missing user accounts in winxp

Question: missing user accounts in winxp

My parents gave me their pc to sort out as they couldn't log on to windows. Tried everything to get it to log on but couldn't even get it to boot into safe mode.Had to boot from the win xp pro cd and ended up installing the os again. Now all seems to be ok but the original user accounts are missing from the log on screen, the only account is the administrator account which I was asked to set up during installation. There was no format of the hard drive and I have noticed that from the administrator account all of the original programs are not available from the start menu.I have looked in the program files folder and the missing programs are still there, also in the docs and settings folder still contains the missing user accounts folders and contents.Anyone got a clue what went wrong and how I can get the user accounts and program short cuts back to original settings please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: missing user accounts in winxp

If you start/control panel/user accounts/a new account you can set up accounts for you parents. I am a little puzzled about what you have actually done so far. When you installed the operating system again did you go for a repair or a new install? During a new install of XP you would have been given the opportunity to set up user accounts. If you manage to set up new user accounts then you can simply drag and drop the files and folders from where they are to the new files and folders. Why or what has gone wriong I have no idea but this should help you get back to normality. Other posters may offer you alternative guidance or comments which may help you further.

Hiii everybody,
this is my first ever post in my first forum . That's a disclaimer to ask you guys to forgive me for having very little gray matter :-( .
I have Windows XP HOME SP2 on Intel Celeron 667 MHz and 192MB RAM. I know it doesn't sound like much so I'm always trying to read forums and tweak my settings. But this time, it ended up worse.
I used a program called autoruns.exe to adjust my startup programs so it'll start faster. I'm not sure what I turned off but now
1. It takes longer to start up,
2. I don't see any accounts (not even admin) in Control Panel - User accounts
3. I can access a directory and open files but I can't cut or copy and paste them into another folder.
4. In services.msc, most of the programs under Local with automatic setting don't start and cannot be started. I can't even see the programs under extended.
5. I have a home network but I can't access any of my other computers.
those are a few of laundry list of challenges with my computer (with me ?)
I'm even ready to format and reinstall XP but I need to copy some files before I do that.
I'm sorry for this long post but can you guys help me?

When I tried to print a new portfolio manager (Money.MSN.com), I got the error message:"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel".
I tried doing this without success. A Program help e-mail answer suggested I try after establishing a new user account. Which I did and it worked after having to set up the new user account.

My question is: why would this be?
I'm the only user of this home computer and as such am the administrator. As
the only user I should not have to have more than one user account.

Any ideas as to where this problem lies?

Hello...
Looking for some in depth info on the managing of user accounts on WinXP Pro. More to the point... going into the "Documents and Settings" area and shifting things around in the "Start Menu" folder for the various users on a system.

A book, a site or someone willing to exchange emails discussing it fully.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure there is a simple answer to this, but for the life of me I cant figure out how to change the name of a User Account on WindowsXP. When I installed windows XP, i forgot to name my user account "Josh" and so it automatically just put it as "Administrator", well I would like to change that. Is this even possible, cause I've never had a problem with windows I couldn't fix, but I cant seem to figure this one out, so I'm assuming I'm either just being a dumbass and overlooking some option, or its just not possible to change the name of a User once the account is created. So what can I do to fix this, if it even is fixable ?
- thanks in advance for any helpful replies

When trying to print a copy of portfolio manager(MSN Money}, I get the following error:
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder option control panel".
I don't understand this about "creating an association".
I'm the only user with access to this home computer.
An e-mail answer from MSN suggested creating a new user account, which I did, having to put in all the new settings, etc.
After this, I can now print the portfolio copy with no problem. However, I don't follow why I should have to have another user account when I'm the only user with access to this computer as administrator.
Does anyone have any clues as to what the issue is that causes this error message or how to create an association in the Folder option control panel?

Answer:user accounts-winxp

There is no association that should be made for printing anything. It sounds like there is already an association in existence that shouldn't be there. When exactly do you receive this message? Is it immediately after clicking on "Print"?

Hi

If I try to access the User Accounts dialogue from System Properties --> Advanced tab --> User Profile Settings button --> User Accounts link, then the User Accounts dialogue that is displayed contains 'gibberish' text.

I.e. it looks like a massive string of hex/script/code with some strings in there. Three IE Script error messages are also displayed.

Run "H:\WINDOWS\system32\nusrmgr.cpl" displays the same corrupt screen.

I can access user accounts from the Control Panel and it displays fine.

I have tried expanding the file from i386 of my WinXP CD, but no change.

Running XPSP2, IE7, Moz2 on a new-ish build machine.

Please advise,

I have user accounts for each family member on a PC running WinXP Home Edition.

We have a single mailbox with an ISP (e.g. mailboxname.domain.com) into which email for all users is directed. On the XP box MSOutlook is set-up with rules in each user account so that as email is downloaded from the mailbox it is filtered by name into the appropriate user Outlook account. (thus: [email protected], [email protected] [email protected]). Fairly basic stuff.

