Downloading emails from Gmail to Thunderbird

Question: Downloading emails from Gmail to Thunderbird

For years I have used my own domain email addresses hosted with Gmail for all my email requirements, and have had no problems. My settings with Gmail are such that the message on the server is deleted once it has been accessed via Thunderbird.
One thing confuses me though. If I am away on holiday, I sometimes access my messages directly from Gmail using a tablet, and as most of them are unimportant, I then delete them manually from Gmail and then also delete them from the 'bin' folder. However, when I return home at the end of the holiday and switch on my PC, all the messages are then downloaded to Thunderbird, though I have deleted them previously.
Obviously the reason for accessing them on holiday is to avoid having hundreds of messages when I return home, but clearly I am failing to achieve this. Can somebody please explain why this happens, and how I stop it.

Preferred Solution: Downloading emails from Gmail to Thunderbird

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been trying to follow this guide to get my local emails uploaded onto Gmail:

http://www.zoliblog.com/2007/10/24/simplified-guide-to-importing-all-your-archive-email-into-gmail/

Unfortunately it seems that this guide is for Outlook users, and I use thunderbird. Does anybody know of a way to import local emails from Thunderbird to Gmail?

I've heard of the "Gmail Loader" program, but AFAIK this program will strip the emails of their original send dates. What I'd really like is for a solution where all my local messages can be sent and stored on Gmail, with the original sender information retained, and the original send dates retained. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Import thunderbird emails to Gmail

Here are the instructions from gmail to enable IMAP in thunderbird -> http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662

Just attach to GMAIL via IMAP and the drag and drop you saved local email to GMAIL through thunderbird.

Make sure you enable IMAP in your GMAIL settings under Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

I've set up my Gmail account for reading emails via IMAP and sending emails all with Mozilla's Thunderbird. I followed Google's directions on how to setup the client to work with Thunderbird. It reads the emails correctly but when I send emails I get:
"An error occured while sending mail. The mail server responded: INCORRECT DOMAIN IN MAIL/RCPT COMMAND. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again."

As it suggests I check the outgoing mail setting and try again with the same results.

Has anyone else run into this issue and how did you resolve it?

Answer:Thunderbird and Gmail, sending emails

Not sure. I remember setting my GMail up for pop, but not IMAP. I would post something over on the Mozilla support forums - more people read that and could help.

Hello everyone,
I have downloaded thunderbird on MS vista and set up an account with my gmail account. I set up the settings for checking the new mails in every 5 minutes. Thunderbird has downloaded a lot of mails from gmail (about 5440) but after that it says no new mail on the server. but the last mail it downloaded is on 5th may 2008. I have a lot of mails after 5th may even on my gmail account. I am not getting how to download all the mails from my gmail account. I will be very happy if I can get all my gmail mails in thunderbird so that I can access them at any time offline.

Thanks in anticipation...

I think this is called 'remote content' but I'm not sure. What steps might I take to remedy this situation? I realize this might be a Mozilla or Google issue - but perhaps someone can give me some options that I can't get in those forums.

Hi this is my first time on this Tech Support, so tell me if I'm asking a common question that the answer can be found elsewhere.
I am using Thunderbird, have since Outlook Express didn't work July 07.
All was working OK, I leave my computer on all the time, connected to internet and Thunderbird on, I went out at 6pm came home around 9pm and my computer had restarted? Maybe there was a power failure while I was out? So I opened up Thunderbird email again, to check out what new emails I'd received, but I kept getting "Alert" messages for all 7 of my email addresses. "Could not connect to the server. Connection was refused" After I'd called my ISP Optusnet.com.au and told them the probelms, they wouldn't support my problem because I'm using Thunderbird, not Outlook Express, they suggested I remove all email accounts and re-enter them, and that would fix it. So I removed the email accounts and re-entered them again. I could not see any place in the set-up area to add in any passwords, so I guess you don't need them for Thunderbird? So I re-added all 7 email account settings. But the emails still will not download from the server. They are on the server as the Technical Support at Optusnet, checked for me.
He stated I needed to type in the incoming and outgoing server as mail.optusnet.com.au, which I did for that part, even though it shows on the finished form for outgoing server name : suzee3-mail.optusnet.com.au.
Is that OK? Previously I set my email def... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Thunderbird Emails not Downloading

Hi Suzee3 and welcome to TSF,

I checked at your ISP and the servers are correct. Go Here if you want to double check them.
The Suzee3 on the outgoing is right. T-bird just displays it that way to keep the login info for the multiple accounts seperate.

