I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Sony Vaio Wi-Fi Connection problem

More info required please - What is the OS; have you Updated drivers or anything recently?
Possibly a simple visit to Device Manager would fix it.
First of all find the Wifi Network Adapter and uninstall it. Restart the laptop and let it reinstall the Adapter and see if this solves the issue.
If not then select the Adapter properties and update the Driver.
If still no good, visit the Sony Website and download the latest driver for your OS.

the computer is a Sony Vaio and operates on windows Vista.we use satt internet with a wireless router.  The computer has been updated on virus issues and will connect to the net fine most of the time. but after being idol for a while the net will loose connection yet the wireless card is pickiing up router and there is no issues with the actual satt connection.  Normally I have to restart the computer and the connection comes back with no problems.  Though alot of the times the laptop will not fully restart.  It goes to a screen saying "computer restarting" and will just sit there and never restart.. I have to turn the power off and back on. Then the operating system comes to the black screen and asks if i want to start in normal mode or safe mode.  I click normal mode and it starts back up fine until the net locks up again.. It usually runs fine as long as i dont sit idle long enough for the screen saver to come up.  Any help on the issue is would be appreciated.geeray

1. Just bought a Sony VAIO TT series and was trying to get logged on to the MacDonalds (Cloud?) wifi. It took ages to go through the leaflet they provide and then I got the message network not available. I had to do all the steps manually there was no "wizard" or automatic connection. First time I've ever tried this.

When entering a wifi hotspot should the wireless network appear in Manage Wireless Networks? This certainly didn't happen in MacDonalds. My wireless switch on the laptop is turned to "on" but how do I know if it's working. It seems ridiculously difficult to find a wifi connection. Am I doing something wrong? Does each hotspot need this complicated manual configuration?

The laptop works fine at home with a router and i also have a broadband "3" mobile dongle which connects fine.

2. Also getting message "Windows Media Player has stopped working". Why? How can I fix this.

The laptop is brand new by the way.

Any help much appreciated. Advice in idiot format please for a non IT/PC beginner, thanks.

I decided to share some of my recent blog post that are related to computers, as I normally blog about business related content. This seemed to be a very popular topic and I experienced the same issues so decided to play around a bit.

The problem I had can occur a few different ways:

1) I experienced that if I put the computer to sleep (close the lid) that when I went to wake it up, the wireless would act as if the switch was turned off, even though it was on.

2) I experienced that sometimes the computer just wouldn't recognize the wireless unless I rebooted a few times. Even then sometimes the wireless switch would show it was off.

3) I experienced that sometimes it would work perfectly fine when I first booted the computer, but then would lose connection after a period of time.

I believe that this issue is with the pre-installed software loaded by Sony. I read many blogs, tech sites, and articles about this but none of them seemed to work. Then I remembered that when I first got the laptop, I had disabled some of the pre-loaded crap that you get when purchase a computer from a store (that's for another blog entry though).

Solution:

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> double click "Vaio Control Center" -> hit ok at the UAC prompt (if there) -> expand the folder "network connections" -> click "Vaio Smart Network" -> click Open

A box should have popped up with 3 little boxes/images in it. H... Read more

Hello all.
This one has me stumped. Recently reformatted this Sony laptop and all went well. The unit has all the up to date drivers, including the LAN. It is using LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Driver with updates to Marvell® Atheros® Extensible Wireless LAN Driver.
Both of these installed, but I had to do in compatibility mode for Windows XP. Not sure why. Tried it with normal installation and each time I received the warning "software might not have installed properly". After I did this I thought that if the drivers did not install properly that something would be messed up. Hence another reformat.
Getting to the problem (after proper install of the drivers). The unit will not connect to the internet.
I have browsed through the forums here and there are many similar cases but not exact. I have tried all the suggestions made on other forums but to no avail.
The unit sees the router.. tries to identify, stumbles around a bit and then declares it an unknown network.
It marks it as a "public" network, and connects locally only. Trouble shooting included trying all the different security settings on the router and the laptop, tried reassigning IP addresses. Put the laptop in DMZ zone, shut off UPnP, restored UPnP, ect, ect.
Then tried an open system with no security protocol ...... BAM connects to the internet.
This is obviously no good. I am running a Belkin wireless N router. There are 17 wireless devices that connect to this router with n... Read more

Hi all, I own a Sony Vaio VPCCW computer, Windows 7 64 bit home edition. My laptop has an Atheros AR9285 wireless adapter which I have updated the drivers for recently, I believe. I'm at a university that has multiple access points to their wireless network, so I DO NOT have login access to my router. Upon connecting to the wireless network and opening a web browser, I'm supposed to be redirected to a little submission form page where I enter a university username and password so I can have access to the internet.

