+++ Buffalo 500gb external USB drive ++

Question: +++ Buffalo 500gb external USB drive ++

I have just got a Buffalo 500gb external hard drive, it has installed perfectly on my windows XP laptop, however when I try and install it on my other laptop with Windows vista, it starts that "device driver install" icon in the system tray but when I click on "my computer" from the start menu I cant find the drive!! - the funny thing is that it DOES appear when I go into the "start" menu and then "control panel" and "system" and then in the "device manager" I can find the Buffalo USB drive called "HD-PVU2" BUT it wont show in the drives on "my computer" and its not possible to transfer data to the drive, any suggestions anyone??? thanks PCDIMWIT

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: +++ Buffalo 500gb external USB drive ++

Go to 'My Computer' and select Manage, then click on 'Disk Management' - right click the drive then choose Format. It should then show ok.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?

Answer:Buffalo 500GB External HD -- missing space?

You could backup all the stuff do your desktop and reformat it but that would take some time copying over 180gb of date.

Format will remove all data on that drive.

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

Hi, does anyone know of "Buffalo"s reliability? It seems my current external drive is about to give up. Its a Western Digital 'My Book' 320gb and its making odd "clicking noises".Yesterday it disappeared from 'my computer' and i eventually got it working after pulling out all the plugs and re-booting pc. The "Buffalo DriveStation" 500gb looks a good buy from for 50. Any thoughts please - Tony

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Answer:Buffalo External Hard drive problem-Help please!

That sounds like an autorun request for the bundled DriveNavi.exe program. And "trawled the net"? . I think you've gotta format the HDD. That might just do the trick.

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Hi, I got the Medion Drive & go, 500gb external hard drive, its installed PERFECTLY on my Windows XP laptop, installed the drive, appears as Drive F on the "my computer" and has already taken a large file of photo's to the drive and stored them and plays them back fine. HOWEVER when I try and install it in my VISTA laptop it says its installed the driver BUT it doesnt show in the "my computer" in start. I seem to remember having this trouble before with this particular Asus Vista laptop with my Buffalo 500gb external drive (though it installed on another Acer Vista laptop no problem!!!) so my question is: how do I "see" where this drive is appearing and how do I "assign" it a drive letter?? thanks PCDIMWIT

Answer:+++ Assign a drive letter for Medion 500gb external drive ++

Firstly, I seem to remember that this Drive is USB Powered.
It is quite likely that the USB Ports of your Laptop do not deliver sufficient power to run the Drive. You may need something like this
On the point of assignation of a Drive letter. The PC/Laptop will assign it a suitable Letter every time it is plugged in.There is no reason that this should be the same every time. It will depend on the number of USB Devices you have plugged in already.

Okay, hey guy, here is my problem.

I've had this drive for a little while now, worked flawlessly for ages. I put movies and stuff on it and then watch it on my Xbox, I had about 30GB worth of data on it.

Now, what I want to do is: Format/reset the drive BACK to FAT32, it is currently in the "RAW" state. I have NO idea how this happened, I havent dropped it or anything it literally happened overnight. Have tried formatting at least 6 times, it always says "Format could not complete".

When I try to open it in my computer it just says "H: is not accesible, the parameter is incorrect". Have tried deleting the voume in disk management, that doesn't work either. Tried formatting through CMD, doesnt work.

I'm lost for ideas. Is my drive just screwed? I'm not bothered about getting the data back, I just want it to work again so I can get it back to FAT32 format.

Many thanks.

I am using a AMD Athlon XP 1.4 GHz with 480 MB RAM tower. I have purchased a 500GB external hard drive. It does appear as the G: drive when I "plug and play" . I am using a high speed USB port. I am trying to drag and drop music files into it and it works for about 30 seconds and then my whole system "Locks up". The drive light stays lit bright red and the computer is unaccessible even after I shut the drive off. I returned it to the company that I purchased it from and was told that it bench tested "OKAY". It still doesn't work. This unit was formatted NTFS. Any suggestions?

