XP Froze then didn't load

Question: XP Froze then didn't load

I found that I couldn't open folders on my XP 64 bit machine, so I restarted. This set of the Windows didn't shut down properly page. I couldn't get the beast to start using any of the options. I thought as I back up every day that I would do a clean install of the OS. Wrong again I can't install XP 64 or 32 bit nor Vista 64 bit on the machine it shows shuts dwon and restarts the installation again. Ubuntu Linux has installed and is working. I believe that I could have a problem with the graphics card (drivers or card it's self) as the screen doesn't seem to refresh at it's normal speed. Could the graphics card have caused the original fault? All help greatly received. Joe

Preferred Solution: XP Froze then didn't load

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: XP Froze then didn't load

Hi joeartis,How far does the installation get before shutting down. Have you partitioned and formatted the drive or just installing over old operating system. If Linux has installed o.k. I cant see your graphics card being at fault otherwise you would be having problems with Ubuntu.

I was surfing yesterday when with multiple browser windows open when my browser froze. I noticed that other items weren't working properly like my tool bar wouldn't re-appear. I tried a CTL-ALT-DELETE but it wouldn't close any of the open processes. I tried to shut down and that wouldn't work either so I did a hard shut down and restarted in safe mode. I then ran Spysweeper twice and McAffee twice in safe mode which each identified a few items and deleted or quarentined them. I then tried to restart my computer which initally froze in the boot up process. I powered down and tried again. My machine restarted but after a few minutes of running will lock up again. I can only seem to operate in SafeMode which I'm doing now. I did manage to run Hijackthis in normal mode which you see below. Hey folks,

Not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but here's what happened. Whilst browsing, my PC froze with the screen changing to a strange pixelated zig zag pattern. Upon hitting the reset button, my computer now will not load to BIOS, with no beep- it just stays powered on with a black screen. The LED still functions and I can open the CD drive & close it.

Upon doing a bit of research, it sounds like it could be a video card problem. Although the fact that it randomly happened whilst browsing, and that I no longer get a beep on start up makes me think it could be a virus (although Avast! was running at the time)!

Any help as to how to fix greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Ran Windows Update on wife's computer today (Biostar A75-MH mobo, AMD A8-3850, 8Gb DDR3-1600, 64Gb Samsung 830 SSD boot drive, Win7 x64) and upon restart it froze at 35% installing the updates. After it did nothing for 30 min I rebooted. It boots to the desktop but with an error box saying failed to load sortbls.nlp. Explorer isn't working, can run any programs, Start menu won't come up, just sits with the blue circle spinning. Tried to run system restore but the 11-15 one disappeared from the list when I tried to run it and now just shows the only restore point as Windows Update Critical Update from today which fails. Startup Repair says no problems.

Any suggestions?

Sam

I got this laptop a week ago there was 11gb of used space then I loaded some stuff thats not even 2 gb then it ate up another 4 gb when I access the web, (just yahoo, slickdeals.net )which I normally do on a different computer it registered a used space of 27GB. I was forced to use the novo tool to reformat the C: drive, after reformating, the C: drive had consumed 14GB, (originally it was 11gb) I loaded a program that's 100mb and the office that's 500mb but it took out an additional 2GB. The free space went down to 13.2 gb then after a accessing the internet again on our office site it dropped down to 12.2 gb.  The last time I checked its now at 10.9gb of free space. I hope somebody can help me figure out what's happening. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Why does my C: drive eat so much space even if i didn't load anything???

When I turned on my computer today and log on to this site, now I checked my C: drive its down to 10.8gb from 10.9 yesterday. I know it has nothing to do with logging on to this site but can someone tell me what going on with this computer.  Thanks!

Posting a virus infection log and attaching DDS text when BLAM, computer froze, rebooted and now I can't even load safe mode, safe mode will load up until isapnp.sys then freezes. Recovery console installed but I don't know how to use it. Yesterday when it first froze when I was trying to post a log here for a rootkit auktb.sys I was somehow able to restart windows. I just found this forum while searching for help.

The mouse and keyboard were non functional after start-up yesterday. The only clue was an errer alert stating that, "Windows can not find the file: Sortkey.nlt. I did a search for this file and had quite a few hits. Some links were to Microft's "FixIt" links and one identified "Sortkey.nlt" to be a component of Net Framework 4. Other links, I believe, stated that a late version of Net Framework did contain a bug. As per Microsoft's instructions, I deleted this file in two locations and ran the FixIt routine that I had downloaded. The process finished by downloading and installing a new update to Net Framework, and my mouse and keyboard work great on the one computer on which I did the FixIt routine - I also have to do this on the other computer as well. Now I am apprehensive about re-connecting the KVM switch - wondering if the KVM did this to my computers. I filled out a "Support Form" on the StarTech Support page but I haven't received a response yet. Has anyone here had this experience when using a KVM to switch from on computer to another?

