Preferred Solution: Seagate USB Harddrive - File System RAW

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Seagate USB Harddrive - File System RAW

Thanks a lot
I need to find out an Indian dealer so that the software can be bought because now we r only able to see the data and can not recover in trial version
Thanks again

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB Harddrive

that...is an odd RPM value for a HD

Hi, I have a 500gb, harddrive wich doesn't start, it worked perfectly before, and now just suddenly it wont start at all. I'm not angry about it yet becuase I still have hope this can get fixed.

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Answer:Seagate external harddrive 1.5 T

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

A while back I bought a Seagate 1TB harddrive, but until recently it was just stored away and not used.
Recently I wanted to expand a XP system I have containing a M4A79XTD Evo mboard, so I just popped in the 1TB. But, to my surprise, the harddrive showed up as only 32MB. So I went into Ubuntu(dualboot with XP) and format the drive, then restart. Back in XP it finally showed up as 939GB. Then I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on later, the drive was back at showing 32MB.

The only thing that worked was when I used ext2 on Ubuntu to format the drive. I wanted to do a clean OS install on the 1TB, but no OS under the sun wants to install, because it jumps back to showing 32MB. I can only store files with Ubuntu under ext2.

I've tried the drive in other computers, with various cables, external enclosures, etc.

So now my question is, do I have a nice looking paperweight, or do I miss something important?

Hi guys,

I'm really in desperate need of help right now. My harddrive just died and all my essays and school stuff are in it and the due dates are within days.

So I turned on my pc this afternoon, did some stuff and turned it off, then i wanted to turn it on again but the harddrive is no longer detected by BIOS.The bios gives the typical message of no harddrive detected, plz insert boot media and press a key blah blah blah.i also noticed that the whole start up becomes incredibly slow, even for loading the bios setup. I bought this new pc during xmas and its just been a lil bit over 3 months.

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes
motherboard is Asus P5QL Pro
4gig mem.
geforce 9800gt
intel 2.5Ghz

the machine's been perfectly normal for 3 months except very occassional blue screens, and now the hd is not dectected all of a sudden.

i did not install anything or remove anything in hardware/software,i tried a different sata cable for dvd-rw which is recognized by bios, plugging into a different sata plug on the motherboard, and nothing happens.

when i start the machine i can hear that there's a couple clicks in the harddrive,so obviously its still running, but after that its all silence and there's no activity at all thereafter.

does this indicate a dead harddrive that can only be replaced?is there any chance i can recover the data on the harddrive?

thx tons for any reply!!!

Answer:seagate harddrive problem

This happened like a day ago for me with the same drive. I fixed it by resetting the cmos, it was either that or the cable was loose (because i took it out and put it back in) so check the cables, if that does not do it, try a cmos flash.

EDIT: wait, the cmos flash fixed my 1tb drive, not the 7200.11, my bad.

I noticed on these two drives they have a jumper pin on them
with jumper pin 1.5 g/sec
without jumper pin 3.0 g/sec

If my motherboard is compatible with the 3.0 g/sec transfer rate
can I pull the jumper out, or do the drives only operate at that speed in a raid configuration or is it even worth the hassle ?

Answer:Seagate 500 & 750 gig Harddrive queston

THat jumper is so that the faster Sata 2 (300Gb/s) drives will work on the older Sata (150Gb/s) sata controllers. If your controllers are Sata 2 then yo can remove the jumper and not worry about it.

I recently installed a new Seagate 500G SATA harddrive and cloned everything over to the new drive. After I reinstalled Norton System Works 2007, now I can't access my backup drive. I can see the D:\ drive in "my computer", but it tells me the file system is missing. How do I fix it? Is there something I can copy from C to D?

Thanks.

I'm using Window XP. Computer Management shows the partition w/ 116 G capacity/free. It says the drive is healthy, but won't reformat it either. Please Help.

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while. Oh yeah and I just recently discovered that on the other computer I tested the drive on it starts up when I plug it in before I start the computer.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. When my Drive is plugged into a 3.0, absolutely nothing happens. i get a green light on the drive, but it does not show up in my bios or in "My Computer". Works perfectly fine in a 2.0 though.

My motherboard is made by gigabyte, and is only about 2 months old, and my drive is 5 months old.

Did you install the 3.0 drivers and enable it in the BIOS? All versions of USB are backwards compatible.

