Preferred Solution: clearing one drive application settings from PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: clearing one drive application settings from PC

When you update to the cloud (which is what One drive is), it normally defaults to the primary user, which I assume is your wife.
If you want your own cloud use try using a Gmail account and Gmail Drive.

We have a fleet of laptops within our domain, and some of the GPO settings applied to them are causing VPN functionality issues.
We have created new GPOs which do not have the issue, however when we move the laptops to the new OU it seems like the previous problemmatic GPO settings are cached
and remain in play. If we deploy a new laptop in the new OU with the new GPOs we have no problems.

I need to be able to clear out the old settings without removing the machine from the domain, or reimaging the laptops.

I have tried this script with success on only one out of 4 laptops, perhaps someone can help me figure out what's missing or incorrect. I created this from info
found all over the web.

Any help is much appreciated!

Win XP SP2

I had a rootkit infection that got cleared with combofix but now, for the life of me, I can't get past that pesky "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection" when trying to status my ethernet connection. I have no IP details listed on the support tab and this message comes up when you hit "Repair"

I've been scouring the forums trying everything I can to resurrect the local area Connection. I've deleted the connections, rebooted, let them rebuild, deleted drivers, reinstalled the networking drivers from the Intel motherboard CD, etc. etc. I even found a registry mod that allows you to remove TCP/IP, which I did, rebooted, reinstalled it.. no change.

A couple of the items needed to be re-ticked when following the Microsoft troublehshooting instructions for 'disappearing network connection icons" which isn't really my problem.. it never disappears... it just doesn't work.

Any ideas while I still have a few follicles left?

Answer:Failed to query TCP/IP settings-- no internet after clearing rootkit

OK, some feedback on the resolution to this issue:

My loss of internet connectivty was caused by a rootkit removal tool (TSSKiller) quarantining my c:\windows\system32\ipsec.sys file. If you don't have that file in that folder you'll experience the symptoms as described in my initial post in this thread.

Countless hours were spent removing the connection, rebooting, allowing windows to recreate it, removing/reinstalling stack components, etc. etc. following procedures found in this and other forums. None of these tricks restored the connection.

Hope this helps!

I have both windows vista and windows xp.(seperate laptops)
both drive D's are showing as "memory full"
I'm getting terrible problems with windows vista as it keeps saying the memory is too small to do anything. The C drive isn't full so I assume the problem lies with the D drive.
I have removed quite a number of programmes but I reckon they were not stored in drive D as it still shows as completly full.

So is it possible to free up disk space on the D drive (assuming this is the source of the problem). I'm nervous about deleting programmes in case they are essential to running the computer.

I don't want to have many things on my computer so i don't mind dumping alot of stuff.

any help appreciated.

I need some help.

I need to know how to clear my hardrive. I need to install my home version of XP, but I need to clear my hard drive. Some advice have stated to got to the manufacturer's website to download ther wiping utility, but I cannot find my model. I have a 40gb Western digital (WD400LB), and I cannot locate it on the site.

Is there an easier way to do this w/o buying a new hard drive?

Brief History: my current oprating system is "not genuine" and I just purchased a "genuine" product. As you all know I cannot install Home over PRO. I have backed up all that I need. I just want to start over "CLEAN."

My netbook deleted its bootup file, now the thing won't work, and I don't even need it, so I'm trying to sell it. I want to clear the hard drive first, though, as the person will give me $40 less for it without it.

So I have DBAN uploaded to a USB. I tried to configure the BIOS to removable drive as the first in line, but it doesn't seem to work. (and I'm having a very very difficult time reaching the bios at all. The screen giving the option doesn't come up the majority of the time, and the key does work to get into it without that screen coming up.)

So anyway, tips?

Ok, im wanting to get rid of my computer and get a new one soon. Im going to be giving my family my old one and im wanting to wipe everything out, basically take it back to brand new factory settings and reinstall xp. Now, from what i hear, formatting the disk will not accomplish this, but rather i have to do a disk wipe? Im not exactly familiar with this. So basically, how would i go about completely erasing EVERYTHING off the drive and starting brand new? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Need Help Clearing Hard drive...

Well, it depends on where you bought your computer. If it was a HP or Compaq or something like that, you would go and use the recovery partition.

Otherwise, try this.

I've never used this before, since I usually just reformat and install XP, but if you're giving it to your family, I don't think there's any difference between a full wipe and just a quick format.

