PC-cillin Users...or potential users...

Question: PC-cillin Users...or potential users...

Anyone who uses/has-used PC-cillin ... well more to the point, does anyone like this program?

I bought it for "fun", before trying it (smart, I know!)...but it is extremely annoying in so many ways.

It warns you about everything. Granted, that sounds good, but--just browsing the net, it will find dozens of "spyware/ad sites" (and it has always been right thus far), but they are iframes, popups etc. They are everywhere--and a warning for each one!

"Venus spy-trap" they call it. I thought that was funny in itself But really, the one thing on there that is just a PITA: I added two domains to my hosts file, and there is no way to "allow" the changes permanently--upon reopening the browser, their warnings come back. Of course, you could disable the monitoring of the file, but then what is the purpose!

Lastly (thus far), I get meeting notices via Outlook / Lotus Notes. They say these emails are *viruses* because they're in an unusual format! Better yet: the fix...well, you should check it out!

You edit the registry to fix something so stupid...

Ok, end of rant (sorry), but I really am curious--those of you who use this, why?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To those who are considering trying out Firefox, here is a warning. I would suggest that you only try it if you intend sticking with it. I tried it out and sadly missed the IE spellchecker which I had installed very easily. After several completely abortive attempts to install one to Firefox, the instructions on their website are very complicated, I uninstalled the program. I could NOT believe how much rubbish was left behind, and to make matters worse, I could no longer use hyperlinks in Outlook express. I opened Windows Explorer and deleted several folders referring to Firefox and Mozilla, then ran a search and found at least a dozen more, and deleted these. I then opened the registry and deleted three more references, then ran Crap Cleaner and RegScrub XP. I still could not open hyperlinks in OE. After searching Google, it appears that this is a common problem. Various solutions were offered, none of which worked for me, until I found the following. This worked in my case.First: Load Internet Explorer; click: Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs Tab. Next, click Reset Web Settings, and Make sure to also uncheck "reset my home page" check box. Finally, go to Advanced tab and click Restore Defaults.I would suggest that you think very carefully before trying out this browser.

Answer:Warning to potential Firefox users

Strange, I've had no problems at all with it and have found it much better and faster than IE.

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. If your reading this, hope it helps you out buddy.

I'd also like to add the game only works when I have Safari open. Absolutely no idea why, but this seems to be a requirement.

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

hi guys,

really need some help on this one cause i cant seem to get how something that sounds so simple is so hard to do.

i got a client with a workstation that has a local user account on it.
they also have a domain which he has another account on there.

so i have local account joe1 and domain account joe2. now i need to get joe 1 to combind and merge outlook and my docs with joe2. and then get joe2 to stay on the server so that it remains a account that can be accesses on any computer on the domain network. with this in mind the user profile needs to be saved on the server and the profile can be copied to the computer that his sitting at when he loggs on.

anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

please can anyone help me one this

Answer:migrating local users on xp to domain users on a windows 2003 server.

prob best n easiest way to do it would be to FAST the local profile to the server then log in with the domain profile and FAST it back

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

This is normal. All users folder points to c:\programdata folder. These are called symbolic links.

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All Users\Desktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All Users\Desktop work ok, just not any new ones!

The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

Answer:Website printing??? (backgrounds causing problems with PC users but not Mac users)

I only have one suggestion. Do they have this unchecked?
Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Code:

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Answer:How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Windows does not have a folder All users. It is a link to C:\ProgramData folder, in other words when you run command DIR "C:\Users\All Users", it lists the content of folder C:\ProgramData.

I posted this message in the W95/98/ME fourm, but this seems like the more appropriate place for the question:

I work for a company that has a small network consisting of one NT 4.0 Server box and around 40-60 client computers, mostly running W95 with a few running W98/2000/ME. Anyway, two managers here have W98 machines, and periodically after they have logged into the network and used different mapped network drives all of a sudden they can't access any mapped drives and they appear to be disconnected from the network (well, they are, as they can't do anything network related). The network is your basic ethernet using simple UTP cabling and hubs. The cabling appears to be plugged in properly, especially since they can log in and be connected to the network for a period of time. Rebooting solves the problem, but that isn't acceptable to my managers, so I have to figure out a way to get it so they don't get kicked off (besides just giving them W95). I have done a lot of research by myself on this, but I can't find any answers....if anyone has any ideas I'll be grateful, and will consider naming one of my future children after you. If you need more info, I'll be checking this board tomorrow throughout work, and will be more than happy to provide you with any other info you need. Thanks

For various reasons I wanted to have them under my name i.e., users\FP\. So I added another admin user FP with which I login. However, no users\FP\ folder was created and the information is still stored in users\USER\.