I bought a new Seagate 250GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100 and would like to replace my old drive with it in my Dell? Dimension? 4400 (Pent 4 1.80GHz, 768mb Ram, running Windows XP Home). What is best way to format the harddrive to get it ready to clone - using (Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management > Disk Management) or formating it via Windows XP CD or is there a better way/easier??? Thanks.

Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

Could be any of several causes:
Harddrive dead
not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

As you can see from these images non of the fixes on the fourm, or on seagate work. If you have any fix please reply to this post as soon as you can, or on the other hand any questions. I will be very grateful.

Sorry about the thumbnail, Not sure what happened there.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

I posted this originally here: http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...Now I have more information.Using a Shuttle motherboard, MV42N, I added (2nd drive) this 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 HDD. I checked and LBA is on in BIOS, and the board is reading the drive correctly. Using "AMI BIOS 7.00T". Every time I access the new drive for any length of time, it eventually crashes the system suddenly, turning it off. It used to just stop, or freeze in the middle of a video file (movie) and I'd have to restart, and usually ended up with no sound until I restarted again. Then once we tried uploading 50 Gigs of data from another computer to the drive, for storage, and it kept quitting the upload, and we'd have to restart where we left off. I thought maybe it had a problem with power management scenarios, going into sleep or standby, but I don't know now, since it flat out shuts off the computer now when it wants to.I downloaded Seatools, and ran the DOS test off a floppy, and the drive failed the tests, both short and long. During the long test, it found 95 sector errors, and I asked it to repair. Afterwards, the drive passed.I did a full virus scan on the drive, in Avast, and it came up clean. Around five hours after passing the Seatools test, I was entering the room, and the computer shut down on its own again. I threw the Seatools boot floppy back into its slot and tried to boot to it, unsuccessfully. The fans came on, but no beeps. I did a hard shutdown and started again, and this... Read more

What strange is that the bios is set to boot from cd-rom, if I put in a win cd or a linux cd, it will boot from them. If I put in any other bootable cd, it won't boot or recognize them. I have used this same seagate cd in other systems and it boots fine.
It's this one computer that baffles me. Not recognizing any tools cd's I put in.

I know there's a funny option in the bios about os2 that I've enabled and disabled with no luck in making it happen(boot from seatools).

Anyone run into something like this?

Thanks in advance.

My eMachines T3985 can physically detect and recognize the presence of my new, second drive, a Seagate ST3120025ACE, 120 MB drive, But when the Windows XP comes up no logical volume letter is assigned to the drive.

The bios recognize the drive, the Windows XP information utility also sees the drive, its model, sectors, size, etc, but Windows does not assign a drive letter to it. I believe its formatted.

When this slot was formerly (and is once again) occupied by a 40MB seagate, the drive is detected, seen, and assigned the logical volume F:.

I believe that I have correctly configured the drive as a slave, the second on the IDE chain, etc.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:System cant see new Seagate 120MB drive

Sounds like it's not formated, you might try the software that came with the drive or DiscWizard.

Hi All

I am having a bit of an issue with my Seagate 2 TB External HD. I've attached a screenshot which shows what has happened. The name of the drive, all folders and file types are all random characters and I am unsure about the best way to go about recovering my information. I do not have a backup of all the data that was previously on this drive so I would like to know if it is at all possible to recover it. I have tried the chkdsk command prompt, however I get a message telling my access is denied, and when I try the scan and recover from the file explorer, the drive just disconnect and reconnects itself. Any help with resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Andrew

I want to create a system recovery using my Seagate external drive.  I launched the create system recovery.  It gives me 3 choices for storage -- a flash drive, dvd and something else, but NOT an external drive.  The wheel just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning waiting for me to put a flash drive or dvd into the USB port.  Why can't I use the Seagate external drive???

Hello,

I am using FreeAgent Go 5oo GB , when I try safely remove FreeAgent Go always show the error massage " Seagate FreeAgent Go USB device can not be uninstalled right now because the system request system restart " and I have to restart every time.

I have already tried the following :

1. Close all application and end recent file process.
2. Check " don't remove file to the recycle bin, remove file immediately when delete" in the recycle bin.
3. Disable write caching on the device in devive property "policy" tab.
4. Using third party sync.exe to flushes disk buffers together with HotSwap!.exe yet still shown the same error massage.