Lately, I have been connecting to the wifi network and I have not been redirected to the login page, instead I get a "page not found" type error in chrome, firefox, IE, etc. I should note that when I am experiencing these troubles, PCs and Macs that are in the same room as my laptop do not have an issue connecting at all. This problem occurs very randomly, and it fixes itself after about 20 minutes. It would be very annoying to not have internet when I need it, however. I have read up a bit about similar errors on this forum and so I know that whoever reads this will probably ask for a Xirrus screenshot, so I have attached that. Unfortunately right now I am connected just fine, so I didn't get the chance to grab an ipconfig text for pasting here. I'll try restarting my laptop to force the problem, and I'll edit it in/reply if I can get it to work.

My network is "webster-wifi"

Thanks for looking into my problem!

My Sony Vaio seems to not like connecting to wireless internet anymore, and when I click on the available connections, it shows the ethernet cord as a wireless connection (but it works). There is no recognition from my computer that it is plugged in to a ethernet cord.

I have tried a system restore to 2 weeks before this all happened, and it didn't work. I'm not sure what to do, I know it's a problem with my computer because other people can connect to the ethernet cord and the wireless, just not me.

Any ideas?

Answer:Sony Vaio thinks ethernet cable is a wireless connection

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router via the ethernet cable, , Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Repeat this with the pc connected to the router via wireless (disconnect the ethernet cable )

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get a... Read more

Hi all,

I was wondering whether you could help, ever since I bought my custom built Sony Vaio Duo 13 SVD1321C5E Hybrid Laptop back in July/August 2013 I keep on experiencing intermittent connection issues where the connection keeps on dropping
when browsing the Internet, remotely accessing the network at work using Remote Desktop and downloading files in which I have to keep on switching between our broadband connection as well as my 4G connection in order to temporarily fix
the problem as well as switching between the dongle Sony provided to me when I complained back in 2013 with again switching between our broadband connection as well as my 4G connection in order to temporarily fix the problem.
I'm now at a point where I am so tempted to reinstall the laptop using a fresh of copy of Windows 8 Pro as it came with this OS to begin with in which it has now been upgraded to Windows 8.1 with the latest Sony drivers, I did upgrade to Windows

Showed this to Geeksquad agent at Bestbuy and he told me that this could be a motherboard problem and nothing much can be done about it.

Hello all,

I just acquired a Sony Vaio PCG-F520 saptop from a friend. It's nothing great at all (PIII 500, 64MB Ram) but it would be nice for using the internet on my couch. The reason he gave it to me was that the screen doesn't work. The neons come on but there is no picture. I've gotten a picture for a split second while moving the screen around, but haven't been able to do it again. The picture works when connected to an external monitor. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Video driver and many old drivers.

1-remove and replace video driver
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.
2-update drivers list
How To Find Drivers:

Quote:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer o... Read more

Hi. My USB won't open. My laptop doesn't read it. I;ve tried to use it with another computer but its the same. I can't get my files. What should I do?

Answer:Sony Vaio USB problem

This is an entire area of specilization. You might want to do a gurgle search for help.
Rescue of USB flash drive files is not for the weak of heart.

There are so many causes. Failure could result from something as simple as pulling out a flash drive too early while it is still recording or downloading files, or it could be damage to the hardware around the USB plug.

Rescue is rare, so if the data is critical, get the help of an expert... Most repairs require the destruction of existing data on the flash drive. So do not do anything more until you do some research. Some brands, such as SanDisk and no-name units are particularly susceptible.
While other brands will rescue the data if you mail them the drive.

Some companies specialize in rescue of the data, but they usually remove the memory element, which means they destroy the drive in order to save the data.

Hello,

I'm trying to install a toshiba MK4018GAP 40GB hard drive into this little machine. THe bios is updated and the bios always posts the HD as
65535MB or C/H/S 22272; 15; 63 (10776MB)
I enter C/H/S as; 16383; 16; 63 (8455MB)

ONE IMPORTANT FACT: I do not have the CDROM for this machine. I have the floppy though.
I've tried Partition magic8, BootBG, MBRtool, another words, I have about 45 disks piled infront of me and nothing seems to get this to boot into anything or save a proper MBR.

It partitions and runds absolutely fine (of course) n my desktop PC with an adaptor and then POOF!, nothing when it goes back into the notebook. I understand that WINxpSp2 hates the HD shuffle from machine to machine, but that is certianly not the issue here.

