RS232 serial port not working

Question: RS232 serial port not working

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Preferred Solution: RS232 serial port not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? Does the HP Probook 650 G1 Notebook PC come with a built in RS232 serial port. If not is it an option. If it is not avaiable is there a model with the RS232 port built in or available with an option.

Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out Ģ30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at http://www.softbyte.co.uk/dk7.htm, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations: http://www.softbyte.co.uk/usb_conv.htm

Hi,I'm considering switching out my "old" W500 with the new W520 machine. I now have serial port through my dockingstation, but i have not found any dockings for W520 with serial port out Is there a way to solve this issue, can I use the new W520  with my old W500 docking maybe?

Answer:W520 - I need Serial port (rs232/485) in the machine or docking station?

There are several USB -> RS232 solutions available from different suppliers. You could also use an ExpressCard adapter on the system itself.

I am thinking to use one PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port. The program that i need to use is running under DOS and needs two serial ports. My question is what i need to run the program and the serial port to be recognized by the system. I have a 4200 satellite pro series laptop.

Thank you

Answer:PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

Why on earth should you want that ?
Your laptop has a serial port hasn't it ?

Well for serial ports are standard supported under Windows. In a Dos-box this should be no problem.

But pure Dos could be a problem.
I guess you also need DOS-drivers for your PCMCIA-card...

Hello, so I bought cheap usb to rs232 cable off ebay and been trying to get it working. I tried installing many different drivers from internet and still windows is not recognizing my cable. I tried to copy drive file to system32\drivers, no luck.

Has anyone else had similar problem? Do I need to buy prober cable with driver cd included?

Thank you

You need a Prolific PL2303. Its the ONLY one I've found that will work with my wife's Singer Embroidery machine. It works on both Win 7 and Win 8.

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @ http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

"I dont see integrated peripherils in bios to set"

Thats OK, because these aren't intergrated, and you don't have intergrated peripherals.

"com3 and4 were auto assigned"
Don't quite understand, but I think thats good.

Try another PCI slot. XP should automatically detect the card and automatically assign the correct resources(unless it needs drivers) and they should appear in Device Manager. Is there anything in Device Manager that has an error?

Answer:USB to serial port adapter not working on Windows 8

Welcome to Tech Support Guy

What is the serial device you are trying to connect
What is the make of the USB to serial adapter

The problem is that the processor chip - YES they do have one, is not in many cases compatible with Windows 8, especially 64 bit, as of course the actual working of the adapter is achieved by connection to the USB port and then transmission of data from and to the USB hub.

Not knowing what you actually wish to connect your best first port of call is here to see what is on offer

Answer:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Hi,
Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.
For further troubleshooting, please post back the image for descript more detailed about your issue.

Dear Friends;
We have many software installed in Laptop having WXP for trouble shooting purpose at machines. Communication of many devices is done through RS232. Some time it happen that a we fail to communicate with a device while everything is ok because some other software has already captured RS232 port of Laptop and it is hard for me to find out which software has done that.
Yesterday, after making communication with a PC via two soft wares, I tried to hibernate the PC but it failed to Hibernate as Com port was busy/captured while all the programs were closed. Is there any way to know which program has captured the Com port?

Answer:How do we know which program captured RS232 port??

I have used Portmon with XP 32 bit: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896644.aspx
I am not aware of an equivalent utility though for 64 bit XP.

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. Our application (which has been used many times before successfully) is not sending or receiving message. It appears that another application has grabbed the port.

Does anyone know how to identify which program is controlling a serial port?

Thanks

Answer:Identify program controlling rs232 port

Portmon is a utility that should be able to tell you the name of the process that is accessing the port: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/portmon.mspx

I use it at work as a RS-232/RS-422 protocol analyzer.

If the M4600 can not utilize the docking station ports, it is bye bye to the M4600.

A system we use at work requires us to run gps's to serial ports. On occasion, after rebooting, windows detects the activity on the serial port as a serial mouse....then all hell breaks loose with the mouse....it jumps all over the screen left and right clicking as it pleases! It's actually quit funny...

The way we handle this...is bye killing power to the gps....which instantly calms the pointer down....then going into device manager and disableing the phantom serial mouse. It works....but the problem allways pops up again sooner of later.

