Media conversion software?

Question: Media conversion software?

I'm new to converting media files, and every piece of software I find just hasn't worked. So, I'm hoping that the gurus here can help me with suggestions on what Windows XP software is best for converting WMV files to MPEG or MPEG4 formats!

I'm having trouble with keeping up with codecs for WMV files too, so suggestions on a conversion programme that can keep up with current codecs would help

Something that affordable would be great, however I suspect I can come up with funds for the right piece of software.

Because I'm a newbie to video conversion, I get lost easily. I may know my way around some software types, but have no idea with these ones! If there's a "dummy's step by step guide to converting wmv to mpg" it'd make things a lot more simple. Think of me as your traditional blonde at the computer.

Thank you! I'll be in your debt if I can get this solved ASAP, because I'm getting so frustrated at this I'm thinking of throwing the computer out the window!

Preferred Solution: Media conversion software?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Media conversion software?

There are volumes of both freewares and sharewares for file conversion of different types. There are also long lists of sites to pick from when running a web search. One site with several sites listed is seen at Best Download Software - All Most Popular Software Free Download One free tool specific for wmv to mpeg is seen at ::.:: Iran Download - WMV to AVI MPEG WMV VCD SVCD DVD Converter v2.8.0 ::.::

As far as guides you simply follow the help files if any for the program itself. Some of the freewares will work well while others have adwares at times. Usually you select the first type of file from a menu to be converted like wmv and then you then choose the format for it to be changed to. DIVX is one shareware that seems good found among a few others at Video Encoders and converter Fully Reviewed Freewares

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

I have a media file that started out as an MP1 (MPG) file that's 45MB. It contains a 3-1/2 minute TV news story that I want to put on my web site in a secure section for a few business associates to see. (I had a VHS cassette sent to me, and then had a local shop convert it to the MPG file.)

My web host is a major jerk. (Suggestions on where to go for web hosting are welcome. EarthLink is my ISP if that helps.) He converted the MPG file to a 4MB RM (Real Media) file. The quality loss was significant but not intolerable. Then, so it downloads relatively quickly for dial-up users, he broke it into seven smaller RM files that are somehow strung together by a RAM file. However, the result leaves much to be desired in that there's not only a pause between segments but the progress bar starts from scratch for each segment -- there's no way to go to various places in the whole file. Not what I want to show my business associates! I also don't know if it's advisable to limit everyone to having to use Real Player to view it.

Is there a preferred way to go about this? (ASX just caught my attention, but I don't know enough about it, or about any of this.)

Also, is there any chance I can download a low-cost (or free) file format converter to do this myself?

Note that it's meaningless to ask my web host to do anything more. In fact, when I told him someone I know had a similar sized media file put on their web site in a way that the html page plays i... Read more

Hi,

I downloaded a program two days ago, ASX to MP3 Converter, that promised to do convert an asx file to MP3. But then when I opened it and started up, there was a message that I needed to download another program. When I downloaded that second program, Windows Media formal library 9, I got malwared by the babylon search bar.

I realize now that I had the wrong Windows platform for the above-mentioned program, anyway. I am running Vista. Does anyone know of a program download for Vista that can convert an asx file to MP3?

Thank you.

I was wondering if there is a decent converter out there that will burn onto a DVD or convert to USB, music files or film files that can only be viewed on a computer to a standard DVD player?

I downloaded something called 'Super DVD creator', but it will only convert the first 5 minutes of anything you upload to the program to convert. I want to blast some music videos on my big TV via DVD (whether disc or USB) but all the decent hi-quality stuff I have, can only be viewed in the computer.

This program I downloaded costs $30.00 US, while I don't mind paying for it, I found via this forum that the best programs that work flawlessly are free, so if you can help, I'd be very appreciative!

Thanks!

Hello folks,

Over the years, I've built up a collection of about 10,000 songs in various formats (aac, m4a, mp3 are the main ones) and I want to convert them all to mp3.

This is easy enough to do and there are endless programs out there to do this for me but what I want is a program that will let me output the same bitrate as the input. This is because about half of my music was encoded at 320kbps and half at 128kbps and I don't want to transcode the 128 up, it'll only increase the file size without increasing the quality, I don't want to bring the 320kbps down because I want the high quality.

Any suggestions?

You'll probably get quite a few recommendations as there are a TON of them to choose from these days. Some are very good and others are complete garbage. After trying quite a few I opted to go with is AVS Video Tools 5. It has a number of useful pre-defined output profiles (and ability to create custom profiles) and can convert from a video file or DVD. Most any input/output format you could imagine is covered. It also includes integrated editing, cutting, joining, capture and DVD burning. To make a DVD you just click the "To DVD" button, load your video clip(s) and click "Convert". When the conversion is complete, the DVD burning window opens and you simply selcect a DVD profile (normal quality, high quality, etc.) and burn. Very easy to use and their support site includes animated tutorials for virtually all of it's functions. Tech support is very good as well. Last time I checked it was selling for $30 or thereabouts. Well worth a look IMHO

http://www.avsmedia.com/VideoTools/index.aspx

Another popular app is VSO ConvertX. This developer also offers great tech-support.