Unfortunately number two daughter decided to change her password and in doing so also took advantage of setting her account to "private". Needless to say this stuffed the Outlook filter rules from directing her email to her Outlook account!

However, even though we reset her account not to be private this did not reverse the access control to her Outlook account and the rules operating in all the other XP user/Outlook accounts to direct email to her on download still do not work because they cannot open the appropriate mail folder(s). Anyone encountered this? Anyone know how we might solve it so that we can revert to the original situation?

I've asked this on various forums and to date have not received a single viable response. Hopefully I'll be more successful here!
TIA

Whilst trying to sort out my nephews laptop i've realised that the main administrator account is not visible when you turn on. I went into "user accounts" but the window is totally blank??

Any idea's how i can see all the different accounts?

CW

Answer:missing user accounts

The Built in Administrator account in XP is only visible if you boot into Safe Mode, unless you decide to make it visible.
Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords2 and press enter. This will show you a list of all the various user accounts on the computer. If you put a check box in Users Must Use a User Name and Password for this computer. You can add an account or change the passwords

Alright, I've recently upgraded my HDD because my old one was dying and running out of space. I copied the whole drive over using EASEUS Partition Master. Afterwards, I rebooted (on the old drive) and expanded the Windows partition (on the new drive). I did not bother to test the installation after this. I had GRUB installed to the boot loader, and I did not (and still do not) believe EASEUS copies the master boot record, so after resizing the partitions, I swapped the drives and installed Windows 7 RC. After that, I went to test XP to check for problems. As you can probably tell from the title, I found one: no user accounts show up. Only the Windows logo is shown. It's shown where it would say "Windows is starting up...," not offset to the left to let the user accounts show up.Here's what I've done. Hello. My mother called with a problem and I don't really know where to start. I'm sure she has some kind of virus or malware, but I can't log in to try to remove it. She rebooted her computer today and when the login screen appeared, her account and the administrator account had disappeared. There is now an account for someone else and it is password protected!! I thought she could reboot in safe mode, but this also requires her to log in and she only gets this random person's account.

Has anyone seen something like this before? Is there a way to log in and delete this new account and restore her account as well as admin? Is there a way to perform a system restore without being logged in? I'm lost.

Thanks.

Use this to clear the password from that account and then log in. I would unplug any network connections as it appears she has been compromised.

I added a networked MFP printer/scanner to a small workgroup running Win XP on 4 workstations. The way this MFP scans is to create a shared folder and give the folder permissions for the MFP to access the folder. One of the requirements for setting up the scan template on the MFP is the need for a username/password. This workstation is not password protected at logon so I added a new user..computer adminstrator.. and created a password. Usng this info I setup the MFP and tested the ability to scan into the folder. This worked just fine (as it has many, many times in the past). The customer used the workstation for the rest of the day, turned it off and came in this am to get some additional work done. Now, the PC is asking for a logon for the user I created, and all other accounts except guest are gone. Again, none of these accounts were passowrd protected. What can I do to fix this issue? Thanks is advance. Ed

You may be able to boot into safe mode and log in to the administrator account from there. It does not normally need a password. Safe mode can usually be activated by pressing F8 repeatedly during boot up at the black screen.

OK, full story. I was meddling a bit with the security settings for my C: partition (where my Windows 7 resides) by right clicking the drive and selecting properties > security. The reason for doing so was because I thought someone had meddled with it first, so I was trying to get it back to the default settings by using the same settings as my other two partitions. It turns out the settings for Authenticated Users for C was different from both the other partitions, so I changed them to reflect the settings from the other two. Later on I found out nobody had tampered with the settings before me (but why then did the security settings for different partition differ? Can someone explain?), so I attempted to revert the settings by using system restore.

After the system restore, my main Admin account was available but the other accounts (there were 3 others) were missing. I tried system restoring back to a few days, didn't solve it. I ended up using system restore a few time (back and forth between a few restore points), before it suddenly turned up again. Why would this happen?

Also, the system restore did not change back my security settings for Authenticated Users. Do you think this will affect anything?

This is my current security settings: (Note the "special permissions" under "write" is unticked)

Hello all,

Today I was installing some programs I typically like to have on my computer that I have not had a chance to do so since I got this new laptop a few months ago.

Short story: I installed Anti-Hacker 13.0
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/anti_hacker.html
http://www.host.890m.com/anti-hacker.html

It's an all-in-one tool. I was attempting to follow the instructions to uninstall it as I found nothing I would use personally.

It said to click "Standard Account" once. Well after 3 coffee's and a 5 hour (at coffee shop studying) I managed to click it twice.
Before I know it, it says it's saving data and needs to reboot. I thought maybe it was uninstalled and just needed to reboot, so I click yes.

Now the issue I have:
I have only 1 user account: Administrator
All my settings/Windows Settings/Personalized stuff is gone
Download Folder is empty
Chrome History/Settings/Bookmarks are gone
Boot Programs/Apps/Services are defaulted

Basically it's like a whole new user account except my Program Files are still the same/there.