I doubt many have had experience with this, but can anyone think of a way to prevent it?

Thanks for the help.

Answer:gps detected as serial mouse on serial/comm port

Check the bios settings to make sure that the Com Port is not set to WAKE-On setting, along with the fact that the serial port is set at Com2.

It also sounds like the Com Port setting in WinXP is set wrong for the Serial port, which I would check.

Need some advice a quick as possible.

Windows XP Pro
ofc had a built in serial port go bad, it was hooked to a charicter generator (don't no how to spell charicter) for a tv channel.
Installed a Controller Card with two serail ports PCI Multi I/O Controller Card, it didn't show up in the device manager was having problems getting the driver to work. says to load driver first then put in the pci card. Anyway it wouldn't work. The port that was built in (that went bad was on com 1) When the new card didn't work I used a usb with a serial adaptor and it went in fine and showed up in the divice manager and it said it was working and it started out on com 3, I no each time you plug the adaptor into a different usb port it goes to a different com port. That isn't a problem cause it would stay in the same port. Anyway device manager said it was working we changed the charicter generator to com 3 but it wouldn't work. We no the cables are good. I then got a PCI Card with one serial port instead of two and installed it and it show right up in the device manager and said it was working and I for get what comport it was on but changed it to com 1. that port didn't work either. Finally brought in another windows xp computer and hooked everhthing to it and it works. The xp computer I brought in had no serial port so used the same usb to serial adaptor that we had used and it work the first time. Show up in the device manager just like on the first comp... Hello Lee

I just can confirm that when you use Advanced port replicator III with Portege M200 several ports are not working. Problem is that Portege M200 does not support these interfaces.

This is a technical limitation and the PS/2 Mouse port, PS/2 Keyboard port, Serial port, i-Link port (Firewire), and DVI port will not be supported when Portege M200 is docked on the Advanced Port Replicator III. :(

have a laptop w/ Vista with no serial port. Purchased a USB to serial adaptor and that works just fine but I have an application that has to be configured to a particular serial port and if you unplug the device and plug it back in or turn off and turn back on after setting the particular port, Vista (and maybe XP as well?) assigns the ports and it is not always the same com port. I then either have to go in through device manager or the application software to change COM port setting.

Is there a way to configure Vista to always assign a port to a particular device?

Question: serial port

Hello. I have a digital camera that must use a serial port. I can not get the comp. to recognize the camera. The software that came with the camera has been successfully installed (or so I'm told). I have two serial ports, one is 9 pin the other is larger. The camera requires the 9 pin connection. The 9 pin is on Com 1 and has the settings IRQ:4 Range:03F8-03FF. I am using a cable modem, and I do not have a dial up modem installed. I have checked the device manager and there are no exclaimation points or "X's" by Com 1. Device manager also reports no conflicts with Com 1. Any suggestions for resolving this problem would be appreciated.

So im going to try to explain this as well as i can.
I am running a windows 7 and I have a radio I would like to program. The main issue is that the program needed to program it is for DOS. So I installed DOS 6.22 On my VMWare virtual machine (VMware Workstation 8.0.0) and ran the program. Now the radio connects with a serial cable. but since I am using my laptop (lenovo ideapad z575) It does not have a Serial port. So I am using a USB to Serial Adapter (Trendnet TU-S9). But DOS will not recognize it.

What I am wanting to do overall is to make my windows 7 computer assume that my USB adapter is a physical Serial port so that I can go into VMware and attach a "physical" serial port to my VM. any Ideas or other suggestion i could try? thanks and sorry for the read.

Answer:USB serial port help

Did the trendnet USB to serial adapter come with drivers? Usually devices like that will. If not you can find them on the website most of the times. You may have to just install the drivers on your machine, and within the VM.

Hi - I am selling a sewing machine that has a serial port on the side but most people use USB sticks these days to transfer embroidery designs into their machines. The convertors I have seen have a male connection whereas I need a female connection. Does anyone know if there is a convertor that has a female connection? Thanks!

Answer:Help with serial to USB port

Hi judysue2, and welcome to TSG.

