Some applications fail to load, but no error message displayed

Question: Some applications fail to load, but no error message displayed

Once in a while, I would try to load an application, for example, a Setup.exe file to install Nero, but the mouse loading icon would display for a second or two, and then go back to normal again without the application starting. No error message whatsoever.

When I check the task manager, I can see the process has started, but I can't actually access the application. What could be the problem?

BTW, I'm using Windows XP.

Preferred Solution: Some applications fail to load, but no error message displayed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Some applications fail to load, but no error message displayed

This is happening to me as well, but with almost every single application.

The message ?Fail to load module C:\Users\Ron Wolpa\AppData\Local\Icdrsoft\hpboidps.DLL? pops up just after Win 8 starts up.
It started to happen after AVG anti virus cleaned a possible threaten.
I was about to remove from registry then , before doing stupid things , I made up my mind to post a message here ; it is located @ HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENT VERSION > RUN under the name ICDRSOFT and data : regsvr32.exe "C:\Users\Ron Wolpa\AppData\Local\Icdrsoft\hpboidps.DLL".
If deleting from registry is not the solution what else can be done ?
Thank you for your support.

Answer:fail to load error message just after windows 8 starts up

It is possible that the threat was a false positive and warrants more investigation.
Select a system restore point prior to when the problem started.

Hey Guys,

Just recently I have being receiving error messages when I start up my laptop every day.
There has never been any problems with my laptop until now, although it doesn't really affect the laptop at all it still pops up?

I get an error message when I move to the desktop that says "BIOS Load Fail" but then i can close it and nothing happens to my computer. I am running Windows 8.1 and I just installed the new Toshiba Service Station Apps. I also checked to see if the BIOS was up to date, and it was.

Any help here? It would be much appreciated, thanks.

Just an update: I just tried to open up my GPU tweaking software, and it can't open because the Error Message shows up. But my CPU monitor still works.

> I get an error message when I move to the desktop that says "BIOS Load Fail" but then i can close it and nothing happens to my computer. I am running Windows 8.1 and I just installed the new Toshiba Service Station Apps

Could it be possible that this alert (message) is coming from the Service Station utility?

The service station software allows your computer to automatically search for TOSHIBA software updates or other alerts from toshiba that are specific to your computer system and its programs. When enabled, this application periodically transmits to our servers a limited amount of system information required to perform these updates or alerts.

Probably the message ?BIOS load fail? means that service station was not able to download (load) the information about the latest available BIOS.
From my point of few this is not a serious problem. If you want try to uninstall the service station tool from the system just to check if this would cancel the notification

Hello, I've recently been trying to download and install Windows Live Mail. That part was easy, however, upon opening the program, I receive error messages. The first one says, "Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close, your most recent changes may not be saved." Then another error box is displayed stating, "Contacts failed to load. Windows Live Mail is incorrectly configured, please re-install." I've uninstalled and reinstalled this program several times, but still not sure why I am receiving these errors. I did edit the registry, deleting the keys for all Windows Live folders insuring a complete uninstall, then reinstalled a fresh download of Windows Live Mail but STILL got the same error messages. I also tried to clear the Live Contacts Store/Cache by renaming the Live contacts folder so a new one would be replaced. Still nothing...This is getting frustrating...Anyone have any other suggestions?  Thanks!

I have a Dell 500 mhz system with Windows 2000 Professional and Zone alarm firewall. I also have Internet Explorer 6.0 installed. I also have Iclean running to help clean cookies. Recently (beginning this past weekend), when I access Juno (my usual ISP), I get the page cannot be displayed error message when I log on. When I try to type in a website on the address bar or use my favorites, I get the same result. Page cannot be displayed! When I reduce the screen, I can see the timer running showing that I am connected to the internet. While I can still receive and send emails, I just cannot acces any websites.

I have tried to reboot at least 5 times on different days and there is no change in the result. I also loaded one of those free cds that i picked up in the store for AOL. I can receive and send emails, but once again when AOL logs on, the page cannot be displayed message appears.

