , then it's a default neutral setting that is always displayed. For a folder, it means all files in the folder not to be set as read-only.

Read-only File and Folder Attribute
Did you also take ownership of and set your account "Full control" of the files in the folder?

I have a folder with music in it on my desktop. It is set to read only. My P2P program can't access the files to play them. I am guessing it is because the folder is set to read only. Everytime I uncheck the read only property, it re-checks itself. I followed the instruction on the microsoft help page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549 but I must be doing something wrong. Here is what I did:

1. start-run-cmd.exe
2. the command prompt box pops up saying " c:\documents and settings\kristin> "
3. I copy and paste " attrib /? " so it looks like this " c:\documents and settings\kristin>attrib /? "
4. hit enter
5. a list of what all the different commands do pops up and under the list " c:\documents and settings\kristin> "
6. I type " attrib -r -s C:\Documents and Settings\Kristin\Desktop\My Shared Folder "
7. a message pops up that says paramater format not correct

When I type in exactly what the microsoft page has " attrib -r -s c:\test " it says the file not found. All I am doing is changing the test folder to the folder I want to change. I copied and pasted everything exactly from the microsoft help page. I cannot figure out why this is not working. Please help!

Answer:can't uncheck read only - attrib -r doesnt work

Hello Kristin,

A Read-Only attribute on a music file should not prevent you from just playing it, since you're not changing it, so may this isn't the cause of your problem.
All folders in XP are marked Read-Only. It doesn't (really) mean anything.
If you want to go ahead with the attrib command (you've got the syntax wrong there), move the folder to your C: drive
In the command window, type
attrib -r C:\foldername\*.* /s
Where foldername is the name of your music folder.

Is this safe? Or is there some way to restore read only settings to default for C:\Users\MyUsername?
Thanks a lot in advance.

'dmwu.exe' Is accessing my public network through Windows Firewall and I can't uncheck it.
To the best of my knowledge 'dmwu.exe' has something to do with 'incredimail'
and the digital signature is from 'Perion Network'.  Path is C:\Windows\System32\dmwu.exe

Virus scans prove uneventful, as nothing is detected.
I think it's strange that dmwu.exe has protected itself from being denied access
to my public network.

What should I do?  Delete the file?  Leave it alone?  Thanks.

Hi. Although my laptop only takes 7 seconds to start up, I took a screen shot of everything thats starts up at start up. All is checked. Which of these can I uncheck if you can tell me please. Thx Or may be easier to tell me which to keep checked.

Answer:Which of these can I uncheck?

I gave you a link to Clean Up Factory Bloatware which explains that you don't need anything checked in msconfig>Startup and Msconfig>Services (after Hiding All MS Services) except your AV which should be a lightweight one like Microsoft Security Essentials. All others are freeloaders on your system that can wait to start, or Toshiba bloatware which duplicates much better features built into Win7.

Please read over and follow the these steps I provided to mitigate the Toshiba bloatware, including the other link for how to get the best possible install for Win7 which leaves out the corrupting Toshiba bloatware.

Windows Vista Home Premium has been through extensive clean up. There are no signs of any malware. Have tried to make alterations to these registry keys which control proxy settings to no avail. Hello! And for my first post here, I have a problem to present to the forums. I have had a basic Vista desktop since around 07, which has been shut down for quite some time in 2009 and not turned back on until recently. When I restarted it, I found that I could no longer read file extensions, and when I go into Folder Options and uncheck "hide known file extensions" it simply resets.

Does this relate to a glitch in the Vista system? I've scanned the computer numerous times with virus scanners, and never found anything.

Any hep would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:can I uncheck these startup items

couple of things....first off, you should remove entries from start up from services as opposed to msconfig....bit moret thorough and all.....to access services, hit start > run > services.msc

secondly, do a google search for black viper. He had the one of the most comprehensive sites I've ever seen regarding start up apps, which appear, which appear in safe mode, which have what dependencies, etc....that way YOU can make the decision of whta to have start and what not to have start.

his site is down, but I am sure you can find a replica.