Answer:500GB external drive locks up

I have had this case on my 250 GB external hd. Best thing to do is NOT write anything else, to it, backup the files to DVD or some other location. Re-format it again and copy the files back.
A corrupt file or filesystem may be causing the lockups. I would NOT try a repair unless you want to risk loosing all files on the disk.

I am considering adding a 500GB external drive (via a USB 2.0 port) to my Windows XP system, which is a Mesh Athlon-based PC built in 2001, to store phots, music etc. (No applications)When I upgraded the internal drive from an 80GB to a 300GB drive 18 months ago, I had real problems as the BIOS would not recognise drives beyond 100GB. After updating the BIOS I ended up with a system that thinks the IDE-connected drives are actually SCSI drives. (See Helproom thread click here if you are interested in this problem!)Re the new external drives, I have two questions:1. Is there a limit (in terms of disk size) as to what an older XP system might recognise, when an external disk is connected via a USB port?2. What software is available to parition a 500GB drive? (I think Partition Magic only goes to 300GB.)Thanks for your help.Tallboy

Answer:Adding a 500GB external drive to Windows XP

1. I'm not sure there is, but it's certainly not less than 500GB.2. Why do you want to partition? It's not necessary to partition an external drive, just use different folders.

Hi, I bought a Seagate 500gb external hard drive in February and have put everything on it. A few weeks ago it started to disconnect itself when in use and I soon realised that the USB cable was loose when plugged into the hard drive. It got to the stage that it would just fall out of the hard drive even when no pressue or movement was applied. Last week I put the cable back in but it felt different so I had a look and the hard drive's USB connector had completely come away from the hard drive and disappeared inside! I moved the hard drive around until the connector could be seen from the USB gap but there's no way I can re-attach it. I emailed (where I purchased it) and they have agreed to pick it up next week and possibly repair it if they can. Although this is good as it means I haven't lost any money I'm really worried I'm going to lose everything! I literally put all my music, movies, uni work, pictures, etc onto it and deleted them off my laptop as my laptop was so full. Is there any way I can 're-back-up' all my files? Do you think when they repair it everything will be lost? Thanks for reading

Answer:Strange problem with WD 500GB external hard drive

Ok been working on this problem since posting question with a friend.

Confirmed its a FAT32 error

opened cmn and ran CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v

when it asks for what drive use My Passport

if it asks for dismount i selected yes

i then received an error saying the volume has inconsistencies so i ran chkdsk e: /f

when that finished i ran the CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v which worked and im now filling up my external hard drive once again!

IMPORTANT - to ensure you dont loose any valueable data on your drive backup before trying this, this worked for my and I cant guarantee this will work for everyone.

Hope it helps someone out there.

My seagate external drive has stopped working. I looked in device manager and it is there and saying its working properly. Its also listed in disk management showing as RAW and read only. I've tried numerous recovery software with no success. Teskdisk reported read error and found no partitions. Easeus wizard recovery scanned for hours and found no files. I have a lot of precious files on the hard drive which I would hate to lose. I do get a window up saying the drive in question needs to be formatted, I know that if I do this I will lose all my data. In desperation I clicked ok for this but even the format was not successful. I have also taken the hard drive out of its enclosure and is now plugged into a hard drive docking station. This made no difference.

any helpful advise?

Answer:hard drive woes seagate external 500gb

If both TestDisk and Easeus have failed then you may be out of luck. If the data is truly important then sometimes its best to seek assistance from a data recovery firm as sometimes accessing the drive only makes it worse. You could try one of these for that:

When a drive fails sometimes data recovery is not possibly at all or only through data recovery companies.

This is why backups are so important and why you should invest in a backup drive or online backup in the future.