Additional Info:

Computer 1: Windows 7 Home Premium; Computer 2: Windows 7 Professional
StarTech Model: SC211KUSB, KVM switch (All USB interface)

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

Answer:KVM switch Didn't load on Windows start - err: Sortkey.nlp not found

Hello,
I could not find the KVM model you mentioned, but I did find model SV211KUSB, is that the one that you have? That is a typical device that goes between the keyboard/video/mouse and one, or more, computers.

A KVM Switch can be a wonderful little thing, and I use a similar one myself. A KVM Switch should not be having ANY effect on the files on your computers. So I think that the error on your screen is not related to your KVM Switch. That error may, or may not, be related to the problem of the computer not responding to the keyboard and mouse.

I recommend that you look at the user manual for your KVM Switch and see if it mentions some way to do a Reset. If it can do a Reset then that is the first thing to try if you have the unresponsive problem in the future. On my KVM Switch it will occasionally do the switch but only the keyboard works, so when I do the Reset then it fixes the mouse port.

This seems to be an issue that has occured on more than one occassion.

When my laptop restarts it comes up with the error c:\windows\system32\wmnetmgr.dll and that it is not installed correctly or something like that. Therefore, my profile doesn't load up properly and loads up a temporary profile with everything lost on my hard drive.

This is such an annoying thing and I've already done all of my system restores which say that they have completed successfully, however it is always loading up with this temporary profile, which loses all data when it shuts down.

I'm a bit of a noob with these issues and any information to help me out with this would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

I am having the user profile service error failed the logon, user profile cannot be loaded while trying to logon to a domain user name with Windows 7. I have tried unjoining the domain and rejoining and that didn't work. I have also tried looking in the
Local Registry under profilepath and that profile isn't even listed (because it's never even been logged onto that particular PC). I really need to get this working. Is there anything else I can do?

ok this is gonna be a bit long but i want the details there. the issue pc is my old pc. it has windows 7 its an asus msn-la motherboard i cloned this drive and used it in my new pc. after a few months my new pc's drive died and i took the old drive from the issue pc(witch was not giving issues at this time) and stuck it into my new pc until my replacement drive came. when i got the replacement drive i cloned the drive again onto the replacement drive and then put the new drive in the new pc had no issues there. put the old drive back into the issue pc (this is when issues started) the pc booted up to the windows desktop loading screen fast but once it got there it sat there for like 5 min before loading into windows. once it loaded into windows it was un usable for around 10 min while it loaded background stuff. once it finally loads into windows if i try to open anything its still responding extremely slow. is there anything i could do to fix this or is this going to me a re install only situation? i did try to use a windows 7 disk to do a startup repair but it claimed i couldn't do it because i dident install from that disk.

Question: froze

I turn my computer on and it loads to the screen saver but none of the programs that pop up during start up appear, it will then flicker from that screen to black and back again, then after about 5 minutes it freezes up. Now i Noticed this after a restart. I had used the "msconfig" feature to try and turn off start up programs, and i acciddentally did something bad. Please help me .

Answer:froze

Try pressing F8 (could be a different F-key, it's usually F8 though) during startup. You should see a black screen with multiple selections, such as starting in safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, networking, etc.

Select the "Start with last known good configuration" option and press enter. See if that helps.

If not, do the same thing again, and start in safe mode. If the system stays stable, try running System Restore to a point BEFORE you made the changes.

Question: Everything Froze

I was surfing the net with Firefox 3.5, when everything just stopped responding! Even the mouse and keyboard! I had to restart manually, and a "recovered from fatal error" kind of msg showed. Since then I have installed the AMD processor driver and dual core optimiser. The only major installation before the crash was Peer Gaurdian 2 RC1. Could it have caused the freeze? OR else maybe some default driver?

Answer:Everything Froze

Yes, it is definitely possible that PG could have caused something.

Upload the latest minidump from C:\Windows\Minidump to Rapidshare and we will analyze it for you.

And/or you can uninstall PG and not just disable it. You may find you have no more crashes.

Question: My PC froze

Hello!
My PC (Windows 7, laptop) froze yesterday, just out of the blue. The PC was in idle state, except for Winamp (a song was playing). It froze on the 14th second of the song. The PC is in perfect shape, no malware, no anomalies. So, the PC froze and nothing helped, no Ctrl+Alt+Del, nothing. I had to reset it manually. There was no BSOD, so there is no minidump. Is there a way to see what caused this? Like a log file of some sort or anything?
Thank you!

