here my hijackthis log. Ive been trying so many different things and confusing the hell out of myself. All of my icons have changed to the generic icon image and i recieve the error message "windows cannot open this file" and am told to choose what i would like to open it with. I started in Command Prompt mode and copied regedit.exe to regedit.com and have access to my registry now.

Ive also tried to import certain .reg files that ive seen around that are said to help: xp_exe_fix.reg, xp_fileassoc, winxp_exe_fix.reg, all to no avail. A tried a couple system restores from various dates but it looks like w/e happened affected that too because it changed nothing. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Major Problem: 'Windows Cannot Open file' message! Hijackthis Inside

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently I have been attacked by massive amounts of spyware. I went through all the steps I could on the thread you are supposed to follow before posting. Attached are my newfiles.txt, runkeys.txt and hijackthis.txt. To be brief, my problems include: after pressing ctrl alt delete the window automatically closes, pop-ups, firefox automatically being told to close, and weird error messages. Thank you for all your help.

Hello, We have gone to the website
http://www.salonrenovationmaisonneuve.com/en/exposants
and download the file to open Inside of IE. Once the file is open, none of the links either e-mail or web site works. However, if we open the same file Inside of Google Chrome, the links work. So, we want to know if we are missing something in IE or a plugin.
The PDF file opens with no problem but the links are not enabled. The file works in an Apple Machine and Google Chrome. However, if we download the file physically inside of the computer and then open the file with Adobe Reader, the links all work! Any ideas
how to solve this issue? Thanks Miguel Moreno

Answer:UNABLE TO OPEN AN HYPERLINK INSIDE OF A WEB PDF FILE OPENED INSIDE OF IE 11

Internet Options>Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default" (there's a setting for scripting of ActiveX controls)
Start>Adobe Reader>Edit Preferences>there are setting for how embedded links are handled.
Chromium uses its own pdf reader plugin.Rob^_^

I am on a Sony Vaio laptop running Vista 32. The PC seemed to be working perfectly until I got the AV Security Suite that would show up on my toolbar (bottom right)....

Basically it says I have an AntiVirus Software alert and wants me to update. Everytime I surf the net it pop ups basically going over the same things. update or stay unprotected.

Anyways, I tried watching Step brothers which I have saved on my PC and the error "Security Warning - Application cannot be executed. The File vlc.exe is infected. Do you want you activate your antivirus software now.

Which brings me to this...

Everytime I download and try to run DDS and GMER, I bget the same warning. Instead of it being vlc.exe, it's dds.scr....

I also tried Control/Alt/Delete to stop the file so I could run my Malware Anti-malware program to get rid of it, but again...it's a no go....I can't even get to my Task manager.

Answer:AV Security Suite - Major Problem! cant open a singe file

Try downloading and running the tools in Safe Mode with Networking: Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode with Networking and press 'Enter'.
Login on your usual account.

Apologies if this is not the appropriate catagory but i had trouble finding a suitable one, here is my problem:

I was messing about with a file using winrar, (sorry i cant remember which file it was) i right clicked the file and clicked 'open with' i chose winRAR and it screwed up and decided every single program on my computer could only be opened by winRAR, (every icon was changed to the winRAR icon etc.) then in my frustration i deleted winrar hoping it would then sort itself out, it didnt. (i realise this was stupid now) i then restarted my pc to find things worse, the dock at the top of my screen could no longer start up along with numurous other programmes. somehow i managed to change it from winRAR to itunes, and then every time i opened a file it opened itunes instead, ideal if i wanted itunes and only itunes, but i dont -_- i then found i can access all the programs via finding them directly (my computer, etc.)so i managed to open the internet and type this for example, i searched google i found several problems just like mine, however none of the solutions worked. i then changed it to adobe reader, again every program opened adobe reader, and then to some internet explorer thing, i have no idea what has happened.

Basically i need to set every programme to its default startup file thing (if that makes any sense at all) if you need more information as to what ive done then feel free to ask, any help is welcome!

Please Help,
Russell.

Hello folks. I'm trying to fix my mother's computer and needless to say it's in bad shape. The memory is being hogged like crazy and the only form of virus scanner i have at my disposal atm is housecall. What's weird is the terms don't load for me to continue, but hijack this works. Here's the log from safe mode. I'm going to restart and run it normally and see if there are differences. ty in advance.

Anytime whenever I open any windows 8 app (Store, Change PC settings, ect.) it will be visible on the task bar but when I click on it it immediately just minimized itself and ive tried everything I can think, I cant even do a windows restore because it says that there is no program with that name. Im somewhat experienced with computers but this has me clueless.

Answer:Major Windows problem, no windows apps open.

