Preferred Solution: avg 9 resident shield & e mail scanner

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: avg 9 resident shield & e mail scanner

Have you tried running another update.[but then e-mail scanner started showing its not active but all components are checked]Maybe if you have scan outgoing mail ticked.Untick it.have you changed any of the settings since you downloaded it.

In the top left corner of the message their is an icon that looks like the AVG icon, but this message pops up even when running a scan. My AVG log says it has not detected any viruses, malware, etc. I am attaching the log files. any help you can give me in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated. Hi everyone!

I have a question I hope someone can help answer....

I recently downloaded AVG (formerly Ewido anti-spyware) and I am unable to activate the Resident Shield. I have tried checking the box in the task bar, it won't check, I have gone to where it says inactive to activate it, no luck there either??? I am using the free trial version right now so I am unable to contact AVG due to not having a license # to input on the support form. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how was it corrected? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank so much!

Answer:Resident Shield on AVG

From what I understand this is a known bug and should be fixed in the next release. I spoke to a technical rep. and was informed if the application was purchased and a valid key was installed it would work with no problems.

Also, be sure you have the latest version, download below.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5.0.50

How do I stop AVG Resident Shield cookie tracker window from popping up every few minutes?

Answer:AVG Resident Shield

Simple. Open AVG User Interface, click on tools, advanced, look until you see resident shield(about halfway down), click on it, and clear the "Scan for Tracking Cookies" checkbox, hit ok, allow changes. Cookies will now be dealt with without the popups. You may need to clean them manually, though.

Hi.Started an A Squared scan before going for dinner.Came back expecting it to be finished,Tried Taskmanager to see if anything else was slowing it down.and AVG resident shield [avgrsx.exe] was using up to 80% of the CPU.I Went into AVG and disabled it and that stopped the problem in TaskManager. Now I already have the link scanner disabled because of a conflict with McAfee Site Advisor. Not much left to disable,Anyone else having problems with the Resident shield. Its a pity they did not just do an Anti-Virus upgrade.it might have saved a lot of problems.Ive used it for about 3-4 years now and never had any problems.I have got to the stage now where it is Will I remove it or not.

Answer:AVG resident Shield using 80% of the CPU

I presume you're using version 8? I tried it & had several probs so went back to 7.5 & I'll keep that until 8 gets a bit older & mature- like me!

Normally you can only use the resident shield for a month then you have to pay for it.Thats the way it used to work on their Spyware program.Mind you I have not used it for a few years.

When I run Ad-aware SE I get a message from AVG Resident Shield notifying me of a virus located at C:\Docume~1\etc.There are five varients of Java/Byte Verify identified. It advises running AVG to remove these however when I scan no Virus is detected. I have also tried running both scans with System Restore disabled but with same results, AVG scan does not pick anything up while Ad-aware triggers the AVG Resident Shield noting the presence of the virus.Any suggestions?

Okay so I have what I believe to be a virus claiming Resident Shield Alert. The main reason I know it's fake is because it reports I have a Trojan and the file location for the Trojan is always one of my Anti Virus programs.. (eg. Spybot is a Trojan!..)How can I remove this? I've tried using SpyBot, Avast, Malwarebytes, AVG They don't seem to pick up this one. When I run the virus searches the 'Resident Shield Alert" pops up right when I believe the virus programs are actually scanning said virus. But they all end up finishing with no threats.I cant even get into my computer..to do a manual remove

Hi,
I am sending this from my laptop because it is my PC that is infected by this Resident Shield Alert.
I have tried various antispayware programmes and antivirus programmes to get rid of this virus, all to no avail!
The resident shield alert tells me that I have a Trojan Horse Downloader.VB.7.Y and the infected file is C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\winupd
Furthermore, after re-booting my desktop now has a white background with "Active Desktop Recovery" superimposed on it. Clicking on 'restore my active desktop' does nothing so I assume it is all part of the virus.
Please can you help me remove this virus.
Many thanks in anticipation

Good evening. Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix * When prompted to save Combofix, change the filename BEFORE saving it - any name will do, as long as it has .exe at the end. Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start. When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste Let me know how the PC is behaving.* There are two points to note from the instructions page:1) The Recovery Console. It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console, so you are free to choose whether you want to complete this step, but it is in your interests to do so.2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for!

I recently download the new Spybot 1.3 rc 4. I am running the Resident Shield. I guess it is not like SpywareBlaster which doesn't have to be in the system tray to be running.

What I am asking is does it (RS) have to be in the system tray to be active?

