Preferred Solution: avast smart shield not running

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: avast smart shield not running

an happen with a corrupt update. rmove avast with the removal tool click here and reinstall.

I am having a problem in my sister's laptop. She does have antivirus installed (AVG Internet Security). However, its license expired, so I downgraded it to free version. After, downgrading it, I installed Avast! as it's antivirus and decided to uninstall AVG. Then, a few minutes ago after rebooting the laptop, a window opened saying that Trojan is infecting my computer, I heal it.. Then, another pops out. Heal and heal and heal..

After doing it, I rebooted the laptop thinking that it will refresh the system. Unfortunately, after rebooting, I cannot connect to Internet now. :cry :cry :cry Help me please? I already performed the Malware removing however, it did not help the laptop. I attached the files you asked me.. Please, help please? Thank you!

Hello guys

was wondering if any body knows a way around the software called Smart Shield by centurion. the software basically removes any data you save to the hard drive when you restart the computer. was hoping to install quake on to the school computers so that me and the guys can play a network game or 2 in our spare periods. any help would be great thanx

Answer:Smart Shield from centurion

Welcome to MG.

I am sorry to say that you probably won't get any help here to manipulate computers that do not belong to you. There is a reason that schools and other institutions put safeguards on their computers; otherwise these would stop functioning within a short period of time.

I really like Avast AV very much. I have a question about the Web Shield part of the program. On the program itself, generally 6 of the 7 modules are running. I do not have Outlook or MS Exchange so for that area the program says, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." (or something like that.)

About once a month, maybe twice a month, I will notice 5 of the 7 providers running and the program will have one of the Web Shields running. However, it will say, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." (instead of saying, "The Provider is currently running." The funny part is that when I go to webpages and do a check, the Web Sheld is still scanning them. So on the Web Shield thing, what is Avast waiting for?

This is a common issue with the program based on Internet Searches. I don't know if this is a bug or the way that Avast 4.8 works. Can you also provide information about the two different shields that the program uses? One is the Web Shield, the other is called the P2P Shield.

The updates are working fine. Oh, it hasn't happend often enough, but so far the only way that I can get the Web Shield back to not saying, "The Program is Waiting for a Subsystem to Start." is to do a reboot.

Hi, and thanks for taking a look. Been trying to scrub SMHDD/SecShield and got most, but not all out. Run several scans with GMER, NPE, HitmanPro, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Still don't trust it, bec when I run RKill it still kills explorer.exe and System32\rundll32.exe.

NPE got most of the nasty stuff, but a subsequent Malwarebytes Anti-Malware still came up with 18 infections. Ran NPE again and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware came up with zero, but RKill still shot those two. There was something in explorer.exe (it was chewing up memory) but that seems gone.

Any thoughts on how I can try to get an all-clear? Thanks again for your help...

I recently went from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5 and am pleased with the new version. I note that it has a Behavior Shield and can't recall if the earlier version also had. What I would like to know is this: does the Behavior Shield make Threatfire, which I also use, redundant?

Unfortunately, although I tried to glean an answer from Avast's Help Center, I do not know enough about computers to know what the description there of the Behavior Shield amounts to: it 'monitors all activity on your computer and detects and blocks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware. It does this by continuously monitoring your computer's entry points using special sensors to identify anything suspicious.'

I have XP, SP 3.

Thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Avast 5's Behavior Shield and Threatfire

Behavior shield - monitors all activity on your computer and detects and bloxks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware. It does this by continuously monitoring your computer's entry points using special sensors to identify anything suspicious.avast! 5.0 Quick User GuideThreatFire monitors your machines activity and uses an intelligent behavioral engine to alert you about malicious behavior rather than rely on signatures. - How ThreatFire WorksAs such there will be some redundancy using both but their technology is different and therefore, what is detected may vary.

Thanks for your time.

I just installed Antivir and felt naked without a web shield, so I reinstalled everything in Avast! except the standard shield.

In theory, this should work, however the apps froze on startup, so I set Avast! to launch after all other applications load and they seem to like each other now.

What I'm here to ask is whether this should theoretically cause any problems.

Please don't reply with, "OMG YOU ONLY NEED ONE ANTIVIRUS" because I am only running one antivirus. My reasoning for running both apps is so that the Avast! web shield will take effect during browsing, and Avira will handle everything locally. The issue I have with using Avast! for everything is that it seems to constantly scan all my files, without letting me set it to just "scan on application read/write" which causes major slowdowns.

Wow no one has any experience with this pairing? That's amazing.
OK thanks anyway.

Greetings all! I apologize if this isn't the right place for this! I'm trying to help my boss get his computer squared away and I'm having issues with Avast Web Shield popping up constantly. As of the typing of this message, it seems to have slowed down a little bit, but I want to make sure the problem is solved and that there is not going to be any issues going forward for him!

I would try to do something myself, but every time I've searched anything online about this, it says that every case is different and that solutions only work in that particular situation.

You have the option to turn off the Web Shield permanently according to the info in link below.

Hi everyone,

new beta version 17.5.2298 is released.

What's new:
- Tiny Firewall for blocking EternalBlue exploit - (internal) It is a part of StreamFilter, turned ON/OFF by Online Shield
- internal fixes

As many of you are aware Avast and AVG are 1 company now. Cause development of 2 different UIs takes different time, in this beta we introduce Ransomware shield in AVG beta now. You can expect Ransomware shield in Avast in next betas.

