avast internet security: file system shield

Question: avast internet security: file system shield

Purchased avast internet security in November 2011. It's suddenly stopped working. "Fix Now" button not responding and unable to restart program as I'm being advised that the file system shield is unreachable! Any idea what's happened? Please help.

Preferred Solution: avast internet security: file system shield

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: avast internet security: file system shield

You have posted this twice - to avoid confusion:-
Please tick this thread as resolved (click the rigt hand column) and do as suggested in the other thread and reinstall avast.

I am having a problem in my sister's laptop. She does have antivirus installed (AVG Internet Security). However, its license expired, so I downgraded it to free version. After, downgrading it, I installed Avast! as it's antivirus and decided to uninstall AVG. Then, a few minutes ago after rebooting the laptop, a window opened saying that Trojan is infecting my computer, I heal it.. Then, another pops out. Heal and heal and heal..

After doing it, I rebooted the laptop thinking that it will refresh the system. Unfortunately, after rebooting, I cannot connect to Internet now. :cry :cry :cry Help me please? I already performed the Malware removing however, it did not help the laptop. I attached the files you asked me.. Please, help please? Thank you!

Hello,
For several days AVAST keeps popping up all the time messages like this one:

Hello Guys,
My system:
Toshiba  / Satellite C55-A   /  Intel ® Celeron  ® N2820
64 bit Windows 8.1
I am at the end of my rope. I have tried everything. First, let me say I am not good at technical things on a computer, just enough to be dangerous. So if some things I say seem crazy, they probably are.  So here is the story. About a week ago I received a email on my go daddy webmail.  www.login.securserver.net. That is how I long into that email. Now, that is not my main email. My main email is gmail, which I use the most.
The email I received on the go daddy email was a Notice of Apperance in Court #00406341. It contained a zip file,  Court Notification 00406341.zip.   Of course being stupid, I unzipped the file, thinking it was something important, since I have some court cases ongoing for business.
With research  I think it is a Kuluoz or another one that starts with  A.  cant remember.
It put a zip file in my downloads folder  Court_Notification_00406341.doc, which shows as File Type: Java Script file, 8.84kb.  That is the only one I noticed, not sure if they are more somewhere.  Then things started getting a little weird. Nothing major, I still get emails, still send them, and my system seems to be running normally, except for Avast Mail Shield security exclusions ,  It keeps poping up at least 40 times a day, saying

Now, here I used to get different info, like websit... Read more

hi,

We will start with FRST to remove some items from the log.

Usually Iam only on this site once or twice per day so you may not get a reply from me until the next day.

Copy/paste whats below in the box into notepad. Save it as fixlist.txt in the same location you have FRST, your desktop. Click the FRST icon like before and this time click on the fix button just once. When done you will find a fixlog on your desktop. Please post the fixlog in your reply. Machine may reboot to finish the process.

Q. 1.There is a Heuristic Scale and Test Whole file box in File shield.
Should I Scale up it to high (from normal) and check the "Test whole File" box, for better protection?

Q 2. There are two tabs in File Shield settings, "Scan when opening" and "Scan when Writing"
Should I tick the Scan All files in both Opening and Writing for better Protection? (It will scan all files that are being opened or written in the system but there will be negative impact that IDC)

Q. 3. Should I tick "All Packers" or go with Default packers.

Q. 4. Should I activate Avast Aggressive Hardened mode because I don't like Voodooshield as it shows its Pro Version Advertisement in every Startup which is too much annoying for me.

Hello!

I installed Avast recently and have the premium trial version of it at the moment. Every so often, there's a notification that pops up with "Avast! Web Shield has blocked a harmful webpage or file", and some random website. It notifies that it's running through Chrome even when I'm not currently running it (I'm mostly using Firefox). I believe my computer may be infected because I started seeing ads that appear normally where they shouldn't (with a description like ads by deall2ddeualit), and some Firefox addons that enabled these ads that were installed without me knowing about it.
Somewhat related, I allowed a scan from Avast of the computer files while it was booting up and accidentally unplugged the power which turned off the computer mid scan. When I booted it up again, I was entered into something like a temporary account where all my saved documents were pretty much gone. After another reboot, it did the same thing except now it stated that the copy of windows was not genuine. And after a third reboot, everything seemed restored. However, it feels as though start up is somewhat slow now. I'm not quite sure what happened here.
I'm not quite sure where to start, but I believe I need to provide a log? How do I go about doing that?