PC runs Slow when Connected to Maxtor 3200 500GB USB External Drive(works OK when connected to a much newer laptop)As soon as I connect up this external drive my CPU hits 100% usuage and the machine runs extremely slow. USB drivers show Enhanced and working properly in device Manager.I have a Genuine Intel Pentium 3 - 1GHZ with 1GB RAM, and just added a USB2 PCI card to maximise the benefit of USB2 transfer speed. My problem appears to be with the reaction of the CPU to this drive. Any ideas please, spent many hours looking on the web to no avail. I have seen many blogs about problems of transfer speed but this does not seem to be the cause. Yes transfer is slow but the machine runs annoying slow(almost to a stop)when connected so I can't compare the speed. Hello all, I am at my wits end and i wonder if anyone can help. I have a 500GB external iomega hard drive. I had only used it a handful of times to back up such things as holday snaps and my itunes music and video library. This was basically to free up my laptops memory.
I then plugged into the usb port on my PS3 console and found it was in FAT32 so dragged game saves across to do the same thing for my PS3. I then used it to drag music to my iphone and left it for a week, however now the PS3 wont recognise it and nor will my computer , and i have no idea why not.
There is power to the hard drive via external 12v power source and the blue light on it shows that power goes to it, but when plugged to any other console or laptop it does not show signs of being read.
Any one able to shed light on this and help with an answer?

Hello. Recently I split my 500GB into two volumes halving it into 250GB for each volume. One volume, which is the G:, is a FAT32 format, and the other "H:" is NTSC. I performed this on a XP, then recently I got my new computer I tried plugging in the external but it only read the FAT32 one. And on disk manager it shows both of them, but the other one is not readable. I then tried it on my other laptop which is also a Windows 7, it didn't show either. I have really important files in there. What can I do? Please help

Answer:External Hard Drive 500Gb Kingmax Question

Hello tygster, welcome to the forum

I have no idea why this is happening

You could use a live linux CD to allow you to copy the data across to the linux desktop and then format the NTFS partition to FAT 32 before copying the files back to the disc.
Warning because this is a live cd you will not be able to turn your PC during this operation as all files on the linux desktop will be lost.

For heaven's sake please help me. I'm in real trouble. Some months ago I was backing up my files to my new Seagate 500GB external USB drive. Around those days when I was doing the backup we were having intermittent electricity blackouts. I don't have backup power source such as UPS. I think the blackouts messed up the drive. I have two Seagate drives. The problem also happened to the other drive which wasn't used for the backup but I formatted it and it's working fine now. But that backup Seagate has messed up big time.

When I had copied almost 8GB data. The computer couldn't read any further. The light on the drive keep blinking and it said something like 'couldn't read from sector...'. I'm sure physically the drive has no problem.

I think my only option left to retrieve the data is to use SpinRite software. My friend has bootable CD of this software. Please, guide me what else could I do?

Thanks a lot for your time and suggestions.

PS: It's a USB one and I have already taken it out of the enclosure and directly attached to the board but all in vain. It seems only option left is SpinRite.

I can browse this forum for data recovery methods, but before I jump into that, I want to explain the events that led up to this terribleness.

I've been running this external hard drive on my XP desktop for a little over a year and have had no problems. I've plugged it into numerous other XP computers, several laptops running Vista, and even a few Macs. There have been no problems and I've been able to take files on and off with ease on all these different computers. Today though, my friend just bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista, and with my successful history I plugged it in without any doubts... the "installing new devices" thing, then the statement saying that the device is ready to use. But upon trying to browse the device, we get a long loading process that's halted with a "This device is not formatted. Would you like to format it now?". I've read other people's posts of their similar predicaments, but it seems that it's more of a "I just plugged this into a Mac and now I can't access it" thing. I know Sony has a tendency of ruining everything, but I really have a feeling there's something else involved. Something seriously needs to be done about such a ruin-everything process.

If I was a freaker-outer, now would be the time. Years of work gone to waste.

Hi there,

I recently bought a LaCie Starck 500GB external hard drive in order to transfer some files from Windows to a Macbook Pro. However, I can only put some of my files onto a small section of the hard drive. There are two folders: LaCie and EXCHANGE. The LaCie folder has something like 460GB of free space, yet the EXCHANGE only has around 30GB. Also, I cannot transfer new files from my Mac to the folder LaCie on the hard drive.

