Need an application to check a hard drive

Question: Need an application to check a hard drive

My father's PC has been acting up. He likes to play World of Warcraft a lot, but for some reason every time he tries the game crashes after about 45 seconds with an "Unable to read WoW.exe". I've even reinstalled the game, with the same problems.

I'm going to download the official Seagate drive checker, but I was wondering if there is another one I could try.

Also... if you have any other input as to what the problem might be, I would greatly appreciate it.

Preferred Solution: Need an application to check a hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Need an application to check a hard drive

You could do that. Also run a disk error check on the drive (right click the drive and go to properties, then the tool tab). Then i would run disk defragment as well as AntiVirus/spyware software.

Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

Answer:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

when I was finally able to get chkdsk to run in safe mode I got:

"Truncating badly linked attribute records from file record segment 53267

recovering lost files.

an unspecified error has occurred"

I did manage to fine file0001.chk and delete it.

I also uninstalled any programs I've recently installed.

I ended (in task manager) as many processes as I could and STILL can't run speed disk.

I just get back to the same 'ol UNABLE TO ACCESS DRIVE C: etc.

I have WIN XP home edition sp2 i run Norton Internet Security 2005 and Norton Systemworks 2005, spyware doctor, adaware, and a couple of registry editor cleaners and a bugfixer.

I've never seen this before. Double click on e:\ in my computer and it says not a valid win32 application. Seen it when opening applications but not a drive! all other drives are fine. First time i saw it it was looking for install.exe, which i remember deleting a week or so ago. Most likely because it was a missing shortcut in registry or because it was corrupted or something simular. I dont know what to do about this, as I said never seen it happen b4 on a drive. You can open e drive when you right click and explore but when double click sometimes it tries to locate install.exe. No virus, but did have a few recently, I wont put it down to that though and dismiss because I am very vigilant and remove virus immediately, and scan twice a day, always scanning b4 opening apps. Weird one! Logically, how do i stop it looking for install.exe when openning?
thanx

Answer:Application hangs and Hard drive error

I really don't know what's going on. You could try re-installing the programs which stopped working, because maybe checkdisk replaced some of these files it used? I would also recommend running a system restore to go back before you ran chkdsk.

And if you really want to make sure you avoid these problems in the future, get a Mac next time.

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

Thanks,

Z

Answer:application hard drive usage program

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

Hi

Over the last 48 hours I've noticed that my laptop has become unbearably slow,

I've done numerous Malware and Virus scans all come back clean as a whistle (However the scan have taken some time compared to normal)

I have noticed that my programs seem to be slowing when the computer is accessing the HDD, I've had task manager running and the cpu and memory are both reasonable running at about 50-60% max.

I've run Seatools which passed all the test until I got to the long generic which it FAILED.

My question is does anyone know any software that I can run to confirm it is my HDD failing and not the HDD controller (which is inbuilt into MB) before I spend money on new HDD etc

My Laptop is:
Intel Core i3 - 380M
Windows 7 Home Premium
4GB DDR3 Ram
320GB HDD ( Western Digital )

Any help greatly appreciated
Kind Regards

Question: Hard Drive Check

Hey guys here a question for ya, Is there any way to diagnose a hard drive remotely to know if it going bad or has any bad sectors, cause the check disk doesn't really do much, In case some are familiar with Linux and what not . There Disk utilities can show you if the hard drive is going bad or has a bad sector . Be awesome if there way :)

Answer:Hard Drive Check

Windows Check Disk (Error Checker) only checks for errors in the Windows file system and (optionally) checks for bad sectors.

To check the drive's physical health you need to use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. The links are here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Hi, I've been having some probs for a while now with my PC (I've got two and I'm on the other one now).
It's HP Pavilion tower running Vista.
Done all the normal things, registry clean, diminished start up progs etc etc, malware/spyware checks, so figured it's more than likely a hardware prob, so have started checking things with diagnosic tools / progs. Memory checks out ok.
So have commenced CHK DSK check on the hard drive, it's got up to 4 of 5 checks, has a couple of lines of info after that, (replaced bad clusters in a document) but it's now frozen (seemingly) it's been about 4 hours now.

