How can I transfer my entire harddrive contents to another harddrive?

Question: How can I transfer my entire harddrive contents to another harddrive?

Hi all!

I recently purchased a new WD Cavier Black with the 32 MB cache. I would like to transfer all my HD contents [including windows vista ultimate] from my older WD 16MB cache HD to this brand spanking new WD Cavier Black HD.

Is it possible to do this without flaws and so that it will work exactly as before?

If yes, can you direct me to the correct information to do this please?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

The system in which I would like to do this has these components:

Thermaltake M9 Cool Case
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit w/SP1
Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
Intel Q6600
Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro
Infinity ATX PSU 600W
4GB DDR2 Crucial 800 MHz
E-GeForce 8600GTS DDR3 256MB
Memorex X16 Dual Layer DVD
Western Digital SATA 320 GB
Maxtor SATAII 1TB

Thank you,

Soar

Preferred Solution: How can I transfer my entire harddrive contents to another harddrive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just recently bought a used computer to replace the one I had which died on me. For some reason, my old harddrive isn't being recognized as the main hard drive when I remove the new one and plug my old one in. Both harddrives are recognized when I have my old one plugged up with the extra power and IDE cable, so I was wondering if it is possible to copy the contents of my old drive to the new one and have it where it transfers all of my installed software over without having to reinstall everything?

Answer:Harddrive to harddrive data transfer?

So what you tried to do is get WinXP to boot after it was installed on a different computer. This usually does not work well unless the Motherboard onthe new computer is almost identical to the old one. At the very least you would want to uninstall all drivers that were istalled as part of the old motherboard then do a repair installation of Windows XP. Then again if your installation of Windows is an OEM version of Windows it is not legal to use it on a second computer even if the second computer is a replacement for the first. If this is a retail copy of Windows then you can do it. You would need also the drivers for the new system.. As far as transfering installed programs from one hard drive to another and have them work properly if at all, it is not likely that you will succeed in doing so as installed programs make changes to the registry so that windows will know where to go look for the files to operate these programs. Just transferring the programs will not make the changes needed to your registry that an installation would make.

Buying a new desktop computer. So I literally simply want to copy my entire hard drive to an external hard drive. All the files on my HD are about 30 GB transferring to a new external with 1 TB of space. Nothing on it yet. What's the quickest, simplest way to do this? This way I know I have every single file from my computer stored without missing anything.

This way on new desktop I have all my settings/bookmarks, etc. for browsers, all files saved.....

Doesn't need to be bootable from the external, just trying to make a copy so i know i have everything. What would you guys use for this? Thanks.

Answer:Simplest way to backup entire harddrive to an external

Just copy and paste them. Use guides not only available here but on other sites as well to export your bookmarks so you can just import them. For the rest of your personal files just move them to the drive. Sicne making a direct image wont do you any good. This is going to be your best bet. Use something like SyncToy.

Hi,

I was using my PC and everything froze, then all of the icons on my desktop disappeared (became hidden) and all that was on the screen was my wallpaper. Suddenly I received multiple pop ups stating that "Windows -Delayed Write Failed" and that my PC's RAM was low and the system was not able to save any data. It also ran some scan detector showing all the problems with my PC. There was something about HDD error that the scan detector mentioned.

I had no choice but to restart my PC. Once I restarted my PC my wallpaper disappeared (now I have a black screen) and all of my files/programs were no where to be found since the virus hides all of them and made all of them inaccessible.

I tried to reboot my PC again and in the process of starting up in Safe Mode the computer has the same effect as normal mode. Hidden Files. The hard drive recognizes there is file but when trying to access any files they are hidden. Programs are as well even in the start up program. But they are located in control panel. Please Help!!! I have done the preparation guide. GMER and DDS ran with no issues.

I'm getting a new PC, and if I buy another copy of Windows 7 it will cost me another ?80 for something I bought only 1 year ago.

Could I do it by transferring a hard drive with windows 7 on it to my new PC?

Please help, would be very greatful

Answer:Can I transfer a harddrive with w7 on it, to another pc?

New PCs usually come with a Windows installation. I assume your new PC will not have Windows for some reason.

Are you building it yourself?

