When I try to run a backup it always stops around half way with a message "Backup Now EZ Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then I get the message "Error signature SZAppName: BackupNowEZS vr.exe szAppVer:

Hey all. This has got to be some sort of OS problem or something... When trying to launch PageMaker7 - which I've used on this computer for quite some time - it now pops up that aggravating "PM has encountered a problem and has to close" window before the program ever finishes loading. I uninstalled both PM6.5 and PM7, re-installed them, tried restoring my computer to an earlier date - just about everything I can think of to repair the problem. It still won't run. I'm running XP home. Could this be something interfering with the "cooltype.dll" module? When I click on details for what is in the failure, that file is mentioned. Anyone (PLEASE) out there have any thoughts? Thanks!!

In MS Works Calendar, when I attempt to enter new information an error box opens stating that the program "has encountered a problem and has to close." An Application Error box states: 'The instruction at "0x65fbf791" referenced memory at "0x00000008". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terrminate the program.'

I tried removing and reinstalling MSWorks but was unsuccessful in correcting the problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

.... dialup.... you have my sympathy.  Do you have SP2 (Service Pack 2) for Windows XP installed?  What protections are you using against viruses and spyware?Have you been able insert pictures in the past?  I gather you're getting a glimpse of this panel for inserting a picture but it's faulty:Is that the panel you're referring to?

Last night a popup message from McAfee told me that Dell Security center was trying to access the internet. I was in the midst of downloading and reading email, and being a dummy, I gave one-time permission.

Soon afterward, I began to suspect a virus, as I received a virus notification popup and an email from my ISP re: a deleted virus. As I was deleting items from my inbox, Outlook Express froze. I tried restarting, and OE hangs on the inbox and hogs 96%+ system resources.

This morning, my ISP program showed an error and my Antivirus was corrupted. I did a system restore and redownloaded the antivirus, which solved my problem with getting on the 'net. I've scanned and come up with nothing and downloaded a special scan and remove tool (Stinger) from McAfee for the virus it warned me about yesterday....Sober, I think. But still, OE hangs up on the Inbox and I can't read or remove or access the toolbar. It says "no email selected."

Any ideas?

I use the "Outlook Express" for my email for years, no problem.
I had been using ISP for my email server and have my own email account set up, so far so good.
I had checked the box "delete from mail server after deleting from trash" and it works out just good. This is because, no need to log-on the mail server each time to clean up the read emails by hand, this way could release enough space for receiving email. Is because the ISP charge on over-quota space for emails, or just will block excess emails over the allowed space.
The problem started, when a friend told me could set the email folder away from the hard-drive C, I set it as per his suggestion. Then, the "auto-cleaning function" stopped performing.
I asked the ISP and was told because "Outlook Express" is designed by Mircosoft Inc. so they could not help.
Then, I set it back to the "defaulted folder", but the function could not be recovered.
This is quite annoying that I have to log-on the email server and clean up the emails daily by hand.

Within the past 2 weeks, I've got a issues that I am not able to figure out how to fix (acutally driving me a bit over the edge). Reply messages in my Inbox are coming in the same folder from recipients with a "+" next to them. In order to see messages, I click on the "+". Never happened before, and I've been using Outlook Express for years. I have not upgraded OE, no setting change on my part. My goal is to put back how it's always been, replies coming in there on message, not within another. Hope that makes sense. I will attempt to include a snapshot. I will eventually uninstall and reinstall, but really don't want to worry about losing mail and having to redo address book, etc. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks..

Seems like you may have inadvertently changed the setting in OE for Current View. Click on View (on the top menu), Current View, and then unselect Group Messages by Conversation, assuming it is currently selected.

Please help!

For the second time in recent months I have had a problem with lost messages. On Friday night when I attempted to shut down my PC, suddenly I received an onscreen message box indicating that my messages were being "compacted." I have Win XP Pro, Service Pack 2 and use Outlook Express.

Someone told me that Win XP Pro with SP 2 automaticallly gives a prompt after 100 closings of OE, asking if you want to compact your messages. The strange thing is that both times I've had this problem, I was never given a prompt. In other words, the compacting started on its own, which was completely unexpected. First I lost my Inbox messages; next, I lost my Sent Items. Is this normal? Is this an issue only with OE? If so, maybe I should change to another e-mail program.

In the past I used both Macallan and DBXtract in an attempt to retrieve my lost messages, but had not success with either program. Someone had given me instructions for these programs, but I had trouble following them. Still, I'm not sure if either of them would help retrieve my messages.

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is really "normal" or if it may perhaps be the result of a virus problem I had recently. I am totally confused by what is happening, and I have no clue yet as to how to either prevent or avoid it.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

Hello Friends,

I use outlook express 6 for checking my emails.

I am not able to view any attachment sent to my email. Whenever I open a mail containing an attachment I get the following message

" OE removed access to the unsafe attachments in your mail: filename "

Though I am able to see the text in the message. But I am not getting the attachment file. All the emails having attachment show the same above message. I am attaching a screeshot of the error.

Please help me in rectifying the error.

Untick the option "Prevent any attachments from being opened or saved that might............" or words to that effect.

Can't be exact as I never use OE, but the option is enabled by default.