No CLUE what this thing did. I read some things to see if I could get the user account back, not sure if I was using just a User Account or Admin Account as it came to me setup and I never made a personal profile.

Under Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts\Manage Accounts

Hi, Working on cleaning an infected machine for a business customer. Ran combofix and removed quite a few infections. I then ran adwcleaner, again lots of registry keys/services,etc found and removed. After rebooting however, I do not get a user account to click on when I reach the Windows 7 welcome screen. If I boot in safe mode, I can logon no problem. Everything looks fine.
This particular machine is running important software for the customer and a reinstall would be very much a last case scenario and a major headache for everyone involved!...

Here's what I've tried so far.

1- Tried creating another user account in safe mode. No luck, it appears to allow me create the account but no accounts appear.
2. Changed how users log on, to prompt for ctrl-alt-del (currently logging on by clicking on the win 7 animal avatar, etc). Once I reboot and press ctrl-alt-del, I am left with the same screen as the previous logon type. Just a blue windows 7 screen, with windows 7 professional at the bottom. Everything looks normal apart from there being no option to log on or select a user account.
3. Tried system restore - no luck.
4.Tried last known good config - no luck.

Next option is an sfc scan. Also running a malwarebytes and eset online scan at the moment which are finding further infections.

Anyone seen similar behavior before??

System is Windows 7 Pro SP1. In a workgroup enviroonment.

Thank you.

Ok so my Mum called me up today. She had turn her computer on this morning after it working fine yesterday to find the login Window only showing the option for "Other user" and that was it.
Normally her account would be the only account on the screen and she would simply eneter her password and be done.
When she called I presumed she had just entered her password wrong too many times and the account had been locked or something.
Upon getting home I entered Windows 7 recovery mode to use the command line the enable the Administrator account so I could get logged in as typing her username manually into the "Other user" dialog along with the account password didn't work.
When prompted to enter a valid user to use the recover mode it was strange as her User was listed here but nowhere else. Entering her username and password here got me into the recovery mode options fine.
First I used net user to see if her user was listed which it was not. (Yet I had just used it to use the command line).
I then used this command to enable the Administrator user:

Code:
net user administrator /active:yes

and set a new password using:

Code:
net user administrator test

I then restarted the computer in safe mode and attempted to login as the Administrator user. Upon typing in the user information I was again greeted with a message saying the Administrator user was still disabled.

On Windows 7 that I am having here I have number of users using it and they have their account as well on it. Well that is not the issue there. Now I have seen that when the user tries to login to the account he can see a message saying that the user profile is not loaded correct manner. After that it just gets the user logged in an account. After seeing the login I have seen that Windows make the loggin for that user in with a temporary profile. Please let me know if there is anything with which you all can help me. I will be really glad to have any help in my case above.

Answer:Windows 7: User Accounts Profile missing

Well let me tell you that you will be able to get the user back but for that you will be required to see for changes in the Registry and then for sure you will be able to have the user profile working in your case and that too without any issues there. You will be required to login as ADMINISTRATOR and then you will be required to make the necessary amendments in the ProfileList. Open up the RUN Window by clicking the Start icon and then clicking on the Run option there. Hi there,

I had a similar situation, although I didn't have to create the Administrator's account...that was still there. All the other accounts I had created didn't show up on the welcome screen. Here's what ultimately fixed it:

I logged in as administrator and went to Computer Management. I checked each of my users and I noticed that none of them were assigned to groups anymore. I assigned each one to the Administrator's group. That brought all of them back to the Welcome screen. If you haven't resolved your issue yet, I hope this is of some help to you!!

OK, so I fear I may have messed up a bit, but I'm hoping the gurus on here will save me...

Previously (until 10 mins ago!) when switching my laptop on I was prompted with the login screen where I could select either the Administrator account or my own personal account.

I decided that I wanted to hide the Administator account and have only my personal account at startup / login, so began searching online for a how-to, and found this:

How to hide the administrator account in Windows - How-To - PC Advisor

Followed it step-by-step to the end and then restarted my laptop. Now when I switch the laptop on I am prompted with a blank Windows username and password login screen.

Now of course this wouldn't be a problem if I had a username or password, but unfortunately I do not and currently have no way of getting back in to my own account.

Please can someone shed some light on this? I would be forever grateful!

Thanks in advance

Having turned on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 I found my user accounts to be missing and was left with an Administrator account. It seems that the system has reverted to a very old restore point. I have tried using the restore points (recent ones are displayed, but I get the 0x80070057 error). My data seems to be intact.

I have Windows and all programs stored on an internal SSD-drive and the data on an internal harddrive. I also have a recent Acronis image on a NAS. I am hoping there might be a way to solve the problem without using the image.

I have tried booting in Safe Mode, but the restore points are still not functioning.

Thank you

EDIT: I remembered that I had used a new USB-stick which would not eject correctly, before turning off the computer. I tried reinserting the USB-stick before restarting the system and... everything went back to normal.

