what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Question: what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Preferred Solution: what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

James

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Hi,

I need to replace a TP-Link N600 router that is constantly dropping G-wifi. The N seems stable enough but TP-Link customer disservice is working at it's peak. Totally hopeless. I have been trying to get them to to take it back for warranty-repairs and all they keep telling me to do is update the firmware.

I had done that before I even contacted them the first time. I am now using some of their Beta firmware and still no change. I have had it with TP-Link.

So, looking for 4 x Gigabit LAN, G and N wifi at 450 to 600 Gb. An AC-wifi might be nice, but when N is working right, it does all I need. I still need G for my windows phone. {sigh}

I have just tried Zyxel, Edimax and Netgear. Returned them all as the TP-Link when running right had much better power output on both G and N ate distances. Linksys, not even slightly interested in, so what's left? If a Buffalo, I'd want a non-DD-Wrt version. DD-Wrt is great but too time consuming to configure.

Anyone with personal experience of a router they love that doesn't cost a $100+, care to chime in here.

Thanks

Answer:Decent Router at reasonable price? NOT TP-Link

I got a little-known Router from Western Digital [yeah, the hard drive company] over a year and a half ago, cost $60. When I first got it I'd have to turn the Wi-Fi off [switch on the front] about once a week to re-establish it. After about a month I got a firmware update for it and haven't had a problem since. It's been running 24/7 since 9/11 but we had a transformer blow down the road that day and were without power 6AM until about 7PM that day. Didn't help to also have 10" of snow.

I've set up D-Link and Netgear Routers and haven't had call-backs on them yet.

Hi guys!!

Okay, my camcorder is a Panasonic GS-150 (I bought it 1 year ago and still not for sure if that was a good purchase or not, but oh well i'm stuck with it now) and I mostly use it to make movies w/friends and family. I write screenplays and direct them, act in them, what not and I'm hoping to finally upgrade to a better video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. Now, I have no big complaints about WMM, its been very kind to me and user friendly, but I've way over-used all the transitions and video effects they have to offer. Also, my ideal software would have the ability to put a clip on top of a clip. I don't even know if that's possible, but it sounds like a neat idea to me sense I don't have a green screen handy! I am just a meager wanna-be M. Night Shyamalan here My budget is minimal and I'm hoping not to exceed $80.

Any advise, opinions, tips & tricks and what-not is very appreciated!! THANKS GUYS! YOUR AWESOME!

Noticed today that switches with 10 GbE ports are starting to become quite low in price on eBay. Is this a sign that the price is finally starting to move or are these switches junk, lacking features or not usable to attach a server or two and start playing with the speeds?

I'm mostly seeing HP 2900's but there are others too.

edit: maybe there are just rear stacking ports? The fronts must just be sfp 1 GbE?

Answer:10 GbE starting to become reasonable for home?

Hey,
XP Home for $50 or Pro for ~$75...which is a better deal? Both are OEM as far as I know, unregistered keys as well.

For a laptop (pentium m), personal use, if that makes a difference. I use home usually, will I notice anything significantly better about pro? I know a few of the differences, but is there really anything worth the price difference?

Thanks.

Trying to get the best legal deals on XP and Office. This is the best I've been able to find so far.
Best prices I can find so far are through my employee purchase program, $64 for Home (full) and $129.00 for Pro (upgrade). I prefer Pro since I use the remote desktop feature a lot.

I also see Office 2003 (full) for $125 for a student/teacher version. It's got what I need, Word, Excel and Outlook. I went partially through the order screen and don't see any requirement to provide proof of being a student or teacher. A bit unethical I guess but their website says this:

M$ said:

Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 is a suite of popular Microsoft Office personal productivity applications that is priced affordably for students and teachers in grades K – 12 and institutions of higher education.Click to expand...

[H] is an 'institute of higher learning' by one definition, isn't it? I feel a bit guilty about buying a student edition--if I feel too bad I have the full version of 2000, I can live with it, else the full Office suite is $199.

Anyways, can those prices be beat or am I set? I haven't seen anything close to these prices (but I haven't searched really hard for deals.)

Answer:Any reason for a home user not to grab a 3TB NAS hard drive at a fabulous price?