Can anyone help? I had hoped to work from home tomorrow to be with my kids, but can't if I cannot connect with my office. Thanks for any assistance.

P.S. I have my Windows 2000 Professional install disk, but cannot locate the authentication code to use it. Is there any way to determine from my system what is or otherwise recover it? Thanks again.

I don't know about your other problem, but I can help you get your win2k code back. Download Aida32 from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php and transfer it to the win2k PC (it appears you have other ways of getting online). When you install it, go to the "operating system" tree, the "operating system" sub-tree, and then in the "field" value find "Product Key" - this is your win2k product ID.

So I have a problem with my hp notebook. One night, I turned on my pc and saw an error message saying

Now, I'm not a computer fanatic and I wasn't knowledgeable about what it was so I panicked a bit. I tried a lot of things, even resetting my hp notebook but nothing changed. I looked up on solutions but none came to what I was experiencing. I performed diagnostics test which were all passed. So I'm wondering; How do I get back my system board ct number cause when I went into system information, in-line with system board ct number were the words Hewlett - Packard, and it was also in line with system ID.

Also, I believe that because of it being missing, my battery/ ac power supply is experiencing problems for when I plug in the ac power supply when the computer is off, it shows that the computer is charging by the LED indicator being orange. However, when I turn it on while the ac power supply is plugged in, the LED indicator becomes white(white means its fully charged) but it is not fully charged and the pc is not charging. Also, I believe due to it being missing, my pc is operating slower than before.... Read more

Ever since I have updated to IE 11, I have problems printing coupons from Printable & Downloadable Coupons. Grocery, Health, Beauty | redplum.com. I have tried all their suggestions on their help site. This is what I have done:
1. Temporary files and cookies were deleted.
2. Uninstall Java 7 update 45.
3. Installed Java 7 update 45 again from www.java.com.
4. Closed Internet browser.
5. Went back to the website www.redplum.com. Selected a coupon to print.
6. Here is where things go wrong. All that comes up is "webpage cannot be displayed." You are supposed to be able to install the printing software at this point.
PLEASE NOTE: I did not have problems with this until IE 11. I am running Windows 7 on an HP desktop.

Please help.

Answer:Error message: WEBPAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED

I just visited RedPlum, clicked a coupon to print, clicked Print and the bottom of the page said, "New users may have to install this software". I have IE11. You may have to disable the popup blocker for the site.

Now having said that, I tell my wife all the time if installing software is needed to print a coupon, it ain't worth having, it's sneakware, Possibly Unwanted Program, or PUP. If a vendor want you to have a coupon it should simply display it and use IE11's print function, no software needed.

I am using Windows XP and Internet Explorer version 6 with a DSL connection. I am able to open my web browser and use it for a few minutes and it works just fine. Then, I start to get the an error message that says This Page Cannot Be Displayed. Sometimes I get a different error message that says Action Canceled. If I refresh the screen enough times it might work, however it doesn't always. Also, if I close Internet Explorer and logoff as a user in XP, when I log back on and reopen the browser it will work for a very short time again. I do not know what is going on and it is getting very frustrating. I have already tried clearing the cache, deleting cookies, clearing history and it didn't help. I have also run SpyBot, but the problem persists. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Can anyone help please. I used a junk remover programme and uninstalled it along with 2 other computer boosting programmes, I now cannot load any office application or Word. The Windows Installer loads a pop up stating "preparing for installation" it hangs and can often refresh itself several times, over a couple of minutes before either completing a task successfully or giving an "error" message. This pop up is appearing for many different applications including Outlook Express, here it takes ages just to load a new message window and spell checker always comes up with an "error". I'm using someone else's PC and it's a XP home edition with 248 RAM. The only thing I've done to the system is yesterday Windows update prompted me to install the SP3 update since it finished downloading. I went ahead and did it and it SEEMS that after that things started going wrong; the only other thing I could think of is an 1 click maintainance done by Glary utilities.

Now whenever I shut down any application, it doesn't close properly. Instead, the error pop up comes up telling me the application wasn't closed down properly and would I like to send the error report. Of course either button I press it crashes the application.