Here's a link to Mozilla on connection errors. See if anything there applies.

One thing you could try is to click Tools>Options>Privacy>Passwords tab>Edit saved passwords. Remove the login information for one of the usernames (try just your main account). The mailbox:// is the Incoming and smpt:// is the Outgoing. Close T-bird.
Open T-bird and you should be asked for your password. Enter it and see if it downloads for that account. If it does, repeat the above for all accounts.

The question really says all about what I want to do, or need help on. I recently signed up for a new outlook account to try out the new outlook preview and I've set up gmail to automatically forward new messages to my outlook account so that I can use outlook to manage my gmail account.

Do any of you know how I would be able to forward the old messages, and not the new ones, to my outlook? I already know that they can be fetched into outlook by outlook's very own service, forwarding would be faster, so..?! Also, since I now use outlook to send email on behalf of my gmail account, how do I make it sync each email I send using outlook with my gmail - so that gmail has it all?

TY in advance. Please do help.

have been using gmail on thunderbird via IMAP, works great most of the time, havwe a question.

On the folders on the left of the thunderbird screeen I noticed i have created some as subfolders of "[gmail]" and some as subfolders of the top item in the list, ie my gmail address. Having checked that they are all stored on gmail not remotely they are, however, those folders that are stored under "[gmail]" are prefixed as such, those under the top item (my address) are prefixed by IMAP.

What does this mean? Should I create all my folders under "gmail" or the top item if I want to store them all online??

Thanks!

Answer:Gmail via thunderbird

Store them on the top itemif you want them online..Store them in you created folders if you'd like them as offline..

I currently use virginmedia as my service provider and used Thunderbird for my e-mails. However, Virgin have recently upgraded their service and it has resulted in many of my mails, which I can see in my virginmedia mail in-box, not appearing in my Thunderbird in-box. Virgin want £60 to sort this out so I want to switch to gmail instead, but hopefully transferring my Thunderbird address book, previous in-box mails and sent box mails.
Is this all possible if not can anyone tell me how to install Thunderbird on gmail please?
Useless with IT.

Answer:How can I use Thunderbird with gmail

Hi
I use Thunderbird and have gmail accounts. Yes, they work together without issue as far as my experiences go.
Before changing emails accounts to gmail, have you tried checking your settings for your Virgin accounts in Thunderbird? To do this, Tools, Account Options and then click on your account/s in the left hand pane, working your way down from the account name do the account settings etc.
Also, you could try deleting your Virgin account and then re-set it up after checking what settings you need. You could do a search in Google for the settings you need, so as to be sure you have the right settings in the first place.
Apologies if I'm 'teaching you to suck eggs'. I appreciate you may have already tried this
Failing all that, certainly try gmail account. Good luck. Post back with any progress or otherwise. I'm sure others, probably with far more knowledge than myself, will be posting more suggestions too.

I'm using thunderbird and I have a gmail email address. I really like using Thunderbird but the one thing I don't like is that when I check my mail with thunderbird it removes it from gmail so I can only see my mail on my local computer. I'd like to set it up (if possible) that checking my mail in thunderbird would not remove it in gmail. And what would be awesome is if I delete an email in thunderbird, it moves it to the trash in gmail.

Last night I went to add Thunderbird and it could not connect to Gmail. Today I get a email from Gmail saying that it prevented someone from logging into my account last night (which would have been me). It says it does this to protect me from less secure apps like Outlook and Thunderbird. So, is Thunderbird less secure or is this another part of the plot for Google to control the world?

Answer:Thunderbird and Gmail

Thunderbird and Outlook clients both work just fine with Gmail but your Gmail account online need to be configured correctly first. The settings are under Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Once you have done that you can then configure your account in the clients.