I use Windows 7 and the following are the facts:I cannot uncheck the Next-generation Java Plug-in checkbox from the control panel Java Advanced tab - it is grayed outI have Java version 6 update 20 in my Programs files folder and - I cannot uncheck the Next-generation Java Plug-in checkbox from the javacpl file - it is grayed outI have Java version 6 update 22 in my Programs files (x86) folder - I can uncheck the Next-generation Java Plug-in from the javacpl file

Answer:help to uncheck the Next-generation Java

I would suggest that the one in Java version 6 update 20 is not relevant due to having installed a higher version which is the one that is relevant. When I install a higher version then via their programs folder the older versions no longer contain the control panel file/s.Try going to Start, Control Panel and properly use the Java Control panel from there as it is designed. My mom used to say that if it hurts to do something specific then stop doing that specific something.HTHBryan

I rebooted my PC (running Windows 7 Home) and upon start up Steam gave me a warning that it was running in compatibility mode. I go to the executable and I find that compatibility mode is checked and greyed out so I cannot change it (it is set to Windows Vista for some reason).

I have never seen this before and a search has not turned up anything useful (yet). Any ideas on what I can try?

EDIT: Never mind, I had to click "Change settings for all users." and then change the compatibility mode within that window. Strange that it did that by itself...

Answer:uncheck promt for password no workie

I assume you have done a restart, just to make sure the uncheck has every chance to take effect.

If it is really prompting for password after standby, I don't know what is happening; but if the computer is activating a screen saver before it goes into standby, the prompt may be for coming out of screen saver.

hey guys,

I am trying to back up my NTFS hard drive so I can reformat it, but I am getting permissions errors on alot of files. The errors say I'm not allowed to access certain files because they are protected. I brought my hard drive back to my main computer where I am administrator and have permission to access the files.
Then I noticed that read-only box was filled with a square. So I unchecked it and told it to propagate through the folder.
After it is done I select ok then go back to properties and find that the square is back again!

I thought it was because the whole drive had certain permissions that had to be changed. I went into the security tab and selected the admin name and saw that it had full control and everything was checked. Then I checked the "replace owner on subcategories and objects" box and it runs through the files changing permissions, but after it finishes the box unchecks itself!

I'm not sure why this is happening or what else to try.

Does any one have any ideas?

thanks in advance

Answer:file permissions box uncheck themselves automatically

Possibly .You are talking about 2 hard drives, with two sets of permissions. The permissions on your hard drive to be backed up...belong to a different system than the one on which the hard drive is now attached. I believe that, to change those permissions...you have to set new permissions from the new system.I would try giving permissions to All Users for that drive...from the system it is currently installed on. That should allow you to move files to another drive. An alternative that my accomplish the same, How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421 FWIW: That read-only box is insignificant, has nothing to do with permissions. That attribute is easily changed when necessary.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549All of which forces me to ask...just how are you trying to backup this hard drive? The easiest course of action, IMO, would be to just clone the partition/drive.Louis

Seems like you have one suspicious application on your computer that automatically setup proxy connection. That application could be malware.

Answer:Shop to win malware at startup - can't uncheck

Hi,It is actually your SpyBot teatimer that is interfering here and restores the shoptowin entry in msconfig. So I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system. If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions. Then you should be able to delete the shoptowin entry. We'll do this with a regfix, since, when you do this via msconfig, you disable it, while the shoptowin entry can actually get deleted instead. But first of all, delete the following folder if still present:C:\Program Files (x86)\Shop To WinThen, do the following to deal with the orphaned shoptowin entries:Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)REGEDIT4[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{8e51683a-ea9d-4127-ae14-a13294ff6f7c}][HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]"Shop To Win"=-Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.Let me know if that solved your problem.

Are you saying that if you left-click on the check marks they aren't removed? You may find some answers here:

Disabling a specific Action Center message via script or registry key

Disable Action Center via registy key?

If you decide to edit the registry please create a new restore point or system image or export the registry and save it just in case something goes wrong.

Dear All:

Please help!

As I was transferring some files to my extension hard drive today, I noticed that the file extension names were showing as I renamed some of the files. I went to the view tab on my windows explorer and tried to uncheck the file extension names option but it won't uncheck.

And then I tried to go to folder options and checked hide known files and still no go.

I then googled my problem and I was told to download something called a VBS file in order to solve this issue. I downloaded it but then I keep getting a script error and I'm unable to run it.

I know seeing file extension names is not a big deal but it is not my preference. It's actually an annoyance to me.

I would be grateful if you could help resolve this once and for all.

My OS is Windows 8.1. Originally it only had Windows 8 but I updated it to 8.1 when it became available.
MY computer is an Asus K450C with a 64 bit operating system and a 4 GB ram.

