Question: No sound from Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop

Hi all
Just done a fresh install of XP Pro, now no sound, no startup/shutdown music. The sound card is OK, the speakers are working as the error bleeps etc are making there sounds. Any ideas please?
Thanks

Preferred Solution: No sound from Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No sound from Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop

It sounds like you haven't installed the sound/audio drivers, which aren't part of XP and which you should be able to get from the Dell website. There may be other drivers you need to install too - look in Device Manager for yellow exclamation marks.

i've been looking around for days, so i wouldnt be posting here unless i was completely desperate.

i got my laptop, Dell Inspiron 6400 about 2 weeks ago. Tried Vista, hated it.. formatted to my old XP Home. realised i had to download and install all the drivers myself as i dont have any cd's or manuals from Dell. so i did that..

only problem is my 'Ethernet Controller' and 2 'PCI Devices# have yellow exclamation marks next to them, and i have no sound on the laptop. ive tried absolutely everything. hundreds of different drivers, tutorials, etc. i'm very desperate. i need my sound back. please help if you have ANY idea's.

thanks very much.

Hi, I recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 6400 about 2 months ago.

For the past few days,I've been getting sound only on the left laptop speaker. It is not permanent, it is intermittent and the sound on the right still works, but it keeps switching on and off. There is no disturbance in quality.

I've checked my driver (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC) and there are no updates for it.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic.

Anyone have any idea what this is caused by? Have I damaged something?

Thanks

Hey, worked for me on my Dell Inspiron 6400, with the home drive installed as drive E: instead of C: which happened when I put in a new hard drive. Anyway, the sound has not worked for 3 years and this fixed itftp://ftp.dell.com/audio/R107035.EXEwhen I ran the exe it asked wher to put the driver and I selected the E: drive, and the folder that exists in dell/drivers/R12nnnn which I wont spell out because of you know, hackers and stuff.Rebooted and she's all done.thankyou thankyou thankyou.

My cousin bought this laptop second hand - somehow he 'caught a cold' with it - it would run - but so slowly and not always obeying the keyboard - he brought it to me to fix.I found that it had McAfee Security and Norton Ghost installed - both of which had expired - so, knowing his kids habit of surf dangerous sites I reckon he had quite a few viruses aboard.Fortunately I have been able to reinstall his operating system (via Cntl/F11) so the machine is healthy again (and a good machine it is!). One problem however has arisen, the left 'mouse' button does not work - probably didn't before the reinstall process - but I'm not sure. Is there a chance that this could have resulted from that reinstall. I think not, it's just broken - but what do you think - is this a machine weak spot? Meanwhile, as a wireless mouse works OK I shall advise him to get one.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop

the left 'mouse' button does not work I think what you think it just busted, sometimes you can look for faults that are not really there, if a wireless mouse works you have sorta answered your own question...

Hi people hope you are all well.
This is my first post and I hope you can help me because I feel I am going in sane else.
I have a Bought a Dell inspiron 6400 laptop.
It is running Vista and everything works perfectly except the sound.
I have unistalled drivers intalled the Dell drivers as recommended but still nothing.
There is no sound at all on start up, windows sound, internet, media player. I have even tried to plug it in to the super video outlet and play it through a TV and still no sound. I have tried the head phone socket with good headphones and that does not work either. I have taken it apart to check the speakers and cables and they are plugged in correctly and not broken and the cable is good.
I think it must be down to the motherboard that controls the sound because the laptop dictates everything is working correctly and when you play music you can see the bars jumping in tune it is though you have got the sound turned down to 0, it is set on 100%.
Any help guys n girls.
Den.

My laptop seems to be dead? when I try to boot up it remains as a black screen & fan does not run. I have been told by a friend that it means the processor is dead.
P.S. It does not respond to disc's or function buttons.

Answer:dell inspiron 6400 laptop

hi, so when you try to switch on you hear absolutely nothing, and see no lights? couple of first steps - you never know it may work: with the battery removed and the power adapter removed, press in the on/off button for about 20 seconds, then put back the power adapter and try switching on again. If no go, remove power adapter and battery again, remove and reseat ram modules. Then put back power adapter and try switching on again. Does anything happen?
Did the laptop die when you were using it? Did you have any error messages in the days before this happened?