Go to C:\ProgramFiles from here you need to unhide the hidden and system folders
You should see your windowsapps folder then. Make sure that folder has the administrator power it needs to read/write etc.
ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES need the following permissions to execute properly:

Read & execute, List folder contents and Read in the following locations
C:\WindowsC:\Program Files (x86)C:\Program FilesList folder and read data, Create Folders and Append Data
C:\Users\<userName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WERRead
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DriversHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWAREHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAMHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAREHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEMHKEY_USERS

You should then be able to do a restore.

This link also has some great insight on the issue I believe you may be having.

I get the message: Powers Shell has quit working and will be closed. Can anyone help me in resolving this issue. Reverse Caps Lock, Clicking Links Open New Windows - And Other major problems... Virus? Cant type numbers, on and off for over a year - really need help.

last night , I experienced a strange series of occurences on my computer (Windows XP/ PRO) that I thought had ended - .

when I was typing, that I was doing so in all caps - even though my Caps Lock was disabled.

When I enabled Caps Lock, it then started typing all lower case letters.

Other keyboard symptoms: the period and the comma were not available, only able to type > or < with or without the Shift key. Also, the Shift key didn't work with most keys for characters. There were also issues in selecting text in a field.

Another nuisance during this period is that when I clicked on a link, it would open up a new browser window, as opposed to the link opening in the same window.

Frustrated, I restarted the computer. I made sure no keys were stuck. When I rebooted, it appeared I was still experiencing these weird symptoms. I had double clicked on an icon on my desktop, it had selected more than one icon and opened the first one to the right.

I immediately ran Spybot/ AVG. found nothing - problem stops at random.
Good news, for now, is that a Spybot search found nothing major, and an Anti-Malware scan turned up empty.
I guess my question is, what should I do if I find myself typing the wrong characters again today?

And has anyone else experienced this problem? The more people know about this, the better! ... Read more

Hi all, Major Defense Kit has taken over my brother's computer. Working on a laptop with horrible WWAN signal, so my searching is limited. Sorry.

The PC is Win XP. I have printed the removal instructions and downloaded the requisite code onto both a USB stick and a CD. When I boot the machine, of course Major Defense Kit comes up. I let it go through its "scan" and then opt to "continue infected" of whatever it says. But then it just shows me a blank desktop (well, the background is there). It seems like the windows key (on the keyboard) is disabled, so I can't use WIN-E to bring up file explorer to run rkill. Of course, there's no icons or start button so I can't start it that way either.

How the heck can I open something in order to run/copy rkill to get going?

A couple things I've done:

I've killed MDK during its "scan". But I still can't do anything. Are there processes I can kill manually via task manager to help??

I've let MDK finish its "scan" and then clicked on "Install Heuristics module" to open up the browser window. However, I don't have any network connectivity on the infected machine, so I get a 501 in internet explorer. Even if it did have connectivity, the browser window it brings up has no url bar, so I couldn't redirect it somewhere to download rkill to the desktop anyway.

So how can I open up a file explorer window to access the USB stick or CD?

Answer:Major Defense Kit- Can't open file explorer to Get to RKill !!

Hey all, thought I'd follow up to tell my tale and hopefully others can learn by my mistakes.

First off, I learned a trick to run something when you can't open windows explorer. Probably a well-known trick, but was new to me. Since I could get in to task manager, go to the "applications" tab and select the "New Task" button on the bottom right. Then hit "Browse" and you can navigate to the program you want to run. Something else I learned along the way is that in these "browse" windows you can copy and paste files (and probably delete stuff too, but I didn't realize that until way too late. Woulda saved me a lot of time).

So I opened up task manger, selected the "major defense kit" app, right clicked on it, and selected "go to process". I was then able to ascertain the executable that was running. It was not one that was listed in removal instructions for MDK. It was "hotfix.exe".

So since I couldn't figure out how to delete the files with windows running, I booted Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD4WIN). I went into that file explorer and found it in the \Windows directory. I deleted it along with its companion .bat file (also different from the removal instructions) usdfgs.bat. Then I booted up windows and MDK did not start (yay!) but still I only had a desktop background with no icons or start menu (boo!).

So I spent the next coupld hours trying to find the listed regist... Read more

Welcome to Major Geeks!

A HijackThis log is of no use to us.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Make sure you uninstall ALL but one antivirus. You have Panda and AVG installed.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Bumping. To be more specific, the main problem that happens is after I open internet explorer, a new browser pops up sending me to a gtsearch, or another site. The internet is also much slower than usual, and when I first booted my computer today, I got an error box (which said something about Unable to...IE########...if it happens again I'll post it here...once I clicked cancel on it, my computer proceeded normally). Anyone have any idea what's wrong based on this information and the log from before?

eGreetings,

I am getting a persistent error in HP notebook running Windows 7 64 bit.

My problem is with Live Mail. I can view the message in the preview pane, but if I click to open (or right click and choose OPEN) I get an error message:
A problem has occurred while trying to open this message. A problem has occurred. Please try again.

