Preferred Solution: Related search on left of screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have a problem.......every time I go on to a page or thread (on any forum) I get a pop up at the left side of the screen that says "related searches" and contains about 4 or 5 items probably related to the thread I'm viewing but do not want to have as it blocks out at least 1/5 of the screen.

It can be removed by clicking on a very small cross in a square box, but as the pop up occurs every time I turn a page over, not only on this forum but on all other forums I log on to, it gets extremely frustrating to have to keep doing it just to see the full page.

I have the pop up blocker set at full block, and keep also getting a reminder at the bottom of the screen that some item has been blocked etc.

This has only just happened in the last has actually only started to happen since I logged onto Facebook and Skype after a long absence, but I don't know if that is significant.

Is there a setting somewhere that I have inadvertently OK'd that allows the pop up to be present or is this something new to Win 7?

How do I get rid of the function?

Answer:Want Related Items pop up at left side of screen removed.

One option is to run a Flash and/or JavaScript blocker in your browser (e.g. NoScript in Firefox-based browsers).

Also, have you checked for malware on your PC?

I have a terrific HP Laptop which I purchased back in 2007 or 2008 and I rarely use it until last month, probably only once or twice a week with only a few hours.

Recently, I started to use HP Laptop on daily basis and found 'Search' at the left side of the pane/screen is missing/lost when clicking on 'Search' at the top. 'Search' at the address bar is perfectly OK tho'.

Is this issue related to not use it for a while, .... or how did it disappear?

Only seen is 'Google' ad. popping up upon clicking at 'Search' on the tool-bar of the top.

How can I rescue 'Search' at the left pane of screen?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Answer:Missing 'Search' at the left pane of the screen

Are you talking about Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or what?

Do you mean the "Search" option is missing when you (for example) right-click on your "C:" drive?

After downloading Windows 10, and therefore receiving the MS Edge Browser as the default browser, I am experiencing a problem when I search in Google ... the search results are not displaying correctly. At the far left edge the results are displaying one word per line. How do I fix that (or is Microsoft gleefully ignoring it?).

Answer:Google search results are displaying at far left of the screen in MS Edge

I notice that Microsoft Edge is displaying Google Search results exactly the same as Chrome. I see no difference. I am unable to duplicate the issue of one word per line at all.
Perhaps there is an issue with your installation of Edge, or perhaps it needs to be updated to the latest version of Edge?

When I used to do a google search, on the left of the page there would be options such as images, UK and a time option (24 hours, week month year) etc. But now it does not appear. A few options appear above the results, including a search tools option - when I click on it, it opens another line of options, such as "the web" and "any time", but how do I get those options to appear at the left of the screen again? (Firefox 17)

Answer:Firefox "search tools" missing from left of screen when searching

It is not just Firefox. As far as I am aware Google have changed the way that search results are displayed and there isn't way to change it back.

I want to revisit GhostFence and Amoxus posts from a couple of years ago concerning a small box appearing in the upper left of the display.

I found this little blue box last week in the upper left corner of my display on my PC at work. Once I dragged it to the open desktop, it appears to be a "window" roughly 1/4 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. After researching my task manager, I was able to link it to iexplore.exe; of course, I wasn't running the browser at that time. This has now been found on nearly 300 PCs in my company over the past 7 days. It's evading my Etrust signatures. I've found nothing recent about this on any website. These infected PCs have exe files stored in the D&S\Username\Application Data folder. There are various names but all are 404,992 bytes. Some of the names are:

Once I stop IExplore and delete the file(s), it doesn't appear to come back. Does anyone know if this is a 2008 recurrance of an old issue?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure! It does not sound like the problem files are in the same location as in the old threads so it may be a new version or the infection.

Perhaps you should consider running our cleaning procedure on at least one of your PCs to see if anything else is found.

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

Hey, I believe I have malware on my computer, my friend told me about this site and told me to use combofix, I did. It told me that I had a few rootkits, it said to take care of them I had to reboot, then it did it again, I had to do that a total of 2 or 3 times, the last time it told me windows wasn't genuine, I just Xed out of it because it is genuine. I have the log, it told me it deleted the problems, but yet I'm still expierencing them. Whenever I search anything, not just on google, on bing, yahoo!, ask, alta vista, dog pile, any search engine, almost always norton pops up saying it blocked an attack. Ive been making my own personal log of things happening to my computer, I have attached it here just incase you might need more info on what's going on with my computer. And as I type this an attack was attempted by resuleted from svchost.exe, ones that are resulted from that appear to be random, also it keeps trying to turn off User Account Controls, yesterday it was notifying me, today it is not, but I think combofix has deleted the rootkits causing that. I have also used malwarebytes. It found a malware packer and a keylogger. Let me start by first exclaiming how happy I am to have finally found a forum like this. From what I've seen, everyone here is very friendly and helpful! Please, correct me if I am posting in the wrong part of the forum for this..

I've recently been having trouble with right clicking, and using search. The button just doesn't seem to work! {On search, that is.} I go into My Documents, and click the search icon, and nothing happens. I can't even search for search x3... Also, my right click has been.. lacking. I can highlight icons with it on my desktop, and in folders, but the usual list that comes up, doesn't. Please give me any advice you have, thank you!