My question is, is it still running? Or has it reached a point where it's frozen itself out? There's no light on the PC flashing to indicate it's still running, neither is the fan on. It doesn't feel overly hot.
I can't do anything with it unless I do a force restart. Screen is showing the testing text, no screen saver working, no mouse arrow. No flashing next figure icon like when you are using 'rin'.
Cheers,
Mark

Hello,

I found a hard drive somewhere is my house, a Seagate barracuda 7200 RPM, 250 GB and I wanted to know if there is a way to check if it's working , I don't even know what's in it, so I wanted to know if I can do something with it,assuming it does work, for example combine it with my current hard drive for some extra storage, or maybe install my windows 7 on it if the hard drive I'm using now fails in future (like a backup or something-is it possible?)

Thanks all!

Answer:How to check a hard drive?

mibaup,
I'll assume that the drive is a sata drive and not IDE please confirm. If it's a sata drive then all you need is a free power connector off your PSU and a spare sata cable. With these two cables connected to the drive and the other end if the sata connected to a free sata port on the mobo then all you will need to do is boot up the system as normal and then locate the newly added drive and have a look around. If it doesn't show up you may need to have a look in disk manager but lets take this one step at a time. Please report back when you install and boot up.

I have a Dell Dimension and replaced the tiny hard drive with a new one last week. We copied all the information and formatting of the old one exactly to the new one, and then booted the computer with the new hard drive.

Now I am having difficulty opening excel files - the computer pops up a 'now installing . . . ' message, then that goes away automatically and it comes back with the selected workbook open. It does that every single time, and takes a long time to do so. Excel is installed on my computer – I can open it from the Programs file without a problem.

Also, we have two machines that are networked, and my hyperlinks to the other computer (.doc files) open just fine. But if I access that computer's files by going through the normal channels, the files take forever to open. I tried to run the 'detect and repair' but now 'it' does not recognize my CD, telling me it may not be an authentic CD (but it is). I cannot uninstall and reinstall XP for the same reason - 'it' does not recognize the disk as authentic.

Shortcuts that used to work just fine are now very, very slow.

What did I do wrong and how can I fix things? My tiny hard drive was slow, but this is worse!

Thanks in advance! Pam

I downloaded a small 2mb torrent file and when I tried to open it...it disappeared! Then it started popping up windows. The name of the file is prog.exe. I can see it in task manager, under processes but there is no directory path for it. The only way to kill it is in task manager but it always comes back on reboot. It is also in XP's startup in the boot.ini. I found it in the registry as well. I have deleted it out of registry and disabled it in startup but everytime I start my computer it boots and is still in the registry. I have tried to search the hard drive for it but windows fails to find it. I have also ran AVG antivirus but still no success. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sometimes randomly my HDD starts doing crackling noises alot and especially when i do something. This may last for like 5-20mins. Is there any program to check what program or other is using up all the bandwidth going/coming through to my HDD?

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

**If you want to try a more detailed program try; http://systemexplorer.net/download.php
Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .

Hi, I was wondering if there was any way for me to check which computers in the past my external hard drive has been connected to. I want to check if anyone has been using/going through my hard drive. What happened is my external hard drive fell and broke. I was wondering if I could check -my- computer for any data/file that would tell where the hard drive connected in the past had also been connected to. ie. would their computers have left some sort of "stamp" or something on the hard drive that would have been left over on my computer after I last connected the hard drive to mine? I'm running Lion and the other people would probably have been on Snow Leopard. But the problem is the hard drive with the files broke and is now gone...so if someone used my hard drive, and then I plugged it into my laptop before it broke, would there be any information on my laptop that would tell where else that past connected drive had been?

Answer:Check who has used external hard drive

I don't think there is a way you can tell where it has been. The PCB in the external only mimicks the drive. I'm a little confused after that.