Toshiba took the drive back at the drive service center and sent it back cleared for take off saying there was nothing wrong.
I do notice when I use the windows MMC snap on for hard drive management that it puts the LBA equivelants in brackets as a note for me.) Still the note book refuses to see the drive or any partitions I've added.

Can anyone please boil this down for me? I'm nuts over it and about to send the HD for a swim in the ocean here in South Miami Beach. The time I've soent certianly outways just buying another drive. But it seems a senseless waste to do that. The original drive. IBM Travelstar 6.49 GB died on the previous owner.

Thanks folks,

Feeling crazy in SOBE.

I never got this wizard and when I go to upload my film onto the computer using DV gate, it says that the i.link (Sony?s brand name for dv) is offline. It?s not but it?s as if the computer doesn?t know that the camcorder is connected. Is there anyway of making it go from Offline to Online and making the two things ?talk? to each other. If not, is there anything else I can do/get in order to upload my film on to my laptop for editing. All advice and help welcome and appreciated.Richard

Answer:DV problem with Sony Vaio

I was advised elsewhere:"If you open Device Manager (Start > Run type devmgmt.msc > OK) on the Sony what does it show against the DV port (Windows might call it Firewire or IEEE 1394)? Or is it even listed? If it is listed but the icon has a yellow ! over it then there is a problem, which would explain why the camera isn't recognised. If it isn't listed then it may be disabled in the BIOS."I've done as suggested and I have 2 controllers listed in a drop down menuThe first: OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller has the yellow ! as descibed above. The second: Sony CDX3222 OHCI i.LINK (IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller doesn't have anything. What does this mean? Is there something wrong and can it be fixed? If not, can I get something to work around the problem?

we are having a problem with a sony vaio pcg f270 laptop. when we plug in a optical or regular external mouse with the computer shut off, and then power up the computer here is what happens. the second we move the external mouse multiple programs open and continue opening until we force the computer to shut down. if we power up the computer and plug the external mouse in it works as well as the touchpad mouse at the same time. is this normal? do we just have to remember to power up the machine first before we hook up the external mouse? we are using windows 98se. thank you , paul

Question: Sony Vaio Problem

Hello! I would first like to say that I do not know if i am posting this in the right area =/ Anyway back to subject. I have recently discovered a new problem with my Sony Vaio F series. The Gaming Bundle of course, due to the blu-ray player and all. Anyway, the problem is, i never had this problem while not watching a video but when i am it makes these weird sounds and then crashes. After the crash it boots up again and informs me that it had a "unexpected" shutdown. If you click the more detail it says blue screen. But I never saw a blue screen all i see is a frozen frame of the youtube video. If i click search for solution the box just disappears and does nothing.

Answer:Sony Vaio Problem

You can right click on Computer and select Properties. On the page that comes up select Advanced system settings on the left side. Click on the Advanced tab and Settings button for Startup and Recovery. In the new box tick the Write an event to the system log and untick the box to Automaticaslly restart. Click OK and Apply and OK on the next box when the last one closes. When it happens again you will be able to see the bsod so you can write it down and also and event log.

Question: Sony VAIO Problem

Hey, i boot it up and it goes to the Sony screen then it just freezes. I try and boot to bios and it says Entering Setup then freezes, any ideas?

Answer:Sony VAIO Problem

It could be hanging due to a bad device that BIOS no longer recognized. You could unplug any unnecessary devices and leave only the harddrive, ram and video card and see if it still hangs.

Hi I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV26 with a LCD problem. When I start it the screen is on for about 2 seconds, with a red tint to it. Then it will turn off. The boot cycle continues. If I close it and then open it, it will again turn on but only for a second. When I plug in a second monitor it will show the desktop with no problems. I think the wires could be messed up because if the hinge. But before I open it up I wanted to get someone elses opinion.
Thanks
PS I looked at prices for a replacement LCD and they were all over 400!!! Does anyine one know where I can get one cheaper?

Sorry, wasn't sure exactly what section this problem belonged in, so i'm posting here.

I'm using my sister's Sony Vaio laptop that i decided to downgrade from vista home premium to windows XP. The first thing i should have done should've been to get all the hardware information while on vista.... but i completely forgot. I backed up my general files but not the hardware information.

Now I'm stuck with a brand new installation of windows XP and no internet because XP isn't recognizing my NIC.

I've been googling around for some hours now with nothing.