If you're really looking to wipe, the link above seems to be ok. Plus, Sourceforge is a reputable website so you don't have to worry about stuff.

Here's another one, directly on SourceForge as opposed to just being hosted on it

HiI am sure this topic will have been covered in the magazine at some point and if so could you please let me know which edition. However this is my request. I am hoping to purchase a new computer and wish to hand my old computer on to my daughter but want to clear it of my junk before passing it on. I can uninstall the software but I am not sure how to clear out the hard drive. I have a Quick Restore disk which I was able to use after it crashed once and that gave me all the original basic Windows 98 S.E. settings. The thing is that is how I would like to hand it over to her so she could have a clean slate for her stuff so please can you advise me how I go about it. Many thanks in anticipation.Dozy

Answer:Clearing my hard drive

If you are not worried about security wiping then the easy way is to create a Boot diskette containing the format program. Boot from that and do a 'format c:'. Repeat for any other logical drives. There are quicker utilities out there and those that claim to indellibly erase the data but this should do the job.

Hey guys, so I want to clear the hard drive on my laptop. I want to do this in order to make my computer run faster and to eliminate any programs/files I rarely use and to also eliminate any history of files. (I have Vista)

So the questions I have are:

1. How do I save the files I want (Word docs, music, picture files, etc.)
(I have a flash drive and access to another computer to put the files on for now, but is there an easier way?)

2. Is the best way to be sure that my computer is clean is to uninstall and re-install the operating system [vista]?
(If it is, how do I do that?)

3. Can I completely clear my hard drive of everything, and then re-install the OS, and have everything function normally?

Thank you very much for any help

Answer:Clearing Hard Drive

1) If you want to install Vista, it will automatically backup you old window file to a Folder named Window Old. But for the safety, I suggest that u backup you important file to another external hard disk ( like USB flash drive or external hard disk.

2) sorry because i can't answer 2nd question because my tech level no so high( haha..)

3) Why u want to completely clear your hard drive before re-install OS ? If u really want to , u can format your hard drive. After format, it will clean all the data in it. So, think before u format.

Hi Folks

I have an older Dell PC with a 40 gig hard drive.I would like to donate this PC to a local School but I need to erase the hard drive of all settings etc.Is their a way to erase it ?
Also If I can do this do I have to re install Windows XP ?
Any tips would be appreciated.

Answer:clearing a hard drive ?

And you will have to reinstall windows. Killdisk will overwrite every block on the drive including the recovery partition so if you have the recovery disk that came with the computer and you erase that partition, the disk won't work. I think you can select which partition you kill however so read the instructions.

In the past I have re-formatted thumb drives to remove all data.
I know "delete" actually lists the delete file/folder in the hidden "Recycle bin" on the thumb drive.

Recently I had to verify a WD portable USB HD and one of the features on the WD tool was to ... (this is where I am out of my depth) ... replace all segments/bits (?) with zeros.

What is (if there is one) the best way to clear a thumb drive ?
I want to re-use the thumb drives with 5GB data for 6 months storage
Security is not an issue.

any thoughts, thank you

Alright... so I am working with a pretty screwed up computer right now. It is running Win98. I have made back-up copies of all the Word and Excel files on floppies and now I think I want to flatten the hard drive... clear it all and start from new. How do I do this? Detailed instructions would be great.... in easy to understand terms haha. Thanks

Answer:Clearing the Hard Drive

Nitro:Basic steps:1. Make sure your Windows 98 CD is not very badly scratched and is not an upgrade (but a full version) CD.2. Back up all the files you want to save to a CD (if you have a CD-R or CD-RW optical drive) or to floppy disks.3. Make a Windows 98 or Me bootable floppy disk.4. Restart your computer with the boot disk (you do not have to enable CD-ROM support yet).5. At the command prompt type FDISK and press Enter.6. Follow the instructions to enable large disk support, delete all the partitions, make one large partition formatted with FAT32 (not FAT or FAT16)7. Restart the computer with the boot disk still in the floppy drive (you do not have to enable CD-ROM support yet).8. At the command prompt (i.e. the A:\>) type FORMAT C: and press Enter.9. When the format operation is complete, restart your computer (this time be sure to enable CD-ROM support).10. Put the Windows 98 CD in the optical drive.11. At the command prompt, type D:\Setup and press Enter.12. The Windows 98 setup program will begin; just follow the instructions on your monitor. For more help, see this article: post a message at this forum and we will try to help you out.Regards,Doc