Answer:Spybot Resident Shield

If you are referring to the RS which prevents most spyware programs that lurk on websites (BlueMountain on www.bluemountain.com, Advertising, Inc. on www.msn.com and www.hotmail.com, etc.) then no, Spybot S&D does not have to be running, but you have to have the Resident Shield option activated. I believe that it is not activated by default.

I've upgraded my SS&D to the final-product version of 1.3, and it's been a while since I had RC4, so it may or may not have the TeaTimer RS which alerts you when your registry changes. For TeaTimer, it does need to be running to work, but I don't like TeaTimer and how much memory it needs to run, so I don't really recommend having it running.

Hope this helps.

I have AVG Free 7 on my comp (xp hom sp2) runs perfectly.
I did have AVG free 6 on my other win98se comp - ran fine. i upgraded it to avg free 7, but notice that the resident shield doesnt load at start up. after playing around i have figured out that the email scanner isnt activated each time it loads. so i activate it, restart but its deactivated again. i reinstalled it with the latest build from avgs website, but still no luck. My ad-watch monitoring detects a registry change so i know something is happening... after i activate it again the resident shield runs its icon in the task bar as it should be... why does the email scanner keep shutting down and then stop resident shield running? thanx

HelloAfter reinstalling win xp, the only software I loaded was security ie AVG, AVG anti-apy, spywareblaster, spybot and ccleaner. I visited windows update and downloaded what it told me. Problem I have is that AVG keeps telling me that the resident shield is not loaded, and also avg antispy keeps losing its update, as well as windows update losing its update (ie it keeps saying I have an update to install and then to restart the pc, but it is always the same update.) Does that make sense to anyone?? I followed Gandalfs advice from another thread ;"Download and save AVG to your computer. Disconnect from the net, shut computer down and restart in safe mode by tapping the f8 key on boot. Remove AVG using add/remove programmes. Then use Ccleaner click here to get rid of any remaining rubbish and reboot. Run new file from AVG, connect to net and update."But to no avail. I have also tried repair option from the cd, and also the scannow function.I am stuck, please help anyone?

I have also noticed that the clock in the task bar keeps losing the correct time, do you think its my cmos gone? If so how/ where do I find which one I need (battery) and where to get a new one? (maybe I should start another thread for this?)

Usually the resident shield is fine and hardly ever uses any CPU but this past week, on and off it has been using over 50% of it, and now it's starting to cripple me from doing things I can normally do. Any explanations as to why it would just suddenly want all this CPU space?

Answer:AVG 8.5 Resident Shield Using up 50%+ of CPU usage

Ok, so I found out the reason to this problem. Recently, I downloaded an update for my main anti-spyware which is now "Webroot Anti-virus with Anti-spyware" And apparently Webroot and AVGs resident shields are clashing with each other, if I shutdown Webroot, my CPU goes back to normal, however with Webroot on, AVG and Webroot start overusing CPU space for some reason. So my question is, should I uninstall Webroot, and if so, should I just keep AVG as a solo program or find another program to go with AVG?

Hey guys,

I recently bought Ewido Anti-Spyware v4.0.0.172 plus; it comes with premium support/updates and I think its one of the best antimalware programs out there (currently use it instead of windows defender)... Other antispyware programs I have installed that run next to Ewido, are Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE; and with AVG Free Antivirus and ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall as well.

However, I've noticed that every so often Ewido's Resident Shield turns off automatically; I suspect it does this after every update, but I really dont know for sure. Wondering if the same thing has happened to any of you guys, if its a bug with the program or whether you cant run AVG and Ewido at the same time.

Anyways, thanks for your time and trying to help me out. Later, geeks!

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.

AVG8 and I have the resident shield switched off.But when you go into Components.Resident shield. It tells you resident shield is turned off.But underneath it tells you that the resident shield is running since I switched my computer on.So far over 1 hour and 15 minutes.Anybody have any views on what to do.Not that worried about it.Probably an error of some sort.

Answer:Resident Shield still running in AVG

Ok.Decided to turn Resident Shield back on.Does not look as though there is any problem with the CPU so will leave it on and see if it runs Ok.