If you wanna try Ransomware protection in AVG build, check this link:
- AVG Antivirus Beta 17.5.3017

Download links:
BETA testing - Overview & Download links

Answer:Finally,the ransomware shield in avast

Good, but why they need a whole new tiny shield for stopping an exploit and this has to go through beta and be delivered after tests!? There are firewalls for blocking ports like the Windows Firewall and the Avast one in paid solutions. Maybe it is a sign that they need something like Norton's IPS?

Hello,

My son got into some bad stuff which led me to this forum a few months back. After some research I went with Avast Anti Virus (free version), Malware Bytes (paid version), and Comodo Firewall (free version). I have had a lot of slow behavior when surfing and doing email. The cursor is unstable and I cannot type things without a long wait. I turned of the Avast Behavior Shield and everything is a lot better. What have I lost turing off this feature? There are still several other Avast Shields running along with the Malware Bytes and Comodo.

Any suggestions? Should I try a different AV program?

Thanks,

Dave

Answer:Avast 5 Behavior Shield Slows Down XP?

hello daveplaysbass,The behaviour shield is a bit of a mystery! There's quite a few questions about it on the Avast forums and no real answers. I think the guys on there have been waiting for months for a 'promised' explanation from an Avast official. Found out a few things tho. This is a quote from an interview with a Avast official ...."The Behavior Shield that we shipped in version 5.0 is a new component that is going to be further developed moving forward. For example, in version 5.1, we will be adding more sensors that will allow for even finer-grain filtering. For now, the Behavior Shield is focused on exploits coming via typical mechanisms (browser, PDF reader, and flash vulnerabilities, for example). It also closely monitors all kernel-mode code (drivers) loaded into the operating system, and is able to detect zero-day rootkits."So whilst it's new and not operating at it's fullest potential, it still is an important part of Avast! It's not supposed to use hardly any system resources, but a few people have had problems with it conflicting with other software. One person had the problem of it conflicting with the 'Payed' version of Malwarebytes. And thats interesting because my set up is the same as yours, Avast(free), Comodo firewall(free) but i have the Free version of Malwarebytes, and i have no problems with conflicts. Its worth checking to see if there's any information in the Behaviour Shield report( at the bottom of the Behaviour shield page) in th... the behaviour shield is yet not improved....

i still see the shield is not yet fully operational on auto decide it should be able to block atleast 50% of malware beahviour atleast...

i see the behav shield records suspicious events but doesnt block them neither no alerts are displayed....why??

I saw all this in my tests...behav shield records suspicious events but doesnt display a pop-up and neither blocks it....

when avast sees something bad is suspicious is going on it should block it....what's the deal with that??

Answer:no improvement in avast 7 for behaviour shield.

Likely Behavior Shield uses heuristics analysis so therefore a file that's known to be malicious/suspicious will popup so for Sandbox feature too.

When its set to ask a behavior popup must shown with the option.

Hello!

Brand new computer (well, used, but new to me) and the same old virus problems.

The Avast Behavior Shield turns itself off every time I hit "Connect" on VZAccess manager during the last 24 hours. Avast does warn me that it's off and I click it back on manually. Says it's back on, but I have my doubts.

Particularly as when I tried to surf eBay, the website suddenly thought I lived in the Czech Republic. Yeah, I've changed my eBay password and my PayPal on a friend's clean computer already.

Last April, a gentle person from Europe helped someone with this same problem. I tried to follow the advice, but find I need some help. What I've done: 1) Run Malwarebytes software daily.2) Uninstalled Avast and reinstalled it.3) Installed IE 11.4) Have trouble with downloads. I get Current Security settings do not allow download. I've gone into Internet Options and attempted to change all settings to allow file downloads. I accomplished this once, but then it does not last.5) I've run Tweaking.com, Windows Repair All-in-one. The Avast Web Shield is still popping up. Thanks for any help!Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

Good day,

I've been getting a lot of alert from avast as per the topic title. The specifics of it are as below

Object: hxxp://69.65.5.105/ (Changed tt to xx in the URL for obvious reason)
Infection: URL:Mal
Process: C:\Program Files (x86)\FileZilla Server\FileZilla Server.exe

Avast will keep on alerting me at a very random interval. sometimes as often as once every 4-5 minutes. When I stop the FileZilla Server service, the alert will stop too. As soon as I start the service again, avast will immediately start alerting me again. One peculiar things I have noticed since avast started alerting me on this is that I cannot download any file directly from the browser (Chrome, Firefox) anymore. I started noticing this one when I wanted to download DDS.

Anyway, I've got my hand on the DDS software from another PC. Unfortunately running the software gave me the following error message

"DDS is not meant to run in 'Compatibility Mode'. The program shall now exit."

Thus I'm not able to produce the logs to accompany this post. By the way, I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit). I'm pretty sure I'm infected and any help will be much appreciated.

So basically I only installed the behavior shield from the avast installation wizard. I was thinking having Kaspersky as my main AV along with avast's behavior blocker is a good set up. However, admittingly I am a novice, and I don't know if these two will clash. So far, everything seems to be going smoothly, but the WD notification icon is displaying that X and is saying I shouldn't have more than one AV installed. Thanks.

Answer:Using Kaspersky free with only Avast Behavior Shield installed.

I personally think it should work ok running these 2 programs if Avast is only enabled for behavior blocking.

