Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

Question: Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me 70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. The adviser was quite aggressive saying that I should have this done straight away otherwise I might spread the virus on the internet and my ISP will cut me off.I'd be grateful for views on Norton's stance.

Preferred Solution: Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

Do a quick Google for "Antivirus XP 2008", have a look at the first hit from bleepingcomputer, should be able to sort it yourself.Google is your friend.

A registration is required before the programs can be activated on the local computer system. The activation key will only work for a 14-day period and beta testers are required to download a newer build of the product to receive a new beta subscription key.
Here are some of the new features that have been integrated into Norton Internet Security 2011:

I have Windows 2000 and have been working with Microsoft Online Tech Support to solve some problems. I sent them an MPS Report and they told me they noticed many Norton Internet Security Service service related error messages. They told me to temporarily uninstall the Norton Internet Security program. I did so, and they have now told me to reinstall it. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS. All I see on the Symantec website is "purchase" and if I call them they want to charge me for tech support. Can someone help me? When you reply, please understand that I am computer illiterate.

I just upgraded my Norton Antivirus to the 2006 package for 34.99. I have since discovered that if I had bought Norton Internet Security 2006 I could have had, not only the Antivirus which is on that too, but also Firewall protection and lots of other stuff - for just an extra 15. I'm not impressed. Is there any reason why these 2 packages are on sale at the same time (aside to someone maybe just wanting Antivirus on their computer)? Am I missing something?? Can anybody out there put my mind at rest, or have I been diddled?

Answer:Norton Antivirus 2006 or Norton Internet Security?

The only reason the two products are on sale at the same time is as you say, for people who just want Antivirus protection and don't want to pay more money for products they may already have. I can't really put your mind at rest, but an extra 15 is really not worth it when there are plenty of free security products out there that work just as well.

We need to talk a little bit. You have the Clearsearch browser hijacker on board, so thoise first five entries can be fixed by HJT.

The next three entries are related to Gator. Gator is adware, "phone home" type. It is often installed along with free software. This is often disclosed in the fine print of those softwares. If you delete Gator, the free software will sometimes not work anymore. I would not have Gator on my system, and I am sure that others here would agree with me. However, this is your choice.

Do you recognize the proxy server/over-ride entries. If you do, leave them alone.

Open a new HJT log, check all of the entries that you want fixed, then with all explorer and browser... Read more

Malwarebytes + Avast antivirus vs. Norton antivirus which package is better and why?I often think that Norton has earned reputation by giving world class security in term of various services like Norton antivirus, Identity Theft, Norton identity etc. but i wonder why people recommend me to go for free Avast antivirus free addition + Malwarebytes free addition instead of Norton. Are you able to give me the following answer below---1. Norton has auto protect feature over Avast then why Avast is better?2. should avast be used with Malwarebytes? there will not be any conflict running two antivirus app?3. Reasons why Avast is better than Norton?4. how Malwarebyte is different from any other antivirus scanner.?5. Which package of antivirus + anti malware is better.?I am running Norton antivirus over 3 year till now on my windows 7 pc but today i have run Malwarebytes for the first time on my system and seen the resultthat there were 23 objects detected by Malwarebytes.I am wondering why my latest updated Norton antivirus did not do such job as did by Malwarebytes. I suspects that Norton antivirus does not work well. Please give me suggestions what should i choose?

Answer:Malwarebytes + Avast antivirus vs. Norton antivirus which pakage is better ?