I keep getting messages from avast saying it is blocking a webpage or file. My task manager shows there are a lot of processes running. My computer is acting really slow now, and it started making buzzing noises, and on startup the fan is making an incredible racket as well. Malwarebytes hasn't found anything. What should I do? I saw other people post, but there were warnings not to repeat these things.

Each warning has three fields, object: infection: and Process:
usually says http;//f0fff0...... or fa8072 or maybe go.wymedia

infection is always url mal

2 or three days ago I started having frequent messages from Avast! about harmful pages.
Ex. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=mt76m0&s=8#.U5n3YfldWSo

The gist of the message is:

Object: hxxp://getmeegan.info/?e=svon&publisher=1091&dd=4&country=US&ind=531952001116606

Infection: URL:Mal

Process: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

Avast! takes me to this page when I click more details on the pop-up: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=epoho6&s=8#.U5n4VPldWSo

The messages information have been consistent, the same Object, Infection type, and Process.

My laptop has been fine except I get constant messages from Avast causing me to worry.

Just like what is described in these two topics (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/531503/avast-web-shield-has-blocked-a-harmful-webpage-or-file-coming-up-all-the-time/ & http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/537505/avast-web-shield-has-blocked-a-harmful-webpage-or-file-coming-up-frequently/).

As in the other posts my laptop restarted itself last night and since then whenever I have been connected to the internet I keep receiving notifications from Avast saying that a threat was blocked:

Object:http://getmeegan.info/?e=svon&cht=2&dcu=1&cpatch=2&dcs=1&pf=1&publisher=1091&dd=4&country=AU&.....

Infection:URL:Mal

Process:C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

The notifications are all the same and come in pairs(two at a time), I have tried following this guide with no luck (http://necroneurology.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-EASILY-remove-the-svchostexe-Trojan)

If anyone has anytime to help out I would be really grateful.

Hello! Hope I'm in the right place!

Last night I was just playing RuneScape and had two safe webpages open, when suddenly my computer restarted on its own for no reason. After restarting, I logged back in and now my Avast! keeps popping up saying that it has blocked a malicious URL, even when I'm not using the internet. Here is what it says:

avast! Web Shield has blocked a harmful webpage or file

Object: (Various, I will post pictures)

Infection: URL:Mal

Process: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

I have ran Malwarebytes, Rkill, aswMBR, and Avast, all have come up clean except Malwarebytes, I will post my logs for aswMBR and Rkill as I do not know how for Avast! and every time I try to export my log for MBAM it keeps crashing.

This isn't affecting my computer's performance, other than the MBAM thing, but it is very annoying and I hope someone can help me solve this issue.

I have looking at my network shield in Avast! Pro. I've noticed that whenever I open save file prompt I see http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ spike.
It does not indicate infection and just goes on, is this stuff normal?

Malwarebytes doesn't see anything wrong. I generally get a http://192.168.1.1:5678/igd.xml spike precedes the 127... spike

Avast boot scan also finds nothing
Typing http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ into Run gets "Bad Request - Invalid Hostname

HTTP Error 400. The request hostname is invalid."
Can anyone else on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit try this for themselves?

Open a save file prompt and look at your network shield at the same time and see if that connection or a similar connection shows up.

I don't seem to have any weird issues otherwise.

I have attached the DDS stuff

Answer:Weird spike in Avast network shield whenever opening a save file prompt

Answer:Avast realtime shield constantly pops up infections when connected to internet

Hello and welcome.  Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.”  Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean! Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.   Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.Press Scan button. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply. The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Confuse between Avast Free and Avast Internet Security .. In terms of memory usage. Which will use less CPU and RAM?
Can you help me?

Answer:Avast Free and Avast Internet Security ( in terms of memory usage )

I know that the free version is light weight but Internet Security may be higher considering that it uses a firewall and various other stuff. But to be honest I have no idea. I would recommend trying to trial version of Internet Security and see how it does and then try out the free version.

AIS has SecureDNS.

A user in Avast forum mentioned "It is programmed so that it is used, and not your isp or other dns services".

I think during install this should be mentioned that SecureDNS enabled will use Avast DNS instead of ISP DNS or system DNS.