Do you have an existing Windows installation disk of any kind? What kind?

If your current PC has an OEM version of Windows, you will likely run into activation issues if you simply move the hard drive into the new PC--because the new PC has a different motherboard.

I have a older compaq running Win98. Someone has been kind enough to give me a computer with more memory and other stuff. I'm not hip with all the jargon, sorry. Anyway, the newer one is also running win98, but doesn't have all the programs that mine has. I want to put what's on the old one onto the newer one. Someone told me that doing it using floppy discs would take a long time. I would like to know if there is an easier way. Windows 98 was already installed on both computers so ther is no cd.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Hi,

I recently had a very strong magnet. The magnet was then stuck (By a child) to my laptop. I then had errors on boot. I tried reinstalling Vista with the restore disk, but I recieved "Error - Cannot set temp path".

I today purchased a 250gb harddrive (a upgrade from my 120gb), and then Vista installed fine.

Now it runs fine, but I get bluescreens after random amounts of time, with errors involving a windows file. Unfortunately, I don't have the bluescreen error details at the moment. I have however uploaded the 3 minidumps from the 3 occasions.

Is it possible that another part of the computer was damaged by the magnet? Ram?

Thank's,

Tom

Welcome to the Windows Eight Forums, Cian.

Is this an OEM or did you install Windows 8 on the 150 GB drive? And, are you dual booting?

BTW, could you go back to your profile and give us your complete system setup? Brand name, HDDs, RAM, Video Card, etc. We can help you much better if we know your system specs.

Ok. My dad is re-installing Windows XP because his got 'fried'. I want to re-install this operating system, or OS so he can keep just his music and photos. He has several irreplaceable photos that he wants to keep.

Now, since his operating system is fried, he can only make it to the Start Menu and then his computer just keeps rebooting.

We tried taking it to a professional PC place and they just said the OS crashed and we would have to replace it.

So how can I transfer the music and photos to my hard drive temporarily so that he can keep his photos and music? I would try to put two hard drives on his computer, which is like, 10 years old, but i'm not to handy-dandy with the hardware stuff, although I am computer savvy I am considered a pro to my classmates in middle school. I recently just got a new laptop that's running windows 7 to replace my old one that has XP. The problem is I can't seem to figure out the best way to transfer literally 100GB's worth of media files from my old laptop to my new one. It's all just in one file on my desktop.

I don't have a removable hard drive or the money for one, all I have is an 8GB USB which would take too much time to even bother. So I was thinking of using a network, but I have no idea how to use one.

Any ideas? Thanks! I appreciate it a lot! :)

Network them as you said.

Share the XP c drive and then just copy paste everything.

Networking is simple using any router, but can done without one in an ad-hoc setup:

I have pretty old secondary hard drive (11 years) and currently in power settings there is an option to put hard drive in sleep mode if it's been idle for X minutes. Is it a good idea to disable this setting and let the harddrive spin all the time, since as I know, frequently enabling/disabling hard drives makes more damage than never putting harddrive to sleep.

Answer:Harddrive health with harddrive auto-stop in idle

You should consider buying a new drive to replace that one, then copy your data over before it dies

A tower has the front panel start button failure- anattempted repair lasted no time at all - it pwas decided to simply transfer the primary harddrive to a spare tower with mostherboard and optical drives. The first problem was trying to get LAN tto connect. It failed. Then it occured to me me that the systen needed the 'New' mobo utilitiesObtained the disc only to find the Optical drives[there are two] are not being recognised. So are optical drives reliant on the Mobo utilities disk?Is not the Optical driver built into to Mobo firmware otherwise how does one load a system disk?

Answer:Harddrive transfer- peripherals problem

That's odd for the optical drives not to be recognised by default. If they're IDE drives, do you have the correct master/slave jumper settings? Did you remember to connect power to them from the PSU? Are the necessary parameters in the BIOS correct? Set them to default, save & reboot. If that doesn't help, reset the CMOS & try again. G

The error message i get when transferring is " This is no longer located in C:\blah\blah verify items location and try again"

What does this mean? The file is definantly there and has always been there and works on Vista completely fine so my question is why wont it transfer across?

Thanks for help

Answer:Solved: cant transfer to external harddrive?

