Preferred Solution: Missing Windows security Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There was an Office vulnerability that was fixed with the April patch Tuesday in an Office update, but we've had trouble making sure all users have the updated Office patch as N-Central(our patch management tool) doesn't always list what build/patch Office
is currently running accurately.

We do know all our PCs have the April/May security updates. Is the Office Update combined into the big monthly one?

I have just installed a new motherboard, but as is the case I have lost all the Microsoft security updates. As I am on dial up it?s going to take me ages to download them all from the Microsoft website (Belrac adviser shows there are at least 54 missing). Does anyone know whether its possible to download them from another site put them onto a disk here at work where I?m on broadband, and copy them onto my PC. The Microsoft website doesn't appear to give advice on the matter.

Thanks in advance

The best way to update YOUR PC/Laptop is to use Windows Update. It will scan your PC, as did Belrac adviser, for any critical updates ... if you use the custom button, you will have other updates available.

But yes, you can download & install all critical updates ...

... good luck!

I am helping a friend get her computer up to date.
I installed and ran Belarc advisor and found 5 missing security updates. I was able to find and install one of them,  a CAPICOM windows update.
However, I would like help with the other four. Her computer is WIndows XP sp3. She has Windows Explorer 8.
 EOL Adobe reader
CPU Jan 2015 1972971 for Java 32 bit
CPA Jan 2015 1972971 for Java 6.0.320.5 32 bit
KB2538243 Windows update
Belarc says the first is an End of Life and there is no update from provider. Not sure what one is supposed to do. Next two are listed as critical, the fourth one is listed as important.,
Any help or advice is appreciated. I am not all that versed in computers so feel free to be fairly basic in your reply.
Thank you!
By the way I am writing this on her computer.

Answer:finding and inserting missing security updates

Hello there,I have never heard of Belarc Advisor - my choice is Secunia Personal Software Inspector which will analyze your machine for outdated software and assist you in updating them. For Windows updates, you can use the in-built Windows Update function to find out if there are any updates left. Since support for Windows XP has ceased, there aren't any more new updates issued for that OS.If you need me to clarify anything, do not hesitate to do so.Alex

I was using Avira Antivirus and PC Tools Firewall when the Microsoft XP security updates came through today. Ever since I restarted my system after those updates, all my tray icons are slow to appear (including the network connection icon and its message that it's been established), but the Avira and PC Tools Firewall icons don't show at all on cold boot or warm boot. I was going to uninstall and reinstall both programs to see if that helped, but I decided to go with Panda Cloud Antivirus after seeing that was the pick of your list of AV programs.

When I uninstalled and reinstalled PC Tools Firewall, the tray icon appeared...until I restarted after uninstalling Avira. Upon restart, the firewall icon was again gone. When I installed Panda Cloud Antivirus, its tray icon appeared and has remained in the tray on all reboots.

I saw upon startup listed in task manager the process "WGAtray.exe," which I have read via Google search can't be shut down without losing MS updates. I have never seen that on the process list previously, though, so I think that's my problem's culprit.

Do you have any suggestions?

Okay...I just had unresponsive mouse/keyboard as my tower made a lot of processor (I think?) noise. I thought that would stop when I switched from Avira to Panda Cloud.

Now, I'm officially annoyed. Please, help if you can.

WGAtray.exe is Windows Genuine Advantage. It is a legitimate Windows process

This means that they aren't automatically being started.

Have they been disabled?
Are they still fully functional if you were to launch them from the Desktop or Start Menu instead?
Is it possible you have contracted malware?
Note: This has been known to trigger wgatray.exe (even though windows prod key is legit)

Hi all, I have Windows 10 x64 Build 15063.296 (Creator's Update) with all latest updates installed as per WIndows Update. When I run Belarc Advisor, it reports missing critical updates (several KB's). I went thru each of them manually and when trying to install them (with the standalone installer), Windows reports that the update is already installed in my system. So, should I interpret that this is an issue with Belarc and not with Windows Update? Thanks

This happens every night for the past 6 months or so i'm getting tired of it now so i need some help. I've tried Reset Windows Update History that works for a week or so but they eventually come back.