I've gone to all the main "official" Vaio Sony sites. They all ask for model or product, but for some reason my model doesn't come up anywhere i check. There is also another option to type down your serial and product key which is a 15 digit number. Whereas the first 7 digits are the serial and the 8 other digits the product key. Still it doesn't seem to be a model of any sort... No site recognizes this Vaio model for some odd reason.

Model : PCG-5K1L.

I installed service pack 3, i thought it would at least be able to detect a network card, but to no avail it couldn't.

Everest home edition has no more luck detecting.

In hardware manager the only thing detected was the 1394 firewire port.

This laptop, from what my sister said, came with no manual or other useful information; meaning none.

I'm really stumped on what else I could do. I was thinking i... Read more

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FS660/W and have a problem with the CD/DVD unit. Recently the computer was full of viruses and I had to re-install the OS, it has Win XP Pro. I lost my system restore CD's, so I had to search for a copy of these CD's and got a copy from a friend. Since the re-installation, the problem began: It only reads original CD's. When I load a burnt CD or DVD, it shows a single windows media player file, with a size of 0 bytes, no matter what is the actual content of the CD or DVD. Before the re-installation it read everything fine. Now, for example I have a burnt CD with a copy of some drivers and can't open it because of this issue. What could be the reason of this problem? A mis-installed driver, or a patch for the OS to read burnt CD's?

Please tell me that you burnt off your windows vista recovery media before blowing every thing away.

The problem with Sony is that they do not put drivers up on their website. So if you happen to
1. Loose your recovery disk
2. Have a hard drive crash and not burn off your recovery media
3. Roll back from Windows Vista to Xp
then you are up the creek with out a paddle.

I have a sony vaio PCG-K415B which was running well, right up to the point i upgraded it from windows xp to vista. I have loaded all the drivers and it says the drive is working normally, however it does not read any disc inserted.

If i put a disk in the light on the drive flashes yellow briefly. If i open explorer and click on the DVD drive it opens the drawer and asks for a disk to be inserted. I know it worked before the upgrade as it loaded vista from a disc and now it won't read that same disc.

Any ideas ?

Hi Guys,
I have a Sony Vaio laptop model VGN-FJ1Z/W with a 14.1inch widescreen bought from PC World in January this year. The problem is several fuzzy white lines running across the top of the screen. The first is about an inch down from the top and is quite a distinct line with a sort of fuzzy white running upwards about 1cm. The second line is approx 1cm below this and is again a distinct white line. I have only noticed this because the screen background has been white up until I changed it the other day. If I set the desktop to none and change the colour to black or red for example I can't see the lines for some reason. If I choose brown or grey as a background colour they show up quite a lot. Do you think the screen on this laptop is faulty? As I say it only becomes noticeable when the background is showing particular colours so I can live with it but I'm concerned that it may be a problem which needs sorting whilst the computer is under warranty. If I open a window minimised with the same colour of background, say grey, and click on this window and move it up towards the top of the screen the lines do not disappear behind it but show in front of it if that is any help.

Hey everyone,
I think I've done something to my laptop that is causing it to almost crash.

About a week ago, several of the keys on my keyboard popped off and I wasn't able to get them back on. So, I ordered a replacement keyboard and it came yesterday. I followed an online guide to replace it by first removing the plastic strip above the top of the laptop, then unscrewing four connecting screws, and finally sliding out the keyboard's ribbon from a clamp. I replaced the new keyboard and reattached. Things worked fine.

Today, I installed a new CD-RW/DVD drive. I think this is where the problems started. I unscrewed the entire back of the unit, including the RAM door and what I gather was the HD. Once all removed, I removed the old cd drive and installed the new one. The HD has four screws connecting it to the base, and has a pin-attachment.

After all this was done, I restarted and a couple of things happened. First I got an error message before windows even loaded saying "lsass.exe error .. unable to open" .. then the computer restarted.

windows loaded successfully this time, but I have a new hardward wizard requesting permission to install ACPI Uniprocessor PC. It says it doesn't pass windows logo testing. What is this all about? Did I reconnect the HD improperly? Does anyone know what the lsass.exe error is all about? Oh, between rebooting and successfully starting, I received another error saying my virtual memory was low and the... Read more

I recently restored my vaio to factory settings using vaio recovery settings but I still had some issues with the computer so I decided to restore again. The first stage including restoring vista and starting it for the first time went fine. However this time the second stage involving installation of factory softwares hung at 96%.I waited for over 4 hrs but in vain.
So I used task manager to exit this stage and windows started normally but few factory softwares were missing mainly vaio recovery center.
I again restored the system using F10 key but to same result. It hung at 96% once again.
Vista works fine all drivers are installed but the only problem is that I dont have some of the original softwares.
is there any way to access the hidden recovery partition so that I can have those softwares back.