This is great, but even though I am now able to eject the USB-stick correctly, the problem comes back when I restart without the USB-stick.

Answer:User accounts missing, restore points unavailable 0x80070057

Instead of messing with this, just restore the Acronis image. Just make sure you save any data that was created/updated after the image was made.

Hi

Do you see this behavior on your desktop, in win explorer or anywhere else with icons?

There is a repair routine available, but it resets them all to how they were when you first installed XP.

DO you have TweakUI installed from Windows XP Powertoys?

Have you ran any spyware/virus checkups yet?

I would do that in SafeMode just to be sure this isn't security issue.

I've lost/deleted files that one sees under the 'Learn About' options on the User Accounts page, eg
? User accounts

? Switching users

I have a backup to restore files from (don't want to restore whole OS) and another computer to copy files from but don't know their location.

This is what it should look like

but I see the outline of the 'page' with a blank inside.

Welcome to the forums

You could try running SFC.exe and see if that fixes things - it will search, detect and repair any missing/corrupt files.

Just run "sfc /scannow" from the command prompt:

Hi

I'm surprised that nobody else has this problem, but I've searched and can't find an answer...apologies if I've not looked hard enough but I decided to post a question because this is 'urgent' to me.

I had 2 children's accounts in Win 8, and had local Parental Controls. Upgraded OS to Win 10, and now I can't manage Parental Controls in Win 10 locally, so I 'think' I need to set up 'online Profiles' for them.

However, all their game progress, profile settings, etc are on their local profiles - how can I get all this data to be on their online Profiles? I didn't want to copy and paste folders (such as AppData) without knowing that this was a 'safe' way to do this.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Andy

I was recently looking on techguy for a similar resolution to the below question in the forum.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/822354-ccleaner-not-working-when-i.html

I do not have problems using the CC Cleaner in my account (admin) but when I run the cleaner it does not clean Chrome. See, my girl use chrome for her internet browser on her user account and I use Firefox in my admin user account.

IN fact i have this problem in a lot with programs like Tversity, CCleaner and AVG.

Do I have install the program on every User account (hence taking up room on my PC because I am installing the same program twice)?

And when I use virus programs do they sift for infections through all the users etc?

Thanks kindly.

Hi all

I can't find any mention of my problem on this or any other forum. Or at least I don't think I can... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my set-up:
Linksys DSL modem, connected to an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. The modem is configured to be the DHCP server, the Airport is set to bridge mode. I have a new Compaq Presario desktop running Vista Home Basic with a Belkin wireless-G USB dongle. All of this discussion is about wireless, btw - I don't have a long enough CAT-5 cable to connect the Airport and PC.

I have 5 users set up on the PC - 1 true, unlocked administrator account and 4 standard users. When I boot up and connect as any of the 4 standard users they automatically detect and connect to the Airport, and receive IP addresses.

But when I change user to be the administrator the connection drops after a few seconds. The Airport network is visible to Vista, because it is in the list of available networks. But if I try to connect to it it fails, and the Vista diagnostic tool tells me it has been unable to connect 'for unknown reason'. One of the standard users used to have admin rights, and that account had exactly the same problem. If I log in from a boot-up as the administrator I also cannot connect to the network.

If the administrator account has been used and logged out the other users cannot connect to the Airport. I have to re-boot before they can connect again.

I also have a MacBook and a Nokia N95, bo... Read more

Hello

I have been chasing up an answer to this problem for a couple of weeks now and have found a number of people with same symptoms but no answer which works.

When I go to the User Accouns page the dialog box for the "Choose the Account you would like to change" is blank.

I am an administrator and there are 2 accounts on my notebook - windows 7 professional.

I can view the accounts through the run command, but would like to know why the dialog is empty and what the fix is for this.

I have done a scan for errors - none found.

Done a complete reinstall - Accounts still not visible.

Looking on a variety of forums, this appears to have been happening to XP and Vista prior to Windows 7.

However none of the fixes for XP or Vista work (Some don't even apply).

Does anyone have a solution for this bug?

Thanks

Answer:User Accounts / Manage Accounts Blank

Microsoft has an article on this issue, please read this and try the solutions if you haven't already. Oh yeah, welcome to SevenForums.

Granted... It's for XP but I can't seem to find the Win7 version.

Several dialog boxes are blank

EDIT: Here's a fix for the "Windows Features" blank dialog. I figure it might tell you what your problem is as well.

Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to help. Recently, a few strange things have happened with the PC, which first started when I found I couldn't use the Backup & Recovery software in Windows 7. Whenever I clicked on one of the buttons with a shield, nothing would happen at all. I've looked around and just can't find the solution to this. However, today when trying to fix this, I've come across a new user account in the permissions section. The name is jvactaett - I certainly haven't made this! Does anyone have any ideas how this account has got there, and how I can remove it? It doesn't show in user accounts through Control Panel.

I've put a screenshot as well. To get there, I right clicked a hard drive and went to properties, Security, Add, advanced and then clicked Find Now.

