Sudden loss of all USB ports

Question: Sudden loss of all USB ports

My Widows XP system has lost access to all USB portsI have tried reinstalling drivers but get error signal saying they are missing or corrupted. My USB keyboard works fine on the setup screen but when XP starts nothing . I am having to use Linux OS to type this. Have searched Microsoft for replacement drivers but can't seem to find any. Cant use printer or USB pocket flash drives in XP , but all work fine on Linux so must be an XP fault. Am a bit dubious about using these sites that offer to " update all drivers " for free , anyone had any experience of these ?

Preferred Solution: Sudden loss of all USB ports

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Sudden loss of all USB ports

You should not need to manually update the drivers. Simply uninstall ALL USB Ports, then re-start PC. All Ports should then work as normal.

My Mesh PC has decided not to play DVDs anymore today. The error message suggests a fault on the TV Out of my graphics card is preventing access throught the analogue copyright! Sounds double dutch! The video card is an NVidia Geforce 3 Ti200 which seems perfect otherwise it had the latest driver installed some weeks ago.Don't want to buy a new card if its a software problem but am lost for ideas at present.

Answer:Sudden loss of DVD playback

The fact that you installed the latest nvidia drivers is the clue: recent drivers have caused problems with DVD playback, especially with PowerDVD giving the message the TVOut has been disabled. You will need to go back to your earlier drivers.

Hi, I'm new here but it looks like a very informative and friendly forum... can you help?Last night, whilst playing "Painkiller" (I'm 38, don't start!), I had a sudden loss of power to my desktop; without any warning and no jarring to the case, it suddenly died.Monitor, speakers, external HD all carried on working. When i switch off the power at the wall and switch back on (UK 240V), there is a momentary flicker of life as the case fans (and leds) flare up for a tiny flicker and then die. It will do this once only... subsequent pressing of power button does nothing, HOWEVER if i disconnect power to the wall and reconnect, it will do the same thing.I opened it up and the processor, PSU fans all start momentarily and then die.No other equipment in the house flickered at the time (like lights or TV).Am I right in thinking it's the PSU that has suddenly died? (One thing of interest... a week ago I updated my video driver to ATI Catalyst 7.9; this wouldn't run any of my Half life installation so I removed it and reinstalled version 6.Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.AMD Athlon 2.2, running at 3.21GB RAMRadeon 9600 graphicsOnboard sound.Fancy case.

Hello. I recently upgraded from an old IDE drive to a SATA drive and installed everything fresh including my OS. After I got everything set up and personalized the way I had it I began installing games. The first I tried was Battlefield BC2. Ingame on a full 32 man server I was getting 50+FPS constantly with maxed settings in DX10. I played for a while and figured I had everything worked out with the new SATA so I started mass installing all of my games. After everything was finished, I rebooted, loaded updates, etc and the next day when I went to get on BC2, my framerates were in the toilet. 25-30FPS instead of the 50+ I was accustomed to. I checked the drive and it was 85% fragged for some reason. I defragged and tried again but got no performance increase. It was then I noticed that when the game is running my CPU usage is at 100% the entire time. I did a bit of overclocking (each core over by 200mhz) and noticed a bit of an increase in performance. I have stock cooling however and don't want to keep my CPU overclocked at 100% load with it. My question is, why when I had fresh installed everything and before I loaded all my other games onto the drive was BC2 working perfectly and smooth, but after I installed my other games the performance took a crap? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Server is a PE4400 running NT, we will be migrating to 2003 on a PE2950 in the near future.

Hard drive config is Raid 5, 3 x 16GB hard drives.
Drive c:\ is a 4GB container
Drive d:\ a 25GB container

During Thursday 1GB disappeared from drive c:\, I noticed the amount of space dropping away. We were able to create some space to allow operations but have to constantly monitor this.

Drive c:\ correctly displays a 4GB capacity but reports 3.5GB in use and 500MB free space. There is only 2.3GB in data so there should be at least 1GB free.

Have tried running chkdsk /f after discussing with our support provider but this hasn't resolved the problem.

After running chkdsk /f the following is in the event log under event id 41 and source of afadisk

The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the device \disk0\partition2 with label "Dell Server".

Would chkdsk c: /f /r resolve the problem?

The drive is online so there is nothing physically wrong with the drive at least what I can understand. Is it worth having the drive replaced?

Would be grateful for any guidance that can be provided.

I've recently upgraded my GPU and PSU to a GTX 650TI 2GB Boost Superclocked and Seasonic M12II 620W, and noticed a sudden loss in RAM after installing the new hardware. Originally, my PC had 6.00GB of RAM, but when I check the system information, it says that only 4.00GB of RAM are present. Is it possible that the introduction of these components affected my RAM? I'm completely in the dark with this one, any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Sudden RAM Loss After PSU & GPU Installation

First thought would be to double check that the ram modules haven't been knocked about and are actually seated properly still.

How much RAM does the BIOS show installed?

HiI`ve had a wireless connection with a single laptop working perfectly for over a year. (Sweex ADSL router) The problem now is suddenly I cant view web pages. When the router is switched on I can access the net with excellent signal but only for a few pages. The ISP said it was a networking prob. So I reset the router and created a new wireless connection but the problem persists.I made the new connection with ethernet cable and set WEP security. Any idea what has caused this to happen and what else can I try. It happens when conncted with the ethernet too.I cant stay online long enough to find a solution from searching the forum. Thanks Elle2u

Question: Sudden power loss

Hi

I'm putting together a computer for my dad out of a few parts I no longer need and was creating a new partition on the hard drive in preparation for a format and installation of Windows.

However, whilst the the partition was being created the power died. Now the machine won't switch on. There is a red LED on the motherboard that lights up when the power button is pressed and the processor fan twitches, but doesn't start turning. There's no power to the CD-ROM drive.

I've tried disconnecting all disk drives, removing/switching position of RAM etc, but nothing seems to work.

The case and power supply are new and the machine was working fine for 30/45 minutes prior to this happening.

I'd appreciate any thoughts - I'm afraid it might be a problem with the motherboard, but am not really sure.

Thanks in advance, Jake

Question: Sudden speed loss

Hey there guys.

Basically all of a sudden my computer has started to dramatically slow down randomly.

It seems to be happening when I do something a little heavy like rendering, but generally doesn't go away and I'm forced to turn off my computer. If I try to ctrl-alt-delete to check mem usage I get an error saying it couldn't open. I have used this pc for a long time and it has always worked fine. I re-installed windows hoping this would help but it hasn't, leaving me to think its some kind of hardware error.

Please help

Question: Sudden memory loss

A little bit involved and difficult to explain.! My Outlook program started to act in astrange way. It would come up and within a few seconds left the screen. I checked my C drive and noticed that it showed red and I had about 1.5 GB left The day before I had about 35 GB left. I use a Maxtor Mini as one of 2 back up drives which is set to back up each day. I checked this and that was also in red and near capacity, and I had a message "last backup failed."

I have tried to locate, on my C drive, where this memory consumption occurred by looking for a file that would show around 33GB...no luck.

I am using a Toshiba laptop Vista.

Any ideas?

I checked the device manager and its says hd audio installed and has no unrecognised parts. So I then went to bios and the audio is turned on. I have an X201T, two years old, 8 cell battery. I had definitely noticed a deterioration in battery life, down to about 2.5 hours of active work. But suddenly the battery does not charge at all and I'm notified the battery condition is poor, time to replace. Interestingly, this occurred after the machine spent a couple of weeks unplugged, not used at all. Is this expected? I had assumed a gradual deterioration towards zero, not a sudden absolute death. Could it be a software problem in the power manager, or some such thing? Thanks for any help you can give me. Greg.

