Buffalo External Hardrive

Question: Buffalo External Hardrive

Hi allfamily member purchased one of these and proceeded to install it without reading any documentation. 2 basic questions I need help with:1. Theyre running XP pro but chose the FAT32 option to format the drive during install. Main PC is NTFS. Will this causae any problems?2. Assuming the answer to q1 is no - the drive has install files, log files, and folders all over the place on it. Once installed and back up is running is it safe to either tidy these files into one folder and leave them on the external drive, or take them off the drive to increase space, and keep them on main PC?Hope that all makes sense.ThanksSi67

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently bought a BUFFALO  External  USB  DVD  RW ;  I am unable to use it with my COMPAQ  MINI  110-1100 DX LAPTOP  Product  Number : VM146UA#ABA . My mini Laptop does not have an inbuilt DVD RW. Will  somebody please guide about as to how to use this External DVD to install any software CD on to my Laptop ? Also, how to see & listen to a DVD using this DVD RW ? Can I use this DVD RW with my Desk-Top PC also ? Please guide in details and help me. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:BUFFALO External USB DVD RW

What is the model of your Buffalo DVD-RW drive? Your laptop should automatically detect the drive when you plug it in via USB. Your drive will definitely work with your desktop, too.In the rare case that drivers need to be installed for your DVD drive, you would want to go to the official Buffalo site to download them.

My external is 2 500g hard drives and is preset for FAT32

I want to be able to put files bigger than 4gs on it, so I have to change it to NTFS, right?

The wall I run into is . . . I will be buying a Macbook Pro in a few weeks and I want to be able to use the HD between the two. From what I read it looks like I could do that with FAT32, but not with NTFS.

I want to know the best thing to do so I don't have to reformat my drive later and have this all be a toilet flush.

I really want to prepare for my mac.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

Answer:Buffalo External USB 2.x HDD keep disconnecting

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Hello. I've had the above drive for about a year & a half. It worked fine (on Win XP Home) up until a few days ago, when I connected it to my new laptop (Win 7).
On connecting, a warning message came up saying that Windows had detected disk errors - did I want to scan it? I said Yes, it completed the scan (no errors), but I couldn't access any of the files in Windows Explorer. I Safely Removed USB Hardware and tried again, but said No to the error scan ("Are you sure, some files may be corrupted?"). On continuing, I could see all my files.
I then selected Windows Scandisk, and once the scan completed the HDD was very slow to select. It didn't show any of my files again, and showed the following error messages whenever I tried to access it:

Hi

I bought a brandnew Buffalo 3TB external HDD Drive station (USB 3.0) (HD-LB3.0TU3-EU)
and wanted to make a second backup of my files which are on another Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 external harddrive.

So i plugged both in and both were recognized without problem. Then i began to copy the files from the WD to the Buffalo harddrive (both attached via usb 3.0) and it just copied 1 folder and told me that the original file location is not anymore existing and stopped copying.
And somehow my WD drive was not showing up anymore.(but still my buffalo drive)
The WD even did not show up in the disc management setup!
So i decided to reboot and before i did it i removed the buffalo drive via the "safely remove hardware and eject media" button(Right at the startup corner right bottom of the screen).
Instantly after hitting this button the buffalo drive began to make a horrible repeating scratching noise, like trying to park or move the hdd heads continuously). I waited 30 secs then i pushed the shoot down button, nothing after 2 mins waiting for the shutdown of windows i pushed the reset button and reentered win8

Fortunately my wd drive with my files was recognized but not the buffalo drive anymore
At the disk management setup it gives me the initialise disk where i can choose between MBR and GUID but with both options it gives me an I/O drive error
I see it as an offline HDD and cannot do anything with it not even remove it.
And i connected it on my Windows 7 laptop, sa... Read more

Hi,

I've got a 1TB Buffalo USB external drive. It worked great until about 2 days ago. It was pre-formatted to FAT32, needing to put a 10 gig file on it, I reformatted it to NTFS. No problem.

Except my Xbox, my laptop, and my PS3 didn't recognise it anymore. Only the desktop did. I checked online, it wasn't a problem, cause PS3 and Xbox only read FAT 32 hard drives... so i knew i just needed to format back, and it would all be fine.