Hi, i really hope u guys can help me.
My problem is when i "CC" mail to my receipients,
those emails that i fill in the "CC" field don't show, instead each of the email "CC"ed turns into the "TO" field.

whenever i clicked on a large video file in explorer (running xp sp2 on inspiron 6000), explorer would crash. i found a tip online to run "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and that fixed the problem completely.

however, this fix created a new problem - - now all the info that used to be under "artist" or "album" is gone! any fix? "date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my mp3 folders by artist, and now it does me no good.

by the way, when i now click on an mp3's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the artist/album info is missing from there too.

from doing a search, i see that the way to undo the original fix is to run "regsvr32 shmedia.dll", but then i think i will have errors with large avi's.

so, any other fix?

Of late, I've been getting a slew of error messages
and the most scary was the windows file protection one. It all began after I installed avast which started del-
eting files as though there was no tomorrow. Then I downloaded and installed Lenovo ThinkVantage
Toolbox which performed a systems check (I have attached it). I had to uninstall it because of frequent

I think you should get help in the Malware forum. When I tried to open the test results Avira detected a virus. The errors you have reported all relate to file damage which could be caused by an infection.

I have the complete Office XP Suite. When I satrt Word, I get the following message,"...Microsoft Word has encountered a problem & needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I am then asked to load Word in safemode, which is done. Word is functional here. This never changes, so short of re-installing Word to correct the error message, any suggestions? Also if I have to re-install Word, how do I deal with the fix's also installed. Is there a unistall program from MS to get a clean uninsatll on Office which also uinstalls the fix's? When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

The other day I realised I hadn't seen the Outlook Express 'compact messages' pop-up for some time. Sure enough, when I checked my recycle bin, the most recent bak files were at least 3 weeks old when I usually have to compact once a weekish. I did a manual compact and this worked ok. But, curious, I've been keeping an eye on the compact count check in the registry to see what happens when it reached the 100 mark. And it never reaches the 100 mark. The highest I've seen it is at 19, when suddenly it reverts to zero, seemingly of its own free will. Yesterday it was reading 5 and then when I checked an hour later expecting to see 7 or 8, it was reading 2! Needless to say, I don't touch anything in the registry, - just look.
I've been Googling this but I can't see any references to this particular behaviour anywhere. As I said, I can compact manually but I'd prefer not to have to. I am a bit worried that my OE might be corrupted. Any ideas anyone?

Just when you think you've heard everything, I must say that's a new one on me.

Compacting is Identity specific, so I would think the problem would be in your current Identity (of course a lot of people would look at your problem as a solution to out of control compacting ).
You could try creating a new Identity and see if it does the same thing.
If the compacting works properly in the new one, Import your mail from the old Identity.

I have thousands of emails in my Outlook Express. (I need to archive all my email.) I did clean up alot of it, but still thousands in there. OE periodically asks me to "compact folders to free up space". When I do so, it dumps all the .bak files into the recycle bin. (OE back up files). One day, in Sept 2010, after it compacted the folders, I found that I was missing hundreds of emails in my "sent" folder, (only the sent folder, all others were intact),  but only from May to Sept 2010. The "sent items.bak" file was in the recycle bin along with all other .bak files. I saved that file in a folder. Someone told me to rename it ".dbx" and restore it. I have not yet done so as I am wondering if it would duplicate ALL THE SENT MAIL, not just from May to Sept 2010. In any event, why is it doing this every time it compacts folders? Is that because I have too much email archived in OE folders? (If I follow the path to the store folder it shows only the dbx files, not any bak files. I have not emptied the recycle bin of these files as I don't know if I need to restore them.

is it possible to set up an 'undisclosed recipients' email group in outlook 6? and if so, how? i've taken a look through the 'help' topics index, but don't seem to be able to find anthing related to my query.

Somehow I've lost the file association between .htm/.html and IE/Firefox. Firefox is my default browser, but when I click on an html link in an email (Outlook Express) the window that opens is "Compaq Owners Documents," rather than a Firefox window. I've tried re-installing Firefox with no improvement. This APPEARS to have begun right after I installed IE7 Beta (although I seldom use the program). Firefox operation seems to be normal otherwise. Any ideas how I should track this down? Thanks --

Answer:Clicking on a link in Outlook Express brings up "Owners Documents"

Don't know if this will help or not.

Open your Control Panel, double click on Folder Options, review all your settings. Pay attention to the tab File Types. Review all of the File Extension Types. Look for the file extension that you are having problems with. Click on the Advanced button to review the settings. You may find your problem by accident like I did once. If not, I'm sure some of the experienced members will be able to help.

Im not sure if this will completely take care of the problem listed by the OP, bu when i searched Google for "disable outlook in firefox" that thread was the first thing that popped up. I have found out how to change the mailto: action in firefox (3.5.7) to stop outlook from opening.

find "mailto" in content type column, and click the drop down box in the action column. There you can select from several mail clients including gmail.

This same procedure can be used to select which application opens most relivent file types.

My friend is having a strange problem with their computer. They are using Windows XP Home Edition. After composing a new email in Outlook Express, and hitting the send button. The Install wizard pops up as if something is being installed on the computer, and then a second window pops up with a message (sorry I don't have the exact wording) relating to Microsoft Picture It! Stating that the file is located on a disc or other removable media. It's as if Microsoft Picture It! is attempting to install. All of these windows can be canceled and closed. The email will be sent as usual.