So, the two problems: EXCHANGE only having a small portion of the free memory; and the inability to transfer documents from my Mac to the folder LaCie on the hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

Help please i have a maxtor 500gb external hard drive that i store all my music on. i was quite happy listening to some when all of a sudden it stopped checked in my computer and the hard drive wasn't listed as being connected. so i presumed it had become unplugged somehow, checked all connections from drive to laptop and they were solid, but it came apparent that the green power light was not on checked the plug and it was still plugged in and when i pull cable out of drive and try plugging it back in the light comes on for a short period of time (1-2 seconds) then goes back out again.
Now i have over 40,000 tracks stored on there 90% are backed up but is this a fault with the drive itself or the power supply unit??

I've dropped my Maxtor 500gb hd by dropping it on quarry tile floor
Took it apart and saw that I've smashed the rear interface PCB - removed the hard drive from its casing to find that it is'nt a SATA connection.
Does anyone know if i can buy any sort of adaptor to link HDD with laptop USB??
I fear that my only other option is to buy a second hand duplicate from ebay (as this item is discontinued) and use its casing.
Please help a thicko in need

Answer:Broken Maxtor Basics 500GB external Hard Drive

I hope they weren't under warranty. Opening the casing voids warranty.

If you opened the casing, you damage your drive. It's closed tight for a reason.

Just get a new Western Digital. Maxtors are dead.

I have a very frustrating problem and hope someone can shed some light on the situation for me.

I purchased a Maxtor Basics 500GB external Hard Drive STM305003EHD301-RK a while back and after having some niggling issues with it for the first couple of weeks it had been working perfectly, no problems at all. I had formatted it and the drive was recognised everytime it was plugged in. I'm running it on my Acer T650, P4, Win XP Media Centre Edition SP3.

This weekend I was visiting some family and wanted to take my drive with me so we could watch some films and listen to some music etc. Nothing out of the ordinary.

So the drive would have been unplugged for the duration of the journey. (It is not the first time the drive has been unplugged.) It was wrapped in a towel and in my rucsack so it was protected from knocks/impact etc.

After getting to our destination I unwrapped it and immediately plugged it in ready to go. The green light came on as usual. After plugging it in to my brother in-law's laptop (he was running Vista) it loaded up, only to say that we needed admin access rights when trying to go into the music folder?!?!

Ok, so we tried the movies folder. It let us in but wouldn't play any of the movies! But it let us copy one of them over to his laptop which then played perfectly.

After removing it safely I thought it might be an XP/Vista compatability problem and tried it on the home desktop they had.

This time, nothing happened at all. No green lig... Read more

I recently purchased a Samsung 2.5" 500GB USB external hard disk on eBay, and received it just this morning. After a bit of testing I decided I wanted to separate it into two partitions (one for data and one for my Wii games). When I tried to do that using Windows XP's disk manager, it went formatted 99% then returned a plain "Format did not complete successfully", with no additional info. Then the hard drive just disappeared. Windows explorer will not detect it (it will make the "USB device connected/disconnected" noises upon plugging it in or unplugging it from the computer however), and neither will the disk manager, which means I can't simply delete the partition and format again. The blue LED indicating connection between the drive and the computer does blink when I plug the drive in, and then it remains static until I unplug it.

Any help is really really appreciated. I'll gladly provide additional information to the best of my knowledge.

Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... Read more

Answer:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

Answer:Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

I recently purchased a Buffalo 2tb usb3 external drive and a icy box usb3 pci card. (See 'New usb3 pci card not mounting usb3 external drive' in this forum for more details.)However, after installing the card in my pcie x1 slot it will let me read everything I put in it which is usb2. But it will not let me mount anything that is usb3.In small print on the Buffalo Manaul which I downloaded from their site, it states:'* A USB3.0 interface manufactured by Buffalo is required to use this drive at SS mode specified by USB 3.0 standard (logical transfer speed 5.0Gbps).'Surely they can't expect us to buy the Buffalo usb3 pci just to get this drive to work! Am sure lots of other people will go for a cheaper pci card that does the same job too. Also, I don't really want to purchase the Buffalo pci card and have the same trouble again as I did already.

As far as I know Windows 7 doesn't support USB 3 yet. Support will be added at a later date, probably incorporated in a Service Pack.

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.

Answer:Solved: Buffalo WLA2-G54C compatible with non Buffalo router?