For instance, if I had two instances of IE running and finished with one of them and closed it down, this error would crash both. I tried system restore and in normal Windows environment SR wouldn't initiate and shut down by the error message. I then tried system restore in Safe Mode but now the error messages are still present even if the system's now rolled back to SP2.

I also have problem installing new applications.

Help! I want to fix this as this is someone else's computer.

Thanks tons in advance.

Hi all-
I first encountered this problem while working on my screenplay in Final Draft, a screenplay program: "Final Draft has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience."
After it happened several times, I figured the file was corrupted, so I converted it to a word document. Then I got the same error message, saying that "Office 97 etc. etc".
Today the computer shut down on me while using the Internet and Adobe Acrobat. Same error message, different applications. I'm losing it! I have so much work to do, and everything keeps shutting down on me.

Out of desperation I tried doing a System Restore to about a month ago, but I don't know yet how that's working.

Any of you kind folk know whats going on, and how to help?

Many thanks,
Susan

Answer:Same Error Message In Multiple Applications

How long has this problem been happening?

Right click your "My Computer" icon on your desktop, select "properties"
Click on the "Advanced " tab
Select "Settings"
In the box that opens. "Startup and Recovery" remove the check mark to the left of "Automatically Restart"

The next time your computer does a restart it will show you a BSOD with an error code and other information which will help in diagnosing the cause.

Please post that information so we can help further.

Answer:error message running applications

Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions. What?s annoying about this message is that sometimes it has nothing to do with permissions at all! Here?s a couple of possible ways to fix it, depending on your system.Note: First, restart your computer in Safe Mode (only XP and Vista) and see if you can open the file or programs in question. If so, it?s not a ?real? permission issue, it?s a program or process on your computer that is giving the error.Method 1 ? Windows Server 2003 Terminal ServicesFirstly, if you?re running into this issue on a Windows Server box running Terminal Services, your problem can be narrowed down to one or two things. The best solution that has worked for most people is to simply uninstall Internet Explorer enhanced security configuration. If that doesn?t work, another thing you can do is to add the server name to the list of Trusted Intranet Sites in IE. //servernameMake sure to log off and back on in order for it to take effect. If you?re not running a server, read on.Method 2 ? Turn off anti-virus or firewallIf you are having this issue in Windows XP or Windows Vista, then your problem is probably related to an actual permission issue.Norton Internet 200X, Bitdefender, AVG anti-virus, Trend Micro 200X can all cause this problem. If you have any of these programs installed, make sure to disable them and test it you can run programs, open files, etc.If so, then you?ll have to ... Read more

Hi!

I bought my notebook last weekend and I can't seem to do the BIOS update (from 1.30 to 1.40). I am using Vista 32 Home Premium SP1 (which came pre-installed in the laptop) and after downloading, unpacking and running the file provided by the TOSHIBA website (PO10140M.exe) I get the following error message:

C:\Users\Dado\AppData\Local\Temp\iscA516tmp\insyde flash.exe could not be executed.

I am sure this is the right file, because this was the one mentioned, after filling every field in the BIOS update search screen.

I don't understand what is wrong, since the laptop is brand new.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I left my laptop alone and on for a couple of hours and when I came back to it displayed an error message under windows boot manager.
It says windows failed to start and a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. It asks me to insert my windows installation CD, and if I don?t have the CD then to ring for assistance but unfortunately I can?t really find a number at the moment.

It also reads this:

Does anybody know how to deal with this, or has this happened to anybody before?

Tried to run system restore but the 11-15 one disappeared from the list when I tried to run it and now just shows the only restore point as Windows Update Critical Update from today which fails. Startup Repair says no problems.

Any suggestions?

Sam

I have had a continuing problem that pops a Devices or Applications Disabled error message of "'CD Recording Software' will cause Windows to become unstable. Click here for additional information" when I boot my PC. Clicking does not do anything but close the error dialog box. I tried to load an old version of "Easy CD Creator" and it stopped me part way through (just after my trial version of "Nero" stopped). InCD still works, so I have not worried about it.