Question: Pc just froze

1st time this has happened

what happened was i was dling hitmanprox64 on chrome using internet download manager
and once i pressed open everything just froze. I waited for like 3 mins and tried crtl-alt-del nothing worked. So i restarted and i dled another copy of hitmanpro and now everything seems to be good again..
also checked event viewer nothing too specific showing. if it matters i had steam and origin and avast running in background

anyidea what might have caused it?

Answer:Pc just froze

I would consider doing a scan with
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Could be your system was just loaded down. Although it is pretty unusual to hard lock. If it happens again then post as it could be a sign of some hardware developing a problem. But I wouldn't panic over one fluke lockup.

edit: also it's not uncommon to get a fault if you run 2 av type programs simultaneously. It may be ok to scan while you are running a real time shield but if you run 2 there's a high probability of conflict.

Hi, I recently build myself a new PC. It was running fine for first three days, no problems, running crysis on max settings. Yesterday I was in a game then the system froze, I turned it off, turned it back on, everything seemed to power up, but nothing happened. I suspected it might have been a lose cable, so opened up side panel, made sure everything was secure. I left the panel open to check the fans were all working. Turned the pc on, they were all still working, but same problem. Nothing on screen doesn’t even get the start-up info on CPU/RAM.

I read a few forums, some suggested resetting CMOS, so powered down the pc, took out the cmos battery, and set the jumpers to reset. I waited an hour, and put everything back how it was. Still, the problem was still there.

I tested the monitor on another pc, it worked. I took out the ram leaving one in to check that wasn’t the cause. Still same problem. Im guessing its either the CPU/Mobo, but cant be sure.

If anyone has any suggestions on what I could do before sending things back, I will be grateful.

So i built a computer about in november and towards the end of december it froze up on my while i was converting and watching a video. I figure it could be a few things and i'm thinking of getting it diagnosed but wanted to post up here to see if anyone knew something i haven't tried yet.
So here's what the issue is. Computer froze up while it was running; programs, keyboard, mouse the whole 9 yards. I pressed the reset button on the comp to reboot and it powered down then when it goes to reboot my LED and fans turn on for the length of me taking my finger off the button then it turns off again. I've swapped hard drives, switched out ram, tried onboard graphics card and looked online for answers but I can't find my issue with anyone that's posted. The only thing i can thing of is swapping out motherboards and/or CPU but that's not something i wanna do unless i have too. So it's come down to lookin for a tech to help me out online or pay $35 for a diagnostic which i might have to do anyway, figured i'd give online a shot first though. thanks for your help.

So i figure it could be a few things
1. Motherboard failure
2. Power supply failure (doubtfully i.m.o)
3. CPU failure

It immediately locked up & it will not respond to any commands. If I could diable Avast it would probably correct the problem. Ray

Answer:Completely froze up

Why can't you start in Safe Mode? Restart the computer and hit F8 key after bootup until you get the Advanced boot menu. First choose Last Known Good Configuration. If this fails, try Safe Mode then run the Avast Cleanup tool

Question: Froze and died

Started on Christmas eve day, everything froze and had to push reset to re-boot. Kept happening sometimes right away sometimes after several hours. To make this story a little shorter, over the next two days I swapped out memory cards, video card, un-installed web cam and drivers, un-installed skype, did system restore to two weeks earlier. Still would freeze after a short while. Of interest after un-installing skype and re-booting, message "found new hardware"" installed new hardware need to reboot" which I did, but I hadn't installed any new hardware and should have checked hardware manager before re-booting (oh well). Started back up and shortly froze again. Pushed reset and on restart got blue screen of death indicating a hardware problem. Pushed reset again and nothing. mobo self test 75. Tried again several times after checking all connections and now get self test 7F. Disconnected all drives and still get 7F.
Now what??
Built this system a little over a year ago and it has been working fine with out any problems.

Question: Mouse Froze

Hello....Have a problem with mouse being stuck on my deesktop. The arrow won't move. I have a wireless mouse on it but have tried a wired mouse but it won't move. The monitor is set to go to sleep and the only way I can wake it up is to shut it down with the button and then restart. It doesn't help. I thought the wireless mouse was faulty and plugged in the wired mouse and maybe that's when it got stuck. If rebooting doesn't help I don't know what to do with it.

Hi, i was installing xp pro sp2 and it froze with 14 mins left and i turned of laptop (dell latitude d400) and now it just sticks on a light blue screen saying your start up will begin... help please.. james

Answer:installing xp and froze

you might want to try reinstalling it and make sure the disk isnt dirty or has fingerprints on it. that sometimes will cause it to freeze up and stop.if it does it again the disk may be scratched or damaged. or if it freezes again instead of turning off the computer take the disk out and put it back in and that might get you going again.once you get it installed and running right you might want to download and install sp3 as 2 isnt being supported anymore and you will get all of the latest updates needed.hope this helps.