First, one point needs to be clearly stated.  Malwarebytes is not an antivirus program; it is an anti-malware program.  And, Malwarebytes, at least the free version, does not run in the background.  So, that fact that Malwarebytes found undesirable objects does not mean that Norton isn't doing its job well.  Quote i wonder why people recommend me to go for free Avast antivirus free addition + Malwarebytes free addition instead of Norton. Most likely, the reason is simply that they just prefer to avoid paying for antivirus protection if they can get free protection.  And, regarding the use of Malwarebytes free edition with avast, I, like many other users, would use Malwarebytes in combination with any antivirus program.  Again, Malwarebytes is not, per se, an antivirus program; Malwarebytes and other malware detection/removal programs such SuperAnti-Spyware or Spyware Blaster can, and should, be used in conjunction with antivirus software, regardless of what antivirus software you use.  NOTE: Keep in mind free versions of any program are usually limited to personal, i.e. non-business use; using them on computers used for business purposes is a violation of the software license agreement. I have avast Antivirus Free and Malwarebytes free edition on my laptop.  The laptop came with Norton Internet Security and I thought Norton was quite good.  But, when the trial period expired, I elected to remove Norton and install the free vers... I know the Norton one is designed for consumers.
I want to protect a peer-to-peer network of 10 XP computers, and I want to know the difference between buying the Norton 10-pack and the Symantec 10-pack. Apparently, the Symantec version has centralized management. Do the progams still function if a centralized management server is not designated?

Also, is there a place where I can download a trial version of the Symantec version?

hi everyone--

Just wanted to let you know that Norton AntiVirus 12 and Norton Internet Security 5 for Mac are now on sale on the Norton eStore.

You can check out the specific product pages here:

Norton Internet Security: http://us.norton.com/macintosh/internet-security/?

Norton Antivirus: http://us.norton.com/macintosh/antivirus/?

Key features includes:

- Mac OS X 10.7 support, and since only 1 in 6 Mac users are running 10.7, we are including the older versions of NAV and NIS on the disk image as well.

- Updated UI for NAV 12 and NIS 5

- Updated scan engines, tweaks to specific features (more auto-disk scan, for example--we now scan files on external volumes when files are opened)

- Norton Internet Security now includes Norton Safe Web, which supports Firefox 4,5, 6 and 7. Due to signficant changes in Safari 5.1, we have to retool both our phishing protection and Norton Safe Web and are working on a patch to address this. We've also included a Facebook wall scanner, which will scan your Facebook wall for suspicious and malicious URLs.

We are very excited about these products and are looking forward to hearing what you think about them. These new products will provide a strong foundation for us to build on, and includes a new licensing system which will make it much easier to manage your subscriptions and does away with all of the upgrade frustrations users have experienced in the past--basically, if you have a valid suscription, you... Hello,

My Laptop has had Systemworks for 2 years. I know it greatly slows boot up and shut down. If I just install Norton antivirus, will I see a big change in above times? (Systemworks has so many components I never use) Last week I asked for alternatives to Norton that are not "resource intensive". Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

Answer:Norton Antivirus vs Norton Systemworks

I personally don't like any norton products, and I would recommend a free alternatives. A good free firewall is ZoneAlarm, and antivirus AVG.

If you would rather other good tho pay (i personally like these - get the mcafee internet essentials; viruscanner and firewall).

Other software exists.

Hey im pretty new here.. as you all can see

Before I start, wish to say thx to the folks who run this site and keeping it free of course =). I've been using Norton Systemworks 2002 and regularly updating it. But a while back, I've started using System Mechanic 5 Pro and was impressed as it has increased my comp's performance tremendously. System Mechanic do offer an antivirus program but since I've Norton, i thought of not using it.

A week ago, I decided to try the antivirus program in System Mechanic after a friend suggested it was well worth it. It was great and should have made the change a long time ago. But this is where the problem starts... after installing Kaspersky Antivirus (the Antivirus program offered by System Mechanic Pro), I decided to delete Norton Systemworks 2002 completely and rely on System Mechanic, after making the switch and did a full scan on my comp using the new antivirus program, it found 5 viruses in my comp, pretty minor but it gave me a shocked as to why Norton Antivirus couldnt detect it .... hmm.

So then with those viruses removed, and a few registry fixes and cleaning system junk, I've started getting this wierd problem. When i run a few programs like Windows Media Player 10, Gunbound (game) or even surfing websites like hotmail.com and windowsupdate.com ... i get this error box:

Cannot load library for language 'JScript'

Need a new antivirus/security suite soon and see BB has the NAV 2009 for $20, or I could get the full NIS 2009 for $10 at a different site, but with $50 of rebates plus shipping.

Is the NIS 2009 worth it? I am very computer literate and know the difference between phising scams, website that you shouldn't download from, etc.