Operating System: Win 7Mozilla Thunderbird: 24.3.0Platform: PcHello forum and more experienced elders. I am having problems with syncing of Gmail in Thunderbird. I am missing some fundamental understanding and searching for my problems seems to give me different results which don't seem relevant. I'll try to summarize my questions below.1) Can i have my Gmail Web-mail folders sync to Thunderbird using POP3 settings? I don't wish to use IMAP settings, is this possible? In Thunderbird i have used the "Get Mail" option, I am using POP3 settings, i have emails dating from 2011 - 2013 howeveram missing the remaining more up to date emails. Is this because the inbox is full? Also my sent & inbox mail are all together mixed in the inbox of Thunderbird.2) How can i import my Gmail folders as they are in webmail into Thunderbird?3) Within "Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings", I have the option "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)",   "2. When messages are accessed with POP" selected to "deleted Gmail's copy". "Disable IMAP"How can I return to Gmail web-mail so I may start from the beginning and delete my Thunderbird account without losing my data and do things properly. Assuming that i should export Thunderbird mail back to basic Google web-mail?Your Samaritan interest is deeply appreciated.Cos

I'm posting this here because I think this is a security issue.

I decided to archive all my Gmail messages by downloading them to my computer via Thunderbird. However, after I installed the program and entered in my account information (it even seemed to auto configure properly), the message I get is ?Configuration could not be verified ? in the username or password wrong?? I found some information that, with changes to Gmail, only a specific version of Thunderbird going forward would work. I downloaded the latest one. When looking into Google security, there is a new permission page setup that you have to give permission to Android apps so that they can be allowed to access your account information. However, I don?t know how to give Thunderbird permission.

Is there a way to give Thunderbird permission to access your Gmail?

Hi,

I installed Thunderbird email client for my gmail account.

When I started to add account I found one options specially for Gmail. Wow! Nice, I thought I proceeded. It was simple and it started to work. Thunderbird was using POP this way.

Next when I checked Google's directions for adding account to Thunderbird, they tell to use IMAP. Completely different procedure.

Should I use IMAP or POP? Why does Google gives directions to use IMAP for Thunderbird but POP for rest like Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora?

Please someone explain. Thanks in advance

Answer:Thunderbird and gmail confusion

Hello Romeo29,

You can use POP or IMAP for either one. Here is the difference. With IMAP mail, when messages are downloaded to your e-mail client's Inbox, they also remain on the server. In other words, if you shut off your computer, went to the library, and opened your g-mail account in webmail, you would see all your messages that were previously downloaded to your inbox at home.

Now, let's say that you decided, while on web-mail, to delete some of those messages in the inbox. When you go back home, open your e-mail client, the client will reload the messages from the inbox, but the ones you deleted from the inbox while on the webmail interface will now be gone from the inbox in Thunderbird as well.

Now, if you are using POP, the messages downloaded to your Inbox will no longer be in the Inbox on the webmail interface. Now here is what is rather interesting with g-mail in contrast to some other e-mail providers. All messages that were downloaded to your computer you can still find in the trash box on g-mail's webmail interface. With other e-mail providers, those messages would no longer be on the server at all.

Going back to I-MAP. If you are using an e-mail client, if you move messages from your inbox to local folders, with most e-mail providers, those messages would now be gone from the provider's servers. With g-mail, those messages will appear in Trash. If you move messages to folders you create under the e-mail account, those messages will then appear in ... Read more

I am trying to help a friend integrate both his RoadRunner and GMail accounts into Thunderbird and his problem is with GMail.

Firstly, I have verified we are using the correct user name and password by logging into GMail on the web. I have opened my Thunderbird and his Tuunderbird side-by-side and compared the settings to be identical. I have also opened his GMail "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" and mine side-by-side and those settings are identical also. Mine works and his doesn't.

I have tried all of the suggestions on this page to no avail.

I have also done screen captures of my settings and his so you can see they are identical. These are his screen shots. Mine will be in my next post.

Hello everyone. I have a friend who has a few PC's, one is hers, one is her husbands, and another is at a vacation home. They have a Gmail account they share and all of the PC's have the latest version of Thunderbird with the Gmail account setup in it. What they're finding is that if one Thunderbird client downloads a message then it's unavailable for the other clients to download. We've checked the settings in Thunderbird and they're all set to leave the items in the Gmail inbox until they are deleted manually. Any thoughts on why this happens? Is this normal and it's just not possible for a shared mailbox to work in the way they'd like it to work? If this just can't work is there an e-mail option out there that will work? Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.?