Hello everyone,
Recently the 4 key on my laptop fell off, and I do not want to do anything to mess it up before finding out if there is a safe way to put it on without replacing the whole keyboard(i could do that, have done it before, but I do not feel like spending the dough for a new keyboard). Thanks in advance,
Ilya

Hi, I have a Dell 6400 Inspiron Laptop. It all of a sudden stopped holding a charge. I thought it was the charger. Got a new charger and it still doesn't work. I was told it is the motherboard? Could this be the problem? How do I what product to buy to try to replace it? Where to buy? Is it worth trying to replace it or buy a new laptop?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a college student with little money and can't afford to spend lots to fix my computer. It is only 2 years old and of course, just ran out of warranty.

I'm thinking of buying a Dell Inspiron 6400 which has the Intel Duo Processor and the basic price does seem quite reasonable - about £600 - but was wondering if it's worth the extra upgrading to the ATI Radeon graphic card listed below for the extra 116? (I´m in Spain). I do not really go in for gaming but would all other applications perform well with the basic Intel 950 graphics onboard? The PC does come with 1024MB of memory installed as standard. Also are there any opinions yet on this new Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop? Many thanks.Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory [Incluido en el precio] Tarjeta grafica de 128MB ATI® MOBILITY? Answer:Graphic card for the Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop?

Heres a link for the others so they can see what you're talking about click here I thought initially that you had it wrong as you mentioned a graphics card and laptops, in general do not have graphics cards per se as they are integrated on the board. I now see what you mean, the more expensive laptop is tempting as it appears to have a DVD writer as well as more memory and the different integrated graphics. Wish I could advise but I'm afraid I can't comment on how much better the graphics is but with the extra 512mb RAM and the DVD writer it would definately be better. I'm sure some of the others who have laptops and have seen these graphics options will advise.

My brother in laws daughter was playing games and has accidentally pressed some wrong button on his laptop changing the orientation of the monitor image. I'm a MacUser running Vista on Parallels... and I have been trying to figure out how to fix it for them. I have gone into Control Panel and then into Monitors... as I was hoping there would be a setting to rotate the monitor view.... but no such luck. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this... as his daughter also needs to have it working for school assignments.

I bought a used computer that is exactly the same as the one I am using now. Do you think it is possible for me to take my old hard drive and just put it into the new computer?

Dell Inspiron 6400 to Dell Inspiron 6400.

They are both the same year and have the same numbers on the back. Do you know if there will be a problem taking my old hard drive and sticking it into the other computer.

I'm changing computers because my current one, has 'on' button troubles, the screens a bit flimsy on its hinges, and the upper right corner isn't connected where it should be.

I plan on copying all my data off the old hard drive just to keep it safe incase of trouble. Is there any easy why to do this?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Question: Dell Inspiron 6400

Hi, I'm considering buying a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook - Core T Duo processor 2400, 1GB RAM, Mobility Radeon X1300, 15.4-inch, 80GB hard drive - for £711. Dell seem to be the cheapest option around, but I wondered if anyone had any experience with them - particularly regarding their reliablity?

Are they a good buy? Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks, Jake

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400

For me Dell laptops are amongst the worst made. The graphics are fair, but even when you unload all their proprietary crap software, I don't care how much ram you put in those things, they run like turtles.
For price and quality www.hpshopping.com blows them to bits with the same deals on free freight and free cdrw's or whatever today's special is. And don't be afraid of the Compaqs which are now their promo line, I am on an outstanding 17" model.

Question: Dell Inspiron 6400

Himy son is after a new laptop around(£800-£900) for use at uni.I have come across the "Dell Inspiron 6400"which seems to have reasonable specs, does anyone have one,if so comments please. Can anyone give info on which O.S is the better option to choose,Windows XP Home or Media Centre Edition 2005.Regards tonyq

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400

Depends what he needs to do with it, If it's just for word processing and surfing the web, then it's more than enough. My baseline Inspiron 1300 is fine for that and anything else I chose to throw at it. Though it would need a memory upgrade if I wanted to use it for heavy duty graphics or 3d imaging work.As to what OS, I'd go for XP home as I really don't see the point of spending the extra for media centre unless you've got a silent PC with a large enough screen and quality stereo output to make it of any use.Don't forget to buy some security for it, a cable lock should be a minimum.

Question: Dell Inspiron 6400

HI ALL

I am new to forum and I have a problem with my dell inspiron 6400 laptop. Actually I bought this from an unknown seller about a month ago. last night when I was working on it, It stop responding to me. So i press the power button to restart the computer. I shut off properly as the windows shuts down with all the messages but when i start it again it does not restart. Its lights come on for about three seconds and nothing on screen and then there is no light or power in it. I tried many things like with ac adapter or with out ac adapter or without hard drive or without dvd rom as told by dell technician.