Hello!

I brought a new Sony Vaio VPCEH and as I am never comfortable with company installed OS, the first thing I did was to format the system and install Win 7 Ultimate x64. After the installation, I am not able to use the Function keys, the ones thats used in combination with the Function key, like to increase or decrease brightness etc.. I haven't installed any Sony software's. Is it a must to install some of the sony software's to make them work and if yes, which software do I need to install?

Moreover, I downloaded every driver from the Sony website and installed them but my monitor still shows a Generic PnP monitor. Do I need any specific drivers for this and how can I change the color profile of my laptop as the colors are not accurate.

Please help.

Thank you.

Answer:Problem with Sony Vaio VPCEH

Next time you better not reformat the OS ... better just go to Uninstall whatever software you don't want in there... yes you need Sony software to work on the Key Control..

Hey all,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR354 (pink!) and since it blue screened on me a few months ago I've not been able to use the webcam at all (camera model is VGP-VCC6).

I have reinstalled all the drivers for the camera and it works when I test it (with Fwink) i.e. the little green light beside the camera itself comes on...but I don't get anything but a black screen. Have also tried with Skype and Messenger Live and get the same black screen. After reading about loads and loads of people who have the same problem it seems that I actually need the software for the camera, not the drivers.

So, this is my question; where on earth would I go about getting the software from? I didn't have a disc of software with my laptop when I bought it and prior to the blue screen 'incident' I had never backed up (I know, I know I've learned my lesson...the hard way!)

Would love any help you could give me because I've seriously spent weeks on this and it's doing me in!

Cheers,
Zoe

I am trying to fix my mother's laptop computer, which is a Sony VAIO PCG-9B5L. When powered on, the display shows "Operating System Not Found". I know that this problem can quickly be resolved by using the Recovery Discs that came with the PC. The only problem is: My mother lost disc one; I have Recovery Discs 2 and 3, but 1 is nowhere to be found. Is there any place that I could do to online to find the files to burn to a CD to use as the first CD to fix the PC? Is this even a possibility?

Thanks for any advice provided.

Answer:Sony VAIO PCG-9B5L Problem

You can call Sony and order a new CD, I thinks thats about it if you want to have all the same software on the laptop as it had before. Now thats if the hard drive is fine, which it may not be.

Hello,
My lap top has been 'broken' for a long time now. There is a switch at the top which allows user to swtich between stamina and speed modes. I do not know what they mean, but i do know it shoulc be on speed, like it was originaly. on my laptop i am no longer able to switch to speed mode, because everytime I do that i am unable to read the screen, everything is covered in strange lines and fuzziness.
After speaking to some poeple who know about computers, such as the vaio experts, it has been concluded that the problem is with the video card.
I have tried many different solutions to try and fix it, but nothing works....
I dont want to send it to Vaio to be fixed as its very expensive and i need to lap top with me. (which works fine in the stamina mode by the way, i am guessing all i am missing is the graphics).
Can anyone help me with this do you think?
I appreciate your help in advance ))))

Hi people, this is my first thread here, I hope I can get some help.

A friend of mine gave me a Sony Vaio laptop, the model is "vgn ar590fg" like this one
http://www.clasificados.net/files/item_34410.jpg

I had to get it repared because it had one of the hinges was broken, suposedly that was causing a video issue, because the screen would only show color lines...

I recovered the laptop after a year and obviously got my money back from those scammers, gave it to a good technician who told me that the video chip had gotten loose, so he reattached it again and the computer worked fine for about two weeks, the chip got detached again, he fixed it again, and after two weeks it got detached...

He told me that the laptop has an overheating problem and that the chip gets detached from the motherboard due to the overheating, he told me that I need a new motherboard, and to be honest I can't aford to get it because nobody sells it here in venezuela and I don't have dollars to buy it on Ebay...

Does anyone have another solution? Is there another way of fixing it so the laptop would at least last for some years? I really like the laptop and I can work in my designs perfectly with it, besids I can play my games there...

Thanks for the help !!!!!

Have a nice Day

Hey,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z which I bought a couple of years ago. Three nights back I was browsing the net when the screen went funny (see attached pictures).

I'm out of warranty, but called the Vaio helpline the next day who suggested we try to reinstall the graphics drivers. That didn't solve the problem.

So their next suggestion was to wipe the C: Drive back to its factory state using Vaio Recovery Centre. This wasn't possible because some of the 'Next' and 'Start' buttons you would normally click on were off the display boundaries of the screen.