I suggest that you give it another try once you reconnect the drive again.

I have personally plugged in a flash drive, and tried to copy files over to it too soon before the computer had settled on what to do with it. Before I knew it, the drive letter for it disappeared, and appeared again, usually as the same drive letter. Once or so, it didn't assign a drive letter for it at all, and when using the Safely Remove Hardware feature, it showed it as USB Mass Storage Device and nothing else. So all I had to do what reinsert it.

I'm not really clear on what your doing or if your getting an error message.

If everything is Ok and no error. See this link.

Hi, I've made a few posts here trying to discuss some issues i was having. I think I've cleared a few of them up with ccleaner and its registry settings. To finish the job I've done the malware removal procedure and I am going to attach the logs...hopefully someone can take a peek and see if there is anything i am missing. I want to get this computer clean so when I transfer everything over to a new hard drive , everything is as good as it can be.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Virus scan log for harddrive transfer

Just read another post where a MGlogs.zip was requested...just in case my log.txt isnt what is needed I"m going to attack that here.

EDIT: I'm not sure if that MGlogs.zip is the right file or not...I've done the malware removal procedure before...

When I check the date created on that file..it seems to be from 2008...

I'm sorta confused...I ran all malware removal tools from the correct locations. I hope this .zip is the correct one.

EDIT2: Ok.... I know I'm looking like an idiot. I suspect that I didnt run the last program in the sequence...please forgive my stupidity. Thought I had done all the steps...damn you garage door spring! Your breaking messed me up!

I'll run the final step and attach the proper log...thanks for your patience.

Answer:Solved: transfer pictures from ext harddrive

I use Irfanview as my System default viewer and basic Image Editor ... It's not a Browser/Organizer.
I prefer to know where my pics are and not depend on a Browser/Organizer .. And do it manually.
I have too many pics in several internal HDDs and several externals (backups)

I'd just select the pics I want and Copy/Paste (Drag/Drop) them to a working folder on my Desktop.
Then I'd batch process them (in Irfanview) to a new size and send them to the Photo Frame.

You should be able to use Picasa .. Once the pics are in a working folder on your Desktop.

On my Vista Ultimate, I'm replaceing my only harddrive with another(both are hooked up internally for now) and returning the old drive.

I need to transfer my complete system from old HD to new HD, files, folders, games, registry etc., a complete clone. I was told to just drag and drop old hd into the new drive then remove the old HD and install the new in it's place.

Will this work?? i.e If I do as advise, and once the new HD is my boot hd, will my system info, games etc. be the same as when the old drive was my boot drive once I restart my system???

If not is there a way to do this without buying any software? If not, what would be the best program to do this correctly?

Thanks for any info

Ron

Answer:complete transfer of old harddrive to new drive

Drag and Drop won't work. Most all hard drive manufacturers offer a utility for your needs

I recently rebooted my computer, but i first loaded all my files into an external harddrive. Now that my computer is rebooted, when I try to bring my files in from my external harddrive, it says "Cannot Create or Copy: Access Denied--Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use". I can't figure out how to move my files, I have done this in the past and it worked perfectly. please help me!

Answer:transfer of files from external harddrive

My first thought would be perhaps the drive has an write-protect swich or parameter set and your trying to Cut and Paste rather than copy.

When you say reboot I guess you mean you formatted the system and have reinstalled Windows fresh?

Can I install XP on one harddrive from say PC #1 and then use that harddrive on PC #2 and it will run XP

Answer:Install windows xp on one harddrive than transfer to another PC

It is possible, but there is a very high chance that you will have to re-activate XP when you move the hard drive over. This won't guaranteed to work though due to drivers, etc.

This would violate the license more than likely, unless you are doing this with a retail boxed version of XP.

We have an old sony viao computer running Windows XP (Home ed). It runs safemode's bootstrap for a moment before It gives me a BSOD of UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, with STOP: 0x000000ED(0x873493A0, 0x000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). The disk also makes a lot of clicking noises whenever it moves, so I'm pretty sure it's failing.

Is there any tools to transfer data from the damaged, unbootable harddrive to an external harddrive?