I hate nothing more than screwing around with rebates, but I will if the value is really there.

Anyone have experience with both of these?

Answer:Norton Antivirus 2009 or Norton Internet Security Suite 2009?

Neither is worth the $$$$$$$$. If you want to buy something go with AVG, NOD32, etc.

AVG also has a free version but whatever you do, don't buy Norton, others will agree

My finger is sore and i am seriously p'd off now.Plse Help

Answer:norton antivirus

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.Download HijackThis from:HijackThis Download SiteSave this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program named hijackthis.exe. When the program opens click on the Config button, then click on the Misc Tools button, and click on the Check for update online button. When it completes checking/applying updates press the back button. Now click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing. To see a tutorial with screenshots on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers, Malware, & Spyware

Question: Norton Antivirus

Hi,

I am adding a computer to our on-line and want to put the Norton's Antivirus and Firewall that I have on that computer. Can I use the same one that I am using on this computer or do I need to get another copy for the other computer?

Answer:Norton Antivirus

Your licensing agreement will say no. Additionally, the software may have programing in it to prevent this from happening, but I don't know. Also, when it comes time to update, you probably will only be able to update one?

So you see, there are a bunch of questions. Besides, you can get a fully licensed version of Systems Works 2003 including both the firewall and antivirus {among others} with a year of updates for $10, so why not splurge? Click here

Anyway, that's my view.

Hi and welcome to TSG.Until one of the experts picks up your thread, you might want to do alittle prep work by using the search function here, using Google and search WWW for "Norton removal tool"
You will need to know the Norton product(anti virus or Norton Suite) and version info.
This will give you some hints about troubles possible when removing Norton.
Do not do anything until a specialist gets back to you, with specific instructions.

I found this in the list of programs that don't work properly unnder SP2.

Norton AntiVirus
2003
Symantec 32-bit and 64-bit (NX)

At system startup, Scheduled Tasks in Norton AntiVirus 2003 does not automatically scan.

I have Norton Antivirus 2002. Is there anyway to find out if I'd experience these problems also?

Answer:Norton Antivirus and SP2

Symantec has already began releasing patches, as I'm sure will all the other vendors whos apps were "broken" by SP2.

ok, so I have an acer aspire 7520, which I installed norton antivirus on about a year ago. it's had relatively few problems untill about the last month and a half when it has developed a problem where it will just suddenly spaz out and the screen goes all funny and patterned and it has to be restarted. this started off happening once or twice infrequently and now seems to be just about daily. I have run virus scans which come up negative, and the only thing I can see as the explanation is that when I went to the norton antivirus center it said that my "intrusion prevention" is turned off so that I am liable to attacks from the internet. I tried clicking "fix now" and it didn't work. I tried going to options and settings and everything and turning it on and nothing will work. does anyone know how I can turn on the intrusion prevention?! thank you to anyone who can help!

When I click skip it tells me that certain programs may not work.
I also use Firefox, if I get rid of the Norton toolbar will everything still work, (be forewarned) I am not getting rid of Firefox.

The first thing that jumped out at me is when you go to add/remove programs Norton Internet Security is listed and last used 3/13/07. Then there's also Symantec Endpoint Protection last used 5/25/09. Shouldn't she just have one of these and not both? Or does it matter? Thanks!AManda

Nortan itselt is made up of lots of programs - that's why it slows the PC so much.If you want to uninstall it, see here: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039/There are many free anti-virus programs out there which are far superior.

Question: Norton AntiVirus

I've just ordered a new laptop. Nortons Antivirus is pre-loaded. After reading so much adverse comments about Nortons (and how difficult it is to remove) I'd appreciate your thoughts about removong before ever using. Is their a tool that will remove 100% of Norton - like Add/Remove does for well written software. I'd then install my favourite Avast 4Home.

Answer:Norton AntiVirus

If you're lucky, preloaded means they've just put the installation .exe on the hard drive and not pre installed it, dumping it will then be easy. If not go to the Symantec website as they have a variety of Rnav tools to tidy up the deletion of various Norton AV packages.

