Buffalo HD-PET640U2/R-EU external HDD not recognised

Question: Buffalo HD-PET640U2/R-EU external HDD not recognised

Hello. I've had the above drive for about a year & a half. It worked fine (on Win XP Home) up until a few days ago, when I connected it to my new laptop (Win 7).
On connecting, a warning message came up saying that Windows had detected disk errors - did I want to scan it? I said Yes, it completed the scan (no errors), but I couldn't access any of the files in Windows Explorer. I Safely Removed USB Hardware and tried again, but said No to the error scan ("Are you sure, some files may be corrupted?"). On continuing, I could see all my files.
I then selected Windows Scandisk, and once the scan completed the HDD was very slow to select. It didn't show any of my files again, and showed the following error messages whenever I tried to access it:
Local Disk (E)
You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it.
Do you want to format it?
Error checking
The disk check could not be performed because the disk is not formatted.
The disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk.
Would you like to format the disk?
Location is not available
E:\ is not accessible.
The volume does not contain a recognised file system.
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted.
I have tried it on all 4 USB2/3 ports, and my other Buffalo external HDDs work fine.
The HDD appears as 'Buffalo HD-PETU2 USB Device' in:
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager
and in
Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management
as '596.17GB RAW Online & Healthy'. My other HDDs appear as 'NTFS' or 'FAT32', not 'RAW', and I think (but am not 100% certain) that I'd formatted the problem disk to FAT32 when I bought it.
In My Computer the disk only registers as 'Local Disk (E)'.
I have tried to update Drivers but Windows says I already have the most up-to-date ones for the drive.
I also tried reassigning the Drive Letter to (K), but no change.
This disk was the backup for my most important files when I changed to my new laptop, and so I really don't want to lose them. I've read on some sites that I can still attempt to recover the files even if I format the drive (as long as I haven't written anything new to it), but I don't want to risk that unless there's no alternative. Equally I'd rather not try opening the drive casing up - on one forum it was suggested that the 'power supply component' for the HDD might be the problem, and opening the casing, removing the p/supply comp and running the drive in another hard drive enclosure might work.
I contacted Buffalo and they just suggested formatting it then trying to recover the files.
Does anyone have a better idea?
Thanks
Al

Hi,

Do NOT format it - that will result in you losing your files.

Use the Partition Wizard partition recovery software to try and recover the partition to another disk.

Hi....

I have a Buffalo 120 GB external Hard Disk that i connect to my HP Compaq Pressario M2000. It has been with me since 2 yrs. It was always fine, except for not being recognised a few months ago....it came back all by itself. So i was fine. I have a lot of data in it which is very important. So please give me any option other than formatting it.

When i rightclick on my My Computer and go to Manage > Disk Management and it shows me my Drive as F: 111.78 GB Healthy (Active).
But it does not display the name that i have given it (Rockin Ram) and when i try opening it, it says " F: is not acessible " The file drive is corrupted and unreadable ".

I have an internet connection with unlimited download, so please let me know if i need to download some software or install anything to repair it. I will do it, but please help me with this issue.
I believe you coz my previous problem was solved by you people !

Hi,

I have a Buffalo ministation HD-PF500U2 500gb portable hard drive, and an ASUS laptop running Vista.

The problem is this: Whenever I plug my hard drive in, its light begins green, but turns yellow, and the computer makes absolutely no indication that it has recognised it. I went to device manager and saw a USB Mass Storage Device apparently recognised, but nothing in My Computer, and no way to access it. So I chose to 'uninstall' this Mass Storage Device on Device Manager (since Device Manager told me it was still plugged in, even when it wasn't) and then plugged my hard drive back in. I got the 'installing device driver software' message, and was told it was all fine, but the light went yellow again, and still no way to access the files.

I've tried microsofts MATS program for devices, and that tells me that some hardware changes have not been recognised, but that it has fixed the problem. It tells me this every time I run it.

Any advice?