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I read an article that said Windows 10 had 11 updates since the end of July.
Below is the list of updates:
? Aug. 5, CU 1 = KB 3081424
? Aug. 12, CU 2 = KB 3081436
? Aug. 14, CU 3 = KB 3081438
? Aug. 18, CU 4 = KB 3081444
? Aug. 27, CU 5 = KB 3081448
? Sept. 8, CU 6 = KB 3081455
? Sept. 15, CU 6.1 = KB 3095020 (for Russian, Bulgarian, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, and Tajik locale tags)
? Sept. 30, CU 7 = KB 3093266
? Oct. 13, CU 8 = KB 3097617, revised on Oct. 16
? Oct. 20, CU 9 = KB 3105514
? Oct. 29, CU 10 = KB 3105210, which is dated Oct. 27, but wasn't actually released until Oct 29

A review of the updates done on my computer showed that I had 7 updates done.
They are the ones in BLUE color.
I cannot find the 4 updates in RED color on my computer. Do I need these 4 updates, and if so, how do I get them for my computer ?

Thank You Very Much,

Answer:Missing some Windows 10 updates

This is not an answer , but another question that may be helpful to me.
Since the very last update (Oct. 29, CU 10 = KB 3105210, which is dated Oct. 27, but wasn't actually released until Oct 29) on my computer was successful , does that mean that all the updates for Windows 10 (from KB 3081424 up to KB 3105210) have been successfully installed on my computer.
In other words, are ALL the updates for Windows 10 in KB 3105210 ??
Thank You Very Much,

Hi, hopefully someone can help and advise how I overcome this problem.  I successfully registered for windows 10 upgrade which has been downloaded to my PC but I'm not in the position to install the new Windows. However I still want to install the recent windows 7 updates which came in on the 8th September. How can I do this with out installing Windows 10.

Answer:Windows 7 Security Updates

Hello.  I am still on Windows 7 as well.  What I have been doing, with both the August and September "Black Tuesday" Windows updates, was/is go to the Optional Updates section and uncheck Windows 10 update, then I go to the Important updates and check all of the Windows 7 updates and install them.  I have not had any issues.  It has worked both times.
I am hanging off on doing the Windows 10 update for now, waiting for it to become a bit more stable, even though I have "reserved" my copy.
Hope this helps, and have a great day.

Read a Brink thread on IE9 and a question percolated.

Internet Explorer is part of Windows 7 and can't be uninstalled, merely "turned off". I don't use IE and I have it turned off at the earliest possibility.

A few years back, when I used ATI/AMD's control panel's links, IE would run to access the hyperlinks, instead of the default browser. Very disturbing! I have not encountered that scenario since then. Relief!

I did a return-to-factory install in March and according to the update history, Windows Update has not pushed a Security Update for Internet Explorer onto my system.

Is my system relatively secure in regards to the unpatched Internet Explorer that is integral to Windows 7?

Answer:Windows 7 + IE Security Updates

Hello Gigggles,

I would recommend completely updating IE to 9, with all patches, and simply setting another browser as your default. The truth is that windows itself often will use IE, refusing to use all other browsers. This won't hurt anything, it is just how it is set up. No reason to disable IE completely, even from a security standpoint.

The security factor would come into play with the browser you run most of your websites from. Make sure that browser is completely updated at all times, and all important or critical windows updates are installed.

So my suggestion would be, once again, to update everything, and just use the browser you are most comfortable with.

Hello -

I just went to the Windows update page and was told I couldn't access the update because I didn't have administration rights. It suggested I go to my Control Panel, User Accounts and have a look see. It had only two listings: My name under which "computer administrator" was written and Guest which was turned off.

I'm guessing, but this might be happening from when I logged on in the safe mode yesterday and logged on under my name. I was given two options: administrator and my name. Was I suppose to log in as the administrator? Is that why I can't access Windows Updates?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Microsoft Security Updates CD (Free)

"MS have finally announced the release of this CD which will update all version of Windows from Win98. It contains SP1 for XP as an example, as well as many more recent critical updates to about October 2003 - and it is free.
This CD is only available for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

Apparently the UK version is not available from the above url.

The UK version can be ordered from this url however you will need a NET Passport to order it.