I have an old Gateway M505XL laptop with a 60GB hard drive that runs well on XP Pro but is down to 9GB free space. I downloaded and used TreeSizeFree to analyze the drive and wound up with several areas that are full of files that may be removable:
12GB in WINNT/CSC Folder (my laptop synchs My Documents with the server at work & enables offline files)
7GB in System Volume Info/Restore Points
1.6GB in Recycler
Dozens of multi-MB $NTUninstall files (I believe in WINNT)

Which of these files can be safely removed? What is the best to remove them? What exactly are the large files in the CSC folder?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Clearing Space On XP Pro Hard Drive

I don't know at all about that WINNT\CSC folder that you are referring to. But I do believe that you should hang on to the $NTUninstallKBXXXXXX$ folders (they refer to the updates you receive or download from Microsoft).

Windows provides a pretty basic utility with XP - Disk Cleanup (go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools). It will clean out things like Temporary Files, the IE cache and suchlike. You could probably salvage about 512MB-1GB using it.

Fellow Lenovo R61i Series Users, I need further suggestions concerning how to clear more Crive SW Pre-Load disk space. My R61i came with a 80 GB hard drive. My "legitimate" programs and documents should be no more than 20 GB (maximum), yet my system continues to generate more and more files ... taking more space. I frequently receive the "Low Disk Space" message. Based upon your excellent suggestions - to date I have: 1. Unistalled unused and and unwanted programs (weekly)2. Deleted "downloaded" files from Lwilson747>Documents>Download (weekly)3. Run the "Clean" program (daily)4. Checked "Back-up and Restore" (I have no "Backups") (monthly) I have no desire to simply "purchase a larger hard drive", instead I would like to identify and resolve the root cause of this problem. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. hello guys, i have a question about my new 200 GB hard drive.

I want to tranfer all my important files to the new hard drive after i install an operating system to it. However, i would like to format my old drive and completely erase everything else on it. The reason i want to do this is so i wont transfer over any corrupt files and the likes, so i would like to know how to do that. Afterwards,(or maybe before) I would like to partition my new hard drive and have lenux running on the original harddrive.

Do you guys think this is a good/efficient setup? you recommend anything else?

im installing windows xp to the new hard drive...Im mostly trying out lenux out of curiosity and because someone recommended it any good?

what are the benifits/disadvantages of partioning a hard drive?

thanks to anyone who has suggstions and or/comments

Answer:New Hard Drive- clearing out other data

Welcome to MajorGeeks, waryuser.

Since you are not concerned about security, reformatting the original drive should be good enough. Mind you, files can be recovered from a reformatted drive. Reformatting a drive does not securely erase the drive, in and of itself.

I myself absolutely love Linux, and would encourage you to experiment with it.

200 GB is such a large drive. Partitioning is absolutely necessary there, so, as you said, why not, when you are partitioning the new harddrive, for the Windows install, leave about, oh, say, a 3 GB partition (for the eventual swap partition for the linux install), and maybe a 7 GB partition for the linux install itself.

Then, if you have no special distros in mind yet, you may be interested in some of these:

1) knoppix: a bootable cd that runs without touching your hard drive at all (Unless you WANT to install it, that is)

Ubuntu: A very ``up & coming'' distro geared for first time linux users:

I would also recommend these distros for the first timer:

For example, when I do a search for a file I created in Microsoft Excel, it is still there, eventhough I just reinstalled that program. Could someone please help me in wiping off my hard drive so I can start from scratch.

Thank you.

Answer:Solved: Clearing hard drive

Uninstalling a program is not going to delete the files that you created with the program.

If you want to do a clean install of Windows, follow one of these guides.
Windows XP Home install guide
Windows XP Pro install guide
Windows 2000 install guide

If you feel there is something wrong with your system you may want to post a HiJackThis log before reinstalling. Maybe you have some spyware on your computer. You can download it from here.

I recently swapped out my old primary HDD (inherited from my old Gateway) for a newer, smoother, safer one that happens to be twice the size. The partition didn't properly take during setup, but that's not my issue.

In total, I currently have three drives in my chassis, two of which can be safely connected: the new primary and an old secondary storage drive. The one that's giving me trouble is, you guessed it, the old one that still has the operating system on it.