Answer:Harddrive failing, unbootable. want to transfer data

deletesystem32 what you could do is connect this drive as a secondary drive to a desktop and see if it will be detected, from Windows or a live bootable disc. You can also try to connect the drive to a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Cable Adapter you can purchase from tigerdirect or newegg, to see if it be detected so you can try and grab the data off. A lot of the times when a drive is inaccessible there isn't a whole lot that you personally won't be able to do with it.
A mechanical failure means that your drive has broken parts that are preventing it from working?busted drives often make a telltale clicking sound as they futilely attempt to access their files. If you hear that, your data may still be there, but you're not getting it back without calling in the experts

Hello,

I'm trying to tranfer files from my XP pc to my new pc with Windows 7. I know I need W.E.T. and an external HD. I found this one that I wanted to get:

Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Canvio 320GB USB 2.0 Raven Black Portable External Hard Drive E05A032CAU2XK

However, when I started reading reviews on it on Amazon.com...one of the users stated that he could not use it for the transfer since the preloaded software isn't compatible windows 7, even though the website for the product says the harddrive is.

So my question is which external hard drive (brand or type) do I have to choose to do this?

Answer:Which external harddrive do I use for Windows Easy Transfer(XP to W7)?

I did it using a USB 32Gb flash drive since I doubt you'll need more than 32Gb that should work as long as you have downloaded and installed Windows Easy Transfer on your XP PC.

transferring a mirror image of old win 7 laptop to a new really fast win 7 laptop - question is: will all the programs work without reloading programs (mirror image)... this will have a new harddrive (the harddrive is failing)... a couple of the programs are from friends or no longer available and I don't want to lose access ? any ideas ?

Answer:mirror transfer, will programs still work on new harddrive

There's no certainty that an installation will work in a different computer. Windows is set up according to the hardware in the original system. There is also the question of license and activation, if the original installation is OEM Windows the license is only valid for the original computer, changing major hardware usually requires re-activation and it will no longer be a legitimate Windows install. This licensing problem does not apply if the Windows is a full consumer version (boxed or download purchase), but can still be expected to need re-activation.

After having a security chip problem with my Lenovo and being unable to turn the computer on, I was told I would have to reimage my computer.  So I transferred all my files to an external harddrive.  Now two problems have arisen 1) the My Pictures folder is gone--I can't find it anywhere, and I don't know where it would be2) certain microsoft word documents only have shortcuts, but the shortcuts don't connect to the files.  I can't find the files anywhere.   I've made "all files visible" and i don't know what to do.  The files I can't access are really important to me.  Any help would be appreciated. -Andrew

Answer:Files Missing from External Harddrive after Transfer

First off, what model thinkpad do you have? What OS are you using? My pictures folder is located in the following directories... C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXXXX\My Documents\My Pictures ----------in Windows XPC:\Users\XXXXXXX\My Pictures--------------------------------------------------------in Windows Vista Unless you changed the default directory. For the Word documents, did you have them on a flash drive? If you created shortcuts for files that are on a flash drive, when you open the shortcut it won't find the file if the flash drive isn't inserted in a USB port. Also ensure that you didn't delete the files beforehand.

Is it possible to use files and settings transfer wizard or something similar off a secondary harddrive?

If so, how?

Thanks

Answer:Files and Settings transfer from Secondary Harddrive

No, not unless you had already previously ran the File and Settings Transfer wizard when the original OS was running and have the file saved somewhere on that drive. The XP transfer wizard will only run within a functional OS. I'm also not aware of anything that would do this for you. If you need something from a 2nd HD you have slaved in your current system, you'll just need to copy it over manually. Unfortunately anything in the registry (ie. network drives, printers, etc), can't be copied this way. Files only.

Hi guys, im looking for some help with my enermax external harddrive storage

i put in it a 80gb pata normal hdd which works fine when i connect it to my mobo but in my external storage it just disconnects after some time (10-15 s generally) with high transfer rate. I tried slower transfer rate and it worked.