Last time this happened somebody told me that I might have had bad SATA cables. This time it happened again. I also want to bring attention to a thread I made on Malwarebytes.

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/inde...click-fix-now/

I don't know if the problems are related. I scanned my PC with Webroot Anywhere and MBAM and nothing turned up.

My thoughts are it's a bad drive because it has all of the symptoms of a bad drive. However my C drive is an SSD and AFAIK SSDs are way more stable than HDDs. But I do have 2 HDDs I use as data drives so can a bad data drive also cause this stability issue? A few months ago I turned on my PC and it didn't see my F drive which is an HDD and my main data drive. I had to restart for it to detect it. Acronis drive monitor showed some issues with it but I haven't had those issues pop up and it's been over a month.

Also I leave my PC on and I have it run a scheduled task to shut down at 1:00 AM and I made it so it will do that regardless of if a program is running and this morning it was still on with MSI afterburner giving me a message about C: being full and I had to do a hard restart.

Answer:Froze and then restarted

Question: george froze out

computer starts up with a blue screen, when i try to activate my computer i get the error message that says that i have a security setting that prohibits me from running "ActiveX" on on this page. and also the start button does not pop up the program menu, it just depresses, or stays pushed in. so the only way i can shut down is to use control+alt+delete. I am so new at computers that it has taken me three days to get this far. my home e-mail is: any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. o/s is windows me. thanks george.

Answer:george froze out

I have removed your open e-mail address. It is a bad idea to publish these as they are regulary culled by spammers.

First, check the "how did I get infected" sticky in this forum and set your security settings to what is covered there.

If the problem remains, have you tried running System Restore? Start > run > msconfig > launch System Restore.

Try starting in Safe Mode to do this if necessary: press and hold the ctrl key promptly on startup. You should get a "startup menu" with Safe Mode as an option. See if you can access the startup menu in Safe Mode.

And do you have a WinME startup disk? There is yet another way to run System Restore, but you will need one.

http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q279736

If you don't have a startup disk you can download an OEM one for WinME from the site below. It must be downloaded to the hard drive first. Then the setup file is run to copy files to a clean floppy disk. You can use that to follow the Microsoft directions.

My system froze while playing a game. Not a typical freeze, an entire system freeze with a small border of black/green on the top edge. Cntrl-alt-del did nothing. I powered down the PC and turned it back on. It powered up, green check light came on for both CD and DVD drive, red light came on for hard drive, but no green light for system power and no boot. It just sits there on but not on. It makes all of the usual sounds except for the "beep" then boot up. There were no odd squeals, grinds, etc before during or after the freeze.

I ruled out a few things by process of elimination. I unhooked my internet router to take that out of the equation. I hooked up a different hard drive. I pulled my ram one stick at a time, trying to boot between each one, and pulled all three and tried to boot. I disconnected my cd and dvd drive and tried booting with just the hard drive hooked up. I pulled my graphics card and tried booting. I tried a different cable between hard drive and motherboard. I cleared my cmos ram using the jumper. I did everything I could think of.

I managed to get it to boot two other times, but both times within 10 minutes it froze again and I was back to square one. Neither time I got it to boot had anything in common, and trying to immediately reboot after the freeze was unsuccessful.

My system has a Soyo motherboard, Intel P4 processor 1.8gig, 1024 ram (broken into two 256 and one 512), a maxtor 80 gig hard drive, geforce 5200 graphics card.

Answer:PC Froze, now won't boot?

The fact that the PC is not posting even with all the RAM removed certainly sounds like the mobo has failed (and the black/green border round the monitor confirms it as far as I'm concerned as my old PC did exactly that when the mobo failed).

There is always the possibility that the PSU has failed which would obviously be cheaper than a mobo. Have you anyway of checking the outputs from the PSU?

So, about two weeks ago my PC started freezing up when surfing the Internet on google chrome. Hard freeze, no warning, no weird sound, just sudden lock up. No bsod. It wasn't specific to any certain webpage or thing. Thinking it was chrome related, I tried a number of fixes, with no success. I could use chrome for a minute or a few minutes then it would randomly freeze.

So, then the other day I was playing shadow of mordor and it locks up the same way. Hard freeze, but the background music still plays. When I restart, windows won't boot. Just goes to the logo and then black screen. Safe mode worked, so I end up just doing a full clean install, with a new os (was using 7, clean installed with 8.1). Clean install goes well.