If anybody has any idea or any suggestions, well come.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400

This is definitely a hardware issue. An essential hardware device is broken and the system can't even initialize.

I used to work for Dell. If the laptop is still under hardware warranty thy can send a technician to your place to fix it. If it's not still under warranty or the warranty is not transferable then you'll need to take it to a local computer store.

Hello aLLy07, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums!

There are no drivers available specifically for the Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop in Windows 7. However there are 32 bit Vista drivers that should work. Actually, Microsoft Update *should* find all the drivers your laptop needs to run Windows 7 32 Bit. If you need a driver for a specific hardware device (like a wireless card) please say so and we can see what can be done.

Go to the Bios with the drive attached and see if it is being recognized. If not then you should open the case and make sure the IDE cable is connected properly to the MOBO and the drive. You may have a bad controller.

I hope that I have put this question in the right forum......

I am going to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop hard drive from 100GB to 500GB. I have Acronis which I plan to use to do the job, which as far as I can see involves cloning the 100 GB drive and putting it onto the 500 GB drive.

But I don't think it can be as simple as that.

Do I have to alter the Bios to take into account the size of the new drive before I boot it.

When I look at what the excising hard drive contains using Partition Magic
there are 4 sections
Status
DELLUTILITY(*) Fat 78.4MB None Primary
Local disc (C) NTFS 90.797.1MB Active Primary
Local Disk(*) CP/M.Conc 3.074.9 None Primary
(*) unallocated 7.8 None Primary

My next question is will Acronis configure my new drive with the same types of file system i.e. Fat NTFS CP/M.Conc, Some of these look like files that might be needed to recover machine configuration in cases of failure.

Is there anything else that I need to do to make a success of the clone

Hi,

I got a dell Inspiron 6400, when I turn it on it's turning off immediately after the bios loads..

Sometimes it loads to the windows and if I try to load a CD it just turns off or if I try to boot with a CD it turns off, also I managed to do a diagnostic test and got the DST Fail error code: 1000-0146

You have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks,
Pizu

HDD changed too.

still same...

Answer:DELL Inspiron 6400 Issue

DST stands for Drive Self Test and because it's failing it might mean that the drive itself is failing. According to my boss (who is much more experienced with computer repair than myself) suggests that the test itself might be corrupt.
Have you tried testing these two drives outside the laptop?

Hi everyone,

I have a dell inspiron 6400 notebook which I am planning on connecting (permenently) to my TV to use with a remote keyboard. I am planning on just putting the computer on the shelf with my dvd player etc, so I was wondering if I could completely remove the monitor part of the computer so I don't have to take it out and lift the monitor to turn it on every time. If I disconnect the LCD, will the computer run fine if attached to the TV or will this throw it off in any way?

Thanks for any help in advance,

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 - run without monitor?

You do not need an external monitor for a laptop at all
Maybe I don't understand the question well enough, but a computer does not need a monitor to turn on and boot up, but a laptop has a built in screen, so I'm a tad confused anyway

I recently fitted 2GB memory cards in the laptop (doubling the RAM) but its no faster. We don't use any games, it's only for my photos (which I haven't put on yet) and searching the web. Thank's B.J.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 Speed up.

Have you tried running the free version of malwarebytes just to make sure the computer is clear of any spyware problems.Defrag maybe.Or drivers needing updated.Give c Cleaner a run to remove any old crap on the computer.Check Task manager to make sure there are no programs using up most of the CPU.if nothing running system idle process should be showing about 96% and that it normal. If anti-virus is running a scan at start up change it to a time when you want it to run.

Now i am Stuck in the middle of nowhere Plzz some one Help me Out.....

Answer:Installing WIN 7 on DELL INSPIRON 6400

Can you trigger the Dell Recovery partition to return your computer to factory condition in order to Update BIOS?

If Recovery partition will not run using cNTRL + f11 or whatever key combination they tell you to use, then you have nothing to lose and can wipe the HD which might stop one of the utility/boot partitions from interfering with install.

Boot Windows 7 install DVD Repair console or Repair CD, choose Command Line, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (replace # with Windows 7 HD)
CLEAN ALL (zeroes HD for deepest clean, takes about an hour per 320gb, drop "all" if you want shorter)
EXIT

Now boot back into the installer to attempt Custom install, using Drive Options to create New partition and Format.