According to the web page it also includes trial versions of Antivirus & firewall software for those without those applications

I recommend everybody to order it, especially if you have problems getting to update due to slower connections

I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro...

Somewhere I heard that MS Security Updates for Win 7 Pro must be acquired via
some kind of circuitous method, as opposed to just a direct download--is this true?

I tried to get MS security updates for my authentic copy of Win 7 Pro, and the procedure
just stalled....

Hello Everyone, I am just wondering if anyone knows why my ASUS pc is now having trouble with windows
updates. I do like to keep the pc updated, but every time I download and install a security only update
when I start my machine I always end up with the black screen for a while, and everything runs slow. I cannot find an answer to this. It has been a very reliable pc in the 3 years I have had it, only a few hiccups
because of mistakes I had made. The strange thing is I have a refurbished HP6005 Pro Quad AMD-Phe-2-x4 B95, with windows 7 pro 64 bit, and it has no problems with the updates, but I prefer the ASUS pc, not just
because it starts much quicker, everything runs quicker in it.

My operating system is WIN XP Home(SP2). It is NOT a pirated copy but came already installed in the Medion M3 Composer 4215 PC when I purchased it. I have attempted over the last three days, to download the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) however these downloads failed. The security updates released by MS on Tuesday 13 June were downloaded without problem but again the Genuine Advantage Notification download failed.
Can someone please suggest any way I may overcome this problem. TYI, mchaggis.

For the last couple of weeks I've been trying to get the latest updates from Windows. I got them for my main pc and my daughtere's laptop but this laptop will not download them. It gets to the download page and then just hangs, freezes. I followed the windows troubleshooting guide and it appears to be a problem with 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' not started. Whenever I try to start it a message comes up that says "Window could not start this - refer to service error 2147024894" Does anyone here know how to fix this ? The laptop is a Packard-Bell EasyNote A7718 - OS is Windows XP home with SP-2, connection by BT broadband. I have scanned for virus and spyware and also done a system recovery back to the start except I kept my settings etc.

Can someone point me to resources that talk about how to manage Windows security updates for X number of hosts on a local network?

To be specific, I manage a 30 node private network (XP pro sp3)at my place of business. I have all "autoupdates" turned off on all machines so as not to use up bandwidth in the event a large service pack is made available and all nodes do an update at the same time.

I want to find out if there is a way to manage updates by either downloading the updates to one server and pointing the Desktops to that server, or managing when each individual machine will perform an update from one location.

Answer:Windows Security Updates

<< as not to use up bandwidth in the event a large service pack is made available and all nodes do an update at the same time.>>

Since SPs are rather infrequent...and well-publicized before release...I don't know if I would adopt that line of thought. XP has had 3 in 8 years of availability to the public.

hi guys

It seems that I am missing at least one important security update for Windows 8 pro. I checked with my friend and he said he had a security update that I didn't have. He has windows 8 too. I waited for a few days and my windows update still hasn't received it. Here's the last couple of updates i have received and installed successfully:

Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2690729)
Microsoft Silverlight (KB2668562)
Marvell - LAN - Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
LSI - Network - LSI PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem
Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2753842)

the first one for Microsoft Silverlight was installed the 28th of this month. and the last one the security update for windows 8 was installed the 20th of this month. i'm worried about all this cause i thought these windows updates were installed more timely than this especially since Windows 8 is still relatively new. Can someone offer any advice?

thanks in advice.

Hey wondering on what the best method is for adding missing drivers and Windows 7 Pro updates. This used Laptop came with a fresh install of 7 Pro without any driver or Windows updates. Is the best solution to start off with drivers, or to install windows updates first ?

Also do I let windows try to find the drivers for me ? Or is it better another way ?

Anything I have to look out for? I hope its easy as it sounds. Normally my computers in the past have Factory Settings which include a fresh install with original drivers. I'm sorta new to this type of fix. I only installed graphic drivers in past from scratch.

Any help much appreciated, Thanks in advance...