Hi, I use Sky email and downloaded Thunderbird v.3 for my email client but it has created a Gmail folder and its subfolders under my sky email account. Now I get duplicates of every email sent and received in their relative boxes/folders. Is this because Sky email is just another version of GoogleMail and therefore it's using both at the same time?I don't want two of everything, just to have one email arrive in the Sky Inbox and no other copy in a Gmail inbox, let alone Gmail itself , is all I want. When I turned my computer on today, I found that Thunderbird had lost the details of the Gmail account. So I set up a new account using my old account details, and it managed to find the file folders for my emails stored on my computer.

Although I can send emalis, I cannot receive them, it keeps returning a 'timeout' error when I try to access Gmail.

Accessing Gmail is no problem however through the web interface.

Check your settings. Look at them carefully. Sometimes a simple spelling mistake or a , instead of a . or even the spacing will throw everything off kilter. I cannot check my e-mail using IMAP in Thunderbird.

I was able to a few weeks ago without problem. Suddenly, I get the whole "Login to imap.googlemail.com failed" error. I am asked to enter my password, which I do, however Thunderbird thinks the password is incorrect for some reason.

I have attempted to google this error, but nearly every instance involves the @gmail.com domain. However, that's not my domain I'm trying to connect with. I'm trying to connect through [email protected], which is associated with Gmail. I have also checked VT's site on resolving these issues, which tells me to use the proper ports and the proper imap site. However, this still doesn't work.

Neither imap.googlemail.com or imap.gmail.com is working. Every one gets the same "login to server imap.gmail.com / imap.googlemail.com (depending on the IMAP server I am trying to connect with) failed".

I've done everything I can think of to force this client to comply. I've enabled IMAP in VT Gmail. I've also set SSL on.

I'm pretty much stumped. I have been able to connect to Gmail without problem previously, and then all of a sudden one day this doesn't work. It's very frustrating. If anyone has any potential solutions, please let me know.

Edit: I found out I can forward my email, and then receive it on another account. It'll have to do.

Okay, I'm ready to make the switch, but I have a couple questions. First, I'm an old school Hotmail/OE user, but not a paying member. I was going to just pay for Hotmail and get HotPopper, but I'm giving MS the boot as a whole for e-mail.

What I WANT to do is move all of my Hotmail/OE folders and contacts to TBird, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do that without moving all of my settings, which I might need HotPopper for, no? (after this I would setup my GMail account in TBird)

Let's say I can move all of my folders and contacts. I don't need my Hotmail addy to work in TBird, but I DO want to setup my GMail addy in TBird to use with all of my ex-Hotmail folders & contacts. That shouldn't be a problem, right?

Then I'll send out my message from Hotmail.com to everyone (with my GMail addy as reply-to), and just keep monitoring my Hotmail account for messages that need to know of my change to my Gmail addy.

Can anyone see anything I'm missing here? Anything that might make this transition easier

At the beginning of the semester, my school switched their email server to a gmail server. I tried creating an account in thunderbird under the school email. If I set it up as a gmail account, I'm only able to my user name as the "@gmail.com" portion is already filled. Only problem is the school email is still "[email protected]" rather than "@gmail.com"

I then tried creating it as a normal email account. I was able to add the proper email address and used the same settings I used when setting up my person gmail account. Now when I try to retrieve my messages, I get an error stating the server pop.gmail.com responded username and password not accepted.

So I guess my question would be how could I set up my school's gmail account to work with thunderbird. I know it could be done I just don't know how to properly set it up.

Now when it comes to setting up an email client I usually like to stay away. I always get confused and give up. So if all help could be kept simple and painless I'd appreciate it!

Many thanks in advance!

Hi:

I had to change my password on Gmail and now no messages are coming through to Thunderbird. I went into My Accounts and changed the password. I tried changing from POP to IMAP. Nothing worked. I'd rather have POP but I have a feeling my settings are wrong. However, I can't find what they should be.

Hoping someone can help with this.

Many thanks,
Jane

At so far un-explainable times ( both when It is idle and when I am surfing and interacting with web pages ) T-bird will open and try to connect to my gmail account ( whichI have fortunately not given my password so its stuck at the password window) and if not closed or interacted with will continue periodically to open multiple instances of t-bird and its password request window to gmail. Sometimes twenty ormore instances at once. [ The last instance was while registering for this forum just after I typed in my email address ( possible co-incidence?)]

Attached are both the startup list and the process list from hijack this.

Any help figuring this one out will be appreciated I am stumped.

I seriously doubt this is a malware issue. It is more likely a setting you have in T-bird. If you want us to check for malware you need to do what Halo linked you to when he edited and approved your post.