After clean installing, I get action center message that my disk needs to be scanned. So I run chkdsk /r /f, restarted and let it run, then dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow. No problems found on scannow, and the action center message goes away. So I think I'm in the clear, right?

Wrong. I reinstalled steam, downloaded mordor and Valkyrie chronicles. Start playing Chronicles, go for about an hour, then it freezes on me. Hoping it's just the game, I reboot and try mordor. Play for about 10 minutes, it freezes the same as before, and again, doesn't want to boot up. It would seem the clean install did not work.

So now I'm thinking it must be hardware related. I'm not expert, just a hobbyist good at following advice I find on the I... Read more

Question: Computer froze

my computer always gets the occasional freeze and then BSOD ( with a simple restart everything is fine) it only happens every month or so. but today it froze and didnt go to a BSOD screen. it just went to a gray screen. i hit the power button to turn it off, then back on. When i turned it back on the pc fan in the back of the tower was running EXTREMELY LOUD and i noticed my computer was not starting up. so i turned it off and looked in the back and noticed massive amounts of dust. i did a little cleaning job and i tried to turn it on again and here i am. Do you think dust really was the problem? And should i do a large cleaning job in the back of the tower? and if so what would you recommend do to clean off the dust? I have bought compressed air to clean the vents of my ps3. thx for the help

Answer:Computer froze

Hiya flagstealer.

Yes, yes and yes.

Yes, it`s very possible that the build-up of dust was causing an overheating problem and shutting/crashing the system.

Yes, if there`s that much dust inside the case, you certainly need to do a thorough dust-out and clean-up, concentrating on but not limited to, areas such as the fans and heatsinks.

Yes, cans of compressed air are very convenient for just such a task and from experience, I`ve found the easiest way to do it is to disconnect all the wires, take the side of the case off and stand the machine outside somewhere so the breeze can carry it away as you`re blowing it clean ... although that bit probably comes from being a lazy cow and not wanting to vaccuum the carpet afterwards !

Question: Palm Froze Up

I added a program to my palm and when I tried to open it it wouldnt work and then the palm froze and it wouldnt even turn off so I figured if I let the battery drain it would turn on again...but it wont what do I do??!?!?

Answer:Palm Froze Up

someone is going to ask this so it might as well be me..

when you let the battery drain, did you recharge it?
ok, stupid question aside, you should be able to reset your palm via the reset button typically found on the back of the device. It's inset and requires a "pen" sized tip to depress.

If a reset doesn't work, you may have to do a hard-reset which will restore the device to factory settings and software. This action will typically wipe your saved data..it's basically like opening the box brand new.

Question: COMPAQ FROZE!

I have an older Compaq EVO N1020v that is flashing a Operating System not found screen upon start up? How can i get past this screen?

Answer:COMPAQ FROZE!

Generally, this means a cable, power or data, to the HDD is disconnected. Try that first, if that looks OK, check that your BIOS still shows the HDD. If it does not, but allows you to install it, then check your Real Time Clock. If it's wrong, your CMOS battery (button cell on the mobo) is so old it's not maintaining the settings when you unplug or shut off power to the computer.

Last but not least, your HDD could be bad...you can check that by installing it as a slave in another computer. If you get to this point, you can download software from the HDD manufactures web site to test and perhaps repair it.

Are you able to use the PC at all or is it just frozen for a few seconds or minutes?
It either sounds like a issue where too many programs are trying to run at once (at start up), a dying hard drive or something might be up with the monitor itself.

I keep trying to reformat, but it keeps getting stuck on different area's... This time it's stopped on 66%... I tried doing quick format but it still froze. The CD is fine... its perfectly clean. Once when I booted it up the screen was like scrambled. It was the blue and black lines from the windows XP pro setup window just randomly placed around the screen... Whats going on and why am I thinking this is going to cost money to fix.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M70 SR3. It was in hibernation mode with the lid closed and the battery charger plugged in. Normally, when I open the lid, it's supposed to automatically start up Windows again. But this time, all I get is a black screen. I can't do anything, not even shut down the laptop. The only thing I can tell that's happening is that the fan is running like crazy and the laptop is getting kinda hot. This is about the third time this has happened in the 6 months I've had this laptop. The previous two times, I just waited for the battery to die and everything was back to normal when I started the laptop up again.

Please, does anyone know what is causing this and what I can do to shut down the laptop?

I have Windows XP Home if that means anything.

Hello

I got a lot of process running at the same time. Also a lot of graphic processing also. For the second time in 2 days, my PC just froze. To get out, I need to press the reset button. I was not able to use the CTRL ALT DEL to close an application.