As we have properly understood your issue you are getting hard drive issue: The 24 character error code for the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the start-up issue that you describe.  Nitin singh guleria

How can I check if my files are intact on my hard drive if the operating system (windows xp) is not working?

Answer:check if files are on hard drive

If the operating system is toast your files are still intact. But the easiest way to check/retrieve them would be to plug the hard drive up to another computer (slaving it) and getting them manually. But I can just about guarantee your files are still there. Nothing short of the hard drive having a physical issue then your files might be corrupt.

This computer had problems with the hard drive which failed and the smart hard drive check notified me of this. I have since swapped the hard drive to a SanDisk SSD but the hard drive check is still failing even though the drive works perfectly well and I know this because I tested it on my Toshiba notebook computer (ancient machine). The SSD is not brand new, it used to be a permanent fixture inside a Toshiba notebook which was running Debian Linux. Anyway I swapped it out and put it inside the HP, but the smart disc check is still saying there are problems with the hard disc and I wondered if this was a problem with the SATA connector (or some other parts of the hardware), or simply because it was an operating system that the machine was not expecting.I am desperate to get some help on this matter so truly grateful for any suggestions that can be made.System born on: 14/12/2015BIOS vendor: insideBIOS version: F.80( hopefully this is posting in the correct place, please let me know if it isn't!)Thank you,Samuel

However all I seem to have is 84.6Gb in C drive and 6GB in D drive. Does that make any sense? Could I have "lost" GB somewhere? Very confused now!

Answer:How can I check what size Hard drive I should have

Something is certainly wrong here. You will have a restore partition (occupying the 6 odd gb) but i can't see where the rest of the drive space has gone.Try this :Open control panel and go to device managerThen open administrative toolsThen storageDisk drivesCheck to see if you have any unallocated space, and post back.

Hi, my sister has been connecting her computer to the internet with no anti virus software at all. I think she has picked up a virus (surprise surprise) so, my question is, can I take the hard drive out of her computer, put it in my computer as a second hard drive and then scan it with my virus checker (Norton). If so could anyone tell me how to go about this. Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:virus check second hard drive

You can do this yes but your sister could download a free a/v software package the two main ones are avast click here and avg click here both are good although avg 7 has been having a number of probs sending emails at the mo. I would also recommended ad-aware click here and spybot click hereAlso stinger found here click here which will search your sisters pc for worms I would also recommend a firewall zone alarms is free and gets recommended click here there are other about thou

Hello,

Whenever I reboot my computer into windows, it always says that it has to scan my second hard drive for errors, or something like that, I did absolutely nothing to cause this, I am dual booting Fedora Core 1, and Windows XP, when I boot into Fedora, everything runs fine, except I can open mozilla, it always shows the Mozilla splash screen, then it just sits there doing nothing, I let it sit there for 15 minutes, and still nothing.

I have scanned my computer with Spybot S&D, AVG Anti-Virus, and I use Zonelabs Zone Alarm for firewall, I have scanned my hard drives with GWSCAN 5.0.9 four times, each time returns "No Errors Found"

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Answer:hard drive check at boot

a very long shot, but see if this gives any insight:

If it's a corrupted registry, and you can boot, try a System Restore.

Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue  HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Im a newbie to this forum and am hoping members can help.My neighbour's PC has 2 partitions, one for Windows XP and application programs (system partition), the other for his data (data partition). When he boots his system, Windows XP gets as far as his desktop. However his usual desktop does not appear, he gets an empty blue screen. His mouse cursor can be moved across the screen and Ctrl Alt Del brings up task manager. I've removed his hard drive and connected it to a second bus on my desktop PC, copied the contents of his second (data) partition to my PC's external hard drive. I also copied as much of his hard drive's first (system) partition as possible onto my PC's external hard drive. My plan is to replace his hard drive in his PC and reinstall Windows. I'd like to avoid having to re-install all his application programs by copying back his Progam Files folder and his registry entities. But Windows Explorer seems to hide all the registry entities from the end used. Please is there any advice out there on how to get his Application programs running again without having to reinstall them? Many thanks in advance.Mike

Answer:Recovering registry and application programs from corrupted hard drive

Simply copying the Applications to the machine will not work...they have to be re-installed.Here is a program that states it can do it but i have not tested it yet...Trial Version...10 tries and it's done.