SecureDNS enabled gives randomly "check if the site name entered is correct".

SecureDNS disabled gives no probs.

And this is confirmed. I am checking for past few days.

Anyone with the prob?
And does SecureDNS has malware/phishing protection?

Answer:Avast SecureDNS in avast Internet Security?

SecureDNS is design to provide protection against hijacking webpage which translates the web address to IP to determine if its in blacklist + in my view the malware/phishing protection may already incorporate in Web shield so there's no problem if both turn on.

I haven't used avast for a while so I thought of downloading it and trying.

The other day I was looking to avast 6 features and I came across this feature called as "SafeZone". I clicked it and it switched me to an avast OS. They only include a browser, no my computer or documents. I thought it will be nice to test malware links in it.

Thanks.

Answer:avast! Internet Security 6 - avast! SafeZone

SafeZone isn't meant for testing malware links, nor is it an OS.

The avast! SafeZone is special web browser in avast! Pro Antivirus 6.x and avast! Internet Security 6.x, which allows you to browse the web in a private, secure environment, invisible to the rest of your system.Click to expand...

Hi,

I unfortunately was infected with the Security Shield virus earlier today, but was able to remove it thanks to your very helpful uninstall guide at (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-my-security-shield). However, I had an issue when I got to Step 18. Windows would not allow me to save the new HOSTS file at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS and instead forced me to save it in the users folder. Is it a problem that I no longer have my HOSTS file saved in the original location?

Thanks in advance!

Were you able to remove the HOSTS file after running the batch file listed in step 17?

I removed Security Shield 2012 from my laptop which has Windows 7. All went well until I got to Step 23 in Bleeping Computer website (.../virus-removal/remove-security-shield). I deleted the HOSTS file and downloaded Windows 7 HOSTS file. However, I can't save it in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS file. Help please?

Kaspersky is the industry leader, you can't go wrong with it. Can't say anything about Avast, never used it.

Hello - this morning I clicked on an image online and ended up with the My Security Shield infection. I successfully went through the removal process as recommended by bleepingcomputer - but have been unable to complete the last step - deleting the HOSTS file. Can someone help me with this? I just went to the cmd prompt and typed in del c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS and was denied. What should I try next?

Thanks so much!

Answer:My Security Shield removal unable to delete HOSTS file

First off any time you use the cmd prompt you have to right click cmd.exe and choose Run as AdministratorYou can navigate there manually by following the path you typed which is:c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTSIf you delete this you can make a new hosts file in note pad.create a note pad file inside of it copy and paste the following text.# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.## This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.## This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one# space.## Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.## For example:## 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.# 127.0.0.1 localhost# ::1 localhostName the file HOSTS without an extension, in other words it does not need .txt in the name.Place the new HOSTS file in your etc folder.Bruce.

I have recently bought a new laptop and I installed norton security standard version no backup
And yesterday I got a new license from the avast giveaway that was posted here on MT
I like how little impact has norton on my system but I don't know if it is good enough for detecting PUP and PUA, and this system might not be always connected to the internet (around 80% of the time),
so do you guys think that avast is a better solution or should I keep norton

Answer:Avast internet security 2016 vs Norton security standard

I vote for Norton.
If you change SONAR to agressive you will have better protection against zero-day threats even offline.( despite Sonar requires on-line connection for better heuristic real-time protection. )
Norton is lighter, Its improved performace and, I think if you are 80%of the time not connectec to internet, norton gives you a very good layer of protection

I am running Windows 7 - 64 bit on my laptop. I currently have Avast Internet Security installed and I have tried to uninstall the Avast software as I wish to change my antivirus software. I have tried uninstalling in safe mode using the Avast Clear utility. Unfortunately after using this utility the Avast program still remains on my hard drive in Program Files which I then have to delete manually. After doing so and restarting my computer I have no internet connection and the only way I can restore my internet connection is by copying the Avast program back into my Program Files. I just removed the trojan Security Shield from my computer (Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32-bit, copyright 2007) thanks to your step-by-step tutorial (THANK YOU!)
I got Security Sheild somehow right inbetween deleting an old antivirus program and intalling a new one--what are the chances!?
I do have an antivirus program up and running on my system now: ESET Smart Security. I have also scanned my computer with this.