I hope you can help. Thank you.

I have a list with a choice column in SharePoint. It's set to multi select check boxes. But I want the default choice to be blank. Otherwise it automatically selects the first option in my list. Is there a way to do this? I've tried experimenting with blank ASCII characters which I've made work for dropdown lists, but haven't figured out how to do something similar in this situation.

Answer:SharePoint uncheck multi select by default in list

I would be tempted to make the first option as the word Blank, No Option Selected or something like that.

I added a column with a Choice menu, added 'display choice using check box' (which, by the way, I hate this format). In the type each choice list I made the first one blank and at 'default' value it was blank. When I saved the 'blank choice' went away but default remained blank.

I made a text file Hidden when I created it. Now I want it to be Unhidden but the option is grayed out. (It's a desktop.ini I learned how to make so I can have folder backgrounds in XP like I used to have in 98 SE - it works great, by the way!) I tried deleting it and remaking it again from scratch. But the option is still grayed out. I've made tons of these desktop.inis for lots of other folders. They all allow Unhidden with no problem - this is the only one that is grayed out.

It's just a couple of clicks to un-hide it...but it's just getting my goat why I can't do it.

Answer:[SOLVED] Option to uncheck my Hidden file grayed out

The +s attribute likely got set somehow as well.

Unset them both from the command prompt: attrib "c:\path\file" -h -s

Hi,

We searching for a solution which we encounter in our environment.
When enable Password Cache in Internet Explorer, the checkbox of 'remember my credentials' is automatically checked. If we disable this Password Cache, with registry value DisablePasswordCache the checkbox is unchecked. Now we like to enable Password Cache
but with default 'remember my credentials' unchecked. Does anyone know a solution for this issue ?
Thanks

Answer:Uncheck remember my credentials checkbox with policies/registry setting

Hi,
How do you enable password cache in ie? Based on my test, I can't make the checkbox automatically checked when enable password cache in Internet Explorer.
To check if these passwords or credentials are saved, you can navigate to Credential manager from control panel.

dont know when this happened.. havent used bluetooth for a bit.. running windows 7 pro, 64 bit, on an HP all in one 200.
purchased a set of bluetooth speakers (creative)... and tried to hook it up. strange thing is, i can find the speakers when pairing, and they show up under Devices and Printers... but when i double click on the Creative speaker icon, i get the following error message:
An error occurred when initializing this operation. Try restarting your computer and/or your bluetooth adapter.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled via device manager my bluetooth radio...
another odd thing is, that i am unable to turn adapter on, if i right click on the BT icon in the taskbar and choose, Turn Adapter On, and click somewhere else, and right click it again, it still says Turn adapter on (not off).. .so when i open up settings... i see it checked by "Turn off the bluetooth adapter"... i uncheck it, hit apply/ok.. come back, and it is still checked....
strange. how was i able to pair up my BT speakers with my pc if in fact the radio is off?
someone help please, i have scoured the net... but no love
thanks

Hi, i am looking for a policy that will allow me to uncheck 'display intranet sites in compatibility view' without graying out the option to recheck it if a user needs the option in the future. So far the only option i found under Computer
Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Compatibility View/Turn on Internet Explorer Standards Mode for Local Intranet would gray out the option to recheck the box.

Hello,

I am trying to install a driver for the Epson perfection 1200U on my grandpa's new windows 8 PC. Problem is that the scanner is too old and epson doesnt provide a driver for this scanner for windows 8. But I found a how to guide on this and the instructions are great, and it seems to work for everyone else but I cant figure out how to uncheck "show compatible hardware" in device manager when you are trying to update drivers on a specific device.

I get there by right clicking on the device, selecting properties, "browse my computer for driver software," then "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then after that the window that appears does not have an option to uncheck "show compatible hardware." And so I can't continue

Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Thanks in advance for any feedback

Hi.

I have my PS4 and Xbox One connected to my second screen with HDMI and from my screen I have 3,5 audio cable from screen audio output to motherboards soundcards line-in and in windows I listen to line-in device.

It works when i activate option "listen to this device" in control panel until I restart computer.

If I have option "listen to this device" checked when I restart it won't work until I uncheck that option and restart again or restart audio services.

I have two soundcards one on motherboard (Realtek) and Creative Soundblaster Z and sound output seems to work because I can listen to music and watch videos but I can't hear anything from line-in.