Things I have tried:
1. Changing Antivirus from AVG Free to Avast Free.
2. Cleaning up with Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes.
3. Further Cleaning with CCleaner and IObit Unstaller.
4. MS Mr. Fixit.
5. System Restore.
6. Programs and Features - Uninstall - Choose REPAIR of Live Mail.
7. Chkdsk and Defrag.
8. Uninstalling and Reinstalling 3 times. With the 3rd time creating new settings and not installing backed up email messages.

I am stumped. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Could it be a problem with a Windows Update Patch?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time, help and expertise.
Kind Regards,
Jeri

Hello, recently I had ended the process of Windows Live Mail due to the program freezing up on my computer. Upon restarting the program, I could not reply to e-mails, and I also cannot write new e-mails. There may have been some e-mails that I cannot open at all, but I am not sure.

I am reluctant to delete all of my messages and to a complete 100% clean installation because I have thousands of e-mails from two accounts that need to be backed up.

I prefer an alternate solution if possible.

I have already did the uninstall from "Programs" and re-installed the software. I had deleted various registry keys that some sites had recommended to people with a similar issue.

I had posted on the microsoft forums, but have yet to receive a reply. I am hoping that somebody here can help advise me on this issue.

Have you tried repairing windows live essentials?

On random emails I get the above message. Have tried repairing Win Live Mail and updating it to no avail. Seems a common problem without any solid resolutions. Come on Microsoft, sort it!
Anyone found a working solution?

Answer:Windows Live Mail - 'A problem occurred while trying to open this message'.

Hi Jock1e,
Yes it is. I have logged back into the server and resent the emails and this time they open Ok. Did read somewhere that if you try to open the emails too quickly before WLM has opened and settled down, then that is when it is poss to get this problem. Not impressed with it as an Email client if it don't work proper!

Hi all,
I was hoping someone maybe able to come up with some ideas for me here of what to do next. (I am starting this in the Operating Systems forum, but it might be a Security issue?) We have a machine here in the office that has begun acting strangely.
Machine Specifications:
Gateway Pentium 4
CPU : 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4
Memory: 128 Mb
Network Card 3Com EtherLink PCI
Network Speed: 100 Mb/s
OS Version: Windows 2000
Service Pack : SP3
IE Version 6.0.2800.1400
Volume: C:\ 35.54 Gb NTFS
Free Space: 24.67 Gb NTFS
As of yesterday morning, the machine is hanging (screen freezing, no response to keyboard or mouse) for up to five minutes at a time. The machine then returns to normal. This is happening every 2, 5 or 7 minutes (frequently enough to be a complete pain).

I downloaded a stinger.exe from McAfee which ran successfully – nothing appeared on this. The Virus checker is up to date. All the machines, including this one are online 24/7 via an ADSL connection coming through a router – a third party company installed and maintain the ADSL so I have no details on the firewall, but apparently (?) we are locked down tight.

One other thing though – user says this problem began yesterday after an automatic Windows update.
Right click “My Computer” , System Properties – General indicates Service Pack 3.
But Control Panel – Add / Remove Programs indicates SP4 is installed? (or at least available for removal)

I have already run Hijack This but I am not sure if it indic... Read more

Hi,
This is my first post as a new member. I've been directed here by a friend saying you guys are really good at fixing problems.
The story begins with a new computer. I got a custom built AMD 3200+ system, with an eVGA motherboard and eVGA7800GT vid card, 2GB OCZ Value Ram, 200GB Maxtor HDD, and a floppy drive.

I had Windows XP installed on it, along with tons of games, and various other applications, and most importantly all my university work. Recently the OS got corrupted, according to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Instead of paying countless dollars for a Best Buy Geek to fix my comp, I decided I would buy a new HDD instead, install Windows XP, then back up all the data I needed.

The plan started off nicely. I got a 200GB Seagate SATA2 drive and was able to install XP with minimal fuss. I installed my vidcard drivers. Then I updated my Windows OS with their autoupdate program, including SP2. Following that, I was not able to boot normally. It would hang on the loading screen of XP.

I booted in safe mode, used the system restore function to before SP2, then started up normally. I reinstalled SP2, and now the same problem persists. I'm completely lost at what has happenned, seeing as how this should be a clean installation of XP. I find it odd that I can't install SP2 normally, as I had done earlier with my previous HDD. I have attached and I will list my Hijackthis log.

Thanks to everyone who read through all this and is trying to help.

So I think I got a trojan clicking a schoolwork-related attachment from my friend. When I clicked and ran the attachment, all these Symantec 'scanning message' message boxes started popping up on my computer, and the error messages I received indicated that my computer was trying to send virus-laden e-mails to other addresses.