My initial plan was to wipe and format the old drive once the new one was running, but it seems that if I try to connect it, upon start up the system only recognizes it as a conflicting piece of extraneous hardware, and refuses to boot. This makes wiping it clean a bit more difficult. The desired outcome would be turning the former primary drive into a second secondary, that is to say slave, storage drive.

The bottom line: I'm considering a couple courses of action here, and if I could get some feedback on which has a higher chance of success, that would be great.

1) Safely disconnecting my two drives containing valuable information, connecting the old one and running a nuke boot (boot nuke?) disc (or USB drive as it happens) instantly destroying all data, including the filesystem and giving me an--apparently--fresh drive that I can hook up and format. My only problems would arise if the nuke boot either completely destroyed the HDD, or if it changed (erased) settings on the motherboard, ... Read more

It's me again, y'all. I've tried everything I know to do to get my computer running right. I'm infected with all sorts of trojan horses (downloader, dropper, startpage, etc.) Yes, I have virus protection but these are somehow finding their way through. I've also got all sorts of spyware. I'm running spybot search and destroy and yahoo anti-spy. I'm ready to throw it in the yard, I swear! LOL! But before I do, I want to try to wipe out my hard drive and start from scratch. I just can't figure out how to do that. I'm running Windows ME on this puter. Can any of you fine people instruct me on how to wipe it out? I'm beyond desperate now. I know you guys will pull me through like you always have! Thanks in advance!!

Answer:HELP!!! I've resorted to clearing our my hard drive completely!

This should help you Lynn

its sad that you have come to the point of having to re-install but in the end its a wise choice, just rememeber to before you wipe clean download and save any AntiVirus programs and AntiSpyware programs so you can install them before going online.

Plus backup any inportant files data etc eg. Favorites folder ( I woudl hate to loose all my bookmarked webby sites )

hi all.....i need some help in what to do when you have bought a second hand do i make sure the previous owner has not accessed unlawful sites....or how do i wipe out all trails....especially if computer is used by more then one person(all men)....can i do this each time of usuage by who ever? i have been told that it is impossible to clean a computer once used as accessed sites always leave a trace what ever you doany advise still relatively new to all this....thanks

Answer:second hand computer.....clearing hard drive

No need to worry about the hdd; any trace of sites visited will be left on the ISP records which is more important than the hdd. You can format, reinstall windows, and if really worried, get something like eraser from click here to clean the hdd somewhat. But it is never posible to remove all traces, and there is nothing for you to worry about.

Can I safely clean some files from my hard drive. Computer will not defrag says theres not enough room on drive. Has never had a scan disk it has an analysis. Wont let me upload my pictures for printing says theres not enough room

Answer:clearing hard drive on windows 2000

Restart in safe mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK".

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and history in Internet Options. And clean out your c:\documents and settings\%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp
folder, do this for every profile on the machine. Also check for c:\temp and c:\winnt\temp, empty those as well. It's a good idea to do that regularly.

I have a desktop computer that I want to sell. It has XP Home and I do not have backup disks nor do I see any hidden partitions, etc. Bottom line, I will not be able to nuke and reinstall the OS. Anyone have any suggestions as to the "best" way I can clean the hard drive (including registry files or anything else I might not be aware of) without removing the OS and drivers? I don't think the computer has any significant personal data or anything like that on it but I'd like to do the best I can to clear it. I know it won't be perfect but I appreciate any ideas you might have. Thanks

Answer:Solved: Clearing a hard drive before selling (without nuking)

1. Uninstall any programs you don't want to pass on, then search the hard drive for remaining folders related to those programs and delete them

2. Delete all IE history, cookies, temporary internet files, ect

3. Open a command prompt and use the following 3 commands, hitting enter after each. the last command will delete all temp files, this may take a little time be patient. Space after e and before * Space before each / No spaces in first command

erase *bak /s
erase *.tmp /s

4. Delete any other folders and files you deem necessary, then empty the recycle bin

5. Create a new User account, log into it and delete the old user account(s).

6. last but not least, use "Eraser" to erase the free space on your hard drive, I prefer version 5.8.8 5/5.8.8/Eraser 5.8.8.exe/download

Once installed, right click on the C drive in explorer and select "erase Unused space", then click options and set it to 1 passes, OK, then Yes. This will take quite some time depending on the size of the hard drives empty space.