Answer:sudden loss of battery?

It's not unusual for one or more cells in a Li-Ion battery to fail after a couple of years. The result is either that the battery is completely dead or suddenly drops a large amount of reported charge, e.g. goes from 80% to 40% in a matter of seconds. This can happen if you let the battery go to 0% for an extended time period.

One thing to try: Go into Power Manager, Battery Information tab and click the "Battery Maintenance" button in order to try to "recondition" the battery. If it doesn't work the first time you may want to try once or twice more. No guarantees that it will work.

Hi. Just found this forum while looking for some assistance for a problem that has literally occured overnight. I inherited this computer from my son after he moved on to a new one.I am not exactly a computer noob but certainly no expert either. I have been using the computer for about 6 months with no problems. I was using it late Saturday night and there was nothing wrong with the sound. I turn it on and fire it up Sunday morning to see the speaker icon on the Taskbar has a little red cross along side it and a box telling me 'No Audio Output Device is Installed.' I found this forum and started looking through it trying everything recommended.I tried System Restore but that made no difference. I tried the Windows Help with the option to automatically fix the problem but it didn't. If I go into Control Panel...Hardware and Sound...Sound...Manage Audio Devices, I get a box with Digital Display Audio,AMD Audio Device, not plugged in.If I right click on this I find 'Show Disabled Devices' and 'Show Disconnected Devices' both ticked. I'm pretty sure I used to see a Realtek icon on the Taskbar but there is'nt one there now although I do have a Realtek folder in my Programs but there is no exe file in there? Anyway I would be grateful for any advice or suggestions you could give me.
Regards and thanks in advance.

I plugged in a new fan to help keep my hdd's cool, and i plugged it into the board (turned off), and when i turned it back on, everything was good, speed fan detected it and it was running smooth. But, i noticed that my hdd light was continually on, but the hdd's weren't reading, so i shut down, and i unplugged the fan, hoping maybe that caused it. When it restarted, suddenly it was in 640x480. So, i checked the display settings, now it suddenly had every resolution up to like 3400x2048, but not my resolution of 1680x1050.

Frustrated, i uninstalled the video card, and reinstalled, same thing. Sooo, i uninstalled the drivers and software, restarted, and reinstalled. SAME THING.
Frustrated, i slammed my fist on the keyboard, and then came here.

The video card is a integraded ATI raedon xpress 200, the motherboard a ECS elitegroup RS482-M754.

Mine doesn't show that one in my driver setup.

It is a normal one though (wide)
I wonder if the drivers you loaded does not have this one either

Go through the video settings and confirm there is no option saying enable wide

Answer:sudden power loss

If you are not working on a document or editing a video or just about anything that you might need to save then having a power cut should not do any damage, you might get a nag screen when you reboot saying windows was not shut down correctly etc but apart from that,It should hopefully not be to much of a problem.
Of course pressing the power button still allows your PC to shut down correctly whereas a power cut does not.

Hi,

I have a Maxtor Fireball 40GB HDD connected via USB to my computer. It was working fine until a couple of days ago and I cannot now access it. I get a message stating that the drive isn't formatted. I've looked at the Disk Management utility within XP and the drive is shown (Only the drive letter), layout = Partition, Type=Basic, File System is blank and it shows as having 100% free space. The drive had a FAT32 File system and I suspect this has been corrupted some how. Is there a way of repairing the FAT without losing the data on the drive, or do I have to re-format?

Thanks,

I have a Lenovo T61, Type 7663 laptop with the 14.1" widescreen LCD and NVidia graphics chip. The laptop has been working flawlessly for the past year, and yesterday, the LCD stopped displaying video. The laptop was in my car (it was about 30 degrees outside) for a few hours. I took it inside, but I didn't turn it on. (It might've been in sleep mode, though). After about 6 hours later, I turned the laptop on and everything was fine, but the battery was dead (5% remaining). Right after logging into Windows, the battery indicator starting flashing orange, and the laptop went into standby. I plugged the AC adapter in, and woke the laptop up. The backlight came on, but no video appeared on the screen. I hard rebooted the laptop, the power indicators glowed properly, but the screen only lit after about 5 seconds. Only the backlight came on, no POST message or boot logo. The system boots fine without the LCD output, and I can even turn on the bluetooth, and change the brightness setting of the LCD. After connecting an external monitor, the picture comes in perfectly clear without any distortion. There was nothing wrong at all before the screen stopped displaying video. I took the laptop apart today, using the HMM, and removed the screen, and unplugged and reconnected both ends of the LCD cable and inverter connections. Still nothing. Only the backlight. are you logged on as admin or a std user? you are going to have to revert the perms back to what they were or add your user name to the group that owns the files.

What I would do is to take ownership of the entire library. instructions are here Take Ownership Shortcut

For a couple of years, I have been using Philips GoGear Vibe MP3 plaers through a Belkin 7 port hub with no problem. A couple of days ago. the player was no longer recognized by the computer, eithe through the hub or connected directly to the computer ( Dell Dimension 8400 4GB memory).

The wireless mouse, which was connected via the hub, froze, and operated once I connected directly to the computer. Hard drives connected to the hub worked, but flash drives no longer did.

I changed hubs, changed cables, re-installed chipsets, etc., etc., but everytime I connected the Philips player, it, in fact, destroyed the hub's ability to handle all connections.I also tried a new Philips with updated firmware, and that did not work.

Philips' tech support has no idea what is wrong. Since I just installed another Belkins 7 port hub ( I also had the same problem with others manufacturers' products), everything works as it should, except that I stay away from connecting the MP3 player to the computer, either through the hub, a cable to the hub, or directly to the computer. To download data, I save to a flash drive, then use my notebook (W7 OS) as a transfer conduit from flash drive to MP3.

So, if anyone has an idea of what could be , or is, the problem, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

Answer:A sudden recognition loss by XP SP3

Does the Hub have a power adapter? Is it the correct one? Be sure to use the power adapter on the hub. Be sure you are plugging the hubs power adapter directly into the wall and not through a Surge Protector or extension cord. Are you plugging the source USB cable (from the Hub) into the Back USB port of the computer and not the front? The back USB ports are stronger. Devices that are not being recognized or crashing while using a hub are caused by not enough power. Try the above and also try a different USB data cable from hub to the computer. Try a different port on the computer. Low powered USB devices like keyboards and mice can go in the front because they don't require as much power.
If all of that fails, then With the hub installed, go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager, do you see any devices with yellow marks? or under USB, do you see an Unknown Device? if so, right click it and uninstall it. Unplug the Hub and restart the computer then after it loads, plug the USB source cable back into a different USB port on the computer.
What is the make and model of your computer? If it is a name brand computer (HP, Dell etc) Go to the manufacturers support/download drivers site type in your make and model and download the Chipset driver for your model.

Occasionally, I will lose both my internet connection and my sound. I can usually just disconnect the internet and reconnect and it's find, but to get back the sound, I have to reboot. This seems to happen more when I'm playing CDs, but perhaps that's when the loss of sound is most obvious. It definitely happens at other times too.