I have a HP Beats Special Edition 15 p030nr laptop which I have been experiencing issues with for the last two weeks. It began as the computer simply freezing up, not able to load anything once it booted up and I logged in, and this resulted in having to gard boot the computer to shut it down. I completed a system restore of the computer, and this appeared to resolve the issue for a few days. Now, the computer heats up really fast and the fan becomes really loud, then the computer completely restarts itself over and over. It fully loads to the account, I log in and within 2-5 minutes the computer restarts itself. There is nothing that it set to load upon start up of the PC. The only thing other than school documents from professors and Microsoft Office 360 directly from Microsoft have been downloaded. The computer has hardly anything on it as I only use it for school.I completed a system check scan which resulted in Failure ID: GU5B63-7NJ8K8-MFPWLJ-60XQ03 and Product ID: G6R14UA#ABA and the words Hard Drive Short DST Check failed, and Hard Drive 1. I would appreciate any help with determining what this error code means so that I can go ahead and attempt to fix my laptop. It would crap out the week before exams start...thankfully I do have a back up of all important files from the computer.

I have a system set up where I install a windows 7 drive, then I remove the drive and plug in a configured windows 8.1 drive. Doing this allows me to do work on either system without buying another unit. Here is the issue: until recently I could swap these drives and do my work and use a second HDD that has the data files and there was no problem writing/reading the files on the storage unit. Now it seems (due to some system updates on 8.1 I assume) every time I swap from 8.1 to 7, I have to run a complete consistency check on the storage drive(s) when I plug in the windows 7 unit - unless the storage unit is a USB drive. I have found it necessary to remove the installed data storage drives connected to the sata ports and connect the data units via USB ports. Then everything works and I can use the data storage units with either operating system. It's a real pain in the rear to have this happen now. Is this due to the recent updates to 8.1?? when I go to 8.1 from 7, there isn't any call for a consistency  check in the 8.1 OS - just when I go from 8.1 to 7.This is a recent event and it happens now with the most recent 'updates' to the windows 8.1 OS drives - swapping from that drive to windows 7 (pro or home premium) causes the windows 7 to call for the check.Help, anyone? Thanks to all.....texasjim

Answer:Hard drive consistency check - windows 7

Have you tried turning indexing off for both OS to see if that helps? I had some strangeness happening between Linux Mint 16 and Windows 7 on a system where there was 2 hard drives installed. The first hard drive was partitioned in half with 1 half for Windows 7 and the other half for Linux Mint 16. The second hard drive was where data was stored so that no matter what OS I chose from the grub boot option, my data was there and not isolated on that other OS. I had similar consistency checks popping up with Windows 7, and I thought that maybe the HDD was failing.I ran Crystal Disk Info to check out the health of both hard drives and they were healthy. I did some research and saw info related to Windows Indexing causing problems with dual-boot Linux/Windows systems and the cure was to disable Indexing.I disabled Indexing and the problem was resolved.Maybe your seeing a similar issue and disabling Indexing will cure it as well. Its worth a try  It seemed like this issue was more frequent when data was added or removed from the second hard drive, but if data remained the same there was no problems. Linux was happy with the 2nd hard drives data no matter if files were added/removed, or altered. But Windows 7 didnt like changes that occured by Linux to the second hard drive and so Windows 7 complained  about consistency checks.

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. It was stuck on the HP logo for a while and then was followed by a message stating that the PC has a problem and it was "Preparing Automatic Repair".The screen is now blank and does not do anything. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!

Answer:HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK FAILED

Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive.  Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video.  It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148...  Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Good afternoon Sevenforums!