They are using Norton anti-virus software, which is up do date. We also ran Avast virus cleaner. The computer appears to be free of viruses. We tried reinstalling IE and OE, but it didn't help. I was thinking about unistalling both IE and OE, and then reinstalling to see if that would correct the problem.

What would cause something this weird? I have never run across anything like this before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok, so I cleaned up all the old programs that I do not use any longer and deleted them from the control panel, add/remove programs, rebooted and about a day or so tried to open up outlook express. the program opened up but I can not "Expand" an email by double cliking it OR I can not even reply to an email as I get the attached screen shots of the error messages I recieve.

I did have this problem a while back but for the life of me I can not remember how it was corrected.

Can someone reccomend a "Web-Based" Email site .... (ie Yahoo, Excite etc.) that can accept and display all of the attachment and goodies that OUTLOOK EXPRESS can generate?

For instance... if I send Email to my friend at Yahoo and I use a really cool stationary background she can only view the background as a seperate attachment.

Are there any web-based Email accounts that will view these backgrounds as part of the email without extra downloading? Even Actually... even WEB-TV can handle most of OUTLOOKS goodies, yet I have yet to find a web-based Email client that can.

I am getting ready to install windows 98 again on my new system, and I'd rather not have to re-enter all my email addresses into the address book. Anyone know how to save this file? I've checked out several files marked "address book," but none of them seem to store my addresses.

I am not postitive but i think they are saved in .WAB or .CVS files. With OE open you can go to files>export>address book and i think that it can be saved to a floppy. I tried it as a .cvs(comma separated values) and saved it to floppy which when opened looked like an Excel file. I tried the other option but had no option i could see to save it to a floppy and even though it said it was exported, i dont know where it went.

I am wondering if I can save my outlook express "message rules" settings that I've so painstakingly and time-consumingly set. I am getting ready to re-install and I'd rather not have to re-do it all when I set up the new system. I couldn't find a specific folder for "rules" under outlook express....any ideas?

I have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.

On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

I am not able to work in windows 2000 because of this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Meaning that you created a new User Account and the L key still persists in starting Outlook Express?

It is definitely the On Screen Keyboard.

Ugh, tried to duplicate your problem and I was successful!
My keys affected were e, f, l, m, r
Outlook Express was not opened with the L key, it went to the Welcome Screen!

On the On Screen Keyboard, I clicked the key that looks kind of like a calculator, between the Win Key and the Ctrl key.
Right side of the Space bar.

I don't know if I am out of the woods yet.
Until the On Screen keyboard actually let me type in this window, I clicked that key about four times.

Let us know what happens.

My operating system is Windows XP and my email program is Outlook Express. It's always worked fine, until about two weeks ago, when I try to delete mail in my Inbox, they don't delete. When I click the "delete" button, it appears to mash down like it's supposed to, but nothing happens. I tried going to the "" site to install their IE6 Service Pack, but got the message "Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this computer. Setup cannot continue." Any ideas?

I use OE and Gmail, which is configured to display through my Outlook Express details page. Everything's always worked smoothly until a couple of weeks ago. Now, perhaps one in about every half dozen attempts, when I click "Send Receive", it freezes/hangs on the "Securing" part of the set up before it displays any messages. It remains frozen for about 15-20 seconds then I get an error message. If I try again it usually works?? Can anyone help please?

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Whenever I click on a link in an email in Outlook Express 6, a Program Not Found dialog box opens up, and says Windows cannot find dustingforfingerprints (which I believe is some sort of blog thing one of my kids has), and it also says This program is needed for opening files of type 'URL: http protocol'. Then it prompts me to enter the location of dustingfingerprints. I guess it thinks this is the program to enter weblinks?

Have you tried to see if there are any bak files in the Recycle Bin:

Make sure Outlook Express is not running.
Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop .
Locate the ".bak" files corresponding to the Outlook Express folders you want to recover.
The ".bak" file will be named like the folder in Outlook Express.
To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
Click on the ".bak" file with the right mouse button.
Select Restore from the menu.
Locate the file in Windows explorer and open the folder it's contained in.
Drag and drop the ".dbx" file corresponding to the Outlook Express folder you want to recover to your Desktop.
In the Outlook Express store folder, click on the ".bak" file to be recovered with the right mouse button.
Select Rename from the menu.
Change the ".bak" file extension to ".dbx".
If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
Open Outlook Express.
If your emails have been recovered, delete the ".dbx" file you moved to the Desktop.

Also if you do not find the files in the above location search your computer for *.Bak

This should be a basic question but I could not find the answer in Outlook Express Help. Using Outlook Express. When I send out a group email, is there a way to just have the name of the group in the "TO" box, for instance "Friends" At present, Outlook Express spells out each and every email address and this upsets some recipients.

Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

David Einstein, San Francisco Chronicle "computer guru" has stated that when one "deletes" e-mail FROM the Deleted Items Folder, that instead of being finally deleted they go to a hidden subfolder. This is why, he states, periodically Outlook Express will put up a query-box asking whether one would like "old messages" to be compressed to save space. Einstein says that what actually is being asked, is for permission to delete, deleted items, finally and forever from the hidden deleted items folder.

That Einstein's statement is correct, is implied by the fact that un-intentionally deleted items, from the deleted items folder, can easily be restored. That "restore" comes, naturally, from the hidden subfolder. query is: What is the directory and file-name of that hidden subfolder?