So, he then jumped to the conclusion that it must be the graphics card - presumably wiping the C: Drive was to check this (?)

Anyway... they quoted me for a repair as:

£57.58 to collect my laptop, take it away and diagnose it
+
£36.00 Labour costs if I did ultimately want them to carry out the repair
+
£100-£150 for a replacement Graphics Card

Seeing as I paid £600 for the laptop, brand new, 2 years ago this didn't exactly strike me as value.

Do they seem right in their diagnosis? Is there anything I should try? Are there cheaper options for getting it repaired?

Many thanks if you're sparing the time to help, I've included the full system info below.

Does anyone here have any idea how to take apart a Sony Vaio notebook (specifically a pcgfrv31)? I finally got a new keyboard, and it seems that you have to take apart the case to be able to replace it. Problem is, I've taken out every concievable screw on the chassis (including the two underneath the battery bay, the one underneath the ram chip, and the six beneath the hard drive caddy) - and the stupid thing still won't come apart.

Either that, or if anyone here wants to buy a used Sony Vaio PCGFRV31 2.4 Ghz laptop (no hdd - I have to keep that for myself since I already replaced the one that came from the factory; 2 PCMCIA slots, 3 USB ports, VGA port, LPT printer port, 56k modem, 1 Ethernet LAN port, CDRW/DVD Rom combo drive, optional floppy drive bay (I just found that yesterday!!!), Sony memory stick formatter, DVD recovery kit (purchased from Sony)). I'd throw in the keyboard (brand new from Sony - the one that's on there from factory has a dysfunctional number 4 key) and a second hood assembly (Sony sent me the wrong part, I never bothered to return it) and a copy of Windows XP Pro upgrade for a good price. It's got obvious scratches on the top and bottom of the case - mostly from my 1 year old son, some from me trying to get the silly thing apart. I've been running it for two years without a hitch other than the first hard drive quitting on me - that was an easy fix, just bought a new one and kept going. No problems on the install there... However, I now have another problem: the battery meter reads plugged in, not charging at 52%. Is the battery really not charging or is this because of the utility program I shut off?

would you post back the tests below - ipconfig /all, Ping and Xirrus

Do you have a firewall on the PC - if so try to disable that
Do you have wireless security enabled on the router - i would remove the security and see it now works ok
Does any other machine work OK with the wireless ?

It's a couple of years old, I turned it on the other day and it says upon loading "setup is preparing your computer for first use" it then doesn't ask me to log in it just goes straight to welcome. When it loads a black screen appears with an error message which reads "windows could not complete the installation to install windows to this computer please restart the installation" it then just restarts and does the exact same thing again.

Thanks for reading any advice will be appreciated.

Well why dont you try popping in a windows 7 cd inside and use the "repair" function when it detects your windows.

I have installed windows vista ultimate x64 on my vaio and am having some trouble with some drivers and utilities that come installed on it when it was purchased it seems that the function keys do not work anymore (eject button,s1,s2,av buttons on top of keyboard and fn f5 ecc for brightness control, zoom ecc I have been researching a lot to solve my problem but cannot find anything even on the sony support page they do not have the utilities that i need for my vaio pls help me solve this

Answer:Sony vaio vgn-ar71m problem

Sony may not entirely support Vista 64 Bit. Have you checked into that? It's highly possible that the quickkeys that you're referring to function through a program that doesn't work with Vista 64. Also look into bios flashes for upgraded 64 bit support for your model computer.

How old is this Sony?

Hi everyone ! I recently purchased the sony vaio z series. The specs I got were the i5, 6gb RAM 128 SSD 1600 res lcd and optical drive. The non optional gpu was nvidia 330m. I was initially very satisfied with this machine. The power/weight ratio is crazy. CoD 4 ran almost at full setings and WoW ran well at near-high.

When I tried youtube-ing a song or two I noticed that the speakers were of very poor quality. My SE W995 walkman phone gives a better quality and more powerful sound output. Even my 300 $ acer netbook has better speakers. I understand that sony tried to fit in as much as possible in a very small machine but this was unacceptable. I tried everything from mp3 to youtube to original live concert dvds and anywhere above 50% volume the sound 'broke' just like with very old speakers. I went back to the shop and noticed there was a problem with the whole line. I was very disappointed and had to claim a full refund.

Its such a shame, cause I really loved the laptop. Does the i7 line have the same problem ? I am surprised that I didn't run into this problem when I did my research of the sony vaio. All reviews were excellent and only a few made a comment regarding sub-par speakers. I couldn't have imagined its this bad. Did anyone else notice this problem on the z series ?