Try also removing all but 2gb of RAM to try install, reset the CMOS: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe.../clearcmos.htm What is the SATA controller setting? Try AHCI, then IDE.

Thanks,
Pizu

My sister's Dell Inspiron 6400 has a weird habit of randomly restarting without any error notifications. However, this is not happening when the computer is running in safe mode. My initial reaction because i didn't have much time to search around for the problem was to do a format and start again. This done the problem still persists. My second reaction was maybe heat and running speedfan I'm getting the following temperatures:

HD0: 44C
Temp1: 63C
Core 0: 44C
Core 1: 48C

Temp1 seems a little high to me but is it high enough to trigger a restart?

This has really stumped me any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 random restarts

Yes, over heating will cause restarts. Check in the Bios for temps and voltage as well. Blow out all fans with compressed air especially the processor fan and heat sync.

Sounds like a great machine at a good price. Usually they are pretty close on the shipping estimates. As a rule I never get an extended warranty, but in the case of a $1300+ laptop I would consider it.

Hi All

Im running Windows Vista. The original battery wouldnt hold charge and could only use while AC adaptor was plugged in. Since then I bought a non original replacement battery and the system does not recognise it. I have tried closing the UAC and downloading the BIOS off Dell Support but for some reason the battery is still not charging and the battery indicator flashes from red to green.... On start up it displays that it does not recognise the battery and to continue have to hit the f1 key. I have also tried reseating the battery but to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and it seems to be giving a false reading on the battery charge.

Right now there is a battery connected but the power meter indicates that there is no battery. The first battery i had was working fine before it suddenly would not charge beyond 5% or less. Since it was over a year old I got a new battery which worked fine for a few days containing almost a 3hr charge. Suddenly it dropped down to 5% (orange light blinking) and sometimes indicated that there is no battery present.

I presume this is a motherboard/bios issue rather than the battery.

Any advice/ suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Today I impulsively reformatted my laptop without properly looking into steps that would need to be taken to get it up and running again. I don't expect any sympathy, I screwed this up and I take responsibility for it, but I'm just hoping there might be a way to undo the damage I did.

Basically after months of battling with random browser crashes (on all browsers I tried, Firefox/IE7/Chrome/Safari) I was nearly at my wit's end with how much I could take my laptop inconveniencing me before I tossed it out the window (seriously.) Today was the worst of the worst, I installed nothing new, I was just browsing like usual and suddenly, every site I tried to go to gave me this:

The connection to the server at [address] was interrupted while the page was loading.

This was on Firefox. It just instantly went to this page, it made no effort to load. Third party applications like AIM didn't work, but for some reason Gmail did. "Gmail.com" didn't work. Neither did my Gmail bookmark. But in Firefox I have this little Gmail extension that keeps a button in the lower right hand corner of the browser and lets me know when I have something in my inbox. I forget the name, exactly. But for some reason that would load fine, but I could not get to anything else. Also, every other computer in the house was working perfectly.

I ran Norton Antivirus (nothing) and Spybot S&D which found more spyware than it usually does, including two Trojans and a keylogger. This made me ne... Read more

Here are the drivers for your laptop. From what it looks like - it's the same drivers for my laptop (E1505).
http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid=

First - you want to install the chipset drivers. (Intel) You will need to download them from another PC and transfer them with a blank CD or flash drive or any other kind of removable device.

After that - you can pretty much install any drivers you want in any order. Just check Device Manager on your PC and anything with a yellow question mark or exclamation point will let you know what drivers you still need.

Once you have the chipset drivers - I would go with the network drivers to atleast get you back up and running on the internet. Then you can download all the other drivers from the correct PC.

Hope this helps!

Lately I have been getting BSOD on a old but reliable Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. The BSOD message I get is "Driver Power State failure". It does not happen regularly or follow a pattern. It is random (but follows Murphy's law and happens when I have not saved an important document

Any help will be appreciated.

Perfmon.html and Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2.zip file is attached as a single .zip package.

Answer:Occasional BSOD on Dell Inspiron 6400

No DMP included in upload try this method.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. If empty (or non existent) please look in the following folders. C:\windows (the dmp should be called memory.dmp), and C:\windows\LiveKernelReports\Watchdog.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).