Thanks all,

Bob

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a BUFFALO  External  USB  DVD  RW ;  I am unable to use it with my COMPAQ  MINI  110-1100 DX LAPTOP  Product  Number : VM146UA#ABA . My mini Laptop does not have an inbuilt DVD RW. Will  somebody please guide about as to how to use this External DVD to install any software CD on to my Laptop ? Also, how to see & listen to a DVD using this DVD RW ? Can I use this DVD RW with my Desk-Top PC also ? Please guide in details and help me. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

Hello,

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

Answer:Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Hi

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, sa... Read more

Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from Play.com for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
-Steve

You could backup all the stuff do your desktop and reformat it but that would take some time copying over 180gb of date.

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Answer:Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.
Thanks!

So to protect the contents of the external HDD I decided it was safer to disconnect it from the PC. But when I plugged it in again, it didn't recognise it and loaded drivers for it.
The problem is it's now calling it an 'Intitio Default Controller' and as such doesn't show it in 'My Computer'. I can only find it in 'Devices and Printers'. When I click on it, it doesn't open or do anything?
I tried to get in touch with WD but they just gave me the run around, by showing my FAQ's. I have loads of stuff on there that I can't afford to lose.

Answer:External HDD not recognised for what it is

Hi guys thanx for your inputs, however, niether of your suggestions applied. I tried plugging into different ports, but the out come was the same. So I switched off the PC and unplugged the HDD. I rebooted the PC, then switched it off again and plugged the HDD back in and rebooted. Bingo, it was recognised.
Phew, that was a scary moment. I keep meaning to do more backups of my data, but I'm sure you know what good intentions are like...perhaps tomorrow. But we all know tomorrow rarely ever comes for fixes. Tomorrows are full of regrets for the fixes we never got around to do.

Hi everybody,

I have a weird situation on an w7 x64 OS. I have 2 Western Digital My book essential external hard disk (1TB each) and they are not both correctly recognised by the OS. They are both detected but one of them is recognised as CD Drive.

I have another 2 internal hard disk - one is partitioned in 2 partitions (C & D), the other has one single partition (E). One of the external HD is correctly recognised as HDD (letter assigned J), but the other external HDD (which has 2 partitions - H & I) is recognised as CD Drive - please see attached screenshot.

It is not a problem related to formatting as both external HDD have been formatted in NTFS. Actually, if I disconnect the external drive that is correctly assigned (J), the other external HDD becomes available as HDD with both its partitions.

Please advise if it has to do with letter assignment or w7 has a maximum no. of partitions recognised as HDD?

TKS.

Answer:WD external HD recognised as

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Please post a screenshot of your Disk Management layout so that we can see how your partitions are configured.

You can have up to four primary partitions on each hard drive, and then create logical partitions within the fourth primary partition if you need more.

As for your WD external drives, you could try changing their drive letters to say, X and Y, so that they are well away from your internal hard drives.

Hi, new to the forums but from everything ive read yall seem very helpful. So please help me as well
Ok.
I own 2 External 1TB Iomega USB HDD's they have served me well for about 8months now. They both are about 90% full and i know thats a little over the 15% free space line but ehh.

Well. I recently moved from California to North Carolina due to my job. I sold my old computer but kept both of my HDD's. I started to use them on my wifes computer and they worked well for about a month. Then i tryed plugging them in yesterday and neighter wants to work! They are both full of files i do not want to lose... I always safely remove them with the wizzard when i can. They both do not show up on disk manager...

Will supply info if needed. I use them A LOT. and they have never given me problems. They dont show up in disk managment. Ive went through all the steps on the manufactors website but still a no go.

They turn on, the power light is steady... the cable is not damaged that i can see on either end.

HDD on MFG's Website

Please help me with this! I really want to get those files back!