Answer:Search related issues.

Prepare you XP CD and try this :
Start => run => type "sfc /scannow"
It will check the system files integrity and replace possibly failing ones with the originals on the CD.

If that didn't help you should post a HijackThis report in the HijackThis thread to make sure it's not a malware problem. Read this first :

Hi -
Do you use more than 1 Email source, and is this common regardless of Browser (Internet Explorer / Firefox / Chrome etc.) ??
Are you able to check the email Header to see who sent it ? Usually just Hover the mouse over the Senders name (do not click on it).
Mine will give a basic senders email (example [email protected]) or other "similar" senders details .............

I have a problem where when in google or yahoo, using either IE or firefox, when I click on a link that i searched on, it will redirect me to a random web page. I've read through a lot of posts on this so I know there are issues similar, however the thing that I see is that when I click on one of those search links and it takes me to some random page if I click back and click the same link 2-3 more times, it will actually go to the right page. I've run avast and it found and deleted the following two items

Since I've run it and it shows up clean. I've also run spybot and MLB, both show up clean, but it keeps happening. I explain it as happening intermittantly, because it won't happen every time, or even on every link I click on, and as I mentioned above, if I click the same link multiple times it will actually go to the right page.

I'm running XP pro.

Any help is appreciated.

I have a laptop that connects to the internet fine. However,,, and Yahoo search bar are inaccessible.

I have searched long and far and have found nothing related to this issue. I tried various antivirus/antimalware solutions and eventually settled on 'Norton Security Suite' (360) which was provided for free by my ISP. Norton did find 2 trojans and another small piece of malware and removed all 3 of them successfully.

I thought it might have been an issue with the Hosts file after having rid of the viruses and malware with the problem still there. There was no hosts file so I did a search (Dogpile) and found a sample Vista Hosts file and placed it in the appropriate folder.

Any ideas?

Answer:Can't use any google related site and other search engines

Download and try malwarebytes. It has solved a lot of problems.

In addition, download a FireFox Browser, see if the problems remains.

I started having problems with not being able to hibernate with the hibernate button. It was around same time I was trying to get search engines that creeped onto my system like avg search and so on. I tried registry fix apps, Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes. They didn?t help. Can somebody help me?

Answer:Couldn’t hibernate? Malware related? Avg search?

Hello ineedhelp2012 and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's dangerous to use registry tools. They can cause more damage than they fix. First thing I'd try is using a system restore point to return my computer to a date/time prior to when the hibernation problem first appeared.

System Restore

If that doesn't work or if you don't have any system restore points I'd run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You could also try turning hibernation off, rebooting, then turning it back on. Although if you don't use hibernation you could leave it off and gain some additional hard drive space almost equal to your installed memory.

Hibernate - Enable or Disable

Hi there,

Recently, my computer has become bogged down with popups. I'm running WinXP SP2, for the record. I ran AdAware, the add on, SpyBot, and CWShredder as per your instruction thread. They are all reading clean.

When checking the task manager, the CPU usage gradually climbs over the course of a usage session to 100% and hangs there until a restart. Popups come in two forms.

The first come as IE windows from and are ads for multiple different products.

The second come two at a time, with the title "ULWindowSeek" and "ULWindowURL" on each, respectively. One is blank, and the other asks the user to click on a few links to help the "Search Control Project." No thank you, Search Control.

In the bottom right corner of the screen, where the AIM icon among others hang out, there are two new blinking "Virus Alert!" icons. One is a blue circle with a white question mark and the other is a green handicapped sign. Each blinks from its original form to one of those no-smoking sign type deals and back again. WHen hovered over, again, they state "Virus Alert!"

Finally, a red box stating that "Your Computer is Infected!" pops up and then fades away in the lower right corner from time to time. This box has nothing to do with any program presently installed on my computer.

Here's my HJT log:

Hi! Here is a new one, on an HP XP PC... (new, professional version).
When you LEFT Click any folder or hard drive, it will go to SEARCH. I have tried several ways to re-direct, but to no avail.
1) System Restore: went back 3 months
2) Tools/Folders: tried to set to origional settings
3) Virus software: none found
4) Ran several options in 'run' to find the shell, but nothing set there either.

I would like to be able to do this without doing a complete system restore if possible. This is a machine shop and it would be an all day thing setting all the machines back up and running.

I have researched several sites, but they all deal with RIGHT click issues. So, not sure what my next approach should be.

Any takers on this one?

Answer:Folders going to SEARCh with Left Click

Go to Start-Control Panel, Folder Options.
Make sure COntrol Panel is in classic view if you don't see it.
CLick on the filetypes tab, then highlight File Folder.
Go to advanced.
Click advanced, New.

Application used:
Click ok, highlight it, and click Set Default.
That should do it.
You'd think MS would fix this bug, seeing how its 6 years old.

Hi, thank you for helping. My pc got viruses: when search on IE (any like Google/Yahoo), the link leading to all related ads/commercial webpages instead of the right wed address.I guess it started when I opened a wmv file from P2P download, asked to install code (some like that) on windows media player, without paying attention, then clicking on the button, even trying cancel button after seconds, already too late, the IE search problem 's here and pretty bad. McAfee detected "Generic!atr" (Trojan), some file: C:\autorun.inf, "DNSChanger.o (Trojan), some file: ...\Temp\tmp44.tmp. Running McAfee manual scan didn't do much. Trying windows system restore even couldn't complete the process. Then more the problems: windows crashing (frozen when applications running, even no respond after windows startup), only the on/off button manually turning off the pc, also windows running very slow.