Hi,
I wandered if it is at all possible for me to purchase a Blu-Ray internal optical drive for my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop?
If so would I need to change the drive bezel in order to install it?
Also another question with the Dell Inspiron 6400.....
I am looking to fit an SSD inside of the machine rather than the standard conventional hard drive that is already installed, is this possible?
Many thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 Blu-Ray drive installation + SSD

You can use a standard 2.5" SATA SSD, but will need a shim to mount it (SSDs are all 7 mm in height;  the carrier in your system is designed for a 9.5 mm drive).  Crucial supplies the shim with most drives -- others may not.
That said, your system won't be able to fully use an SSD's bandwidth -- you'll never see the full throughput because of the advanced age of the system and limitations of the chipset.  Make sure you're running Windows 7 or newer as well - XP doesn't work well with SSDs.
As for Blu-Ray, if it's for data storage, you can use an external drive.  I wouldn't bother with an internal -- they generate quite a bit of heat the system may not handle.  If you're thinking of using a BluRay for movies, forget it on this system  - the video chip is just too weak to handle BluRay playback.

Hi, I have been helping a friend to remove unnecessary software from her Dell pc. Since I did this it stalls at the 'welcome' screen after she inputs her password. If I press Ctrl/alt/del briefly it will continue to load as normal. I have unchecked and stopped various programmes that might be slowing it up eg java jusched.exe, adobe updater, and removed others that are not needed such as Works, orange preload, roxio, quickset, net waiting. The hard drive seems to run very slowly. I have also installed and run ccleaner and eusing reg cleaner, which I have used on my own machine for some time.

It has Hijackthis on the machine, but I am not sure how to upload a log to this site, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A few days back a thick pink band started appearing on my dell lcd. This caused my pictures to appear bad, but i was still using the laptop. A few days later the laptop screen started displaying poor artifacts, flickering and blanked out after a while. All through when connected to an external montor the display was perfect.

Today i replaced the LCD, inverter and video cable with those i pulled from another working inspiron e1505 (my friend's).

While the pink band is gone on my e1505, the poor display artifact, flicker and blanking out continues.
When i boot up the Dell logo will appear some times and the display will flicker all the way till i land on the page where i select the log in user. Once i select the user and land on the desktop and after a while the screen will blank out. All through the picture i seen on the lcd is of poor quality.

The display is perfect on external monitor even now.

Here are some details about my laptop.

The old LCD was an AU OPTRONICS B154EW01 15.4 LCD

Hi,

I've been kindly helped on this forum before and am hoping i might get some help again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 which is, and always has, run very slowly. I know this is not a high spec machine, but the computer is used purely for word processing and web surfing.

I have uninstalled McAfee and installed Avira which found only 1 warning. I also installed MWB antimalware which found a number a suspicious files which were removed. Then i downloaded defraggler which told me the drive was 44% defragmented. It has since been defragmented.

I am only today noticing that the drive is partitioned, which isn't necessary for the owner, so if someone could also tell me how to undo that. My main worry, however, is that there must be some kind of malware on the computer that is causing this speed issue. I have disabled as many unneccesary startup procceses as i safely could but it is very slow on startup and program loading.

Below i have attached the HJT log and would very much appreciate anyone's help. Thanks.

Okay, so I'm having problems starting up my dell inspiron 6400. I'm trying to convert it into a touch screen because its my old laptop, but I haven't even started that yet. My power adapter was bad and the computer would start up before, but the power button was sometimes act strange and would take a few pushes to start up, but some other times it would start up immediately. So my computer was already telling me that I had a bad charger, which had exposed wire. So I immediately thought that getting a new charger would take care of the problem. Now I got a new power adapter, and new battery and it wont start up. The battery charged normally with the green light and then shut off when fully charged. I have no indications of the new power supply being bad at all. I can press the media direct button for dell and it starts right up immediately. So I know that the new power supply and the new battery is good. I can run that just fine with no problems. I fell the power button and it feels just fine. So what should I do? My power button is on the same board that the other media direct button is on. So I would have no intentions on thinking that there is anything wrong with the board. Plus my other question would be that. Is there any possible way someone could hack into your computer and somehow prevent it from turning on like this? Whether through the web or in person at the computer. I know a few people who would find this very funny to play a practical joke on me. C... Read more

My Inspiron laptop has been working fine for me for the past year or so, I decided to back up my files on a Lacie external hard drive and sought after a way to reformat without using the vista cd (b/c dell never sent me a copy from the factory).

In the Recovery Drive (D i found the option PCRESTORE under Tools folder. The option was everything I needed but when I ran it i would get an Error message without text. This message pops up after only a second of the wipeout process. I cannot find the file pcrestore anyone on the net and I'm not knowledgeable enough about computers to know wtf it's doing that.