I?m using mozilla thunderbird as my email client. Following gmails instructions on how to set up your gmail account through thunderbird, I typed in all the server names and ports and selected SSL and all that as they said. I am running the internet through a proxy so I have set up the proxy in thunderbird correctly as well. When I attempt to ?Get Mail,? a small message comes up saying ?Failed to connect to server pop.gmail.com? Before that it does say looking up pop.gmail.com down the bottom. What could possibly be wrong? I have also turned on POP in gmail settings as well.If you have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

In last Sunday's Observer there was an article about Gmail, explaining the many things that it includes.Confusingly for me, the screen, layout and controls were completely different from my version of Gmail.....which I thought was the only version! I have Gmail running through Thunderbird and I'm wondering if this is the reason it looks completely different. Although my emails work perfectly and always have, can anyone tell me why mine is so different?

I have 4 gmail and one ISP email accounts operating with Mozilla Thunderbird. I use my cell phone as a modem with GSM or 3G connection. I get totally confused with multiple messages - unable to send connection timed out, unable to send to sent folders. Mails in outbox can remain for days without my being able to send. Sometimes unable to save as draft. Result - I don't know whether messages have been sent or not. Sometimes lose messages completely. Read incoming messages may be recieved two or three times before being finally marked as read - even when I mark them as read!
The problems may be with our 'third world' connections but I believe that there are problems with Thunderbird. Has anyone had the same problem? More importantly, what is the solution - apart from going back to Outlook or handling each gmail account separately via google. Reluctant to do that since I only established multiple accounts because of Thunderbird's ability to use common boxes.

Been using Thunderbird with no probs for years - changed my password. Now Thunderbird will not work with it.It keeps saying that the new password is incorrect- but I know its correct as i've checked it online and on my phone.I am 100% certain the password is fine - but Thunderbird says no.Can anyone help with this It says Configuration could not be verified. Could the username or password be wrongthanks

Answer:Thunderbird mail - Gmail password won't work - why?

I had a similar problem. Delete the email address and re-add it as a new address. When you then put in the password, it will work. I am not sure what the problem is, but I had this on two systems and this fixed both. The first time was very frustrating and took a while before I decided that I had enough and was finally willing to try what I was sure would work but thought that it should be much easier just changing a setting ot trying again, and again, and again.... It was much easier to delete the email account and add it back again. There may be a few settings that you need to redo, but that is simple.Good luck. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Okay here is my dilemma.

I want to use my Gmail account in work. Now as you may not know websense blocks gmail coming through so what I have done is download Mozilla Thunderbird and set up Gmail as I have for accessing it at home.

However at this stage I cannot get my emails through as Websense stops it.

I believe there is a way whereby I can set up my account so that it will bounce off one server and get past websense..

Apparently it can be done as I have spoken to a few people about this, now these guys are people I have interviewed so would not be overly professional of me to begin asking them how I can do this.

Any help is appreciated Gentlemen.

Hello,Prior to closing my GMail account, I would like to be able to save every email in the account to an offline archive that will be stored on a hard drive or DVD. I would also like to be able to open this archive in future with an e-mail client, preferably Thunderbird.Despite thinking this would be straightforward, I've only managed to confuse myself by reading more. Help please!

Answer:GMail backup & restore - Thunderbird solution?

If you plan to use thunderbird then I would suggest the following: 1. Setup and install Thunderbird2. Setup GMAIL account with IMAP to sync all your mail to the thunderbird client3. Do a profile backup with MozBackup (http://kb.mozillazine.org/MozBackup)4. Rip that to CD/DVD/Flash driveIf you want something more universal for Outlook or others, use Gmail Backup (http://www.gmail-backup.com/). It can stream all of your mail (each email in .eml format) from your gmail inbox to your local PC, from there you can burn it. www.standby-it.com

I am collecting mail on my GMail account using Thunderbird and there is obviously a setting in GMail that I don't understand.

I have two addresses that GMail is aware of. We'll call them [email protected] and [email protected]. Obviously, the recovery e-mail address is just that, intended for use only when things go sideways and I might need to recover a lost password or something like that.

When people send mail to [email protected], I also get a duplicate of that same message at [email protected]. I am tired of having to delete all of those mails from [email protected]. They shouldn't be going there in the first place. How can I stop them from going there?