I restart my computer this morning and randomly I see the right click menu when I am using Firefox now has several options large enough to fill my entire screen, but none of them even work with the exception of Select All. I've tried refreshing and restarting with add-ons disabled, and still not working.

It's got to be something to do with the search engines because the search function in the toolbar doesn't work, if I go to the homepage and try searching using that, the search button doesn't load the search, and even in the options page, the Search tab doesn't load.

Any ideas??

I was infected with XP Smart Security but removed it with help from bleepingcomputer posts. Now I have found a search redirect problem that was left behind. I have searched high and low and run a bunch of different scans but the only solution that looks like it might work is the Gmer/Combo Fix approach and I need some hep to do that. I have run Symante Endpoint, Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, Webroot Spy Sweeper, HiJack This and Spybot S&D. None have found anything significant. I ran the DDS scan as directed. I also have attempted to run Gmer scans as directed but it crashes repeatedly, I even redownloaded it from another location and that did not fix it either. It would scan for 30+ minutes and not find anything but would give me the BSOD and I would have to restart my machine. It is currently unnplugged from the network and I am posting from another machine. I am running one more Gmer scan and will note the error message that I get when it crashes. Also based on my searching I have now updated my Java and removed old versions, and my Adobe Reader should be up-to-date. One other thing, I see below my Symantec is showing as outdated, we are in the process of replacing it for the office so the definitions are about a month old. I use Windows XP. Suddenly, when I go to My Computer and left click on a drive ( C for example) instead of opening, it immediately goes into "Search."

If I right click on the drive (any one listed) the drop down menu appears and "Search" is on top and in bold. I can left click "open" and get to my drive and once in everything works as normal.

What have I inadvertently done recently to make "Search" the default order when I double left click a drive and how do I return "open" as my default?

Thank you in advance for what I hope is a simple answer.

Answer:[SOLVED] Left Click Drive goes to Search no open

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Please try the registry fix which can be downloaded here.

Unzip it then double click it to merge it with your registry. Then reboot and try accessing the drive again.

this is a .vbs fix which came from the legendary MVP Doug Knox.

I am a windows xp user and believe I have a rootkit problem. First thing i noticed was that abc and spybot could not update (couldn't connect to server). My searches with firefox appear normal however if i click on a result i get redirected to another search. I can copy/paste the url of the search result and get what i want. Every security related site is blocked. Including this one. I have to use another computer to download anti-spy stuff. I get a "Failed to connect" Only happens to security sites.

Sorry I can't post logs until i figure out how to unblock urls.

I was able to download "rootkit reavealer"

it found tdssserv.sys timestamped 8/9/08, which is about when i noticed the problem.

I ran HijackThis, it is pretty full of entries (again I can't post a log yet)

I had to download these files on another computer. I also installed combofix and accidently ran it when i transfered it from a cd. It runs for a second and then reports "combofix had detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine. It does then boots normally and combofix does nothing else. I did install "windows recovery console"

Any help is appreciated.

Little help required, because I feel like i've done my fair share of searching what I thought I could fix origianlly....

My search is broken, saying the results may be incomplete, cortana isnt particularly helpful! I've tried rebuilding the index, taking ownership of files and turning indexing on and off and restarting. After search I found this thread, which suggests it could be a local language setting mix up, i've combed through everything I can think of, and checked everything matches. But Cortana still isn't playing nice nor is the search on the w10 new settings page etc...
I've got screenshots of everything I can think of I should have changed and any more advice would be appreciated, I'd really not like to fresh install, but I fear i'm getting close....?

Answer:Broken search, possibly language related? Cortana incomplete results.

Yes, typical of a not quite complete language change. MS ought to make this wizard-based, it is so confusing, as you need to make several changes. It's a weakness.

You seem to have changed the obvious things. I seem to recall 2 additional downloads besides changing the display language, one for speech, which you've done. Thank you for the thorough set of screenshots.

You should see helpful tips when you click Learn More in Cortana (2nd screenshot) and the tabs shown. Have you worked through these?

What is the original language of your OS?

That's what you need to see.. mine was US originally, changed to UK

Hi, I hope someone can help me please. I'm new to this and have tried various scans and some procedures used by others to try and get rid of this problem I've now had for weeks. It's really frustating:
I clink on a google search link and about 75% of time I am redirected to a site vaguely similar, but not the one I want (e.g. Panda Security goes to something like "Security Jobs" or "Security Services" etc. Sometimes I can go back, re-click the link and eventually get to the real page I'm after, but often my browser won't go back and I have to close IE and re-open and start the google search again (2nd or 3rd try usually gets me through).
I've done as many spyware scans a I can find and done the resulting fixes but still have the problem. I would really appreciate your help. Here is my HJT log:

Left click on my mouse, issues a Control F and search opens.

I don't know how it started but since this morning whenever I click the left mouse, or touch the screen, a 'control F' is issued. So on the desktop, search opens. If I am in a browser, browser search box opens or gets focus.