Hello!

I installed Avast recently and have the premium trial version of it at the moment. Every so often, there's a notification that pops up with "Avast! Web Shield has blocked a harmful webpage or file", and some random website. It notifies that it's running through Chrome even when I'm not currently running it (I'm mostly using Firefox). I believe my computer may be infected because I started seeing ads that appear normally where they shouldn't (with a description like ads by deall2ddeualit), and some Firefox addons that enabled these ads that were installed without me knowing about it.
Somewhat related, I allowed a scan from Avast of the computer files while it was booting up and accidentally unplugged the power which turned off the computer mid scan. When I booted it up again, I was entered into something like a temporary account where all my saved documents were pretty much gone. After another reboot, it did the same thing except now it stated that the copy of windows was not genuine. And after a third reboot, everything seemed restored. However, it feels as though start up is somewhat slow now. I'm not quite sure what happened here.
I'm not quite sure where to start, but I believe I need to provide a log? How do I go about doing that?

Q. 1.There is a Heuristic Scale and Test Whole file box in File shield.
Should I Scale up it to high (from normal) and check the "Test whole File" box, for better protection?

Q 2. There are two tabs in File Shield settings, "Scan when opening" and "Scan when Writing"
Should I tick the Scan All files in both Opening and Writing for better Protection? (It will scan all files that are being opened or written in the system but there will be negative impact that IDC)

Q. 3. Should I tick "All Packers" or go with Default packers.

Q. 4. Should I activate Avast Aggressive Hardened mode because I don't like Voodooshield as it shows its Pro Version Advertisement in every Startup which is too much annoying for me.

Hello Guys,
My system:
Toshiba / Satellite C55-A / Intel ® Celeron ® N2820
64 bit Windows 8.1
I am at the end of my rope. I have tried everything. First, let me say I am not good at technical things on a computer, just enough to be dangerous. So if some things I say seem crazy, they probably are. So here is the story. About a week ago I received a email on my go daddy webmail. www.login.securserver.net. That is how I long into that email. Now, that is not my main email. My main email is gmail, which I use the most.
The email I received on the go daddy email was a Notice of Apperance in Court #00406341. It contained a zip file, Court Notification 00406341.zip. Of course being stupid, I unzipped the file, thinking it was something important, since I have some court cases ongoing for business.
With research I think it is a Kuluoz or another one that starts with A. cant remember.
It put a zip file in my downloads folder Court_Notification_00406341.doc, which shows as File Type: Java Script file, 8.84kb. That is the only one I noticed, not sure if they are more somewhere. Then things started getting a little weird. Nothing major, I still get emails, still send them, and my system seems to be running normally, except for Avast Mail Shield security exclusions , It keeps poping up at least 40 times a day, saying

Now, here I used to get different info, like websit... Read more

We will start with FRST to remove some items from the log.

Usually Iam only on this site once or twice per day so you may not get a reply from me until the next day.

Copy/paste whats below in the box into notepad. Save it as fixlist.txt in the same location you have FRST, your desktop. Click the FRST icon like before and this time click on the fix button just once. When done you will find a fixlog on your desktop. Please post the fixlog in your reply. Machine may reboot to finish the process.

Hello, Thanks for being there for us.
I have a problem with my computer. After downloading a PDF file which instead of opening, suddenly disappeared and I cannot locate it. From there on whenever I open Firefox or iexplorer, Avast starts alerting me that it’s blocking a harmful website or file. Although these alerts stop when I go offline and so far the computer is running properly. Kindly assist me to fix this problem.

Thanks alot.

Working on a computer with 32-bit Vista. Windows Updates appear to be stuck - any updates are rolled back with the error of them "not being configured properly". Tried Googling and trying individual update solutions, but no luck.

PC had Microsoft Security Essentials installed, I removed it and installed Avast. Although Avast installs, the Web shield appears to be permanently disabled.

I have run Adwcleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Eset online scanner. A few low-level threats were found and cleaned, but nothing has changed with the symptoms above.

Thanks for the help!

Every time I click on the Account hyperlink to access my YouTube account on YouTube Avast Network Shield blocks the attempt. This is obviously a false alarm but I don't see a option to edit it's block list or to make a exception though I see it for the Web Shield. Is there anyway to fix this or do I have to pause it each time I want to access the account page on YouTube because thats the only thing that works.

Cleaning up my daughters computer - Dell Vostro 260 - Intel I5-2400, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Ran Malwarebytes, adwcleaner and CCleaner. Installed avast free and ran boot time scan.

Now receive continuing popups from avast stating:

avast! Web Shield has blocked a harmful webpage or file.
Object: hxxp://on-bend.com/b/opt/CB8F9...............
Infection: URL:Mal Process: c:\Windows\explorer.exe

Also appears that MS Update does not work and some downloads are being blocked.

Ran DDS as directed. Only produced Attach.txt file (Below). Rechecked and the DDS.txt box was checked - reran but did not produce this file.

Thanks in advance!!