Any idea why and how I could get the system to create the FP users folder and store the information there?

Is there a way to create user files or folders that are not invisible to other users. Invisible to mean the other user see absolutely nothing to do with another user. Users in this case to mean Windows 10 "Standard User" Please note that if solution cannot be accomplished with Home edition, please note that in your reply --Thanks

Here is an example. There are 2 user accounts on my computer, not including mine. The computer has a 2nd drive that I use for all my personal data. When I created a Standard User, that user apparently can see all my folders and files. They cannot open them but they can see the titles. I want to create an environment where each user only can see and manipulate those files and folders they create/own. Other than that the data drive would empty.

If this is something you know about or dealt with I would very much like to hear your thoughts and a concrete and simple way to accomplish this.

Again, thanks
Jerry

Using win10 - 64bit
Logged into cmd prompt as admin.
Cannot see C:\users\all users with the following cmd's

Folder does not show in normal File Explorer window
Run TREE cmd and the All Users folder does not show.
Run DIR cmd for C:\users and All Users does not show
Run ATTRIB -s -h C:\users and still do not see All User folder appearing. Restart after running ATTRIB cmd, but does not trigger reload of folder.

BUT, when I
Run DIR cmd for "C:\users\all users" the folder and files show
Run ROBOCOPY and the All Users folder and its files transfer.

Somehow this folder has become hidden and I am unable to unhide or see it.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Unable to see folder C:\users\all users

Windows does not have a folder All users. It is a link to C:\ProgramData folder, in other words when you run command DIR "C:\Users\All Users", it lists the content of folder C:\ProgramData.

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

Answer:Show processes from all users, with no other users

All users includes not only other users, if any but the System as well.

Under Windows 2000, when I reformat the computer, I add administrator user as a network user in the install process. Then, I go in and add local users to the computer. Later on when I want to add network users, it won't let me, the computer just hangs. Any ideas?

Answer:Can't add network users after add local users

Not much information to go on here, but are you signed on as a network admin when you are trying to add the network users?

When you say you add the administrator user as a network user, what are you referring to? Are you adding the Network Administrator account to the local PC?

I have a buncha users that I have as power users, since the software we use will not work as a normal user... problem is, they can install stuff on the local machine that way. How can I have ONE program run as a poweruser/admin/whatever, but have the rest of the system as a restricted user??

Thanks for your time,
QJ

Answer:Want to block users from being power users...

What's up Qwerty.

In XP, you can choose to run a program as a different user. Right-click the shortcut, select Advanced, then check "Run with different credentials". When you execute the program, it will prompt which user to run it as. You may have to read up on how to make it not prompt for a password each time.

MSDN has an in-depth article on the subject.

Hello,
I come across an issue. I have some powershell scripts in a folder. My demand is that i'd like to share it with remote domain users. But i don't want them to check the content inside.
So, when i set the NTFS permission for the users,  I removed the read permission only retained 'Traverse folder/execute file" permission
and "list folder/read data" permission. however, the remote users could access the folder remotely but failed to see any scripts inside the folder. just looks like the the folder is empty.
My questions is if my requirement is viable with NTFS permission.

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7. He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed.

He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:\users\All Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have came up empty. Before I said it couldn't be done, I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to do this.

Answer:Win 7 single user, merging users\All Users, Default User, Public, etc?

Just curious, but why does this annoy him so much? Surely it's not that complicated a system and all of his documents etc are stored in the same place, with more or less easy to use shortcuts to these directories placed throughout Windows 7?

I have a few Temp logons recently, and then had to copy my profile over to a new user account. Creation of the new user account seems to have gone pretty well, once I signed into my Microsoft account, everything associated with it is as it should be.

However, there a few of the older "Users" listed under This PC, which are not shown at the manage accounts page. Is there a simple way to delete the old accounts that are not in use. Deleting hem from file explorer did not work. Thanks.