So I tried to format it back, but FAT32 was not an option. only exFAT. After reading about for a bit i found out i could format in FAT32 from the CMD dos Prompt.

So I tried that. It stayed at 0% for what seemed like forever, and then the system shut down.

I rebooted and now my drive isn't there. It shows in device manager as "hard drive" with no extra details, but says it's working.

It shows in Drive Manager, but is listed as "Unallocated" and "not initalised"

I know i need to initialise it to get it show again, however anytime i try I get this error:
Data Error (Cyclic redundacy check)

Can someone please help? I dont care if i lose all the data on it, I just want it reformatted and reinitalised so i can start using it again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps in any way.

I have a 500GB Buffalo external hard drive that I use for music, pictures and misc backed up documents. The problem is, I seem to be missing a few GB's.

The HD shows:
173 GB of music
2 GB of pictures
5 GB of documents
180 total should be listed....

.... but instead it tells me that 446 GB are being used and the HD is nearly full! For the life of me, I can't figure where all this "extra stuff" is located. Why would my HD be saying it's so full, but I can't find anything else on it?

I did a disk cleanup on the HD, then I did a Windows defrag on it... and it still shows 446 GB being used in total.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi all,

New to this site, so hope this is in the right place and hope you can help!

I have just purchased a 500G Buffalo external hard drive, HD-PC500U2/BK-EU. Plug it in and it is recognised by my P.C (running XP) but I cannot go any further and cannot run the DriveNavi.exe file which is on the external HD. All I get are the following error messages

The application failed to inialize properly (0xc0000006). Click OK to terminate the application.

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe
Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

and

F:\DriveNavi.exe is not a valid Win32 application

I have trawled the net to try to find a solution and Buffalo support are no use at all...and extremely frustrated and would appreciate any help, please

Hi Everyone,

I am using a Buffalo LinkStation (LS-QVL), it is configured for RAID 10 and has 4 Terabytes of capacity. I am not using anywhere near the full capacity (instead I am only using about 6%!). It has occurred to me that I should make an off-site backup of the content on the LinkStation. Toward this end I would like to backup the contents of the LinkStation to an external USB hard drive.

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to backup files from this NAS to an external hard drive? If it is possible any advice on how to set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Backing up Buffalo NAS to an external hard drive

Unless your NAS has a provision to mount the external hard drive via USB and supports file transfers between the volumes, you're going to have to do this over the network with the external hard drive connected to a PC that is connected to the NAS.

Hi,I have an external USB Buffalo hard disk attached to my Lenovo E73 W7 Pro PC.If i boot with it connected then the PC won't boot through to Windows until i disconnect the Buffalo.I have been into the Bios and set the boot order to not only styart with the HD but also ignore USB and CD ROM.Interestingly before i changed the Bios it would stop the boot and when i disconnected the Buffalo i would get the option to go the bios; now that i have changed the bios although it still doesn't boot through to Windows, when i disconnect the Buffalo the Windows spalsh screen appears immediately. So..My thoughts are that the bios change has been a good thing and now there is a Windows option that needs to be changed to make it boot to Windows ignoring the Buffalo until it has started. Has anyone any advice please? Cheers,Simon

Hi,I usually have my buffalo external hdd connected to my dell studio 15. I tried shutting down once but accidentally put it into hibernation. So after it hibernated I switched it back on, the hdd would spin up a couple of times, but as it got to the desktop it would spin down. I try to access the hdd and I can see the folders etc, when I try entering a folder such as "music" for example, the hdd would spin up, but then a message would say the folder music is unavailable. So I refresh the window, and the music folder disappears! just like that, now after the spin up, i can access the rest of the folders, but the "music" is just gone forever. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can get that folder back. It was actually the "documents" folder in my case, but music was an example. Thanks

I have a desktop PC that does not come with any USB 3 ports on its mainboard. Yesterday I bought a PCI-E to USB 3.0 expansion card with two ports.

I installed the card, connected the floppy power cable, and windows 10 installed its driver with no issues. There is no yellow mark in the device manager.