Hello,

I like to stream video content from my PC to my xbox 360, which works out great with AVI files, however with MP4 obviously it's a different story. I've tried many of the video conversion packages available, and the software tends to either hang, or doesn't support video conversion for all file types. I've recently tried Any Video Converter, which is recommended here in one of the sticky threads. Although the software works, it took at 720p MP4 video file, and when converting it to XVID (1280x720), the final product is grainy and nowhere near as nice as the original file.

Can anyone recommend a good all around Video Conversion program that handles most media types, and provides a solid final product?

Thank you!

Matt

I'm looking at buying a decent Hi-Def camcorder in the next few weeks. In my research, I've read conflicting views on what AVCHD editing software works (or doesn't work) with Windows 7 64-Bit.

I don't mind paying up to $100 for a decent editing suite. My questions are:

* Based on personal experience, what is the best (glitch-free) software for light to moderare AVCHD editing that works with Windows 7 64-bit?

* Will the software package do a decent job converting AVCHD files to a standard-def format (MPEG-4 or AVI) if needed?

* Will the software work at an acceptable speed on a system with the following: E8400 CPU, ATI 3850 DDR3 1GB Video, 4GB DDR2 800? If it makes a major difference, I can upgrade the system to a total of 8GB.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:need a good audio conversion software

For most audio files I'd recommend the open-source program Audacity but since there's nothing "open" about either the API or codec for WMA files, it doesn't support WMA conversions. That being said, I'd go with NCH Swift Audio File Converter. The regular version is freeware which should be more than enough for your needs.

The files I have are from a TV series, so there's a lot of files, 153 of them to be exact...so what could you guys recommend that would do what I need efficiently ?

thanks in advance for any helpful replies

Answer:Looking for Good Video Conversion Software

Not much will read RMVB. I think your only option is install the Real software or Real Alternative then go from there. I don't think you'll have an easy time finding an all-in-one tool that does all that you want. If you're adept with the command line, you could download an ffmpeg binary and give that a shot, but no guarantees that it'll be able to read the RMVB container. If it can, grab a copy of x264 and you should be good to go.

Also, you don't convert things to AVI as that's a container - you remux them. Also, when you say MPEG-4, I assume you mean AVC/H.264 and not the crappy MPEG-4 (A)SP. While you can convert to H.264, you're mixing up your terms. Using your case as an example, conversion is from one format (RM) to another (H.264), remuxing is from one container (RMVB) to another (AVI).

I need to find a good software whereby I can convert MIDI files to WAV files in order to burn audio CDs. I have seen a number of them online for around $30.00 but I haven't a clue as to what are good and what are hype.

I also need it to be user friendly, i.e., simple, clean interface. Thanks.

Answer:Looking for a good MIDI to WAV conversion software

Audicity should be able to do this. Its a free app.

I recently restored my computer using an image made before Switch was installed. I reinstalled Switch and then attempted to convert a WAV to MP3. Switch required me to use something called "Install on Demand" to install MP3ED.EXE. I did that and attempted to convert again. Then it required me to go through the "Install on Demand" thing again to install SOXDEC.EXE. I did that and attempted to convert again and Switch again wanted me to go through the "Install on Demand" thing again.

Ive been through the "Install on Demand" thing four times. How do I get Switch to stop this crap and start working?

This is a registered PURCHASED-WITH-MONEY program and it worked better before I gave them money.

okay i hope i explain this so everyone understands what im looking for help with. i have a computer software program that uses a external device. my problem is the external device is usb cable and teh software does not recogize usb it only recogonizes com 1, com2 and serial device. so im trying to figure out how to change usb to db9 connector. all adapaters i have seen so far are dp9 to usb male, i would need db9 to usb female but from what i can tell nobody makes one. i was thinking of a usb female to female then a usb male to db9 connector. but from things im reading it says it wont work.

any ideas anyone know if there is a way i can change a com1 to usb device?

sorry if i confused anyone with what i typed above

Answer:conversion cable/software problem.

What you appear to be trying to do is emulate a serial port to connect to a USB device. This is done with a driver on the machine that does the conversion for you.

What specific program and device are you talking about? Since the device is USB and the program only talks to serial ports, what makes you think the two are compatible?

Looking for either a decent software or technique that would allow me to convert .dvr-ms files (from windows media center) to divx, mp4, etc. I would like to retain most of the video quality, and all of the audio quality, as I have a lot of stand up recorded that I'd like to re-watch on mobile devices. Been searching all afternoon for a quick and easy to use audio converter. Specifically looking to convert mp3 to ac3 for use in DVDs. Would like to find software with a simple to navigate UI. Most of the ones I've found (and believe me, there are many) are trial versions with a paid version to follow. The catch is lots of these trial versions only allow for partial conversion or some type of vocal overdub (sort of like an audio watermark). I've got nothing against a paid version, but is there any reliable audio conversion software that someone could recommend using? Freeware or paid?