Anyways, I hadn't heard of this forum yet, so I restarted multiple times and managed to run Microsoft AntiSpyware and Norton on my computer (my house has 2 connected ones, I'm using the uninfected one right now). The first time I ran AntiSpyware, a whole load of trojans and spyware popped up, so I deleted them. The second time I ran it, there was still a trojan left in a registry key. I discovered this website using this computer and tried to access IE in the infected computer in order to download the necessary programs, but I can't! When I open it, the page goes to 'about:blank', and when I try to change the address to any other webpage, I get the message that goes like 'Internet Explorer has encountered an error and has to close' and all the scanning message boxes start up again and slows down my computer very much. I also managed to access the Add/Remove Programs, and there was no new or suspicious program listed. Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:Major Problem - Cannot fix as IE won't open

Yes, I've tried opening IE both in normal mode and in safe mode w/networking, but I get the same result. It goes to about:blank and an error pops up when I try to go to another website. I've read the sticky, but I can't download any of the programs on my other infected computer because of the IE problem.

Hello, and thanks for this most helpful service.

I'm afraid I have a serious issue. I have an ESET antivirus program which detects an "a.bat" variation of the Zapchast trojan. I emptied the system restore but I think it still reports it.

But I imagine my problem is much bigger. The internet stops working after 8 or 9 hours of computer runtime and I can't repair the connection because the ARP Cache can't be emptied. I can manually empty with a CMD command "netsh interface ip delete arpcache" but it still doesn't fix the internet and I need to restart to get it to function. That's my major issues so far - continuous a.bat detection of the zapchast trojan and the internet dies after x hours of uptime for windows.

I'm afraid I've tried fixing the computer in multiple ways, did so before reading the "do NOT try to fix anything" on this website. I hope I can still receive help.

Among things I've tried:

Multiple ESET Scans
SUPERAntiSpyware Scan
Spybot - &D
Clearing the System Restore

Below is the HijackThis log. I hope someone can assist.

Hi. I hope that you can help me yet again!
My laptop is a Asus x52f running windows 7. All was going well, until this week when I noticed that the date and time kept changing.
I changed the Internet sycronized time to time.nist.gov which has seemed to have resolved the issue but to be on the safe side, I did a full system scan using avast.
This threw up a couple of Trojans. I got rid of these and then, after restarting my computer, as Avast required it (and it did lots of stuff before getting back to my windows screen), I ran Superantispyware. This just threw up some cookies that weren't dangerous but best go get rid of. So I did. Restarted again and now I cannot open any programs whatsoever.
Next I tried a system restore but this failed and it suggested that I run a recovery. I'm really, really reluctant to do this and would welcome any other suggestions.
Really, really appreciate any help or support!!

Answer:Think I may have a major problem. I can't open any programs

Avast has thrown up a few false positives yesterday.
Best bet is to go to Command prompt and type in sfc /scannow and it should fix a few of the files that were deleted.
Try rebooting to see if you need any further help.if so go into safe mode and run system restore to a time before you ran Avast.
Reboot and everything should be back to normal.

This is a weird, weird problem. Every time I try to run a program from a shortcut on my desktop, I get a dialogue box asking me what I want to open the .exe with. If I right-click and choose run as administrator, this doesn't happen.

If I try and run a program from the Start Menu, this also happens, as does running the program from it's folder (not from a shortcut).

If I try and run system processes such as System Restore or netplwiz.exe, I get told "Application not found" unless I run as administrator. Normally I am good at fixing Windows errors, but I have never seen this before. I have no restore points.

Answer:*Major problem* - Asks me what I want to open an .exe with!

I read this post after your first one. I think the solution may be the same but I have not read of the exact symptoms you describe, before.

Hi, newbie here. I resubscribed to Norton anti virus a few days ago, and ever since I cannot open a window within a window, or link to another window within a site. I am very much a newbie so be kind. The pop up blocker is off, but when trying to access my email or any other sites when I click on the link I get a new screen that is blank and on the bottom left corner of the original window I was in is an error message. Any help you can give will be appreciated. Paula

Hi guys. I'm having problems with a possible virus/malware on my computer. Everytime I try to open up windows defender I get the blue screen of death and whenever my pc restarts itself, windows defender closes due to an unexpected error.

I tried downloading other anti virus programs like spybot and avira but spybot couldn't open and crashed and avira gave me blue screen.

I'm currently trying ESET's online scanner since thats the only thing thats working for me. Oh and heres the hijackthis log. What should I remove?

Ok, if I have an app and switch to another app, when I want to switch back to the app that is minimized by going to the top left corner of the screen to maximize the app, it does maximize, but as soon as I move my mouse from the top left hand corner where I opened the minimized app, it immediately mminimizes the app I wanted to use, and then brings back full screen the app I just minimized.

I am probably not explaining it clearly, if you have questions on my problem that I did a poor job of explaining, please let me know.