This is just a nagging problem - I think. I have had it for over 6 months and not worried about it, but now I am having other problems.

I have run "SFC /scannow" and it reports no problems.

I have a Mustek 600 III EP Plus parallel port scanner that I am trying to install to a Dell Optiplex GX260. The  scanner was working fine on my "old" computer. I have researched and read  several suggestions; none of which helped. I have checked and ECP mode is enabled. When I try to use it, I get the message " fail load".  When I go to scanners and cameras, it does not appear there. It shows no scanner at all. I have reinstalled it 3 times.  I hope some one has the solution to this. I also downloaded a new driver.

Answer:Scanner message "fail load"

What OS are you running? Have you got the right drivers for that OS? Is it the same OS as on the old computer? In particular, have you moved from Windows 98/ME to Windows 2000/XP/Vista? parallel port scanners are pretty old nowadays, I had an Agfa one about 7 years ago, it never worked properly with XP, kept vanishing. I think you may have to bite the bullet and get a modern scanner. That Mustek was a new model some time around 1996!

Hello,

I have recently bought a Satellite A210-183 with an AMD Turion 64X2 processor , ATI X1200 Graphics card , 2 GB memory , 1,3 build in webcam and may other features.

After 1 day use and as I had tried all features and worked normally , when I tried to open my webcam , I had the message " GRAPH RENDER FAIL "..

I restart the laptop and one time worked normally and other time showed the same message. I decided to return the labtop back to the shop for changing it as there is a term at this shop that change the machine within 7 days after buying it.

Certainly the shop changes the labtop with a new one. When I started again to install some of my programs on the labtop such as ( msn & yahoo messenger , Nero , office , Sony ericsson Pc Suite and 1-2 other programs and as I had already tried to use the webcam and worked normally ) after some restarting I receive the same message when I try to open the webcam...." GRAPH RENDER FAIL "

Do everyone knows the reason why I received this message and I cannot open the webcam??I get on crazy and I do not think that the problem comes from the labtop.Maybe something else such as a operation program ....

Please someone with something similar helps me .

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I've spent hours trying to install the Microsoft Home Use Program on my personal notebook PC at home with no success. My workplace enables me to purchase a licensed copy at a cheaper rate to put on my home computer, whilst I remain employed by them.

I click on the link to http://hup.microsoft.com/.
Select the country "Australia".
Enter my corporate email address.
I enter the program code that work gave me.
I check my work email account and receive the email successfully.
I open the email which says "congratulations, you are eligible to purchase the home use program for $28".
I click on the green "Buy Now" button.

Then, this is where it all goes wrong.... Instead of taking me to the screen that allows me to purchase my license/product key and download the software to my PC, the screen reverts back to the previous one which asks me for my corporate email address and program code! I am going around in circles! There are no error messages.

I have tried turning off the antivirus program and I have tried cleaning and fixing my drives. I have a brand new ASUS notebook PC model PRO50G with stickers on it saying windows vista and intel pentium.

Can anyone please help me to install the home use program??! Thanks:)

Answer:Microsoft Enterprise 2007 Home Use Program Installation Fail, No Error Message

Regards,
A few days ago I had a pop up about personal antivirus. I thought it was a windows update (stupid me) and installed it. I ran a few spybot and virus programs and had it all removed. but now the website pages for certain places do not work: mostly for sites where I have to log in. Any help is appreciated. THANKS

Answer:page cannot be displayed login fail

Tough luck. You can always try to reset IE:

Control Panel-->Internet OPtions-->Advanced-->Reset

This will take out all plug-ins, cookies, saved data, history, EVERYTHING, and return IE to default state.

If it still happens after that, you may not have cleared all aspects of the virus.

Hi all

New here and looking for some help. Issue is that when you startup the win 7 notebook it all runs as normal. As soon as you open an application such as the broadband connection software or even task manager they will not display properly.
The tabs have no text in them but you can select them but no information is listed.

any ideas?