I have XP and a DSL connection.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Two days ago I lost internet connectivity suddenly on my desktop (Dell XPS 630i, onboard Nvidia network controller, running windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) and have been unable to restore it. As my laptop (winXP sp3) can still connect to the internet and the router settings have not been changed (Dlink DGL4500), I'm making the assuption that my networking problem resides on my desktop alone. the network adapter gives me a 'limited connectivity' symbol and refuses to connect to my network, even though the router acknowledges the desktop's wired connection. The troubleshooting diagnostic sometimes finds nothing, sometimes finds that the computer is not obtaining a proper IP, and sometimes claims the problem is the router. I've also disabled windows firewall. Throughout this whole process I have been getting a 'Drive Power State Failure' BSOD during restarts (about once every four or five restarts, not consistently). At first I was unable to replace the drivers or uninstall the adapter through device manager. After reinstalling the drivers using the Nforce 650SLI drivers on their website, I was able to do this, but this did not solve the problem. I also did a windows restore to before the problem occured, also with no luck. I've been through the event log and there are numerous code 5007 errors, which just tell me that the adapter timed out during an operation. My Laptop did a scary thing I was using my laptop unplugged to watch some videos before bed and while I was browsing between videos, my laptop shut off suddenly as if the battery had been popped out. It wasn't the normal, gentle low-battery shutdown that happens around 10% where it looks like the computer goes into hibernation and saves your current session, it was a harsh and sudden loss of power. I plugged it in thinking the battery was broken or something and turned the computer back on. When I did so, the "unexpected shutdown" screen showed up, as expected, and everything started normally. When I checked the battery icon, it said It was charging from 1%! What happened? How did my battery drain so completely and so quickly that it by-passed it's normal low-battery shutdown? I continued to let it charge as I ran scans for malware and such to be safe. While doing this, I checked on the battery and it said "62% plugged in, NOT charging" My first thought was "__________ I pushed the battery out of my mind for a few minutes to avoid an oncoming headache but when I noticed the icon fill up a little more, I checked it again and it said: "70% plugged in, charging" and after 5-minutes: "71% plugged in, NOT charging" and after 10 minutes: "74% plugged in, charging" Gently wiggling my power cord by the jack does not affect the charging/not charging status like other power-jack related problems I've experienced... My daughter's Windows 7 laptop just started having problems this week with youtube.

The "spotlight" or "suggestion" videos on the right of the page show up just as white rectangles (that is there is no image in the thumbnail).

Even when logged in, she can't comment on a video or "like" it.

Here are several things that it's not:javascript (it's enabled)
flash player (I uninstalled, then reinstalled it from scratch)
cookies (I cleared the youtube cookies)
cache (I cleared the browser cache)
browser (same problem happens in latest version of firefox, ie, chrome)
user account (problem replicates whether from my admin account, or her non-admin account, on the machine)

So what's going on? I can usually troubleshoot this stuff great, and this one has me stumped.

Answer:Sudden loss of functionality with youtube

Maybe the following will be helpful.

If you right-click on the "spotlight" or "suggestion" thumbnails in youtube when it's working, you can view the associated image, which will be something like http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/lJnEp7u19oM/default.jpg (standard thumbnail for a video).

However, if you do the same thing on my daughter's computer, the associated image is always http://s.ytimg.com/yt/img/pixel-vfl3z5WfW.gif regardless of the video. This is a 1x1 pixel blank or white image.

If I google that http://s.ytimg.com/yt/img/pixel-vfl3z5WfW.gif url, I get suggestions of malware at work. Troubling. Remember, this behavior is the same on the computer regardless of the account used to log into Windows, or regardless of the browser being used, or whether logged into youtube or not.

Another concerning thing - see http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-re...urned-off.html - is that the computer's system restore got mysteriously turned off, which is another SOP for malware.

However, I did scans of the computer in safe mode using AVG and SuperAntiSpyware, and it came up clean, and the daily AVG scans come up clean as well.

Help !!!

Situation so far:-

HP laptop with in-built WiFi adaptor running Vista SP1, connecting by wireless to D-Link router on home network. All working OK until today. Used laptop this morning OK, then shut down. When switched on this afternoon, no longer able to make wif-fi connection.

Checked that all IP settings correct. WiFi software seems to see other networks in my areas - and even connected briefly to one! - so physical adaptor probably OK. Router reports no obvious problem and I can link to it OK with another old XP SP3 laptop, so probably a problem specific to the Vista machine. Windows reports 'timeout error' whenever I try to connect to my own network. I have deleted existing network entry, re-booted and re-submitted several times with no luck. It appears to be some problem about the security keys - see the event log extract at the end of this message.

One possible clue......when I shut down the laptop this AM it ran some Windows updates. Might this have a connection ? (excuse the pun!) I tried to roll them back later on, but System restore failed

After running a clean-up utility on my older computer (700mhz Celeron) I rebooted and when Windows opened I had absolutely no use of my keyboard and mouse. The mouse is a Microsoft Optical and the keyboard is a Compaq. The mouse connects to the keyboard through a USB port, then the keyboard to the tower through another USB. I have tried connecting through one of the other USB ports, rebooting several times, and have even tried using a serial port adapter with no results. It simply will not recognize any USB hardware. The computer reboots normally but without any input device I can't start up in Safe Mode or even reformat the hard drive, for that matter.
Can anyone suggest a fix for this problem?

Which version of Windows?
You may have lost the USB driver. Check Device Manager.

Answer:Sudden, mysterious loss of audio

Is the hardware showing up in device manager? Also, when you mentioned the "No audio devices" message, was that on the audio tab? But back to device manager. . . if neither audio device shows up there, I would start by removing the sb card, then installing it in a different slot. For the onboard, did you check in the bios to see if it is even enabled? The onboard sound is usually disabled in the bios when a separate sound card is installed.

I have a dual boot XP + Ubuntu system, which has been running fine for a few months now, but I have suddenly found myself unable to connect to the internet with my computer running Windows. This occurred around two weeks ago and I have been getting by through just using Ubuntu, but now I'm trying to fix the problem I'm having no luck.
Basically no applications can connect to the internet. Firefox and IE cannot load webpages, no auto up-daters are working and no games will connect. However I can negotiate a LAN with my router (it seems).

Obviously no hardware is at fault as I can access the internet through Linux, and I have tried the computer on two separate connections: mine and my parents.
At first I tried using the repair network connection option in network connections, however this could not clear the ARP cache, which I had to do manually. Now it claims it can fully repair the connection but I am still not able to access the internet.
I have reset the TCP/IP stack and WINSOCK entries to default, but to no avail. There are no faults reported in device manager, and I've done nothing to my network adapter at all.

Ok here's my setup XBox 360 with a VGA cable connecting to my monitor an adapter from the 2 RCA plugs to a 3.5mm plug that goes into my SoundBlaster Audigy sound card's line in jack. My Creative 5.1 surround sound system is connected to the other jacks on the sound card. Now since I set this up it had worked all great. Today i turn on the Xbox and there's no sound. My PC's sound is still working so its not the speakers or the sound card and i checked the connections. It was just working yesterday and I have no idea why its not working anymore.
Any insight?

EDIT: Took the sound plug out of the sound card and plugged it into the jack on the monitor (it has built in speakers) and i'm gettin sound still would rather have them going through my 5.1 system.

Hi there,

Just recently I've noticed that after a few minutes of being connected on the Internet, the connection completely drops out and I cannot obviously connect to anything Internet-related, including via Xbox Live on my Xbox 360. It has only happened over the past 2 nights or so and happens with both my Wired and Wireless connections to my BT Voyager 2100 Router as far as I can tell.

The computer is connected via two options - Wireless or Wired, with the Xbox 360 connected via a wire, both using a standard Ethernet cable. I am unsure if this is related, but it seems that the computer is dropping out the connection before the Xbox 360 does, but maybe this is just to do with the programming differences of the two machines.

I have yet to try changing the filters which go into the wall (and yes, all phone points have these connected), although I don't feel that this is necessary since I am still able to connect to the Internet for a short period of time.