Hello Motley,

Are you using a touchpad when this happens? If so, then it may be the edge swipe feature selecting it by mistake. You could disable touchpad edge swipes to see if that may help.

Hey everyone!

I recently got a new computer, an Asus Zenbook UX302lg, and let's just say it's been a whirl of problems. I've solved most of the original issues, but one's now popped up and it's been bugging me for a few hours!

My windows store DOES open without hiccup. However, once it's inside the screen, everything I click on does not respond - I try to update to 8.1 by clicking on the box, and the box gets smaller indicating that I've clicked on it, but nothing happens. Similarly, this is the case for EVERY single app - none of them respond to my clicks.

At the start, I thought perhaps it was my anti-virus software blocking it, so I disabled it (it was AVG 2014) but that didn't work. I uninstalled it (getting desperate) and didn't work.

I searched online for possible solutions - I downloaded the Windows app troubleshooter - didn't work, I reset the store cache - didn't work.

It may have something to do with the fact that when I first opened windows store, while everything DID WORK, updates on apps wouldn't work and it would be stuck on pending - I searched online but couldn't resolve it, until bam I got a notification saying that all my updates had been installed a few hours later - with me doing nothing. I thought I got pretty lucky. My computer's been through a couple of mandatory updates since then, and now today after I tried to update to 8.1 (the first time it's showed up in the store as well) it no longer works.

Any advice for a fix would be very much appreciat... Read more

This is wierd. I have two partitions, W7 64, and XP 32.

I have a folder, on my G drive, (I have several drives) and in that folder I have ten .mkv video files. In W7, when I try to either delete or rename two of those files, I can not - I get a message saying that the action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer. Not sure what that means exactly. and I get this as soon as I boot into Windows. The app that is associated with the mkv files is VLC player - that DOES NOT boot with W7. Changing the association to something else does not help. I am able to delete/rename the other 8 files in that folder - just not those 2. Thing is, I can delete/rename those 2 files when i am booted into my XP part - so there is something going on with my W7 part. A virus scan revealed nothing.

Any ideas here?

Thanks!

Answer:Getting a message saying that a file is open, when it's not

Hi,

This behavior can be quite common when it comes to ANY video file. I have several issues with the Nokia M Platform suddenly accessing my video files meaning I can't do anything with them other than play/copy them. I have to normally kill the process in Task Manager.

The biggest issue is Explorer trying to render what little information it can from the video file, and as MKV isn't supported it has a hard time processing any info for it (Bitrate, Thumbnails etc.).

Try downloading the latest codec pack from Shark007 and see if that solves the problem.

So within the last couple of weeks I've noticed my machine has had crazy slow downs. Sometimes I'll be watching a vid in YouTube for example, and chatting on Trill, and when i pull up a chat window firefox and the video might crash. Other things take longer too, like sometimes when i try to watch something with VLC it will take almost a minute before it actually pops up and starts running. Granted, I'm overdue for a defrag, but i'm suspicious if thats not all there is going on.

I've run full scans with AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware, only to find nothing. I have AVG running constantly and i have Sunbelt firewall, and I'm somewhat curious if the two programs aren't set up to work right together. I haven't done too much configuring with either, so they may be interfering with each other.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Ok, so here is the deal: About 2 weeks ago, I was at a LAN party with my clan, we went there for the tournament, and we were told that there was a high securitylevel when it came to virus spreading etc. everyone in other words, had to install anti-viruses etc before they were permitted to go online.

however this seems to not have been the case. Because within 10 minutes after logging on to the internet, I find myself with a bunch of suspecting and unfamiliar processes and programs.

The processes that I noticed were in particular the following:

spoolsv.exe
system.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
and the last one went something like this: "msq30". similar to that.

the last one(msq30), AVG anti-virus got a hold of and killed it seems, but the above is still here, making my every day a living ****.

PrinceRameses,

I don't think you can disable the message, I think you actually have to find out what's causing the problem which is normally firefox addons.

Try FF in safe mode: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

If you don't get that "Confirm" message when surfing, you know it's an extension you have installed.

When I log off from my user account on Win XPPro, I get some kind of quick error message which I am unable to read.

I did recently remove McAfee Security Center and I notice in the log file there are a couple of lines referencing McAfee. I'm not sure if those hurt anything or not.

Can you please review my file and see if you see anything suspicious? I have run and updated Spybot and Adaware and both are clean.

Thanks!

"The action cant be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program"
i check and close all program, i dont see it in the task-manager
(if i reset the computer, and try again it will delete it)
another problem in Windows-8, when i copy, or delete folder - i cant see the action until i press F5 for refresh
how i can fix those problems ?
thanks,

Answer:got message 'file is open in another program'

For your first problem, look no further than Unlocker. Goodle it, download and install, it will release any system locks on the file so that you can move or delete it.