I dont know what to increase or decrease... the powersupply is externe (power plugs/ac adapter) so i dont think its the prob.

btw, can someone tell me how to slow down my usb2 to usb 1.1, so that i can still have some transfer even if its slow.

thx

Airwin

Answer:external harddrive disconnects with high transfer

I'm pretty sure you can set the USB speed to 1.1 in the BIOS. Just look around for a bit and I'm sure you will find it. My setting on my Asus A7N8X is under the "Advanced Bios Options" tab or something close to that.

My T400 (bought last July) harddrive dead on me Sunday. I called helpcenter and received a replacement harddrive today. It was very fast. They asked me to return the old one. I have a concern about the security of my old harddrive. There are lots of personal information (data and files) on the old harddrive. If I return the old one, is there a chance my personal data be leaked? Is there any way I can delete the data and file on the old harddrive? I have no access to my old harddrive now. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you for your time.

Answer:New harddrive from lenovo to replace my dead old harddrive

It will almost certainly be trashed, but you can't be 100% sure.  If you have a big magnet around, you could set the old one on it for a while - that should do the trick.

I am currently backing up weekly to a small external drive.. it is a small 20gigger. It has taken about 1 year or so to fill up. Now i am thinking long term.. i am considering purchasing a "network harddrive", one that is between 500gigz to 1tb. There is a smaller/more affordable Seagate external drive.. but it is not a "network harddrive".. it has 1.5tb.. versus a network drive that is about 2tb but it cost about 314.

My question is, thinking long term.. and considering the setup i have.. which is a regular PC acting as a server.. what should i get?

Your suggestions are appreciated

Thank you

Ok, so I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this as it involves both hardware and software, but the issue began because of hardware. Here is my question.

My laptop harddrive (a Western Digital Scorpio Blue, 320GB HDD) is in the middle of failure. The problem is bad sectors and it seems that WD's own utility can't fix the problem and their support stated I need a new drive. They are out of stock of all mobile drives at the moment, but I just so happen to have 640GB Toshiba HDD from a completely different laptop. My question is, is it possible to use the System Image disc I made when I first got my laptop to install my windows and apps and drivers on a completely new, and different, harddrive? Does the harddrive have to have windows already installed on it for it to work?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi everyone i am currently having problems trying to tranfer files to my internal harddrive it stated that i have the drive write protected. I have changed permission to full control..both under properties and also under hardrive management but the only thing I have not been able to change is special permissions.. i have also tried changing all inherited children too but these have not helped.. also .. I do have a couple of usb harddrives connected at the same time .. and this issue seem to occurs only when there are a number external drives attached..

Answer:harddrive locked unable to transfer file even after changing to full c

I had this same problem with an external WD drive.
If your drive does not have the OS on it, I suggest you copy all data to another drive. Adjust permissions of the copied folders and files.
Then go to Administrator Tools>Computer Manager> Storage>Disk Management
Right click the drive and delete the Volume, then You can format it and copy back the data.

If this is possible what would i need to do that and is it as simple as implied...or should I just give up on the stuff in the old computer??

Answer:Can I remove harddrive from blownup computer & transfer files externally to a new pc?

It is possible and relatively easy.

The simplest way is to open up the new computer and connect the old hard drive in place of the CD-ROM device (the computer is turned off and unplugged of course). It will most likely Just Work (TM) unless you have an unusual computer setup.

My grandma needed more harddrive space on her pc so I installed an 80 gb harddrive on her pc. Right now it's just her slave drive. Her c harddrive is only 20gb, so could I just copy everything on that harddrive to the 80gb and make that the master hard drive and the old one the slave? Or would that cause problems? I want to do this so she can continue saving files to her c harddrive instead of a different harddrive.

Answer:Is it posible to change the c harddrive to another harddrive?

You would need to create an image of the the current 20GB drive and map it onto the 80GB drive (most ghosting/imaging utilities allow you to expand the 20GB partition to the full size of the drive without issue). The most common way to go about doing this is with Norton Ghost, but it's not free. There's a few Linux boot disks that can do it as well I believe, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for a free boot disc.

Hi,

This morning a fan in my case was making strange noises (either CPU or GPU fan I think) and so I turned my computer off. I turned it on a little later and the computer was making a really odd clicking noise, so I unplugged each harddrive in turn to see which was causing it. I removed the problem drive (not the one with my XP installation on) and then turned the computer on again. This time it just said could not detect boot disk. I've tried installing XP again, but it gets as far as loading all the setup files and then my PC reboots. The bios still detects the harddrive still in.