What would be the cause of the error massage ? Also please suggest the appropriate way to safely remove the device and I would appreciate all advise.

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent request system restart

How exactly are you trying to Eject this drive? I've seen a "cannot be STOPPED right now" but never a "cannot be UNINSTALLED right now"?

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

I've successfully used this drive (which has plenty of spare space) to create System Images but it is not accepted as a suitable drive for File History - tried all 3 USB ports and tried re-starting computer. I've already used a 2gb memory stick for File History but this is now full. I've looked at the tutorials but not found them helpful on how to change backup drive. Go to Settings/Update and security/Backup make sure File History is ON. In File History, Choose Select a different Drive. Click the Stop Using this drive to remove the old backup drive. Then Add your current Drive.

Hello I recently was unable to boot up the Windows 7 OS I had received an error saying saying I might have a failing hard drive so I looked up how to fix this. Ultimately I ended up completely cleaning my HD of all partitions since the main partition had switched from NTFS to RAW After cleaning the HD I began a clean install of Windows 7 home premium to the unallocated space which ended up giving me this error: WINDOWS COULD NOT FORMAT A PARTITION ON DISK 0 THE ERROR OCCURRED WHILE PREPARING THE PARTITION SELECTED FOR INSTALLATION. ERROR CODE: 0x80070057 I also tried creating a partition before installing windows 7 which was done using gparted (cmd.exe would take an immense amount of time to convert a partition to RAW were as GPARTED had no troubles)Then went and installed windows 7 but I received this error: WINDOWS CANNOT INSTALL REQUIRED FILE. MAKE SURE ALL FILES REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION ARE AVAILABLE, AND RESTART INSTALLATION. ERROR CODE: 0x8007045D I have tried using another Win7 install DVD and still no luck. Reading on the subject it is advised to check the HD using the manufactures diagnostics cd I have a Momentus Seagate 500gb HD installed so I used the HD diagnostics cd supplied by Seagates websiteRunning this it said I had no drive installed or sata controller (cable?)

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Seagate momentus HDD drive can not install Operating System (OS)

Remove all partitions and partition as NTFS. Then try the diagnostics after quick format of the drive.

I bought this on the understanding that it was a device that I could access wirelessly and transfer files into and out of it.

It is a good backup device for my desktop which is wired to it permanantly through my Router and backs up all my work continuously.
I can connect to it wirelessly with my Laptop and download files for viewing only. I cannot edit those files or upload additional ones into this drive. This difficult as I do a lot of entry away from home.
I followed the instructions on the Help File and hardwired the Laptop to my router with the result it totally wiped all my Desktop Data and replaced it with that from the Laptop. Has anyone had experience of this system and can they help me?

Peter

Answer:Seagate GoFlex Home Network Storage System 2Tb

Sorry no experience. Hopefully, some permissions need setting. A quick read thru' this search mentions something about data being wiped on a new setup.
Have you had a look/posted in Seagate forums?
Bit quiet here just now. Maybe someone will jump in.
Are you using XP/Vista/7/Mac?
Until you solve it, I suppose Dropbox/Google Docs or USB Flash sticks could be used for your work. Maybe you were doing that before buying the Golfex anyway.

Hi all,
I have an external Seagate FreeAgent 750GB HDD, and trying to use it via the eSata interface. The problem I am facing is that, it hangs when trying to copy a large (>3GB) file TO it from my main disk.

It will seriously hang, the computer becomes unresponsive (the mouse works, but can't start any program at all, not even an explorer window).

In smaller files (650MB) there is no problem. Also, there is no problem when using the USB interface (although I haven't tested it thoroughly).

The motherboard used is an Asus P5K Deluxe. I have experienced this problem in Windows XP AND Windows Vista, 32 and 64-bit versions.

Any help?

the "BackUp Failed " error message.

The computer says the drive has 4.54 TB unused, but still not enough space for backup and system image?  What gives?

Please help.

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Getting the "unable to delete extended partitions while logical drives exist" message in Fdisk, but all logical drives have been erased.I don't know what make of HDD the laptop has, but am I safe to use the Seagate Disk Wizard Starter Edition to erase/zerofill the drive ready for XP to go back on?Thanks.

Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

Hi. I'm brand new to C++ and need to change some source code for a DLL that I have in a cab file. I want the executable to look for a file on my harddrive in a certain directory. If that file is there, I want to exit the .exe, otherwise continue on in the code. Can someone help me out with this? For example, lets say I want to look if a file called temp.txt is in the \windows directory. Thanks!

I have some *.cda files on my hard drive and NO cd to burn, how can I convert them so I can play them from the hard drive?

Answer:how can I convert a .cda file on my harddrive

If you are certain that they are actual audio files, & not just audio labels (as you'd get when looking at files on an audio cd) then there are a number of different programs that should do it - iTunes & MusicMatch for example. There are also on-line converters like Zamzar."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Neat little experiment I want to partake in:

Say I have a 100 GB HD: I want every single write action on the drive to be done twice, so that it actually acts at half efficiency, 50GB or even less due to overhead, but with a copy of every file written existing twice. I save funmusic.flac to the harddrive, it gets saved twice in preferably distant physical locations on the harddrive perhaps in their own little folders like Original and Mirror at the root of the drive. (If I search for funmusic.flac on the drive's root I'd see it show up twice)

It's kinda like a RAID on a single drive, is there software like that out there?

Perhaps I would have better luck with a backup software that can somehow do immediate backups after every operation. Any neat ideas for this experiment?

Answer:FIle Mirrorer on same Harddrive?

everything im seeing for raid only works at a disk level. which makes sense since the word disks is part of the acronym.

i did find this but i've never used it before.

OS - Windows SP2
System - Pentium P4
Memory - 1 Gig

Saved an E-mail attachment to my Harddrive. The file had an EML extension. Scanned it with Norton and it was clean. Double clicked it and nothing happened. After running the file, it dropped the EML extension and now shows Zero Bytes. The file name is

"Mars - in August - Must see...REMINDER..."

When I tried deleting it, it said the file could not be found. The file name is in the folder greyed out but every utility I use says it cannot find the file. I've been able to rename the folder from C:\Temp to C:\Temp2 and move all the subfolders into a new C:\Temp.

I've ran a complete scan on the drive with System Works, Disk Doctor, and every other utility I have at my disposal without success. I ran a program (Can't remember the name) that was supposed to delete the file on the next Boot Up but that didn't work. However it did find the file and indicated it was a System, Hidden file. If tried booting to DOS and searching for the file, but it isn't there.

The file hasn't has any detrimental effects on my system but I would just like to get rid of it. I like a clean system and this is bugging me.

Any ideas how I can get rid of this Nonexistent file?

Answer:Nonexistent file on harddrive

If I have this right, you have a folder called C:\temp with the weird file in it?

Have you tried to give it a new extention or replace .eml? ( you can do this by unticking show known extentions in Tools > Folder Options > View ) also while there click show all hidden files and folders.

or you could try and use this app ( trial version ) and completly wipe that folder and contents ( as you have them now backed up ) http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=730 either right click folder and send to Eraser or Drag and Drop it in the main window and click Erase All.

I have a business laptop with safeboot encryption meaning I have to enter a username/password before the OS can boot. This would also mean that I can't boot to a windows recovery disk to tell windows to recover to a System Image if I'm not mistaken. If this is true then the rest of my question will be somewhat void unless I can convince the folks to unencrypt my drive for a day while I build my image and recreate on the new drive. What I am trying to figure out if a System Image will allow me to backup my current setup on a 80 GB HD to a 250 GB HD. Trying to make restoring my OS as painless as possible as I've honestly gotten everything the way I want it. I do see this http://www.clonezilla.org/ which to be honest I've never used before. I've used Ghost and could go that route but this would still require I believe booting to a CD which with the environment/encryption I can't do currently. Let me know your thoughts please.

Answer:Win 7: System Image : New Harddrive

You can store a disc image on any medium (cd, dvd, hd, removable hd) and restore from that medium. I've never used Clonezilla but I've been using Acronis True Image for a long time.

I have just finished building a new PC, and installed windows (xp home OEM)on it. After the installation, it wanted to restart the computer before finishing the rest of the process (registration, etc). So i let it, but the comp won't boot from the harddrive. It is a SATA drive. I have checked the boot order in the BIOS, and it is floppy, harddrive, CD drive. I can hear it check the floppy drive, and then it says it is checking the CD drive and that's where it stops. It doesn't even seem to be trying to boot from the harddrive at all.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda. The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 nForce 4.