I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6 to access my MSN email account. At times, when opening Outllook Express, it will not automatically search for my new messages. It says I am offline & asks me if I want to be online. I have to click on "Send/Receive Messages" to activate my search for new messages. If I restart my computer and then click on Outlook Express, it will automatically search my Inbox immediately, everytime. I went into options and I have the box checked that says "Send and Receive Messages at Startup". It seems Outlook Express isn't recognizing that I am always online. Any suggestions?

"Outlook Express" which has been my email program since Windows XP and up to Windows 8.1 disappeared when I uploaded Windows 10. This included all my saved emails and all my contacts. The replacement email program, which I assume is from Windows 10, is as useful as a eunuch.

Can someone tell me if my old "Outlook Express" is hiding somewhere on my computer or do I have to accept that it is gone? If it is still in my computer how do I bring it to the forefront? I should note that I am not particularly computer literate.

Oh the joy of PC carnage.

On Nov 4 my PC motherboard crashed and was shipped back to the manufacturer under warranty. My system, a P4 on Win XP was originally built in Australia with an Asus P4800S motherboard. Now that I live in the USA, it took some time for Asus to authorize the repair....but I digress.

Motherboard was reinstalled and all applications except Outlook Express 6 work. Outlook Express is "unable" to remember the outgoing mail settings after a 24 hours period. It remembers the incoming, but not the out, changing from to When I go into the account configuration and manually input it again, it still won't pick up my mail off the server. A reboot of the system doesn't help either, I physically have to delete the account settings and add new email settings, the same settings that were previously applied. It then picks up the backlog of mail.

I thought that McAfee may have not picked up a virus so I went to a system restore point prior to the motherboard failure. Alas, the entire PC it is unable to restore to any settings prior to the motherboard failure.

Suggestions on the email first before prophecies on the doom of my PC.

I send and receive e-mails on Outlook Express 5. When I receive an e-mail from an AOL user, and try to respond by clicking on "Reply", all the AOL receiver gets back is the letters yp. Does not happen with messages received from non-AOL users. Does not seem to be a virus. Looking for any ideas on how to solve the "yp" problem.

I'm using Win XP Home and subscribe to Microsoft's automatic updates and kind of trust Bill's kids not to corrupt anything in the process.

So the other day after an update session (Service Pact 3 maybe? ) When I restarted the computer OE was totally unavailable, desktop icon gone, couldn't find in "Programs". So I am wondering what happened. I did run a "find" for .dbx files and all the OE file catagories I had before came up as still existing but I can't access them without the main program, at least with my limited knowledge.

Should I try to reinstall OE 6? And where do I find it? Or what. I have had this computer for 4 or 5 years and lots of mail is stored in the OE files. I have a secondary question, if I ever do recover my old OE can I transfer some of the files to Word or some other program that I want to archive instead of burdening OE with them.

I have accessed my current e-mails thru my ISP since the disappearnce of OE but would sure like to have the other archive files available again.

Open the Run box, press the Windows Logo key and R.
Or use, Start > Run

Key in exactly:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
Click: OK

Outlook Express should start.
To restore the shortcut for Outlook Express:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Window Components (Left side of the Control Panel)
In the Add/Remove Window Components window, scroll down to Outlook Express.
If Outlook Express is checked, uncheck it.
Click Next then click Finish

Click the Add/Remove Window Components again, this time, place a check mark for Outlook Express.
Click Next then click Finish

A shortcut should now be on the Start menu, it will probably be at the end of the Start menu. From that shortcut, you can send it to the Desktop as a shortcut and drag the second shortcut to the Quick Launch bar, if desired.
Let us know if that works for you or not.

I messed up! Sometime back, I tried some stuff I shoulda left alone! It happened months ago, and I forget the details (yeah, I know, if I forget what I messed up, or how, then how can I ask for or expect any help!). Short version: MSIE v6, running under Windows XP home edition SP1 (yeah, yeah) no longer sees the existence of Outlook Express v6, which is still, indeed, fully installed on my puter. Trouble is, I can't go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and choose OE as my default e-mail reader, which I've been using for years now, since MSIE doesn't know it's there!

I've tried removing and reinstalling OE, from the Control Panel. The "remove" option takes only a fraction of second and then ends. Hard for me to believe it's really removing anything. So if it didn't, then reinstalling won't do anything cuz the "install" process, starting from one of MS's online sources of the original program, would only detect that OE is still on my hard drive, and would stop immediately. Indeed, that's what seems to happen, when I try reinstalling OE after trying the "remove" option in Control Panel.

I haven't tried reinstalling MSIE v6. And I sure don't want to have to go all the way back to something like format c: and using Dell's CDs to start all over again!

My Outlook Express opens and immediatly starts sending messages and won't recieve unless I hit stop and then click recieve. If I let it go on sending it takes forever then ends in error. I suppose that there must be a way to delete the outgoing message, whatever it may be, so Outlook won't keep trying to send it every time I open Outlook Express. Enable: Hidden files and folders:
Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders,
verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
uncheck Hide Extensions for known file types
Apply, OK, to save and close.


Start > Search > For Files or Folders
All Files and Folders
key in:
Look in: Local Drives
click the arrow for More Advanced Options
place a checkmark in:
Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
Click Search
Locate the Outbox.dbx file and rename it Outbox.old
Or just delete the Outbox.dbx file, Outlook Express will create a fresh new one.

