External HDD Caddy

Question: External HDD Caddy

Bought the above (on great advice from here I may add) after having difficulty accessing my HDDi, my laptop picks it p ok but tells me disk needs to be formatted, which is what I didn't want to do. The disk was formatted NTFS with XP Pro The original problem was a boot sector fault which I wasn't able to repair, hence the option of trying to access it as an external drive. would it have anyhing to do with the jumper pins? or do I resign myself that I have lost the data?

Preferred Solution: External HDD Caddy

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External HDD Caddy

changed jumper pins and now can see all my files

Hi
Windows XP, probably Home version, would not boot into either safe or normal modes. Used live media to check condition of the hdd and also removed a couple of Trojans again using a live bootable anti virus disk.

Since then opted to use the Recovery console and attempted to "fixboot c:" but oops now cant even use the recovery console. The issue is "c:\windows\system32\config\system" file corruption. Maybe it is simply a question of copying files to ****.old or .bak and recreating them but from which location?

Because the recovery console will now not work I removed the hdd and loaded it into an external caddy and can now see its BOOT BACKUP & RECOVERY partitions with all of the directories; although the backup partition is pretty much blank , and the recovery partition has stuff but nothing obvious to attempt

The question is what to do I do to try to make this hard drive bootable again

Any suggestions gratefully received. TIA

My daughter has an eldely Toshiba S2800-200 laptop.
It is broken where the power supply lead enters the machine and she has been quoted ?100 to have it repaired!
She has already bought a new computer so repair is not an option.

The Toshiba, however, contains some files (mainly photographs, music etc.) which she would like to keep, but getting the files out of the laptop and on to her new machine is a problem.

My thought is to buy a cheap USB caddy from somewhere like eBay, remove the hard drive and use the caddy to download the photos. etc. to her new machine via USB.

In order to buy the correct caddy I need to know the full spec. (diameter, capacity etc.) of the Toshiba's hard drive and I don't have a clue!

Can anyone here point me towards the spec. of the hard drive on a Toshiba S2800-200 please?

Answer:Satellite 2800-200 - What external caddy can I use for the HDD

I assume the Satellite 2800 series supports IDE HDD controller and therefore the HDD would be also an 2.5? IDE HDD.
Therefore you should look for an USB IDE HDD case?

My daughter has an external HDD in a USB caddy, for backups. The drive has become too small for her needs, so I'm going to fit larger capacity one. Her computer runs XP SP2 Home.I'm OK with the hardware side - fitting the drive into the caddy, setting the jumper to Master, and connecting it to the computer via a USB port. However, I'm not sure what will happen when the new drive is recognised. Will I encounter any confusion over the fact that it is replacing an old, smaller USB drive? If someone could just run me through the process of getting the drive recognised, formatting it (NTFS or FAT32?) and so on, I would be very grateful.

Answer:Renewing HDD in external caddy - any pitfalls?

If the basic operating system is XP (check NTFS) and format the new drive as that.No snags I can think of except file space. You will have to copy everything off the old drive to somewhere safe until the new drive is working and then copy everything back to that.If you have room on the PC's own HD you could temporarily make a folder called "old-ext" and copy into that, eventually deleting the folder on your PC to regain the space.

hi peeps

im looking for an external 2.5 HD caddy. I was looking for a Western Digital caddy, however, cannot find any on the net. Was wondering if somebody could point me in the correct direction to obtain one. Or a extact replica