I have no idea how to turn it off. I didn't even know I could associate key strokes with a mouse click.

I have just purchased a Satellite Pro A300 and downgraded it to Windows XP SP3.

When I left-click any folder icon on my hard drive I get the 'Windows Search' window displayed instead of opening the folder. When I right-click any folder icon, the first item in the menu (bolded) is 'Search'.

How can I change the order of these menu items so as 'Open' is the first item?

Can I remove (Control Panel-Add or Remove Programs) the Windows Search facility without affecting any software I have loaded?

Is having the Windows Search facility installed the likely cause of my problem?

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - I get the "Windows search" if I left click any folder

Have just solved my own problem:

1. The order of items in the shortcut menu for Folders can be changed by updating the actions for specified file types in the Folder Options Menu. Select +Folder Options+ from the +Tools+ menu of any folder, select +File Types+ and scroll down to *Folder*. Click *Advanced* then click *New* and add *Open* with *Explorer* as the program to use. Click *OK* and *Close* and bingo! Appears the order of the short-cut menu in XP is Open before search, but in XP Pro is Search followed by Open/Explore.

2. The Windows Search utility can be safely removed despite the warning issued - the Microsoft website indicates the warning is simply a generic warning and it is highly unlikely that removal will affect any software installed since the Search utility was loaded.

3. The Windows Search utility was NOT the cause of this problem.

Trust this might save others the hours of research I had to do to find this solution ...

My X1 Carbon (4th gen) runs Windows 10 (64-bit). When I click the middle TrackPoint button to scroll (with the red TrackPoint mouse), I am able to scroll, but this always opens the Windows start/search menu. If the cursor is far enough to the right of the screen, I can scroll just fine with the Start menu open, but I would like to disable whatever it is that is making the middle button open the start menu. Thanks

Hi, I want to know how I can assign left clicking the start button in Windows 8.1 to open the search bar instead of the start screen. I know that the search bar can be opened with Win+S or right click->search but I like just left clicking with my mouse once to get to search.

I was thinking that there may be a registry file that I can modify to make this change. Any idea where to look?

Answer:Change left click start button to open search bar

Hello TrantaLocked, welcome to Windows EightForums!

If you click on 'Start' then begin typing, the search bar will appear automatically. From the drop down menu above the bar you have the option of where to search.

I just did a normal restart of Windows 10 Pro 64, FCU, and all my screen icons were arranged in some random order on the left
side of the screen, with each column of icons going from the top to the bottom of the window. I have had this same problem before, but usually when I system locked up and I had to force a shutdown or do a complete power button reset.

What does Windows reset my desktop icons? And more importantly, is there any REG setting that can prevent this problem from happening again. it's very frustrating when this happens , and I can never get all the icons to their same positions as before.

Answer:screen icons scrambled to random sort on left side of screen

I don't know a solution to that problem, but maybe a suggestion is to make the Desktop simpler for you to use. I don't know how many icons you have on there, but I have everything organized on my Desktop, so if an error like that occurs, I wouldn't have too much of a hassle by rearranging everything back to the way it was.

Sorry, this is not a fix for that error, only a suggestion to prevent the error from being too troublesome.

As you can see in the screen shot, I have in the first column, I have The Computer itself, the main icon. Then after that, My important files and folders in My Stuff. Then the Recycle Bin which has a parody of a name which still makes sense, the place where the computer can Recycle Binary. After that is the Downloads from the internet folder, so I don't cram the Desktop from downloading straight to the Desktop. And after that, Projects that I do on the computer.
Column number 2 has all the icons programs sorted in those three folders
Column number 3 is just other programs.
Column 4 has a folder named Games and shortcuts to the games are in there.
Column 5 is a shortcut to Windows Update, so I can double click it and see what updates the computer has done, etc..

There's an extra file there on the Desktop, but no worries, I'm working with that file at the moment.

Hi guys! On my new TPY the touch screen on the left hand side (the side where the charger is connected) is unresponsive. The pen however works perfectly fine. I have already run the lenovo software update tool and updated/installed all the drivers so I wonder what might be the culprit here...? Best,Chris

if the left hand screen touch is unresponsive, then it is a hardware problem. You would need to send in for service.

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Hey guys I just fixed a CRAZY virus (I think its a virus) I had that changed my userinit.exe files and I fixed it by replacing these files using my friends userinit.exe files . Now I'm getting a blue screen with an error that reads:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xF7547756, 0xF78A242c, 0xF78A2128)

Also it says something about BIOS to either upgrade it or disable conflicting components.

About the "Virus/Trojan or something":

Just so you know:

1) I downloaded this file <> (if anyone is brave enough to download it and see if their antivirus detects it because I don't have an antivirus so I still don't know the name for this... I guess its a virus or trojan) when I double clicked the file "iphider37se.exe 4.2 MB" it automatically installed a "Windowspcdefender" and started scanning. It looked like a really fake virus scanner so when I click X to close it I got a blue screen and was forced to restart my pc.

2) Then the problem was that windows would load to the Welcome screen and I clicked on my user account to log in (no password required)

3) Then my desktop would appear AS IF it was ready to load up but then it would automatically go back to the Welcome screen.