As for deleted folders still being visible until F5... I've not heard of that happening before, no suggestions sorry.

I've downloaded couple of files off the internet & getting this error messages.

Wonder if anyone around can help me know more about this particular error (as seen in the attachment) & the possible solution to sort it out.

It's a couple of programs (from the icons I can see) where one icon is of "parrot" (285 KB) & the other one is of "normal software program" (1.90 MB) icon.

Both programs itself contain some "wav" files, as far as I know.

Answer:File Open Error Message ???

right-click the file, click properties, click the compatibility tab, click "run this program in compatibilty mode for:" then select Windows 95 out of the drop down menu.

This should do it for you. I know that XP can do compat mode, but Im not sure if 2000 will...

Hi there
this usually happens because a system or background service is running -- usually the culprit is something like Adobe updater or any of those little programs that might be running when you look at the tray on the right hand bottom of your screen --where the arrow is -- not quite to the complete right corner or you'll get the charms bar.

Go into control panel and look at SERVICES -- disable or stop the ones that are using your program. (This is different from the APPLICATIONS as the problem sounds like it's a background service which is using the file(s) you want to delete not an APPLICATION.

You'll need also to look at the task manager to see whats actually running - both applications and services.

If you can't figure it out take these 3 screenshots and maybe it should be clear what to stop.

1) Running services
2) running applications
3) name of program or file you want to delete.

Cheers
jimbo

Hello everyone. This site seems to be very helpful so hopefully you can help me fix a problem on my laptop.

Whenever I try to open a program I'm given the "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" message. I read somewhere that I can fix this issue through running cmd but when I try that I'm told the application (C:\\Windows\system32\cmd.exe) is not found.

Any idea on what I can do? Thanks.

edit: sorry about the typo in the title.

Answer:nt t"Choose the program you wao use to open this file" Windows 7 problem

Hi Mmage

The issues your having can be resolved with the following.
This commonly happens after a fraudulent security tool is removed from a computer.
You will have to apply the following to the Registry, just download the file depending on your operating system (The Vista one will work on Windows 7) and then double click it to merge it to the registry, this should resolve the issue.

Okay, someone hacked into my Win32 FTP server. This is whats happening:

They made directories not even visable in Firefox (ftp://andy.tcdextreme.com). These are full of their files filling up my HDD. Now Windows tells me I dont have permission to access these folders/files on my server. I booted into Knoppix Linux hoping to delete the files that way, It let me read the files (I seen they uploaded Kill Nill etc..) but when I try and delete I dont even have permission that way... even though in Windows I set EVERYONE to FULL permissions. And yes im logging in using administrator etc.

Answer:Major File Permissions Problem

Check the ownership of the files. If you have to "Take Ownership" of them and then reset the permissions and delete those files from your drive.

Unfortunately, worste case scenario, you might have to reformat your drive and begin from scratch.

Also make sure you PC's Operating System is up to date with the security patches as well as any FTP software that you might be using.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

Without using any Nero or file burning software, can Windows XP itself supports simple file copying to disc. Not that I know of, but i have a user who can do these.

1. select a file, right click and press SEND TO the burner
2. simply copy and paste the file to the burner
3. reopen a file on a disc, edit it, and then can save it back onto the disc.

Strange, anyone welcome to comment. Thanks.

PROBLEM:

Error message when opening or downloading mpg file

all of a sudden I am getting an error message when ever I try to open and mpg. The message reads:

There is no disk in drive. Please insert a disk into drive.

once this error message is open I can't close it. I have thru trial and error discovered clicking on the CANCEL or CONTINUE option button from 8 to 15 times will open the mpg in Media Player. The RETRY and RED X do nothing.

Hi all.

I have a strange issue (or so it seems to me that i am a newbie) . I try to use a small utility which reads massively *.txt files and if they are saved as ANSI it saves them as Unicode.

The problem is that when i run it (run as administrator) i get an error message saying "Cannot open file. Access is denied message"

I am not lazy (or so i think) and i have read the tutorials in here regarding take ownership and the problem still persists.I really don't know what to do.

Please tell me your suggestions?

Thank you for your time reading this.

Regards,
theobserver.

Answer:Cannot open file Access is denied message

Hello theobserver,

Are you able to open the .txt files normally?

When you took ownership, did you also set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control" of the file/folder as well?

I have been using Excel (via MS Office Professional Edition 2003) for several years now, and in particular I keep a spreadsheet on which I list about seventy names and addresses of people that I send Christmas cards to. Just recently, when I wanted to add a couple of names/addresses to that list, out of the blue I got the following message "Office validation detected a problem while trying to open this file. Opening it may be dangerous" ! How my list of friends' Christmas card details can be dangerous I don't know, but any help to rid myself of this problem would be much appreciated.