Answer:Windows 7 driver and updates missing

I would do Windows Updates first and then do manufacturer driver updates after. That way it will prompt you if the manufacturer driver is newer/older.

i've been having some problems with my computer as it suddenly became unbearably slow, so i thought it could be the copy of windows xp, as i've had problems with windows xp before. so i formatted the drive and installed a new copy of windows xp home edition. the problem started when i tried using windows update to download the available updates, some of the available updates downloaded and installed normally, but when i tried to download and install security and critical updates the computer turns off during the install of the first update, when i turn it on and try to update again it says all updates are downloaded and ready for install, and when i try installing again the computer turns off while installing the update, i tried removing the first update from the list, but the same happened again and again. and while typing this in the computer turned off and i did not even try to install any updates, i just got more confused.

For those of us still using Windows XP it might be possible to continue receiving Security Updates. By using a registry hack it is possible to make your computer appear as a POS Terminal (Point of Service/Self Service Supermarket Till).
Obviously adjusting your registry is dangerous and is done at your own risk. Make an Image Backup of your hard drive first! The link below explains how.

I have never seen any issues with Windows updates but about a month ago I got update notifications, installed as usual but after the restart found that I cannot launch any application. I have removed all the latest updates and it helped.

Several days ago I received Windows Update notification again and tried to install it but faced the same issue. I found that these are the security updates that are causing the problems. Here they are: Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2876315), (KB2872339), (KB2876315)

I use Microsoft's automatic updates and it recently dowloaded 6 updates but for some reason they won't install. It runs through them one by one but then just says...failed! after each attempt. I recently had the Google redirect virus that I finally got rid of so I'm not sure if something has been damaged in the process.

Here are the updates that won't install:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2416447)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2418241)
Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB983583)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a problem? Is there a way to fix it. I appreciate any help

Answer:Windows XP security updates won't install

I had the same problem about a month ago. It was suggested that I should uninstall and reinstall all versions of .NET Framework using Add/Remove Programs and the .NET Framework cleanup utility. I uninstalled .NET Framework 3.5 and I decided not to reinstall it as I suspected I might not need it. I have had no problems and no more updates. When I tried to uninstall .NET Framework 2.0, it would not do so because I need the program. So you may need some versions of the program and may not need others depending on whether you have an app that needs it. .NET Framework is a very confusing product.

My HD recently started to sound funny, so I went out and got another one. I did a clean install with the new HD, took the files I wanted off of the old one (only things like docs and pics, no progs), and proceeded to install my version of XP Pro, which is 3 years old. I have all of the original CD's that came with my various components and I used them in the install, than updated as needed. The sound was working fine until I did all of the High Priority updates from Microsoft. Since there were so many of them, and since I didn't want to install them one at a time, I cannot pinpoint which update caused my soundcard to crash. I was getting a problem about "cmicnfg.cpl" or something similar, and didn't find anything here at the time.

I found a link (via Google) about removing the C-Media drivers, deleting reg. keys, etc but the uninstaller in the link is dead. Other people apparently are having trouble with this driver but I have not seen it specifically posted here. I did do the reg key removals as specified in the link and the "cmicnfg'cpl" error message went away.

After the HD install, I took a few days to D/L and install the updates; I did them in 3 groups of roughly 30. I did a system restore each time but to no avail. The sound card worked fine for the first couple of days. I tried removing/reinstalling drivers, I tried uninstalling and letting windows sense the sound card, and everything else I have come across.

Answer:No sound after Windows Security Updates

This confuses me :confused

It doesn't matter whether I get the driver from the Mobo CD or from RealtekClick to expand...

....when you stated earlier....

...a problem about "cmicnfg.cpl"...
...about removing the C-Media drivers, deleting reg. keys, etc...Click to expand...

The file named 'cmicnfg.cpl' is the CMedia control panel program for custom audio settings, and CMedia and RealTek are NOT the same thing. Chances are, the RealTek is the built-in onboard audio adapter, and CMedia is an add-on PCI sound card. You have to determine which of the two you want to use. If you want to use the on-board audio, unplug the power cord, open the case, and remove the PCI sound card, reboot, and install the RealTek audio driver. If you want to use the sound card, go into the system BIOS right when you first power up and find the setting to disable the on-board audio; it is usually listed under Integrated Peripherals or maybe under Advanced BIOS Settings... all BIOSes are different so you may need to poke around a bit, or read the motherboard manual. After disabling the on-board audio in the BIOS, be sure to save your changes when exiting, reboot, and install the drivers for the sound card.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