I have been having some troubles with my laptop, I am trying to install a new hard drive into my laptop but I keep getting the check cable PXE error. I have tried popping the Windows 7 32bit Home premium disc in and it says there is no hard drive installed. I check the Bios and it's there.

Just not sure where to go from here I have tried changing from ACHI to Compatibility which is offered in the bios but to no avail.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C650-034 and it is a Western Digital blue 500GB hard drive.

Help would be much appreciated!

Answer:PXE check cable error (New Hard Drive)

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

Hi, I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this But anyways, I basically dropped my HP 15 Notebook (15-f305dx) and now it won't boot. When I turn it on, it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank, black screen, and after a long while, a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error . Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again, then it goes back to the black screen and the same error. I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work. It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error. So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check. I don't know what any of this means. do I need a new laptop?

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hi.
Running on vista
I'm having problems using my external hard drive. When powering up it comes up with two windows suggesting I should run scan disk on the drive. Both the windows pop up at the same time, one behind the other. Running scan disk from either of these options fails to work properly (them seem to interfer with each other)
When booting the PC with the external HD already turned on a going to it in My Com. and using the tools there it gets about 1/2 way through and seems to stall.
I can't seem to run a disk scan on start up for the external drive, only for the hard wired in drive.
Having the disk on in the back ground does seem to interfer with windows operation even without me activly accessing the disk.
I'd rather not scrap the disk as it has a lot of music on which i don't fancy losing. With a bit of mucking about I could pull these files off onto the C: drive, but the external drive seems to stall when doing this 9making the operation less than practical)
Any ideas?

If someone would walk me through running a disk checker upon start up that would be fantablous. I'm running vista upgraded from XP (does this make any difference?)

Answer:Check Disk on External Hard Drive

Sounds like your drive has a bad sector or two. Let scandisk run; when it stalls it means it is hitting a bad sector, so it will go a lot slower, but when it finally finishes the bad sectors will be marked on the disk eliminating the stalling problem. Once this is complete, copy all of the data off of the drive so that you have a backup in case the drive fails later on down the road. Sometimes the drive will continue to run without any further issues for a long time, but if it starts getting bad sectors soon after, then it's probably on its way out.

Product Name: hp15-r181nr My HP 15 laptop was running slow and I couldn't get past the Welcome Screen.  I ran a diagnostics test and received the Hard Drive Short DST Check : Failed message.  My laptop is no longer under warranty.  What are my options?

Answer:Hard Drive Short DST Check:Failed

The disk-drive either has failed, or it is showing that it is about to fail. Given that it is out-of-warranty, you need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and then reinstall Windows. I looked at: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7234951/model/7450458 There is no option to place an order with HP to get a "System Recovery Set".This is either one USB memory-stick, or several DVD disks, that you can use to reinstall Windows. However, if your computer was running Windows 10, you have a "digital entitlement" to reinstall Windows 10.On another computer, see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10You can download Windows 10, and install it on the new disk-drive.If asked to enter a 25-character product-key, click "I do not have one", to activate your entitlement. Although Windows does not boot from the old disk-drive, it may still "barely-work" -- just long-enough to attach it as a "slave" disk-drive, and to copy all your files/bookmarks/music/pictures from it.

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails with 24 alphanumberic characters "UAJL6W-77F8J8-XD7V6J-60WH03" that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recov... Over the weekend, notebook was running slow.  Yesterday it would not boot.  The HP logo screen appeared a couple of minutes as usual, but the black screen with the circle never went away.  I ran a quick scan and the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed.  What is this in layman's terms and is there anything I can do?  TIA Have not made any installations or updates; however, after doing a hard reset and running the quick scan, restored BIOS.

hard drive smart check failed   failure ID  MBX2XW-7R689H-MFPV7F-60CP03 PROD  G6Q75VA#ABA