I don't know if the two things above are linked or not...
Thanks!

Our genealogy club has a room with a few PCs that members may use to access online databases the club pays for. With Windows 7, members use a flash drive for data transfer between their home PC and a club PC.

If a member had a Microsoft account and could log in to a club PC with that account, OneDrive could be used instead of the (old-fashioned, clunky) flash drive.

But from what I can tell, the Windows 10 club PC would have to have an account already set up, that was connected to the Microsoft account. We'd have to define an account on each PC for each member who wanted to use OneDrive. That doesn't sound like a good idea after all.

Is there any way to use different Microsoft accounts from the same PC user account?

Answer:User accounts and Microsoft accounts

tarascon said:

Yep. Settings, then Accounts, then click on Sign in with a local account instead. That will remove the existing MS login and convert the account to use a local login. Then new person logs in on the local PC account, then goes to Settings, then Accounts, then clicks on something like Sign in a with a Microsoft account instead and converts the local account back to Microsoft login. Then before they sign out, they go back and convert it back to a local account.

You only asked if there was a way - not a practical way.

They can always just use the OneDrive website from Firefox or Edge or Internet Explorer to log into their personal OneDrive cloud. Personally, if it were me, I would rather just use a flash drive.

Win 10 Pro 1607, single user desktop PC. Yesterday, I changed the password on my Windows account. After that, when I booted, Windows prompted me for a password. The thing is, though, that it showed two accounts, let's call them Sam and Sam Jones. Sam Jones is the Administrator account and the one I was using and shows in User Accounts; Sam is an extra one I created awhile back to troubleshoot some operating problems. I would like to delete the Sam account, but I can't find it anywhere except on the startup screen and under netplwiz (and that takes a little trickery). It doesn't show under User Accounts or after switching users or logging off. For the moment, I've bypassed the password login on both. My question is, how do I find and get rid of the Sam account? Thanks,

I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit and I am having problem logging in using my user account. An error flagged "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User Account/Profile cannot be loaded."

The Event Viewer window has these details:

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

DETAIL -

I was able to logged in through Safe Mode but still an error flagged in status bar that the profile was not properly loaded.

Although I was able to copy all data from that user account to a new account, can I still troubleshoot the problem and be able to log in using the old user account? I have all my shortcuts and archives there and "every customized thing".

I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.

Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.

I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured. I would appreciate any thoughts that anyone has this problem.

I'm trying to set-up a PC for a friend with multiple user accounts. This isn't something I've done before. I've set up a series of Limited User accounts for her children, but have come across a couple of problemsI wanted to set up a custom Default User account and followed the instructions given in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 319974 click here;en-us;319974This presented a problem since new user accounts, which adopt the new Default User profile, inherit the location of the copied account?s My Documents and Outlook profile, but don?t have permission to access them. This means that new users can?t use Outlook. The second problem was with Norton AntiSpam, which adds a plug-in to Outlook. However, when a user opens Outlook for the first time, after a different user has been logged in previously, they are given the following error message:Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryRuntime Error!Program: ...\OUTLOOK.EXEabnormal program terminationThe only Solution I have found has been to disable the plug-in and switch off AntiSpam. Symantec haven?t been able to suggest anything else and this seems like it a common problem. Can anyone suggest any solutions to either of these?

I am trying to understand the differences here on things going on here. Still trying to figure out why I had got locked out of my own computer right before Christmas. I'm afraid that I accidently did something wrong to cause it due to my health not doing well and have had things getting worse and causing my memory and confusion problems too. So, I think by trying to fix other things going wrong, like having problems with accounts on websites I use not working right, that I accidently did something to lock myself out of computer. See if I right click on the My Computer icon and then left click on PropertiesIt will say This computer is registered to AmyRThen has all the other information on the computer. Then if I click on the Advanced tab, and then under User Profiles section and then the Settings button it brings up a list that has 3 things listed under the Name column-Account UnknownDell\AdministratorDell\AmyR Then it has a size for all of them- the 1st 2 have 35.4MB and the last one has 981MBThen 2 other columns Type and Status and all say Local and then a Modified column and the 1st one says 5/22/09 the last 2 say 5/24/09The other thing is that AmyR is names I use on some sites I go to for my username. Giving this another try in a different way - not getting further response to my big restore problem. If you want to see original post it is here : http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index....backup-to-reformatted-hd.297121/#post-1942805
After a number of failed attempts to completely restore my backup to a new hard drive, I have wound up with a bit of a mess. On the last try, I found that the computer had finally processed the complete restore but the organization was wildly different from original computer setup. I now have the following user accounts:
Default, Lura, Lura H, LuraAnne & Public. I presume it is normal to have Default and Public but the only user account I purposely set up was LuraAnne and it covers the full backup while Lura and Lura H cover only portions. Lura H was set up as the administrator on one of the restore attempts. I want my original LuraAnne as the only user and as administrator. Can I merge the other 2 Luras or just delete them? I thought that if I can merge them I will avoid the possibility of losing something I need. When I go into Control panel it only shows Lura H and Guest - the others don't show up at all which makes me nervous about deleting Lura H.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I have ever had to do a restore and you may be able to tell it is by the seat of my pants. Do not want to make any more disastrous choices...