Here's my concern:
Upon rebooting after reinstalling the default HOSTS file, things look different.
The START menu and the whole bottom 'bar' are white instead of the usual Vista appearance.
Also, the Sidebar is white--completely blocking out that section of my desktop background.
When I come online, Internet Explorer toolbars look different as well--looking more like Windows 98 instead of the modern Vista look.

How can I get the toolbars, etc. back to the original Vista style?!

Thanks in advance for any advice/help you can provide.

Does anyone run this Avast Internet Security 5.0? I have the 15 day trial right now and was thinking about purchasing it for 3 PC's the the $60. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Avast Internet Security 5.0??

I run the Anti-Virus, not the full Internet Security suite, but judging by the AV, the suite will probably be quite amazing, I, however, refuse to pay for security software as some of the best programs are free. I know alot of people here like AVAST Anti-virus free edition. What about the paid version "internet security"?

I would assume that it is an entire security suite complete with email and spam protection, firewall etc..

My question is would this be a good suite to get or would buying separate protection elements e.g (anti-virus, firewall, spam and email) from separate manufacturers be better. I hear so much about the Avast anti-virus, but not much on their firewall?? I guess I'm just trying to find something to replace McAfee total protection when my subscription runs out and kind of like the idea of a total suite.

Answer:AVAST Internet security

Am not familiar with the paid edition myself but I have used the free edition for a long time and am extremely happy with it, as are many, many other users, so if that's anything to go by, then it certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a go!

Evening all,

As the title says, I have just installed Avast Internet Security, and now I cannot access the internet without disabling the Web Shield.

I've looked at their knowledge base which, for a computer numpty like me, is not very helpful...

It says...

Check your firewall configuration. For the correct operation the Web Shield process (ashWebSv.exe or aswWebSv.exe) needs a permission to access the Internet on TCP port 80 and a permission to act as a server and accept incoming connections from localhost (the local machine) on TCP port 12080.
Err... What? How do I go about this?

For your information, I have uninstalled Norton 360, and am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Cheers,

Patrick.

Go to add or remove programs and then click on avast and repair it.

Hi,My daughter and I both had the free version of avast! Antivirus on our computers. Before she installed it on hers, however, she had AVG. Hi downloaded Avast Internet Security trial version twice tonight and both times I had to remove it because it stopped my Internet Connection.
It downloaded Ok but Firewall and one of the scanners would not work probably because of the no connection.
Tried everything I could think of and looked at The Network Adapter in device manager and found about 4 or 5 bits and pieces of Avast on there.
That cannot be normal can it.
I think the main cause could be that the Security Center is not running.
Went into services and set it from Manual to Automatic but it still does not run.I pressed run now and it closed with error 5.
I removed MSE to install Avast so don't know if the problem is anything to do with that.
I did a system restore twice to remove Avast maybe I should have used Revo Uninstaller.

I'm helping my friend's mother setup her new laptop. Bran new windows 8(wow is that different) from Best Buy. Being from best buy and all, it of course has all sorts of software that it doesn't need. She put on Avast as that's what my friend told her to do, as that's what I usually put on for people since it's FREE and a decent program. The question/problem:It came with Kaspersky Internet Security (NOT installed). My first thought was that, it doesn't need it. But, I started to consider installing it for one reason. My friend's brother is living at his mom's house again and he uses the laptop as well. Now a couple years back when my friend was still living there himself, his brother used his computer a lot. (my friend is blind). While cleaning up my friend's computer I often found traces of, well... visits to sites that my friend didn't appreciate his brother visiting. I don't think I need to explain that further. Now, this is something that the mother is completely unaware of, at least as far as I know... they're all grown adults and all. Not my place to bring it up. I don't know if he plans on using her laptop for such things.... SO... looking at the back of the kaspersky internet program it mentions parental controls. I was thinking, maybe I could set some things up so it's more difficult for him to visit such sites... something that none of them even need to know I did. I decided that since th... Read more

How to setup Avast Internet Security for Maximum Protection (2016 Guide)

As for malwarebytes and zemana, since their both free options you can have both stored on your pc and run weekly or monthly scans with them.

I would also recommend malwarebytes 3 over 2. It has come a long way and is not nearly as buggy as it was when it was first released. I would not suggest running outdated software. Malwarebytes 3 is their baby now. Not 2.