First I connected my USB 3.0, 2.5" Seagate drive and windows properly recognized it and set its speed at USB 3.0. I copied a lot of files at a constant max speed of about 95 MB/s. So far everything is good.

Then I tried my 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive. No matter what I did, it simply would not connect at USB 3 speed, only USB 2. I tried both ports. The drive's external power adapter is connected.

Windows does know that it's a USB 3 device, since it shows the message "This device can perform faster if connected to USB 3.0".

The drive does come with a cable with blue USB 3 connectors.

Anyone ever experienced such an issue before?

Answer:External 3.5" Buffalo USB 3.0 drive only connects at USB 2.0 mode

In general, the first thing to try with any USB device that doesn't behave correctly (or at all) is to open Device Manager, find the device and uninstall it. If you don't currently have the device connected you may need to select 'show hidden devices' in Device Manager's 'View' menu.

If an inappropriate driver had been loaded the first time it was connected it will continue to be used on all subsequent times. Uninstalling it will make windows 'forget' and choose the driver from scratch.

Answer:Problem recognizing new external SATA external Hardrive

A sata drive has no master/slave jumper so that wouldn't be a factor in it not working. I believe you still have to load sata drivers to make the drive work. If the drive didn't come with them then you could probably download them form the manufacturer's website.

Just a generic question...
Does anyone know if the Buffalo WLA2-G54C is compatible with non Buffalo wireless routers? I have a Dlink router (don't know the model off the top of my head) with various brands of client adaptors. I've heard good things about the WLA2-G54C for the repeater function.
I ask this because of this statement on their website:
Repeater/Bridge function of the WLA2-G54C is supported only with Buffalo bridges and routers. But, the device can communicate with other manufacturer's 802.11b and 802.11g client adapters either in bridge/repeat mode or as a stand alone access point.
Does this mean that it simply won't work with other brand routers or that they just won't support it. I would think the latter but was curious if anyone had any experience with it.
Thanks!

Question: external hardrive

i just bought a maxtor external hardrive. what i dont like about it is that i have to plug it into the wall. for this reason, it never turns off, even when i turn off my computer. will this shorten the life of the hardrive? and is it safe to unplug it every time i turn off the computer?

thanks

Answer:external hardrive

Hello,

Unfortunately external hard drives (3.5" HDD) require an additional power source. Internally they can take advantage of power from the PSU using molex connectors, but externally, USB and Firewire very simply cannot deliver enough power to the drive, hence a power adaptor.

Some external hard drive enclosures (though they tend to be cheap ones from china on eBay) come with, or are compatible with special PCI power brackets, whereby a molex power connector from the PSU plugs into the PCI power bracket on the inside of the PC. A power cord then plugs into the bracket at the back of the PC, while plugs into and powers the external drive. The drive automatically turns of after shutdown because it's powered by the PSU.

Your drive is powered independantly from the system's PSU. So, you're required to turn if off manually. I personally only turn my external drive on when I need it, and turn if off when I don't need it.

Because it's plugged externally using USB or Firewire, the drive is hotswappable, meaning you can unplug the drive and turn if off, even with your PC still on...well, as long as you don't unplug it or turn the drive off when you're still transferring data to / from it - this will damage files.

Hello all i am new to computer help. I recently ran a norton anti-virus scan on my desktop in fear of that worm going around. I had my external hard drive hooked up to it when it did it. My hardrive is a Maxtor 3100 80gb hard drive.  After running the scan and cleanup options my external hardrive no longer works. When i plug it into the desktop the computer recognizes it but when i click on the hardrive slot in the my computer screen it says that its blank. It even gives me the little screen showing how much free space is on it and how much space is in total and still when i click on it it says its blank. This is an emergency b/c im a 3rd yr animation student whos about to graduate and all of my projects are gone.  Anyone with any help or suggestions or anything will be deeply appreciated. Im running windows xp on my computer. thank you. :' :'

Answer:please help! external hardrive

Question: External Hardrive

If I get an external Hard Drive and have my PC boot to the USB Ext HD to do secure financial transactions, ( I obviously will only plug in the usb drive when I want to boot with that drive. ) Once the pc is booted, obviously the internal HD will be on, but the HD I will be operating from will be the Ext HD. MY question is this. If I am not "using" the internal HD, can any potential virus/key logger "Jump" from that internal HD to the Ext HD?