Actually, I have a twofold problem that I think is related. Several times a day I get an AVG Resident Shield warning that says, "Warning Found tracking cookie.2o7" or with other extensions such as .247realmedia, .Revsci, .Realmedia, .Serving-sys, .Tribalfusion, .Questionmarket or .Overture. The "Path to file" is always the same, C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\4m2lsrtw.default\cookies.sqlite. This started after I had the computer cleaned of a virus not too far back. The second part of my problem is that sites that I have to log on to are not always retaining my information even when I have "remember me" checked. The baffling part is that it happens intermittently, sometimes I have to log in two or 3 times in a row and then the same site might "remember me" the next few times I go to it. Is there some setting that needs to be changed or do I have another problem? For what it's worth, the computer is running fine and my daily AVG scan finds no infections. However, those cookie warnings do end up in the virus vault. Spybot tells me I have no threats, too.

Thanks again,

Tom

Answer:AVG resident shield warnings

Cookies are text string messages given to a Web browser by a Web server. Whenever you visit a web page or navigate different pages with your browser, the web site generates a unique ID number which your browser stores in a text (cookie) file that is sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from that server. Cookies allow third-party providers such as ad serving networks, spyware or adware providers to track personal information. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and prepare customized Web pages for them.Persistent cookies have expiration dates set by the Web server when it passes the cookie and are stored on a user's hard drive until they expire or are deleted. These types of cookies are used to store information between visits to a site and collect identifying information about the user such as surfing behavior or preferences for a specific web site.Session (transient) cookies are not saved to the hard drive, do not collect any information and have no set expiration date. They are used to temporarily hold information in the form of a session identification stored in memory as you browse web pages. These types of cookies are cached only while a user is visiting the Web server issuing the session cookie and are deleted from the cache when the user closes the session. The type of persistent cookie that is a cause for some concern are "tracking cookies" because they can be considered a privacy risk. I fixed registry errors and erased temporary files with CCleaner.
I scanned with Chkdsk.
I defragmented my hard drive.
I used Dial-a-Fix to repair permissions since I have other protection software as well.
If I uninstall reinstall I get this error:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: starting service....
Error 0x8007007f

I did all that because that's what I was told in the AVG forum.

Hello,

I'm trying to scan and fix someone else's computer. I'm running a full malwarebytes scan right now and it already says that 11 files are infected. During the scan, a popup came up that says Resident Shield Alert Accessed Accessed file is infected, etc... A quick google search indicates that this is fake and a sign of infection. (I think this popup had come up earlier, hence my being asked to look at the computer.) Apparently this started when the person connected a flash drive.
I thought I would go ahead and post on this site while waiting for the scan to finish. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

After trying several freeware antivirus (I need to stay a short while in that status) I choosed AVG 7.5, for it's lightness for my current PC (I do not know if at the cost of a mediocre protection). I just installed it again from the same "exe" that I already had used before succesfully. Well, every other starting, the famous resident shield doesn't get installed and I have to restart. Isn't any other way to avoid this inconvenient? Many thanks. Greetings

Ignored a problem I started getting last nite (I was tired). Wife clicked it today, PC no longer boots, even thru safe mode. The first thing I remember seeing was something that looked like it was part of my free AVG program, I think it was entitled "resident shield". It kept listing problems, all the same one, I think it was trojan_J...... can't remember the whole file name. I'm typing this from a laptop, it's the desktop that's got the issue. The machine OS is Windows XP, service pack two I believe.I recall back in the day we had boot discs, I would try one but I'm not even sure how to make one these days. Should I go start looking for my Windows disc now?Any help would be greatly appreciated!BTW, got that malware from pdga.com , a disc (frisbee) golf website. These virus's/trojans/whatever are everywhere anymore.Well, after 40 plus hits, doubt I'll be able to do it thru here, but I'll continue to check back a few times during the next 24 hrs. I'll prolly take it in in the next day or so, and if it's not a hardware issue, maybe just have it formatted and start over, there's nothing major on there. One more item to add, I saw a post about a browser being misdirected.....Yahoo is main home page (I use Mozilla primarily too) and my searches there lately have been taking me not to the desired link but to another search engine. Same thing tho on other search portals like Google. I can get to it tho if I click... Read more

Hold the power button down... does that turn it off? Now wait a moment and turn it back on, success in logging on at least?

If holding the power button down does not help then you will have to turn off the plug at the wall, and wait, and try turning it back on.

If normal mode is proving problematic for you, you will have to use safe mode.

Either way you will need to follow these steps once you are able to:

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Since yesterday evening my Eee PC (Windows XP) has had popups calling themselves "Resident Shield Alert" and telling me I have infected files, trojans and all sorts of things. However from what I can find online, the villain of the piece is actually the program making the popups, rather than what they're purporting to have found. If I ignore it or if I click it, it performs a fake scan and displays its results. Screen print available if needed, but I have a feeling that you guys have probably seen this one a thousand times.