One main oddity is that after rebooting the computer - this being the only way to re-establish the connection to the Internet - the Xbox 360's connection then also resumes and then cuts out once more after the computer.

I have tried connecting the computer to the router both Wirelessly and Wired on the computer and both seem to be working fine. I have had no problems in the past with connections or speeds over the last 2 years of being with BT Yahoo! Broadband.

One final point is that the connection see... Read more

hello!
I have a laptop that I mostly use at work, but bring home on the weekends and use the internet connection.
Well I was on the internet just fine last night at my home, but I came to work this morning and it says that it can not find the internet connection. At first when I checked the connection through "net work connections" it said "No Local Area Caonnection".
So, I restarted the computer and then it says that it can't find any wireless connections. When I tryed to find the wireless connection it said "Windows Can't configure Wireless Connection". So I don't really know where to go from here. Can anyone please tell me what to do?
Thanks!

Hi, For the past year or so I've been using a telstra broadband manager USB to connect to the internet, now all of a sudden I am getting no internet access, not just from the broadband manager but from other networks aswell. I have tried my phones hotspot, other USB's and WiFi's to none of them working.

It would start up and work for about 15 seconds, and then internet access would just cut out completely. I have AVG Internet Security 2012 installed and I have tried disabling the firewall (Windows firewall also) and yet it still doesn't work.

I would start by uninstalling AVG, run the AVG Remover, and ...

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista and 7 and 8.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. [For Windows 8: <Windows Logo> + x - Command Prompt(Admin)]

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Hi everyone,I did a normal Chkdsk using XP's Error checking tool on one of my partitions, and after the scan, I suddenly lost all of the free disk space on that partition. I had 10 gig worth of free space before the Chkdsk and after that, only 4 Mb. During the scan, it said 'insufficient disk space to place bad clusters'.I did the same on my other partition, which had about 45 gig worth of free space, and the same thing happened to that one, after the scan I only had about 2 gig left. And I got the same msg while doing the scan as well. Can someone tell me what happened and how can I fix the problem? Many thanks.

Answer:Sudden loss of Disk Space

You need to have 15% free disk space on the C drive if you expect Windows to function properly. Delete some stuff, run CCleaner and then try again. What are you using for virus and spyware protection? Run your scans in safe mode with system restore turned off. Then run the free scan at www.trendmicro.comThen post back.If the computer is not clean then all bets are off. What prompted the chkdsk in the first place? WHat preceeded all of this?

I've got no idea what to think of it, why it happened and because of what. I have 2 displays, had them for 2 years now and Nvidia GTX 9700. One of them is connected to my graphic card via HDMI and the other one is plugged via DP. A few minutes ago, while I was talking to my friend on Facebook, suddenly my screens went blank and after a second both of my screens were linked via Nvidia Surround - thought that it's strange as I didn't ask for it and didn't give this command. But ok, went to Nvidia control panel and unchecked option "span displays with surround". Applied and from this moment my 2 screens stopped working. The one connected via HDMI. First of all - whaaaaaaaaaaat????
What's going on in a first place that system changes display properties without any action on my part. And second - why now my second display stopped working?
I know that it's not the cable cause when I unplug HDMI, then the 2 monitor starts working. In Nvidia Control Panel I can change settings in only one monitor(one connected via HDMI), in Windows settings I do see 2 displays but the one that was working just a minute ago, is greyed out and I can only change settings of one. What's going on here?

Edit: Forgot to mention. Did system restart, it didn't help. In device manager I can see 2 monitors, there is nothing wrong with them.

Hi, I recently bought a U410 which was working fine apart from a random loss of power. The machine would switch off suddenly in a number of situations (both when being used fairly heavily and when idle) and both under battery and mains power. When it switched off the machine was not excessively hot. When turning it back on the machine booted fine, had adequate battery power and did not report anything in the event logs other than an unexpected shutdown. As the machine was only a couple of weeks old, I returned it to the store and (with a bit of convincing) managed to get a refund. Since this appears to be a fairly isolated issue I bought a new U410 but unfortunately within a couple of days this one was also experiencing the same issue. I would rather fix the issue than take this one back since the U410 is otherwise a very nice machine. After a bit of research on these support boards I found a few threads referring to different potential causes, but no definitive cause. Everything tried so far (fully updating drivers, bios, windows etc) hasn't alleviated this issue. Did any definitive cause of this issue ever get found?

Answer:U410 sudden loss of power

hi stevejefferies,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Most intermittent shut down / power loss issues that I've encounted is due to overheating or a faulty component inside of the PC.

Here's what I would do if I was in your case:
1. Monitor the temperature of the HDD,CPU,GPU by using HWMonitor.(the Core i-series CPU has a TJ max of 100 C before the unit shuts down)
2. If there's no sign of overheating, eliminate the OS and the preloaded apps as the issue by doing a fresh OS install. If you're running Windows 7, you can get a Windows 7 ISO on this website then install all the drivers (keep windows update disabled for the meantime) and observe.

If the issue reoccurs, I recommend you contact lenovo to report the issue and have it serviced.

Regards,
neokenchi

Hi,
I've got a really weird one here. Yesterday, my sound went away. I've got no sound at all, speakers or ear buds. I do not have the sound muted; in fact, the mute function does not seem to be working. I can not access the "international No/red slash" symbol that typically shows sound is muted - I've tried all the usual methods (the keyboard button, in the system tray or after opening the speaker volume or mixer.) Using those methods, I can make it show that I am changing volume, but no sound plays. I'm not talking no sound from YouTube, or any other online source - I've got no Windows sounds, no beeps, burps, cheeps, nothing.

My machine is not connected to any other devices. The system tray says I've got sound. From Device Manager, Sound, video, and game controllers, IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Properties says "this device is working properly." Audio inputs and outputs, Speakers/HP (IDT High Def Audio CODEC) also shows "this device is working properly."

If I go into Sound from Control Panel, the only thing showing (and defaulted) is that same IDT HDA CODEC. If I select that, and go into Configure/Speaker Setup, then Test, I get a message: Device in Use "The device is being used by another application. Please close any devices that are playing audio to this device and then try again." I get this message even if I have just restarted and gone straight to Control Panel. I've gone to Task Manager and shut down any IDT instances shown as runn... Read more

Hi, please go to Windows Services and see both these startup items are running by default : Audio Service and Windows Audio or see here for a more complete information. The startup type for both services should be Automatic. To change the default is by double clicking and then look for startup type - click to drop down menu for choices then hit Appy, Ok.
Just to make sure also, go back to device manager and expand System devices and look for High Definition Audio Controller or any Sound Controller and make sure there is no flag/arrows just below the computer icon. If there is a flag present on any audio related component, right-click then choose enable.

unable to dial out with modem. I have 56k dialup. have deleted and reinstalled my Isp program. In Control panel, it says this modem is working properly, but in the hardware section, only the printer port is listed in the port section, I know that it should also list the communication port (COM 3). This seems to me to be the root of the problem. The isp installation program searches endlessly for my connection when I try to set it up. My phone line seems fine and works fine for a regular phone. Any suggestions for re-establishing the modem. Computer is a compaq desktop running xp home. There has never been a problem in the past. Browser is ie7 and firefox according to circumstances. So I'm having a very annoying issue. At around 11pm last night, my PC completely lost access to the internet. It is definitely not my connection, as the two other PCs in my house which are connected through the same router as mine still have access to the internet. However, if I use system restore and restore my PC to July 12 (about 3 days ago), my internet connection works fine. However, if I wait another 6 hours or so the same thing will happen and I have no idea what's causing it.