Hi all,

My computer has three users on it (John, Lawrence, and Elizabeth). The problem right now is that John is the only one that can login to the computer.

For Lawrence and Elizabeth, their users don't appear at the login screen (not even in the bottom left hand corner). When the computer starts up, John is already selected to login and just has to input his password.

Also, when logged in as John, you are not able to see the "Switch User" button when clicking on the top left button of the start menu.

I have tried following already:
Running the "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbos" script in the command promptUsing the lusrmgr.msc to add the users

I have attached a screenshot that shows how there are multiple users on the computer, but there is no "Switch User" option available.

Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?

Thank you,
John Panzo

Most definitely, getting home some time before Xmas.

W7 is smoother, a bit quicker at some things, looks better...
You can also use NVidias Stereo analglyph glasses with games, doesnt work on XP unless you use outdated drivers which are crap for some newer games.
DX11 support, but it will be a while before I get a DX11 gfx card.

If not, that probably it.If it's already ticked, how much ram do you have in your pc? If it's less than 512mb it may be that it hasn't got enough 'oomph' to run both accounts at the same time.

currently under my c drive i have 7 users why would this be
i should only have 2-3

Answer:i keep seeing new users under C:\Users

Well, in your case, you should have at least 5. Public, Default, Default.migrated (this is common, it's a result of upgrading), and Administrator. are 4 standard ones, then it looks to me like you have 1 local account (Panda) and possibly 1 Microsoft account (aaron, Microsoft account profiles typically start with the first 5 letters of the email address). The aaron.DESKTOP-80I64MU is likely the result of a clean install you may have done, and after trying to log in with a Microsoft account, it discovered there was already one there, so it created a second account using the random machine name assigned when you did the install.

If you have not done a clean install, and you've not used a local account or not used a Microsoft account, then there would indeed be something strange going on.

No, certainly not. AV does a completely different job, and ideally you would use both, as well as a firewall etc. It's up to you though - personally I don't use any AV.

Hi,How do I only allow certain users to logon to a machine? Has it got something to do with Local Security Policy? The machine is running XP ProCheers

Answer:Only allow certain users to log on

When you set up user accounts in XP, as administrator, it is possible to set a password for each account. Only the person knowing that password, other than you as administrator, can then gain access to your PC, and then only for files allowed within that account.

I currently have windows xp home addition. The one that came with my Dell computer. I put an account on for my friend. I know him very well and trust him. I just have issues with people on my computer due to things happening in the past. Just by this alone I should have not put him on then. I gave him a limited account. But he has blocked me from seeing what he has downloaded and such. I don't really care too much in the nosey sense but I like to know all of the goings on on my computer. I don't think that is unreasonable. I just want to make sure that nothing goes wrong with this computer. Porn is ok on here I just want to make sure that nothing illegal is going on. Is there anyway to look into his account without deleting it or changing the password. I am not looking to go through all of his files. Just check on the downloads and such. Is there anyone who can help me.

It's just occurred to me that a considerable number of forum users are either Ex-pats or non UK residents. When people ask "where can I get so and so or this and that" I for one assume that I am reading a request from someone who has access to the same high street shops or out of town facilities that most of us enjoy. Even down here in deepest Cornwall we don't have the choice that is available to those of you who live in or near to bigger shopping complexes. We only recently got a PC World here about 18 months ago, before that I had to wait until I visited relatives in Wiltshire and Hampshire to visit this chain store. The point I am trying to make is, could people state whether they are looking for a geographical shop or an online outlet. Hope this makes sense.

I need this resolving, but I can't seemto find the problem. I have checked in the Local Security Policy, and everything is OK there. I've also checked the registry for the CrashOnAuditFail key, but it is set to 0.

Hello all,
I made the jump from 8.1 to Windows 10. All user accounts and setting seem to have carried over nicely. However, I would like to add an additional account. In Settings->Accounts->Family & other users, there is the button for Add a family member and one for Add someone else to this PC. Both do nothing when clicked. There are no other error messages. I am signed in as an administrative account, and it is a Microsoft Account.