4) This happened even in Safe Mode so I had to put my drive as a slave drive on ANOTHER PC.

5) It took me HOURS to somehow figure out the userinit.exe files may have gotten corrupt or rewritten by this... Read more

My desktop settings are as such:
View --> Small icons, align icons to grid, show desktop icons
I have 2 rows of icons (shortcuts and stuff) on the left
and 2 rows of icons on the right.
The ones on the left are perfect, the ones closest to the edge, have about 1/4 inch of space to the edge of the screen
However, the ones on the right have about an inch and I can't place them closer unless I do all manually, which I don't want to do since they will all be crooked, not does the option seem to exist.
I would like the right side to 'kiss' the edge as they do on the left. Is this possible or not? If not, why pls? Thank you

Answer:Desktop icons not equal on left of screen compared to right of screen

pintree go to the desktop > right click anywhere on the screen > View > untick Align icons to grid

It does take some positioning though I don't think the OS will put it exactly on the right edge you will have to do it manually.

This problem is affecting ***ALL USERS*** on a new computer I'm setting up in a corporate environment. I thought I'd share my experience in detail in case anyone else is looking for some specific keywords. I've tried as many suggestions from a Microsoft Answers thread as well a post on BT called "Has your Windows 10 Start menu stopped working? Here are four ways to fix it," including suggestions in the comments there.
We have received a shipment of Dell OptiPlex 7040 desktops with Windows 10 Pro built in (Express Settings setup). DisplayPort monitor; 3 USB connections to keyboard, mouse, and speakers; wired LAN; no antivirus except Defender.
I set up the first machine and let the Windows Updates install. I'm not sure if that was the issue, but once I rebooted, I could not open the Start Menu. Nor could I use Cortana or left-click on ANY icon in the taskbar.
Here are the steps that I've tried (that I can remember), starting simple to more complex:
(1) Reinstall Windows apps in Administrator PowerShell: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
(2) Ran sfc /scannow 3 times, rebooting after each. You can see from log file snippets below that the scan detects the same errors every time, but cannot fix them.
(3) Restarted with msconfig "Safe boot" (Safe Mode).
(4) Ran built-in Dell Command Update and installed the... Read more

I'm having a little difficulty here. In succinct terms, whenever I double left click on a folder, it opens up a search window and not the actual window. Opening up "My Computer" and "Hard Drive" is not a problem. If I right click and choose explore or open, the file opens normally but at the moment, this is my only method of navigating my computer.

The problem seems to have occurred after I did some experimenting with Windowsblinds and Avedesk. Since then, I have been trying to sort it out but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

So, I'm sysprepping Windows 8.1 with an answer file set to CopyProfile=True.  I log in to my customized account and sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:unattend.xml.  Everything copies over just fine.  I get my layout in the Metro
start menu, etc, etc...

However, when I log in to the default profile I originally customized after sysprep, everything works great.  But when I log into any other account created during sysprep or thereafter and I hit the windows key and do a search for "Update" -
and select "Windows Update"  I get an error:

Title: C:\Users\ORIGINALDEFAULTACCOUNT\AppData\Local\Packages\windows.immersivecontrol.....
Message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.  You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
It's not every single shortcut... Only a certain fiew.
I get a nearly identical message when trying to launch "Programs and Features" from start.  If I manually navigate to these controls, they load up just fine.  Just the search items seem to be pointing to the wrong point.  Is there like
a cache that copyprofile seems to be copying over for some reason?
I've tried modifying the built in administrator account thinking Microsoft has gotten a bit stricter on which account I can use, but I get the same error.

Can anybody help?

Answer:CopyProfile causes search shortcuts on all users search screen to point to the default user profile

Ok.  So.... after updating the image as of yesterday, this issue has disappeared.  Same image.  Haven't done anything differently.

I can actually use my base image, not run updates and replicate the error, but updates between the last time I ran updates (couldn't have been more than two weeks ago) and yesterday, the issue has disappeared.

Thank you MS!

Hello guys,  First of all, I'm a noob here, so please forgive me if I'm posting this at the wrong session. I've searched the forum to check if there's any topic similar to this problem, but i didn't finded. I recently reinstalled the windows 7 on my Lenovo G-series (G470). The problem is that it stopped showing the screen informations about the functions related to the FN key. Such as volume level, screen bright level, the FN+F2 don't turn off the screen anymore. I presume that this is a driver problem, but I reinstalled all the drivers I think I would need, but i still have this problem.  The second thing (that I believe that is directly related to the first one) is that I am not able to use an external screen (via HDMI or VGA cable), because the image of the notebook simply don't appear in the external screen. And when I press the FN+F7 it simply don't show that image options such "Computer Only" / "Duplicate" / "Extend" / "Projector Only". It's like i haven't connected any cable to the laptop at all.  Can you guys please help me?  Thank you very much

For some time I've began to receive Blue screens , which are actually Black screens where sound is looping, but I receive a blue screen report after reboot.

The bluescreen has yet only occurred when playing computer games (No preformance demanding games, e.g. some CoD4). Therefor I believe this is graphic related. I have reinstalled Drivers and the OS but with no luck.

Windows 7 is:

- x64
- the original installed OS on the system
- an OEM

- Hardware age: Almost a Year
- OS age: A couple of days
Hope you can help me, thank you.