I have recently installed a PCI USB2 card and hub.I have Win XP (SP2) installed, my external HD works fine if plugged up to one of the USB1 ports although I get a message telling me that "The USB Mass Storage Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non HI-SPEED port. The hubs shown in bold type have ports that can support HI-SPEED USB devices, disconnect the USB Mass Storage Device from its current port and then connect it to one of the ports on a hub shown in blod type.If I do this I get a message: H:\ is not accessible, The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. When I go to device manager, there is nothing showing a problem and my USB device can be seen under Disk Drives as a WDC-WD400bb.... USB Device, there are also no conflicts under USB Controllers. If I use my external HD, ignoring the HI-SPEED message as plugged into a USB1 port, ll fuctions fine.I have looked at the device driver for the USB external HD and it tells me that drivers do not need to be loaded for WinXP, only for W98.Any help much appreciated.Sharon

Please help, a friend of mine has bought a Disgo DISNET3000r (why?) he has tried to plug his 2.5" external HDD in to the USB port but the Windows CE OS will not even recognise it. My opinion is this: Windows CE is an embedded OS and therefore it is held on flash memory so therefore has no need for sata or ide controllers which i believe is the problem but is there a way to get the drive to work or is it a lost cause and all he can use for storage is flash memory....Does anybody have any ideas or does anybody think my thoughts are wrong and know of some other reason why this wont recognise the device???
Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Hi,

I have been operating an external HDD (Maxtor, 40GB) connected through an USB port on my notebook for a few years now and only operated the HDD (which runs on external power supply) only occassionaly for backups and some file storage. It was working well without any problems until today, when during moving around some of the files stored on HDD the connnection to the HDD just suddenly dropped and could not be reestablished. When connecting the HDD through USB I only get message that "USB Device not recognized" and "One of teh USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
I am working with Windows XP SP2.

Any suggestions for help?

Regards

Peter

Answer:External HDD not recognised

First off, try it on another computer. If it malfunctions there, then either the drive or the USB case controller has probably failed.

The Touro drive isn't recognised in My Computer when I plug it into any USB port, though it powers up and a USB hardware icon appears in the system tray. In this state, I can't find a way of reading and writing to the drive. It appears as an odd, unlabelled volume in the Computer Management window, as I hope you can see from the JPEG screenshot I have attempted to attach to this, my first post (please let me know if the screenshot hasn't uploaded for some reason). However, very occasiionally, when I plug the Touro in, the little Autoplay window opens and the Touro does appear in My Computer.

When I restart the computer with the Touro drive plugged in, it does appear in my computer and I can us it normally.

I think the problem is within the computer because I have another Packard Bell A8 which I bought cheaply for spares and experimenation, though it appears to be working perfectly [I have found it incredi... Read more

I have an old IDE 100gb HDD which was installed in an external enclosure. Everything was fine till I cloned the OS from a new SSD to it for backup using the EaseUS Todo Backup Free 7.5 programe. When complete the following messages showed. "Failed-Partition Clone-)x1760E077"; Partition Clone Failed; Failed to write sector.

Now my computer does not recognise the external HDD, and shows it as an IDE device. How can I get the HDD recognised so that I can reformat the HDD.

My computer OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Answer:External IDE HDD not recognised by OS.

Does it show in Disk Management? If yes, you can try assigning a drive letter. If that doesn't work, use the diskpart command from a Elevated Command Prompt to set it up again (maybe).

diskpart
list disk
select disk # (# is the number of the 100GB external drive)
clean
exit

Note: Make absolutely sure you have selected the right disk before using clean.

If that works, assign a drive letter in Disk Management then quick format it.

In 2011, I bought 2 units of WD My Book Essential 2TB external HDD to backup my working files. Unit A is being used at least once a week for backup, while unit B is not being used regularly, probably just a handful of time 2-3 years ago.Now that unit A is full, as I took the unit B from the cabinet and connected it, it doesn't seem to be recognised:? I got the pop-up message saying the device is ready to use.? It appears in My Computer, but without the capacity information. Double clicking it doesn't open it, just the green loading bar. ? It appears in Device Manager under "Disk drives", but under "Other devices", there is a "WD SES Device USB Device" with yellow exclamation mark. So today I bring it to the computer shop, same problem. The technician said the HDD is dead and there is nothing can be done.My first question: How possible is it that a HDD that's rarely been used will die for no reason?Weird enough, after I reach home and try to connect the HDD again, this time I get the  scan the disk to fix problem message (can't remember the exact message), and after the scanning is completed, the HDD just works as normal! My second question: How can I be sure whether the HDD is really healthy? I'm hesitated to use it, worrying it may be dead again anytime.  Anyway, the computer shop technician suggested that I should get a mobile HDD instead (which does not require power input) since I'm only using it for ba... Answer:External HDD Not Recognised