Any ideas? Where I could go to get an error message? Chrome is my default browser, I've wondered if setting it back to edge would solve the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Cannot add new users

it seems to be a bug, had this same, added 2 different accounts, no error messages, no nothing, i had to reboot and they appeared. login worked too but it was too retarded of me to understand, that the password is blank by default - so on the first login, you need to switch password and for some reason, you cant use empty password - which i hate cause my kids are 3, 7 and 9 using that computer

Okay I want to get this remote but since its for MCE I need to have some files from XP Pro. I guess I could just use the one from ATI but the one for MCE looks nicer (or wait for AIW remote 2).
I saw this thread in another forum with the solution to get it to work with under XP Home so I want to try it out. All I need are the irbus.inf and irbus.pnf files from XP Pro. So can anyone help me out and make a zip file of them?
Heres the process:

i installed the MCE remote into XP Home tonight in about 5 minutes
it's a little driver loading hack i've used on a lot of devices at work...theoretically, according to MS, a driver written for Win2k should work on any XP or any 2003 OS...and XP Home and XP Pro are realistically the same except for a few features M$ doesn't want home users to have without forking over a few extra dollars
so to get the hack to work you need a few things...first, you need the irbus.inf and irbus.pnf files from an XP Pro machine...when the IR receiver is autodetected point it to irbus.inf
XP Home will then ask for the irbus.sys file from the SP1 CD...luckily i had installed SP1 on my XP Pro machine...i believe it should store the service pack files in the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 directory...i pointed it to there (i actually copied irbus.inf and the ServicePackFiles folder to a network share)
after that it was smooth sailing and everything installed as normal...4 things actually get installed, all related to the rem... Read more

2) Limited user

I would like to limit the Limited user's access to some programs. How would I go about doing this?

For example, I want AIM not accessible to the Limited user but available to Admin.

Thanks

Answer:Users...

i dont think you can set this up with windows, it was really not designed to be a true multi user os. Maybe with third party tools you can set this sort of thing up.

Question: win xp users ??

I have win XP no network connected just 1 box 2 users
admin. (root) and then a regular user. I don't really understand how all this works. like data storage and stuff

when i install a file, under admin, it is like not there under the other user, and vise versa, i am sure it is a setting that i have

the deal is this.
i do allot of stuff all the time that requires some admin prevliges
however i don't like running under admin cause the bad people can hack in and take over more control when under admin

so i am trying to understand how it works, the whole user set up thing, i have looked at several windows books and none of them explain it very well

Question: No users on log-in

When I turn on my laptop it gets to the Choose User screen, but there are no users to choose from, and the only option is to turn off the laptop. I haven't had it set up with passwords for years, so I shouldn't reach this screen at all.

Ctrl-alt-del gives me a login form with my username filled in, but doesn't accept any password (or no password).

I can't log in in safe mode, and I have tried every possible avenue that is open to me without getting into Windows first (through esc, f2, f8, f12 etc).

I have used the OS CD and tried repairing, and I've tried to setup a new XP OS and then chosen to repair when it finds the original version - it takes 45 minutes, but is exactly the same when it has finished.

Googling shows me that a number of other have had the same problem, but no-one seems to have found a cause or a solution.

Obviously I would like a solution - please!! Failing that, can anyone tell me (in simple terms) how I can rescue the data from my laptop before reinstalling XP completely - it's been too long since I backed up. If I install a new version of XP it will have to be in the same partition (unless someone can tell me how to set up a new partition without even being able to get to the command line). If I do this, is there any chance that I will be able to get at the data that is already there?

Question: Users

I currently have windows xp home addition. The one that came with my Dell computer. I put an account on for my friend. I know him very well and trust him. I just have issues with people on my computer due to things happening in the past. Just by this alone I should have not put him on then. I gave him a limited account. But he has blocked me from the account. He should totally have his privacy.

Thanks
Tete

It is against policy here at Bleeping Computer to help people defeat passwords. Sorry. No help here.

Question: users on xp pro

I have just added my children to my Win XP Pro' computer, on their own user accounts, can the programs that they will never use be removed from their start bars without affecting my start bar ?

Answer:users on xp pro

Yes, if you do it from Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs. Any programs listed here are available to everyone. Cut any that you want only for yourself. Now go to C:\Documents and Settings\<Your username>\Start Menu\Programs and paste them there.