Recently it was discovered that the script blocking part of Norton antivirus stopped working after obtaining recent updates dated
11-28-01 or 12-06-01. Another member Nix spent a great deal of time uncovering the problem and alerting Symantic to the file that was in question. If you have done recent updates downloading antivirus definitions you need to read the sister thread listed below, run the test on your system and then contact
Symantic for the fix. The problem is with all systems using NAV with dates listed for definitions. I have four out of four systems with same problem.
I suspect the new downloads dated today or later have the fix in them but may not correct the files already downloaded.
Here is Nix's original thread.

Help. I would like to re-install my Norton antivirus on this computer but the problem I'm faced with is I can't find the install disc. I do have the product key from original purchase. any suggestions?

Answer:Norton antivirus

Hello sketchball,Your best bet would be to contact Symantec. I think you could download the appropriate product from their website and register it with your key. That said, as I stated before, because you have a HiJack This topic posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/259860/malware-removal/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Question: Norton Antivirus

Okay, Yes I know it is the devil, but it was free, I will be uninstalling it for AVG Antivirus once the sub goes out, and I am just asking this one question:

I know that when you install it it asks you to disable the firewall in favor or Norton as well as the virus warnings from Windows, is there a way to undo this, or since AVG will have all of the above do not worry about it. Also, according to security center the firewall is up and running.

Any help?

Thanks guys.

Answer:Norton Antivirus

You are going to use Norton? Even if it's free, it's not worth it. I didn't pay for mine, and i dont touch it.

You can just turn the Norton firewall off and enable another firewall if you don't like it.

Yesterday I noticed that my antiviral program hadn't run lately, so I checked and found that the auto-detect feature for email had become permanently disabled- it said that it was missing a file. I scanned for viruses, found none, tried to run a Liveupdate, but found that this feature would not work now (Norton Systemworks 2003). Out of desparation I uninstalled systemworks and reinstalled it, only to find that it would not install Norton Antivirus now- it kept saying that it detected Ghost on the system and would not install over this program, but the only thing not to install from the package was the Antivirus! I then bought Norton Antivirus 2004, scanned the system from the CD, installed it successfully, even did a liveupdate, but the Virus Scan will not run- not from Windows XP, not from DOS, I can't even scan from Norton's website online, even though the software is compatible (Win XP, IE 6, it says my system won't allow ActiveX controls although I followed there directions to permit access). I downloaded and ran several virus removal tools from Symantec, (FixBugbear, fixklen and fixgoner, I believe) but each one said "No virus found" afterwards. To top it off, the Search feature from my Start button is now malfuntioning (the doggie search companion appears, but there is no box above him where I can enter data to locate files) and my webbased email account no longer works- it says that I'm blocking their cookies and their ActiveX/Java a... Answer:Norton AntiVirus won't run

Your computer is haunted

Give Adaware a whirl?

Other than that, format/reinstall. Your OS sounds like it's very, very broken. (But that's just my advice.)

Question: Norton AntiVirus

I always disable Norton's Auto-Protect before installing new software, but do you disable it when downloading from the internet? I have XP.

Answer:Norton AntiVirus

I would not disable it at all, it you download somthing from the internet, and it has a virus, then Norton will tell you, and you won't get a virus.

Question: Norton Antivirus

Hi,

I seem to keep getting the problem with Norton Antivirus.

Once it is installed I cannot get online using my AOL account. AOL keeps saying that MCafee Firewall Pro is stopping it but the firewall is allowing all AOL files access to the internet and even when I close the firewall down it keeps happening. I need to get online to activate Norton but it just won't allow me at all, but when I uninstall Norton everything goes back to normal. Why does Norton seem to block AOL?

Answer:Norton Antivirus

What is the full product name, and version?

Are you CERTAIN it doesn't have a firewall component?

My husband recently had a problem with his laptop where suddenly an error message came up saying that "some of his settings had been changed" on his Norton Anti-virus. Every time he would try to run the anti-virus, it would shut down his computer. He has Windows XP. He uninstalled Norton and re-installed it and he is having the same problem. He has tried to contact Symantic but they want to charge $29.99 just to answer his question as to why it is doing this. He can't go online to get a solution because his computer shuts down. Any suggestions?