The harddrives are just normal IDE 120gb drives (the removed one is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and the one still in is a Barracuda Seagate). I don't understand why the first stopped working (it is at most 6 months old) and why the 2nd one's installation is not detected (it is only a month or 2 old). Up til today, my computer was working perfectly. At the moment my whole computer is useless and the fan is still making the same weird noise occasionally.

Thanks.

Answer:One harddrive died, other harddrive's XP not detected

Welcome to Techspot

It sounds like the Drive you removed was the Primary, so the system can't find an MBR.
Also if that is right did you change the Jumper on the Slave left in your box?
Buy a new Fan, why take a chance ?

hey everyone, my mom's computer isnt working correctly. it turns on but it doesnt boot up. nothing shows up on the monitor. she has very important files and links that are saved to her computer that she needs asap.

my first thought was maybe i could access her computer through the router that we share but other websites told me its impossible without remote connection. and we cannot setup connects or access her computer at the moment.

i would like to know if it would be a good idea to take her harddrive out and put it into another computer. id rather not put it into my computer (just in case something goes wrong) but my brother has a laptop and could we put her harddrive in his? just temporarily so we can get to those files.

is that the best idea? to transfer her harddrive? if so is it okay that its going into a laptop and not a desktop computer....

Answer:transfering harddrive (harddrive problem)

You're best bet it to get a 2.5 Adapter for laptop HDDs then you would take that adapter and connect it to a desktop CD-ROM IDE 2 channel 3.5 Ribbon cable goes into the adapter. There you could transfer files off that drive. That's how it's done in IT repair shop. Below cost $6.99.

can get it off here or try newegg or wherever you want go to a local store to get..

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822153012

and the problem is that the coolmax enclosure wont read the harddrive. I installed it correctly (this is not my first 2.5 external hdd), and the computer detects the harddrive. It says that it is installed and ready to use, but now drive is popping up in "my computer". I dont think that the harddrive is to big for the enclosure, its only 40gb and most enclosures maxes out at 40gb. I could not find out what this enclosure's max compatibility is, so i hope that this is not the problem.

It is not the enclosure that is broken, because i put a different harddrive in the coolmax enclosure and it works. And i tried the Fujitsu hdd in another enclosure and it does not work. So it is definitly the hdd

The harddrive is a ATA-6 and the coolmax enclosure is a IDE ATA 100. I dont know what the 100 stands for, but i dont think that is the problem.

any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a gift for my girlfriend and i really want this to work.

Assuming you reformatted the HD, did the bad sectors show during Formatting or was it some other software that decided you had bad sectors? If it was formatting that disclosed the problem then it may be true. If not it might be a spurious warning and could be ignored.

I am trying to transfer about 80gb of movie files to a usb network hardrive hooked up to my Netgear WNDR3700 dual band router. I have windows 7 ultimate. I have my pc hard wired (gigabit) to the router temporarily to do the transfer but i'm only getting 3.3 MB/s. What gives? I thought I would at least get a lot faster than that? Is the usb network harddrive on the router limiting it to be this slow. I could've swore that usb transfered faster than that.

Any ideas?

Answer:Slow gigabit network transfer to usb network harddrive

3.3MB/s = ~330Mbps
USB2.0 = ~480Mbps

include overhead from both the TCP/IP and USB protocols, and the fact that you will never get a full 480Mbps out of USB, and the number is pretty close.

edit: damnit, I'm a tard. 3.3MB/s = 30.3Mbps. How did I do that?

so connect the USB drive directly to your computer and copy a large file; what kind of transfer speed do you get then?

When I click My Network Places at the top of the list is the drive "acer (c ) Carla Arseneault (carla)". Carla arsenault is the name of my computer.Anyway, It contains all the files of the C drive, which is quite alarming. Its located above Shared Documents file, not in it, then the list goes on to list servers and so on that are on the network. It even has the little hardrive logo by it!

I dont understand why im seeing it there. Was it actually viewable by anyone on the network?
I tried goin into my computer, right clicking properties on the c drive, and then security tab where it warns me about the danger of sharing the root of the driver. I click it, and the box then states "share with other computers on network" or something along those lines is not checked...