So, you are planning on using two 1 TB internal HDDs, one for your system disk (where Windows will be installed) and the other for data? And in addition to that you want to use a 3 TB internal HDD boxed up and used as an external HDD connected via a USB3 port I imagine? Just want to make sure I understand you correctly. I have no idea what kind of number you're talking about in regards to the "great deal" you mentioned (the link you posted isn't working). It must be a really good deal since I've recently seen some killer deals on 3 TB external HDD and I don't know why you'd want to hassle with boxing up an internal HDD unless it was a really good deal. In any case, you might consider purchasing a SSD (solid state drive) for your system disk since you are going to be using a SATA III enabled motherboard. Not a huge one, maybe 250 GB for $150, to house Windows and your most frequently used programs. It would make a dramatic improvement in read/write speeds of all operations, as well as decrease boot time significantly. I don't know if you've looked into this options but the benchmark scores for SSDs are off the chart compared to HDDs. Unfortunately, I don't have any links handy but you could just Google "HDD vs SDD benchmark results"

I'm not sure I did anything to answer your question but.... food for thought anyway.

Answer:Vista price differance between US & UK

The versions of windows don't seem to be made specific for any region. (On the English languague versions anyway) When I done my Vista install today, it asked for the regional settings (it defaulted to English US, I had to change it to UK) So I'm assuming based on that it doesn't matter where you buy it, and where you install it.

Answer:XP price drop after Vista?

Nope, given microsoft's history - at retail the older their software gets the more expensive it is. My memory is fuzzy, but I can remember windows 95 being on the shelf where I worked well into the release of windows me (lol). The price if I recall of 95 gradually got higher, while I'm not sure that microsofts doing I certainly don't see the prices going down on their older operating systems because of vista.

Question: Vista price cuts

Microsoft announces Vista price cuts

by Janet Harris

Microsoft has announced plans to cut the retail price of its Windows Vista operating system in 70 countries, at the same time as it ships Service Pack 1, Vista’s first major system update.

The company hopes that this will encourage customers still using Windows XP to switch to Vista.

Boxed versions of Windows Vista, sold online and through stores, represent less than 10 per cent of all licences of the operating system. Windows currently runs over 90 per cent of the world’s PCs.

The proposed changes are designed to help Microsoft sell more standalone copies of Windows.

In the US, Microsoft will reduce prices for the top-end Windows Vista Ultimate, from $399 to $319, for the full version, while the price of an upgrade version will fall from $259 to $219 from $259.

The price of the upgrade version of Vista Home Premium will fall to $129 from $239.

Instead of selling upgrade versions of Vista in emerging markets, Microsoft will move to selling Vista Home Premium and Home Basic, a stripped-down version of the operating system which will sell at the same price as the upgrade version.

Microsoft has sold more than 100 million licences of Vista since it was released in January 2007.

So i was surfin' the egg and saw MCE 2005 for $109.99 with a vista coupon. That coupon gives your Vista Home Premium. So i asked myself, whats the OEM price on Vista Home Premium going to be? If i want vista is gonna be cheaper for me to buy a copy of MCE now that i dont need just to get hte upgrade?

I searched and found nothing, so don't flame me to bad if this has been asked.

Answer:Vista OEM Price, Cheaper to Buy MCE now just for the Coupon?

i am not sure if that works 100% though because if you go the microsoft website it does state that you receive vista if you buy a PC running xp that says vista capable. i work at best buy and we got this stuff back in september, and it was with a new pc purchase, it doesn't come with xp if u just buy it by itself. now thats not our rule that was microsoft's rule because it was there thing we were basically just a messenger.
but ok so every computer comes with a OEM version of xp, so does that make all OEM version compatible with the upgrade? not sure, but if u read microsofts agreement you click ok to when you install xp on a pc OEM states it is linked to that motherboard. so if u replace the motherboard then that copy of xp is linked to it. so how would they link your copy of OEM XP to a motherboard? is it during the first activation? not sure, well people have been told by newegg it will work, and people have been doing it and putting their info on the vista express upgrade program, but nobody has been approved yet as far as i know, people who bought a PC including myself and have done it have been approved. so i would b careful with it.