One thing i should note, is that further up on the screen where it tries to boot, it says 'checking for master harddrive SMART capability.....None'.

Anyway, i'm at a loss. As far as i know the drive is connected right, and it must be working OK to a certain extent, as the windows install CD can see it, can see the partition it made on it, and can see that it has installed windows on it. So the drive itself or cable i don't think can be at fault.

It therefore seems to me that whatever part of the computer it is that generates those first few white text-on black backround screens, prior to booting windows (i'm a newbie to this, you can tell) can't find or won;t use the harddrive.

So, does anyone have any ideas of suggestions, please?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Answer:System won't boot from harddrive

Do you have the drivers for your SATA controller, they should have come with the motherboard on a floppy. While installing XP, the installation should pause and ask you for RAID or SATA drivers, at which point you would insert the floppy disk.

Help needed:

I have a 120g harddrive that is partitioned. One partition is my C-drive with Windows XP installed on it. The second partition on the harddrive is misc files, which I have moved to another harddrive.

I also have a 2nd 160g harddrive, D-drive, that has nothing on it at the moment.

I would like to have as precise as possible, step by step instructions on how to un-partition the C-drive and put Windows XP back on it, without reinstalling Windows XP, if possible.

I kind of have an idea on how to do it, just not sure of how to do it, if you know what I mean.

I know I have to backup the Windows XP system from the C-drive. What is a good easy to use product for the backup and where to go from there, i am not sure of.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
RwsRichard

Answer:Unpartition System harddrive help

You can use the HDD manufactures free utility to copy/transfer a bootable image (your OS) from one HDD to another, then format/partition then use the utility to copy your OS back to the drive.

Other software that can resize your HDD is Partition magic, not free though

This might work, it's free http://majorgeeks.com/Partition_Resizer_d4701.html

I have just started to use a new machine I put together and I'm trying to take my old hard drive (a Maxtor Fireball 3 30 GB) and connect it to the new machine as a slave drive. The master hard drive in the new machine is a Western Digital WDC WD800BB. Now I know the IDE 2 slot on the motherboard is working because the system recognizes the CD-ROM drive. I have tried every jumper setting possible. I follow the WDC setting. The Maxtor is a 9 pin drive, so the WDC said to put two jumpers when running a dual set up. This did not work. I tried to set it how Maxtor wants it where if it's going to be a slave drive then there shouldn't be a jumper at all. I thought that it might be a system level issue , but I've tried every combination in the drive sequence to make it work and it just won't. Every time it says that the drive is not found. I know the drive works fine because I can put it back in the old machine and it boots right up. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've even set each drive to the manufacturers specifications and it still doesn't work. What's also strange is that the WDC has to be set on cable select to work even with out a cable select cable connected. This is all happening before the OS ever boots up. Any suggestions?

Answer:System won't accept harddrive

If this is a new machine, why use such outdated [and slow] drives? Even the WD is only a 2meg cache drive. Modern mb are really designed to use sata drives.

Next if you really really must use these drives, post your exact system specs AND how you have them connected; ie Asus xxx123 motherboard with drives connected to ide1, ide2, etc.

Please help me!!!! I get an error message saying "C:\ access denied" everytime I double click my harddrive icon.I was changing the icons in the "file type" tab of the "folder options" window. I supposed I made a mistake or something; because afterwards, I noticed that my "Local Disk (C:)" icon does not take me to C:\ anymore. It searches instead. At this point, I still could open "Local Disk (C:)" by right clicking and selecting "Open" in a dropdown menu. However, I didn't like the idea that I had to do this open "C:\." So I went back to "folder options" "file type" tab and selected drive. I did not know "find" was supposed to be default. So, I created "Open" by clicking advanced and then new. I typed:Action: OpenApplication used to perform action: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exeuse DDE [checked]Application: Windows ExplorerTopic:Drive*Note: windows will not allow me to go back and change the "Open" file type information.I am still able to get to one of my harddrive's information by entering through the "My Documents" shortcut. hi,

i am facing some problem copying movie files to my portable hard disk.

it said. 'cannot copy:the request could not be performed because of I/O device error' or something like that

the files were .avi .mpeg .wmv
i cn only move(cut) the file to my externalhdd

why is this happening to my computer?