This will ensure anything you deleted will be erased for sure, because windows does not actually erase it from the hard drive when you delete it.

We do not recommend any registry cleaners here, they cause more problems than they are worth.

You would need a SATA to USB adapter or enclosure like one of these: 600006255

If you buy a enclosure you can also permanently use the drive as an external drive for backups or storage.

Dear forumers,

I have an issue with a non-unicode program. I want to learn to type the Russian standard keyboard layout (ЙЦУКЕН) so have an application which teaches me called Anykey 1.02 Demo. The problem is that this is not a fully unicode application and since my system is not set to russian at Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Advanced tab, Anykey won't display cyrillic letters correctly, it shows questionmarks instead. Of course, it'd be simple to just set up the system run non-unicode applications in Russian, but it also messes up everything (another non-unicode apps). It's not really comfortable to restart the system every time I want to practice by Anykey, so I'm asking if there's any way to run an application (only one, separately from the other) with different non-unicode settings (eg. a command or *.manifest file or sg.)?

Thanks for your help

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Answer:Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your s... Read more

We applied some UAC settings via Group Policy to all Windows 7 machines. Now some old applications are throwing up a prompt and the users normal credentials wont run the app. The point is that the app DID NOT require admin privileges before we applied
the settings. The users were able to launch the app without prompts and run it successfully.
Does anyone know which security or UAC setting may be causing this? Remember that the apps ran perfectly well before these settings were applied  without an administrative account.

I am using a custom windows 7 theme that uses my preferred combination of window color choices etc.

However, this color scheme does become an inconvenience when I am working in certain applications like Autodesk and Photoshop as it makes their respective UI's very obscure.

Is there a way to exempt certain applications from personalization settings?

Answer:How to exempt an application from personalization settings

Welcome to the Seven Forums
You are going to get that with a custom theme and some programs look just fine while others do not. You will need to either find a new custom theme or switch to the default Aero theme when using those programs.

Kaspersky's Trusted Application Mode (TAM) at maximum settings will protect the system.

Technical infos:

Trusted Application Mode performs a system scan and, after a user review of the scan results, "white-lists" (= Allows) only those applications and scripts on the system that are included in the Kaspersky databases or approved by the user.

Any unknown files are by default blocked by TAM from start-up unless the user creates an exception allowing the file to run. In other words, TAM "black-lists" all unknown files except unrecognized system critical files (which require user verification and permission to run).

For best security...

The Trusted Application Mode scan must be run on a clean\dis-infected system; a completely clean system is critical for default-deny to work. A complete PC reset is the most reliable method to ensure an absolutely clean system. Then install Kaspersky and enable TAM.

The user must carefully review the TAM scan results to confirm no unwanted\malicious files\scripts are allowed on system.
User must configure Application Control, after the TAM scan, with the following settings:

Automatically move unknown applications to "Untrusted."
Dis-able "Trust digitally singed applications."
Dis-able "Load rules for applications from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN)."
System "Lock-Down":

Using the above settings will block the installation\execution of any file\script - Trust... Read more

I'd just upgraded to windows 10 yesterday, and I've been having issues with browsing files. Today, I was trying to change my background from settings, and as soon as the file browser opened up, it closed straight away. Settings also stopped working. Hello, I wanted to see what are the Lenovo settings that we can alter by going to the Lenovo icon on the Metro view of my Lenovo Thinkpad S1 Yoga, but every time I try to go there (I've rebooted 3 times already) I get the message to either share usage statistics or not, and none of the buttons are clickable (I've tried the mouse, touchscreen, tabulation)... the Lenovo screen just closes after a few seconds and the application exits, so I cannot use those settings. I downloaded a package I saw here for 'SettingsDependency', but that didn't make any difference either. Any idea, what the problem could be? or maybe how could I disable that initial question about the usage statistics to see if I could get to the app and start using it? Thank you.

First time posting.

I ran combofix.exe a few weeks ago before I knew of the help available via these forums. When I ran the program the following files were detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe

I do nightly scans using AVG Free 8.5 and Spybot Search and Destroy (both up-to-date). Nothing was detected in either scan last night.

I ran combofix.exe again tonight and the following was detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe

Now that I realized there is a lot of help available on these forums, I'm here looking for some guidance.