Thanks for your assistance,
Jerry

Answer:External Hardrive

no they shoudlt jump over, most keyloggers/viruses are set to launch on the os launch. They shoudl be ok. If you are very paranoid you can unplug the internal drive. Or just key good antivirus/malware scanners.

Im not to good with computers but my external hard drive i droped and caught it by the usb wire.. By doing this the usb piece broke off. (I dont know what anything is called because im not the best with computers) But i took it apart and i realize theres something that hooks up to the back of the threads of the external hardrive allowing it to be read by the usb .. Does anyone know what this is called? if anyone can follow what im saying.. because it doesnt make much sense at all.. Any help is appreciated

Answer:MY external Hardrive

*has puzzled look* can you take any pics, to show us? are you saying that the wires from where the usb cable plugs in, are broke off? it would still be beneficial, if we can see it. - sos

Question: External hardrive

I dreadfully need an external harddrive for my laptop as I've packed the thing full. I was thinking of getting one and putting my games on it. I play quite graphic intensive games such as bioshock, assassins creed, half life, the witcher, crysis, and stuff like that. I payed a lot for my laptop lol. My question is if I were to get a external hard drive and install my games would playing them off that affect their performance enough to discourage the use of an external hard drive for that?

Answer:External hardrive

Yes you will take a performance hit running them from an external drive.Generally speaking Desktop rigs are the best for gaming...

Hi

I have a new Travelstar 40gb external hardrive for backup purposes only. It is either a TS-100 or TS-200 Bluegh St? First time I used it it seemed to worked OK. I have tried to update my backups but my system now does not recognise this USB attachment. The light on the harddrive is on. On previous backup harddrive was designated as "E drive" but now? Operating system is XP OS2
I tried using "add hardware" but again system did not recognise addition.

Answer:External Hardrive

Try a different USB cable.
Do other devices work with the USB port?
Does the drive work on another system?
Try doing a Window's System Restore back before the problem started.

I have a Mac Mini (1 year old) and a Dell Dimension 3000(2 years old). The hard drives are getting pretty full on them and I was thinking of getting an external hard drive I could use to backup my machines, use for extra storage and perhaps install a seperate OS. I know nothing about hard drives and was wondering if their are any recommendations on what to get. The size of the macs hard drive is 70GB and the PC's is 80GB so I'm guessing something with 150GB would be the minimum.

Anyway thanks !!

Answer:Best External Hardrive

Hard drive prices have dropped like rocks in the past year or so. Example: you can get a 500GB USB2.0 External drive for under $140 http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=203400931&adid=17662

If I were to buy/make an external drive, I would look for on with eSATA support. Fastest transfer rates out there, and almost always has USB2.0 support also. Requires SATA drive.

Unless you find an amazing deal (or the manufacturer has a guarantee against data loss if the drive goes bad, which is very rare), I would recommend buying a nice SATAII drive like this one and get a nice eSATA enclosure. Pop the drive inside, format, and you're good. Here is an example of an external eSATA enclosure with USB2.0 support.

Even if you cant utilize the eSATA feature right away, you can use the USB2.0.

When I plug it on (USB) the computer recognises it. it appears in the device manager, and is apparently working fine. The led on the case even lights up.
But the device does not appear in My Computer, and I have no way of accessing the data on the drive. Whats more I cannot hear the disk spinning or making an activity. iv tried updating the drivers. it does exaclty the same of a different PC.
Whats wrong, is my external hardrive simply broken, and if so can I still recover all my data from it??

Question: external hardrive

Another question about my new external hardrive.I have noticed that the new DVD players have inbuilt hardrives to record freeview TV programmes. If I have a old DVD player (not recorder)can I connect it to my external hardrive and record from the TV.I am just playing about with these ideas to save buying new equipment.I am sure its a daft question - sorry!

Answer:external hardrive

I don't think so - the required signals are not externally available with the components you specify. But if your aim is to put together a TV HD recorder, you can get internal TV cards and external tuner units which would work with your computer to provide the same functions. And you can probably store the (TV) programmes on the external HD to avoid filling up the internal disk.I think PCA did a review of suitable units last year. If I remember correctly, the price was typically 50-100.