Answer:Sony Vaio Z - sound problem

It's not based on model nor CPU. Laptop speakers are not top notch. Same for built in speakers on an LCD (not TVs). They do so to keep the cost low. You could have just used external speakers.

Hi,

I installed win 7 x86 on a sony vaio vpceb36fg. The video card has its correct driver. But my problem is the recommended resolution is 1920x1080 but it is very tiny. I need to focus on every thing by my eyes to see them. And when I pull the resolution down the screen is not obvious and also is not fitted to the LED of laptop.
How to solve this problem pleaase?

Answer:Sony vaio resolution problem

Have you tried going into the control panel. Under The Display Icon. There should be a way there. To adjust your text size. Without changing the resolution.

I have a sony vaio pcg-k13 that I need to replace a keyboard on. I already have the keyboard, but i'm not sure how the keyboard hood removes. I can't find any screws on the bottom of the unit that I think would be for the hood...does it just pop off? Please help! I don't want to make things worse..

Answer:Sony Vaio PCG-K13 keyboard problem

I too have a Sony K series laptop and wish to get inside in order to get get all the dust out - I assume this is the reason for steadily increasing fan noise over the past year. I've undone all the screws with arrows, and the top plastics come loose however there appears to be soemthing holding it in place in the centre. I expect you have experienced this. I too cannot see any screws for the keyboard hood, and whilst it does feel loose, there are indentations on the keyboard side which
I suspect you are expected to use to prise it off. But is it a question of brute force? I do not want to be the one to find out and risk breaking anything! I have taken a few keys off the keyboard to try and find a screw; however it was in vein, there are no screws where it appears to be held in place.

Do you think unsticking the rubber pads at the four corners of the screen, which I strongly suspect will yeild screws to take the plastics of the screen apart, will help?

Please let me know if you have any progress in this matter.

Hi, I'm new.. etc..

I'm the process of trying to fix a Sony Vaio PCG-FX105K, running Windows 2000.
Amongst other things, the battery doesnt seem to charge.. the diagnostic (which I assume is Sony's own) reports the battery is 0% charged, and will require 7½ hours to charge..
Only other redeeming feature, is that the battery light flashes twice every couple of seconds..

Any pointers would be appriciated

Answer:Sony Vaio battery problem

Hi :0

7 1/2 hours for charging indicates that the system must think that the battery needs a full charge, which could indocate a number of things

the battery charging transformer that is connected to the power supply is maybe not working properly

the connection to the battery are disconnected or connected wrong (check that the ground wire and hot lead are correct

the battery is not good and connot be charged any more ( you can check this with another battery)

one thing you can do is use a multi-tester meter to check the input (charging leads) to the battery .. this way you can see if the voltage is getting to the battery

if yes, then replace battery

if no, replace the connection to the battery
that is all I can suggest with the information given

good luck

I have searched the forum and cannot find a reference to this problem....any help appreciated:
1. SONY VAIO VGN-FE790G with Windows XP Home. Ran A-OK until recently.
2. PC powers on and boots up normally with AC only. (battery removed)
3. PC powers on boots up normally with charged battery only. (AC removed)
4. PC will not power up with both AC and Battery connected, however battery led flashed rapidly as though it is charging.
5. Have tried different battery, different AC, and removed all SONY management software.
6. Updated the BIOS
7. Windows Power Meter recognizes battery, but gives "remaining unavailable" status.

I am assuming this is somehow related to the battery or the power management hardware in the PC. I understand there is a Power Board attached to the Motherboard. Could this be causing the symptoms I have?

I originally bought my Sony Vaio computer (Model#: VGN-NR285E) at Fry's with a 2 year warranty, and at the time I was told that the warranty would cover anything and everything short of throwing it on the floor and squirting it with a super soaker. I took it to Fry's a week ago and they told me any software failure, viruses, spyware/malware, and things relating to such and etc were not covered by the warranty. They then told me it would cost me 70$ to run a diagnostic on it, and if there was something wrong it would cost another 60$ to repair it. That's not including the amount of money it would cost to have them back up files that I may have wanted. When I was there; I explained to the tech that I did not receive a Windows Vista Start Up disc with my laptop when I purchased it back in late August of '08. He then proceeded to tell me that if that was the case; the computer should have it inside the hard drive. Now I just didn't understand what he meant by that, but he told me to take it home, press F10, and run system recovery. I'm now at home and my computer is asking me for a Vista Start Up Disc.