It seems I have to open File Explorer and use the search box there to search the contents of my IE Favorites folder. Is there anyway to add the same capability to the Start Screen Search. So far all I can do is put in the word "favorites" and start screen search finds the Favorites folder but it can't find any of the internet shortcuts (*.url files) within the Favorites folder. Is this normal? If so how can I change the normal behavior so it works like the start button search from Vista and Win7?

Answer:Start Screen Search Won't search IE Favorites Websites

Hello Ronc. Welcome to Eight Forums.

There are many ways to search favorites.
Also favorites can be added to the start screen search.

First, the easiest way is to pin the favorites folder to the start screen.

Second, is to list favorites (using internet explorer) in metro or desktop views.

(Adding favorites to start screen search)
Third, is to copy your current favorites folder to the metro UI start menu folder ...

The following is an example (only a few) of website favorites being listed in the start screen search.

Still, the easiest way is to pin the favorites folder to the start screen.

i get the Blue Screen error a lot, it says:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with error number 000000D1 or 0000000A
and nvata.sys, i searched up and some website said that the error nvata.sys refers to an error with the hard drive.

I have 2 hard drive, Western Digital ( old one ) and Hitachi ( new one ),
the problem occurs when:
1-Playing World of WarCraft which is installed on partition H ( old hard ).
2-Copying the World of WarCraft folder to the new hard.
3-Defragmenting partition H.

I've updated the driver, and also tried connect the old hard to another sata connetion but still have the problem.

Hi Guys,

As I explained in a previous post, I bought a new second hand setup, I freshly installed XP Pro SP3, All hardware & chipset drivers for my ASRock 775Dual-VSTA mainboard, Radeon X1950Pro videocard, etc

But sometimes the comp locks up, especially when gaming, I just booted up rainbox 6 vegas, and at the menu the screen locked up, waited a bit, then went black, I had to hit the reset button to get it working again.

Would this mean their is something seriously wrong with the videocard? I don't have another display adaptor to test, so I am a bit unsure of what to do.

Hey Exo,if you follow my advice in this post you can begin to eliminate components-

While your on the menu screen of a game the video isn't being stressed at all so its unlikely the video card but not out of the realm of possibility.

Hello everyone.

After a ton of research, I've decided to make an account here in hopes that maybe I can get a solution to an issue that I've been having. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to troubleshoot a desktop given to me by someone that I work with, and after climbing a lot of hurdles, I have run into an insurmountable wall here that doesn't seem to be shared by too many other users over the internet.

Computer seems to successfully boot to Windows 10, but the log-in screen does not display with anything useful. Keyboard and mouse input do appear to be working and responsive, though I am not able to see any sort of cursor. I'd tried the WinKey + P trick that many had mentioned, which helped to confirm to me that I was at least seeing some picture from the operating system, as the projector options did display. However, switching the projector options is not doing anything to help here: the black screen stays the way it is, cursorless. Pressing WinKey + P again will cause the projector options to display, but cycling through the options does not change anything. Interestingly enough, it is also possible to press WinKey + U to get a few accessibility options (On-Screen Keyboard, Sticky Keys, etc).

Ctrl+Alt+Del / Ctrl+Alt+Escape does not yield any sort of visible results, either.

I went through the process of enabling the legacy boot menu policy to allow for F8 to display the additional boot options: Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking are not yielding any pos... Read more

Hello, it still may be a malware issue..Do not delete them yet/Please download and and extract it.Run TDSSKiller.exe. Click Start scan. When it is finished the utility outputs a list of detected objects with description.
The utility automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects.
The utility prompts the user to select an action to apply to suspicious objects (Skip, by default). Let the options as it is and click ContinueLet reboot if needed and tell me if the tool needed a reboot.Click on Report and post the contents of the text file that will open.

Note: By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder. The Log has a name like: TDSSKiller.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these[/color] instructions. I have recently been experiencing a blue screen. So i removed my Nvidia GeForce 6800 card from the motherboard and booted back up. Got the same screen. So then i restarted the system and went into bios setting's thinking maybe the bios was confused where the card had been there before and the Nvida drivers were still on my hard drive. So i set it to on-board video as my video setting''s.Well it worked for a day maybe not even a full day and the same screen popped back up.So i reinstalled my on-board video driver's. Still the same thing. But whats weird is sometimes it boots up fine and the majority of the time it does not. Just blue screen.I ran the GeForce 6800 in my system since i built it back in late 09.I don't understand why all of a sudden this problem has arisen.I called windows of course they were no help at all. In fact i knew more about the problem than they did and they couldn't give me any explanation. If anyone find's a fix or anymore information about this. Please let me know because I'm afraid if the problem persists ill have no choice but to reformat.I cant believe that it has not hit me with the blue screen yet.

There is another poster with same problem, but never any more info. Link Below.

I just purchased a new puter with windows 7. However the left side of the screen is cut off and I can't get to the windows there. How do i change the size or resolution of the home page..?

Answer:Left side of screen is cut off

First make sure the display resolution is set to the correct values for that particular monitor (the monitor has a "native" resolution and you need to set the display resolution to match that). Changing the resolution doesn't just change it for the "home page" (whatever that is?), it changes it for everything.