I recently had to restore from a system image (full restore of C:\ drive where my program and system files are kept, no changes to D:\ so my personal files weren't reset, and probably some temp files and preferences weren't either) and after doing so, and then reinstalling avast onto this system image (the image was made at a time when I had a different antivirus) I encountered a problem with firefox which seems to be something to do with conflicts with it and avast.
Immediately after the system imaging firefox worked fine, and immediately after avast's installation avast worked fine too. The I updated both of them to the latest state, restarted and logged back on. This time when I opened avast to go to google I got a warning about a certificate on google's page being unrecognised (Unfortunately I can't remember the exact wording), But I was able to follow some of the options on the dialogue brought up by firefox and see a certificate related to avast was causing the issues. I tested by temporarily disbaling avast's web and mail shields and opening firefox again, that time it went to google.co.uk without issues. I turned the web and mail shields of avast back on and I got the same certificate problem again.
Eventually I used the "I know the risks button" in firefox and created an exception, which I think might not have been the best way to solve this. Because I still had problems loading other https pages (for exmaple the links to google plus or gmail from the google home pa... Read more

I keep getting messages from avast saying it is blocking a webpage or file. My task manager shows there are a lot of processes running. My computer is acting really slow now, and it started making buzzing noises, and on startup the fan is making an incredible racket as well. Malwarebytes hasn't found anything. What should I do? I saw other people post, but there were warnings not to repeat these things.

Each warning has three fields, object: infection: and Process:
usually says http;//f0fff0...... or fa8072 or maybe go.wymedia

infection is always url mal
and process is generally windows syswow64/dllhost or program files....iexplores/exe

I have gotten an error message from Avast when downloading email.

The message says that Avast mail shield cannot scan the emails because
I have an SSL secure connection configured in the mail client, Outlook Express 6.

Both incoming and outgoing server ports have "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" ticked ON.

I think this setting may be required for att.yahoo.com servers. :confused

Should I just disable the mail guard in Avast?

Thanks

2 or three days ago I started having frequent messages from Avast! about harmful pages.

The gist of the message is:

Infection: URL:Mal

Avast! takes me to this page when I click more details on the pop-up: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=epoho6&s=8#.U5n4VPldWSo

As in the other posts my laptop restarted itself last night and since then whenever I have been connected to the internet I keep receiving notifications from Avast saying that a threat was blocked:

Answer:Avast realtime shield constantly pops up infections when connected to internet

Hello and welcome. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until I’ve given you the “All clear.” Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean! Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.Press Scan button. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply. The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Hello! Hope I'm in the right place!

Last night I was just playing RuneScape and had two safe webpages open, when suddenly my computer restarted on its own for no reason. After restarting, I logged back in and now my Avast! keeps popping up saying that it has blocked a malicious URL, even when I'm not using the internet. Here is what it says:

avast! Web Shield has blocked a harmful webpage or file

Object: (Various, I will post pictures)

Infection: URL:Mal

Process: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe

I have ran Malwarebytes, Rkill, aswMBR, and Avast, all have come up clean except Malwarebytes, I will post my logs for aswMBR and Rkill as I do not know how for Avast! and every time I try to export my log for MBAM it keeps crashing.

This isn't affecting my computer's performance, other than the MBAM thing, but it is very annoying and I hope someone can help me solve this issue.

I have looking at my network shield in Avast! Pro. I've noticed that whenever I open save file prompt I see http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ spike.
It does not indicate infection and just goes on, is this stuff normal?

Malwarebytes doesn't see anything wrong. I generally get a http://192.168.1.1:5678/igd.xml spike precedes the 127... spike

Avast boot scan also finds nothing
Typing http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ into Run gets "Bad Request - Invalid Hostname

HTTP Error 400. The request hostname is invalid."
Can anyone else on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit try this for themselves?

Open a save file prompt and look at your network shield at the same time and see if that connection or a similar connection shows up.

I don't seem to have any weird issues otherwise.

I have attached the DDS stuff

I've got something screwy going on with my home WinXP box, and I'm hoping someone here can point me in the direction of a solution to the problem.
I'm running XP Home, Service Pack 2, on a machine with (according to the properties tag) 960MB RAM. I've been running Avast antivirus, and allowing it to update definitions automatically. At the time this incident happened, the most recent update it had acquired was from yesterday morning.
There was a power outage at my house yesterday morning, lasting for ~2 minutes. I powered the system back on after that, and everything appeared to be working; I mention this merely for completeness of information.
The first symptom of my problem occured yesterday afternoon. I heard the little 'ding' sound made by a download finishing, during a time where I had no downloads running, and within a few minutes of this, my system seemed to grind to a halt. Anything I already had running would continue to work, but I couldn't open anything new, including the windows task manager, nor could I get new pages to load in the copy of Firefox I was running. I was planning to visit my parents' house at that point, so I powered the system down and took it with me. I had to manually power the system down (done via the on/off switch just above the power cable socket); the attempt to shut the system down fell victim to the same halt as everything else.
For the record, I may have had Spider Solitare up when I heard the ding, an... Read more

AVG8 and I have the resident shield switched off.But when you go into Components.Resident shield. It tells you resident shield is turned off.But underneath it tells you that the resident shield is running since I switched my computer on.So far over 1 hour and 15 minutes.Anybody have any views on what to do.Not that worried about it.Probably an error of some sort.

Answer:Resident Shield still running in AVG

Ok.Decided to turn Resident Shield back on.Does not look as though there is any problem with the CPU so will leave it on and see if it runs Ok.