thanks in advance

Answer:2.5 External Hard Drive Caddy

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

Recently my old Acer Aspire 1650 decided to die, and I now want to try and recover my data from the hard drive. Hello everyone, I'm new around here, just got the W530, my first laptop. I got myself an external caddy(RAIDON GR3650-B3) to be able to use the 5 HDD from my desktop (Windows 7 Quad xenon). First I tried with the smaller ones in the desktop through the USB 2 which at first didn't work, but after testing it in a MacBook(were it worked) everything suddenly worked in my desktop too perfectly. So I was ready to get out my 1TB WD black Caviar(exact copies of each other, and basic partitions booth) from the desktop and test them in the caddy plugged to the W530 through the USB 3. That's when the nightmare started. One of the drives will briefly work (less that 5 min) and after I will be able to see the files but not copy, read, or move them with a "the file is missing or not readable" message. And the other drive is completely gone (sometimes can be briefly spotted in the windows disk management as not initialized). At first I thought the partition table has become corrupted but I've tried Testdisk, Acronis disk director, WD data lifeguard and Diskpatch with no improvement in either drive. I've also tried different ports, rebuilding the index, different cables and different computers, with the only improvement being again in the MacBook, where the first drive appears to work normally. So I've tried to format the other one to transfer everything but I can't format it. In disk management when I'm able to see it it tells me "the device is not re... Read more

Hi I have a serious problem. I was buyed caddy to my cd / dvd rom bay. When I run any of my disk it get same error. When I add caddy in to my PC and no matter if it's OS disk or secondary disk they "works" about 5-15 minutes.  When I do nothing with disk, just let him connect without any I/O operations (here It's only my though, because Windows can run some hidden process, I don't know, but they are absolutely quiet), they can live in my OS for forever. BUTWhen I for example start copying music from disk on my PCI to this disk in caddy / extarnal disk it starts copy at full speed, but with every socond of transfer connection get slower.BUT 2.a) When it's OS disk in my caddy OS get slower too and finally gets BSOD after about 15 minutes . b) When it's just external disk the whole operation stuck, but If I kill explorer.exe OS handle it and not fell into BSOD.  My NTB is NOT compatible with WINDOWS 10.. I read about it on official Lenovo website. So it's very annoying unsolvetable problem. Every servis can say: It's just not compatible notebook.  So, do anybody same problem? MyNTB : Lenovo G500, Windows 10 homesome tags:EXTERNAL  / CADDY / SSD / HDD something like this get slow and stuck Thanks anybody who can help.Best regardspuspo

I have posted separately on the sudden death of my laptop. It seems that a fault in the mains adapter spiked the power supply and wrecked the motherboard.
The repair shop which confirmed the diagnosis has kindly removed the hard drive and put it into a "caddy" enclosure so that I can recover documents etc.
I'm wondering what else I can salvage. I could do with using the CD/DVD Read/Write drive, as our netbook doesn't have one. So I would like to extract the CD/DVD drive and put it into a case/caddy with a USB connection so that I can use it as an external DVD reader/writer.

is this possible? The DVD drive, though removable, has a slightly "shaped" front panel as it aligned with the laptop casing. I have browsed and googled and although there are lots of hard-drive enclosures, I am finding it hard to identify the right size/shape of "box" to house a DVD drive.
as well as the enclosure or box, presumably I need some sort of circuitry or adapter inside it with USB connections at one end and whatever other kind of connections the DVD drive itself needs? I confess I don't know the difference between IDE and SATA plugs and/or sockets....

Can anyone help me with the search for the right enclosure kit, and - even better - a pointer to some sort of tutorial about how to connect it all up and turn the internal laptop DVD unit into an external accessory?
Or is it all more trouble than it's worth? I just don't like throwing out parts that I feel could be (re)used.

Answer:External caddy or enclosure for salvaged DVD drive?

More costly & trouble than it's worth, an external dvd/rw is cheap to buy, memory might be salvagable but depends on how old / make/type it is, or maybe sell laptop complete for parts.

Can anyone tell me how much current is used by a SSD drive mounted in an external USB caddy? I am wondering if I can connect it to the USB input of a Humax HDR-1100S box.
I have tried to get the answer from Humax and from the Hummy support Forum with no success.

SSDs use 2 to 4 watts as opposed to 6 -7 watts used by a portable HDD (wich works fine in my Humax Fox T2 front or rear USB ports)
Therefor a SSD in a caddy should work fine.