I'm not exactly a technician, but I'm pretty sure that when I can't even run my laptop in safe mode; there's something wrong. My computer has been restarting itself for no apparent reason, and now it refuses to even start windows. If I try to run Windows at all; whether it be safe mode or normally; it just restarts itself entirely ... Read more

Answer:In Sony vaio HDD protection problem?

Hi,

I've never come across this feature before but it seems that you ought to have it enabled.

From what I can gather, it detects sudden movements such as if the machine was dropped or impacted in some other way and it automatically parks the drive head to minimise the risk of damage to the disk.

If you're not being given the option to enable, you will likely find it in scheduled tasks.

Hey guys I bought a G.SKILL Value 2GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) from newegg to upgrade a Sony Vaio VGC RB40. The default ram specs that are installed in it is show in this picture http://i.imgur.com/srFmy.png. When I went and installed the new RAM, and then turned on the computer I did not get any video out neither did it boot up at all. I put back in the old RAM to see if it was the slots that were bad or something else, and the computer worked fine.

At first I thought the RAM I bought is not compatible with the desktop motherboard. I did more research and it should work, also I went by this website http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=VAIO%20VGC-RB40%20Series&Cat=RAM to guide me in what kind of RAM I needed. I updated the BIOS on the computer and nothing happened. Two weeks ago I formatted the hard drive with a new windows XP, and everything is working perfectly.

I tried putting one RAM at a time in all four different slots and still did not boot up, just the fan and the light of the motherboard turned on. Then I try to leave one old RAM and new RAM in, it did boot up but the screen was scrambled. I guess this means that both RAMs are not compatible to work with each other.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? My last thought is that these new RAM are bad.

Thank you.

Answer:Problem Upgrading Ram for Sony Vaio

1. Maximum memory 2GB.
2. Each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.
3. Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

Did you buy a 2 GB stick or two 1GB sticks? It isn't clear from your first sentence.
A 2GB stick will not work. The three sentences above are directly from Crucial's site for VGC RB40 model. You need 2 1GB sticks and you can not use your old RAM with it because the maximum RAM you can install is 2GB total.

I used the recovery partition on my Sony Vaio PCV-RS430G to completely reload my system today.

My backup is located on an external SATA plugged into one of my USB ports. Sony tells me I have 7 USB 2.0 ports.

I have updated Windows XP Home as far as it will go, but all my USB ports are still acting like 1.0.

My backup is 70+ GB and I can't wait a whole day for this thing to copy.

I downloaded the latest chipset driver from Sony, as that was the only driver that seemed like it might have something to do with USB.

Please help! This is so frustrating and I can't find any information anywhere about this problem. I'm using a USB midi controller... and there is almost a second of lag between when I hit a key and the computer produces noise! I need USB 2.0 back!

Hi,

a couple of weeks ago I got my new Sony Vaio Notebook which had Win 8 on it.
After A while I started hating the OS and installed Win 7 Pro 64bit.
I have installed all the Sony Vaio drivers besides 2 important packages (Hotkey utilities & firmware extension parser). These two packages could not be installed. I get an error that says "This update is not inteded for use with your computer model".

The funny thing is that I chose Windows 7 64bit Software from the download page so it actually must work.
I also tried the Win 8 packages but they also didn't help

Can somebody help me?
Is it a Vaio or a Windows 7 issue???

Thanks you!

Answer:Sony Vaio (SVS131290X) hotkey problem with Win 7

Hello Andrew and welcome to Seven Forums.

Couple of questions just to clarify some things.

1. Are you now dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 or did you uninstall Windows 8?

2. Is your Vaio using UEFI? If yes, I'm not sure if that would have a bearing on installing Windows 7 as a dual boot.

3. From where did you obtain the hotkey utilities & firmware extension parser? (Are these Vaio utilities or some other 3rd party software?)

When the battery is plugged in, nothing works. No power up. Zero. Hit the power button as many times as you want and nothing happens at all. This is with AC in too.

As soon as I remove the battery, the laptop goes back to normal with no problems at all. Runs as usual.

Would this be the battery or something more serious?

Please help guys this is driving me insane!

I have a Sony VAIO computer running Windows XP. My computer shut down the other day while I was in the middle of a project, and now it won't start up. It continually reboots, but never gets past the "Intel" logo just after the VAIO logo. It then either gets stuck with a black screen or keeps restarting over and over. I have attempted numerous times to get it into "safe" mode, but F8 only gives me boot driver options, and will not let me get into any kind of safe mode options. Does anyone have any advice?