Additionally I've noticed this morning that random words in websites texts are being double-underlined and turned into links, hovering over them with my mouse opens tiny advert windows that may or may not even be connected to the highlighted word. Obviously, I haven't clicked any of these words because I'm not a complete fool, I'm only fool enough to get myself into this situation, lol.

I've run Trendmicro's Housecall and Spybot - S&D, but neither of them found anything. While searching online I found a manual removal involving the copy/pasting of the atapi driver, but that action seemed to prove fruitless too.

Also, it would appear that on Start Up my Windows Firewall is being disabled, although I don't know if that's being caused by whatever is infecting my system or the AVG 9.0.725 with a firewall that is also enabled.

I apologise if this post is lacking a great deal of detail, I really have tried to... Read more

Since I started using AVG Free anti-virus v.8, my PC started to slow CONSIDERABLY....especially when I put my mouse cursor on the "Start" button...After a few hours of PC use,it would take minutes for the program list to populate !! This is most marked in branching menus...I have this empty gray rectangle totally paralyzing the PC till it fills..!!

I tried defrag,added RAM,stopped Win Defender,stopped my Mc Afee Firewall...no effect..

The Task manager always shows the criminal process: AVGrsx.exe consuming 98% of CPU for ages !!!

Whenever I deactivate this cursed process,my PC becomes "Superfast"...
Is there a solution without compromising protection??

Hello,Any help would be appreciated on the following two issues.1. Yesterday I caught a virus called "XP Anti Spyware 2010". I have removed this using SpyBot and MalwareBytes. Could you advise if it would be definitely removed? I believe it is but I don't want to use internet banking until I'm 100% sure.2. Today I got another virus which is calling itself "Resident Shield Alert". It looks like a AVG pop up (please note I do not have the whole virus which looks similar to AVG, what I have is only a pop up window). The window pops up and reports I have a trojan or virus or cookie of some sort but the file name of the infection is always just one of my anti virus programs. It usually only opens when I open a virus scanner but other times it doesn't. I have tried turning off the Shield Alert in AVG but then Windows security centre tells me I have no virus protection when I have several others.. ?I have scanned my computer many times in both normal and Safe Mode using the follow free programs : Spybot, AVG, MalwareBytes and Advanced System Care. All programs show no infections after completion except ASC which only picks up a couple of cookies. I'm not sure what to do next. Please help with any advice and could you let me know how dangerous it is (again, for banking reasons - I'm becoming neurotic). I'm using Windows XP (2003 I think) on a Compaq laptop - again let know if any more specifics are required ASAP. Also I can provide a screen... Read more

Answer:Virus - Resident Shield Alert - Please help.

Ok. Let's address these one at a time. 1. Xp Antispyware 2010. Can you please post the results of your Malwarebytes log so we can be certain it has been fully removed from your computer.2. The Resident Shield Alert that you are receiving is your AVG Antivirus doing exactly what it is supposed to. Anytime it finds a suspicious file ( virus, spyware, malware, etc. ) it is supposed to pop like that and ask you what you would like to do with it. If you look at the process names in the lower potion of your screen caps, you will see that in the first one you were scanning with Spybot S&D. In the second screen cap you were running Ad-Aware. As each of these programs inspected your files, AVG is also scanning the same file at the same time. Hence the reason the scans take some time. Once you post your Malwarebytes log, we may have you run a few other scans to be sure things are clean and safe.

So, I got infected with some nasty spyware/malware/trojans. I ran through the guide of using Rkill & MalwareBytes Anti-Malware program and it caught some things (see attachment). I later ran it again and it didn't seem to catch anything (again, see attachment for the log), so I thought everything was fine. However, this morning I started getting "Resident Shield alert" messages from AVG telling me I have a couple trojans on my computer. Hi just wondering if it was Ok to run both A Squared Background Guard and AVG Resident Shield at the same time.As both do the same sort of job would it be advisable to turn one of them of and if so what one.It is slowing down my computer a lot as both are using up a lot of the CPU every time I open a new page,Also Kerio Firewall is doing the same so I have the 3 of them using up between 40% and 100% of the CPU every time a new page is opened.I know that they are only doing the job that they were meant to do.I have recently upgraded the Memory from 512Mg to 2 Gb.It is a little faster opening pages but not as fast as it used to be years ago.Using A Squared paid for version.Only 4 start up programs in msconfig and have no music or video's downloaded.wondering a bit here. The question is keep both or turn one off.