After setting the resolution to the correct values, any further adjutments to picture size that are needed can be made with the monitor's own height and width adjustment controls (usually via an on-screen menu system in conjuction with the monitor's buttons).

I have reloaded all the video drivers from a utility disc and I know it is not a hardware issue because I movd the HD to a different machine and the same exact thing happens.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Answer:Screen scrolling through right to left

hardware checked in what ways btw?.... see if anything can be gleaned here;

I do not know what happened ... I was watching something on hulu, got up to use the restroom real quick and when I returned the whole screen was tilted 90 degrees to the left (I thought I had accidentally clicked on something to cause a tilt but cannot find any sort of fix on the keyboard or settings to reset the view back to normal). I am not very proficient w/ computers so I called a computer repair place that I've used in the past. They said it sounds like a virus and to bring it in. Everything else seems functional on the pc ...... this is really irritating and has thrown off my sense of gravity....I just want to make sure this isn't something I can fix at home before being charged a $100+ service fee ..... any help/insight would be appreciated.

Answer:screen has tilted 90 deg to left ... help

Lots of crooks out there like that.I've been doing PC repairs for almost 10 yrs now. Let me know how you make out. above link has your solution. It is free by the way ;-)Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I turned on my youtube playlist before going to lay down, and when I came back, my screen had magically shifted to the left on its own. In other words, I have a thick black strip on the right of my screen of approximately 2 inches. This also happened when I first got my monitor and I can't remember how I fixed it because the last time this happened was 2 or 3 years ago. The autoconfig feature doesn't place the screen to its original position, and the horizontal shift feature doesn't fill in my screen completely. I ran a dxdiag and all my drivers are up to date. My monitor is an Acer X223W.

My recommended resolution is 1680x1050. This problem will persist as long as the resolution is above 1440x900. However, I noticed the screen will shift to the right instead of the left if I use 1440x900 or 1366x768. But obviously if I use a resolution other than the recommended one, I'll get headaches for days, so we can't have that.

Any ideas?

i cannot see the upper right corner of the screen as a result cannot see the menu button and other buttons tpp

Answer:move screen to left

To see all content within the Window:Hold Control and tap the - key, this will shrink the windows content so you can see all.To see content outside of the Window:Hold the Alt key and tap the Space Bar to open the Windows Menu, then tap the x key to maximize or select maximize from the menu. By maximizing the Window it will fill only to the corners of the screen which will actually reduce any of the window that is beyond the screen and make it go corner to corner only. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Cannot remove white panel with leaf on it from my screen. Cursor goes behind it so cannot access panel. How do I remove this?

Answer:Panel on left of screen

Yes. Was the leaf shape always just a shape, not obviously artwork? To test everything, plug a different monitor into the computer, and, ifpossible, plug the monitor into a different computer. The problem might be with the connection between the computerand the monitor, but the result of pressing on the screen stronglysuggests that it is in the screen itself. If it is a laptop, you will want to take it in for service. A separatemonitor can be serviced, but you might want to just replace it. -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

Answer:How can I move my screen to the left

If this is a monitor can you move the picture using its OSD (on screen display)? Also try using the video adapter defaults in window's display properties. How does it look in safe mode? You may want to upgrade the video drivers.Post back the monitor model number or laptop model, if that's what you've got.

Recently I reformatted my HD. I reinstalled everything I had before, updated all the drivers and all that.
My games began crashing and freezing everything up. When I start up my computer and the desktop comes up, the screen scrambles for a moment then comes back. Sometimes it doesnt come back and sometimes it just starts flashing black. The only way to stop it is to restart, cross my fingers and pray that the computer gods are in a good mood today.
Is this maybe a software conflict somewhere?

Answer:Screen Scrambles On Start Up And Possible Related Issues.

Most likely this is either a bad video card or corrupted video drivers. The first thing to do is to download a copy of the latest certified drivers for your video card from the video card chipset manufacturer's website (ATI, nVidia, etc). Then the video drivers from Control Panel...Add/Remove Programs (if they're not there, don't worry about it) - and removing the video card from Device Manager. Then reboot.Dismiss the Found New Hardware Wizard and double click on the freshly downloaded drivers to install them. Reboot as required. For further troubleshooting, you may want to read this post about finding BSOD messages (as I suspect that's what you're having)

I was playing Modern Warfare 2, and just after a match had finished, and was changing to the game summary, instead of going to the game summary, the screen was was covered in vertical lines alternating dull yellow and dull green (similar colours in the game summary menus). it stayed like this with the sound in the background still going for like 15/20 seconds. it woudn't allow me to ctrl alt delete, or escape or anything. I believe it had froze. The screen just went to no signal and turned off. I tried resetting the computer, but the screen doesn't come on (i turn the screen on and off and the screen stil goes to no signal). I took out the graphics card and put it back in and the screen still doesn't turn on. I also tried switching the dvi plug to the 2nd one on my card and it still doesn't turn on.

The card is XFX Ati Radeon HD5770. I bought it yesterday, after my original card ASUS Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB was artifacting (2nd time its happend), which is currently being fixed under warranty(2 months left)
The card has been worked fine the last 2 days.

when i try to turn the computer on it doesn't seem to start up like it use to, even without the screen working - there is no beep which usually happens when u first turn it on.