Answer:Can't Copy File To External Harddrive

How large are the movie files? If they're over 4GB and the external drive is FAT32 file system, you will be unable to transfer the files to the drive, as that's beyond the maximum size for a file on FAT32. If this is the situation, unless you are happy to split the files, you'd need to change to NTFS as the file system on the external drive.

Hi I don't know if this is a virus or what , I've done a virus check on the drive and it came up with nothing but this file cannot be deleted. when you try it says file cannot be deleted as is being used by another person or program and it seems to slow the whole machine down when you try and do anything with it. But as soon as I unplug the external hard drive it goes back to normal so it something to do with that. How do I get rid of this.CheersPhil

I received that message right now and then it launched "Intel Matrix Storage Console". So it says my C drive may fail. How does this happen? Is it because I only have 30 gigabytes left in my harddrive (out of a total of 250 gb)?
Also sometimes my computer just shuts down for no reason (i've had this problem once in a while). Is that due to overheating or leaving the computer on too long?

Answer:A harddrive in the system reports it may fail

Mechanical hard drives do fail, they do not last forever. I would back up your data and replace the drive ASAP.

Check your temperatures and post results. It could be heat or a faulty power supply.

I successfully backed up my computer to an external harddrive using Windows 7 backup. I used Windows recommended settings.

My computer's local disk is currently 216 GB. When I backed up my computer to the harddrive it says that the backup is 384 GB.

Can somebody explain to me why my backup is larger than my system's harddrive?

Also, just so you know, I don't have any previous backups that need to be deleted. And just to be sure I ran the backup numerous times always getting the same size as a result (384 GB).

I would like to have a complete backup but don't want to use up so much space. Is there an easy way to change a setting so that I can save disk space on my external drive while have a thorough and comprehensive backup.

Much Thanks!

Answer:Why is my backup larger than my system's harddrive?

How many partitions in this PC?

How many partitions were imaged?

What is the total size of the hard drive that contains your C partition, including unoccupied space?

Did you by any chance do a "sector by sector" backup? I don't use Windows Backup and don't know if that is even a possibility.

hello,
I took a win95 hardrive out of a system and installed it in an enclosure with USB connection. I am trying to access it with a xp system. the harddrive only lists 3 files on it, but shows that there is storage on the disk in the xp system. I believe the drive was compressed. The win95 system was not booting, but rather giving an error message, when it was turned on- so we were never able to back up the important info. Is there anything you can tell us to help get the info transfered or opened from that harddrive using xp?

Thanks.

Answer:help with accessing win95 harddrive on xp system

I'm not a PC expert, but, I'm guessing if you are correct and it was compressed, the only way would be to either use Windows 95 booted from another drive or CD to turn off the compression.

There may be third party utilities (I'm thinking like Partition Magic) which may handle reading and detecting the '95 compressed disk to at least help you get the data off - not sure about this, but, it's a thought and you should be able to get a trial version to test it.

Recently I upgraded my Motherboard Proccessor and Videocard and now am having troubles booting up. I expected since i didnt switch my harddrive or anything i could boot windows XP from my harddrive. It didnt work, it kept getting to the screen where windows is loading (the one with the DL bar looking thing) then automatically restarts itself. So i went into my bios and set it up to boot the cd rom first and put in the windows Xp disc. Now i can get to the windows setup (blue screen) and it loads all the XP files etc, everything seems to be working fine. Then it cuts to a screen saying:

"windows has dectected a problem and is shutting down to prevent any further damage to your computer.... Please check for any virusies. Remove any newly installed harddrives or harddrive controllers. Check to make sure your harddrivers properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F for any harddrive corruption. Then restart your computer."

i know my harddrive is fine it just worked before the switch i was thinking i could just clear it and reinstall windows so now the question comes: Can I clear my harddrive without an operating system?

and if you guys read my post and think theres anything i can do other then get a clean harddrive please post!

Edit: i should prob say that i have tried booting up in all safe modes and it still restarts on its own freewill

thankyou,
Gimpzilla

Is it possible to have system restore on an external harddrive so it is not taking up space on my C drive?

Answer:Is it possible to have system restore on an external harddrive?

Hello knk17forever,

Sorry, but when you turn on system protection for a HDD, it is also stored on that specific HDD. You cannot have the restore points save on another HDD than the HDD that system protection is turned on for.