Hey everyone I have a Western Digital External Hard drive. It's a 500 gig drive. It still has over 100 gig left, yet it won't let me copy things over to it. The only way I can actually copy things to it is if I'm downloading pictures from my camera. But if I do a backup or try to just copy things from one drive to It, it tells me that the drive is full. Question: External Hardrive

I have a Sony VIAO PC (about 4 years old) running xp, it is a RX540, and I have installed an external Maxtor 320 gig hard dirve, My computer only recognizes a small amount of storage capability of the external hardrive, how do I get use of all the storage on the drive, I am using it for storage only. thanks

Answer:External Hardrive

How much of the storage is being recognized? If you're only recognizing 128GB, you need to update Windows XP to service pack 1 or higher. Windows XP without service pack can't read drives over 128GB.
There's also a chance not all the space was partitioned. To check go to start, run, then type diskmgmt.msc and look if the drive shows up to its full size (should show up as about 293 or 294GB), and see if there's any unallocated space.
If you're saying you're seeing 293GB when you're expecting 320, it's because of the way hard drive marketers count their gigabytes. See my post here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f16/...ml#post1680921

SATA hardrive external enclosure, with AC power supply, with usb and sata connectors
i formatted and partitioned it without problem using the SATA connection

yet using the USB connection theres issues:

When its connected the safely remove icon appears
In device manager it is recognized as
a USB device - under drives
USB mass storage device - under USB serial controllers
Its not recognized in disk management nor in my computer

I know its not got a conflicting mapped network drive letter, as its assigned X:

Exactly the same issue on two seperate computers on all the usb slots i had the will to try. USB pen drives work fine.

I've read every thread i could find and most problems seem to be the conflicting drive letters, i was wondering if it might need some changes to the BIOS?

Question: external hardrive

My husband very kindly got me an external hardrive for Christmas as I enjoy playing around with my computer. I don't know why I need it really but I have to use it as he bought it for me!This is really a complete beginners question. How do I safely go about downloading music from the internet - free - onto this hardrive. I really hate downloading stuff but I know I am not getting the most from my computer.

Answer:external hardrive

Well, most "free" music is stolen and in breach of copyright and we can't give you advice on that here, I'm afraid - it's in breach of the forum rules. To be honest, though, the best way to buy music in my humble opinion is to buy CDs and rip them. Music you buy online is a) encoded in a lossy format and b) hedged about with restrictions on how you can use it. Buy the CD, rip it yourself to your chosen format and your chosen bitrate, then you've got the non-lossy hard copy (the CD itself) as a back-up. I like iTunes for ripping music but others will have other suggestions.

I have put photo's etc onto the hard drive and all works well.I decided to back-up my entire system which took some time, but I thought worth while.

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.Create an association in the Folder Options panel"

I have gone into folder options but do not seem to be able to do what I have been asked.
Have I done something wrong when creating the back-up? or am I using the external hardrive incorrectly?
I have been onto the support for Maxtor drives but cannot find the answere

Many thanks in advance :confused

Answer:Please Help, Please Help External Hardrive Help Please!

I assume you are talking about an external data disk. I would leave the MBR alone since for this type of disk the most important part is it's partition table which you don't want to damage.

With your external HDD connected give us a look at a Disk Management screen shot.
Go to:
Start orb; type disk management
Make it full screen
then use this tutorial to upload the screenshot.

Question: external hardrive

if i was to add a external hardrive to my laptop could i install my games on it instead of my main drive or is it for backup only.

Answer:external hardrive

Technically, you can install programs to an external hard drive. They'll run slower, still install files to the primary hard drive, and could generate errors when the drive isn't connected. You also need to make sure that the external drive has the same drive letter every time it's connected.