Hi,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Thanks

Dear All,

This is my first ever post here. I bought a new Hitachi 300GB hard disc. I put that in a caddy and connect it via a USB port to my computer. I partitioned it into 200GB and 100GB. I tried to clone the C disc of my computer onto this new hard disc with Acronis True.

I tried to swap the new hard disc with the already installed one but it would not work. I swapped to the old one again and tried to use the disc managment. Now the clone does not appear and I also have lost the 200GB space. The disc management shows only a single partition of about 90GB. The two partitions are disappeared.

Spent almost the whole night. Please help to

Hi,

I have a Laptop running Win98 1st. Ed. It's on it's 2nd hard drive. The first was a IBM Travelstar (model# DKLA-24320). It was replaced when the Stone Monkey Virus made it impossible to access the dirve.

Now I am looking for what I think is called an external hard drive caddy or enclosure. I would like to place the old hard drive in the external caddy or enclosure. The caddy or enclosure would have to be either Parallel, USB or PCMICA adaptable. I am hoping to then be able to access the old hard drive that way.

Is there such a Caddy or enclosure, does it go by any other name? If there is such a device please tell me the proper name and where I can find them.

I'd also like to know whether, this sounds like a possible way to access an old laptop hard drive?

Thanks

Answer:laptop Hard Drive External Caddy or Enclosure

You can pick up USB external disk cases for peanuts for 2.5" disks. I use them for traveling storage. Here's one typical example: http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=HY-2.5case&dept_id=04-005

Note that you may need a cheap +5V adapter to use this case, you can buy them in the $20 range with the supply included. www.pricewatch.com is your friend.

But about 4-6 hours later I tried again and then it says it cannot load the driver software. IF this is any help as well there is a blue and red light on the caddy blue for power and red for hard disk activity the red light is always on it will not go off. I have tried lots of hard drives seagate, Maxtor, western digital and it still does the same. Please can you help. I hope it is not a hard drive problem. Also my punctuation is not very good I am sorry about that.David.

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

I checked the forum and it seems Lenovo still does not have a 12.7mm caddy for the W510 so I can add a second HD. Or is there any news? Also I see recommondations for the 'Chinese' caddies but it seems despite the fact that they are 12.7mm they might still be lose. Anyways, can somebody provide some experience with these. http://tinyurl.com/2dmlkwb - Link to the 'Chinese' caddies. Thanks

I've got one lying around somewhere... the CD drive caddy... in which you add an SSD and replace your CD drive.

Dumb question: what can I do with this?
Can I have another copy of the Windows?
Can I have Linux and multiple boots?

Thanks

Answer:SSD in caddy - what can I do?

Sure.
Just wondering why not install the ssd as an internal drive without the caddy?

Question: Caddy

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

I have been considering a HD caddy for use on the SATA interface of my Z70 and saw some for sale. But all don't have an OEM fit and require using the Optical drive face. I don't see a release for the DVD drive when I flipped the notebook over either like my ThinkPad has w/Ultrabay. I am not sure if its even supported properly by the bios and do want to be able to used the DVD drive as well. So its not a permanent solution I am looking for. Despite have ONE USB 3.0 port I still fine it quite slow moving data to 3.0 flash drives I have bought. SATA is sata and works without a fuss as fast as the drives can cache it and write. I miss ESATA port not on this notebook. It was a must have when I was looking for a notebook before and the T520 has it all but very poor screen and sound is horrible even for voice via Skype as a business system its bad and not solution for  it.

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

Answer:HDD in a caddy - am I missing something?

Yes, I'm afraid you are missing something.
The games would need to be installed from the original disk onto her PC in order to run. She wouldn't be able to run MS Word from the disk-in-a-caddy either. If there are documents on that drive, they'd be openable, but would use the software installed on the host machine.