I'm running Windows XP SP3. The only software that I've installed in the past week or so is Belarc Advisor (which I recently uninstalled) and the Heroes of Newerth Beta client (it's a game). Other than that I have no knowledge of anything else installed on my PC.

I have attempted some fixes with no avail. I've reinstalled my ethernet drivers. I've done a complete scan of my computer using ESET Smart Security 4. I uninstalled both of those applications that I previously mentioned. Unfortunately none of it has worked and I have a feeling that my internet access will cut out again at any moment in which I will be forced to use system restore again. And no, I don't have any ZoneAlarm products installed. Could that windows update possibly have affected other software?

Oh and one more thing! I have also used system restore to an earlier restore point (I think it was July 9th or 10th) and my internet access did not work. I have tried any restore points earlier ... Read more

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Documents and Settings\kevin Edwards\Local Settings|Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help."

Couldn't find the .pst file (hidden, in fact there was no Local Settings folder) so checked 'hidden' box in next higher folder properties. As I was short of time decided to cancel and resolve later.

Two days later I started computer and got error message:
"Unable to create C:\Documents and Settings\kevin Edwards\Local Settings\Application Data\BVRP Software\Net Waiting\MoHlog.txt file".

Clicked on OK button.

First thing I noticed was a lot of the icons on the desktop were missing. Trying to open Outlook gave the following response:

"An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may be open in another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then click Properties to check... Read more

We have a strange virus/malware on my better half's Vista PC. It has deleted all her emails and email folders. Windows Mail now looks like a brand new App!! I cannot find the emails in the regular data place either. The BT helpline chappie said it must be a virus and that I need to get a technical person in to backup her files and so on and then re-format and re-install windows Vista.I have backed up everything onto an external HD using the Vista backup system. How can I be sure that I haven't backed up the virus as well? I havescanned with a couple of AV programs and they say it is now clear.I do not think I need an outside techie fellow to do this, but I would appreciate any warnings and suggestions..

Answer:Sudden loss of all emails in Vista

Assuming you have done a full search for .eml files and have done full scans with programs like Malwarebytes , Superantispyware , PREVX free etc. , I would suggest trying a file recovery program such as Recuva or suchlike as your missing files may just be hidden ( flagged for overwriting } rather completely gone . Greetings,

All of the sudden about two weeks ago my laptop computer's performance dropped dramatically with no apparent explanation. I'm an avid gamer so I immediately noticed massive frame losses across every title I have. I've retraced my steps and just cannot figure this one out. If this is perhaps a clue, I've noticed in some game's net-graphs, some frame drops are coincided with severe packetloss/traumatic internet activity. It's an alienware laptop with top of the line parts and prior to these issues I had great performance with the current configuration of running programs/processes. I have completed all of the steps prior to posting this log also. Thanks in advance for your time.

I am now concerned about the quality of the W510 I recently purchased after reading the numerous threads concerning the sudden and unanticipated power-off events that have occurred. My W510 only halts when running on battery power. The behavior is consistent with a hardware fault of some kind. The events produce no warnings nor logs. Once the laptop halts it will not switch back on until the battery is removed, AC power added, power button pressed. Then shut down to re-insert the battery. FUN!!!!So besides a bios update to speed up the fan on battery..... What is the advice anyone can offer concerning getting this taken care of in a reasonable manner? Thanks,Below is my setup:<hostname> description: Notebook product: 4318CTO vendor: LENOVO version: ThinkPad W510 width: 64 bits capabilities: smbios-2.6 dmi-2.6 vsyscall64 vsyscall32 configuration: administrator_password=disabled boot=normal chassis=notebookfrontpanel_password=unknown keyboard_password=disabled power-on_password=disabled uuid=<long stringhere> *-core description: Motherboard product: 4318CTO vendor: LENOVO physi... On 2 occasions recently my A30 has suddenly just cut out dead, almost like a power cut (although it wasn't!). If I tried to re-boot straight away it would only get to the login screen and then completely cut out again. If I then leave it for an hour-or-two (to cool down?) it boots up OK. Curiously, you do NOT get the usual 'windows was not closed down properly, now checking disk for errors' message i.e. it just booted up normally, however the 2 Word documents I was working on were recovered OK.

My feeling is that it may be a hardware fault, possibly relating to temperature? Anyone out there got any ideas? Thanks in anticipation....

Answer:Satellite A30 - sudden power loss

Hi

It could be an overheating issue. If the temperature goes to the critical limit so the OS shuts down the unit. This is an overheating protection of the Toshiba notebooks.
Well, the overheating issue is a very serious problem. I would recommend to check the cooling ventilators for a dust. Try to clean this with the vacuum cleaner.
If the problem remains so you should contact the service partner.

Up unti yesterday I was able to burn my dvd video files using either Nero or ones, however I am suddenly getting unexpected crashes on nero and ones will now not locate any drives. I thought I would see if i could find a work round and downloaded a 15 trial of blaze media, that however fails with a runtime error.

I am still able to burn data disks with WMP but this does not offer DVD video burning

I am using Vista 64, I have tried a system restore back to several point prior to the first occurrence as well as a re-install of Nero and ones. I have un-installed and re-installed both my burners.

I am at my wits end, if anyone can suggest anything I would be most grateful

I should also note that I am getting start-up errors on my bluesoliel tray icon and that daemon tools no longer runs

Answer:sudden loss of dvd recording ability

Can you write any files to your dvd drive? As a test to see that your DVD drive is working properly, copy and paste a small file or folder to the dvd drive. Use a dvd-rw so as not to waste a whole dvd.

Also try Windows DVD Maker. It is already preinstalled with Vista and is very simple to use.

Good day,

Everything on my computer was fine this morning when I left for week, but upon my return I noticed that my keyboard/mouse wasn't working. I restarted my computer and confirmed that my keyboard works in the bios and whatnot, but when I get to the windows login screen, I get no response from the keyboard or mouse.

The mouse is a simple USB one, and I'm using a PS/2 keyboard, so I doubt it's some sort of sudden driver issue.
I tried logging into safemode, and I get the same result, can't move my mouse or use my keyboard.

Does anyone have any idea how to possibly fix this issue? I'm unable to restore from an earlier state either.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Sudden loss of keyboard/mouse input

Do you have a Windows Disk? If so you can boot to that and choose the repair option instead of the install.
If you don't have a Windows disk, can try another mouse and keyboard. If another mouse and keyboard work then the keyboard and mouse drivers can be removed and windows will automatically reinstall them on boot.

Answer:cd rom sudden loss of read and write ability

But before you bin it, perhaps just try swopping data cables between your two devices.Honestly, this is just how they die, without either warning or whimper. Another check (which may be physically difficult)- If you can hear the drive spin up slightly and then just as quickly die away instead of really getting going, that too is a bad sign. This is easier to see than hear but that means removing from its surround and taking a cover off.If it is still under warranty return it but otherwise reconcile yourself to replacing it.

I am running a PC clone, Win XP SP3. It is using a wired connection to a router. Yesterday, out of no where, I lost connection to the internet. No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.

Since then, I've found that if I reboot my computer, or when coming from a cold boot, I will have internet access for a few minutes. Not even long enough to download a 185MB file or fully check my email.

Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem.

Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?

Hi all,

I've got a strange hard drive problem that has me stumped. Basically, I opened my case to temporarily hook up an IDE hard drive to transfer some files, and when I booted up, my main hard drive (a 250 GB Hitachi) was not being recognized. It didn't show up in the BIOS or in Vista under My Computer. I didn't touch the Hitachi drive when hooking up the temp drive, so this was odd.

I should mention that the drive is IDE and I am using a SATA>IDE adapter (my motherboard is SATA only). I tried troubleshooting by disconnecting all of the SATA drives except for the Hitachi, and attempting to boot. I tried connecting it to each of the SATA ports systematically, but it did not show up in the BIOS on any of them.