(If you're not using a sound card, then I'm REALLY confused and you'll need to clear up the situation with the two different audio chips mentioned; CMedia and RealTek AC'97)

Answer:windows service pack 1,security update for windows 7 fail updates

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

I'm running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Build 17063.rs_prerelease.171213-1610. Starting with the last release (I don't know the number. It was the one that I received immediately after that Fall release was official), the Windows Store (Is it called the Microsoft Store, now?) is completely missing. If I try to launch any Windows Store apps, they're missing as well. This includes the calculator and the feedback hub.If I type "calc" into Cortana and click on the "Calculator+HD: Install App" that appears, I get the message: "You'll need a new app to open this: ms-windows-store". If I go into settings:Windows Insider Program and click on the "Give us feedback" link, it says "You'll need a new app to open this: feedback-hub"I thought that perhaps the first preview after the Fall release had the store intentionally absent for updates. I it seems strange that it would still be missing with the latest update and that the Feedback Hub is missing from the Insider's Program.I have tried numerous things that I have found online, including WSReset.exe, without any changes in the problem.

This could be the result of a recent barrage of virus attacks. At any rate the red warning shield icon continues to be visible at the bottom claiming windows updates is turned off, yet when I go to the control panel it is clearly on. When I try to download updates from the microsoft site I keep getting error messages. I decided to look in the services list (run > services.msc) and could not find automatic updates in there. I went into the command window, typed 'net stop wuauserv' and the response I got was 'does not exist as an installed service'. So now what? All other computer operations are functioning normally
I have attached system info as a text document

I recently built a computer with the help of a friend. He has left now, and I am left with some problems. It's running on Windows 7, and it's 64 bit. The problems I am having include the following...
1. Whenever I check for windows updates, it never finishes checking for them
2. I bought and downloaded Witcher 3. It requires GOG Galaxy. GOG Galaxy can't seem to download Visual C++ 2013 or 2015.
I beleive that if the first problem is solved, the second problem will also be solved, but I'm not sure.
Please help

Answer:Windows Updates that don't end and missing Visual C++2013/15

I would recommend looking at this page, wherein one of the forum members created a walkthrough for Win7 updates. I've used it several times, and haven't had a problem.

Hello, The environment is as follows:
Windows 8.1 Pro with certain security updates installed causes an issue for Standard users using VMWare Workstation 8 where the mouse clicks that are meant for a VM, are not registered by the VM every time, sometimes it takes 4 to 5 clicks to register in
the VM and then other times you have to move the mouse outside the VM window and bring it back in for the mouse clicks to register. This issue is not present for Administrator users.
I have already narrowed down one update specifically that causes this issue, by uninstalling all security updates, the problem went away, as I installed one update at a time back on to the system, update KB3087039 triggered the issue, I thought this
was a resolution, to just keep that update off my end users machines, but when I installed the rest of the security updates, excluding that update, the issue returned.
I could uninstall and reinstall and narrow this down further, but my main concern is that one, this may create security issues that these updates are intended to fix, and two, that would create a lot of administrative overhead, especially if more security
updates in the future will cause the issue to return.
I would like for Microsoft to investigate this issue and either fix the problem with these updates or come up with a new update I can deploy that fixes this problem, if such an update already exists, I would greatly appreciate to be pointed in its direction
either by KB number o... Read more

I have tried to resolve using Malwarebytes - nothing was detected.
I have tried to manually update the MS Sec Essentials database - it will not run the update.
Windows Updates won't run as it says the services aren't running - BITS & Windows update services both say they are running under Services.

I also tried the TDSS rootkiller repair - (have attached the log)
This is a DHCP system - there are no manual DNS entries (I have checked).
There are no extranesous entries in the hosts file.

I know I'm infected somewhere & I could really use an expert's help.

My windows security icon in my icon tray is rd with an X in it. My automatic updates are shut off and i can not turn them back on. If i go into Control panel-system-automatic updates it says my updates are turned on. Last time this happened i got a new icon that looked identical to the red shield with an X in it only it would display messages like " you have a virus", "you need to Scan" things like that.