Answer:Background Guard vs Resident Shield

Don't know about A2 and Kerio Firewall but AVG's Resident Shield I found was really slowing everything down.Opening folders in My Documents took an age as AV scanned. Switching it off, certainly when working offline, worked wonders. This was one of the reasons why I changed to Avast AV, much less instrusive and does not hog resources.

Hi,
I opened an email apparently from FED EX, saying it was having problems delivering a parcel. As soon as I opened it, my AVG resident shield started going crazy, telling me I had a virus in win 32 patched, it says the object is white listed.

I have since scanned the computer with AVG and found 2 viruses which were successfully deleted. My computer seems ( at present) to be fine, however the resident shield hasn't stopped, it's as if I have hundreds of viruses.

I am not very computer literate so I'm desperate for help.

Kind Regards

Hi, hoping you can help.

I recently got several "fake" dialogs popping up with the title of "Resident Shield Alert". I see this alert is linked to the "Virus Scanner" virus/trojan although the screen shots of that virus did not match what I was seeing. Anyway, the popups stated I had some viruses and, of course, wants me to use "Resident Shield" to clean them. I recognized it as a trojan so I left them alone and immediately ran Malwarebytes. I noticed that although I could run Malwarebytes, it would not let me update it to the latest version. I could also not open Task Manager. I got "Your administrator has disabled this functionality".

Malwarebytes finished and said it cleaned some entries (sorry, I don't remember what they were) and had me reboot. Upon rebooting, still could not access Task Manager and a Resident Shield Alert popped up again.

I rebooted to Safe Mode and ran Malwarebytes in Administrator mode. Again, said it cleaned up the machine. I noted a "hijack.taskmanager" in the list. It said it cleaned them and to reboot. This time, when I rebooted and ran Malwarebytes again, it found no problems. However, a dialog appeared that said it could not find "fcadlot.dll". Just to be sure, I ran Microsoft Live Scanner. It found 10 items but could not remove them.

Thus, I unplugged the network cable to prevent any (more) data from being sent out and came here. I ran the DDS too... Read more

Answer:avg free problem with resident shield

Hi and welcome

This may or may not be malware related...but I see that you have been refrerred here from the software section, so to rule out malware we would require you to follow thru the below then post back with the requested logs:

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

Hello all,

After that I have been getting resident shield pop-ups which tell me about a new file being created in TEMP directory

My OS is Vista Home Basic

I've scanned my system again and again using AVG but it came out clean. Somehow it detects the infection when it executes but when I scan the system nothing happens.
I've run Spyware Doctor, Spybot, registry cleaners etc. It didnt help at all. No software detected any infection

Please help!!!!

Answer:SVCHOST.EXE AVG resident shield alert

Hello Mugambodeva, It seems strange that none of your scanners are picking it up but your resident protection is
Unless it is your heuristics scan (in other words it is not a known definition, but displaying the behaviour one.)

To be on the safe side i would download Malwarebytes free scanner, update it & run a scan. Malwarebytes has a high detection rate of Polymorphic malware & will play nicely with the security apps you already have.

If it does detect anything can you please post back your results. (For my own curiositys sake as well as it may help others)

Best wishes

Answer:Resident Shield Alert(fake avg??)

All scanning tools are susceptible to glitches, bugs and false positive detections from time to time, especially if the scanner uses heuristic analysis technology. Heuristics is the ability of a scanning program to detect possible new variants of malware before the vendor can get samples and update the program's definitions for detection. Heuristics uses non-specific detection methods to find new or unknown malware which allows the anti-virus to detect and stop if before doing any harm to your system. The disadvantage to using heuristics is that it is not as reliable as signature-based detection (blacklisting) and can potentially increase the chances that a non-malicious program is flagged as suspicious or infected. If that is the case, then you can restore the file and add it to the exclusion or ignore list. Anytime you suspect a detection to be a False positive, get a second opinion by submitting the file to jotti's virusscan or virustotal.com.In the "File to upload & scan" box, browse to the location of the suspicious file and submit [upload] it for scanning/analysis.If it is a false positive, then you should contact and advise the vendor that their program is being detected as a threat. In many cases they will work with the anti-virus techs in an attempt to resolve the detection. Most anti-virus vendors have instructions for file submissions posted on their web sites. Once a file is received, a technician can examine it in more detail and provide a r... Read more

WinXP Home SP2. I installed AVG on this PC yesterday and it installed just fine, no errors, no pop-ups, no weirdness, nothing. This morning, I power up the PC and see the AVG icon in the system tray has ye olde red exclamation point. Assuming it was an update issue, I manually started the update process which finished w/o incident, no errors, no pop-ups, no weirdness, but the "!" persists. So I poke around.... the attached screen shot says it all... I'm going to uninstall and re-install, but in the meantime, if anyone has any input or thoughts, feel free to share. :-D

Answer:AVG8 - problem with Resident Shield

No driver for the resident shield? :-D Probably was DUI and was arrested. :-D

Yeah, good thing to remove and re-install AVG.