I'm looking for what could cause that. Maybe a log file could guide me

My board: Asus P5B
Processor: Intel Q6600 quad
Windows 7 64
Ram: 6 GB
Disk: SSD 120G
Graphic Card: Asus EAH 4870 with 1 GB memory

Also, sometime, the viseo card is not fast enough and moving the mouse over one of my application is slow. If I drag the window over another screen driven by a USB graphic monitor, then the mousse move easily without a slow motion

Any help appreciated

Answer:Computer froze

Taking a hard drive from one pc and putting into another will not normally work ( unless they are identical) as windows will not recognised the hardware.
A hard drive clicking is not a good sign as that indicates it is about to die.
I suggest you hook up the drive as a slave in another pc and try and save the data, then get a new drive and reinstall windows.
Also I can't stress highly enough about getting rid of Norton, its a resource hog and eventually slows the pc down.
Home users should not have to pay for ativirus, I use Avast on all my pc's and have never had any problems

Answer:Computer froze

The clicks you heard may have been a hard drive failing or maybe a pw supply arcing. Let's do some troubleshooting [as long as you are comfortable opening the case]

1 System OFF, open the case and pull the connectors [both data and power] from ALL drive both hd and optical
2 Disconnect any usb type device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc
3 While in the case, check the heatsink fan on top of the cpu. Make sure it has not fallen off/loose, etc
4 If you are all done, now pw ON the system and see if you get a post display

If you do get a display, then shutdown and start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed device. If you do not get a post display, then the next thing I would do would be to swap in a known good pw supply. Still no post with the known good pw supply, then you would need to swap parts with known good units; ie video card, mb, ram, cpu.

I was directed to run Combofix by a spywareinfoforum helper however it froze at the point it indicated "Do not manually reboot the machine yourself". Thereafter it listed "2. was unexpected at this time". It is now idle on the blue c:\ prompt screen and I do not know how to resolve this.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:combofix froze

If you were advised to run ComboFix by a trained expert at another security forum then you need to contact that person for assistance. That Helper should be able to address any issues you encountered when running the tool as they should have the knowledge and resources to do so. Further, following advice outside of a topic where you are already receiving assistance may cause confusion and could complicate the malware removal process or make things worst which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

Hey,my names Jovana I have a problem with my scanner,it was working without problems until today.I tried to scan some images and as I was walking past the table where the scanner was I accidentally  tripped over the scanner's power supply cable and the scanner froze. When I turned if off completely, removed it from the usb too and put it back in,it's still frozen and whenever I put in the supply cable it's just there freezing and making a weird and quite noisy sound...I don't know what to do now,can I reset it somehow? It doesn't seem to be communicating with the computer at all...the scanner is a Hewlet Packard Scanjet 3800,it's almost new....can somebody help me out or suggest what to do next please?

Answer:Scanner froze?!

Quote...can somebody help me out or suggest what to do next please? It could be physically damaged.    It could be a lot of different things. Here's one easy thing to check:   On the underside of some scanners, there is a sliding latch.   It is for locking the mechanism from motion,  when the scanner is being shipped.Check it -  see if by some wild chance it is now in the locked position.I doubt it is something that simple and easy,  but it won't cost you anything to have a look.

Hi, I have a gaming PC that I built about two years ago. I was playing Minecraft (CPU and memory intensive) and the computer froze and wouldn't respond to anything including ctrl + alt + del. Its never done this before so I held down the power button to turn it off but now it won't turn on again. When I press the power button nothing happens, but when I turn the power supply switch off and on and press the power button, the fans will spin and lights will come on for half a second then turn off. I thought maybe the CPU had overheated but after waiting a while it still didn't turn on. I also tried clearing the CMOS and cutting the power, neither changed anything. The motherboard standby light is on.

I searched around and I think it might be a bad power supply, any ideas? Thanks

I am using Windows XP home O/S. All of a sudden I found the PC just froze/crashed on me. I did a reboot and it came up with a blue screen which refered to an 'unmountable boot volume' It goes onto to say if this the first time etc;;; to much to follow. I either try 'Last Known Good configuration' but would not work it would not even start in Safe Mode which it recommends.I pressed F8 as followed then Safe Mode but no joy, just pressed F8 next time and a screen comes up to ask me to disable shadowing and cache but can't find where to do this. :-(((((RegardsSimac

Twice while working in IE 11 I have had my mouse pointer freeze. The keyboard and mouse buttons are still active but I cannot move around. I logout via Task manager and usually after the 2nd time logging back it its active again.

My drivers and BIOS are current, so there is nothing more from download and nothing in settings affects it ability to move around. Is or has anyone else experience this problem?

start/control panel/administrative tools/event viewer/application

Scroll down for the most recent or most recent two red circles with a red X in it and click to open that listing.