Then I connected my HD with Vista 32 installed in order to see if Vista recognized it. The Hitachi did not show up under My Computer, but I could see it in the Disk Management screen. It showed the file system as RAW, with all of the space unallocated. It was my main drive with Vista 64 installed and was over 3/4ths full, so this was surprising.

I tried TestDisk, and got a strange result. As you can see from the screen cap below, the size of the drive listed is ridiculously too large (it's only 250 GBs, but TeskDisk shows over a terrabyte).

When I select Analyse using TestDisk, I get "No partition is bootable", then when I do a Quick Search, it scans the drive for about 90 minutes and eventually tells me "Structure ok"... Read more

Answer:sudden hard drive partition loss

I don't have any boards that are SATA-only, nor do I use Vista, but I HAVE lost partitions before.
I'm one that usually stays with what works, so what I would do is boot to a DOS floppy, and run a DOS version of FDISK, and delete all partitions (may show up as "NON-DOS" partition).
Rebooting, I would then run a DOS implementation of PartitionMagic 7 or later. When loaded, it has an "Undelete Partition" option when the unpartitioned space is selected. Give it about 3-4 minutes, and bingo, my partition is recovered.
Dunno if you have access to a DOS floppy or an old copy of PartitionMagic, but that's what I'd do - and I've never lost a partition doing that. Regardless of the size. (And yes, version 7 or later handles NTFS just fine.)

That's just what I do, perhaps others have a better idea.

Hi please bare with me as I am not the most technical sounding but I try to be thorough. I am not exactly a noob with computers neither. I have an issue where I will be on the computer and then suddenly the computer loses all power and reboots. The only indication I have that something is happening at first is that I hear all my fans in the case stop (just silence) and then the computer is off. Then my computer restarts and states that it did not shut down correctly the last time and asks how I would like to start back into Windows (Safemode or not).

The only thing I can think of is the latest change to my computer which was a month ago now. My friend Dave talked me into putting in a different Motherboard for minor improvement since he got it for free and wanted to gift it to me.

I went from a Asus M3A78 Pro ATX 780G Motherboard (Chipset : AMD 780)
to a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz.

No BSOD recorded in the last month or so.

Occurrence of the "power outage" was just yesterday.

Suddenly my bluetooth stopped working. I had headphones going, watching a movie and then nothing. When I went to troubleshoot, I found no radio toogle to turn bluetooth on or off in bluetooth settings. This was after I got the message that I needed to turn bluetooth on this Windows device. I have uninstalled and reinstalled bluetooth driver from Acer after no bluetooth was showing up in Device Manager. This is even when viewing hidden services. I am attaching all the screen shots I have. Right now all that I have connected is my wireless keyboard. Searching for devices does not pick up anything, just gives me the error message that I need to turn on bluetooth.

So let me explain my lengthy issue..

Two days ago my router suddenly stopped functioning, I had full connectivity to it BUT could not load a single page. I live in an apartment complex and plug my router directly into the wall so I do NOT have access to the modem at all. We all use Macbook Pros, and I have some common knowledge about routers, very basic. I also live with two other roommates and we all had a sudden drop of internet. I would rather not buy a new router, nor would I like to pay the 40$ for help from Linksys because I have owned this router for a few days over a year.

My immediate thought was do a system reset, so we shut off our computers and did a router reset. Checked again to no avail. I will begin to list all of the things we tried:

1. Multiple router and computer resets, we ran a direct cable from the wall socket to our computers and the internet worked fine.

2. We ran an extra cable from a router port to our computer and ended up with no success.

3. At this point we did a factory reset, at first we used the official linksys CD and set it up. Got it up and running, but still, no internet.

4. We began to do multiple factory resets and after the second factory reset we could no longer use the CD to recognize it. It could not 'find the router.'

Now begins day 2. (we gave up after 6 hours of resetting and looking for solutions)

1. I wake up at 6am upset that I have no internet, so I begin to check it out again. Immediately, it does not work of... Read more

I have a T61 with a 42T4530 7.8Ah Battery. A few days ago I was using this on battery power (for about three hours) and the battery had gone down to about 15% indicated charge remaining. When I next switched the PC on I plugged in the mains adaptor - at this point the battery indicator started flashing orange. When I removed the mains adaptor there was no power. I tried an overnight charge but the light was still flashing. It seems as if the laptop is rejecting the battery. It seems unusual for a battery to have absolutely no charge and seems as if it is being rejected. The laptop/battery are around 14 months old and the battery is a original /genuine part. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks,Cliff

I have just read through a thread dated 15.02.09 about a sudden loss of WiFi connectivity. It is similar to what I am attempting to resolve. It seems that after the Microsoft up-dates on 15th or 16th Feb the WiFi connectivity was affected. I am running a Netgear router on an XP machine with a remote Vista machine. The remote Vista machine can access the internet. The XP machine can access the internet. The LAN is connected and both machines appear on the network but access to the either machine is denied. Any suggestions to help resove this situation or interrogate the system?

Looking forward to speaking to someone soon.

I'll try and make this as succinct as possible since I'm not a tech and you are!

Everything was fine and dandy for months, until one fateful day when all of a sudden I started receiving error messages telling me that I had no server connection.

1. We run 3 PCs on a home network using a router

2. Both of the other 2 PCs are still operating properly and have all capabilities and connections.

3. I am running a bootleg version of Win 2000 Pro (remember, it's been working fine for over a year)

4. I recently installed something called SPYKILLER which is supposed to detect viruses and popups and kill those varmits dead on command.

5. I was using the dread IE through SBCYahoo (my provider) as browser, until the day my stepson, Linuxboy turned me on to Foxfire Mozilla, which he installed, and I thought was faster and better and best of all not a MS product.

6. Life was fine for 24 hours until I set my SPYKILLER on to scan all drives while I stepped out for Vietnamese food, and

7. Two hours later, I returned to the blue screen of death, and life was never the same again.

8. Upon rebooting, I received such delightful messages as:

The instruction at 0x77f8910e referenced memory at

OK here is my problem. I am running Windows XP Pro and also have Office Pro installed. I have 2 poker gaming sites that I play on, Full Tilt Poker and Ultimate Bet, suddenly not allow connection. I have been playing on both of these sites for a number of months now and I have at least determined that it is not an accouint problem. I can still access them from my home computer.

Hello:

I have a Dell Lattitude D800 Laptop with Intel 1400 mhz processor, 512MB of RAM, 27.8 GB of memory. I run Windows XP Professional, Version 2002.

A few nights ago, I left my computer on overnight and lost around 1GB of memory without any explanation. I do not have any peer-to-peer programs or download programs installed except for a bittorrent client, which I use to download video files and which was not turned on. One night later, I inexplicably lost ANOTHER 300MB of memory without downloading anything (except for automatic updates to my anti-virus and Windows Update) or making any considerable changes to my computer. The only weird thing I've noticed is Windows Update seemingly downloading more than usual.

I constantly run Windows Firewall coupled with AVG FREE and AVG Anti-Spyware. Full scans of both AVG programs have come up with nothing. I also run CrapCleaner v 1.36.430 on a daily basis.

So, my questions are:

1. Are there any programs that would display the record of changes to my hard drive's memory over the past week so that I can see specifically where this 1.3 GB of random disappeared memory went?