Had recently some issues with AVG. I removed it and re-installed AVG. It installed without a hitch but when I opened AVG, there were NO COMPONENTS INSTALLED .... as in the whole darn AVG box was EMPTY!! Removed and re-installed yet again. *sigh* All together had to remove and re-install about 4x in the last few weeks!

I have tried everything I know to get these Resident Shield alert pop-ups to stop appearing. From the research I've done, this pop up could very well be a rogue program, but my laptop is in fact infected!
I have ran Malwarebytes', AVG 8.5, Window's Defender, Superantispyware....and still, pop-ups. I've ran them in Safe Mode with Networking and in regular mode multiple times each. Now, I can run a quick Malwarebytes' scan, I'll get at least 10 infections that I remove, and 10 mins later, I run it again and the same thing happens!!

Someone downloaded AVG (the free version) on my desktop. I just upgraded to a quad core and am not getting tons of pop-ups. The resident shield alert says multiple threat detection. The first one is moved to virus protection and the 2nd one says infected, but when I press "Remove selected infections," or "Remove all unhealed infections," it says, "Some files cannot be healed." I tried to install pop-up popper (Bayden), but that is not working either.

Any ideas?

I have a Toshiba laptop with XP Home.

A window keeps popping up that says Antivir Resident Shield on top and claims a virus was detected. It has a shield that looks somewhat like Windows in 4 color.

Several pop ups keep occurring over and over and this results in the rest of the screen being shaded so I cannot do anything.

Even if I manage to get the AVG scan begun, it fails. I cannot get on the internet.

It keeps adding red shields with an X in the center on the task bar.

One says Warning Active virus detected, another says application cannot be executed. The file ...... is infected. (These keep changing.)
And then asks Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?
I tried to run C Cleaner, my AVG program, and a spyware program, but it cuts them all off.

Can anyone tell me how I can get at this to remove it? Thank you.

I have a nasty virus that we cannot remove. I have been told this might be a "flower" that is deep in the computer, we do a temporary fix, and then it shows itself again.

When I start the computer I get a pop-up that says "Resident Shield Alert". It then says "Multiple threat detection". It wants me to try removing two files called "Trojan Horse Dropper.generic2".

When I run a scan with our Malware program, it doesn't find anything. But this happens every time that I start the computer.

It also won't let me shut down unless I push the power button.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I guess now that just about every virus or trojan detected by AVG is a generic something or other. Before I get to the point, here's a little history:

Aug 27, 2008: Resident shield detects Trojan Horse Downloader.ZLOB.AAXQ. File name is Dc3.exe, and another Dc4.exe. Resident shield found them in the C:\RECYLCER... portion of the HDD. Moved to virus vault.

Oct 2, 2008: Resident shield detects Trojan Horse Downloader.ZLOB.ABBY. File name is Dc3.exe. Again, in C:\RECYLCER..

July 27, 2009: Resident shield detects Trojan Horse Generic14 AWH. File name is Dc13.exe, once again, in C:\RECYCLER.

In all 3 cases, after moving the so-called files (which never existed anywhere else besides AVG's interface) to the vault, immediately or soon thereafter, I get the same alert from AVG, only the "file" is located in the system volume information, system restore portion of the HDD. The only way to stop the alert has been to delete ALL restore points.

These are the only virus alerts I have had since 1994, and the file doesn't exist, never did, and they are all in locked portions of the HDD that cannot be scanned using a regular full system scan. It's funny that I get 3 similar virus alerts by AVG when It took from 1994 to 2009 for me to collect 3 virus alerts from any program, and those 3 were from files I had just downloaded or was in the process of downloading.

How can AVG be detecting trojan horses, or viruses in the recycler or system restore points when t... Read more

Okay. I originally had Windows Defender and I added Avast because Vista only has the spyware protection. Then, I got AVG Spyware free because I don't like Defender.

I also grabbed AVG free AV.

Now, all 3 of these programs (AVG AV, AVG AS, and Avast AV) all have realtime scanners. Right now I have only Avast realtime on because of the known collision issues with all AV programs.