Answer:Help please regarding Norton Antivirus

Update: He got ahold of Norton and they told him that he would have to get some "documents" from Norton...but when he types them in on the search mode, the documents are unavailable. Has anyone ever heard of this? Should he uninstall Norton and try installing McAffee free download to check for viruses or???? he has uninstalled and reinstalled Norton but it keeps shutting his computer down...thanks so much for any help...

Answer:norton antivirus

Run some online virus scans:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (set this one to "auto-clean")

When those are done, get Hijack This: http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Let it extract to Program Files.

Close out any open browsers
Launch the program
Hit "do a system scan only"
When that finishes, hit "save log"
The log will open in Notepad
Copy & paste that log into this thread

Do not fix anything yet

Question: Norton Antivirus

Hi All,I renewed my subscription to NAV for 2007, about a month ago. Today I uninstalled Norton Systemworks, because apparently one of the last updates was full of bugs and anything I tried to do in the program, except automatically update my virus definitions, locked up the program and I got an error message. The thing was, I rarely used Systemworks anyway and likely didn't need it. I've been hearing about problems with it so it seemed like the best thing to uninstall it.So, my question is, how can I reactivate my recent subscription to NAV now that that component is no longer on my computer? Is it possible I could reinstall just that portion from Systemworks? Thanks for the assistance.Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Norton Antivirus

I have not used SystemWorks in years but from what I recall, when doing the installation there should be an option to perform a custom install. That should allow you to choose and install only NAV. When the CD autostarts use the Browse Folders menu to select the setup.exe file for Norton Antivirus.

Question: Norton antiVirus

I have norton 2005 antivirus installed in our home computer, is there anything elso or anything more that i should have for protection??? thanks

Answer:Norton antiVirus

If the Operating System is XP, you just need to enable the XP firewall. If it's another operating system, I would recommend installing one.

I would also recommend at least one spyware cleaning program such as Ad-Aware SE.

Ad-Aware Home Page
But the best answer depends on who uses the computer and how. Conservative usage habits and good sense will protect you from just about everything, but if you browse untrustworthy sites or do not have exclusive control of the system, you might look into some of the suggestions in this thread. You don't need all of them.

Question: Norton Antivirus

Hi.
Could someone please explain to me,how I can disable Norton Antivirus.I want to download My eTrust I was just waiting untill Norton expired..Can I download My eTrust while Norton is still in my system...Thanks....Rose......

Answer:Norton Antivirus

Rose
If you right click Nortons antiviruses Icon you can select disable there but you should be able to download Computer Associates Setup Program without disabling Norton. After you have Downloaded ETrust and are ready to install then you should remove\uninstall norton from your system. There are removal instructions for each version of Norton antivirus at their site. If you wish our help in locating those instructions let us know what version you are running. There is also a RNav program associated with most Norton uninstalls.
Lastly after Norton is successfully uninstalled restart system and then start the setup for ETrust following their instructions.

My computer is soooooooo slow and from what I have read:

http://ezinearticles.com/?Beware-Of-Norton-Spyware-Removal-Tools---Get-The-Lowdown-on-Norton-Antispyware-Software&id=581523

So if Norton is the Memory HOG problem.... I would like to know what I need to do to switch over. Everyone seems to think AVG is pretty good so I want to give it a try.

Forgive me if I seem overly cautious. I just want to do it right to avoid a problem.

Thanks for your help.

Question: Norton Antivirus

Hi,
I have Norton antivirus 2002, zone alarm, adaware, and spybot.

Do I really need to have all of these if i have the nav2002?

I'm running low on memory and need to uninstall some programs.
Need to know which ones I should keep .

rosepetal

Answer:Norton Antivirus

Spybot and adaware should use no memory if not running unless you are using adwatch. Zone alarm is a firewall which is different than an antivirus, so yes I would recommend you keep it. Norton itself is a pig, but if you have it you might as well keep it.
I say yes keep them all, but that is just my opinion.