You can also configure Outlook Express to NOT Send/Receive at startup.
Tools > Options > General tab
Uncheck: Send and receive messages at startup
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

Hello tech helper(s),

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am running XP on a vanilla PC, and have installed IE 7 and Outlook Express 6. I updated IE 7 just last night, to make sure that that is all in order.

All works except for one thing, and it's so frustrating! When I am in Outlook Express, with my Inbox populated by many messages, and I try to do a "Find Message" on that folder, all that happens is that I get a blank results window, regardless of what search criteria I select.

I searched the forum and found one relevant message from long ago, but the answer to that message is not helpful to me.

I've tried various antidotes. I could try to re-install Outlook Express, but doing so seems challenging. And I fear losing my Inbox messages altogether if I do that.

If you can give any advice, I'll appreciate that. In fact, I'm so desparate I'm willing to pay for some effective help.

Copy it somewhere - click on the copy to make sure it works.

Hi guys I work for an ISP and embarrassingly I am really stumped with this one. I have a customer using Outlook Express every he try's to compose an email OE try's to force him to create a contact and its annoying him. Every time he clicks send it comes up "no matches found" he is using XP I did a google search but only found information regarding this issue related to 98 and 95 none of the resolutions applied to XP.

Sadly my XP machine is out of action at the moment and I cant tinker with it, your help is much appreciated.


After 4 years with no answer, I hope this helps someone else and saves the obligatory 1/2 hour searching dead posts with no helpful solution (in 2 minutes flat).

HERE'S HOW TO 'FIX' THE 'NO ADDRESS FOUND' ERROR: (1.) Open Address book and simply double click on the faulty contact entry. (2.) The 'Properties' window should pop up, now click on 'name' tab and add a dash after the 'last' name field entry. The 'display' field should reflect the additional dash after the name. (3.) Now click 'OK' to save changes then close the address book. (4.) Now create a new message and begin typing the contact name which should auto-fill the name showing a dash after name. Now it should work, BUT the extra dash may be seen by the recipient. TRY ADDING A DIFFERENT CHARACTER AFTER THE NAME IF DASH LOOKS FUNNY. GOOD LUCK ----dUCKBILL

Hello: I have this problem quite often when downloading my email through Outlook Express. It always occurs at the start of the day, never during the day, although I do “Send/Receive” dozens of times a day.

My email appears to download normally, but then I get this error message:
<<Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: '', Server: '', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Can't open the message file - it's gone!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD>>>

Sometimes this message is followed by several more, beginning “Message number 2 could not be retrieved ...” and so on.

I know for sure of at least two recent emails which have been sent but which I’ve never received. Could this be why?

I have three questions:
1. What is this and can I fix it?
2. Can I stop it happening again?
3. Are the emails which couldn't be retrieved lost forever? Or is there any way I can read them, or at least find out who they came from, so I can ask for them to be re-sent?

(Actually, that’s about five questions, but what am I - a statistician?)

Win XP Home Ed; Outlook Express 6.0. Have two identities. Yesterday one of the identities began to not allow moving unwanted messages to the Delete folder. Also could not move them to any other existing folder.

Each time try to delete or move or drag and drop get the following error message: "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred."

Can delete emails by hitting the Shift-Delete keys but not desirable. Found that I can create a new folder and move or drag and drop to it and then delete the new folder but also not desirable.

Other identity functions normally.

Sounds like the inbox may be getting corrupted.

Move the messages you want to keep into a folder that is not a subfolder of the Inbox just in case something goes wrong or you have to end up deleting the inbox file.

Then make sure hidden files and file extensions are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files).

Then in Outlook Express in the identity having the problem, go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button. Once you know the exact location of the store folder that identity is using (there will be more than one with a long alphanumeric name so be sure you've got the exact name), close OE, navigate to it and delete the "folders.dbx" file. If that doesn't solve the problem, go back and delete the "inbox.dbx" file.

If you have to delete inbox.dbx, OE will open with a new, empty Inbox. Just move your saved messages back into it.

I've never seen this before I can't find any information on how to fix it.
Last night when I opened up Outlook Express it sucked down all the free memory on my computer and brought it to almost a stand still. I'm talking about aprox. 360 MB's of RAM..

When I start Outlook Express, I watch the ram and it goes steadily downward until it bottoms out and bounces around 0-5 MB free. I have about 20 seconds before it eats it all up.
After that I can't do anything until I can get the program shut down and everything returns to normal once the memory frees up.

I have A LOT of messages.. Over 100,000 in one account. I would venture a guess that I have about 250k total including Sent. I don't know if this matters but I thought I would bring it up.

I have scanned for virus' but I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any idea about this, or heard anything?

I've been trying to get my Outlook Express 5 to do a REPLY TO SENDER from
within a newsgroup without any success.
I have re-verified all setting, etc., as best I can with no luck.
Everything else seems to work fine.

Everything works just fine with OE, except the Reply-To-Sender from within a newsgroup.
You press the Send button, the cute icon shows the envelope moving, and that's that.
It never goes anywhere, and does Not appear in the Sent folder. No error messages.

Funny, I believe that it did work before I upgraded to OE 5 from OE 4, Also strange that I can send e-mails with OE from outside the Newsgroup format.