Eh, never mind. I just went ahead and bought a D-Link DWL-G710 Wireless 802.11g 54 Mbps Range Extender.

Hi there,

Looking to purchase the aforementioned product, can you recommend a reliable one? Not looking to spend too much but need something reliable as we'll be putting alot of digital photos on there.... lots of photos of our baby that if we lost, well I wouldn't know what to do, I'd be so upset. Is an external HDD the way to go or some other method??

Answer:Best external 500GB HDD (on a budget)??

It Depends what you're going to use the External HDD for, because if you are going to use it for just pictures, then i would recomend a 250GB or less... 80GB at minimum.
if you are going to store programs on there or use it as network storage go ahead with a 500GB .
i can find u HDD'd depending on where you live

I had a faulty 500gb Maxtor external HD . It wouldnt be read by any of my computers and when I tried to use it the computer kept saying I have to format it. I used testdisk 7.0 to create a image.dd file of the entire drive. I want some tips on how to properly mount it so that I can recover the as much of the media files & pictures that were on it.

I also wanted to know if mounting it will require another 500gb of space? I only have 32 gb left on the HD that the image file is currently on. Also, will mounting alter the current image file? It took me 10 hrs to create the image file and want to avoid having to start over again from scratch.

Thanks !!

Answer:Need help mounting a 500GB external HD

Well, sadly, you neglected to tell us anything about your computer or your operating system.

That said, you should just be able to connect the new drive via USB and then "see" the drive with Windows Explorer under Computer. From there, you should just be able to copy the files. You should not have "mount" the drive.

That said, I would not get your hopes up too much because it sounds like the drive may have been corrupted. And an image of a corrupted drive gets you a corrupted image.

I got my WD external hdd today, but its not cooperating. When I plug it in, windows recognizes it as an unknown device. I double click on the unknown device, and then I click on driver details. It says that no drivers are installed or not needed. I cant even see the drive in my computer. I looked on some reviews on newegg, and ppl have said it is stock fat32, but that should be affecting it.

My 500GB External Hard Drive will connect to my computer and then disconnect itself whenever I try to access it. I also get a message saying "there might be a problem with some files on this device or disk. This can happen if you remove the device before all files have been written to it." I am using Windows XP on my desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop. I cannot access it with either of these. I have tried to "Scan and Fix" with Windows 7 but to no avail. I have tried quite a bit and I am lost. At the very least I would like to get some of the files off of it. Thank You.

{EDIT] This is a Western Digital My Book 500GB, I have heard of others with this problem, but I cannot get it to work. I believe it came about from me copying a large quantity of files and cancelling the copy.

Answer:Dead 500GB External HDD Help!

Does it give any error messages at all, or just fail to connect to it ? Is that the basic USB only essential edition external drive, or does it also have eSATA connection, if so try that. Try one of these boot capable disks; , then run some hard drive diagnostics tests; or this one; , At the Western Digital web site should be diagnostics software to download and burn to a CD-RW. I think it is called; " Data Lifeguard Tools". Or you can boot to a live Linux CD to mount that drive, and access the folders and files to copy them.

Hi all,

I just received a second WD 500GB, both made into externals by someone on eBay. Having booted the computer with the first External for months, never a whisper of a problem.

Now I try to attach (so software/drivers needed for XP evidently) the 2nd 500BG unit, being identical to the first in every way I can tell. Swapping the one which boots up alone, and fine, several times seems to indicate that both of the drive's are fine.

But when I try to boot with both drives plugged-in, the computer fails to recognize
either drive.

The problem appears (I'm hoping) fairly simple -- obtained from the Device Manager's Universal Serial Bus Controllers/USB Mass Storage Device (there are 2, but the first doesn't seem to be performing any actual function.)

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because there is a duplicate device already running in the system. (Code 42)"

Surely this can't be an uncommon problem, but a few hours of Googling and forum searches got me nowhere. I suppose I could run one of them from the preexisting SATA port in order to get away from the USB, but this sounds like a rather harsh solution to what must certainly be an easier fix. Maybe something as simple as slave jumper settings?
(Which I know nothing about, but we learn what we need to learn.)