Answer:Is It Possible To Merge Multiple User Accounts Into One User?

Hi

Merge sadly no easy way to do this and looks as if you have a little bit of a mess there is the recovery of your backups, could have been due to if I read your other post correctly in having split backups, likely with differing names.

Just to recap what Windows version are you using now, is it Windows 10?

I presume it is normal to have Default and PublicClick to expand...

Yes perfectly normal.

If by merge you want to copy the contents of the C: Users and the contents of the account names content like Lura and Lura H then yes you can do that and any duplicate files will be highlighted for skip or overwrite to your LuraAnne account (do copy the folders as they are eg. Pictures, Music etc), then delete the old accounts from Control Panel > Accounts > Family and other users.

But make a complete backup of your harddrive in one complete image backup file as never know what goes wrong with moving/deleting and copying into account files.

Due to technical issues in the forums and to recover some very important Malware FAQs, the forums had to be restored to a point in time from Sunday morning Sept 15th. Anything posted from that time on has been lost and will need to be reposted. We are very sorry about this, but it was critical to not loose all the important procedures stored in the Malware FAQs Forum.

For additional info on what may have been impacted, see the following thread in the Lounge: Missing Posts, Missing Messages, Missing Accounts

You can post your gripes and questions in this current thread or in the one in the Lounge. While the one in the Lounge is a sticky thread, it is open for posting questions and comments. (Note:No one can post in this thread in the Malware Forum!)

Answer:Missing Posts, Missing Messages, Missing Accounts

Additional note:

For anyone who posted anything yesterday, you may need to repost. You will have to check your threads to see what may be missing. Also anything we posted yesterday is gone too. We are in the process of going thru all threads that appear to be unanswered and working up procedures as necessary to answer the threads. In some cases, you may have already seen our posts or even received and email about them and you may have even added another reply. Since all of this communication from yesterday is lost (and we cannot recall everything we did yesterday), we just have to start at the oldest unanswered threads and work our way back to the current time.

Hello all -- I was reading an article about managing passwords in XP and followed its' instructions.
I went to Start/Run and entered "control userpasswords" at that time the 3 accounts that I have put
on the computer showed, along with another that I did not knowingly authourize or even know about.
The suspicious account is a limited account -- password protected and has the title "ASP.NET Machine A..."
(thats exactly what it says). asp.net seems to be a microsoft sponsored site -- I guess.
My concern is that I have recently had and removed spyware from this pc and I did not knowingly authorize this account nor have I heard of ASP.NET prior to this. I really want to delete this account but I am more courious as to how it got there. I am your everyday home pc user with limited knowledge of much more that the color of my computer. Please advise. Thank you.
Oh yeah -- the ASP account only shows when I go to the start/run and access user accounts that way -- to access user accounts through control panel does not show the asp.net account.
thank you

When in 'User Accounts' an account is deleted with the option to keep the user's files (there is no option simply to temporarily disable an account), the account's folder in 'Documents and Settings' is not removed. And yet the process of creating a new account in the same name creates a new stupid folder in Documents and Settings. In order to avoid the hassle of reconfiguring an equivalent new account, is there any way to restore one whose files still rest in Documents and Settings?

Thanks a lot!

Hi

I'm getting this error message.
I did a google search and found this: You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon
But did not help me. I also did a search here and found a few topics with this error message though they didn't solve my problem either, because mine problem seems to be different.

I can login to existing accounts. But I can't login to new ones.
So when I go to the registry editor there's no folder for the new accounts. They just don't exist at all. Only the existing ones.
I create a new user account at the Users menu in Control panel and they show up at login screen. When I click them, it starts the waiting icon saying "Logging in" then after a few seconds, this error message pops up. I can click OK and then it says "logging off" and goes back to the login screen.
I do have access to an administrator account and a standard account, I can log in to both

I don't have any system restore points before this started happening. i'm using ESET Smart Security as my antivirus but I don't think it's causing the problem, I uninstalled it and it didn't work then either so I reinstalled it back.
Please help me what could be wrong?

Question: User Accounts

I have never created any user accounts on my Windows XP but we have been using the PC for 4 years. My husband and I would now like two separate accounts and I tried to make an account for him by going to the "control panel" and opening "user accounts". The problem is that it told me I have to make a first account and in order to make a second account because I don't have any at this time. When I created a first account then I couldn't find all the things like desktop icons for software and also the content in the files that I've put on my desktop. They were gone and I had like a blank slate desktop with just the standard icons. I didn't have the Quickbooks program or the Quicken program either. So my question is this. Is there a way that what I already have can be just left alone and have it be called by a user name without having to set up everything again like my Outlook express emails, etc and then let me open a new one for my husband?

Question: User Accounts Help

Hello,

I have made a new account, but the desktop and start menu settings are the same as the default - program icons + start menu listings etc.