Hi all,Today I had a problem with my McAfee spamkiller which was resolved with online help from McAfee. I was insrructed to update my version and it worked. Simple.....Later todat my PC became VERY slow so I looked in my task manager and found that McShield.exe was using almost 100% of my CPU leaving my PC useless. After about an hour or so it just stops and everything returns to normal.I cannot back in touch with McAfee surrport for what ever reason and I have found myself a bit stuffed.I have run Spybot and all my McAfee programs and found no problem there.PLEASE HELP.THANKYOU IN ADVANCE.

Answer:McAfee - Mc Shield problem cpu running 100%

Probably best thing to try first is uninstall it completely then re-install it again. See if that makes any difference.

Hi,

I've just installed Avast! free antivirus on my Windows 7 PC. The installation installed something called the Mail Shield. Is there any point in having this turned on if I only access my emails using Yahoo's webmail service? Does it only scan mail if I use a client such as Windows Live Mail 2011?

Thanks in Advance!

Answer:Do I need the Avast Free Mail Shield if I use Yahoo Mail online

You don't need it if you are using a web based mail like yahoo. You can do a custom install of avast and untick the mail shield.

My computer (running on Windows XP) was infected by the Security Shield virus ~2 days ago. I googled and found instructions to remove it at bleepingcomputer, including downloading and running Malwarebytes. I eventually got the program running, however as it took >4 hrs to scan someone unknowingly closed down my computer while I was away.

Nonetheless, the next time I started the computer the Security Shield didn't pop up anymore, instead I had a pop-up message saying 'Missing Virus Definitions: VPTray.exe - Ordinal Not Found'. Again I googled and found someone with similar experience, and their problem was solved after using ComboFix. I realise now that I probably shouldn't have done what I did, which was downloading and running ComboFix myself. Anyway, after restarting my computer twice ComboFix found a problem with 'rootkit'.

I ran Malwarebytes again, and it found 2 instances of 'rootkit.0access.h', which it quarantined/deleted.

While I don't get the pop-up messages anymore, I now encounter audio of ads running in the background and clicking noises instead. When I open the Windows Task Manager I can see that there is a few 'QEYV74~1.com' under user name 'system' which is pretty suspicious.

I am fairly certain my computer is still infected by some virus which is beyond my amateur skills to fix, so am asking for help here.

I tried to follow the instructions about DDS and GMER logs, however, my computer crashed tw... Read more

Hi,

Forgive me if this has already been resolved.

I had read a post about people having problems running both together. I tried to search for the post, but got a msg that it had moved....still could not get to it.

Now, to the point. After reading the post regarding a problem I installed Avast, ran a AVG full pc scan and did not have any problems, Avast was alos running in the background. The both reported no threats.

Answer:running AVG 9.0 and Avast together

Well the problem comes when they both find the same infection and they tend to fight over it which it is possible to run into some problems but I havent seen that in YEARS and there are other issues out there as well. What I do is run AVG free and Malwarebytes side by side in real time. If you want to test your setup, you need to find some infected sites and let them download to your machine and see how they each respond to the infection.

I had accidentally installed something with a virus, so I brought my computer to a repair shop. They never went inside the computer or anything, but they installed and ran AVG, and after that they ran Avast!, after Avast! they ran Malwarebytes, and then they ran CCleaner. They also uninstalled all of them after they finished, but left on extensions such as Web of Trust, Disconnect and Ad Blocker. Now, my computer is super slow when doing basic tasks such as YouTube -- which it never has had any problem running over 100 tabs and playing like 10 of them! YouTube stutters and freezes and repeats audio or frames, and it's really scary (sometimes earbleedingly loud) and annoying. My computer has nothing taking up 99% of RAM or Disk, CPU, or Network.

To add on, now, when I download a game from Steam, my entire computer has system-wide lag of my mouse and the entire computer and I can't even voice chat without earbleeding audio that freezes and repeats so much that it actually scares me. My computer takes a few extra seconds to load anything, and anything that installs something will give me massive lag even if it's not intensive.

My computer has never ever ever had any of these problems and I don't really know what happened to cause it, but it is now incredibly slow. Can anyone recommend me anything I can do to speed it up? Question: avast running?

I don't know what the people in my house did, but the Avast icon is no longer in the start up tray at the bottom of my screen! Why? What happened? Is it still running like it is supposed to? How do I get it back? I looked all through the Avast settings menu and couldn't figure it out. Help please.

Also, the PC Tools firewall icon is no longer there too! I have click on the icons in the desktop for them to show up in the start up tray.

Have you tried restarting them? Check your processes in task manager and look for ashserv.exe that's the Avast main program I believe and firewallGUI.exe is part of PCTools.

I've seen mention of this before, and I just saw whs mention it in the Avira thread. Do these two indeed play nice together? I have Avast, but also run Emsisoft with active guard, and now SAS with active guard ( I just won a lifetime pro version in a giveaway, woo hoo!). Would MSE play well with all of this do you think? I already have Avira installed without the active guard as a 2nd, on demand scanner, and have never had a virus, ever. Just curious if it is documented that Avast and MSE work together, or is it just a common experience? Thanks in advance for any info

A Guy

Answer:Running Avast and MSE together

Yes Bill. Avast and MSE can run together with real time protection without hampering the system performance. I m using these 2 for a long time and never had any issues. BTW, I would recommend you remove Emsisoft or disable the active guard. Otherwise, its a bit overkill.

I am new to this site, what a wealth of info.

I have a older Toshiba laptop Intel Pent M 1.2 GHZ w/ 512 ram. My CPU has been real slow and has had issues w/ other searches popping up, misdirected searches, and sometimes will not power down w/o holding the pwr button for 5 sec.