When I click it and the Windows Security Center comes up, it says under Malware protection that no program is found for Virus protection.

My question is Avast, without paying for anything, better protection than Trend Micro Internet Security Pro?

If I had to install Avast with Trend Micro still on the computer would it cause a interference and freeze it up?

Answer:Trend Micro Internet Security Pro or Avast

There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware.IMO avast Internet Security is just as good as Trend Micro Internet Security Pro.See the IMPORTANT NOTE about not using more than one anti-virus program in this topic: Choosing an Anti-Virus Program

Salutations,

I finally figured out that Avast Internet Security is the culprit that is blocking my FTP transfers in Cute FTP and any other FTP program ( i.e. FileZilla ).  What do I do to fix it??

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1
Avast Internet Security v2014.3.0.2011
CuteFTP v9.0.5.0007
FileZilla v3.7.3

What do I do to fix this?  It works fine if I disable Avast.. they changed the interface and I'm a bit lost.  The network application rule has been set to allow all connections for both programs and the windows filewall has passed both of them.

Thank you for your time and effort on my behalf..

Namaste...

well my current firewall is online armor is it worth going with avast for there firewall to?

Answer:Avast 2015 Free vs Internet Security

First of all, Avast 2015 was just released and in my opinion too early to make judgements. Detection rates should be identical assuming both have NG installed and running. Internet Security will have more features.

You can see what's on offer by visiting their new and updated website, http://www.avast.com

Here's a screenshot comparison between Free (left) and Internet Security (right).

Avast Firewall does have some cool tricks with tracking where your Internet-facing application are connecting too - I forgot the name from 2014.

Less than a year ago I purchased a license for Avast Internet Security, mostly I bought it for the firewall so that I could actually have private browsing because I have no choice but to use a public wifi and the wifi I believe has a parental advisory or some kind of setting like that on it. When I first started using the avast once it was activated I had no problems with accessing the sites that I wanted to with no problems but for the past three months or so I have had issues like when I try to go to one of the sites I get blocked by the advisory on the wifi. At that point I went into the program and I selected the option on the firewall to turn off until restart of computer so at that point I restarted the computer and once it came back to the desktop and I opened up my browser and attempted to access the site I was trying to get to it worked, so every time that my firewall seemingly stopped working I went through the same process each time and it worked every time until this most recent time. A little over an hour ago I tried to access one of the sites and I got stopped so I closed my browser and opened Avast I then set the firewall to turn off until computer start then once I closed avast and made sure everything else was closed then restarted the computer, pretty normal for every time this happens, once the computer came back up I opened my browser and attempted to go to the same site and was once again blocked. So I do not know what is going on with the Avast program... Read more

Hiya,

While Scanning with Avast 4.8 Free, I noticed a *.Rar file had a hidden EXE in it. Avast didn't detect anything, neither did Malware Bytes, or Outpost Spyware, etc.

The main problem, is I normally use the Explorer Shell extension on Avast, scanned the file, but it does not list anywhere, on logs etc, what the actual scanned files are? I checked the box, so after it scans shows me total megs scanned, then no threat etc, but doesn't show what files were scanned. The only reason I saw an Exe there, is because it hung a little while scanning, and I saw, a copy of the file name as an EXE. Most likely a virus, but I am very annoyed, I can't slowly see and check the contents of RAR's or Zips under avast. It is only logging if theres a virus, but I know for sure theres an EXE in the Rar file, but Avast says there no virus and thus no log, all my other security programs also aren't going off, no connections on the firewall, nothing strange, except the seemingly EXE file in there.

From what I briefly saw in the file, it was something like True.Crypt, and the file name.exe, some sort of directory like that. If its in a RAR file is that normal?

Also is there a way to manually view all contents in a RAR file without opening it, I use WinRar? Can I see what Avast actually scanned?

Thanks!

ps. I did not open the file, simply scanned it.

Answer:Urgent Avast Security Help Needed, Found Suspicious file, but no detection

A rar functions similarly to a zip file. Do you know where it came from? Did you download software from somewhere in an rar package form.

You could try submitting it to Virustotal and seeing what you get back. It may not scan all the files in a rar if there are a lot. http://www.virustotal.com/

For the record though, rar file with exe inside is not an indication of a virus. Maybe its just TrueCrypt in a rar file. Depending on the location of the file, you should have a pretty good idea where it came from. ("Did I download this to my desktop")

I really like Avast AV very much. I have a question about the Web Shield part of the program. On the program itself, generally 6 of the 7 modules are running. I do not have Outlook or MS Exchange so for that area the program says, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." (or something like that.)