Any input on how to just reformat my laptop w/o cd or to get prestore back operational would be great! Thanks ahead of time!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 System restore

That restore has to be run from the pre bios, use F8 after restart at the Dell logo screen to use PC restore.

Using any other method to install XP or Vista will break the PC restore feature on a Dell.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400

When I turn it on I see the usual initial screen; the windows logo and the loading bar below it. Then the screen turns off. (a bit like hibernation)

If I leave it there I eventually hear the usual sound of windows loading up that I would be familiar with when one reaches the desktop stage after startup.
At this point if I close down the laptop and open it back up, the screen lights up and displays the screen that usually comes up when someone reactivates a turned-on laptop(blue screen with the button in the middle and the account name and status:locked). However the entire screen is slightly off in colour. But before I can click the button to unlock the account the screen goes black again.

So that's what's happening all the time now. Initially I had been using the laptop and it was working fine. Then left the room. Then returned and was looking at the screen not touching the cursor and the computer went black like it would if no user had been inputting into it. So the screen going black seemed normal at first. But since that occurred I have not been able to interface with the computer.

SO the computer seems to be working and the screen can display. But it keeps going black. As if the computer keeps thinking its time to hibernate.

I looked at the dell site about opening it up and i read posts about other people opening their laptop to fix issues with screen. I'm not sure what I'd be looking for though.

I have a Dell inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005 with a Sigmatel STAC 9200 sound card. While talking on Yahoo messenger with voice the microphone ( Logitech Desktop microphone) voulme goes down automatically within a few seconds of starting the conversation and I have to bring the microphone right next to mouth. In the recording volume control panel the volume tab can be seen going down untill it touches the bottom. I have tested the recording system ( start- accessories- entertainment- sound recording) and it works fine. Have written to Yahoo - no reply so far. Dell say not a Hardware or Software problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 multimedia buttons for Itunes

multimedia keys on a keyboard normally have to have a driver installed to make them work. Yours may be activated by media player but itunes may not be able to use that driver. My multimedia keyboard came with a mini cd 'keyboard hotkey driver'

First post. Hi all!

Been trying to fix a laptop for a friend the past week & it's driven me nuts. It had no internet connection due to winsock corruption but no matter what i did i couldn't get the headings down to 10 in msinfo32 -> Components -> Network -> Protocol.

Gave up & reinstalled a new XP Media Centre OS profile from the installation cd so that it gives them the option of using the old OS profile to use files & new one for internet access. After installing the drivers I'm now getting a yellow question mark in Device Manager beside Other devices & yellow question mark with a yellow exclamation mark inside it beside the following:

Base System Device

Base System Device

Base System Device

PCI Device

SM Bus Controller

Video Controller

Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

When i check msinfo32 -> Components -> Network -> Protocol i'm getting 16 headings, including MSAFD Pgm (Stream) & MSAFD Pgm (RDM). In regedit, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-> System -> ControlSet001 -> winsock ->Transport i'm seeing something called RMCAST.

Here's my HijackThis log file:

I plugged in my dead(battery needing charged) laptop only to have the power adapter start making a high pitched whinny sound. The green light will not light up on the box. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? If there is no way to get it back in working order, does anyone know of a cheap and good place to find a new one? And how do I tell if its actually the one I need? My power adapter says its part of the PA 10 Family, It also states 100-240v-1.5a, Output is DC 19.5v 4.62a. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my son watches movies on my laptop and is very upset that I can't get it working. Thank you so much in advance.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400. I can't find any display drivers for it on dell website. the default driver by winxp gives me resolutions of 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768.

Can anyone help me get the right and a better resolution? thnx

Answer:Solved: Dell Inspiron 6400 display driver plz

Dell lists several video options for a 6400. If you don't know which particular video card yours has then you can just try each until you get the correct one. (if you try installing a driver for a card that isn't there it will tell you). I'd suggest starting with the Intel first then the ATI .. if neither of those work try the nVidia.. Go here to get them..

Yesterday while playing World of Warcraft my laptop experienced a blue screen and error message saying something about memory parity error. Afterwards when I restarted my laptop I saw not one display but four identical displays one in each corner of the screen along with verticle bars on the screen.