On home computer which uses XP Professional , with office 2003 ,it woks no problems at all. However, on my laptop with Vista home, and the same office 2003 ,when I run macro it collects the data but not the share price collection from Yahoo. Any thoughts on the reason. I am trying to connect to two computers that are connected to a Linksys Router using Remote Assistance on a Vista Home Premium Machine. I get the error message that the person you are trying to help may have closed remote assistance. I get the same message when trying to connect to either machine. I am guessing the problem is with a setting in the router, but I don't know what setting.

Answer:Remote Access from Vista Home Premium to Vista Home Premium and XP Home Edition

You should forward the ports on the router to the IP Addresses of the machines, that you want to connect to. On Symantec PC Anywhere, it is ports 5631 and 32, on Windows remote desktop connection it is port 3389 that needs to be forwarded.

Today, the price of gold sits around $1660/fine ounce, maybe Huawei should put their E173 and E220 drivers on wall st. The price per unit would surely surpass that of gold before the close of trade.
On the Vodacom website there are two downloads for the E220, a pc software for vodafone and a VMC update for the dashboard. I downloaded and installed the software for Vodafone onto the laptop, and thereafter dowloaded and updated the E220 with the VMCLite_E220_3_2_1_156_standard program.

Now, since the modem's dashboard could be updated, it would be safe to say that the modem was detected, right?
Well, this is what happens when I open the Vodafone program:

I have been struggling to sort this out for a while, and I'm sure I'm missing something so simple...

Hi there just joined the forum, so hello to everyone.

Could someone please point me in the right direction with my problem.
I have tried to sort it out myself but I just don't understand what to do.

I have had my Toshiba Laptop preinstalled with Vista home basic now for six months, everything was fine so I decided to upgrade to Home premium.
I upgraded no problem and everything was fine until I had problem with the laptop and had to reformat.

And there is my problem, through being a little naive and silly I have no record or instructions to get my upgrade back.

I have tried to look for a solution but Just don't know what to do.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Answer:How to upgrade the Vista from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium

Hi,

how did you updated your system? With a update-DVD or something similar? Or maybe online?
Would be useful to know, because if it?s not clear how you?ve updated your system to home premium no one could probably help you.

Would appreciate your feedback. :)

I'm planning to install Vista Home Premium over Home basic. My question is, do I need to save any files to disk or will I need to reinstall any applications after installing home premium? Or can I just upgrade and all will be good, being optimistic. Thanks

Answer:Installing Vista Home Premium Over Vista Home Basic

I cleared out the other topic and got everything sorted for you. No problems. The forum has been having some hiccups lately. No biggie.

Upgrades are iffy at best. I would recommend you backup all your important info. Documents, music and everythign that you want to keep after the install.

Then format and install Home Premium.

Hi

I'm looking to buy a new laptop. My budget is £350 for the machine plus the extra for software. Usage will be usual stuff-Microsoft Office & Internet Access via Internet Explorer(I guess this is what the machine comes with)

First question is: what's the difference between Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium. What can Premium do that Basic can't?

Second question: which makes/models shall I avoid and which makes/models shall I go for? i.e Toshiba or Dell for instance?

Any assistance is gratefully received

Answer:Vista home basic or vista home premium-what's the difference?

First question:
For starters this link is the comparison chart of Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

Second question I can't answer since I've been using Dell only. See the limits & benefits of an OEM. http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/glossary/f/oemsoftware.htm

Hopefully someone else will jump in to answer your 2nd question.

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

Temperatures:

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

About 2 minutes in total here. I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

A four month old mid-range factory built computer.Functions exactly as it should, but ignoring the sound advice "If it aint broke don't fix it" i would like it to sound less like a collection of busy fans, which it has!I am prepared to spend some more and replace the PSU, CPU's fan and even the case fan.The video card fan seems blameless, stalling for one moment doesn't change the rushing noise. The PSU is probably the most justifiable replacement. A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?!  It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base.  What they offered is even more absurd!  They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it.  We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!!  Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