I do have a combofix log file that was produced after the second combofix scan and I'd be more than happy to post it here, but I will wait for further instruction first.

My main concern is why inst.exe is showing up a second time.

Thank-you for any help you can provide.

Answer:inst.exe found in c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\

I also ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Quick Scan after the combofix completed.

No infections were detected.

Answer:Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flacor.d

Re: Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flac

You have skipped many steps of the Read and Run Me first procedures. You will need to refer to the below running what you did not before, and then once completed, run MGTools.exe again and attach the zip file it creates along with the other requested logs.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ &a... Read more

I've never seen this before. Double click on e:\ in my computer and it says not a valid win32 application. Seen it when opening applications but not a drive! all other drives are fine. First time i saw it it was looking for install.exe, which i remember deleting a week or so ago. Most likely because it was a missing shortcut in registry or because it was corrupted or something simular. I dont know what to do about this, as I said never seen it happen b4 on a drive. You can open e drive when you right click and explore but when double click sometimes it tries to locate install.exe. No virus, but did have a few recently, I wont put it down to that though and dismiss because I am very vigilant and remove virus immediately, and scan twice a day, always scanning b4 opening apps. Weird one! Logically, how do i stop it looking for install.exe when openning?

Thank you for reading my tale of woe!

I recently had some malware infections that I simply could not remove, using a huge arsenal of AV scans & removers, so I got a new hard drive ("H"), and attached old one ("C") as a slave. After configuring "H" with new XP Pro OS/Avira AV/Comodo Firewall, I used my original Outlook 2007 CD to install it.

I got the basics done (importing .pst files), but there are a whole lot of details that aren't moving to the new Outlook. I have gone through the Microsoft support pages, which normally I find super helpful, but this time I seem to be going in circles. I am anxious to get the data off C so we can re-format it: I hate having the infected drive around.

If anyone can provide any insights into *any* of the following obstacles, I would be most appreciative.

1. -Install went apparently well, but when I tried to install an Outlook add-on (Calender Print Assistant from Microsoft download center) I got a message that my copy of Outlook could not be validated: "Problem: The validation process could not be completed because a copy of Microsoft Office® on this computer has not been activated." Following the Microsoft instructions led me in circles, warning that my copy might be counterfeit. I purchased it new from Amazon over a year ago. All the Microsoft support pages tell me that I must use the Activation Wizard during installation to enter product key, which I did, and it was accepted. Even th... Read more

I have a well maintained laptop with legit windows xp home, SP2.

I cant burn cds at all!

If i use the xp burner it says "no disc in drive - insert blank disc"
Nero says "drive in use by another application.
Its a QSI combo drive that functions perfectly in every other way besides burning.

i also have alcohol 120% and clonecd 5 installed but they are not ticked to start when windows does.

any ideas????

Answer:Drive is in use by another application!!!!!!!

I dont have a 100% correct answer but here is my 2 cents:
Much like having multiple Anti-virus software on the system, having multiple and competing CD burning software installed is not smart, not saying they wouldn't work but could create problems.
If no one comes with a more easier and logical workaround, try this:
Uninstall all CD burning software, then go to Device Manager and remove the CD-ROM drive and reboot afterwards. Windows XP should see the drive automatically and re-install its drivers then re-install just one of the CD burning softwares and try again.
Like I said this is only a suggestion...

I have a problem with my DVD writer. It plays cd`s but if I try to record I get the message `DVD drive used by another application`. I am sure this happened when I put a RW-CD formatted by INCD. I deleted INCD from the add/remove programs and have looked up possible answers in previous forums and tried the Nero General Clean Tool and reinstalled Nero. I still cannot use the writer to write. Is there someone who has had this problem and cured it. I am desperate because I want to copy holiday photos for a friend.

I have an application drive that I use for Steam, and installing software and my OS on another drive. Is it possible to clone my application drive to a new drive without any change?

I want to do this because I think my application drive is slowly dying.

Answer:Clone application drive

of course you can.
you may just need to modify the drive letter (for the new drive) after you remove the old data/application drive.

You could even just have both drives connected and do a simple copy

I frequently get this approximate (not exact words) message when attempting to use drive A or B:
The volume/drive is in use by another application/process.
This happens after I have finished using that drive for a previous purpose. For instance, I have copied files to the drive and have removed the disk and inserted another. Or, maybe I have formatted the disk and are attempting to copy files to it. It also happens when I am creating a boot disk or another type of disk using a disk imaging program.