My friend managed to deposit a nice little virus / trojan of some form onto my external hard-drive. It causes the registry files to change so that task manager and regedit are disabled. I have fixed these problems however I am unsure how to find the file / virus that is on the hardrive causing this.
I have searched for this but found no way to route it out, Norton finds nothing and is fully up to date etc. Interestingly it only does it's deeds if you try and open the hard drive through my computer in which it appears as an empty folder. If the autoplay function is used and you "open folder to view files" then no adverse affects are experienced. It seems to be triggered by the opening of the folder through my computer. I have seen similar problems with drives appearing as folders and they are aparently registry issues according to what I have read however this is obviously linked to this virus. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hi, I have a query which I am hoping somebody can help me with please. I have lost the reinstallation disks for my laptop and have been told if I want replacement disks I will have to pay 70. I have a program called "Paragon drive copy", which can aparently make a copy of everything on your pc including the operating system and so I am desperately wanting to give this a try as I cannot afford the 70 . There are instructions with paragon on how to do the copy but it says you need to have " unallocated space available , that isn't occupied by existing partitions or data", on the drive which you want to copy to. My external harddrive currenly has 44 GB of important stuff on it and the rest is free . I am wondering can I partition my external harddrive and make a copy of my operating system to this source without losing any of my data. and I also need to know how to go about doing this partitioning. I would very much appreciate advice please as I am perplexed here Thanks so much Beth

Answer:Need help partitioning external hardrive please

If the existing partition/s does/do not take up the entire space, with some remaining unformatted, then add another via Windows Disk Management (right-click on My Computer, select Manage...) If there is no unformatted space but one of the partitions can be deleted, use the same tool. If there is no unformatted space and all existing partitions are required, then resize them using Partition Magic or Paragon Partition Manager. If you don't want to do this, substitute Drive Copy with either True Image or Partition Manager again (which includes True Image's functionality) and make an image that can be stored anywhere on your backup drive. That's it, basically.

Answer:external hardrive newbie

That actually sounds about right for a USB external drive, using USB 1.1, USB 2.0 should be 1/4 of that or better.  USB 1.1 was designed at 1.5MB/sec shared.  Which means all devices on that particular port share the 1.5.  The actual throughput is normally about 0.7MB/sec, so the math there works out to about 16.7 minutes to copy the file. The designers of USB never envisioned high speed USB drives, the design was more on the line of printers, scanners, PDAs, mice, keyboards, etc.  Relatively low throughput items. You should probably consider the USB drive as more of a backup and archive device than a place to work from, especially for graphics type operations. If you are working with lots of video then you probably need to consider adding another high speed internal drive.

There's probably a hack for that but in the mean time, just use the "Save As" and point it the first time to where you want it to go. After that, it should continue going there. If you open that document again, the "Save" function will save it back where it came from.

out of the blue, my external hard drive became inaccessible. Usually it wouldnt even show up in my computer. When it would, it would be assigned a letter, L. When I tried to access it I got "Data Error: CRC"

After looking around I found I should run chkdsk /r /f L: in the command prompt. This halfway worked: I could actually go into my drive and copy most things, but anything in video or picture format wont. it says "Cant read from source file or disk". Interesting enough when i send a shortcut to the desktop it will play.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me.....

Thanks

Hey everyone i was just wondering i have an external hardrive ( maxtor basics 3200 320gb hardrive) well its after breaking on me so i took it in to be repaired and get the data i had on it to be transferred to a different hardrive.well he told me i would need to get a new external maxtor hardrive and the parts would be transferred .I went to pc world today and unfortunately they no longer have it in stock. So the clerk recommended i get a 320 gb hardrive by western digital he says maxtor dont make the hardrive themselves and the hardrives would be similiar and he would be able to take the missing parts from one to the other.I'll ring the crowd tomorrow and ask em but does anyone think this will work???Thanks your advice will be greatly appreciated

Change, add, or remove a drive letter

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

If you don't like the letter Windows has assigned to a new drive or you want to organize your drive letters in a certain way, you can change the drive letter.

You can assign the letters C through Z to each drive on your computer. A and B are usually reserved for floppy disk drives, but if your computer does not have floppy disk drives, you can assign A and B to volumes. You can see which drive letters are used on your computer by opening Computer.

Click to open Computer.

You can change, add, or remove a drive letter by using Computer Management.

Click to open Computer Management. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In the Navigation pane, click Disk Management.

Right-click the partition or drive that you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Do one of the following:

To assign a drive letter if one has not already been assigned, click Add, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.