*I "think" I may have found a hint to the problem, but need more advice.

The page that opens up when you do a Reply To Sender from within a newsgroup
wants to send the message, apparently, via Outlook. I don't have Outlook
Eudora is my Default e-mailer.

It won't let me change from Outlook in the pull down box on the page that opens up after you press the Reply To Sender button; that's the only option that comes up, and I can't seem to change it.

I don't want to have to install or use Outlook.
Can't I get it to go thru/use Eudora (or my ISP's mail Server) without having Outlook installed?

How would I do this, if the page that opens up after hitting to reply to sender does not offer it as an option?

Does anyone know what it means when messages in the Sent Mail folder in Outlook Express have a header line "This message is being Watched"? This appears in a beige bar above the "From" line in the email. All my emails prior to 12/2/01 show this message, and none after that date show it -- and of course the Microsoft help site provided absolutely no information.

I have recently changed ISP to and I have set up outlook express to recieve my emails. I have gone thru' the internet wizard and set up my account on the "servers" box as my incoming mail (POP3) as The default setting was "".

I then click on "apply" and I think fine & dandy. But no, within about an hour the default setting "" has reared its ugly head again and thus my emails dont come thru'. What can I do to rectify this? Is it an ISP problem? Is it a Dell Computer problem? Or is it a Windows XP problem?

Greetings All,
I'm, or rather my Son, is having a Problem in Outllook Express 6.0. Apparently he's Tried to sent a "CD" (?), or large amount of Info ( Pics & Such ) to a Friend via "Yahoo". Now it's ( Sent Item ) seems to be Locked into a Non-Stop "Sending" mode. He got a message saying it was Too Big for the other end to Open.(?) Anyway, I've Tried to "Delete" it but can't. Does anyone know how to disable the popup button that appears when you close Outlook Express?

Launch OE,select Tools>Options>Connections tab. The check box option 2nd from the top is for automatic hang up. If selected, you get the dialog box to confirm the disconect.

Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP Home SP 3 messages have a "From" header, and there my email address is displayed. Due to this, it often happens that my just sent emails come straight back to ME! Is there a way to remove this "From" header, or is it there by default?
Help please anyone?

I have used Outlook Express for several years without any major complaints.

Now, however, for whatever reason, next to certain messages I find small "plus sign" boxes which allow me to expand and collapse conversations/threads, like in Newsgroups. For my e-mail set-up, I really don't care to have this function. I find it both disruptive and confusing. I liked it much better the way it was before when all my incoming messages appeared individually and precisely in chronological order. The way things are now, I often find it necessary to go back and click on "plus signs" to find new messages hidden underneath. In one thread I found a message which didn't even belong in that particular thread.

Using Outlook Express Tools I at least figured out how to automatically expand conversations rather than have them collapsed. I don't believe this solved my problem, though. I would like to get rid of the "plus signs" altogether.

Could someone please tell me how to return to the simpler set-up I once had?

Outlook Express hijacked my IMAP mail folder!! The story goes like this:

I recently switched hard drives and had to reinstall windows and all my apps. I didn't have my MS Office CDs at the time (my copies were at work) so I decided to temporarily use Outlook Express for email even though I don't normally use it. Well, I use an IMAP mail server and OE decided to rearrange all my IMAP folders into a new directory that it named "mail". Okay, weird, but all the messages seemed to be there. I decided nonetheless that I didn't like that very much, so I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and gave it a try. To my surprise, the "mail" folder created by OE seemed to be invisible and my original folders no longer existed. The next day, I installed Office and found that Outlook was also unable to see this mysterious "mail" folder, and again all my original folders were gone. I cofirmed all this throughout the process by logging onto my mail server directly (I have a web-based maintenance site I can log onto). Apparently, OE rendered my email folders useless to anything other than itself. What a piece of work.

I decided to use Thunderbird from now on, at least at home, where I was able to import all my mail from the local folders I created in OE, but I will NEVER run OE again much less use it for email. I guess I'm not asking for much help here since I worked everything out, but I felt the need to rant!

No kidding. OE blows.

IMAP is sensitive cuz the arrangement and naming of folders does vary and mail clients like their own format. But, leave it up to MS to implement it differently between OE and Outlook.

On my Main Identity (on my daughter's, secondary identity, everything is copasetic), when I double-click to open a mail in a new window or to compose a mail, the minimized window is fine, but the *maximized* window is offset down and to the right. This cannot be dragged or "pulled" on a corner or otherwise.

The only thing I can do with it is *restore* it (to the "minimized" state) or *close* it via the taskbar. There is no Move or Size option as there is with the minimized window.

Any help on how to restore this window to its correct position would be greatly appreciated.