Currently I am unemployed and so when I found out that my PC broke (this is a friend's) I was devastated to realize that Windows XP (Pro or HE) both range around $100 for the standard full edition. I am currently running it off of Bart PE but that isn't much help because I can't even view pics or access the internet. My other friend told me however that you can get Windows XP as cheap as $70 for the stripped down, "No Manual, No Colorful Box," edition. Problem is... I can't find this mythical store/site. Is he bluffing or does this place exist (and where?) Thanks heaps

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

Thanks

I have installed Windows 7 on my unit, but Sound Blaster 5.1 Live is not compatible. Any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:Reasonable priced Windows 7 sound card

Take a quick look at this post http://nerdfortress.com/2009/06/06/no-sound-get-sound-blaster-live-and-windows-7-to-play-nice/

Sounds like you might be able to download the XP drivers and then right-click and run in compatibility mode using XP SP2 as your choice.

Might be worth a quick try.

I essentially skipped Vista completely (bought it with the hardware, installed it, then discarded it) and started with the 7000 beta. Am currently toying with 7077 on a new, 3-week-old monster machine that needs to shift into productive use very soon.

Moving the "Documents and Settings" folder was easy back in XP days. It appears to be a lot more complicated now. However, after a bit of reading, I've come up with the following:
Clean install (in this case, 7077 x64) as user 'username'
Enable 'Administrator' account
Log out of 'username' and log into 'Administrator'
Continue with computer setup using the 'Administrator' account
Delete both the account and files for 'username'
Hack the registry to alter the location for new user accounts
-- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]
-- Replace '%SystemDrive%\Users' with 'D:\Users' for the 'ProfilesDirectory' key
Create a new account for 'username' with admin privileges which appears as D:\Users\username\...
Log out of the 'Administrator' account (leaving it active and located in the C:\Users folder)
Log into the new 'username' admin account and go about business as usual.
(There will be four additional non-admin accounts created on this machine -- all of them located in the D:\Users folder.)
My question is: Does this seem a valid approach to separating the Users folder from the system drive? Or, am I setting myself up for problems?

Answer:Moving \Users folder ... Is this a reasonable approach?

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

In short: any help vastly appreciated. This is the second time in two years I've lost my vacation photos, last year my camera got stolen Maybe I need to ... Read more

Hi, I've planned to buy  a  good LTE WWAN adapter for my T440 recently, but going though many negative opinions on officially supported EM7345  I think it's point less to spend many on it. I really like EM7455 but I am sure I will fall into the problem with "unsupported WWAN card ..."  which I know I can work around, but would prefer a clean solution instead. Is there any good alternative to EM7345 for T440 to get it working out of the box? Ideal would be official BIOS with EM7455 enabled in BIOS whitelist, which I believe is unlikely.

Greetings,

Right now with the current set of GPOs (like three dozen or so) and configuration it takes approximately 1-3 minutes for users to login. Our old computer system with terminal servers would take 2-3 minutes for users to login, or if about the same time -- there were other issues such as horribly under-specced and overloaded servers with 40 users per terminal server.

With a brand new set of GPOs (about a dozen or less) and OU structure that I carefully made and designed after spending several hours analyzing the existing GPOs and OU structure, it takes on average 16 seconds to login (best being 12 seconds, worst being 22 seconds). This uses VMware View Persona management storing profiles at \\srv-persona1\EXP_Profiles$\%username%. This is currently not being used by our North American environment.

If we use a persistent local profile through VMware View, login time is 2 seconds flat. Our Asian environment of at least 100 users uses this + the brand new set of GPOs and OU structure I created, but without VMware View Persona management (again -- persistent local profile).

At minimum, my supervisor is wanting to get the login time below 10 seconds -- aiming for 2 seconds, while using Persona management. He told me he would like to get rid of all of the GPOs (or as much as possible). I responded saying this is unrealistic and wrong, defeating the purpose of why GPOs as a feature exists and would also result in higher maintenance time and more frequent reprovi... Read more

Hi,

Yes, I have a Window's Vista Toshiba laptop, Service Pack 2.  We have fibre optic service through our local phone company and a router in the house.

I have my browsers set to open to https://www.google.com  for the sole purpose of phishing prevention.  If this is not what I think it is, please correct me on this first point.  When I don't have a secure connection, a message pops up saying the connection isn't secure.  I've assumed this was phishing.  Again, is that a correct assumption?  Second, when I have that message appear, often I've disconnected the router and plugged it in later, and for the most part that has 'solved' the connection problems......but, that gets old.  Especially since these issues happen often multiple times a day.