Answer:hard drive smart check failed

The electronics on the disk-drive have 'S.M.A.R.T'.SMART does real-time monitoring of many characteristics of the disk-drive, e.g.,* how many milli-seconds from "off" to "ready",* maximum temperature,* number of hours of usage,* number of "bad" sectors that have been mapped to some "spare" sectors,* and so on. So, a "SMART failure" is an indication that the "observed" values have exceeded the "normal" values, i.e., "out-of-range". Take the notice as a warning that your disk-drive is "dying". Google-search for 'download SPECCY free'.Download, install, and run it, to look at all the measurements in the SMART categories. Make a "backup" of your files/music/pictures/bookmarks onto an external disk-drive,or buy a brand-new disk-drive, connect it, and "clone" your current disk-drive onto the new disk-drive,and reconfigure your computer to boot from the new disk-drive. Is your disk-drive relatively "new", e.g., less than 2 years old?If so, it may still be warrantied by the manufacturer,i.e., ship them your disk-drive, and they will ship you an *EMPTY* replacement drive. You'll need to reinstall Windows, and reload your files from your "backup".

Having had to fit a new hard drive, I made the classic mistake of leaving the second hard drive still attached to the IDE cable. After fromatting and loading windows new drive was called F with the old second drive re-named C.Having checked forum postings I know that cannot re-name the drive (F) that has the boot up info on.Problem I am getting is that on boot up and re-boots computer keeps saying a hard drive needs to be checked. I am unsure if this is C drive which have re-named to H, or the F drive with OS on it. Second drive is only 2 months old as well following previous crash caused by my son.Am running a disc scan with repair errors on the old disc (now H). Any ideas what could be causing this. would I be better off disconnecting 2nd Drive, and reformatting new hard drive re-load OS (win XP) so drive is called C.I am not too bothered about drive letters but I know it will confuse the rest of the family.

Answer:new hard drive, disc check on boot up

You would be better of disconnecting the second drive, reformating the OS drive and reinstalling.

Hi all,

I am new to this but attempting to try to recover some files from my Iomega external hard drive. I was suprised it came up with an error when I plugged it in as i hardly used it, just for backing up.

Now it has alot of files on I would like to attempt to get back. Pictures etc.

The error is cyclic crc check - drive needs formatting.

The drive still spins up ok, i can hear it. The computer can see the drive.

I tried the Recuva software but It cannot access the drive.

I have tried to type CMD chkdsk/r as I saw this may do something online but all i get is insufficient priviledge. I tried altering the user admin account but didnt make a difference.

Is there anything else I can do presonally?

How much does professional recovery cost?

Many thanks
David

Try removing the drive from its enclosure and kook it directly to the computer.

As for the chkdsk, run CMD as Admin first. shouldn't get access denied.

Also I would try booting off of a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntuand see if you can see the drive that way.

I am gonna ask probably a really stupid question. I believe my hard drive went kaput. So I am going to buy a new hard drive. After I install XP,drivers and programs onto it, I was wondering if I could take the hard drive I think went kaput and make it a slave to the new hard drive to check to see if there is anything on it to save? Mind you the hard drive is making grinding noises so should I even attempt to do this? LOL

Answer:Installing a new hard drive to check the other one that went kaput.

Yep. You could do it. If it's gonna die, it's gonna die, so get what you can.
Just install the OS on the new drive and slave the troubled one for data...
Then, save your data from the old unit, if it isn't totally wore out, to folders on
the primary drive and then discard it....(I mean, recycle.)

Hi All,Ive just formatted a hard drive and would like to know how to do an integrity check. Why do we format a hard drive? What is integrity check?

Answer:How to perform a Hard Drive Integrity Check

We format hard drives to prepare it so that the operating system (e.g. Windows XP) knows how to use it. Different operating systems use different file formats. Formatting also deletes everything on the drive. As for integrity checking, you could do basic error-checking by right-clicking on My Computer -> Properties -> Tools -> click Check Now. Explore the options available there. There are more advanced tools available for download or purchase for more comprehensive hard drive maintainance.

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA
