Preferred Solution: Revert to History URGENT HELP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, after decades of using Windows I've just discovered the single most destructive command... The CTRL+Z... Yup, that's right.

So here's the problem. I always leave my computer on 24/7, and today I was in a application trying to undo something, but I didn't notice the application was out of focus and I was in fact "undoing" several actions I've made in the last days... Absolute disaster - I accidentally deleted Gigabytes of information and I've no way of getting them back... The worst part is, I don't even know for certain what I've deleted, as I don't exactly recall what I did in the last few days.

My question is, is there a history/log of the undo actions? I've already checked Event Viewer and there is nothing there.

Regards.

Hey! I was trying to follow this guide
Stop/Prevent Windows 7 From Deleting Thumbnail Cache

But things went horribly wrong and it ended up like this:

Is there a way I can revert it to default values? I'm really scared! (I'm using Windows 8.1) Needless to say my thumbnails are resetting every time I access a folder

Answer:(urgent!!) How to revert Advanced Security settings?

Oh well I fixed it. I don't know how I did it though as I wasn't able to edit permissions and whatnot. I actually have no clue, I kept closing and reopening the that Window because I was nervous but it just appeared like it was before. No clue actually

Apologies - the Urgent in this is only because I'm unsure whether any action may need to be done before I close down in about 6 hours or so.

Basically my problem began in Picasa 3 where I watched a short vid then decided to change the filename. That done I closed the preview & went back to the main program where I discovered that Picasa had somehow decided I wanted the entire folder of images renamed so it has worked through the 500+ images and renamed each one as Filename001, Filename002, Filename003 and so on which as you can appreciate is now causing somewhat of a major headache for me. It would take me a good few hours I would rarely have to go through and rename each one manually, so my question basically is - is there any method or program that can undo the action as I can't find any means of doing so from within Picasa. All other options I've found in my searches are mainly to achieve pretty much the same i.e. bulk rename as Name1, Name2 etc so are of little help.

Anyone any suggestions what else I could try?

Answer:Urgent help needed - how to revert a bulk image name process?

I assume you don't have a Backup to fall back on. I use these two bulk renaming tools. You can see if they help. This is drop dead simple to use - http://www.fauland.com/af5.htm
This one has a more complicated interface but a couple other options - http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108/

I've switched my laptop to safe mode so I can run a virus checker but now I can't log onto my machine. In safe mode my machine will not recognise my logon password that I normally use to connect both to mainframe and as a laptop.

I change to safe mode by Running msconfig, then selecting safe mode.

I've tried hitting F8 and selecting normal mode but it just keeps reverting to safe mode.

My systems guys are saying they cannot get my machine out of safe mode as there was no logon password loaded on my original machine build???

Can anyone advise me how I can restore normal mode before my systems guys wipe my C drive and start re-building my machine. Urgent help would be very much appreciated!

Answer:Windows XP Safe Mode - How do I revert to Norma Mode - URGENT HELP PLS!!

Hi Neil, Robert here, ok just a couple of questions to clarify things a bit:
1. are you able to get to your desktop in safe mode then get into your start menu and typing in the run menu the "msconfig.exe" option? (Basically backtracking what you did before the incident)

2. If not have you tried to boot back up to the F8 list and select the "boot up last known good configuration...etc" ...something like that.. option?

But more importantly this question comes to mind, what made it necessary to boot into safe mode on your desktop just to do a virus scan? But most importantly, was there anything else that you may have done during the time of this incident or immediately beforehand that might have otherwise caused your angst? I am simply trying to get a better understanding of what exactly happened as this will better determine a possible solution than to just proceed to an extreme one ie. reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows on your laptop. Let me know how it goes, if not, you can email me or post your questions if you have any problems at all. Good luck, Neil! =)

Hi,

I always delete history in by clicking wrench menu >> settings >> clear history >> from beginning and tick all options..

I just noticed it has still stored all histories of mine for many days that I can see when I click wrench menu >> "history"

I tried deleting again but still it was there.

I managed to delete it finally manually by deleting the userdata folder in the path C:/documents and settings/users/username/local settings/application data/google/chrome/user data

But I wonder if this is something virus in my computer or a bug in browser itself.

Answer:[SOLVED] chrome do not clear history but it shows history cleared

Have you considered using ccleaner to do that stuff? I wouldn't touch google chrome if you paid me. Which is funny because my employers use it but I personally would not at home as think it is very flaky, very unsecure and buggy.

So it would not suprise me that there is some sort of bug which is not deleting the history but I cant really help you as I dont use it. I am sure others can though.

Actually I'm trying to do exactly what is proposed here, and file history is not behaving as expected. I restored a full image I took a few months ago, which worked great. When I tried to restore the intervening file history, though, it only sees the three month old restore point, and gives me no option to restore the more recent files I can see are on the history drive. I could move them by hand but they now have the dates appended to the file names, and it will be a huge task.

Any ideas to get file history to see the more recent files on the history drive?

Answer:get file history to see more recent files on history drive

When you restored File History lost the cross references for the newer "changes". You can only do it manually, All you have to do is go to the last known or good date in File History's files and use copy & replace. If you have 7Zip you can even set it up in dual panel to navigate easier.:

I would like to be able to either turn off and / or clear the history pane that appears on the right side of each contact in the People App. I've searched and searched and cannot find any way to accomplish this. I must be missing something simple? Surely there are times when most of us would like to delete or clear the history.

Also, I notice that some of my contacts show something in the history pane, while others with whom I've had recent contact do not. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a bug? My wife's computer shows history going back weeks, while mine only appears to have history of a day or two. Another inconsistency. Why?

Thanks.

Answer:People App - How to turn off history or clear + history inconsistency

I've noticed the same problem. My People app history consisted of emails that were sent using my oultook.com account. I found that deleting the sent emails from the Outlook.com SENT folder also eliminated the emails showing up in the People App history. Not an ideal way to clear the history, but it works. Hope this helps.

Is there a way to have start->run history kept while not keeping a history of the recently launched programs from the menu?

I know under the properties you have "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start menu", but this is what controls both.
I'm figuring theres probably some registry entry that will let me control them individually.

Answer:Remember start->run history, but not program history

I think that feature was removed.

Is there anything more annoying that IE's history? Netscape 4 had a beautiful history window that showed page titles, URLs, first time visited, last time visited, and number of times visited, sortable by any of those fields. IE only shows page addresses, forces them to be broken down by days and then sorted by URL, with no other real options. I was hoping that IE6 would fix this disastrous history, but no luck: IE6 now allows you to sort in visit order, but you can only do that for today's pages (so as soon as it hits midnight, you can no longer see the pages you saw five minutes ago in order), and you can't see any pages at all from previous days in that manner (why they make arbitrary day cutoff points is beyond me). In the sort-by-visit order, you can see the page title, but no hint of its URL, its visit count, etc. Why doesn't Microsoft just copy Netscape's history (like it copies everything else) and make a decent history option instead of this garbage, that they can't even fix properly in their hyped-up, premier IE6?

Anyway, that's my little rant... getting back on track, is there a plug-in or something like that that will give IE a Netscape-style history?

Answer:Is there any plugin, etc. to make IE's history like Netscape's history?

None that I have ever heard of. Just remember this is Microsoft your talking about, Bill thinks this is the best it gets.

I've used gpedit to allow manual control of updates and manually download and install updates when available, and I set "Notifiy to download" option. That gave me control similar to what I had with Win7. Or so I thought. But the Reliability Monitor shows the installation of many more updates than shown in Update History. Some of them are driver installations so don't represent actual Windows updates, but many of the are updates to Windows "apps" (Skype, Phone, Solitaire, Twitter, etc.). Are these updates considered to be different from "Windows updates"?

Now, I did check the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" option, but I assumed that meant it would give the same kind of download notification.

Is there any way to turn off this automatic installation of Windows apps updates? I use none of the Microsoft Windows apps.

Hi, there is a scheduled task which regularly checks for updates to universal apps. These are treated separately.
You could edit that task if you wished.

Most people want to clear their Firefox history.

My problem is the opposite. I have set the Firefox privacy options to clear the history after 9 days, but now it seems to be doing it every day or so. Too often! Even the URL bar thingy (where you type the URL) is cleared.

It started doing this a week ago, and ignoring my fiddling with the Privacy options.

I don't want the History to be wiped that often!

I do a good bit of researching online, and don't always remember where I've been, and the History is a very convenient tool. Yes I do know about bookmarks, but sometimes I check the history to refer to something. And the URL bar saves a bit of typing by completing the url for me.

Is it a virus that's wiping my History? I tried Googling, but all I got is "how to delete Firefox history", instead of "how to keep Firefox from deleting history".

Answer:Lost History: how to prevent history delete?

You might have checked this already but go to Tools > Options > Privacy tab
Make sure that it is not check next to: Always clear my private data when I close FireFox

When I click the 'history' box a 'Search history' box appears underneath but it seems to be unresponsive. How do I get the browsing history back, please? IE8, Vista, Laptop.

Answer:No browsing history in history column

Not sure about IE 8 but in IE 9, Tools, Internet Options, there is a bux that you tick or untick to delete browsing history on exit. Maybe there is a similar option on IE 8. Also running CCleaner (as I do)in default mode clears browsing history. Others with IE8 may well be more helpful.

My daughter has been sneaking around on the internet and I am curious as to where websites you have been are stored other than history and cookies?
I use Mozilla Firefox and WXP Pro.
Thanks

Answer:Where does history get stored besides cookies and history?

Hi

At first obviously you can check the cookies and history through Firefox itself.

The problem is, if you've set the browser to delete cache, cookies and history when you exit or at any time since your daughter visited, nothing will be left. Index.dat files are there (usually) but it's a little complicated and doesn't usually let you know with much accuracy who visited what and when, thus not too reliable for a certain time/day checkup.

I can only think if you download Super Winspy then you'll be able to check all the latest files accessed, URL history, cookies, search history, run history, open/save history, address bar history, documents opened on computer and the index.dat history which will also show any content viewed and visited (default search location is C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows user login>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat).

It'll cover pretty much everything computer related.

All this depends on how much has been deleted priorly, if so.

You need to test your new memory setup. While the combo of 800 memory and slower memory ispossible, not all combinations work correctly. Search web for memtest86 or memtest86+ You will need to make a bootable cd, or usb stick and boot from that.Let memtest run for a couple of passes at least, unlesserrors show up. Then you know the chips will not work together.

Its sort of a long post, so i'm going to just jump right in.

I recently upgraded my hard drive to a Western Digital Cavier SE 160 G. I had windows on another HD but thought it would go smoothly, so just disgarded it. The HD was a RMA so it didn't come with a boot disc like the previous one, but I lost the origanal. I went to western digitals site and downloaded the files that are apperently on the floppy and made a floppy. When I booted off the windows XP OEM disc everything went fine untill it ask if I had any raid drivers or anything to install, press 's', so I do. After I hit 's' is says that it cant find file txtsetup.oem. To make a long story short I went to MSI, motherboard, and downloaded some files that it apperently needed for drivers, but the problem is both manufactures files cant fit in the same floppy, problem. So I mix and match files on the floppy to satisfy setup so it can find all the files. So, when i'm at the same instal of man. drivers I press 's' and I choose the Windows XP controller and hit 'enter'. Then it goes back to the same 'to install drivers page' saying that windows will load the following ***, to continue hit enter, i do. Then it starts to load files and finally says 'starting windows' then windows displayes that it cant find any hard discs and setup cannot continue, press F3 to exit....WTF is happening here, and WTF can I do to get past this, shouldnt you partitio... I have this video due tommorow that i made in movie maker. i had 25 individual videos in the whole thing so movie maker kept crashing. so i did the movie in 3 parts. i tryed to save them and it says-

Movie maker cannot save the movie to the specific location. Verify That the original source files used in your movie are still available, that the saving location is still available, and that there is enough free space available, and then try again.

I haven't moved the files that i imported into movie maker. I have enough space and the location is available. so the only thing left that could be wrong is the source files. how can i get the movie maker to recognized the files.

I did edit the beginning and ends of some files so they blend together in movie maker. the files in movie maker are around 1 second shorter then the files that it is associated with in the folder.

Hi Guys,

This is quite a long story, So let me get straight to the point.

On my Dell Optiplex 360 Computer (Windows 7-Ultimate) I partitioned the hard drive to make space for another windows installation. I then installed Windows Vista Ultimate on it.

All of that went successfully but after a while it became useless for me and my computer.
I then uninstalled Window Vista and deleted the partition so i would have one partition on my hard drive (Windows 7).

So then every time i started up the PC it would load boot manager and it would ask me if i would like to boot to Windows Vista or Windows 7. I had deleted Windows Vista from my computer so i thought it shouldn't be there.

Then, i found this program that deletes the boot option (As in it deletes Windows Vista off from the boot manager). So then i went ahead and deleted Windows Vista from the boot list. After, i just tested to see it would work, So i restarted my computer and it loaded the boot manager again.

And the problem is that i only have Windows Vista as an option instead of Windows 7 !
I tried to do everything to fix this but it never worked, and when i try to boot to Windows Vista it says that the boot file is missing (Thats because i deleted Windows Vista!!).

So then i put my Window 7 Install Disk in the CD drive and the CD Drive was making a loud buzzing noise. I opened the case and it was literally broken.

So all i need to know is how i can get my option to boot to Windows 7 on my Boot Manager !!?

Hello adam, welcome to Seven Forums!

If Windows 7 is still there you need to make sure it's the Active partition and if it is do the 3 separate startup repairs discussed in this tutorial to recreate the "System" boot files (back) to Windows 7.

Start by having a look at Option Two #3, to see if it's active.

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum, but I have a very pressing issue with my windows 7 laptop. It is a HP DV7 Entertainment PC. It is a little more than three years old (i think).

Anyway. So here's the issue:

Recently, I was going through my Registry on my personal account. On my computer I have two different accounts. One for me, which has admin privileges, while the other is a standard account, that I let my family use.

When I was in my registry, I noticed that the username for my account under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM\SAM\Domains\Account\Users\Names was different from the one on my directory. The name shown when I log into Windows is my first name, however the directory name (the same one for the registry) is a nickname of mine.

So what I wanted to do was to make name under the registry (and hopefully the one under the directory the same), so I renamed the Key Name to the name shown when I log on.

Afterwards, I logged off my computer, and when I got to the Logon Screen, my account, the one with admin privileges, was not there. Only the second account, the standard.

I have longed on to the standard account, and tried to rename the registry key back to the original name, however, I don't have admin privileges, and I am unable to do so.

Normally, I would have just restored my registry to an earlier time, using a registry backup from a couple days ago, however, those we all saved under the documents of my admin account, which I can not access thro... Read more

The problem occurred when I made a standard user account and through that i redirected to the admin profile under c:/Users/xxxx and i right clicked the profile>properties>security> and i removed the standard account access to that admin folder and got some "Access denied error". After i logged off and login into the admin account, i got the error "settings.ini is being used by another process" from windows sidebar and windows sidebar was not working. After realizing that, i login with the standard account and wasn't having that problem........then i went to system restore and noticed "all my system restore points are gone". I got pissed and boot into safe mode and still the same thing, there was no system restore. I was able to get rid of the settings.ini problem by disabling UAC. So i was wondering what the hell happened and how can i get everything back to normal!! Please reply fast!!

last night I updated SUPERAntispyware and ran it. this morning, when I got up, I've found it's reporting a mountain of stuff; adware, malware, trojans, and more, but the thing is THE THINGS IT'S SHOWING DON'T EXIST! desktop shortcuts, files, bookmarks, all manner of stuff, but it's not there ! hijackthis! 1.99.1 finds nothing, reanimator finds nothing, AVG antispyware comes up clean, there's nothing showing in Autoruns that's not supposed to be there, finding nothing wrong in ProcessExplorer, and while some things turned up on spybot, none of them are in SAS' list. I'm also not finding any of it when looking by hand, and if it was there in the amounts SAS is reporting, it'd be visible. if I had as much stuff on my system as it's saying, it probably wouldn't even be running well enough to make this post.working with winXPSP2.sorry that the images are so whackin' huge, but it was either make a huge image or have an army of small ones to show the entire list of stuff it's reporting.post would have been up sooner, but spybot and company take a while to run, particularly on my older hardware.wait, how do I attach stuff again? maybe I'll have to pass the images along some other means, a PM or something... what a pain.

It is a trojan rather than a virus. The file gets stored on C:\ root as an .exe called Sys<something>.exe. Before deleting it, disable System Restore to clear that out and then delete that file, and then run a full scan of HD.

A bit of a strange question.
The problem... file history works well but if the C drive is restored to an earlier point (using disk imaging software), it is then out of step with the File History data located on an external drive or network.
Example.
File history has run for 20 days. The C drive is restored back via a disk image to day 15. File History resumes normally
but now the File History user interface shows dates only up to day 15 and then commences a new history starting at the current date. The File History from days 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20
although still present as readable files in the History location are not recognised by the File History user interface. What this means is that files from the dates the restore has 'skipped' must be browsed for manually and then copied
conventionally to their original location.
If there is a single 'data' file or .xml file that Windows uses then I wondered whether it would be possible to modify/replace/restore that file from the last time history ran (by saving that file before restoring via a disk image and transplanting
it back into the restored image). Hope that makes sense.
The question therefore is whether such a file exists and if so where ?

Answer:File History. Where is the Windows File History log location on the C drive ?

Hi?
"File History. Where is the Windows File History log location on the C drive ?"
Do you mean the event log for file history? We can usually find the log under event viewer\Windows Logs or Applications and Services Logs\Microsof\Windows\FileHistory-associated items.
According to your test, I manually create file history in my test machine and try to find the time stamp file associated to the file history file but in vain, I placed the edb and xml file under "FileHistory"\"MyPcname"\"Configuration"folderwith
another copy, but the change can not be recognized by the FileHistory user interface.
So I'm afraid that we need to manually copy the files to a destination.

OK, here's the story. I have an HP Dv7 laptop. I've had it about a year. I upgraded to Windows 8, but I have recently decided I want to revert back to Windows 7. That's when the problems started. Nothing wants to work properly. I can only go to select sites on IE, and even fewer site on Mozilla or Chrome. My LAN only works sporadically. The wireless shuts off whenever it wants. Any download or install that takes more than a couple of seconds will time out. Windows Update does not work at all. I've tried going to the Intel Driver Update page, but it causes IE to crash. Mozilla or Chrome won't even go to the site.

Right now I am only working with the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and the LAN driver installed. It's just completely buggy. This is my 4th attempt at reinstall. I actually had it fairly stable last night, but this morning it's buggy again.

I bought it used from someone and they had already deleted the restore partition. The funny thing is, I have done a clean install of this machine with Windows 7 PRIOR to installing Windows 8. It's like Windows 8 changed something in the machine. Heck, I've even flashed the BIOS to try that.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'm just being stupid and missing something.

I recently tried to uninstall some adware from my computer using YAC. It did, but it severly neutered my computer and now it's running super slowly and won't produce any sound. Is there a way to revert the changes done by this? I tried to system restore but that failed, and I was thinking of doing a clean install of windows 7.

Question: Revert to XP?

I've been extremely disappointed with my experience with Vista on the X61. I keep updating the system regularly in hopes that the problems will go away and am ready to give up. If I am willing to do a complete reinstall, is it possible to revert to XP? Can Lenovo provide me with a copy of XP I can use insstead of Vista? If not, can you provide the XP drivers for the X61?

Answer:Revert to XP?

If your issue with Vista is only constantly update, you could just turn that off. It doesn't make things any significant different really. For changing back to XP, you could find every driver for X61T in lenovo.com itself. However, what you are going to lose is "flick" and some better tablet features in Vista which XP doesn't have.I had tried once, and that was disappointed for me. Your feeling might differ though.

I have been chasing a problem with some of the cd's I found. Memorex CD-RW 700mb and Sony DVD+RW 4.7gb. When I try and use them my
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223L ATA Device [CD-ROM drive] reverts to PIO. The Memorex started to indicate 3 bad areas(regions I think) which in a document I found says Windows 7 Professional 64 bit reverts to PIO when a certain number of errors are found.
WHY DOES IT DO SUCH A STUPID ACTION? I was using ImgBurn to burn some music and then verify the disc. When it got to the 3 errors it started to take an hour to verify 5% of the disc. I had to cancel and Uninstall the drive and reboot to get DMA back.
I also tried to format a Memorex disc as USB and it failed, I don't know the error, but it also took many minutes to take the action. At the time I wasn't knowledgeable to see if DMA had been dropped in place of PIO. The BIOS is set for PIO 4 and the channels Ultra DMA Mode 5.
Is there a way to change Windows so it will NOT drop back to PIO on disc errors? Maybe raise the error count to 500 or whatever causes the change from DMA to PIO.
Thanks

Question: Revert PIO to DMA

Ok I found this today and it works like a charm i now we all had this Promblem we went to PIO mode not any more hassle and stuff like that.

Here is what causes the problem: For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.

Now to the helpfull part here what u need to do.

Check Your IDE Port Mode

First check what mode your secondary IDE port is currently working in. Go to Device Manager: right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, double-click on the secondary IDE channel, click on Extended Settings and check whether it is set to DMA when available. Directly underneath that setting is a grey field that shows the actual working mode of your IDE channel. You want the highest possible DMA or Ultra DMA mode there, and you definitely don't want PIO mode.

Normally you don't have to use the registry editor for this, because the normal settings are also available through the properties dialog for the IDE port, but if you want to look at it anyway, the parameter for the secondary IDE port can be found through regedit.exe at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port 1

It is named Scsi only for historic reasons. Scsi Port 0 is the primar... Read more

Question: Revert install.

Concerning Microsoft's Windows mobile updates any help would be welcome, since what I believe to have been the latest version 1607 I have been trying to get to grips with the settings menu which amongst other things has changed. I have poor eyesight but I was managing with the phone okay (MS Lumia 550) right up until the last update, the mechanics & workings of the phone are fine it's the settings menu that threw me. My question being is it possible to return the OS to a previous state meaning one that was easier for me to read other than a complete out of the box reset. Also if anyone in the know, could tell me how often updates are published and security concerns aside if there is a way avoid them, as far as I can tell it is only possible to re-schedule the updates and restarts. Thankyou. Paul R.

Answer:Revert install.

Hi and welcome to windows central forum.
There are no ways to revert or uninstall a certain update like as we do on windows 10 PC. The best you could do is if you own a device which was upgraded to windows 10 later, is roll back to 8.1 and stay there because if you are on any build of windows 10 the new updates will be forced down on your device.

My machine is an Acer Aspire T650. Due to booting problems and the dreaded BSOD - I had to reinstall Windows XP using the Acer Recovery Disk. I then decided to 'bite the bullet' and upgrade to Windows Vista using the disk supplied in the Acer Vista upgrade program. However because of various problems with Vista I decided to revert to XP - however when using the Acer Recovery Disk I now get an error message at the 'Restore Partition' screen as follows "Cannot format the object drive. Press OK to Return". The Acer help desk were not very forthcoming stating that I was now 'stuck with Vista' as the recovery files had been overwritten. Any ideas on how to get around this? Many thanks.

I have two directories: $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS

Can do the download thing but thought I might be able to reinstall 10 from one of these directories.

Thanks for any ideas that might come along.

Answer:7 to 10 no like - revert - remorse - 10 again?

Look for setup.exe in those directories. If there, try running. May work. If not use the MediaCreationTool to download and create and ISO or a flash drive. I prefer ISO as you can then simply right click on it, select Mount then run setup.exe to start the install and if there are problems you have the ISO to use gagain, otherwise just tell MCT to start the update as soon as the download ends.

If you use the iso to upgrade, then yes it'll be in the recovery settings. If you do a clean install then no, however If it has failed twice I would recommend doing a system image backup of your computer before you upgrade, cause if something goes wrong, you can go back to that image through a recovery disk

Question: Revert back to 98

Is it possible to revert back to an original installation of windows 98 after installing XP Pro over the top of it(without formatting the disk first)? I'm enquiring on behalf of a friend who installed XP expecting it to have retained all his previous programs/applications etc and would simply like to go back to Win 98. I told him that he should have backed up etc and should have hard copies of all data on disk. I think it was possible to unformat fat32 disks but I'm not sure about XP's ntfs and removing it. I can format, partition and install XP no problem, its just I've never tried to undo anything before.

Any advice/info would be much appreciated

I also like to change the placement of tabs on the taskbar. I have some shortcuts pinned on the taskbar. When I open the icon, the tab is located at the location of the icon. I hate that. It looks so ugly and inconvenient. Can I change it so the tab opens regularly to the rightmost place on the taskbar like every other program?

There is a small space between the top of the monitor and to the topmost icon. That is super annoying. I like to just move my mouse to the edge of the screen to open My Computer, but with this I have to move it slightly down. Very annoying. Right now I have align icon to grid off so I have move the icon a little bit up, but moving other icons is messy. How do I change that?

I have another keyboard, I press ctrl+space to switch between English and Chinese. In Windows 7 I can do that to switch from English to Chinese, but I can't do that to switch it back. I have to press shift+alt. How can I change it so it switches between keyboards with just ctrl+space?

How do I view control panel in folder view? Folder view is just so much convenient.

Sorry for the long list of questions! Thanks everyone who answers.

Answer:Revert some UI to Vista

Upgrade to Windows 10 2 weeks ago, fine except 2 progs I use won't work in WIndows 10, plus one is no longer supported.

Since I still have the Windows.old folder, and within the 4 week option I should be able to restore Windows 7. However within Settings/Recovery where I should be given the go back option I am not given the option to go back to win 7.

My only option now is to rebuild win 7 from scratch which is a pain.

I would just like to understand why in this instance why, as I am within the 4 week option and windows.old folder is still there, why I don't have the go back option?
As an aside I am hearing lots about incompatible software in win 10 which MS don't want you to know about. So everyone should take a system image before upgrading, lesson learnt.

Question: Revert Back To Xp?

So anyways, after my many, many trials...and failures with this OS, I've decided to revert back to XP. And yes, I know that voids my warranty, blah blah. I just have a couple of questions.Computer: HP Pavilion dv6327 cl Entertainment Notebook PC1. If I go back and install XP over Vista, will I still be able to use/get the drivers for the extra features on my laptop, say...HP Quickplay? Since I have special buttons on the keyboard just for these features (for DVD playback, volume control, etc.) and I would like to continue to use them, is there any way I could transfer this over to XP?2. Since I have internal wireless, will I have to go through the wireless wizard to pick my router's signal back up? It's unsecured, by the way, so no codes to input. (Yes, I know I should secure it.)3. Okay, if I can't have Quickplay, what about certain programs that came preinstalled, like Roxio? Would I just have to find a freeware version? And speaking of freeware, what would be the best freeware AV/firewall/AS, etc? Right now I just have ZoneAlarm firewall and AVG Anti-virus/anit-spyware.4. So I'm getting ready to reinstall, how do I tell what kind of HD I have? I looked under the battery and didn't see anything. Would looking in Device Manager work? I saw something called the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and most of the things under it were labeled IDE except the NVidia nForce SATA controller. Isn't that my graphics/video card? Does that mean I have to slipstream the XP disc or not?5. And one ... Read more

Answer:Revert Back To Xp?

Hello,Answers1 It will be very difficult to revert to XP as you can't install older versions of windows over newer versions. Using the extra features could prove difficult and it will be dependent on if XP can support the hardware being used.2 If you put XP on the system, you would most likely have to reformat the drive and start from square 1 in this case you will need to configure everything again3 If you are looking for freeware replacments, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.html has an extensive list.4 http://www.gtopala.com/ is a system auditing tool, it will be able to give you detailed information on all aspects of your hardware.5 flashing the BIOS is a very delicate operation, it is crucial that you follow the instructions to the letter, otherwise the BIOS way become damaged and could ruin the system. switching back to XP may work or it may not. before you continue you should find the exact cause of the BSOD.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but maybe not in this context.  I bought a dead laptop (Toshiba Satellite A75-S125) that looked to be in good condition, but the battery was dead and the AC power cable was missing.I had a cable that fit and was able to power if up.  Unfortunately, it's running at a 1.0 performance score.  It's also running a bootleg copy of Windows 7, while the stickers say it's a Windows XP laptop.  It doesn't really have any bells or whistles (in fact it took me a few days to figure out how to get any sound out of it--drivers needed replacing, I guess).I'm hoping someone can walk me through reverting this from the bootleg Windows 7 to an XP install.  I don't think this computer could handle anything beyond XP, although I am typing this in windows 7, so who knows?I'll be very happy with any help you can give me.  I just want it to be functional so I can give it to my brother who's only familiar with XP, and I can be rid of it (I know that's not realistic, but I can hope...)

Answer:Can I revert from Windows 7 to XP?

Hello tronk,

To be able to run XP on the computer you will need XP media, an appropriate Microsoft product key + the notebooks drivers downloaded and saved to a USB thumb drive.

Howdy,
I work at a school and there's this computer that has Win8 with IE10. Some school websites require IE8 to function properly. So, I've googled it and tried a few techniques (recently installed programs, compatibility mode, developer tools/run as IE)... but to no avail. The latter (developer tools F12 and run in IE8 mode) might work, but it doesn't save that setting, meaning I would have to set it every time. So that solution is completely worthless.

please help

I'm running Vista Ulitimate x64.
IE8 freezes and closes at least 5 times a day. I went through Add/Remove and unistalled the IE8 update and it did revert it back to IE7, however it doesn't work. The webpage is blank [white] and it tells me that "insert random URL cannot be opened at this time" when I try to go to a url in the address bar. I've set all the settings back to default and clear private data and still nothing. Before I installed IE8, I created a restore point and when I tried restoring it after the first try failed, it did the exact same thing forcing me to install IE8 once again.

I have firefox, however I don't want to switch browers, I just need suggestions on how to fix this problem. Thank you!

Hi all,

This is probably a simple thing. My boss' computer's Word asks if he wants to revert to a former version of "xyz.doc" every time he opens one - even one he has never seen before (e.g. I just opened one for him today that he got in an e-mail and it asked that).
Must be some setting in Word. What is it and how do I fix?

Thanks bunches in advance

Question: Revert to Vista.

So the situation is this computer got given to me by a friend with pre-installed Vista however it was slow and buggy due to overload on the System so my neighbour fixed it and installed Windows 7.

Is there anyway I can find the key it used to have and install Windows Vista with the .iso or will I have to purchase a whole new license.

And if I do find the key it was installed with will I still be able to use it even now?

Thanks Joe.

Answer:Revert to Vista.

Joe
Two ways to get the key. If it was preinstalled with Vista the key will be on the computer, itself. It is a 25 digit/alphabet number with spaces after each 5 numbers. If not there, you can the key number that you can obtain by downloading and using magical jellybean.
That key will be an OEM key, which may not work with anything but a DVD from the computer manufacturer.
You can also reinstall using the reinstall partition. What is the name and make of your computer?

I have the same issue.  Hours on hold to speak with MSFT Tech Support and no resolution.  Have reloaded drivers. Plus the below.ipconfig /flushdnsnbtstat -Rnbtstat -RRnetsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txtnetsh winsock resetexit Weirdly, I can access the internet using my mobile hotspot or a neighbors wifi (gracious enough to allow me to access) but NOT MY HOME NETWORK.  Only wireless option not wired available for this HP Desktop.  Windows 10 upgrade was forced and rolled back because I had no internet access.  A week later still no internet access.  What now HP???????

I have a Gigabyte board and an xp1800 processor, by default when I turn pc on it reports the chip as an 1150 mhz. I can then crank it up in the bios to 1550(ish) correct settings for an xp1800. But every time I reboot the pc it drops back down to 1150 mhz.

I cant see that it is anything wrong with my BIOS battery, as my windows clock never loses a second.

Any ideas?

BTW I am using a 250watt psu as oppose to 300, could this be the cause?

Not sure what happened...Operating Systems are really not my thing...

So a relative came over and the computer asked if they wanted to upgrade...he said yes...it now has Win 8 on it from win 7.

Apparently none of the files that were on it are not now, perhaps they're in a different partition or something...

Anyone have an idea of what might have happened and/or how to get Win 8 off and restore Win 7?

Thanks,

Do you mean the relative asked if you wanted to upgrade
OR do you mean a message appeared on the computer asking if you wanted to upgrade

Was the Windows 8 purchased OR did the relative bring with them a Windows 8 disc

I presume you know how this upgrade was done
Re

I presume you mean your personal user files by way of docs, pics and music
Depending on how the upgrade was done they are either GONE or they are in the Windows Old Folder
If you choose to keep nothing when you upgrade to Windows 8.1, your personal files won't automatically move with you, but you can still restore them after you've upgraded. Your files are saved to the Windows.old folder, where you can retrieve them after the upgrade. For more information, see Retrieving files from the Windows.old folder. (clickable)

As to going back to 7 that depends on - if you have the installation media or a recovery partition containing 7 on the computer AND indeed of course if you have a recovery image on an external drive to recover with your backup files to other than the bare Windows 7