Within a few weeks I'd like to come up with a domain name and a long-term (lifetime?) email address. Call it [email protected] for illustration purposes. From what I've read, one of Gmail's strengths is its spam filter, so I'd like to route [email protected] mail through a Gmail account (call it [email protected] for the moment) so that it can be spam-filtered. I'll use the Web-based Gmail account when I am online, but I'd like to use an IMAP Thunderbird account when I'm offline, as well as an iPhone IMAP account on my iPhone.

The question is: Can I do all of this and have my Gmail account 'transparent'? In other words, I'd like to AVOID having the [email protected] address ever show, but rather have any reply mail or original mail from me go out under the [email protected] address. Actually, let me broaden that -- if I have other email accounts to route through Gmail, I'd like to have any replies go out with a return address that reflects the particular email account of mine to which it was sent.

If there is a better configuration, I'm open to it. But at the present it appears that the best combination is a personal email address routed through a transparent Gmail account, with Thunderbird for off-line use.

Can this be done while keeping the Gmail account transparent?? Is there a better configuration than what I've suggested? For what it's worth, I'm a private party, not a ... Read more

Answer:What's the perfect email configuration with Gmail, Thunderbird, iPhone etc.

You can do this, just have all the email that you receive to the [email protected] email address forwarded to your [email protected] email address.

Then on Thunderbird add both [email protected] and [email protected], then you receive all your email filtered into your Google inbox and when you send an email you select [email protected] as your email address to send with.

This makes your Gmail account 'transparent'.

I have Mozilla Thunderbird, which I use for AOL, GMAIL and my university's email account and today it started that when I open Thunderbird, AOL with automatically open as well.

Also, in some of my emails they are "multi-part MIME" and I think blocking html from working. I am not sure since I don't know too much. IN Thunderbird I can no longer click on the links in the emails.

I use GMAIL in Thunderbird but the messages on the servers website and in Thunderbird don't match, as in if I delete in Thunderbird it is still there on the website's server. I am not sure if this is normal but GMAIL puts every email I write in my inbox both in Thunderbird and the server. Also, I have read you can use hotmail with Thunderbird but have made several unsuccessful attempts to integrate the two.

I run Windows XP home edition service pack 2. It is a SONY VAIO laptop about 1 year and 3 months old. It is very slow and freezes often where crt+alt+del do not work.

Hi,
I have a HDD that crashed recently and I need to pull my old email messages off the old hard drive (currently rigged as a slave drive, Vista is the OS) and put them on the new one.
I want to use Thunderbird on the new machine (as that's what I used before) can someone please give me an idiots guide on how to do this from start to finish?

Answer:ThunderBird Emails...

Thunderbird stores profiles the same way Firefox does.

Navigate to the following address on the slave drive:

Users\yourName\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles

Drag the profile folder (it's in the form of "xxxxxxxx.default", where xxxxxxxx is random numbers and letters) from the slave drive to the same location on the host drive. Your profile (and presumably all your emails) will now be on the host OS. I've done it with Firefox profiles before, but I assume it works the same way with Thunderbird. I checked Thunderbird on my netbook, and inside my profile folder (if you go deep enough) there is a small file named "Inbox" (I only have 2 emails in my inbox because I only used the program once).

Let me know if this works for you.

I have used Thunderbird for some time and had >4000 emails in the inbox. The program has been struggling recently, frequently showing a 'Not responding' message. Today after apparently compacting my emails the inbox is now completely empty so I have lost all my stored emails, though some remain in the Sent emails folder. There is nothing in the Archived emails folder. Fresh emails are received as normal but I would like to retrieve the previously received emails. Are they stored in a file on my hard drive somewhere? I have three gmail accounts that I access in Thunderbird. They all receive emails perfectly, but the issue is when I reply or send email from these accounts. (I've listed my SMTP settings after each).

Account One: [email protected] (this is a work email, and it sends and receives perfectly) SMTP.gmail.com

Account Two: [email protected] (this sends and receives perfectly) sMtp.gmail.com

Account Three: [email protected] (this receives perfectly, but when I reply it shows as being sent by [email protected]) smtp.gmail.com

Any idea how I can fix this? I want to get it set up correctly on my computer and then I will do the same on my iPhone.

Thanks in advance!