My question is, which is the best to be running? I have avast on because that's the one i thought was the best. Is AVG AV or AVG AS better to have on?

If AVG is better than avast (realtime scanners) is it ok to have the AS and AV realtime protections on?

thanks for any and all help.

Thus, you need to look for detailed information about how the tests were conducted, the procedures used, and data results. Hi,
AVG paid version Resident Shield running on our son's Vista Home machine produced two alerts: TrojanDownloader.Generic9.CKV and .CLH.
The CKV is associated with C:\Windows\msa.exe and the CLH is associated with C:\Users\Dixie\AppData\Local\Temp\b.exe.
We disconnected the machine from the internet and have not done anything yet. Options on Resident Shield are" Remove Selected Infections, Remove All Unhealed Infections or Close.
There are about 30 of these showing up in the Alert window. One says "moved to the vault", all others say "infected".
So I don't waste anyone's time here, I sent an email support question to AVG, but it's the weekend, so I'm posting this to see if it's a quick fix for us. It sounds like AVG won't be getting back to us until Monday.
Please advise to wait for AVG or try and fix ourselves.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Solved: AVG Resident Shield Next Move Question

I dont see your question....

But heres your options:

1. remove them if you can,
2. move them to the virus vault.
3. Leave them (not Recommended)

I recomend you Install Malware Bytes
Do a full scan then report back.

Hello! I have run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on this machine and it removed some of the infections. However, I am still getting an intermittent pop up that says Resident Shield Alert and warns of a Trojan (different each time) that is infecting my PC and needs to be removed.

I have included here the DDS and Root Repeal logs as recommended. I also have attached last Malwarebytes scan log and a Hijack This log for quick reference.

Thanks!!!!

Answer:Resident Shield Alert window popups

Hello, I was hoping to have heard back from someone on this, but it's been a week now with nothing. I don't mean to rush the team, but I need to get this machine back up and running.

Please advise if I need to repost in a different format or remove some of the logs I've included.

Thanks!

Last week my daughter handed me her computer to fix because it was infected with XP Antivirus 2010. She was running no protection on her computer. After researching it on several forums, I ran rkill, Malwarebytes, Spybot, and AVG. She had numerous Trojan and virus infections. I can post the logs if it will help with this problem. After doing all this, the Resident Shield Alert popped up saying: Multiple Threats Detected. This file was listed 3 times. The first time it was moved to virus vault and the other 2 times it was listed as Object Inaccessible.System Volume Information\-restore{26F24966-6A27-4F45-A7FF-D8717C5ED1A6}\RP6|A000013.sys Virus Identified Win32/Patched.CG I don't know if this is a big problem or not, but with all the other problems she had, I hate to just let it go. The computer seems to be running fine, but I'm also not sure if I got all the other stuff. She had a Google search redirect that I got rid of with Hitman Pro. Spybot fixed the System Restore that was disabled and and reenabled the Windows Security along with finding other Malware. All these come back clean after running them now. Another problem she said was not there before the XP Antivirus infection was her touchpad was working poorly. After running all the stuff I did, it started working again but began to mess up again yesterday. I don't know if it is something in the software or a hardware issue that is just coincidental to thi... Read more

This morning I walked into my office with a multiple treat detection alert on my screen.

AVG 8.5 - Resident Shield Alert: PSW.Generic7.AYUB

Multiple threat detection:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe | Trojan horse PSW.Generic7.AYUB | Object is white-listed (critical/system file that should not be removed)

Obviously I chose not to remove considering it is a critical/system file. I chose to close the alert.

Screen shot of Original Alert HERE>> http://www.getfreedom.com/ALERTS/PSW.Generic.jpg

Ran Hijack-This (exe file Named different in Program files) Log is further down.

RELATED ISSUES:
Every time I try to open almost any program (Such as Mbam) the resident shield alert (Small version) pops up - Screen shot HERE>> http://www.getfreedom.com/ALERTS/PSW.Generic-SMALL.jpg

I ran an Mbam SCAN of C:\ only. MBAM found No Infections - Screen shot HERE>> http://www.getfreedom.com/ALERTS/PSW.Generic-MbamScan.jpg

Now the alert pops up periodically even if I'm not opening another program.

I patiently await your instructions,

Besides MBAM I also just ran an online BitDefender Scan and it came up with "No Infection Found".

Then ran Spybot Search and Destroy and "No Invection Found".

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe this is a false positive situation with AVG.

Hoping to hear something from someone soon on this.