My first question: How possible is it that a HDD that's rarely been used will die for no reason?HDDs don't die for no reason, they die for a reason. You just don't know why this one died. An HDD can die at any time, even after being in storage since new. In fact in a long-stored HDD the spindle lubricant can pool at one end of the spindle and prevent proper spinup the first time it is powered up. My second question: How can I be sure whether the HDD is really healthy? You can run the maker's diagnostic tool, WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, but you still can't be sure an HD won't fail. That's why we do backups. My third question: Practically, what are the differences between the two types of external HDD (one needs external power and one doesn't) ? An external drive without a power supply (wall wart or AC power) gets its power from the USB socket it is connected to. You need to be sure the USB socket can supply enough power. If it can't you can overheat or damage the computer system or hub and/or get flakey operation.  With an independently powered HDD, you don't have to worry about that.

I've read the threads about the AU causing problems with external HDDs, also that the latest patch Tuesday updates corrected this for some people.

I have the opposite problem:

AU installed without problems around 3 weeks ago. Latest updates installed on 23rd August, and nothing untoward noticed afterwards.

Up until yesterday I was using an HDD regularly but today I can no longer see the HDD in File Explorer. I've tried 2 different HDDs, tried different USB ports, tried restarting the laptop. It's still the same - HDD not being recognised. I DO get the audible 'warning' when the HDDs are plugged in and taken out but they then fail to show in File Explorer.

The HDD IS recognised in a laptop that does not yet have the AU, but since the problem has only happened today and I've had the AU since early August, it doesn't seem likely that AU is the problem here.

Could it be something to do with USB ports? (Though I use one for a wireless mouse and this is still working okay, and I connected a printer earlier today and that was also okay).

Any suggestions please?

Hey guys I have a problem that I need some help with. I bought an external HD for my laptop back in May which decided to stop working about 2 months ago. I wasn't to sure if it was the drive itself or another component that was faulty so I took the drive out and put it into a friends tower type PC. The drive worked fine. So I presumed it must be the small PCB board that connects to the drive inside the casing. I bought a new board and connected everything up but again I got nothing, so.....I bought a new casing with yet another new PCB board and tried once again. The first time I connected it to my laptop, the laptop recognised a external device being attached (i got the ding dong sound) but after about 45secs the ballon above the Add new hardware icon on the task bar said the device might not be working properly. Again I tried it on my friends PC, but this time attaching it via USB (instead of internaly). The PC found it straight away, it recognised the drive but there was not icon in "My Computer" to access the drive itself. This is driving me nuts, can anyone help? Im using a Acer Travelmate 240, XP Pro, all my USB ports are working and the external drive is a Maxtor 80Gb. Cheers guys and i do apologise for going on a bit.

Hi all,
I have a Lacie 250GB firewire external HD (couple of years old) which I use as a backup device. It's only used (switched on) about once a month.
Everything has been fine until yesterday. When I switch it on, the light comes on and it whirrs into action as usual, but, rather unusually, Windows 7 (32bit) starts looking for a driver and then says, "Device driver software was not successfully installed". The HD, unsurprisingly, doesn't show in "My Computer" but does show in "Device Manager".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the HD, but still no joy.
I have a separate 64bit partition (used exclusively for music) on the PC which does recognise the HD, so all is not lost, and leads me to think that the HD or cable is not the problem.
Any help much appreciated.

I have just purchased a Mecer OT-343 HDD external inclosure to move large files between various places of work and my workstation at home. I have used the drive at home for a few days transfering about 20 gig of data to take to other places of work. I have now connected the drive to two other computers (via USB2) at work and they both come up with the standard XP message that XP does not recognise this device, and the drive does not appear on "My Computer" at all. When I take it back home my workstation sees it and everything is working 100%.

My workstation and the other computers are all about a year old and all are running XP Professional ( no "Cracked" operating systems or software).

Any ideas what is going on here?