How do i change the settings to what a want for my account?

thanks

Answer:User Accounts Help

i am a little confused by that question. are you asking if you can change the account settings (icon, password, priveleges) or are you asking about the Appearance (background, screensaver, theme)?

if its the account settings you want to change then follow these steps \/

goto Start, and open Control Panel
-then click on the User Accounts icon
-click on the account at the bottom that you want to change/delete.
-you can then change you account name, password, picture, and account type

if you want to change the appereance and themes follow these steps \/

first right-click on your wallpaper and click Properties
-to change the look of the programs list and open windows, change the theme from the drop-down menu under the Theme tab.
-desktop is where you change wallpaper
-screensaver is where your screensaver is changed
-under the Appearance tab, you can change the fonts, color, and style for open windows and buttons
-the Settings tab is used to change screen resolution
i hope this has helped. if it hasnt please clarify your question to the best of your ability and ill try my best to get you an answer

How can I keep them from coming back.

Thanks

Ram

Answer:User Accounts

You need to delete them from the Administrator's account. For now disable the accounts from the dministrator 's account. If you have a malious program controlling them blocking them may work bette than deleting hem for now. Also set thier accounts type to limited, and restrict them.
Have you run antivirus and antispyware? Do you have a firewall installed.

Question: user accounts

I have 2 user accounts on this system, I have noticed that in the new account the programs are there but when you go to use them it wants to install some. Is this going to use up more space on my drive? What are the down points to having seperate user accounts in XP?

Thanks

Answer:user accounts

I am not 100% certain, but if you install the program under the root (ie c:\Program Files) and not in a users program file list (ie c:\documents and setting\User\Start Meun\Program Files) then it should only take up the space of 1 program.

XP is a pig and takes a lot of space on its own, so the last thing you will want is to let it take up more.

My question to you is this: Is there really a need for Multiple User Accounts on your computer? You may just want to look into a folder locking program to protect those files you don't want others to see. There are plenty of free ones out there to try/ buy and that should serve the same purpose (other than setting i guess).

I have a wife and child at home who use the same desktop as i do (when i get off my laptop), and the secure folder program makes it so they can't get into/ mess with, stuff they a> shouldn't see, and b> shouldn't touch.

Welcome to the Seven Forums, Grouch84.

I suggest that you download an ISO image of W 7 64-bit installation Disk from Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River ? My Digital Life. If your OS is not among the ones listed at this site then you shall have to download and run eicfg Removal Utility to make the ISO universal and then burn it to a DVD to make your own W 7 Installer Disk.

You can then clean install it on your Acer Laptop and activate the OS with the current Product Key that is also stuck on a label on your Laptop's base. Keep all your device drivers (particularly the Network Drivers (Ethernet and Wi-Fi)) handy as a few of them may or may not get installed.

After that you shall be able to do everything that you are not able to do now.

Good luck.

Question: user accounts

I have an account that I would like to delete. Windows Xp will not let me delete this account when I go to Control Panel/User Accounts on my computer. It lets me go through all the steps to delete the account like whether or not I want to save the files, etc but I keep getting a not responding message when I try to delete everything and when I try to just delete the account and save the files to a folder on my desktop. I tried making another account and then deleting it but had no problems at all! Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to get rid of this account or what is going on and why it is doing this??
please & thank you!

Hi
I have recently had my desktop PC rebuilt following a virus attack.
It runs fine again now, but I can't create User Accounts properly ( running Win XP Professional). This is what happens.
Initial user creation will only allow administrator type, although there is a pre-installed admin account.
When I create, a new desktop appears and initialises, but then the screen freezes, leaving me no option but to switch off and reboot. If I create a second, limited account, the same thing happens, but this time I get a yellow triangle with the word "error" and option yes/no. I press yes, the screen remains frozen and I have to switch off again. If I select either user from the welcome screen, desktop freezes. The only way I can use the machine is to delete the limited account, and use the created user (administrator type) - effectively an exposed single user access- not ideal. All creations and deletions I have done logging in as administrator. I can't find anything quite like this in the forum. Any idea? Treat me gently - I'm not very technical.
Many Thanks.

A Guest account is enabled, and appears on the welcome screen.
Could that be causing the problem? Should guests be enabled after users?

Question: User accounts

Hey all,

My sister has 2 pc's connected wireless. She's having trouble connecting to the win 2000 box from the xp box. It prompts for user name and password to access the resources on the 2000 box. I tryed to guide her by phone. She has user account, but wont accept user and pass. Nor default administrator user name. My question is, how can she disable win2000 form asking for user and pass to connect all together? I had un-check the box under user accounts, to " users must enter user and pass at logon".... what am I missing here?

Thanks

Answer:User accounts

The issue here is that the 2K box doesn't have an account with a username/password that matches the one used to logon to the XP box. Create a new account that matches the XP logon on the 2K box, and this prompt should disappear.