Problem:

|||||||||||@|||||||||| |||||||||||@|||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||| ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|||||||||||@|||||||||| |||||||||||@|||||||||

Normally:

edit: the image i meant to show doesnt show up correctly

When I tried to boot normally, after the windows loading screen, it just restarts again.
When I tried to boot in safe mode it worked but I still had 4 identical displays.

After taking apart my laptop and inspecting the lcd screen and the video card and then putting it back together I turned it on and now every time time I boot up it goes to MediaDirect loading screen and after that I get a blue screen error.

O.S.:Windows Vista Home Premium
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 7300 or 7400 idk.

Please help me with my problem, is there something wrong with the LCD screen or video card, is it something I can fix? I've tried googling this but no one else has experienced this quad display problem.

Greetings, I am a newbie to the forum and am here looking for advice on an increasingly annoying/worrying problem to do with the worm.win32.netsky virus.
Since Saturday I have made various attempts to boot my Inspiron 6400 (running Win Xp SP2) using normal boot up, safe mode & last known good configuration, etc etc.

Up until this morning I kept receiving the Spyware Alert! warning message just as my peronsal settings are loading telling me how bad this virus is and what it can do...but when I click the Ok button (the only option available), nothing happened.
When trying to boot in any type of Safe Mode I only receive a Blue Screen with no errors except for "-?" displayed in the top right hand corner of the screen.
I have read plenty of solutions for actually removing the virus with various tools/utilites on lots of sites but unless I can actually get my laptop to boot I won't be able to run any of the solutions! I should also say that when I was successful in booting up normally (just ONCE mind you!) I was unable to get Task Manager to initiate (Administrator has closed it), I was able to gain access to the net but when I tried to click on any sites or lniks I was immediately directed to some random site selling chinese tvs or some such nonsense. So I have now dowlnloaded a few programs in work to a cd which seem to have been successful for people in removing the virus. However, I now have a new issue when trying to boot up...

Despite only crea... Read more

This dell has two OS installed Windows and Linux. I thought it would be a routine LCD inverter replacement. Dim picture? Ok I have to replace the inverter. After install the inverter I start testing and boot it up everything is ok in Linux. Now this is a weird one. I did tried to boot up in Windows everything looks ok until it logs in Windows then goes dim. I did try many times same thing. It does it in exact precise time in the boot like it is a driver or a glitch in the next step of boot. What I noticed next thing I did plug in the external monitor and both lite up like they suppose to and works as well like there is no problem at all. Unplug external monitor dim again. Boots in Linus again no problem at all. I have never seen or heard of a problem like this. Could it be a driver? But it worked before the inverter failure.

Hello all. Pretty simple question. Quick back story, have a 2006 Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop...was not charging battery... technician said it's not a DC jack issue (he put in a new one)...it is the section of the motherboard where the DC jack is that does not "know" when the adapter is plugged in.

So with that said, I want to take a crack at replacing the motherboard (I know I am crazy). Is there a specific model # of a motherboard that I need to look up or how does that work? If a model # is needed, where would that info be located. I am hoping the info is not in the laptop because it's dead. Thank you for your help...

Hey GuysI bought my laptop not too long ago to replace my old, and relatively crap Desktop. It has tons of ram and a fairly decent processor, but lacks a Video card, so pretty much every modern game I play lags tons.Does anybody know if it is possible to install a video card in this type of laptop? Cheers!

Answer:Putting a video card in a Dell - Inspiron 6400?

I would say no most laptops use onboard graphics. If you want to play games in the high sec then you will have to pay above £800 to over £1000 for a high spec laptop.

Hi folks, I have a Dell Insp 6400 and on boot I get a blue scren with horizontal lines scrolling. I have run the LCD BIST test and get an error code 2000-0333 and a message 'Graphics test timed out waiting for keyboard response'. I ran a diagnostics on the keyoard and all passed except I could not complete the key sequence test, the 'windows' key was not recognised and the only option for the layout on the laptop was the European 88 key, 103 key compatible. I have looked at the Dell site with a view to contacting them but get no joy. Any ideas?

I have just got my laptop and bar the upgrade to 1440x900 screen I am happy with it. The draw back is actually the screen which is a glossy unit. Unfortuantely, there are reflections in any natural light around (or in the office), especially when running on the battery as there is far less backlight. I tried to adjust it to the best quality when using battery but to no avail. When I plug AC adaptor is much better but I did not buy a laptop to sit with it at my desk all the time. What can I do? I have started thinking to send a laptop back as there was no single word on the Dell's website that this panel is a glossy one. And as far as I am concerned, I have not seen Dell's glossy LCDs anywhere. Even in the office, normal desktop panels have matte finish as they are not that reflective. May be there is a filter that I could stick to the panel that could help, as this really gives me headaches and eye strain. I am seriously frustrated.