My father's notebook became a junker when my brother broke the LCD screen and I attempted and failed at soldering a new adapter port into the computer. So we've found a couple of the same computers that come with out a hard drive but it says it doesn't have an operating system. If I plug in the hard drive from the old computer and put it into a new computer, would I have to worry about an operating system? I always thought the operating systems were on the hard drive.

Answer:Old Harddrive New Computer No Operating System

IF its a xyz brand model 123 and you move the HD to the same big box computer and model nr it might work. But for any chance it has to be the same make/model.
Not a sure thing, but worth a try. Worst case is you have to reinstall XP.

I have my new system built. I'm ready to format hard drives and install Win XP Pro. I have two 750 gig drives. One master working drive and the other for backup. Here is how I plan to setup the partitions:

Drive 1:
2 partitions
a. OS and Apps (60 gigs)
b. Data

Drive 2:
2 partitions
a. OS and Apps
b. data

Question:

1. Should I also add a third partition, on drive 2, for a fresh install of the OS?
2. How do I do this? Do I install, format and install OS, then install drive 2 and then backup OS before installing any apps?
I appologize if this is a stupid question.
Thanks,

Elizbeth

For reasons that have to do with my silly RAID 5 (which has nothing to do with this post) I need to transfer my operating system from the hard drive it is on to a new hard drive. When I added the new hard drive it became drive D. I copy the partition and then extended it using partition magic. Then I restated my computer and unpluged the original operating system drive. It gets all the way to the starting windows screen and then hangs. So I plugged the original hard drive back in, but changed the boot priority. It booted from the new hard drive, but the new hard drive was still drive D so all the programs were running off the c drive since none of the references were changed. I can't change the drive letter in windows how ever much I try and my guess on why it didn't boot when I unplugged the main drive is that it was trying to boot as drive D.

Helps!

Ralph

Answer:Copying my operating system to another harddrive

How did you "copy the partition"? If you used imaging software and cloned the drive there should be no issue with drive letters.

Im not sure if this should be posted in Windows XP (OS im using) forum or not, but Im posting it here anyway.

I have a fairly old computer that has nearly passed its prime. Its a Gateway that I bought 6 or 7 years ago. Theres nothing really wrong with it, asides from being a lil dusty.. but most of the parts in it are outdated, despite my efforts to replace and upgrade certain things like RAM and video.

My mother recently bought a new computer and tossed out her slightly older one, thinking there was something wrong with it. I got to messing with it and realized it was just a bad harddrive. So i popped a new one in there I had lying around and vroom off it went.

So i got 2 computers here.. my 1200 dollar gateway (at the time of purchase) and her 400 dollar wal-mart computer lol.

However, i got to looking at her old computer.. and sadly, its slightly more advanced than my own. A faster AMD processor(as opposed to my pentium 4), more RAM than mine initially came installed with, a built-in geforce 6100 (as opposed to my puny, separately purchased 5200), a seemingly more advanced motherboard with a PCIe connection, and im sure theres a various host of other things that I do not even realize.

So i say to myself, hmm.. ok.. ill just take my harddrive out of my old computer and plug it in this one.. and everything will be hunky-dory, right? wrong.

I can boot up in safe mode and everything is fine (im in safe mode right now making my plea to you all), but when I try to run wind... Read more

I am surprised to hear that you were able to boot into safe mode. Windows probably has no idea what hit it when it tries to boot up with a new motherboard that has a different microprocessor and other different hardware.

There is also the small legal issue that you may not have permission to run Windows XP from the older computer on the newer computer. If the old computer came with a pre-installed OEM version of Windows XP, I believe the user license is valid only for use on the original motherboard.

If your mom's PC came with recovery discs, you may want to consider to first backup all of the files you want to keep, confirm the backed up files are OK, and then reformat the hard drive. Then use the recovery discs for a clean installation of the operating system for that particular motherboard.

Hi,
I own a iRiver h340 mp3 player and the music is displayed in directories. When i enter the music browser it finds the first file on the disk and displays that directory. This has become an annoyance for me as the file it finds first is burried within about 4 subdirectories and i must navigate out of these to start at the root of the dir.

The solution to this problem is to place a file in the root dir and also have this file at the very beginning of the disk.

If you know how this can be accomplished please help me out.