It had the AV security suite virus that was removed but it still seems slow. I have been reading up on this forum and under reccommendations have installed Avast. It was taking a long time to install, I thought was my Hughesnet over usage, until today. It again would not turn off, When I brought it to the office, it would not open wirless network connections then it bogged down and was unresponsive. I pwred off and retarted.

I started the AVAST complete scan which seemed slow, which started around 13mb/sec and has been slowing down. Currently it is 37% at an hour. I don't have alot of files on the CPU. Probably alot of Junk that needs to be removed. I tried to open the C drive to post the amt of memory used, but it just hanggs there half open. Idle process is around 75%.

I am hopeing it will pick something up, Curious to what your thoughts are.

EDIT : Finally got through it, No errors. I am going through the steps for a slow cpu in Safe mode w/ no problems, I need to run the Scan disk back w/ normal startup. Will see if I still have lockin errors.

Thanks
Steve

Answer:Running Avast for 1st time

The speed and ability to complete an anti-virus or anti-malware scan depends on a variety of factors. The program itself and how its scanning engine is designed to scan: using a signature database vs heuristic scanning or a combination of both.Options to scan for spyware, adware, riskware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPS).Options to scan memory, boot sectors, registry and alternate data streams (ADS).Type of scan performed: Deep, Quick or Custom scanning. What action has to be performed when malware is detected.A computer's hard drive size.Disk used capacity (number of files to include temporary files) that have to be scanned.Types of files (.exe, .dll, .sys, .cab, archived, compressed, packed, email, etc) that are scanned.Whether external drives are included in the scan.Competition for and utilization of system resources by the scanner.Other running processes and programs in the background.Interference from malware.Interference from the user.To speed up your scans, uninstall unnecessary programs, clean out the temporary files or use ATF Cleaner first, temporarily disable any other real-time protection tools, close all open programs and do not use the computer during the scan. If the scan still seems slow or hangs, then try performing the scan in "safe mode".Using two security scanning engines at the same time can cause each to interfere with the other, cause systems hangs, false detections, unreliable results and other unpredictable behavior.Note: It is not unusual for ... I had been running Avast free for some time and I got messages that Avast was to expire in x days, attempts to renew the free subscription kept returning me to a paywall, so i tried uninstalling Avast and reinstalling a new free version with the same results (Avast was to expire in x days, attempts to renew the free subscription kept returning me to a paywall).

In frustration I uninstalled Avast and installed AVG free, but AVG tells me it is running in "passive" mode because Avast is running on the computer. Avast does not show on the list of installed components so i did a search for all AVAST and ALWIL files and deleted them, but AVG still tells me it is running in passive mode because Avast is running ... how do i fix this?

I've been attempting to run AVG and Avast together without much success. You may question the advantage or reason of running 2 antivirus programs together, but I see it this way:

Avast is thorough and reliable, but the scan is very long, sometimes more then 5 hours on its most thorough setting. It also has a quick scan that runs at comparable speeds to AVG, about 45 minutes (This is on my computer, a Dell 4300S with Windows XP, so times will most likely vary). Avast is also very customizable too.

Now, AVG is also a very good and free Virus Scanner ( btw both these scanners are free editions) that scans very quickly, quicker then any setting on Avast. It has several features, though not quite as many as Avast and has a much simpler interface.

I feel it bit safer running both, because they both check differently: one is more thorough and one is less, run at different speeds, and are different software in general. There approaches to antivirus prevention are both independent. I figure if I get a virus one doesn't detect the other one will.

Ok, now heres the deal. I've heard I can run both at the same time, but I've had troubling accomplishing that. I had a conversation with one of the mods about my problem and he suggested I post it. Heres my conversation with the mod:

Answer:Problem Running AVG and Avast Together.

With the AVG interface up, click on Program, then select Control Center. When the pop-in menu is up, there are different tabs for those functions. I went through each tab and disabled the functions by unclicking the choices. Then when you click okay and go back, you should see those disabled.

That may help with running both!

A personal preference, but I don't like running Avast with AVG pretty much disabled, so I am back with AVG and Norton (along with my spyware killers).

Hi

My computer was recently infected by the SMART Recovery virus which made it look as though the hard drive was corrupt and hid files and folders. I deleted the rogue files which it created and symptoms of the virus have disappeared. I have also run AVG Free, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Advanced System Care 5 and Hitman Pro which generally found no further problems (other than one piece of malware now removed and some tracking cookies).

While these programs now detect no malware my computer is still running slower than before the initial problem occurred. This makes me suspect that there may be an underlying problem which is not being picked up by these scanners.

How do I establish whether my computer is now malware free??

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have been having some weird issues the past few days, and now, this VRDB icon has suddenly (apparently on its own) jumped-up and starting spinning (generating a back-up?).

Does this mean it "detects" an infection please?

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Avast VRDB suddenly running

It's nothing to worry about. The VRDB is automatically run approximately once every three weeks. It's just placing copies of some Windows files in the chest for safe keeping. I think the default setting is for it to run only when the system is idle. In Avast 5.0, Alwil has done away with the VRDB.