My current security is Microsoft Security Essentials, which I know went obsolete with XP, but is still good with Vista (?).  I also have as a back up, Emisoft Anti-Malware (free) for scanning purposes.  I tried their 'Protection' which is given in the beggining on trial with Security Essentials deleted, but stopped it before it's time trial was up because of how slow it made the computer.  Also, I've tried Malwarebytes Real Time Potection with similar results.  I then used HitmanPro, first on free trial, than after that was over for awhile, I decided to buy into it's annual cost.  HitmanPro, I have found, scare's off the 'phish'er's most of the t... I was trying to scare the 'phisher' away by using HitmanPro as I've done before, and noticed in the screen where PUP's appear a very very brief message saying something about SUN CLOUD UPLOADING.  Of course, it was so brief, and I wasn't really watching closely anyway, so it may have said something else........I'm just telling what I think I saw.  I tried googling that, and come up with zero.

My Computer recently broke down to an irreparable level, this could not have come at a worse time since I will be cash strapped for the next 6 or so months. Though I have found an AMD Athlon 3800+ X2 system for sale for only $125AUD. Pretty much a barebones system with XP SP2, I can swap my hard drives and Graphics card to this computer.

The question I'm wondering is, due to my non-experience with AMD, I'm not sure how it will handle compared to my other ancient system.

Main uses for the computer were: Browsing, Photo-editing, Occasional Video-Editing and some light Gaming(Crysis/COD/Oblivion, only with settings set to medium and not planning to purchase any more graphic intensive games) Not sure if this computer will handle them.

Oh and incase this post doesn't already show the specs for my last computer, the basics were.

Pentium D 2.8GHz Processor
320GB Hard Drive
160GB OS Hard Drive
250 Watt PSU (Yes I know, very bad considering the video card)
Asus ATI Radeon 4670

Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.
Tuby

Answer:Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

Here's the question --
I had a Dell Dimension IDE XP SP3 PC but the memory/motherboard is gone. I ordered a Dell Inspiron 530S that only has 1 320 Gb SATA drive. I have access to older Dimension PCs at the office, and could use some direction or web shortcuts on taking my old HD, which has XP Home SP3 and pictures and financials and resumes (Word '03) and adding that to a PC that can "see" my home PC hard drive as a secondary IDE drive so that I can copy files to a flash drive/CD to transfer to my new Dimension SATA/Vista Home SP1 drive. Thanks in advance for your response.

Hi all,

I just recently got a Satellite L300 with an OEM version of Vista Home Basic.
I have a copy of Windows Vista: Home Premium (upgrade) disc and decided to use it on the laptop.

I put the disc in, and followed the steps however the upgrade option is blanked out... This is if I use the product key provided with the disc or not.
The laptop came with Service Pack 1 already installed and the disc I own was released into the shops before Service Pack 1.

My main question really is how can I get my disc to upgrade my version of Vista. I have tried searching Google, this website, Microsoft's website and I keep getting the same answer.

Basically go through options and do anytime upgrade. All of these are for me to buy from Microsoft which would be kind of pointless as I already have a copy.
I did read something at on a site that stated my disc would have to have the service pack on the disk and I seen a website with some kind of disc editing program for Vista but im not too keen on using it and the 'how to' wasn't very easy to understand.

Also, im not too keen on calling either Toshiba or Microsoft on premium rate numbers for help with something I have already bought and paid for and should be as simple as a few steps.

Anyway hope someone can help because I would really like to upgrade.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium issues

Hello

I understand you and it is really annoying but what to do now? the fact is that Toshiba has offered this notebook with certain Vista version. This version must be offered with best and latest available Microsoft security updates. Due to this Toshiba offers it with latest SP1 option.

So now you try to install update offered long time ago and probably offered before SP1 was on the market. I understand your point of view but, in my opinion, it has nothing to do with Toshiba now, and you should try to find solution with Microsoft. For example you can also pick up info from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930733

Clean Vista Home Premium can be installed without any problems. All drivers, tools and utilities can be downloaded from Toshiba support & download page.