To change a drive letter, click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.

To remove a drive letter, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to remove it.

Notes
Many MS‑DOS and Windows programs make references to specific drive letters. If you change a drive l... Read more

Hi,
My father just tried to install a new usb external hardive on his pc.After hooking it up and installing the software/drivers for the first time it was working, just at a slower speed due to having a 1.1 usb.So we left the software and drivers installed on the pc and installed an new 2.0 pci card.
After booting up the pc recognized the new hardware and all seemed fine. But after a couple of days the pc slowed down drastically, and eventually would not make it to the welcome screen. So I did a system restore and it took the new software for the external drive off,and the pc booted up again just fine.
So I reinstalled the software again and it did the same thing,it wouldn't boot up.I'm totally lost as to how to resolve this. How do I get this to work without it freezing everthing up?

External Drive:Model>Maxtor one touch2 200GB 7200 rpm 8mb cache
New usb 2.0 pci card:4 port Dynex highspeed 2.0
Pc:Hp pavilion win xp pro 800mhz processor 256mb ram 30 gb hardrive

Your help is appreciated,
Grimmer

I recently bought my first external hard drive. A Z-Drive from Cintre with a Seagate 160MB hard drive in it. The installation went fine and I partitoned the drive into three primary drives. After that I did a bit of testing. I would power up the external drive while in My Computer so I could make sure that the three drives would come up on the screen. Then I would power it down and watch the drives go away. After that I loaded or copied data onto two of the drives then turned the unit back off then on again to continue my testing. When I did this time the three drives came up with different drive letters and I even got that message window that you get when Windows wants to play back a multimedia file. I got two of those! I then continued testing by turning off the unit again then back on. This time the drive letters changed again. And it had continued to do this with the drive letters changing everytime I powered it down then back up. Finally it got to a point when the drive was on that no drive letters appeared. I am stumped by all of this and have sent the unit back to the vendor. Before I invest in another external drive again though I want to find out what happened and make sure it's nothing in my system. Could it have been a bad drive that was causing the problem?

Hi all,

I've been looking for an answer on the net for quite some time due to a problem i've been having with my 250GB external hard drive. It used to run off of a FAT 32 file system, however I edit video and as such was having problems putting files over 4GB onto it due to FAT32 being quite a dated file system. Because of this I decided to convert from FAT 32 to NTFS... which appeared to have solved my problem... until I tried to use the harddrive on a MAC, which I am now aware can only read NTFS file systems but not write to them. I've now discovered that it is apparently impossible to convert my hard drive from NTFS back to FAT32 as windows decided it wasn't worth designing coversion that way as they want to encourage users onto the newer NTFS system. My problem is that I now can't write my files from MAC to my external hard drive, which really sucks and is causing me alot of problems. I was wondering is there any answer to this problem, such as partitioning the harddrive for NTFS and a MAC file system? I'm completely at a loss and any advice would be much appreciated

All the best and I look forward to your advice,

James

Answer:Need help external hardrive broke :(

This might sound crazy but it does work, wrap it up securely in 2 or 3 plastic bags then put it in the freezer over night, next day plug it in to your computer and retrieve data as quickly as possible before it warms up.I used to be a Technician at PC World a few years ago and from experience with a few stores around the country I doubt they would be able to help

Hi I just a western digital 2tb passport ultra. I use win 8.1 64bit. It was working well yesterday but when I plugged It in today it autoruned the software to unlock the drive . I put in the correct password. But now the actual passport drive doesn't show. I tried plugging it in my other computer running win 7. And as soon as I put the password in the drive pops up. Does anyone know what's the problem?

Answer:os not showing external hardrive

Basically when i plug in my external hardrive it will autorun the password protecting software (circled in red in the attached image) prompting you to put the password in to unlock the drive

after typing the correct password. and the software confirming that the drive is unlocked. the actual drive "My passport" does not pop up. So i cannot access my files.

Everything was working a day ago. Dont know why it suddenly stopped showing.

I reboot my computer and found that my seagate wasn't detected by my computer. I tried replugging everything in and rebooting my computer. Now it makes this strange buzz / hum noise constantly and i hope its not broken. Any advice is welcome.