About once a month, maybe twice a month, I will notice 5 of the 7 providers running and the program will have one of the Web Shields running. However, it will say, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." (instead of saying, "The Provider is currently running." The funny part is that when I go to webpages and do a check, the Web Sheld is still scanning them. So on the Web Shield thing, what is Avast waiting for?

This is a common issue with the program based on Internet Searches. I don't know if this is a bug or the way that Avast 4.8 works. Can you also provide information about the two different shields that the program uses? One is the Web Shield, the other is called the P2P Shield.

The updates are working fine. Oh, it hasn't happend often enough, but so far the only way that I can get the Web Shield back to not saying, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." is to do a reboot.

Verdict
From the firewall to the spam filter, the sandbox to the new network scanner, there's a lot to like about Avast Internet Security 2015. Experts will appreciate its extreme configurability, too. But Avast's distinctly average protection scores from labs including AV-Comparatives and AV-Test are a significant concern, and this core antivirus issue makes the suite hard to recommend.

We Like
Smart firewall, accurate spam filter, SafeZone protects your privacy, handy new network scanner, highly configurable, some detailed Help pages

We Don't Like
Unimpressive detection results with independent testing labs, can interfere with some legitimate applications, some tools require extra spending to be useful

Self-explanatory title; Why was Passive Mode added to Avast? Was it highly requested or internally implement to improve compatibility with Windows Defender on Windows 10?

What are your thoughts and opinions on Passive Mode for Avast?

Answer:Why did Avast add Passive Mode? And Internet Security it needed?

I believe Passive Mode is simply a bypass for the whole "Uninstall other AV products" page that you get when you try to install a new protection suite over an existing one. For example, if you have EIS installed, and you try to install Avast, it used to inform you that EIS must be removed first. Passive Mode will bypass that and install Avast anyway with Passive Mode auto-enabled.

Not a whole lot of user posts about Passive Mode so far, but this seems to be the gist of it.

Anybody know which one is overall better, Mcafee Total Protection 2010 or Avast Internet Security pro?My Mcafee subscription ends soon so i am looking for any good deals i can find on anti-virus software. I noticed that Mcafee brought their price down on their Total Protection 2010 to $39.99 (3 user license, 1 year), which is cheap! Although, i found a better deal on Avast Internet Security pro, which was $99.95 (3 user license, 3 years). So this comes down to the main question, Which one should i buy?? Thank you in advance!

Answer:Mcafee Total Protection vs. Avast Internet Security

Personally I would go for one of the freeware options.

So i ran across a website in hunt for a new wallpaper in google images. The site (***.ryylxjw.com) was instantly blocked by Avast as infectious.
As far as i can tell Avast blocks 15 items on the site and refuse to open it. Seen in retroperspective i should have noticed that the url was, lets say, a bit odd but i didnīt check at the time since i was clicking on an image.
You can see what image i was clicking on in the upladed image.

Anyway, i went to VT and scanned the url and the scan says 0/68. So now iīm a bit lost to what Avast is protecting me from?
Is it a real threat or a FP???

Not sure if this is the correct forum but i had a hard time finding a place for this question.

Answer:Avast blocks site but VT Internet Security all green.

Are you sure than you are not infected?

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I need protection. It only has 1GB of RAM, so would I get Avast! free 5.1 or Comodo internet security 5.0? I was thinking of maybe MSE 2.0, but heard it is not RAM friendly.

Answer:Avast! Free 5.1 final vs Comodo Internet security 5.0

I wouldnt use Comodo AV since its hasnt been tested and it has an okay detection. The backbone of the whole suite of comodo is the D+ which is a HIPS.

Why not use Avast Free + Comodo FW w/ D+? You get a very good AV and an excellent firewall+hips program.

Hello, which is better? Norton Internet Security 2011 or Avast! free 5.0? Which one will slow down my computer more, or has higher detection rates?

Answer:Norton Internet Security 2011 vs Avast! Free 5.0

The best in the opinion of most does not even seem to be listed. Microsoft Security Essentials, gets high marks in all areas. Its free, too. It has a good malware engine and works great with the Windows Fire Wall.