Answer:Mecer External HD not recognised by XP

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the ... Read more

hi everyone,
looking for someone to point me in the right direction if possible!!

i've just been round to my friends house who's just bought another DVD-RW. It's an internal drive but he's got it in a external Firewire casing. The problem is that XP ain't recognising it at all, it's not showing in device manager or in disk management.

He's already got an internal DVD-RW which is working fine, also a seperate CD-RW which came with the machine. he does a lot of DVD burning for work which is why he's bought another DVD-RW !!

he did have an external dvd-rw before which worked fine, but he bought this new one as it is faster.
The drive he's just bought is a Panasonic DVR-109 and it's has exactly the same model as the the one he has internally, which works fine.

it didn't come with any drivers as it's supposed to be plug and play, and the internal installed without drivers.

I have tried changing the jmpers from master to slave, and tried cable select, but neither make any difference!

anyone any ideas what the problem could be?

Answer:External f/w DVDRW not recognised

I'd install the new one internally, just to make sure it's good.

Also, while doing the troubleshooting, I'd remove the old one until the new one is running properly.

Trying to recover data from my poorly laptop disc before i reset to factory settings. On my netbook (Win7 Home Premium) i am using some usb connected kit with my 2.5" Seagate disc attached to try to bring it up as an external device to recover my data.
On the netbook, the device is recognised ok in Device Manager but doesn't show up in 'My Computer'. I've tried Disc Management and the disc is shown in the bottom list as Drive 1 and flagged as unallocated - not sure where i go from there. I'm sure i've come across a problem with the ext disc having been Drive C on another system so could clash with the netbook Drive C ?? Any advice greatly appreciated guys.

Bought a new external HDD but my computer won't recognise it. The lights are on but no-one's home, so to speak. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it in again. Tried restarting it with drive attached. Tried it with the supplied 2-headed-USB lead and with a different lead, in several different USB ports - back, front, hub, powered hub. The best result I got was that once the computer tried to load the drivers for the device and then said the device was not recognised and got the "try again or replace the device" message. It doesn't show up at all in the device manager, so I can't even update the drivers to make it work.
This computer has done this before with a couple of other devices -most recently with a hard drive that used to work on this machine until the power supply for it burnt out, but then I had to do a fresh reload of Windows and suddenly the HDD won't show up even with a new power supply.
Usually it's a case of finding drivers or firmware or windows updates that fixes it, but since I bought this from ebay without packaging and don't even know what model the HDD is, I'm going to have trouble finding the right program for this one. The HDD did work for a few minutes on my Windows 7 laptop, so the HDD should be functioning (though it then decided to reject it from that computer, too, so maybe driver issues there, as well?)
Any ideas?

Answer:External Drive not recognised

So, you bought a "new" HDD without packaging and have no idea what brand and model number it is? There's no markings anywhere to signify the model number? Any reputable hard drive maker will indicate this very pertinent information somewhere, in addition to all the stampings of approval from various authorities (UL, CE, FCC, etc). Either the seller stripped off the placard or put the drive in a generic casing, both of which raise the suspicion meter into the uneasy zone. FWIW, I recommend you stick to brand new sealed package HDD's in the future. It brings a peace of mind as well as the recourse to return it or get warranty service. With this particular HDD, you may not even have the chance to return it to the eBay seller if it is established that it is faulty.

If your Vista installed computer has a history of not recognizing other devices, this compounds the problem. But, you say that the HDD worked only for a few minutes in W7 before it ended up "rejected" or not recognized. Maybe you have a bad USB cable. Try swapping that out and getting the HDD to work on your W7 machine before anything else. You want to establish that it's a functioning device before dealing with the problem child Vista computer.

Finally, be sure you've applied SP2 (service pack 2) to Vista and run Windows Update to get all of the latest updates. Earlier versions of Vista had device driver issues that were rectified in SP2 and later.

Answer:Maxtor external hd not recognised

Hi, only guessing, but perhaps when you unplugged your drive it may still have been 'reading' data, in which case you may have unwittingly corrupted the data on the drive and it is now trying to read the data but can't. I am very surprised that it has no on/off switch/button?