Hi, I am having problems running Internet Explorer after a recent Avast update. I was getting frequent messages about it ' Internet is closing down because of a problem ' when trying to run Google etc Sometimes I could persuade it to run. Every time I clicked on I E a message came up from Avast asking if I wanted to use Google instead, I always clicked on no but yesterday I relented and tried it after seeing that it said I could go back to what I wanted. I tried the but found it a little awkward and missing a few things I wanted.
I decided to go back to IE and found I could not get it to run, all I got was a blank page.
Can anyone suggest a remedy and let me run IE again?
Thanks

Answer:problems with running IE after avast update

Have you got a previous restore point, before you updated Avast. If so, go back to that and see what happens, on whether that overcomes the problem.
Do you have Google Chrome or Mozilla Firebox, as alternatives to Internet Explorer. If you do, then what happens when you try them.
What version of Internet Explorer are you using, also what operating system software.

Users of Avast Antivirus who upgraded to the latest version 12.2.2276 are finding that their Avast Background service is not running as a result of which the antivirus does not work properly.
To fix this issue, you may run C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastEmUpdate.exe and then reboot your computer.
If this does not work for you, download the latest installer from the Avast site - as they have now fixed the issue - and install it on your Windows PC.

can i run avast and malwarebytes at the same time? or it will have a conflict?

Answer:antimalware (malwarebytes) :: can i have it running with avast

The FREE Malwarebytes is an on demand scanner.
It only runs when you open the program and click SCAN.

The pay version of Malwarebytes can be run as a full time scanner.

As far as I know the paid version of Malwarebytes will run side by side with Avast.
I have not heard of problems but you can check on the Avast and the Mbam forums and they may have more info.

I am running AvastIS with the free Mbam with no problems but I have not tried it with pay version.

For the second time in 2 days, my PC froze in the middle of doing a virus check with Avast. First time it happened, I thought perhaps it had a case of "stomach flu". So I shut off and rebooted into safe mode where I was able to complete a thorough scan with Avast. No problems. Check with Ad-Aware and Spybot likewise turned up negative. Assuming it had been a fluke, I continued on my merry way. No problems until today, when I once again tried an Avast check while in Windows. Froze near the half-way point. Don't know where to go at this point, but I know "somethin' ain't right!". Would greatly appreciate any input. I haven't installed any soft/hardware recently. My hp touch smart (windows vista) factory d drive is getting full and I don't understand why. I have 12G on drive with 1.93G free space left. I wouldn't have noticed except the computer is running slowly. I have done a scan, disk clean up, but disk defragmenter won't run.

The c drive has 453GB and has 335GB free space. My files seemed to be saved to the d drive and the c drive. When I tried to delete from d drive it deleted from c drive also?

Any help to get my comp up and running faster would be most appreciated.

Answer:Hp touch smart d drive almost full and computer running slow

Normally the D drive is a Recovery option installed by the factory and actually does not play a part in everyday computer use. It should be left alone.

I hope I have posted this in the correct area, as this is my first posting. I have just installed Eset Smart Security 3.0.672.0. It found 6 problems, and I was happy about that. Sorry to say, that was this morning. Now my computer is running as slow as the proverbial "paint drying statement." Everything is slow. To make matters worse, I am on dial up, so it is even worse. Even when typing, it is delayed. What is the problem, and how can I fix it. Must confess, I am just a computer beginner, so go slow !
Thanking you in advance.

Hi.
I am very new to Linux (Ubuntu). Laptop is all of a few days old.

I have downloaded the AVAST for Linux free for homeusers file, and managed to run it and it now appears under Applications/system tools. I started the Avast application and set preferences for virus updates and email notification.

THE THING IS, I am so used to nortons (Yuk!) on windows, that Im all concerned that there is no icon anywhere to be found, telling me in its own sweet way that its monitoring things. Does this AVAST product scan incoming emails, internet downloads etc as they happen, or do I have to go and run a system scan manually all the time? Surely not.

I just know thereĺl be an easy explanation. But if you are able to help me, please speak english. The minute I see a bunch of terminal commands or linux techno-babble, I fall off my chair and start dibbling uncontrollably on the carpet. Costing me a fortune in carpet cleaning spray.

Ok avast! recent found a virus on my computer and made me do a boot scan and found I think 2 or 3 it had to remove. If anyone knows where the avast boot scan log file goes, I will post it back in this topic. Now after all that, everything seems to be running fine now but does not have the Avast protection running in the system tray anymore. I know it has something to do with the ashDip.exe file, which isnt starting when I click on it. I have gone into add/remove programes and clicked repair avast! and it didnt do anything. I am running Avast home edition, spybot S&D, and spyware blaster on my computer. Also with the virus that I had, there was maleware showing up before that and I think I removed it with spybot but I think it turned or led to a virus.

Would it be unwise to run the free versions of both Avast anti-virus and Malwarebytes simultaneously? Would they possibly, if not probably, conflict?

Answer:Solved: Running Avast and Malwarebytes simultaneously.

No
As the free version of malwarebytes provides no real time protection and is only a scan on demand

My advice would be depending on the nature of your browsing and the security awareness approach you adopt or NOT as the case maybe, to allow Avast to provide the real time protection and do a quick scan with malwarebytes on a weekly or twice weekly basis

A quick scan, checks some 99% of the file structure - all locations where an infection trace is normally found. A full scan is generally not required
A full scan also checks ALL the file structure, including, the data in restore points and if that is changed, the restore point will very likely not work.
https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=48541

However if it was to contain traces of infection you really would not want to restore to it in any case

That is why a system backup and image is essential, made at a time when all evidence points to the system being healthy.