Is it just listed there on my local computer, or for everyone to see!?! Perhaps this is there to make it easier to bring stuff to shared documents? Anybody else ever see their c drive on the My network places?

I dont use this computer anymore, so Im not worried about them seeing all the contents now, but am more interested in learning whether it was available to others at any poiint in time from what you can tell with this info (or any other info I havn't looked at)

thanks and all opinions would be appreciated

Hi gurus,

I've got a problem I can't seem to suss out, and I hope you guys can help.

My Windows dialog boxes are too small to display all the text they contain. And as we know, these verdammt boxes are not resizable. Up to now, this has been a minor annoyance, but now it's a major one: it's keeping me from completing the Vista x64 SP2 patch install.

As you can see in the attachments, the window text is just too big. It overflows the sides of the dialog. And because the SP2 EULA screen requires that you view all its text, and I can't, I never get an active "NEXT" button to proceed with the installation. Changing screen res does not help.

I've tried Personalize > Windows Color and Appearance > Open Classic Appearance Properties to reset the Window Text size, but the option to do this is grayed out. I've tried the registry hack found on this board to try and substitute a smaller font, but no go. I've tried several hackware proggies to try and force unresizeable windows to resize, but no joy there either. I've also tried Chris Pirillo's Vista Font Fix to no avail.

System:
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Version 6.0 (Build 6001), Service Pack 1
Dell Studio XPS 435 MT, Core i7 920, 6GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3650 running Catalyst 8.49
Dell Widescreen 2408 WFP in 1920 x 1200 native resolution

Hope someone can figure this out.

I have about 20 photos I want to email to my brother.I don't want to attach these as individual files one by one so I have put them into a folder which amounts to about 7mb. I'm using yahoo to email the folder but when I come to select the folder as an attachment, it displays the folder contents so I have to attach the photos separately. Does anyone know how to email the folder as a single item?

Answer:How to email entire folder contents

Put the photos into a "ZIP" file which can then be attached, although 7MB may be too large to send via email. Some ISPs have an attachment limit as small as 3MB. The alternative is a file transfer service such as "You Send It" click here

Now I have purchased a new Samsung Win 7 64 laptop. Can I just move all the files from the Dell C drive to the Samsung C drive and end up with the same things I had?

Thanks,

TRS

Answer:moving entire C drive contents from one laptop to another

You say the tech was able to "copy the entire C drive".

If that was just an ordinary copy with the mouse, then the only thing you could copy back would be your personal data files, if any of that was on C. Pictures, videos, mp3s, etc.

You could NOT copy back your Windows installation from the old C and expect it to work.

You say "move all the files" from the old to the new. If that includes Windows files, then no. Personal files, yes.

I'm guessing your new machine has Windows, so you wouldn't want to copy the old Windows to it.

You'll have to reinstall your old programs.

I have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Win7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.

The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.

Any advice?

Paul

Answer:How do I copy the entire contents of boot drive?

Why not image your C: partition, but ignore the small system partition? Then restore that image to the partition holding your newly installed Windows system, overwriting it.

The new system partition will remain in place and not be touched by the image restore. You'll probably end up with a non-booting system again, but circumstances will be completely different and you have a much better chance of successfully using the Startup Repair.

Basically it'll just be a matter of "re-detecting" the Windows system and creating a new boot entry for it.

(I actually used precisely this same method - successfully - to manually align my system partition when I was cloning it from HDD to a new SSD.)

I've searched for over a half hour now and can't seem to find a clear answer. I want to view the entire contents of an email (smtp headers, message, source, all that happy stuff)....

I tried to add a registry key, but it didn't work....even after I re-started Outlook7. The only option within an email is to view source, and that only appears to be showing html code.

All I want to see is if the anti-virus we have installed is scanning our incoming emails or not!

Anyone know a quick solution to this? Thanks!

Answer:Solved: How do I view entire message contents in Outlook 7 (smtp, source, etc)

Right click the message, select "Message Options". The "Internet Headers" box at the bottom shows you the whole thing.