I am in desperate need of assistance and guidance. I have good reason to believe I have a virus or that I have been hacked in some way.

Some Symptoms:
1. WiFi is set to off, but comes on automatically
2. Once WiFi comes on, it brings up the dialog box to open a file
3. My open brower (Firefox) also closes automatically
4. In IE I get a dialog box that pops up asking me to enter a term to search for a file.

I have run virus scans several times to no avail. I have Microsoft Security Essentials.

Most of the time when something is named "loader.exe" it is a preloaded way of cracking an applications serial number or copy protection. Is that the case here???

SPDT.SYS used by daemon tools/alcohol and KeyMagic. Both.

Your computer was up for 2 plus days so it isnt happening frequently, and removing those two items may fix it.
Ken J

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads

I have acrobat reader 7.0.5 on two comuters. On one computer, I can open a pdf file right from the email. My email is Outlook XP.

But on the second computer, I click on the attachment ans get a message "Application Not Found. So, then, I need to save the pdf file to somewhere convenient and then go in and open the save file.

I compared the configurations in acrobat reader as best as I could, and found the two installations to be indentical. I tried to find something in Ooutlook, but that was fruitless.

I am sure that this is very simple and that I am just not seeing it.

Any help will be appreciated.

. . .I click on the attachment ans get a message "Application Not Found." . . . Click to expand...

What that message is telling you is that Adobe Reader is either not on that computer, or is corrupted (in my experience, some versions corrupt quite easily). The probably remedy is to uninstall Adobe Reader (if it is present) and download the latest version.

Startup problem: When I start up my desktop computer, it will usually just load up to the point of my desktop background, no icons or start bar will appear and it will just sit at the desktop background. I then I have to do a hard restart and try booting up again. Once in a while it will load up like normal, with the icons and start bar appearing, but this is very rare (about 1 out of 10 boots on average.) Also I can't seem to enter Safe Mode when I boot up.

Internet Problem: When I start up my internet (through my mobile broadband USB stick) it will only work for a few minutes and then the internet will lose connectivity and I will get a problem saying...

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Has Encountered A Problem"

After this I can no longer connect to the internet. I have to restart the computer again if I want to connect to the internet, and I have to endure the startup problem (as described above.)

I have tried downloading a fix from Microsoft (KB894391) but it doesn't work. Hope someone can help me fix these problems. These problems seemed to happen after I updated to Service Pack 2 and also tried to update my graphics card drivers.

Hi, every time we start up the computor we get the messsage unable to open the file D:\ CD Manifest.dat. we have to click cancel to get past it and carry on but we cannot fix the problem can you help???

Answer:start up error message unable to open the file D:\CD manifest.dat

Something is trying to run a program using pointing to a CD file.

This is usually found in the Registry's RunOnce entries.

Try this:

FIRST: Right-click My Computer, select Manage, expand [+] Event Viewer, look at each log for an error entry and double-click it to see details, use info to fix.
OR: Open Regedit ([Start] menu, Run, type regedit)...
...use File, Export option, to backup your Registry...
...use Edit menu, Find, and enter RunOnce in the search field, [OK]....
...look for an entry in every RunOnce found (you may have to expand [+] the entry) and find the specific entry line that calls the file or a program that may be looking for the file and click it to select....
...delete [Del] just the erroneous entry...
...you should use [F3] to continue search until end, to make sure the entry is not anywhere else.

I've got two Win10-64 boxes running 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709 and the latest KB4056892 2018-01 cumulative update for windows 10 version 1709 x64-based systems.

With one box, I can right click on the latest firefox 64 bit exe installer and can 'scan with windows defender' and it will scan 598 files. On the other, the scan of the same file shows '1 files scanned'?

I just can't figure this out? How can I resolve this? It makes me question whether Windows defender is working at all?

HP Pavillion All in One PC running Windows 10. Started with an update. Then bubbles, erractic touch screen, turned that off computer still functioned. Then within the month the screen started falling asleep and would have to restart computer to wake it up. Mouse and keyboard grew a mind of their own. Done hard start on computer, work for a minute, sometimes seconds before it would fall asleep or shutdown, not sure which. I started a full recovery but shortly after starting the screen went blank and the power button shut off. I waited 24 hrs before restarting. It will load up but when I click on anything, nothing happens, I know the mouse is working it will highlight an item but when clicked nothing. So I restarted the computer using F11 to do another recovery. It started the process and got over half done, then gave the error message "can't open file : X :\sources\recovery\Tools\HP\Rita-tool\. Now I have downloaded the sp74124 to disk. The question I have is how do I install from a disk onto a computer that I can not operated. Visually everything is there. I can even see that the internet is connected. But when I click on anything a little circle starts spinning and eventually, less that 20 minutes it shuts down. I can restart while pushing F11 and get the command prompt screen. Can I install from there? If so how?ANy help would be appreciated.