If your movie maker program is listed in that window that opens just click on the button that is just below the two arrow buttons and that will put information on the clipboard paste that info here.

Hello, I have been using a HP 15-ay013nr laptop since September, about 3 months now. I haven't had any serious issues with it so far; however, today I was just using Chrome and it froze up on me. Not just the browser, but the mouse, and nothing was responsive. I also noticed that the hard drive light indicator on the side of the laptop wasn't flashing like it does during use (although my laptop has a SSD). I tried to shut down the laptop by holding down the power button, but it wouldn't go off. The laptop has a removable battery, so I took it out, let it sit for a few minutes, put it back in, and turned the laptop back on. I was met with a blank screen for a few seconds, and then it started up as normal. This same thing happened just a few weeks ago, and I figured it was just a freak thing. I took the same steps before as I did just now. I did run a memory test last time, and everything turned out normal. my antivirus doesn't detect anything wrong, either. I don't use super heavy processes other than chrome and photoshop, and my laptop doesn't get too hot. I was just wondering, should I be concerned about this? Also, what steps should I take to keep this from happening again? Here is some basic info about my laptop in case it's needed:

Question: Froze at Boot

I'm new to this forum but hopefully someone will know the answer to my problem. I just got this hard drive from a friend and they want me to take some stuff off of it for them so they can put it on a different computer. However, I tryed to add it as a secondary hard drive but because he has a password on his account I can't get into his documents without starting up the computer using his hard drive. So when I try that a message comes up saying that it did not successfully load windows last time do u want to boot in safe mode or normal mode or last known good configuration. Now when i pick any of them they begin to load and then it just freezes before it can even get into windows. Now I have they're password so if there is any way to do this using it as a secondary drive please let me know. However if there's not please tell me any ideas anyone may have to my problem. I know this hard drive is working because it was working when I pulled it out, I had the computer on and running right before I pulled it earlier today. Thanks again

Question: computer froze

bought the refurbished HP 8100 Elite from amazon. worked great for 3 weeks then a message screen started coming on , instead of the normal start screen. I'm a 70 year old novice, so i found by hitting F10 i could get the start screen to come up. but when i shut it down and restarted the next day, i had to do it all over again. after 3 days of this and pushing some other F keys it finally quit and when turned on the message screen was froze. i contacted amazon, who refered me to SJ Computers, that had refirbished it. they were almost no help, but would allow a refund. I have since bought a new computer that is fine. my problem is since i'm a novice , i dont feel safe returning it since i used it for my banking and some personal info. how likely is someone else going to be able to recover my info. if it is unwise to send it back as is, any tips on how to get it running and erase my stuff?    thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Answer:computer froze

@billllib, welcome to the forum. As an old_geekster myself, I will be glad to help you. Your best option is to remove the hard drive from the computer and connect it to another computer to format it to remove your personal information.  This will be far easier than trying to get the computer to run.  If you are not comfortable working on a computer, I suggest asking one of your friends who is competent to help you.  If nothing else, there are students at local schools who could help you and would be glad to do it. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Question: mouse froze

I am running this windows xp serv pack2 with amd 64-3000 and 1gb memory with 300 gb hard drive. got microsoft office, acrobat, adaware, spyware doctor, quicken, nero, systemsuite installed, it was fine before but all of sudden, the mouse froze and I can
not move it. I saw the pointing arrow but can't click anywhere. I did try to change the mouse to a new one and it froze too. For example, I am running system suite to check the drive and usually I can click on desktop or minimize the screen or cancel but I cannot move anywhere. The keyboard works, i can shut down with the keyboard.

What's wrong? Is it the mouse port on the mother board or I need more memory?

Hi All, could someone help me?

My PC (4.5 years old, used everday, a bit slow these days, running Win XP home) froze yesterday when loading a website that had a lot of multimedia content and I could not even move the cursor, so I switched it off at the plug and tried to reboot, but now when I turn it on, it does not boot.

When I press the 'ON' button, the LED light comes on (but no beep sound) and I can hear the fan come on but that's it. There is no signal going to the monitor at all and I can't hear any sounds of anything happening inside the box.

I recently backed up most of the key documents I have so that's OK, but all my holiday photos I took from travelling around the world last year (a trip that I'd waited to do all my life!) are still on there and I would be absolutely devastated if I've lost them.

Which part could have failed?

The only other relevant thing to mention is that a few weeks ago my Norton said that Malicious code had been detected which came from MsiExec.exe and told me to block the script (recommended) which I did each time this Norton window popped up. However, I had noticed my PC was running my slower since this issue came up. Is this related?

Answer:PC froze and now won't reboot

Make and model? Might be able to get you into safe mode, though I'm somewhat pessismistic, but, in order to save your stuff this is the best starting place.