Shared Antivirus
Avast's lab test scores range from best to worst. It received AAA-level certification fromDennis Technology Labs and rated Advanced+ in two tests by AV-Comparatives. However, "crazy many" false positives caused it to fail the file detection test from that same lab. Bitdefender and Kaspersky generally take top scores across the board.

In my own hands-on malware blocking test, Avast earned 9.0 of 10 possible point, better than most products tested using this same malware collection. Webroot SecureAnywhere Internet Security Plus (2015)earned a perfect 10 in this test.

My malicious URL blocking test uses newly-discovered malware-hosting URLs, typically no more than four hours old. When I challenged Avast with about 100 of these, it blocked all access to 29 percent at the URL level and eliminated another 43 percent during download, for a total block rate of 72 percent. That's quite good, though McAfee Internet Security 2015 managed to block 85 percent.

Good, Not Great
Avast Internet Security 2015 offers almost all of the expected suite components (parental control is the exception), but their effectiveness varies. I like the innovative home router scan; this is an area that most vendors overlook. And Avast offers plenty of other bonus features. The problem is, top suites just do a better job overall.

Hello,

My son got into some bad stuff which led me to this forum a few months back. After some research I went with Avast Anti Virus (free version), Malware Bytes (paid version), and Comodo Firewall (free version). I have had a lot of slow behavior when surfing and doing email. The cursor is unstable and I cannot type things without a long wait. I turned of the Avast Behavior Shield and everything is a lot better. What have I lost turing off this feature? There are still several other Avast Shields running along with the Malware Bytes and Comodo.

Any suggestions? Should I try a different AV program?

Thanks,

Dave

Answer:Avast 5 Behavior Shield Slows Down XP?

hello daveplaysbass,The behaviour shield is a bit of a mystery! There's quite a few questions about it on the Avast forums and no real answers. I think the guys on there have been waiting for months for a 'promised' explanation from an Avast official. Found out a few things tho. This is a quote from an interview with a Avast official ...."The Behavior Shield that we shipped in version 5.0 is a new component that is going to be further developed moving forward. For example, in version 5.1, we will be adding more sensors that will allow for even finer-grain filtering. For now, the Behavior Shield is focused on exploits coming via typical mechanisms (browser, PDF reader, and flash vulnerabilities, for example). It also closely monitors all kernel-mode code (drivers) loaded into the operating system, and is able to detect zero-day rootkits."So whilst it's new and not operating at it's fullest potential, it still is an important part of Avast! It's not supposed to use hardly any system resources, but a few people have had problems with it conflicting with other software. One person had the problem of it conflicting with the 'Payed' version of Malwarebytes. And thats interesting because my set up is the same as yours, Avast(free), Comodo firewall(free) but i have the Free version of Malwarebytes, and i have no problems with conflicts. Its worth checking to see if there's any information in the Behaviour Shield report( at the bottom of the Behaviour shield page) in th... Thanks for your time.

I just installed Antivir and felt naked without a web shield, so I reinstalled everything in Avast! except the standard shield.

In theory, this should work, however the apps froze on startup, so I set Avast! to launch after all other applications load and they seem to like each other now.

What I'm here to ask is whether this should theoretically cause any problems.

Please don't reply with, "OMG YOU ONLY NEED ONE ANTIVIRUS" because I am only running one antivirus. My reasoning for running both apps is so that the Avast! web shield will take effect during browsing, and Avira will handle everything locally. The issue I have with using Avast! for everything is that it seems to constantly scan all my files, without letting me set it to just "scan on application read/write" which causes major slowdowns.

I recently went from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5 and am pleased with the new version. I note that it has a Behavior Shield and can't recall if the earlier version also had. What I would like to know is this: does the Behavior Shield make Threatfire, which I also use, redundant?

Unfortunately, although I tried to glean an answer from Avast's Help Center, I do not know enough about computers to know what the description there of the Behavior Shield amounts to: it 'monitors all activity on your computer and detects and blocks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware. It does this by continuously monitoring your computer's entry points using special sensors to identify anything suspicious.'

I have XP, SP 3.

Thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Avast 5's Behavior Shield and Threatfire

Behavior shield - monitors all activity on your computer and detects and bloxks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware.