2. What precautions should I take? What can I do that would make identifying the possible problem easier?

3. What problems could I be possibly dealing with?

Thanks,
Sam

I use Outlook 2007 as email client with W7. My "Outlook" folder is on my Data partition, and I make frequent mirror image copies of all my data partition to another drive.
Today, as far as I know without me doing anything, when I tried to use my address book to add a person to the "To" box, my address book was empty!. It took a bit if fiddling but I found in the left column under "contacts" there was an archive contact folder that I was able to copy to the normal contact folder, so I think all is well. However it is a mystery how it happened _ could it be my Malawarebytes pro, or Avast? Also , although I do back up the Outlook folder I really have no idea how to use the back up if needed! Question: Loss of USB ports

. I have a dell machine with windows vista. Connected to the usb ports are mouse, keyboard and my wireless netgear usb model wpn111. Nearly every day I notice that I lose my wireless lan connection and this is when I notice ports failure. The led on the wireless key stops flashing and reconnecting it does not bring it back to life. The mouse and keyboard continue working, however if I disconnect and reconnect the mouse or keyboard these also stop working and are not recognised. The only way to restore usb ports is by shutting down pc. At shut down there is a problem, the shutting down windows screen hangs and I end up physically switching off the pc. Spoke to Dell they suggested downloading chipset software but this has not helped.

Answer:Loss of USB ports

this sounds like a software or bios issue, although you cannot rule out hardware failure. I suggest reinstalling all the appropriate drivers with updates. If that fails, you will need to get the hardware tested and/or replaced.

Hello I've had this problem for a little under two weeks now.. not sure what I was doing at the time. Anyway the problem consists of simply from time to time with no real pattern my wireless internet will just stop working and I will be disconnected. Trying to right click the icon on the bottom right results in nothing and when I go to restart or turn off my computer I get either a 'Connection Trays is not responding' or 'Explorer.exe is not responding'. Sometimes this will happen within minutes of starting up my laptop and sometimes it won't for a good few hours.

I ran all of the programs in the windows XP cleaning procedure.. however when I tried to run combofix it crashed on me and I wasn't sure what to do so I skipped it.

My computer specs are as follows if they are important:
Lenovo T61p
Windows XP SP2
3Gb RAM
7200 RPM 100gig HD
2.19GHz
Nvidia Quadro FX 570m
Wireless card is Intel Pro wireless 3945ABG network adapter

Come to think of it, I have been having issues ever since I got my laptop regarding the wireless connection.. I believe that in the past sometimes the internet would just cut out and I would have to restart. However back then a simple restart solved the problem.. but now it keeps occurring.

Thank you for your time!

Welcome to Major Geeks!

It does not sound like your problems are related to malware. You could be having some kind of hardware issue and may want to post in the Hardware Forum. Yes there was some malware removed by the cleaning procedure and I have a little more minor steps for you to do, but I don't think anything that was removed was related to your problem.

Have you run the hard drive manufacturer's disk utility to see if the drive is actually defective?

You could also run checkdisk--that might take several hours.

Have you run Windows 7 disk cleanup?

How much space do you have allotted to System Restore?

Have you been doing a lot of installing and uninstalling?

Have you done a complete virus/malware scan?
Can you post a picture of your Disk Management, showing partitions and sizes?

We have had three desktops and one laptop sharing Internet and documents wirelessly for about two years. In November of 2006, the base desktop (Sony) started making a horrid, loud noise…maybe the fan? In any case, we turned it off and stopped using it. Since this was the PC that held the base wireless card, we thought we’d have to replace it in order to continue getting connected through the wireless network, but we continued to have Internet connection on all computers through our network (not a neighbor's)...even though the base PC was always off. I am evidently clueless about how wireless networking operates!

Anyway, the network and Internet connections have worked flawlessly since then (about 7 months) for all three of our working computers in the home…until about a week ago when we woke up with none of our computers able to connect to the Internet thru the network. We all still had wireless network capabilities but no Internet. I ruled out that the problem was the service provider because we can get Internet service when I hook the laptop directly to the cable. I can also get the old, loud, base PC to connect to the Internet when I directly connect using the cable, but after days of trying various combinations and settings, recycling, trying different channels, I still could not get anything to connect via the wireless network.

It may be worth noting that sometime within the last week, it appears that our cable switched over from Adel... Read more

Hi. My Lenovo laptop is having power problems at the moment that I do not know how to solve. Background: I have had my Lenovo laptop for 2 years. My battery stopped working some months back now. The battery no longer charges, and the computer dies if the AC power cable is removed. It appears that the laptop is no longer able to charge / discharge from the battery. I have periodically checked the battery's power status and it has steadily gone down, untill recently it hit 0%. The Problem: I have been able to use my laptop over the last few months simply using the AC power lead. Everything was working fine (except of course if the power lead came unplugged and the laptop died), untill a month ago. Now when I boot my laptop everything appears to be fine, I am able to get in to Windows (XP) and the computer appears to be working, BUT 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THE COMPUTER DIES SHORTLY AFTER BOOTING. The computer dies in exactly the same way as when you force it to switch off (ie. by pressing and holding the power button). It makes exactly the same noise (I think this is the fan slowing switching off or something). It does not blue screen, it simply dies. The total time between turning the computer on and the power going is between 3 and 4 minutes. I thought this might be to do with the power in my house, but nothing else cuts out when the laptop does (for example if there are fluctuations in the power supply in my room you would expect my desklamp ... Answer:Lenovo 3000 N100 - Sudden power loss

Hi Jonners_1, What I would suggest first of all is to try to use your laptop just on main power, with the battery taken out. I'm pretty sure that your laptop will run just fine. And yes, if the battery is faulty and wasn't able to charge this is what will happen, laptop doesn't use power directly from ac adapter it has to go through the battery. You can also try with another ac adapter if you have one, but sounds like you'll have to buy a new battery.

Hi

I have a ZyXEL 600 wireless router - it has worked without issues for years.

However yesterday evening my wireless router suddenly stopped broadcasting a signal.

2 different PC's and a wifi dongle attached to our TV were suddenly all unable to find my network.

The WLAN light on the router was still lit up. I connected my Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and it worked fine. I connected to the router and it said there were no errors.

I phoned ZyXEL support this morning and they dialled in, confirmed the router was reporting it was working. They installed inSSIDer on my PC and verified no signal was being picked up - but other local wireless networks were being picked up.

They suggested buying another modem as it was very old and could have just reached the end of its life.

So I bought a brand new Sitecom 300N x2 modem this morning, connected it up and have the exact same problem. All the right lights are on the modem (solid WLAN, DSL and Internet lights), I can connect via an ethernet cable but none of my devices can find a the wireless browser (but can find other networks and connect to them).

I've spent hours on the phone today to various tech people and gone through channel switching, changing encryption etc but nothing has worked. The router is sat in the same place it has been for the last 3 years and the laptop is inches from it but still no joy.

As far as I can see I've ruled out:

I have been using Firefox 1.5.0.11 on my old WIN 98SE laptop. My ISP is RoadRunner, and they recently discontinued support and antivirus for WIN 98. Here's a summary of what suddenly happened when I last opened Firefox:

1) All my toolbar customization was gone.
2) All my search engines were gone from the drop-down box.
3) All my bookmarks were gone.
4) Firefox suddenly was opening in a non-maximized window. If I maximized it and closed it, it still opened not maximized, even if the computer was shut down in between.

The bookmark problem had happened to me once before, and I had saved the procedure for restoring them and was able to do so without any trouble. But when I went to the Mozilla site (using Firefox) to re-download the search engine add-ons, I got an error message stating that I needed a Mozilla-compatible browser like Firefox to download add-ons!

And... when I re-customized the toolbars by rearranging the elements, Firefox wouldn't save what I did. Every new window that opened had the default arrangement, and if I closed and reopened the browser, the customization was lost. Rebooting did nothing to help anything.