Hello Gyzerflux

I think you might have an infection there.

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.
(Please change the new Thread Subscription to ?Instant Email Notification? so that you receive an email as soon as a reply is posted,)

However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Answer:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

www.systemlookup.com
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/filedb/

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

Analysis logs are only to be posted in this section of the forum, not General Security. I've moved it here.

I see no sign of infection in those logs. If you think the machine is infected...

created it. Is their a way to add file extensions to Windows little bag of tricks?

Case in point: McAfees Stinger makes a report .opt - Windows states that in order for
Windows to open this file Windows needs to know what program made it. Isn't there
someplace in the bowels of XP that I can add that .opt and no longer have to go through
the

If I change the .opt to .txt Windows can open it in Notepad but it has some strange chicken
scratch oh I know the chicken scratch has a name, I just don't know what it is at the moment
and that is not the point here anyway.

This one is terribly simple I know. By choosing the second option I'm able to pick from several programs.........but........

there are files that I download from the internet that once "filed away" seem to come apart at the seams and all I have
are the peices without the gluethreadscrewnail that held them together and made them so darn interesting in the first place.

I HAVE PIRATED BUT ACTIVATED VERSION OF WINDOWS 7! So recently I downloaded bioshock 2 from a less than legal site... I am not sure if this is the problem but it all started then. I ran the crack and nothing happened. It just kept doing that blue green circular "doing something" cursor. Then it wouldnt open up any windows or programs. There was no message displayed, it just didn't open anything. I restarted my computer and it seemed to work fine for about 5 minutes. I started to play modern warfare 2. When i opened it, it was very choppy, and it is not normal for it to be like this and it would not connect to IWNet. I quit, and the same thing happened, it would not open any windows or programs. I restarted again and scanned with AVG, which found no viruses. Then I scanned with Trend Micro Housecall and still no viruses. I uninstalled bioshock 2 and still nothing. The time between working and freezing is different every time and it doesn't seem to have any pattern. So here is my HijackThis Log:

I am not exactly sure what it all means but I could not find anything that looked suspicious or bad. Any help is appreciated.

Im not sure where to begin, but I know I'm pretty much screwed here. This is by far out of my league as far as my computing knowledge and experience. I hope someone can help:

I have Vista Ultimate x64 on a Quad Core w/ 4gig of ram, SLi, 2 8600 GTS, with creative X-FI Xtreme sound card, p5n32-e ASUS motherboard with nVidia 680i chipset. Amazing machine that has been flawless, with the exception of Vista and its problems with 3rd party drivers. software. etc...so for 9 months i've gone without any

The problem occured when I was playing The Witcher...on a occasion(once a month or more) my sound card drivers fail or give out. So I must restart the drivers by doing a reboot. We'll this reboot has put my OS and HDD in a state of vegitation. Yes my OS is in coma and I need help.

The OS had been booting up strangely the past couple of weeks. Sometimes I had to reboot twice to get Vista to load. The problem somehow surpassed me since I usually just keep the computer on a week at a time or longer. Whenever an update is installed and a reboot is necessary are the only time the computer gets rebooted or turned off. I never got around to doing a system restore point when Vista was loading.

We'll I went into BIOS, setup my CD ROM driver to boot b4 my single 320gig partition. My Vista DVD-ROM loads up but I cant do any sort of repair, restore, or installation. The start up repair either sits at searching for problems or repairing for hours at a time without any sign or in... Read more

Answer:Major Vista problem(corupted file, recovery options stall)

Well since you can't get the OS to even install, that rules out any software related issues. Certianly something hardware wise.

1) Hard drive - more then likely the culprut

2) mobo - not as likely, but also possible

Even longer shot by the issue you discribed is bad ram, but i dont think thats teh case here.

Hop on google and search for "drive fitness test" and also "memtest 86"

you'll need to download and burn them with a program such as nero as they will be in a ISO file format. You can then use them to test your hardware. Good luck.

Since build 10166 I can not open Outlook 2010 on my PC. I am getting the message that I do not have permission to open the folders. I can get it to open if I open as admin but that has limited functionality.
Any ideas? I have checked the folders properties and there is nothing in there that has changed.

Answer:Build 10166 Outlook won't open message - 'file access is denied - you do not have permission

I found this elsewhere
- Got to your hard drive and right-click the folder that's causing all the trouble.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Security tab
- Then click Advanced
- You'll see a window with some usernames. Now click Owner in the tabs above.
- Click Edit, then select the username you wish to be able to open the folder and be sure to check the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" then hit Apply.
A pop up will come up that says something like 'You have replaced the ownership for the selected folders' or something in that manner. It worked for me and hopefully this post is still useful to some people
I changed access to users to full control and now it opens fine.