Hello everybody

I've done something really stupid. After problems with my laptop yesterday (windows Vista Home Premium) when it would no longer boot I accidentally disrupted the dell restore process (from F8 on boot up) and lost some files. Being the extremely impatient person that I am I decided to load XP pro from my desktop installation disk so that I could access the recovery partition.
At the moment my laptop thinks its a desktop (on XP pro) the recovery partition is intact, I can see the recovery partition but cannot get to it to restore it as now if I reboot F8 no longer gives me the restore option. I have created a vista recovery disk and when I try the restore option from there it says it can't find any image to restore. I can get to command prompt with the recovery dvd does anybody know if it's possible to restore from the command prompt ?????

Hi people, following recent issue where I had to completely wipe my grandads laptop and replace it with a different version of Windows XP I have run into problems with the wireless. The problem is that when I turn the laptop on its fine, I can connect to the internet and surf. however, after about 30-60mins of wireless use, it cuts out, the device turns off and dissappears meaning that I can't enable it again. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them again but doing this via the Windows device manager causes it to crash whilst removing the drivers. I am currently trying to install the drivers using the Intel driver package I found online which is taking a while. When I did the reinstall I used the Dell driver discs which originally came with the laptop to install all the drivers required by the detected hardware. The laptop works fine off ethernet. Is there anything i am missing?

The laptop is a Dell inspiron 6400 with WinXP Home Edition installed, it also has Service pack 3

The specs of the laptop are as follows:

Intel Core 2 CPU
T5500 @ 1.66GHz
1.66GHz, 0.99GB of RAM

The network adapters installed on this PC include:
Broadcom 440x 10/100 Intergrated Controller
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
and the standard 1394 adapter

Any help would be appreciated as I haven't the fogiest clue whats going on And dell doesn#t have the best software to diagnose the problem

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is 13 months old - has Windows Vista Home Basic Edition. My grandson tried to uninstall Vista and replace with XP. It didn't work so I reinstalled Vista HB. I have a 19 GB folder "Windows.old" that I don't want. I don't find where I can custom an install without having that file. Help?

Answer:Clean Install Vista Home Basic On Dell Inspiron 6400

Windows.old is a backup of the old OS (in this case, it's probably the XP installation). I'd suggest exploring it first to see if it contains anything that you want - then delete it to reclaim the space on your system. Also, run a defrag after deleting it so that they system will effectively utilize the space right away.

I have the exact same laptop (minus the SSD) and ran into the same issue.

It has been a great laptop for 10 years so I would love to be able to move from Windows 8.1 to 10 so that all my pcs will be on the same OS for networking purposes.

I don't understand how a video driver that was not certified for 8.1 but ran okay (much better than the original Vista driver!!) is now blocking the install of Windows 10. :-(

Hi All,

I having a problem with this laptop that when I go the search screen, it shows the puppy dog, and I can make the tail wag, but it doesn't show any options to search for anything.

System restore will start up and it's blank. Same sort of thing.

Windows updates, also goes blank when I run it (I can do them manually).

When I go to look at user accounts, it's blank too.

I ran Spybot S&D on it, and it seems okay.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 6400 won't allow searching,system restore, windows updates

click start, run, type cmd, typed sfc /scannow. You will need you xp cd for this if it finds any errors. If that doesn't solve the issue post back.

I'm working on another friends computer and this one seems to be working well. It boots up fast and doesn't have a lot of clutter. If the computer is idle, it seems to be fine. But I did some CPU torture tests and it seems like if there's a significant amount of CPU load the computer will freeze up and start emitting a faint but fast beeping sound coming from the right side.

When I ran the CPU torture test and monitored the temps, it seemed to stay at about 56C on both cores the whole time (about 20 minutes) until the screen saver came on and then a few minutes later it froze. 56C isn't that high as far as I know right?

I also installed ActiveSMART to check the HDD integrity. It seemed to be fine as well. Disk health and Performance were good and the temp was steady at 39C which was in light yellow.

My friend said that recently she reinstalled windows so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with system files.

What could the beeping be? What should my next step be?

Edit: The whole time I was testing the laptop was not connected to the internet.

Its quite possible the cards died, and yes they usually replaceable.