Hello. I am a comlete novice but learning - out of necessity to manage this old girl desktop so I can work. No questions asked - this is what i have and need to work with until further notice... I bought it from a friend and had a technician repair it for me. Alot was wrong when I got it back but I have closely follwed alot of posts on this site and managed to fix alot of the problems. Thank you tech guys!!!

Obvioussly - I have a space issue - so everything beside programs is on an extranal drive. I have managed to clear up alot of disk space - now I am looking at the user accounts. If I go into advanced - user settings - I see 3 user accounts - 1 adminitrator, 1 backup and 1 current - info is spread accross them all - but only 1 user account on start up - is that correct? If I run disc clean up - it seems only to clean out one of the accounts? If i go into the doc setting folder - there are lots of doubled up files - in user, default user, my user name and administrator. Can i streamline this and how?

Question: User accounts

Windows 7 Pro x64: I ?had? 2 user accounts. One is me with admin permissions the other is my ?iPad? user. They have different copies of iTunes. It?s easier to keep 2 different devices with different content this way.
Had a major issue with Office last month, ended up having it worked on at a local shop. They almost had to completely reinstall office along with some system work that was causing the errorss.. My problem now is at the logon screen I have 2 users, one is my admin account the other is called ?other user?, which is pass worded ( I am not able access this account.) This account also does not appear in the control panel in theconfigure users section. My iPad user shows up on the control section but does not show up on the logon screen. Should I even attempt to fix this or just start all over? How would I get rid of the ?other user? account that doesn?t show up on the control screen? I?m really frazzled here.
As always, any comments or flames welcome.
Tnx

Question: user accounts 8.1

Ok, I have been giving Windows 8 a good try, but I am having issues, probably with my brain.

I got the laptop used Dell 17), and wanted to just make it MINE. So, I found the proceedure for making me the one and only user, and administrator. Took me a bit, but sure enough, it worked, sort of. No other users now show up; until I go into c:/users. Then, the original guy is still there, and I am not. Of couse, if I go into files and folders, same issue.

But again, under control panel there I am as admin.

So, please set me on the correct path brfore this thing drives me to drink. I feel that I am on the cusp of enlightenment.

Answer:user accounts 8.1

hello ,if the original guy is the owner of all the files /data and you don't need any of it . just go to users in control panel and create a new user[your name ] with admin rights ,reboot computer and log into to you the new user ,and go back to users in control panel and delete the other Guy's user acct ,then you should be the only user.

All user accounts that I set up in XP for different members of my family seem to have vanished! When I check in control panel>user accounts I can see them - but they don't appear when I log on. The only account is my own one. How do I return them?

Also I have noticed recently that when I boot up my PC I get a pop up window asking for my password. To my knowledge I have never set up a password, if I click OK with the password field blank the boot up process continues anyway. Is there a way to disable this message?

Thanks

I have two user accounts on my PC but since installing my wireless adaptor am only able to use one. Unfortunately all of my files are on the other user account, which is a system administrator. I have tried switching user etc but to no avail. How can I find these files, is there any other way to access this user account through a limited account? Thanks for you suggestionsR

Answer:User accounts

You need to logon as an administrator, go to User Accounts and change the type of account you created to give you access as your files were created as Administrator. The other option would be to take control of them but I doubt you new account will allow that.

Answer:user accounts xp pro sp2

I have only one account, me as administrator, and the `Guest` facility is turned off. In common with you, if I boot into `Safe Mode` there is an `Administrator` account showing but I never use it. I believe it is a default that cannot be removed as it has never appeared in the `User Accounts` list in Control Panel. If my belief is wrong I feel certain someone will correct me.

hi when i go into user accounts i have (jim computer administrator) and (guest guest account is offbut when i go into safe mode i have (administrator) and (jim) is this ok thanks Chippy

Answer:user accounts

Yup that's okay, but you should make sure you have a password on the Admin account in Safe Mode, else other users who know about it can change your settings. Once had a kid who somehow got in there and changed the parent's password and promptly forgot it. So make sure you don't forget YOUR password.

For example, my windows 8 local account user name was "John Doe." When I updated to 8.1, I chose to login as [email protected] with John Doe as the user name. In explorer, the expanded file tree shows: Desktop/Homegroup/John Doe; Desktop/John Doe; Desktop/This PC/Windows/Users/John Doe (and Default, Default.migrated, Guest, Public). Maybe I am just having a brain fart. In the tutorial, I see your user account associated with MS is "Shawn Brink." In step 7, you create a new local user acc... Read more

Question: User Accounts

Hi
I have for the first time decided to create and use different user accounts on my XP, and now find that i can't copy and paste between the separate accounts that i have set up, i am using, or i want to use the different accounts for different aspect of a interest that i have, and will need to transfer certain files to other User Accounts, ( i am the User of each account) i thought this would be as simple as Copy and Paste, but it seems not.

so the question is How. !!!!!

Answer:User Accounts

It sounds like the information held in memory is cleared out when one user is logged out. If that is in fact the case, copying and pasting between accounts would be impossible