Hi,

I was using my external hdd to transfer a bunch of files when it stopped working mid transfer. When I plug it in now the drive starts whirring and the lights come on, sometimes it will pop up in the corner of the screen saying new hardware detected, but its nowhere to be found in 'My Computer'. I have tried to manually assign the drive a drive letter, but it doesn't show up in disk management.

I took the drive to the local computer service guy who tried to put it in a different caddy, but he said because it was WD it had an unusual port which wasn't comparable with his.

Has anyone else had a similar issue, any ideas how to solve it?

Thanks

Dave

Should say, the drive is less than a year old, but I guess WD wouldn't fix it under warranty because the casing has now been opened? I don't mind losing the drive if I can get the data off of it.

the external enclosure is probably dead...pull the hdd and connect it to the INSIDE of a tower or use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. ( I say SAT/IDE because I don't know which yous is)

I have just bought a SATA external enclosure for the hard drive removed from an old laptop.
When I plug it into any of the usb ports on my CQ70 laptop (running Windows Vista home premium) it won't show up in My Computer.
I followed some of the instructions found on these sites and did the following:
right click on Computer, click "Manage" then clicked on "Disk management". Apparently at this stage I should see a list of disks with numbers but all that is showing up is "Disk 0", dvd drive, C: drive and D: recovery drive.

Can anyone help?

Answer:External drive not recognised

Are you sure the old hard drive is functional? What is the indicator light on the enclosure doing?

I have a MECER external drive which suddenly is not recognised by one computer, but is recognised by the other. Both computers have legit XP Professional operating systems which are up to date. I have no problem with my other VANTEC external USB drives.

The MERCER used to work then would not, so I took it to MERCER agent who "repaired" it. Then it worked for a while then stoped again. Took it back to agent who tested it & said there is nothing wrong. Brought it back and it worked - for a while, now its gone again. All along it has always worked on my older 2ND computer.

I have tried different USB ports, changed USB cables, reformated the drive on my 2ND computer - still no luck. I get the message:

"One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it"

Answer:External USB Drive not recognised

No Response? I have done a search on this forum and read through 500 similar threads to mine and still have no answer.

since my drive works on my 2nd computer the drive and the inclosure must be OK? Since both computers have XP Professional does that mean it cant be a problem with the operating system?

So that leaves the computer hardware. Is there a conflict between the inclosure and the motherboard???

Why is the problem not always there??????

Answer:External HDD not being recognised - from today only

Hi, what does disk management show with it plugged in.. can you post a screenshot?

Have you checked device manager for yellow ! with it plugged in?

Hi,
I just had an upgrade to my computer. I had a HDD installed replacing 3 older drives. I need some of the information on the older drives so instead of purchasing 3 sata enclosures I purchased a docking station. But my problem is the computer does not see any of the drives in the docking station. I'm not sure what I should do next. Should I just go out ans spend more one on drive enclosures or is there another way around it?
Thanks
Sandra

Answer:External HDD not recognised by comouter

Right click on computer and select manage, in the left column select disk management, look in the lower portion of the window. Do you see a drive with no drive letter assigned? If so, right click the drive, select change drive letter or path, next window select add, and add a drive letter. If it is a new drive, there should be nothing on it. it may want to 'initialize' it and format it. If it does and there is no data on it, do so, select new simple volume, and when finished it will be usable.

When you first get to Disk Management, you may very well be met with a pop up window that says a drive needs to be initialized, if that happens, click OK and follow the steps of creating a New Simple Volume.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens external hard drive Storagebird 35EV840. When I plug the drive into the computer Windows say drive requires formatting, I click cancel the go into drives and the computer recognises it as a mass storage device but when try and open it I get G:\ is not accessable. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.I have tried this on different computers and none of them can open device. I have quite a lot of data on the device and do not want to lose it. Is there anything I can do to recover my data and fix the drive?

Answer:External HDD recognised but will not open

You can try the Free program http://www.easeus.com/resource/external-hard-drive-not-formatted.htm to recover your data.
(not used the above, but I do use the free easeus Partition Mananger and that is excellent)
It sounds as if the ext HD has become corrupted, probably caused by switching it off while indexing files were still being written to it. Your data should still be there though.