Anyone know what the problem is?

Hi i was watching a tv show using megavideo last night and loads of popups came up giving the usual crap about needing to install stuff.I thought i closed them but maybe i clicked on them by accident.

Anyway all of a sudden AVG started detecting loads of random threats...mainly .exe files being found all over the place.

I tried healing them but loads more kept coming so i turned my internet off thinking they were being downloaded but they kept coming.

I went into msconfig and found two new programs trying to run on startup so i unchecked them and restarted my computer, thinking this would stop the incessant threat detection. Probably a bad move.

Anyway, now when i turn my computer on i get a big blue screen with the following errors:

0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xBA4F34EO, 0xBA4F31DC, 0x8A54C889)

I cannot start my computer in safe mode or restore it to a last known good configuration

How can i get back to my computer so i can at least save some files?

I need some serious help please!

Thank you,

Answer:Blue Screen of Death - malware related

Hi, makihara

You should always post your Operating System, and whether is a 32bit or 64bit system.

Lets give this a try. You will need a flash drive to move information from the sick computer to a working computer, so we can see the progress of our actions. Save these instructions in your flash drive as a text file (use notepad) so you can have access to these while in an external environment (PE).

Here is what you need to do.

Two programs to download

Download ISOBurner. Click Here for ISOBurner Instructions. Install the program, and follow the next set of steps.

Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 276.7MB in size so it may take some time to download.
When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD
Boot the Non working computer using the boot CD you just created.
In order to do so, the computer must be set to boot from the CD first
Note : For information click here

Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
OTL should now start. Change the following settings
Change Drivers to All
Change Standart Registry to All
Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

Dell inspiron 14z n411z, I have tried to install the intel hd 3000 graphic drivers from both microsoft and from the intel website. issue is occasionally screen will "flash" as in glitch sideways a little for a split second. I don't think they is any damage to the laptop itself because shaking it, or moving the screen open/close does not cause the screen to glitch up. it just happens completely randomly.
I just recently installed a fresh copy of 7 on a clean parition, but i think it had been doing it prior. maybe another driver or something i have installed is interfering with the graphics driver? I have tried re-installing random drivers, but it didn't have any effect.

Answer:screen flashing issues, driver related?

Do you see the flickering problem in safemode? All Windows 7 drivers are available at the Dell website including the video driver. Remove the Intel driver completely and use the custom driver from Dell.

Hi guys. I'm having problem with my desktop running Vista 64. Getting into windows is not a problem, however, once in windows it is not very stable at all; I have been getting a blue screen that causes the PC to restart. The PC does get a little more stable once rebooted several times, however programs running in the background randomly crash and eventually the blue screen causes it to restart again and this can as easily occur at the desktop with only programs running in the background.
The PC has been running for about 10 months fine and I have reduced the frequency and voltage going to the memory in order to try solve the problem but it didn't help at all. Here is a picture of the blue screen I quickly grabbed with my phone and I would appreciate all suggestions; I'm expecting to need to replace the memory but I'm not sure it is directly related to the memory.

Thanks guys, Anthony

Hi I just recently downgraded from windows 7 x64 to x86 hoping to fix some BSOD related issues I've experienced with that, and they still don't seem to be solved. I initially thought there was some driver conflict with the 64 bit version but since switching back down to 32 but i've discovered that's not the case. I still have the same problems as before.

I believe it's a video card issue because this usually occurs either when playing a game which requires high gpu processing power or watching a full screen video (ie youtube). My screen freezes, glitches, then turns completely black; forcing me to restart the computer. After logging in I get the BSOD report from the OS telling me it was an error of LocaleID: 1033 and BCCode: 8e.

System specs:
OS: Win 7 Ultimate 32bit (6.1, build 7600)
System manufacturer: Biostar Group
MoBo: TA790GX A3+
BIOS: Default System Bios
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUS), 3.4GHz
Memory: 4GB
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5700

I have ran Memtest86 for 20 hours straight with no RAM issues.

If anyone can help me out I'd REALLY appreciate it. I've been struggling with this problem for weeks and it seems as if there's no end in sight.

I have attached my minidumps below.

Answer:Blue screen of death (possibly gpu related)

I looked at four logs which appear to be random: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (1a), DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER (f7), APC_INDEX_MISMATCH (1), and PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50).

I saw one thing strange in your last log; there is a driver named "MpKsl562163e7.sys" dated 03/30/2010 that doesn't show up in the other three logs. It appears to be a randomly generated name that doesn't turn up using Google.

Since you have already tested RAM, maybe next try switching to the on-board graphics for a couple of days to see if you still have problems.

Moments earlier I connected an old external HDD to get some files from it. Initially the HDD emitted some funny fast beeping sounds. I thought it was not properly connected so I removed it and reconnected it. Then it works like normal. After I'm done and try to eject the HDD, I got a prompt saying that it was in use. So I shut down my computer, removed the HDD, and restarted my computer. It loads all the way to the desktop being shown and started to load some background startup programs, then I get this blue screen as attached below.I can boot into Safe Mode. I did a quick google and it seems to be a driver issue, probably caused by the external HDD earlier. Microsoft has a hotfix for this, but it can't be executed from Safe Mode. How can I fix this?Thank you.