Does anyone have a clue what has happened and how to fix it? Thanks!

P.S. Does anyone know of an antivirus program that still supports (or at least is compatible with) WIN 98SE?

Answer:Solved: Firefox sudden loss of customization and bookmarks

Hi kayak1,

You might try deleting the localstore.rdf in the Profile folder. If it gets corrupted, it seriously messes up customizations.
This is from Mozilla to find the Profile folder.
Windows 95, 98, and ME

Profile folders are in one of these locations:

* C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
* C:\Windows\Profiles\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder> . Click to expand...

Be sure to have Firefox closed before deleting the localstore.rdf file. When you restart Firefox, a new one will be created. You will be starting with the defaults, but it should retain any future customizations.
Be careful to NOT DELETE the one in the Program folder, just the one in the Profile.

It's quite possible you've picked up a virus if you've been without an AV program.
That can also seriously mess up Firefox.
Avast still supports Win 98 and they have a free version. DOWNLOAD HERE.

So I'm having a very annoying issue. At around 11pm last night, my PC completely lost access to the internet. It is definitely not my connection, as the two other PCs in my house which are connected through the same router as mine still have access to the internet. However, if I use system restore and restore my PC to July 12 (about 3 days ago), my internet access works fine.

I have tried any restore points earlier than that, but I found ... Read more

assume you are connected with an ethernet line from this router not wireless in which case I suspect your network adapter on the motherboard maybe going bad if you are on a wired connection then try installing a standalone pci etherneet adapter. if you doing wireless...then try a different wireless network adapter that plugs inte a usb port...

I was running windows vista normally, with a broadband connection through a NetComm modem, when the internet connection suddenly dropped out. I disconnected and reconnected the modem and rebooted the computer, however this did not solve the problem. Other computers in my house, connected through the same modem, did experience the drop-out but reconnected upon reboot. I tried using the diagnose connection problem feature of IE 7, however a dialog came up about Host Service has stopped working, and the diagnosing feature then stopped. This dialog appeared every time I attempted this diagnosis, even after several reboots. I disable AVG and Defender, still no luck. I have never in the past experienced a drop-out which could not be fixed upon reboot, and where other computers on the same network were able to connect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Sudden internet connection loss, can't find solution

I lost my connection and after several hours of tech support and an inhome tech. we got it back. The solution, shut down and DISCONNECT POWER CORD. None of the techs believed it but I'm connected now and have been since 1/17/08. The tech was in the process of switching mother boards and had shut down and disconnected the power cord. He remembered that he needed some info from the compuer and reconnected. And we had internet. The tech said this was a first for him and hadn't had to do it this way in years.

Within a day I suddenly lost about 18GB of free space on my hard drive. About a week ago I noticed that I had only 5% free space on my 90+GB hard drive. I deleted, moved programs and files and finally got it up to 22%. Then a day or so later it was down to 3%, without my doing anything unusual. I then removed more files and got it up to 6%. But something is wrong. I've run the degragmenter, disk cleanup, removed temp files by running %temp% and deleting the files that came up. I have searched for all files larger than 1GB, but found nothing. My ZoneAlarm AV and spyware scans have turned up nothing. I haven't searched system files as I don't know how to do that. I ran RegCure--no new space from that operation. I'm running out of things to do short of restoring back to an earlier time using a Ghost backup on an external drive--and that's not a guaranteed cure because I am not sure when this problem started. I am running Windows XP Pro. BTW, when I reboot, the free space remains about the same.

My symptoms were: Computer screen would randomly develop horizontal lines of mixed blocky colors.Computer would randomly lockup rendering all buttons inoperative, except power button (long press).Computer would randomly power off just like pulling the battery off, with or without AC adapter. This is what I found: Under the lower memory module cover, I noticed that one end of a piece of shielding tape that crosses a divider between the two DIMM connector had come loose, and was making intermittent contact with the pins on the back of the DIMM connector. I pushed the corner of the tape back down with a small eyeglass screwdriver. For now, all my problems have disappeared. I hope this works for you too.

So I am having computer problems :(.... basically my computer's performance is much lower than it has been in the past... i have been using it for about half a year and then all of the sudden performance dropped... I have never seen my cpu go over 60%... the performance loss is most noticable in startup and when playing audio because of the skipping.

I really would appreciate the help because i think it must be some kind of virus.

This is my first build and it was going swimming for about two months but since late October/early November I've been having issues. Either A) my monitor will suddenly lose signal and my hard drive suddenly sounds inactive (no ticks/whurs that signal activity) or B) the computer restarts and stalls on the motherboard splash screen.

There are two times specifically when this occurs. The first is when I bring my computer out of hibernation. The above situation happens nearly 100% of the time within the first 10 minutes of awaking. The second is whenever I'm running a scan with Adaware. I might get 10 minutes in to the scan, I might get 20 minutes in, but sooner or later it's always kicks out. In both situations the CPU heats up from its usual high 20s/low 30s (celcius) to somewhere around 50 and draws 100+ W of power.

"Get a better power supply, it's kicking out because it's drawing more power than the PSU can suply" internet searches and my tech buddies advised. Well, I shouldn't need one. My build's specs aren't power intensive at all. But I did anyways. Now I've got a 700W OCZ PSU for what should be a <400W system. Guess what? Still kicking out.

I'm at my wits end, any ideas?

Over the weekend everything was fine until I turned on my Microsoft Surface first thing this morning and the menu list on the left has vanished...? The apps are not working and it's asking me to reinstall them all but when I do it doesn't work...? I would take a guess that they're corrupt for some bizarre reason. I'm not sure if this is only related to Microsoft Surface or has anybody else experienced the same problem. I'm not bothering with 10163 as it's very buggy so I will wait until 10164 or 10165 whatever the next number will be...?

my daughter was messing around the computer and she unplugged the mouse by accdent, well now everytime i plug anything into the usb ports it says windows does not recignize the device. im stumped

Answer:usb ports not working all of a sudden

Have you tried a system restore to a date before this happened?

If that fails, I would plug in a ps2 mouse so you can complete this process.
Go to device mgr and remove ALL devices under usb. Unplug any usb device. Reboot twice and see if your ports are now working.

Hi There.

I have been chatting with Tim in the Malware forum, and he has kindly checked my computer for any further malware problems, but it appears to be clean now but I still have a problem.

I am cutting and pasting my post that was to Tim who suggested I come to the soft ware section now to sort this part out.

Hoping someone can please help me here.

Kind Regards,

Maureen.

Tim, I down loaded what I thought to be a free version of RegCure, and then my problems started. IE, I can't use any usb port or the built in media card reader etc. I turned to Microsoft Security Essentials, and they dragged out and quarantined the RegCure, calling it Malware. I certainly did not have any problems until I downloaded this. Now when I place a camera lead in a usb port, It is trying to connect for ever without succeeding and if I try to abort the mssion, then I am left with a blank desk top, and have to turn off manually. Thats all I can really say.

Everything is fine re the drivers, but windows explorer can't get to read anything .

Maureen.

Answer:Can anyone please help me re loss of use of usb ports and card reader etc?

Greetings, Maureen.

We need to know the make, model #, service tag #, etc. of your machine.

If possible, download and install Everest, a free system information tool.

Run Everest and click Report (top menu) > Report Wizard > Next.
Choose System Summary Only > Next - Choose Plain Text > Finish and wait for report to generate.
Click Save to File and leave the File Name as Report.
Click the Save as Type dropdown and choose Report files (*txt) and click Save (n.b. Save to desktop, use Browse to locate desktop)

Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.