I have had a Maxtor One Touch 11 external HD for about 10 months. Originally, it worked fine, but more recently it is not recognised by XP on my PC. If I switch it on and try run>G:/ (the letter assigned to it), my system hangs. I know there was a thread on this subject some months ago, but the query then was solved when the enquirer discovered his drive was faulty and Maxtor replaced it. My drive is not faulty as it works perfectly ok on my laptop (also running XP). The PC has an Athlon 64 3400 processor, the laptop an Intel Celeron. I have tried connecting the drive both via a USB 2 port and via firewire, but this doesn't cure the problem. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it. The drive was recognised at that stage, but not when I switched it off and on again. In the previous thread, someone suggested leaving the external drive on, and rebooting, but this is not possible as it is not recognised as a slave drive. When I boot I do get a message now that gearsec will not load - I believe that is something to do with USB drives. Is that by any chance part of the problem? I'm sure there used to be an article on this on the microsoft site, but I cannot now find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:External Harddrive - not recognised by XP

Have you looked in Disk Management to see if the drive is there. It may have taken the same drive letter as one of your other drives and just need its letter changing?'Control Panel, System Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management' or right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management.

Hi. Christmas Day - yet again. How fast they seem to come round these days! Well, Happy Christmas to all ...

OK, USB drives then: I have three here which are powered by the USB bus (i.e. no a/c power source necessary, or indeed, possible). They all work fine with my laptops (XP and Win7), but I am trying to copy data to my mother's PC and it won't recognise them at all. When I plug them in I get a clicking sound, like a watch being wound, but that's all. Nothing appears in Device Manager when I plug the drive in, nor in Disk Management. When I first tried this yesterday, I got a 'newdev.dll' error message, as far as I recall it was "Error in Newdev.dll Missing entry: Client Side Install" - I copied the dll file over from my laptop, but as I suspected, no change. The error message doesn't come up any more (after a reboot), but same issue..

I have Googled this and of course there are thousands of possible threads to look at but I haven't found one that gives me a lead. One suggests repairing Windows from the installation disc, but I'd rather not do this - it's not SO vital I copy this data that I go through a repair process, which I know from when I have run Windows repair on my own PCs, does change settings: as this is not my PC I don't want to give my aged mother a headache when she finds things have changed from what she is used to.

That said, if anyone can help, given I can't even see the drives in DM, that... Read more

MS works hard to keep Win7 off of HD's, and even when its done it runs like a dog.

Unplug the external and all other drives and peripherals, Boot into Win7 installer System Recovery Options to open a Command Line, confirm the 100mb System Reserved partition (preferred if you have it) or C is Partition Marked Active and then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Thank you in advance to any help I receive. Here is my story...

My Versa NEC E2000 notebook has had several problems under warranty since purchased under lease 2.5yrs ago - it's had 3 hard drives and 1 motherboard replaced under warranty. NEC advised a global replacement program for the battery.
So I had my hubby undo the base of the computer to check out whether my battery part number fell into the range requiring replacement, which he did so that I could submit it to NEC for replacemt Since then (don?t why seeing the 2 areas aren?t connected?) my DVD/cd drive has been faulty. It intermittently will not read cds/dvds and won?t write new discs PLUS it makes this awful ?whirring? and ?scraping noises? when you press the eject button & close unit (whether disc in it or not) or upon start-up.

Basically I couldn?t rely on it & because it was similar to problems that occurred when I ended up with the other warranty repairs I began to freak I would lose my data & programs. I had a small portable external hard drive which I kept as much pictures (semi pro photographer so I have 1000s of digital files) and business data on as possible - I had tried backing up to it but it wouldn?t take the everything on my notebook plus the stuff already on small drive. Seeing I couldn?t write stuff to cd/dvds we decided to go and buy bigger external hard drive. (I have virus/adware/spy scanning in place & used to backup to discs and/or my small ex... Read more

The drive has been making noises ever since (10mins +) but it doesnt show up on my computer still. Please please help me. I am going crazy here wondering what the heck is going on. If i have to return the maxtor under warranty and my NEC under its extended warranty then fine - but i really want my data back first.