So, it seems there is no connection to any particular program and that Windows 2000 is the common denominator. Also, it never happens under Windows 98 on the same machine.

Any suggestions what this might be and how to prevent it?

Go to search by the start button.
Type device manager
Inside device manager look for any small yellow warning markers. If none found go to the driver for the drive and make sure that it is up to date
If that does not work, try a system restore from about 3 days before the problem began.

I have an Inspiron 3050 with small C drive. I connected a 1tb external hard drive as my D drive which is working fine. In Windows 10, went to  Settings -> System -> Storage. Screen shows "New Location" pull-down menus for photos, music, documents, videos etc. that permits specification of the D drive for each category but pull-down menu for "Applications" is greyed out. Can't select an alternative to the C: drive for "Applications".How can I specify the D: drive to install other application software?

Please respond directly to me at <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

Answer:Can't install application on the D: drive in Windows 10 Pro.

You must install all programs/applications on the C drive with windows or they will not work. The tiny 3050 is usually used as a second computer since it is too small to use as your main computer. Use it for getting emails and surfing the web.

My father's PC has been acting up. He likes to play World of Warcraft a lot, but for some reason every time he tries the game crashes after about 45 seconds with an "Unable to read WoW.exe". I've even reinstalled the game, with the same problems.

I'm going to download the official Seagate drive checker, but I was wondering if there is another one I could try.

Also... if you have any other input as to what the problem might be, I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Need an application to check a hard drive

You could do that. Also run a disk error check on the drive (right click the drive and go to properties, then the tool tab). Then i would run disk defragment as well as AntiVirus/spyware software.

I have a Pavilion dv2500 whose optical drive is not functioning properly.  It's detected by the system, but will not recognize/autolaunch anything inserted in the drive.  When I try to open the drive through My Computer, it says " F:/ Application not found! " I have tried the registry fix which is always posted here in response to CD/DVD drive issues. I have tried reinstalling through device manager ("This device is working properly"). I have deleted/reinstalled all programs using the drive (iTunes, Nero, etc.) This is intensely frustrating, any additional help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:HP dv2500 -- CD/DVD drive "Application not found"

I'm happy to report that I got it to work -- upon physically removing the drive, I noticed that the screw bracket holding it in place was bent outwards, presumably preventing all the contacts from linking to the MoBo. Hopefully the system restore will quicken things up a bit as well. Thanks again for your assistance, Bookworm.

Needing a quick solution for an auto repair I searched for the original repair manual to download, and came across a link. Avast, typically warns me of risks if I choose to proceed, of which is good enough for me to opt out, but nothing popped up this time. When I (nervously), clicked on the download it then asked if I wanted to open folder, open, etc. I opened the folder and it was the DVD Drive F, odd, so I chose to let Avast run a scan on it. It came up as a PUP, but would not allow me to "quarantine," fix, or anything else. It is an application (.exe) showing a description of the properties in the image included below.

I feel like an idiot, and why I come to you before I end up being an idiot for trying to remove this .exe from my Drive F:

Type of file: Application (.exe)

I installed a program on a different computer and it ran just fine, but when I installed it on this computer (ASUS P4C800E Deluxe) it seemed to install and said it was successful, but when I went to use the program this is the message I got: "Could not run your drive information, please run the Drive Selector application." I don't understand what that means or where to go...the program is for copying DVD/videos. I tried installing it twice with the same results. The drives are recognized and run just fine for all other programs. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Answer:Running Drive Selector Application??

My guess is that this has to do with the Zone selector.
When you buy a DVD drive, it's generally set to a specific Zone.
I think that the program that you've installed is trying to work on a different
zone from the one you DVD drive is set to.
Is your DVD drive on your other computer is multi-zone?

When I try to back up some pictures I get the error that the drive is in use by another application. WTH?! nothing else is running in the background. I uninstalled Dells crappy programs so they are not interfering.
I went into the task manager and no other apps are running and I shut down all but the basic processes that are running.

I wanted to download a manual from a website, but when I tried to open the folder my DVD Drive F: CDROM had it as an application (.exe) showing a description of the properties in the image included below. I do not have anything in this (external) drive (CD/DVD) for it to exist there, nor did I want to save it. I scanned it with Avast before doing anything, and it came up as a PUP.