BTW, here are my specs, in case any of it matters:

Hello Forum,
I have an old 500bg external hard drive. The thing works great, but over the last 3 years between my massive music collection, and photo hobby, it's almost maxed out. So I bought a 1.5 TB external hard drive...

What I plan on doing: Move the files from the old HD, to my PC (which has 1 TB of space available), then using backup software to keep those files backed up on the shiny new 1.5 TB external.

My question: how do I safely move that data from the old External HD to my PC?
In the past, when I first moved 350+ GB's from my then-PC, to the External HD, it not only took FOREVER, but I ran into some file corruption (some files didn't open, and I lost some music somehow). Now that I have close to 500 gb's, I'm scared that I'll run into trouble with just doing simple copy/paste.

Any advice? Thx in advance! :grinthumb

Answer:Moving data from 500GB external HDD to my PC

Maybe you should try Teracopy.

TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed. It verifies files were copied correctly with a checksum. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives. You can pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.Click to expand...

I haven't tried the program myself, but it's free, and if it does what it says it should be just what you're looking for.

There are also other alternative file copiers.

BTW, the speed depends on how you connect your hdd's, and how many/how big files you have. Many small files take a lot more time to copy than few big files.

I've had problems with this drive when I first hooked it up years ago, but then it was fine until now. It just seems to be disconnecting. It's working right now, but sometimes when it would disconnect, I'd turn it off/on and it wouldn't reconnect. I don't know if it's a sign of the drive possibly failing? Any help would be appreciated.

Good morning, i have a problem with my HDD. I have been looking around google for this problem but i can't find any (i'm sorry if i'm not keen enough to search if this problem have been solved). When i plug my HDD to my laptop it shows up in my computer as local disk F, but when i double click or right click local disk F, it shows not responding message and make my windows explorer restart every time ending the process.

I already checked the problem was RAW thing (maybe), and try some instruction to get my HDD working. But the program required to do that didn't work well.

Example :
I use EaseUS data recovery, but it always stuck at scanning disk. It works fine after i unplugged the external HDD.

I use testdisk.exe, choose create, but it's stuck at please wait screen.

Some program didn't start up or slow start up eventhough clicked it/open it.
(VLC, paint, etc.)

Disk management didn't show anything when i plugged the external HDD.

How can i follow the instruction if i can't pass the loading screen at all?
I really appreciate the help regarding this matter, and sorry for bad english (it's not my native language after all).

Answer:External HDD (WD Passport 500gb) not responding

Hello KuroYuuki!

I'm sorry for the issue you're having. :/

The fact that the system lags and doesn't respond, and even freezes, when the external WD drive is connected means that its corruption is malfunctioning the system, and you may not be able to pass through the loading screens.

I would suggest you change the cable with a new shorter one and try a different port, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and after that another system, just to see if it will load up fully.

How did you determine the drive has went to RAW format if it can't load and show up in Disk Management or it did?

If you are not able to go through the loading screens successfully, and you need your data back, your best option would be to take the drive to a professional Data Recovery Company, WD has partners in the field.

I bought a 500GB Fantom Disk Drive (external) from Comp USA for around 90 bucks a couple of months ago. Since then I've used it an amount and steal all of my friends music whenever I am over at their place with my drive. I had taken it off and let it sit for about two weeks and went to plug it in the other day and it gave me the hardware install wizard and would not show in My Computer or Disk Manager. After more searching around I found out that it actually DID display in disk manager but it displayed in the USB Device section with a yellow "!" Any ideas as to how I can get it working?

Answer:500GB External Fantom NOT RECOGNIZING!

It could either be the hard disk itself or just a driver problem. Try another USB port if you haven't already. If you have then click on the drive in disk management and see what Windows says the problem is.

My Western Digital My Book 500GB ext HD works fine for a short while. I monitor my HD's with Hard Disk Sentinel and as soon as I connect the WD to my computer it says 31 degrees Celsius. But within 10 minutes it is 40 degrees and Windows can't recognize the HD anymore. I let it cool off for a day and I can use it again for max. 10 minutes.
Is there anything I can do about that or is it dying? In the beginning I used it in a warm environment (I live in the Caribbean), but now my room is constantly airconditioned.