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive? Thanks,

... would it work (USB 2.0 interface)? I know that for extra storage, a 300Gb disc seems good value - but I get the backup storage (on DVD RW discs) and a DVD copier too - alll in one portable package - but wd this setup of an external caddy containing an internal DVD RW actually work?

Answer:CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

CDROM caddies are not very common, but in principle I don't see why it shouldn't work. A USB2 enclosure is just a box with an IDE to USB2 adaptor. For a DVD burner, the caddy must be USB2 and your computer must support it as well (firewire would probably be slightly better). USB1 would be too slow to cope with the data transfer required for burning DVD.

Hello guys,I've got a problem with my caddy (second) HDD in my g6.Before few days i did fresh new installation on brand new ssd (kingston v300 if it does it matter) with windows 10 on it (while installing my second HDD it wasn't in laptop). All seems perfectly fine, works well and so on....after that i decided to put my caddy hdd back in place (instead CDROM of course) and after boot it wasn't there, was unrecognizable from BIOS and from Windows.I tried with few methods to detect it :Computer Manage > Disk Managementfrom disk part in windows promptfrom Device Manager and still the same,it still unseeable.I decide a problem comes from my caddy and change with a new one (this time was with switch ,first one wasn't with it) and still the same - invisible caddy hdd. After that put hdd back in a main socket, and formatted it,try again and...nothing,try and swtich theirs places and still same.Use last version for BIOS and all drivers looks uptodate.Thanks.Best Regards

Answer:can't see hdd in caddy on win7

I don't know what caused the disc to be seen as dynamic and or invalid but there seems to be a fix of changing it back to a Basic disk.

Now, you can't use disk management to do it because that method formats the disc destroying all data.

I see two methods for keeping data safe.

1) Using TestDisk http://mypkb.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/how-to-non-destructively-convert-dynamic-disks-to-basic-disks/

2) Using a Hex Editor http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=191006

If you use the hex editor method the trick will be finding the correct disk connected to your computer. It should show as a removable disk which should make it straight froward.

As far as I can tell either method will work. I've navigated both programs so if you have any questions--ask away.

Hello, I received my P70, and I was surprise to see that the dvd isn't hotswapable like it was with my T510.  I can unscrew a screw, and change my dvd my a ssd caddy but there is one available ? When I bought the laptop, I asked for one.  They accepted my request and send one for me, but I received a Dummy caddy, it's even marked on it, DUMMY    (it's used probably to put a blank when we remove the DVD). I think that the right part is 00NY314, but I'm not sure.  Still 50$ US for that, is't a lot, it will be around 75$ CAN.  I need to be sure before I order that part. Can someone confirm that ?  With a picture will be nice, not that I don't trust Lenovo, but I received a dummy part, so...

Answer:P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

While I can't speak directly to your question, It is clear that hot-swappability of this 4th drive is not a design feature of the P70.  It is a shame that the nod to manufacturing simplification (read: cost & maintenance requirements reduction) had eliminated a very useful feature. With my W700, I can and do swap-out the optical drive for an HDD often to make speedy backups or access archived data.  It is very convenient and helpful. Alas, some would argue that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt attachment provides adequate support for these things -- I'd still prefer a unit with the easy swap option--a workstation is supposed to be all about power and flexibility.   By way of example, Samsung realized its design error in eliminating some features and re-introduced user-removable storage to its latest line of phones.

Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hello to all,I hope someone can help me:I have an HP laptop 15-ay 035nl and I bought a Samsung SSD 850 evo and a caddy to replace DVD reader with the HDD mounted on the laptop. What have I done:- SSD has been put in place of the HDD, caddy was not in. I installed Windows 10 and everything was great - I replaced the DVD  with caddy with inside the HDD and here the problems started because: beginning the disk was not recognized, then I mounted again and had to wait a lifetime before it could be recognized by windows. When it was recognized I tried to format it from windows but I could just delete partitions.  I had 500 gb of unallocated space. - At this point, I swapped the two hard drives putting the SSD in the caddy and the HDD inside the laptop. Windows did not start, not only appeared a blue screen saying there was a hardware failure. When I put the SSD within the pc windows it had been corrupted and I had to reinstall windows  again. Same problem happened also when I disconnected the HDD from the motherboard and there was just SSD in the  caddy. - At this point I put the SSD in the laptop and the HDD again in the caddy.  I could not get  to format the HDD neither instal windows on SSD getting the error 80300024. Once I removed the caddy I was able to install windows on the SSD Now I am very confused because I do not know if the problem is the caddy itself or the DVD controller on the motherboard. Can someone help me?Tha... Read more

I've just fitted a hard drive caddy and put 2nd hd in it.It has a sliding lock at the front which prevents the caddy from being removedand it also incoporates a power switch. The instuctions say the drive can be hot-swapped because releasing the lockcuts off the power supply to the disk in the caddy. If I do this with W98 runningis there likely to be a problem when I put the other disk in?My instinct is to switch the computer off before swapping drives. Any views / experiences on this please?CD

Answer:HD Caddy and hot swapping.

It is hot swappable,if you use software, but is it necessary?safer to swap when machine is off.Why risk losing your files.

Hey guys! im new to the forum, so bare with me if i ask something that's already been answered.  the question:i have a spare 2,5" Kingston SSD lying around and i would like to put it in my Acer Apire Es1-572 50N4, i figured i need an ODD (or is is HDD?) caddy, because i want it to occupy the non existing optical drive. I noticed the internal SATA slimport when i pushed out the plastic "thing" that fill out the optical bay, so i know its doable and im pretty sure i need one in 9 or 9,5". What caddy will you recommend?are the caddies universal? PS, i from Denmark if thats make a different.   thanks in advance for you answers

Hi all, I had recently upgraded my HP 15-g002ax with an SSD which now has no additional HDD slots.I believe the DVD drive can be replaced with an HDD + Caddy combination.I understand my laptop needs a 9.5mm one, but it seems there are several types of Caddied - SATA/Universal/Unibody etc. Could anyone assist me with a Caddy compatible with my laptop? Current laptop specifications: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/6545564/model/7101305/document/c0431501...

I've taken an IDE HD from my now-defunct old Windows ME computer, placed it in an appropriate caddy and connected it to my newish WinXP machine. The intention was to wipe it and use it as an image and data file back-up. At this point it occurred to me that it would be sensible to look at its contents just in case there was anything left on it worth keeping. However, I'm not sure how to do this, or even if it's possible at this stage. It is recognised in the Disk Management window as Disk03 (but no drive letter), with the right capacity and manufacturer's details, but is marked as not initialized and unallocated. Right-clicking brings up a sub-menu with an 'initialize' option, but I thought this was equivalent to re-formatting it so I'm reluctant to try it.It's not vital, as all the important stuff was backed up and transferred to the new computer. But any comments or advice would, as always, be gratefully received.

Answer:Reading old HD in caddy

Have you changed the jumper on the HD from Master to Slave? Also your ME HD may be FAT32 instead of NTFS. Don't know if this might make it unrecognised.

Is there any software program that can read a HDD in a caddy irrespective of the formatting of the files.

What I'm trying to read is a HDD out of a Humax 9200 PVR.

Answer:reading a HDD in a Caddy

oops sorry I didn't understand the question at first.

I thought you were wanting windows to access it. which it will not do usually. windows only likes to see other windows installs

Hi,I have a T60 and I need to install a new hard drive.  I do not have the HD caddy anymore and I was wondering if I can still properly seat the HD without it.  Also, I have a SATA hard drive replacement - will this work with my T60? Thanks,Peter

Answer:Installing HD in T60 w/o caddy

Welcome to the forum! SATA is the correct drive type, but no hard drive should ever be installed in a ThinkPad without a caddy for a variety of reasons. Spend a few bucks on eBay and do it properly...