Thanks
Paul

Answer:display issues on applications where no text is displayed

This sounds like a virus or malware issue. If the hardware was at fault it would mean no display, or funny display behaviour, but not of the "logical" sort that you described. I suggest starting with MalwareBytes and using it to identify and remove threats. Other good free anti-virus offerings include !Avast Anti - Virus and Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'm not sure you can install it on a new hd from recovery disc. The recovery disc is linked to a 'hidden' partition on original hd which, when instigated, will revert to factory settings.

My freind has a dell computer with windows XP, which was running very slow. I carried out some maintenance i.e. uninstalled some unnecessary programs. I also ran 'msconfig' and unchecked some programs under the startup tab. Now when the computer starts, I am getting a very strange message to the effect of:-

'cannot load ■■■■■■■ '

Thats right a bunch of squares or ascii characters. I clicked 'o'k and got a similar message another three times. The computer is working but obviously not too pleased with the error message.

Any ideas about this ? Many thanks.

I don't know how or after what event, but everytime an application is asked to be started an error message that reads, "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.", shows up. Programs such as Word, Exel, and Power Point are getting the same message. All *.exe extension files are getting this message; it's very frustrating! The only way to bypass this is to right click the icon an select Run as administrator. It then ask to confirm if I have started this request and then finally the application opens up.

Maybe give Reg Cleaner a run if you have it installed.

I'm running Windows XP PRO - sometimes, after booting up, my applications will not load. The timer comes up for a few seconds, then goes away. Some minutes later, the application appears in the task bar - several times, if I've made several attempts to start the application, such as MS Word. I was advised to run Scandisk but can't find it anywhere.

Answer:applications sometimes fail to start

"Scandisk" is called chkdsk in XP.To run it open My Computer, right click the C drive and select Properties. On the Tools tab run Error-checking. Probably worth defragmenting afterwards as well.

Hello!
I have just upgraded my friends computer from win 98 to win 98 SE. All is going reasonably well but I can't seem to get past an error to reload her Hp psc 750 all in one (printer, scanner, copier I think!LOL) When I try to load the software an error message comes up that says "Error cannot find HPolngo7.dll" At this point the install aborts. Any ideas on what I can do or where I can go to get the missing dll?
One other question I have. Think I have the answer to it after much time searching on the internet today but just want to double check with you all. When the computer is started up we get an error message that says"RUNDLL cannot find the file Loading C:\progra~newdot~newdot~2 DLL. So far what I have found says it is spyware. Is that right?
Thanks very much for your help.
Sincerely,
Dorothy E

Answer:Error message when trying to load a printer

1) Newdot~2 is spyware. Get a copy of Spybot and scan your system.

2) Don't use the install cd that came with the printer. Go to HP's website and grab the latest copy of the drivers.

*Note* The driver file is approximately 50MB so if you are not on broadband either order the Cd or be prepared for a long wait =:0

Also, HP's can be picky. Follow the instructions exactly.
If that doesn't help post back.

I was asked to look at a computer. It is over a year old. The girl claims she was messing with her computer (not sure what that means) but she claims she was prompted to put in the Cd that came with her e-machine. Apparently, earlier in the week, she had her cd-rom drive opened and the dog hit it by accident. Her complaint was the cd-rom door wouldn't open. I took off the side and the front panel. Pressed the start button. A screen came up and said about scanning the system for errors and that it would repair them and not effect the files. Ok, I did that. Then I got a black screen with the following message:
! ! Qcx0000034 ! ! 251/69108 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms)

What's amazing is that the door opened without a problem for me. So there was nothing wrong with the cdrom door. Now this is the first time I've really had to deal with Vista because I've heard too many bad things about it. So does anyone out there have any idea what this code means?
The computer is over a year old and it is out of warranty or else I would have told them to call the manufacturer.

Yesterday after installing Google desktop...my computer began to snag and hang and then it just froze up. I rebooted it and now my desktop won't load...no icons....no start menu, no tool bar, etc...just the wall paper and nothing else.