Well I posted a little over a week ago about my computer shutting of months ago and having to add another powersupply box, then couldn't get my PC to boot all the way up, it kept completely locking up at certain points of the boot up process.  I attempted a system restore and even booting up in safe mode and always ended up locking up.  Don't know what I did, but I must have hooked up something wrong when I installed the new powersupply box but it's working now..but not great.   ANYWAYZZZ..getting on to the next problem... I have now.  Well it slows down a lot when running certain programs and now when I open Outlook and click on an email.. I don't want to open it just preview it in the preview pane, but just by clicking on it it randomly opens emails all the way.  Then when I go to delete them it sometimes delete 2 and 3 emails at a time..randomly again!  Even when going to newsgroups it randomly opens the posts in seperate windows.  I've done a virus scan.. no viruses, ran spyware cleaned that up.. any other suggestions?  I don't have a name "Brand" computer, this one was built for me, so there is no rescue disk and my ex took off the WINXP CD.. grr!!!!  any suggestions greatly appreaciated in advance!Beth

I'm using Windows XP - Outlook Exp. 6 for my E-mails. Have a new problem can't find the answer to. Everything is working O.K. but when I click on Sent items it does not open but freezes up and I have to close the whole Outlook. Another new thing is, that I keep getting daily spam mail in my box which is not even addressed to me, only to a variety of names vaguely similar to mine.
My IS provider does not think it is their mistake. I out ruled a virus with several scans. Anybody with similar problems ???

Recently, my email with Outlook Express (4.5) records only the number "19" immediately before the correct time, e.g. "194:55pm"; moreover, it has gone into all my folders and altered all the dates to "19" plus the time on old messages. Of course, the help systems online are silent regarding the "date sent" function. Any ideas? Thank you.

All of a sudden in the last week or so, I can't attach "My Pictures" in Outlook Express. I get the resizing box and the email ready for me to enter a "send to" address, but there is no picture in the "attach" line. Can anyone help me?

Hello all,

Recently, I have noticed that for most messages received, there is a paperclip icon in the Inbox which would indicate that there is an attachment to the message.

When I open the message, there are no attachments.

All I have done recently is uninstall Nortons Internet Security and install AVG Free antivirus and Windows defender. I had also installed and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Ewido Antispyware before finishing up with my AVG and Defender configuration.

Any help or explanation as to why this is happening would be appreciated.

Can anyone please tell me how I can change the way the date is shown for messages received/sent. By this I mean I would like the the day/month/year to be shown, as it is now it is month/day/year and it is slightly confusing as I do not know why this has started happening. I have looked at the settings/options etc but cannot see a way to change it. Any help much appreciated, Dojo


The only way I know of, is to change your Regional settings in the Control Panel.

Click Start/Control Panel/Change to classic view/click Regional and Language and change to a format you want.

I'm get this error ("msoe.dll could not be loaded") when I try to start it. Does anyone have an idea about why this would happen? The dll does exist in the dir.

Have you recently made any changes to your software? This behavior generally manifests itself after upgrading/downgrading/changing IE, OE, or installing certain service packs. It can also occur if you remove the Windows Address Boox (which OE requires).

I'm running Windows 98 on an 800MegHz computer, we are on Road Runner DSL. Two months ago I noticed that when accessing Outlook Express from the desk top or from "mail" within Road Runner, it took a full minute to even begin the program. It then took another minute to load the mail. Also noted that any and all searchs (Yahoo,Lycos,RR search) on the Web are very slow. When I put something in the search box, I can count on waiting a full minute. Page movement on the net is very fast...searchs are very slow. I've solved the mail problem....Yesterday I loaded just plain Outlook from Office. Mail now is lightning fast. Can someone help me with my search problem? Thanks. Wayne

This can be caused by a variety of problems but seems the most relavent one is spyware. If you go to you can download for free a program that searches your system & will eliminate it of spyware.
Go get Ad-aware & run that first...then update your virus scanner & run it as well.

Alright, so my base problem is that no program that uses DirectX works at all, they don't even start. My computer also seems not to be recognizing my graphics card. This started when a game I installed ("Men of War") decided to install DirectX 9 over my DirectX 10 without asking me, but I'm not sure whether that's a coincidence or not.Symptoms:~When I run DXDiag, I am immediately shown an error message reading "Error: Problem getting extra display info"~In DXDiag, the "Display" tab pretty much has no information in it. Everything is blank or n/a except for "Current Display Info", which reads "1280 x 1024 (32bit) (1Hz)". Also in the Display tab, Direct3D Acceleration reads "Not Available" while DirectDraw and AGP Texture Acceleration remain "Enabled".~In Device Manager there are two icons under "Display Adapters", both of which have a yellow exclamation mark next to them and claim not to be working. They are both called "NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2", which is the graphics card I'm using.~No online DirectX installs work, though I've used offline installers with no success.What I've tried:Pretty much everything I can think of short of buying new hardware/software and reformatting.~Tried searching the problem online. If the OS boots with no graphical corruption then the card is fine.Do you mind me asking...Which OS are you actually using?DirectX is not 'overwritten' by old installs. Infact, the game requires DX9 libraries, so the game will not function without them.Are you still able to open the nVidia control panel and disable the SLi on that card? I read a forum post with the HD 4870 X2 that was caused by the drivers not responding to the card due to is already being linked.I imagine what you meant by a clean install was to boot in safe mode, remove the drivers, reboot into normal mode, shutdown, boot again and install?

Recently the "find Album Info" option has stopped working on Window Media Player.
It was working fine, the option still loads up, however when i select the track/album info, the small window closes and the track remains unmodified.
I'm stumped as of what to do, I've looked around for solutions, tried updating, reinstalling, even upgrading from WMP10 to 11 to fix the problem, but with no sucess.

if anyone could offer any means of alternative or support I'd greatly appreciate it.

I want to connect for example to eduroam (free for students in Europe) ... I enter my Credentials -> but all I get is:

I get the same for "UPC Wi-Free" (=Free WiFi of my Provider): here I have to setup the connection manually, described by the provider - but the result is the same ...