Answer:WD 500GB external HD heats up fast

yup, def don't have that problem up here in frozen NH

anyways, 40c isn't really that hot for a hard drive... and as a rule of thumb anywhere under 50c is considered the "safe zone" for most drives. are you connecting the drive via USB port or firewire? sounds like some sort of a driver or software issue other than heat...

Well it all happened last night. I wanted to move my pc and internet connection to the office to keep things organized. When I did my hard drive will not work. When I plug the power cord to the hard drive the blue light quickly flashes then stays off, but the hard drive turns on then stops completely. I have stripped apart the external encloser to find any other discrepencies, but still nothing. I happen to have a magazine "Blac X" So i just attached the hard drive to it and still noting, except the hard drive continues to run instead of shutting off after a few seconds of running.
a quick brief look of what my drive looks like.
A western digital "My Book Essential Edition" 500gb external hard drive.

I have looked on the website and WD has nothing of interest. I have read and search through numerous customer reviews and I have found much related problems from other customers, but they found their solutions.

I have brought the problem to the geek squad at best buy and they have checked my hard drive. They said the hard drive works perfectly on their systems and recommended me to update my drivers for the hard drive.

Well I have no idea where to find the proper drives for this hard drive, I try on WD website and they are just to inconvenient they require registration and the exact date of purchase, but i lost my receipt and installation CDs which the drivers come from.

I try to search for the driver, but only come across programs that update every driv... Read more

tried to use windows backup to an external maxtor one touch (500gb) and windows keeps saying the disk is corrupt or is unreadable and to perform a scan disk operation. So I start it and it never completes and seems to make my machine unstable or a virus on the external drive is getting on my machine and messing things up, like running windows update will say it is installing 14,768 updates.... then it will crash after starting up, Then if you use the machine without fixing it it will fail to turn on the monitor but the hard drive seems to run..... please help

Answer:Win7 says 500GB external USB HDD is corrupted

try the external drive with a new data cable and in a different port.take off the external drive, do a system restore on your system, virus check, spyware check, malwarebytes check, you may download drive tools from maxtor (all free) to check that your drive is good. once you are sure your machine if ok, reattach the defective drive (with all realtime AV, Spy and malware progs running) and then scan that with all the AV, spy and malware checkers.should this not fix your issues it maybe worthwhile to format the drive (if you do not have too much valuable data on it).that should get rid of any virus's you may have picked up.finally if all fails, totally wipe the defective drive, using the tools from maxtor. and save your files and do a factory reset on the main drive.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Hi Techies....

I have only 20 GB Internal HDD in my CPU. So I thought of incresing the storage by adding a new HDD(external) -500GB/1TB

Although I can use it normally as a plug & play USB ,
but as the external HDD would contain important data (which should never get virus infected), I plan to install all antivirus s/w in the portable HDD after installing the OS.

Therefore, I plan to use it as a Bootable HDD as well.

Advantage would be that even if I connect it to someone else's computer, it would boot from my OS (after making changes in BIOS) in the external HDD and before copying the data from any computer , I'll be able to scan it (remove any virus infections if any...)

How to install WinXp SP3 OS in the external HDD & also create partitions in it...allowing me to to use it on any computer , with my antivirus running on it.

My computers' current specifications are:
OS : Winx Xp SP3
internal HDD : 20GB
Ram : 1GB
Processor: 2.6 Ghz ----P4 ---

Answer:how to install Win Xp Professional onto 500GB/1TB External HDD

I have the Western Digital 500GB MyBook Essential edition Hard Drive. The disc worked perfectly until this morning while in use when it started a repeated chucking noise (tsk-tsk, tsk-tsk). Answer:WD MyBook 500GB external HD failure

If you can hear the drive spinning then I'm afraid I believe the drive is toast - a mechanical failure that can only be repaired by specialists in a cleanroom. (the sound you can hear is known as the 'click of death')If the drive is not spinning then a sharp tap may free up the bearings but could also void your warranty - catch22 I'm afraid !