Answer:Move file to beginning of harddrive disk

What happens if you copy the file to your C: root drive? Make sure it is there, then rename your old file to *****[email protected]@@. Play your new file to make sure it works. The @@@ is something other than what it ends in at present. Don't alter it to *.bak or *.old as CCleaner or other programs will delete it and you may not want that to happen immediately. Bazza

I wonder if you can setup Outlook so that it saves email on another location, for example on an external USB harddrive. I know the email file is buried deep inside "my documents" folder on XP and I want to change location so that all my data files are on a separate harddrive.

Answer:Save email file to another harddrive? (Outlook)

There should be an option in Outlook (under Options) that changes the location of the store folder. I've done this a few times without any major problem. Keep in mind that Outlook doesn't move files that are already in the directory (at least, I don't think that Outlook 2k did; 2003 might for you) so you might have to move those files yourself. Just watch where those files are located and copy paste them into the new directory. Should work.

I am looking for something so when I drop a file into a folder it automatically also copies it to a folder on my external harddrive.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Answer:I put a file in one folder want it copied to an external harddrive

Did a little thinking about this one and came up with a solution.

Rather than drag and drop the file(s) to another folder, use a "Send To" shortcut when you right-click the file. You can then have this shortcut perform the necessary actions. Here's how it works:

1. Open C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\SendTo
2. Create a new batch file in here, such as "Mirror_to_external_HD.bat"

This file will contain the following:

Code:

@echo off
:nextfile
if "%1"=="" goto end
copy %1 c:\your_local_directory_to_copy_to
copy %1 x:\your_external_hard_drive_to_copy_to
shift
goto nextfile
:end

3. now when you want to copy file(s) to both the local folder and the external hard drive, just right-click the file(s) and select Send To -> Mirror to external HD

The important part of the script are the two lines which do the copy to both locations. The loop and shift is to be able to processes multiple files at a time (they are each treated as a separate command-line argument).

Hi

I made a few months back a backup of my machine(windows 7 64bit edition). The size was like 25gb's so I saved it on my external hard-drive(I bought a case and put a hard drive(Seagate I think) in it).

I know want to use this to restore my computer. So I made a system repair disk and loaded it up.

However it cannot find my external hard-drive. I have "WindowsImageBackup " in my root directory of my external drive.

Yet it still does not see it. I would install some drivers but I have no clue what drives I need as when I plug it into my computer and I am in windows 7 it finds my drive.

What do I need to make window 7 recognize my image?

Answer:How to connect my external harddrive to be used with System Repair dis

First determine that the image vhd exists and can be mounted.

Go into Disk Management then
Action > Attach VHD > Browse to folder WindowsImageBackup
Double clicking into folder then into the folder "Backup ---------"
Select the largest .vhd if more than one
Select and choose ok to mount.

Your image should appear as a mounted version of your imaged disk. Ckeck that it looks like the imaged disk.

To detach - Right click on left "Disk n" block.

Hello, randomly my main disk goes to 100% usage and either
1 Stops the system responding for 10-30 seconds
2 Refuses to let me switch programs without a freeze

This 100% usage occurs for 10-30 seconds. This issue started occuring 4 days ago and has happened 5 times. This issue has also happened on Windows 10

I have looked in the event logs and found this
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued. As well as Reset to device, \Device\ACHIPort0, was issued.

Answer:Harddrive randomly goes to 100% and system doesn't respond

Open a Command Prompt (it is at Programs>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt) right click on it and select "run as administrator" then type in "Chkdsk C: /f /r" (without the quotes). This will scan the hard disk for errors and try to relocate any data on bad sectors.

As the title states, I have an external hard drive on which I will back up my system image, but don't you need Legacy USB turned on to boot the new system image from the BIOS? I have no CD drive on my netbook and the down arrow key is missing, so I can't select anything in the BIOS. Boot options (pressing f8 repeatedly while booting) works, but it doesn't give me a method to boot into a system image. I've been fiddling around with the imageres files and so far nothing terrible has happened, but I want to be able to save my computer if something were to happen. Any ideas as to what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: It also has no PS/2 port, which the BIOS only seems to allow for an external keyboard's use.

Answer:How to restore from an ex. HardDrive system image w/o Legacy USB?

Was this system image created with windows backup utility?

Or another program?

If windows backup and restore was used:

You can always reinstall windows and go into the backup and recovery in control panel and do advanced recovery methods-restore from a system image you created previously.