Hi, I'm new to the forum so apologise in advance if I'm a little technically incompetent. I have viewed other similar posts on this forum but none seem to have the same specific issue that I'm facing.
I have just bought a new HP Envy 17 and am attempting to connect two external ASUS VE228H monitors, one via a direct HDMI cable and the second to a USB port via a UV +39.

Cables and monitors all work fine on another laptop but the new computer does not recognise the two monitors at all. The Intel(R) HD Graphics driver is up to date, as is windows but still in the Screen Resolution area, they do not appear. I have also been through the process of uninstalling, cleaning (via Displaylinks 'Cleaning Tool') and re-installing the Displaylink driver but still not luck.

Extremely frustrating! Please could someone help?

Much appreciated and thank you in advance.

Answer:External ASUS VE228H not recognised by Win 8.1

Hi, for anyone interested, I rang HP support and they remoted into my system and whilst changing the settings and manually updating drivers they now seem to work, however one monitor still does not work with HDMI directly, only through the USB adapter.

Hi All,A friend has given me their laptop HD in the hope that I can recover the data from it.The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5003, and the issue they saw was that on booting Windows, the laptop would get to a point where it was showing the XP splash screen and then just restart and this would just cycle round and round.I expected that I would be able to put the laptop's HD In my 2.5" USB HD case and then plug it into my PC and browse the files on there, but this does not work for some reason. The PC does not even mount the HD so it's visible in My Computer, and when I look at Disk Management, the disk does not appear in there either.Clearly the HD is not completely dead because it gets half way through the boot process in the Acer laptop, but despite this something is preventing me from seeing the HD.Has anyone seen this behaviour before? Any ideas about how to recover the data on the laptop HD?One more bit of (possibly relevant) info - the first (hidden) partition on the laptop HD has an image of XP on it so that the laptop can be restored to default settings. Could this be part of the problem? Thanks allRob

Good Evening, i need some help!

For the past month i have been trying to free up my computer by moving all my music and itunes from the computer's hard drive to an external drive i recently bought. Sounds easy huh?

Since day 1 the drive has not worked (although it formats fine i can't seem to get data on there) and a couple of days before this my ipod would not be recognised in itunes and update as normal. I think the external drive is fine but when i tried it on an old computer it did not show up. So i started investigating...

Been getting the message on the new Buffalo hard drive=

"F: is not accessible. The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded."

After doing some research i have got a hint that the issue may lie with malware / windows due to malware and possibly effecting both.

But one can only guess?...I'm a total novice in computers really need some advice as i don't want to reinstall and risk losing anything or ruin my computer so it has even more disfunctionality for the other users. I'm using Windows XP + SP-2 btw.

With the Ipod i've tried the basics (using a different usb, restarting the computer, re-installing itunes, restoring the ipod which never finishes so i'm left back on square 1.) The ipod used to show up in my computer and now does not and it's the same with this new external hard drive.

I've run SuperAntispyware and previously Malwareby... Read more

So when you insert it you do not get the beep noise or anything from your laptop?

Also in Device Manager, it doesn't show up? (Start-->Run-->devmgmt.msc)
And there aren't any yellow querried symbols in Device Manager?

If No, then I'd say hardware issue on the card, or the pcmcia connector in the laptop

I recently installed lockngo (click here) and synctoy (click here). Dont know if this is related to the problem but seems to coincide with the problem starting.I installed those two programs on my USB pen drive.Anyway, whenever i plug in my external HDD, or a pendrive, or i put a memory card in the card reader, they are not recognised. A sound is made (letting me know that the computer recognises somethings plugged in) but there is nothing in my computer. However, if I right click on "My computer", then "manage" then "disk management", i see everything I have plugged in in that window. I can then right click on my drive and click "Open" and it will open.Another thing that happens when i plug in a drive is that Adobe Lightroom opens automatically. That never used to happen.I have windows xp. Any ideas?thanks

Answer:External drives not recognised. This is annoying!

I would say that this 'problem' is almost certainly the result of a setting in Locngo - though I am not familiar with that particular program. I would advise you to check its settings to see if I am correct or not. If you still have the problem, un-install Locngo and see if the problem disappears - you can always re-install again later.