An error box pops up saying that Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close, then nada....just the wallpaper.

The error says:

faulting application explorer.exe version 6.002900.3156, faulting module deskbar.dll, version 2.0.0.12, faulting address 0x000060sf

I got here by doing ctrl + alt + del and then chose Mozilla foxfire.....

Under task manager, explorer.exe is not showing, so I can't end the process there

I tried to restart in safe mode and do a system restore, but when I got there, it said that I could not restore to any date other than today's date?

I can't think of anything else to do. Also, when I restarted in safe mode...all my icons are there.

Any advice would be welcome.

TIA!
ETA: Please....16 views and no one has any thoughts here??? I just need to know how to fix the error.

I did run RegEdit in safe mode and deleted a bunch of stuff related to the google tool bar and rebooted, but still have no desktop, icons, toolbar, etc. showing....only wallpaper.

I have a small LAN containing three Windows 7 systems, all of which experience the same symptoms that some installs of applications not necessarily the same one create this problem: On some installs a padlock appears on application folder/files and the Programs and Features control panel icon has generic icon and installed size is missing. Using the Properties | Security in Explorer display shows No permissions have been assigned for this object. in the Group or user names block. Obviously the install process is failing, but in most cases no error is recognized until the application is activated.
Ive tried restoring the system to a virgin state, from WHS image, but the problem reappears.
For many of the install I use Remote Desktop via an XP Pro system, a haw; it happen with local installs as well.
Ive searched online for similar problems without success; it must be my search parameters.
The Windows 7 systems were installed from boxed DVDs, update to the latest patch level, MS apps Office, Live Essentials, Windows Security Essential, etc. with all updates applied. Then the process of install necessary apps/utilities required; this was the state of the restored image. My plan is to install subsequent apps until it fails.

When I am on the internet and just looking at regular sites like yahoo or local news sites using IE I get strange error messages like:

"Sorry, we couldn't find http://%24pixelhost/serve/fb/pdc%3FuatFilter%3Dtrue"

I get different messages but it always starts Sorry, we couldn't find http://......

The page is mostly loaded then I get the message and a list of suggested sites. Its not always pixelhost but this is the most recent error I recieved. It almost seems to be random because I can not make it happen but it happens enough to be annoying.

Any suggestions would be great.

Answer:Web pages don't fully load before error message

This looks like DNS redirection.

The concept is whenever a webserver reports Error 404 (page not found), many ISPs
will intercept the Error 404 and reproduce what they think is a user friendly help reply
which clearly it AINT!

Suggest you change the DNS settings in your router or manually on the PC itself
to 8.8.8.8 as the first DNS entry - - this is the google DNS
and a request for http://www.googleme.com/ will reply

Code:
Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.googleme.com
For page content like scripts and graphics, the missing webresource is just ignored

This is a Sony Viao Laptop. It is not equiped with an integrated floppy disk drive. The CDrom does not work, however it is equiped with an external CDrom. All bios settings have been reset to factory specs but its does not boot XP. always get msg "cannot load operating system" The question is this. It seem the harddrive may have been formated and there is no way to use a startup disk or the recovery cd's to reinstall XP. Is there anything that can be done? Network to another sys, etc. Any ideas? This puzzles me. I am worried that the computer does not recognize the external cd rom and recovery cannot proceed. Infact, I do not know how to install the neccessary drivers for the external cdrom much less installing XP. I want to try everything short of replacing the factory cdrom which broke. (read expensive, prolly can replace it with labor). Any Ideas? Humorous comments expected.

Hi there and welcome!

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?? Perhaps your browser has been hijacked or corrupted in some way. If it's possible, see if you can provide a little more detail or insight to this problem. (Did IE ever work properly.....what else is running or active as far as programs when this happens...etc. etc.) One of our experts may have you run and produce a HijackThis log for further diagnosis but don't do it unless someone specifically asks you to.

Good Luck !

I had to restart my system when it hung while writing to CD using Adaptec 'Easy CD Creator'.

The system came up after hard reboot, but most applications fail to start. I've used Windows 'Safe Mode' to post this.