(By the way, I'm running Vista, Thunderbird 3.1.12

Answer:Solved: SMTP issue with multiple gmail accounts in Thunderbird

You'll need to set up an SMTP server for each account.
It sounds like you're sending using the personal accounts server.
Tools>Accounts>Outgoing server(SMTP).
On the right click Add, type a unique description for the business account, the username for the business account (which should be different from your personal) and check the "use password".
Once the server is set, click the Business account in the left pane.
In the right pane, set the "Outgoing Server" drop list to the newly created SMTP server and click OK.
When you send a mail from that account the first time, you should be asked for the username and password. Check the box to have it remembered.
On the compose window you'll have a drop down on the From line that will list what account you wish to send the message from. It should automatically be the account you're sending from, but if you use the global inbox instead of separate account inboxes, you may have to select it.

I uninstalled an older version of Thunderbird and installed the latest. That was a big mistake. Now all email comes in in what I would describe, as "source code". The right scroll bar is missing so I can't scroll down and the pages start with items like x-Account key; X-UIDL; X-MOzilla status, etc. etc. I uninstalled Thunderbird and went back to the older version but it is also affected. My company just switched to at&t dsl. I have always used Mozilla Thunderbird without a problem. Since the switch I can receive but cannot send any emails (ymail.com or charter.net acounts) through thunderbird. When I try this is the message I receive....The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.charter.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:ThunderBird will not send emails

Did the POP and SMTP server names remain the same with the changeover? I would expect that smtp.charter.net might have been the prior ISP? Many ISPs do not allow use of their SMTP servers without validation to prevent them from being used as SPAM vehicals. You will either need to validate to charter or use the AT&T outgoing (SMTP) server. If that is the AT&T SMTP server, try using port 587 rather than port 25.

Your company's IT folks should be able to assist you.

I've had Thunderbird two months now. Everything is going well until I switch on one day and all the emails that have been downloaded previous are corrupt. I can't see the content, they are either blank of have thousands of random letters. The only thing I can do is delete the emails. It has now happened twice in two months. Can anybody offer any advice? Thanks.

Answer:Thunderbird corrupting emails

How recently have you compacted your folders? Compacting is something that needs to be done regularly in any email program. We recommend weekly, but many of us do it daily. When done often enough, it can be an extremely fast process. Not doing so can lead to problems like those you are experiencing. See this about how to and why it's so important: Compacting folders - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

To avoid this happening again, see the tips in these articles:

Hello
I recently opened Thunderbird and I was forced to create a new account via the wizard option. This had meant that I lost all my emails.
After reading several help options on Thunderbird I understand that my emails and profile are on my system but I am really confused how to get everything back. I know it is possible but I need it explained in layman terms. Can anybody help me with this.

Thanks in advance

Paul

Answer:Lost Emails in Thunderbird

Hello woodman,I've had this same experience some time ago, but now I know a lot more. Thunderbird creates a Profile folder and in it is a mail folder. What I'm not too certain about at this moment is if by creating your new account that you also created a new profile folder. That has likely happened. Whether or no, I'd suggest opening your current Thunderbird account and under both local folders and the main account area create one folder each with an odd name. Here's an image of this accomplished in Local Folders:This is strictly for identification purposes so you know you've got the right folders. I'd choose something near the top of the alphabet.Aardvark and AARP come to mind.Once you have done that, close Thunderbird. Now, here's where you get to navigate. My computer ==> Local Disk ==> Documents and Settings ==> Your user name on the computer (woodman?) ==> Application Data ==> Thunderbird ==> Profiles ==> MailIf you see more than one profile, open that profile and keep that window open, then do the navigation over again and open the OTHER profile. Resize your windows so that they are either side-by-side or one above and one below. Now, in each window, open the Mail folder. Inside that folder in each window, you will see a folder labeled Local Folders and a folder with your account name. In One window, open the Local folder. See if your odd named folder is in it. If it is, then you have your new account. If it isn't go back to the previous f... Read more

I have some saved emails on my hard drive (.eml file type). Despite having set Thunderbird as my default mail client, Outlook Express still opens these messages. I have used the 'Open with' option to change the selected program from OE to Thunderbird, but when I double click on the file nothing happens. This occurs for both emails saved in OE and since using Thunderbird. Does anyone have any idea how to get Thunderbird to open these files?

Answer:Thunderbird and saved emails

With Thunderbird version 1, File - Open Saved Message will let you read .eml files.