[Troubleshot problems] is helping nothing (only deactivates & reactivates WiFi network adapter) ...

So as the screenshot is not providing so much information ...
where in Windows do I get more information what was not matching?
Credentials? Some Protocols? Certificates ...
Where do I find such infos for WiFi ?

   Thanks for the opportunity with this website!  My computer recently had a problem and I had to remove my flash drive without the proper procedure.  I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 1100 with Windows XP.Problem:  I cannot open the flash drive-a message box pops up with a formatting request (I know not to do!).   The properties show the drive "F" is RAW and there are 0 bytes used and 0 bytes available.   I tried running the Recuva Deep Scan and it cannot read anything due to the message: Unable to read boot sector.  I have removed the flash drive before without following procedure and didn't have problems (due to computer issues).Please help-I have over 5 years of business files, Quickbooks backups, all of my company logos, all personal files, everything on this flash drive.   Is there any hope, is it just damaged?  This is extremely stressful...I don't know what to do.

What kind of problem did your computer had when you removed your flashdrive that created this? It seems it has something to do with that. Flashdrives can only be damage either through virus infection or being careless with it.

I continue to have problems in copying / pasting when using Excel spreadsheets.
If I use Excel as soon as the PC starts up, I can copy and paste without any trouble.
But once I have been using my PC to do other things, I soon find that I can't copy and paste as I would like to. I can sometimes copy a single cell, but if I want to paste that cell into a range I get an error message.
Is there any chance that this is somehow linked to too small an allocation for "Swap Files"?
I have 8Gb in RAM on my PC, so I can't see that this could have any bearing.
But is there some part of the PC where temporary files are stored that is getting clogged up? Or am I just guessing?

This is a great board-- I have received a lot of help from here!
This is my next project.
Open the attached file and, on the right of the form, there are six cells with text.
I need to concatenate these with one space in between each one, then copy the group of them and use the clipboard to paste so I can open the "save as" dialog box and paste it as the filename. We need this in our environment to be able to create the file name quickly, paste it and save the file.
I want to be able to do this with a button that activates a macro.
You can see the button on the right side when you open the file. The macro assigned to it called "createfilename". The code is in module 1.
I got it started, but I know it needs help.

I am having problems with outlook express 6, it is taking about 1 1/2-2 mins to execute. This seems to be connected to a problem I have with WinMX. Everything was woking fine with my system until one day when I tried to run Winmx i got an error message saying something like "Winmx has failed to execute please reinstall and if this problem persists check your computer for Viruses" on the same day Outlook decided to slow down. I was about to do a hard drive format and clean install anyway so after installing everything again Winmx and Outlook worked perfectly...but only once where after it went back to the same problem.I have since done a second format and it is definately only after i install Winmx that i get the problem. The version of winmx i have used has been different on each occasion.
Any ideas???? I dont want to have to live without either program but if i had to make a sacrifice i would keep Outlook.
So its over to you guys.

After our big day here today ,I was deleteing a slew of E-Mail notifications , then I went to deleted files to clear them for good, when I came back to my inbox O/E froze ( 6.0) So I rebooted thinking all would be well Now it won't work at all, the blue splash screen comes up, and it goes to the main program, but then it hangs, and after a bit I get the not responding message in ctrl/alt/ delete. I have run scanreg /restore, ran my Virus program and ran scandisc, still no joy, any Ideas ??...Rhett
also, if I start it off the net, it won't start my dial-up before it hangs, also when on the net I seem to see activity in the connection windows, but nothing loads ??

In Outlook Express, under Tools, there is a category "Synchronize All". Often times, I find it necessary to click on "Synchronize All" to get "all" of my Outlook Express e-mail. What comes down --sometimes-- in Outlook Express is not "all" of my e-mail. I know this because I am using Mailwasher Pro and it shows additional mail prior to downloading to Outlook Express. So I click on "Synchronize All" in Outlook Express and the balance of the mail appears. I have only one mail account. So I don'tunderstand. Perhaps someone in this forum can speak to this ... and clarify exactly what "Synchronize All" means.

Outlook Express v6 running under Win XP SP2.

Having clicked on File | Export | Messages , I get a message saying "This will export messages from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange".

I clicked on OK and that's it. Nothing.

If I click File | Export | Address Book , I am then invited to name a file to which the address book should be exported.

Can anyone explain what is happening with export messages?

A friend is using OE with XP (Home) - SP3 installed. Also uses AVG.

She normally leaves her computer on continuously, but does periodically reboot it.

Recently, after being on for much of the day where she has used OE a time or two, OE will hang. Clicking on the shortcut or going to the program file and trying to open the application results in not activity. Checking the Task Manager shows that OE is not a running application.

Once in a while, a window appears saying, "An Unknown Error has occured".

The only way to resolve the problem so far is to reboot the computer, which is a bit aggrevating.

Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and am hoping someone could help.

I have downgraded to XP from Vista and want to go back to using Outlook Express.

I was able to migrate my mail and contacts TO Windows Mail when I moved to a Vista PC, but now when I want to move back to XP, I have no idea how to get my mail and contact data back into Outlook Express...even if that means migrating to a third party platform like Thunderbird first (Windows mail on vista >> Thunderbird or other mail client >> Outlook Express on XP)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