Except for Windows Explorer, Task Bar, and some applications running in the background (system tray), all other applications (Firefox, IE, Outlook, etc.,) fail to start -- even simple Windows commads such as command shell (cmd.exe), desktop properties or msconfig.msc fail to start. No errors are thrown.

Note: Task bar showed firefox process running, but the browser never popped up.

It seems like there's something wrong with explorer.exe.

There are few errors and warnings I captured in the event log (using Safe Mode, the event viewer wouldn't open in normal mode):

Hello:I've been experiencing multiple issues on my Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD Sempron 2.31 GHz Processor running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with SP3. The machine has 2 GB of RAM and a 40GB HDD. It uses an NVDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 display adapter.Initially the display adpater would unexpectedly fail resulting in a system lockup and requiring the machine to be restarted. However, another more serious issue developed the a few days ago. The appearance of the Google home page changed and the system became very slow so I suspected something and attempted to run my Norton Internet Security software. It needed a new subscription, so I logged on to attempt to renew, but as soon as I opened Windows IE 7, it immediately shut down. Shortly after that, I received the following message "RPC service terminated unexpectedly. This shutdown was intiated by NT Authority \system." So, I tried to renew again using Google Chrome and it failed the same way. Finally, I used Safari. I was able to upgrade to Norton 360 4.0 and let it do it's thing. I also ran MBAM and followed the instructions it gave. The system is running a lot faster now. However, when I restart I receive at least three (sometimes more) messages that an application has failed to initialize. Sometimes it is one instance of rundll32.exe, sometimes it's a few, and some times it is all the apps in my system tray. Additionally, I still get the error that started it all: "RPC terminated un... I had installed "Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0" and it worked fine. I tried to use it several months later and it wouldn't start up, stating that it could not load any audio drivers. It suggested a reinstall, which I have tried several times, and still does not work. All other programs related to audio seem to work fine. Thought that maybe some virus junk messed it up somewhere inbetween my first use and subsquent tries. Anything in the log look like it could be related? After several days of frustration I am turning to the experts for help with this error message/ possible virus.
this is on a Dell PC, OS: Windows XP Media Edition, Service Pack 3

Last week started getting the following error message upon start up
"The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\POWRPROF.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I checked AVAST, it was stopped and could not be restarted I have the(most recent version of Avast). Tried to load Boot Scan of Avast, but after trying to enter the options for boot scan, Avast wouldn't "take" the options and nothing happened. Could not repair AVAST from Control Panel.
Downloaded the Avast uninstaller to uninstall Avast uninstalled Avast
Downloaded a new copy of Avast, when I try to install it I get the same POWRPROF.dll error message.

Using MSCONFIG, I clicked startup and chose "Disable All" so that nothing loads automatically, (previously when all the installed programs were loaded at startup the Error message started every time I turned on the PC

Updated and ran Malewarebytes, perfomed Quick Scan scan found two problems, one a virus one a cookie issue, Malewarebytes deleted both for me.

Tried using Restore from main menu (Accessories, System Tools) cold not access Restore.

Today I downloaded Avira (which I had been using on this comp before Avast), Avira downloaded fine, performed a scan automatically which found noth... Read more

Answer:powrprf.dll error message, avast and other programs won't load

Might be fixed, after running CC cleaner and Glary to clean up the registry and delete temp files (over 2000 registry problems found in Glary!), I uninstalled Avira, and copied the POWRPROF.dll file from my other XP machine, I renamed the one on the problem computer with "OLD" and copied the new one in the system32 location.

I was then able to successfully install Avast, so maybe somehow that one file was corrupt....

I will now schedule an Avast boot scan just to be safe.

Hello,

I was running the "windows live onecare safety scanner" (which doesn't seem to be particularly safe to me!) on my desktop and when I came back to check on the scan I found the following error message on my black screen:

"Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as: load needed DLLs for kernel. Please contact your support person to report this problem."

XP home is not able to boot, not even in safe mode. Every time I start the computer I get the same error message.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Herringtrader