Post make and model and somebody can give you directions.

Should also test to see if you can access the BIOS at the same time.

If a desktop, next I would open it up, reseat the RAM sticks, and esp. check the HD connections for anything loose. This works just often enough to give it a try.

Failing any successes, you can remove the HD and connect to another computer, unless it was the HD that failed.

Post if you need any help with the above, also.

It was bound to happen sooner or later: Ubuntu, now available, for Windows.

I just find it utterly hilarious, and yes I'm well aware of the underpinnings with Windows 10 allowing this to be a reality, even so seeing it there on the Windows Store page gave me a good laugh for all of oh, about 7.3 seconds I suppose. And yes we knew this was coming sooner or later but it's still giving me some giggles each time I think about it anyway.

Remains to be seen how useful it is for Windows users I suppose, I prefer just running Linux distros in VMs, never had issues with that and since I'll never be using Windows 10 that's how it's gonna get done anyway for me.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete.....If you can open Task Manager you could shut down the game in Processes.
If neither of these work cut the power supply.

Hello

Lately I got problem with my PC. I just can't source what could be the origin of the problem.

I did post a tread
How to know what caused Windows to crash.

Now, I want to be more specific on the information that I could get ( if there is any) from Windows Event Viewer

While I was working, A blue screen with a message that Windows had to close because a device had a failure. No message of the device

- I shot down and reload... same message
- I shot down, replace my SSD with a previous one Same problem
- Remove a data hard disk with my old SSD. System start ok
- Replace the new SSD without data hard disk, system start ok
- Replace the data hard disk with New ssd, system start ok

This is an intermittent problem. I can't source the origin of the problem

- did a defrag on my data disk ( not on the SSD). All ok

I'm looking on the Events Viewer and I see critical error message. But, it is like a foreign language for me
Kernel Power ID 41 (63)

Again, any help trully appreciated

CPU SPEED: 2.0GHz

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS A8N-SLI
MEMORY: Hynix 1024MB PC-3200 DDR400

PSU: Titan Power ATX-SSOPS 450W

I built this computer back in Jan this year. During the first 2 months it seldom freeze during gaming but then afterwards it just freeze randomly during game play. Now, it just hangs about 5 mins after the game loaded and also the music would stop. I play games like WarCraft3 and Final Fantasy XI. I tried updating every single driver on my computer like the lastest Window Updates, BIOS, Chipset, Video Card, Direct X and Soundcard but with no luck at all. Also, formatting the computer just wouldn't fix this issue. At first I suspected that it might be the ram's problem cause A8N-SLI is very picky when it comes to ram. After switching with my friend's DDR 400 Dual Channel 1GHz it did turn out better for a few game plays. Afterwards everything just go down slope. This is really giving me a headache please help me out!

A friend had a PC problem the other day and so did a system restore to try and fix this. Apparantly, the PC then froze while half way through the restore, and after a few hours they gave up and manually powered down the PC to try again.

Now, they get to the windows login screen no problem, but when they select any user to log in, it appears to think for a few seconds, then they get their desktop wallpaper and nothing else. CTRL ALT DEL does nothing, but the mouse can move, so the PC hasn't truly frozen.

Exactly the same happens in save mode.

I am going to have a look later to have a look, but does anyone know of this happening before, or a work around to fix it?

Thanks,
Ed Ludlow

Hi all...I am having a problem with windows XP Pro. I guess it started a couple of days before when AVG detected a trojan and blocked it. Then about two days later it wouldn't boot up after going into hibernation. My wife performed a "CHKDSK/R" to no avail and then I got it to come back up by pressing F8 repeatedly on boot up until I got to a screen that gave two options..."delete restoration data and boot.." or "continue boot". I chose to delete and got it to the desktop screen but AVG was finding a bunch of Trojans. I ran Malwarebytes and it found and got rid of 8 threats but AVG is still picking up anywhere from 4-10 Trojans and only gets rid of half of them, the other half seem to be the exact duplicate but they seem to be in "memory" and it can't get rid of them. I've tried to restore it to a week ago before the problem started but the Trojans are still there...also sometimes the task bar turns white...and then I won't be able to open programs or have internet access until I re-boot...Also something seems to be "scvhost" related as I get that error that it has to close. Also in AVG it is detecting the Trojans there and in "explorer.exe" and "firefox.exe"...hope someone can help and much appreciated...

Answer:XP Pro froze on boot up after hibernation...

Also ran AVG anti-rootkit scan and MBR is infected with "Rootkit.TDSS.TDL4"...

Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive, and then restart the computer. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.Type: chkdsk /rIt's important to have a space before the "/".To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