Finally, if anything is found, other than that which you identify as what may be generally referred to as adware and spyware, I would advise that you have the system checked by one of our experts in the Malware forum.

Security software outfit Avast are trying to figure out why the combination of recent Windows patches and updates to the latter company's software are breaking PCs.

Hordes of users have found that their PCs, especially those running Windows 8 and 8.1, grind to a halt after they apply both Microsoft's recent KB3000850 update rollupand Avast's latest automatic updates.

Some users report their PCs won't boot, or take forever to apply patches. The Avast forums record many users venting their spleens. Microsoft's not immune either: a Redmond thread titled Major issues with KB3000850 includes plenty of people wondering why the company issued an update incompatible with third-party software.

That criticism may not be entirely fair, as an Avast staffer has posted the following explanation for the mess:

?We have been able to simulate the problem in our lab and I think we fixed this issue. This Windows updates calls new memory related functions which are not fully compatible with Avast.?
The poster, by the name of ?pk?, promised an update to remedy the situation and later reported that the patch was issued last Friday.

A few forum members seem, however, to be having trouble even with the automated patch, reporting a variety of glitches including very slow downloads of the KB3000850 update on machines running Avast.

Whatever the cause, a fair few people are rather upset with both Avast and Microsoft, with the latter company most often felt to be in... Read more

Hello everyone... sorry to bother you, but I am having technical difficulties

I know this is a normal wmi process, what bugs me is that I have not downloaded or installed anything new, and it showed up by itself, for no reason.

I end tasked it, and ran RKill, which showed no viruses... then ran Roguekiller and it showed 6 PUM.dns

Just installed Avast and tried my first scan. But the scan froze several times and always at the start of C:\System Volume Information. I have removed the Tracking Log file from System Volume Information whilst in Safe Mode as that used to cause AVG to freeze also. I also seem unable to run Avast in safe mode. So questions are:How to work around freezing problem? How to operate Avast scanner in Safe Mode?PC details are: Dell 5100, Win XP SP2, Avast v. 4.8.1169, VPS v. 0805 18-0, Pentium 4 800 MHz, 512 RAM, ADSL connection, no messages appear at the freeze point.Any ideas?

Answer:Avast - Freezing and not running in Safe Mode

1) Have you fully removed any prior anti virus software ?2) Have you tried a boot scan ? To do this open avast then go Menu / Schedule boot time scan, select the drives you need to scan then schedule & reboot.

I installed Avast free AV should I have my Windows XP firewall and AV running as well?

Answer:avast and XP anti virus running at same time?

You should only have 1 (one) AV and 1 (one) firewall running at the same time.

I don't know Avast (free), but according to http://majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html it does not contain a firewall.

So leave your Windows firewall running, but remove any other AV software.

I downloaded an installer for a program i want to use (i know i know). as soon as it finished downloading my anti virus popped up saying virus detected with a box to perform an action, so i hit move to chest and a box popped up saying "cannot process "D:\DOWNNLOADS\reaper3.01.rar\reaper3.01install.exe\$PLUGINSDIR\3xl-pwn.exe\%PLUGINSDIR\3xl-pwn.exe""

so i go to try and delete the rar and a box pops up saying "this action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program".

I've run another virus scan on the rar and it popped up saying infection found, this time it let me move the infected file to the vault, but i still cannot delete the rar as it says the file is open in another program.

I believe this "3xl-pwn.exe" has hopped out and hidden itself somewhere on the computer. I'm running 2 virus checks right now and its found an infection in the rar still, same name and directory as before. but i've moved it to the vault, plus when i run a scan on the rar itself it comes up as clean.... bit confusing.

I've had a search through the computer (search function) and it can't find an exe called 3xl-pwn.exe, plus I've had a look at the processed running and there arn't any unusual ones. So is it dormant? i presume not as its 'running in another program" as mentioned.

i need some serious help on this, if my girl finds out i've gotten a virus on her... Read more

My computer has an alert message in the bottom of the screen saying I do not have my antivirus turned on, but Avast is running fine. I also had my webcam turn on it's own as well. I have Avast/Malwarebytes on my computer and did a scan of each and cleared objects in both a few days ago. The webcam has since not turned on again but the noantivirus popup is still present and I'd also like to be sure whatever was turning the webcam on is also fixed entirely. Thank.

I am tuning my brother's computer. He is running Vista Service Pack 2, on a Notebook, and I don't know when he installed Service Pack 2 .

He said it was going bonkers, and he could only get it to boot into safe mode, and Norton was going bonkers. He decided Norton was at fault and uninstalled it.

I have been working on it all day; I cleaned off the hard drive, defragged it, ran antivirus and antimalware scans, didn't find a whole lot and no viruses; really didn't run into significant problems with this machine until now.

I installed and ran Avast. The computer suddenly crashed in the middle. It says that variously 27 and 4 registry handles leaked form \Registry\User\S-1-5-21-1400395204-12041-0-63-305893044-1000 and ditto, 1000_Classes, because Avast opened the keys, and that Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

What has caused this, what does it mean, and what do I do about it?

Is failure to restart the system after deleting things or installing antivirus programs by any chance responsible? I also installed Malwarebytes, and no other antivirus software was running at the time. Avast had dowloaded Dropbox without asking me and I was trying unsuccessfully to stop the blasted th...