I have a data DVD of some 2.25 Gb which I want to transfer to my PC. I have tried various methods including creating a a new folder and transferring the DVD contents, creating a folder in 'C', but every time I get a message saying that the DVD is too big (or such words).
Is there a solution, please?
Alan.

Answer:Cannot transfer contents of DVD to PC

Welcome to the forums brooke 1...

First of all, knowing your systems specs would help troubleshoot your problem better, 2nd, knowing the exact error message will go a long way since, this way, we don't have to speculate.

How big is your hdd and how much space do you have free on it? is your HDD Fat32 or NTFS?

I have a laptop drive and a normal IDE hard drive, the laptop drive is running W95 and the other drive is running W98. If I get one of those ext. drive cases for laptop drives would I be able to just copy the contents from the hard drive to the laptop drive????The laptop has no floppy drive and no CD so this is the only way to trnsfer files etc.So if I simply copy the files across will windows 98 work on my laptop?ThanksBOB THE NOB

Answer:Transfer Drive Contents

Do you mean that you want to install win98 onto the laptop? If so, what you suggest will not really work - you will need to have some means of installing drivers etc.Sorry, if I have misread the situation.

I am running xp pro. I need to transfer the complete operating system, drivers etc etc from my old disc to a new one (the old small disc will end up in another pc at some time. I do not have access to Norton Ghost, Drive image or other such programme. All help appreciated

Answer:Transfer all contents of one disc to another

To do it properly and have it working properly afterwards, you'll have to get "access to Norton Ghost, Drive image or other such programme", Ken m-f. There is an "xcopy" command which purports to do it, but I've never tried it personally and there is an issue with it. If you do a search of this forum for xcopy, you will find a number of posts on the subject. You might be better in the long run to check out some of the computer magazines in your local newsagents, some of them have older versions of Ghost and Drive Image on their cover disks.

Answer:Transfer Drive Contents

"So if I simply copy the files across will windows 98 work on my laptop?"In you own words, the simple answer is no, it is possible to get 98 onto the laptop though. Two I can think of are 1. Buy an external cdrom and install win98se from disk 2. this probably to complicated for you, take the hard drive out the laptop and put into a desktop as a slave drive and then copy 98 disk across, then reinstall it it into the laptop. Quite frankly if your laptopis that old, I wonder is it worth it?

Just built a new system and upon viewing my Mp3 folder all the files and folders within are viewed as Tiles. Right now i just go to view then click list for each folder and its contents manually.

Having quite alot of Mp3's i'd be here for a while doing it this way... is there any quick way to have a folder's contents all viewed as "List"?
TIA

Answer:Viewing entire contents of folder as "List"

The assumption is you're running XP here sooo...

Just set a folder the way you want it to look (Details, List, etc) then change the Folder Options so all folders will reflect that change. If it doesn't stick, and for folders that have Folder Tasks enabled (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc), it most likely won't so your only real solution becomes disabling Folder Tasks all together and going back to the Classic look.

ps
After posting this I see another assumption is in order: you may not know how to do what I just suggested.

Run Explorer, browse to a folder with content where you just want the List view - just one folder, regardless of content, and change the View to List right then and there. Click Tools - Folder Options - change the Tasks selection to "Use Windows classic folders" if you want to disable that aspect (recommended). If not, click Apply to all folders and then click Apply, then click OK and that should be that.

If you encounter a "stubborn" folder that simply refuses to change, do the same procedure again above but starting off in that troublesome folder to begin with.

Hope this helps...

Hi I need some help with transferring the contents of my current laptops hard drive to a new one. I needed a bigger hard drive so my dad picked me up one of these new samsung flashon hybrid hard drive thingies whilst away. I have an external usb/sata enclosure I can use but I need some advice on the software. I need something that will mirror my old hard drive on to the new one, thus creating a working copy I can just put into the lappy. My current hard drive has 2 partitions, so these will need to be expanded accordingly. I have Norton ghost 2003, but I don't think that will work with Vista. Any help is much appreciated!

I am going to close down my old Hotmail account as getting far too much spam and have opened a new Outlook account. Is there a way to transfer some of my folders from old to new without going through each one and mailing the saved enmails to my new Outlook account ?