I have installed new drivers and clean install on windows 10

Answer:No audio with "listen to this device" until reboot with option uncheck

It seems that updating to newest build of windows 10 from windows update helped... I should have tried that too before posting here.

I have been fighting this problem for years. I have an unanswered post on this subject back in 6/20/09.

I'm running XP, I want to stop being asked if I really want to send a file to the recycle bin. All over the net, everybody says just right click on Recycle Bin and uncheck the box. Well I can't because it is "grayed out".

I thought it might be because my C: drive was fat32. I just converted and it to NTFS and that didn't help.

There must be someplace in the registry that can change that. Anybody know where? If not, anybody know how to find out what all those registry enteries mean and do?

Thanks In Advance
Pete

Answer:Can't Uncheck Recycle Bin "Display delete confirmation dialog"

Most likely an Admin and/or Group Policy thing - try the steps listed here - click 'Disabled' in the Admin Templates section.

I need to deploy IE 11 in my enterprise with the Trusted Sites setting "Require server verification" unchecked.
I am using IEAK 11 to build a custom IE Install.  I have imported the security zones in IEAK and when the custom IE 11 is installed on a client, the correct sites are added to Trusted Sites, but the security setting doesn't work.
So, I unpacked the BRANDING.CAB file and took a look at the seczones.inf and seczrsop.inf
I noticed that while seczones.inf for HKLM listed
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\2",Flags,0x10001,43,00,00,00

HKCU showed
HKCU,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\2",Flags,0x10001,47,00,00,00

Value "47" will leave the box checked.  I was able to hand modify the seczones.inf file that gets baked into the BRANDING.CAB file to make sure it says "43" for both HKCU and HKLM.  43 hex corresponds to decimal value 67

Similarly, in Seczrsop.inf I needed to change the "Flags=71" to "Flags=67" for HKCU...
So now every instance of that Flags registry item in my BRANDING.CAB has been set to 67(decimal) which corresponds to the box for zone 2 (Trusted Sites) being unchecked.

When I deploy this customized IE 11 install to non-domain joined computers, I STILL have the box "Require server verification" checked.  Looking in the HKCU registry for the value, I see the value set to 47(... Read more

Hello!
I am writing a vb script that automatically sets up proxy server options in the Internet Explorer. These settings are linked in the registry under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings". For example the Proxy Servers can be found in the edit string "ProxyServer".
Now I am searching the registry setting for the option "Automatically detect settings" which can be manually activated in the Internet Explorer under Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings. (I dont know if they are in the same key name like the other settings)

I am using Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer 6.0

If you know a different way to change this options with scripts I am glad about to hear it.

- Thank you very much

PS: My english is probably not perfect but excuse that I am german

Hai,

it seems i have infected with a virus or some malicious item.
It checks the options 'Hide Extension for known file types' and 'Hide protected OS files' to allow it self to be hidden.

i tried to uncheck the above two options to find the file which causing the problem. after uncheck and say ok, it again rechecks the options.

Please help over come this problem.

Answer:Unable To Uncheck 'hide Extension For Known...' & 'hide Protected Operating ....'

What OS (Win XP/2000, etc) are you using? What type of anti-virus are you using? Have you performed any anti-spyware scans? Have you tried doing your scans in "SAFE MODE"?You need to start there first. If you don't have any anti-virus or anti-malware programs see BC's List of Virus & Malware Resources and at least scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. In #4 there is a list of several free online anti-virus scans which you can perform. I would also recommend that you download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users.

Until today, I've never had the problem with the "Keep Me Signed In" button in Firefox when trying to login into Yahoo Email, however, something must have changed.

The settings in my browser which are under Tools > Options > Privacy > History are no longer settable. If I select "Use Custom Setting" there is an option to accept 3rd party cookies which until yesterday had the option "Until I close Firefox". That option is now grayed out and with this graying out, I cannot load the login page without getting the checkmarked "Keep Me Signed In" button for Yahoo Mail.

I've cleared all the cache, history, cookies, etc., then ran CCleaner and then started Firefox again, but haven't had any success getting rid of the Remember Me button. I didn't change any of my settings, so I don't know why this is not clearing properly.