Answer:Looking for mp3 to ac3 audio conversion software (freeware or paid)

You can covert that with Audacity. Open source/Free..
UI isn't all that simple, but all you'd have to basically do is:

Open mp3/import, export as ac3...
Use beta for Win 7 - Audacity 1.3.14
Program is in continual Beta status..

Hi,

I've got a bunch of +/- 1gb Quicktime (mov/mp4) files on my computer that I would like to burn to dvd to watch on a dvd player hooked up to a tv. I tried using a free conversion program called DVD Flick but several dvd's I've burned with it had audio/visual sync problems, even when I don't do anything on the computer while the program is running.

What are some of the best paid/free video converter softwares? There are just so many that it's hard to tell what's good and what's not.

I also have Corel VideoStudio 12 that came with my computer and tried to convert with it but it crashes. I started the conversion and it seemed to work ok but my computer ended up going to sleep. When I woke it the program was at 45% and seemed to keep going just fine but I hit 'esc' to end the program because I figured I would just wait and start over in an orderly fashion and I didn't know if the computer going to sleep would have messed anything up.

So I set my computer to not sleep and started the conversion again. This time the program crashes after not very long by giving me an error message saying the program has quit. I restarted the computer and tried again, same problem. This is the error message details, any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

We have a bunch of software that's licensed on a per seat of floating license levels and we need to be able to store where we bought it, who the vendor contact is, how much it was, what our entitlement is, how much the annual renewal is, when it's time to renew, and most importantly we also need to be able to include the install media (disk image or installer), as well as the license server install, any license files, and any other documentation that goes along with it.

Any of you aware of any software that does keep track of this stuff but doesn't cost an arm and a leg? We have maybe ~50 different licenses we need to keep track of so this isn't some large enterprise operation.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor, 2 GB RAM and Windows XP/Pro SP 2, InDesign CS3 (v. 5.0.1), and Word 2002 SP 3.

Problem description:

a) I have tried converting InDesign documents and Word documents with long hyperlinks to PDF. I have documents with some hyperlinks that are very long and require more than one line. The hyperlinks that I create in InDesign or Word that require more than one line look OK after conversion to PDF (using the Export command in InDesign), but, if I hover the mouse over the link in the PDF, all the characters in the URL on the second line are missing, and the link doesn’t work. I first discovered this using Acrobat Professional 7. Yesterday I downloaded a trial version of Acrobat Professional 8 (8.1.0), and I still have the problem.

Yes, I know I can create a hyperlink character style in InDesign with the “no break” feature enabled. However, that can result in appearance and text flow problems.

b) Furthermore, I tried to convert a Word document with a long hyperlink to PDF (using the Word Print command), and the same problem occurs.

To make matters worse, when I try to convert any Word document to PDF using the “Adobe PDF/Convert to Adobe PDF” menu item, I get this message:

“The Acrobat PDFMaker server could not be loaded. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?”

I tried the repair mode. Then I tried it again from the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel. That did not solve either problem. R... Read more

The TwonkyVision site shows all the uPnP devices that are compatible with this sort of streaming, and also shows a couple of compatible software programs:

Nero ShowtTime
Windows Media Player 11

I am serving the files from a QNAP TS-209 Pro that has Twonky embedded.

Nero Showtime shows the streamed files just fine. So does the Xbox 360.

But for the life of me I can't figure out how to get WMP 11 to see the stream. I can't even figure out how to LOOK for the stream.

Just curious what other members use? I figure it is time to update my burning software since I been using it since 2008.

Hi there,
Firstly I would like to say sorry if this is in the wrong area as I am not to sure where it should be!

Anyway, I have a average custom built pc i am using as a server to host games such as Call of Duty, Unreal and lots more. It also hosts a Web server . For file downloading. Please bare in mind this is all for local LAN use and not on the internet.

The Specs are:
Intel Core Duo E6700
2 x 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz Memory
ATX Tower Case With 400w PSU
Intel G41 & ICH7 Chipset Motherboard
500GB western digital SATA drive 7200 rpm
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

Now on to my question, I would also like to use this as a media server for my movie and film collection. I am thinking of investing in a RAID 5 card and 4 x 2Tb hard drives (So i have a little redundancy)

I want to stream the media to PC's, Laptops and TV's throughout my house. (I have the network infrastructure already setup for this)

The question is about software to use. In the past I have used Windows Media Player and Center but these are quite limited as to what they can do. I recently heard about Windows Home Server, and was wondering what peoples thoughts where to this? It has a decent list of useful features. I would plan to use this is an virtual environment on the current server. What are your thoughts on this?