Has anyone bothered to tweak the AVG Resident Shield by manually excluding files or directories that you know are "safe" and don't need to be scanned every time they are launched or accessed? Seems like this could improve performance and system responsiveness. For example, does AVG really need to worry about games that I've played a hundred times without incident? Or other application executables that are unlikely to be the source of an infection?

Of course the time it took me to type this is probably longer than the entire scanning time it would save over the life of the PC, but that's not the point...

Answer:Tweaking AVG Resident Shield by excluding files?

That is a judgement call. I have excluded one program from my MSE because MSE kept it from loading normally (took 3 minutes in lieu of a second to load it). But just for the fun of it, I would not exclude anything. As you said, at the end of the day it buys you nothing - especially if the scans run in the background.

Good morning,

I have a fakealert "Resident Shield Alert" virus that keeps popping up. I have run SAS, Malwarebytes, and Spybot in "standard" mode. It would not allow me to run Combofix in anything by "safe mode" and would not allow me to run MGTools in either mode, without another popup window stating that i didn't have the authortiy to run this, click ok. If I click ok, or the X to drop the window, it will repeat itself and eventually reboot the computer itself. I still have the REs. Shield fakealert popping up when I try to run Combo or MGTools in standard mode and running SAS, MB and Spybot only brings the same results (showing the same viruses infecting the computer as before they were run). Please advise.

If you cannot get into Safe Mode run this scan in Normal Mode. Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page. Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.alternate download linkNote: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current versionRead the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs. The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders). If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window. If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot b... Read more

have two questions
first its about J2Se run time Enviroment 5.o update 6, when I check for updates they tell me I have the last version, but in your HJT for infected forum they say the version should be update 8. so what should I do? dont even know what java is for.
Second question I have Ewido whith the resident shield as active, and allso in the forum they say it should be uncheked, so which is the best way of having Ewido running?
I would be very thankfull if somebody could give me a goog advise for my two questions
thankyou very much

Answer:Question About Java And Ewido's Resident Shield

The Java home page show the latest to be 6. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jspAbout Java... Java is a general purpose programming language with a number of features that make the language well suited for use on the World Wide Web. Small Java applications are called Java applets and can be downloaded from a Web server and run on your computer by a Java-compatible Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. (Thank you webopedia)I'm not sure what they are referring to when they suggest "to leave it unchecked", as I understand it the resident shield is already active upon installation.

Hi, using XP, AVG free edition 6, ZoneAlarm, and just installed Spybot. Was having this problem before Spybot though. When boot up, AVG's Resident Shield is disabled, so am having to manually correct this every time, trusting that I remember every time. Forgotten once or twice, and viruses in before realised. Don't know what settings/programmes could be knocking AVG skew whiff. Thanks, Cat

I had the VDB errors and the Resident Shield not active with 2011.The solution that worked on this machine:Don't bother with the tick/untick Resident Shield save changes game.Frist, click update now in the AVG user interface if you have the yellow exclamation point on the tray icon. Then Google search 'AVG 2011 Free Download' and get it from CNet.Run the software. Click REPAIR and proceed.Let it go until it is finished.DO NOT RESTART THE MACHINE.Give it five minutes or so and check the interface again. The resident shield will be active.

Answer:AVG 2011 Resident Shield Not Active **FIXED**

Had the same problem when upgraded to AVG 2011 0n XP, all fine but the FireWall wouldn't start, claimed NDIS driver was missing. Went to control panel, Add/remove Programs, and choose to run AVG 2011 Install/Repair. Took 5 minutes, and a reboot, but now working fine. Philip

Hello,

About a month or so ago, my computer froze (upon making a funny 'clicking' sound) and was completely useless until i restarted it. I noticed that I would sometimes have to restart it 4 or 5 times before I could get it to run. Sometimes it runs fine, however sometimes it will refreeze anything from a couple of seconds to 12 hours.

I checked my virus vault, running on AVG, and noticed that a couple of "Trojan horse download.Agent.GPZ" had been found, and i guess deleted. I've had several more in the last few months, including "Trojan horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot2.MLV", "Virus identified Java/OpenStream" and "Virus identified Woem/VB.AUG"

On the 17th of last month however, It deleted about 15 "Virus identified Exploit", and the problem of my computer freezing up all of the time became more and more frequent, to a point where I couldn't even open my internet browser before it froze.

I decided to run AVG (As i have it automatically to do everyday anyway), but in safemode. However, the "Resident Shield" and "E-mail Scanner" was disabled, and wouldn't allot me to turn them on as the option was blanked out.

Any help would be appreciated