The Yahoo forums and Help haven't offered anything helpful. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Answer:can't uncheck "Keep me signed in" in yahoo logon

Hey Norgates, try clearing the history in this manner. In FF click History, then click Clear Recent History in the drop down box, then when the option box pops up click the arrow and chose Everything then put a check in every box the click Clear Now, then close FF and open Ccleaner then under Applications FireFox, check all boxes and clean, then open FF and try it now.

I check the box at the top of my mail in yahoo mail to check all the boxes but since I installed Ie 10 I cant uncheck the boxes individually anymore

Answer:cant uncheck mail in yahoo mail since running Ie 10

roll back to IE9 if that worked okay. You shouldn't be using IE10 yet as it's still not a finished product except on Windows 8.

i keep encounter this auto restart error therefore i decided to uncheck the automatic restart checkbox in system properties to get a BSOD so that i know what happen, but even if i uncheck it, my cpu still auto restart without generating a BSOD

i also checked my windows folder but there are no \Windows\Minidump in it

Answer:Auto restart even if uncheck automatic restart

Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service - then post the link to it.
Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): Set MiniDump

OE (version 6.0 running on a Pentium III & Internet Explorer 6.0) will not allow me to view/open attachments and I cannot access or uncheck the box under Tools-Options-Security-"Do not allow attachments...." which seems to be the problem according to other threads here.

Any suggestions?

Answer:OE "Do Not Allow Attachments" won't uncheck

Make sure that no programs are currently running, including Outlook Express

Click Start, then Run

In the Run dialog box, type "regedit" into the "Open:" field without quotes and click "OK"

Once REGEDIT is open, click the plus (+) symbol by HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Click the plus (+) symbol by SOFTWARE
Click the plus (+) symbol by Microsoft

Click on "Outlook Express" once to highlight it

In the right hand pane, double-click "BlockExeAttachments"

For "Value Data" enter 0 and then click "OK"

Exit REGEDIT and restart your machine

After your machine restarts, open Outlook Express and go to Tools > Options and then to the Security tab. The option "Do not allow attachments to be opened or saved that could potentially be a virus" can be checked or unchecked it based on your preference.

Have Windows 98, OE 5.0. Fellow sent me Email with attachment that I had requested. End of attachment is .lwp. I tried to open it and was asked (computer screen) which program to use. I selected Word and just as I clicked on it, saw the check in the box "always use this program". Too late. Word did not open it so that it could be read and now it automatically goes to Word. How do I undo that "permanent" choice of Word? Remove the check mark? That's my main question. Another fellow told me that .lwp is Lotus Word Pro. Says I can get free trial download online, but is 10MB. My ISP would not keep me connected for that long. Rarely can I get connection that will permit 2MB download. Any comments on this? Thanks for helping me understand a bit more about these machines.

Answer:How to "uncheck" a selection?

find the .lwp file in your folders with windows explorer
highlight it with the mouse
hold the shift key down and right click on the file
the open with dialogue box will open and you can associate the file with a different program
- watch where you put your checkmarks

timed out connection
- check your modem settings in dun (dial up network) to see if you can extend the session at all read through this to see if it's any help
- could also look (ie use www.google.com) for a download accelerator that can resume downloads, just watch out for spyware included with it (get adaware from lavasoft)
- could also use a ftp client (software) that can resume downloads if lotus has a ftp site listed
(if you live anywhere in/near a large city, see if there's a lotus office or major reseller/partner - suck up nice and you could probably get the whole damn smartsuite cd - they give em away like mad to clients)

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering something...is there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back home...my guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX
C'YA

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Whenever I boot up my VAIO (VGN-SZ750N) laptop an all-blue screen appears only momentarily, so that there's no time to read any of what is clearly a very wordy warning in white typescript that fills the whole screen. How can I stop this long enough to read it and take whatever action it recommends?

then, something happens that may be related to this . . .

soon afterward, a boxed message appears saying: "System has recovered from a serious error . . . " Clicking on this results in a huge number of figures that would challenge anybody who attempted to write them down.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

HANDLE hEventLog = OpenEventLog(hostIP, SECURITY_EVENT_SOURCE);
Check hEventLog not NULL here.
ReadEventLog(hEventLog, ...);
ReadEventLog never returns (stops) sometimes. It blocks thread.

These API also never return:
GetNumberOfEventLogRecords(hEvent, ...)
GetOldestEventLogRecord(hEvent, ...)
Could you help what happened on there, never return? How can I check further?

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.
Confused...

Fred