Are you talking about the USB connector or the 9 pin D-sub serial connector?

There are 9 pin serial cables that come in all combinations of male and female connectors on each end. There are also 9 pin D-sub "gender changer" blocks available.

EDIT: The serial port on your sewing machine is most likely designed to connect to a computer running specific downloading software for the machine. A general purpose serial-to-USB adapter would not have the built-in software needed to read the memory stick and send the data to the machine.

Question: serial port

On an Acer travelmate 518TX serial port I feed signals coming from a DSP. The signal is processed by a charting software that builds up the page line by line.
Happens that the image makes, at regular intervals a small jump to the left. So doing the final page is make up in stripes.
The software manufacturer states that some othe program is interrupting the incoming data stream from serial port, suggesting to disabling the Power Management System. I did it without any result.
My question is:
Can someone address me to what could be devices or software that commonly sample the serial port ? In order to investigate on how to stop this chopping activity.
Thanks for support

Hi, I've got a really weird problem with a serail com port device.First off I know that the actual device, 20 col line display for point of sale machines, is working. I have 2 windows XP machines, one has 1 serial port the other has 4.1. I plug the serial device into Machine 1, and immediately the device screen shows some version info showing that it works.2. I plug the serial device into Machine 2, and nothing happens.I run the following DOS commands on both machinesmode com1:96,n,8,1echo test>com11. On machine 1, the text "test" is displayed on the device2. On machine 2, nothing is displayed.I check the device settings in System->Device manager->Com1 on both machines and made sure they're both exactly the same, and still doesn't work.I'm completely stumped. I have a printer that connects to the serial port that works on both machines, but my line display device only works on 1 of them.Does anyone have any idea why or some config that I may have overlooked ?Thanks.

Answer:Serial COM port help

Trying to test serial devices without the proper tools is a real pain.Standards for the RS-232 interface have be altered over the years. In addition to that, how a device responds can be unprofitable if the handshake lines and not used properly. I am not joking with you. I used to work as a advanced technician many years ago. Serial ports were horrible back then. It is supposed to be better now!If you do not want to spend a lot of time on this, you can get a gadget that resolves serial interface problems with older equipment. But wait. If all the stuff is new, get back to your supplier and throw the problem on him. New equipment should not do this at all.Try your device on as many PCs as you can. If you get mixed results, the cable is not wired properly for the device. Or the device does not conform to current standards. Here is a tutorial. http://www.arcelect.com/rs232.htmI hope this is of some help. Let us know which direction you go with this.EDIT: A quick fix maybe to just use a USB to RS232 adapter.

The problem is I have now got a new laptop without a serial port (this seems to be the thing now!?) and I'm trying to use the USB port instead. My laptop doesn't like this at all!
Is there any way to configure the laptop to make the application think that it is talking to a serial port when it is in fact connected to the USB?
Any pointers anyone?

Question: Serial Port Help

I am trying to connect my fiancee's palm pilot via serial port to my computer running windows XP. I have tried both serial ports on the back of my computer (one has a picture of a monitor and one has a picture of what reminds me of a lego Oh, and these are 9-pin ports I believe). Anyway, I can't get the palm pilot to sync with the computer. After looking at the FAQ section on Palm's website, it sounds like the reason it isn't working is because of conflicting COM/IRQ addresses.

Can someone please tell me the best way to see if there are any COM ports available on my computer and, if there's not, how to free one up? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Serial Port Help

If the plug has a pic of a monitor on it, the socket is probably for the onboard Video. I'm guessing that you are not in the right area for the serial ports?

Question: Serial to USB PORT

Here's a question I had from a relative.

"Many of the new laptops don't have serial ports anymore. I still need a serial port to transfer text from my REALLY old slab laptop. Is there a way to fake a serial connection through a USB port? I'm sure they sell serial-usb adapters. But how do you convince the computer that you've established a serial (terminal) connection?"

Can't he simply buy a USB to Serial port adapter, connect it to the old laptop with the serial port and transfer his data to another computer that has a USB port?

Your help is appreciated as usual.

Anyway, press F10 repeatedly when your computer boots up to enter the BIOS. After you reach the BIOS main menu, see if you can find a menu or setting for Serial Port. It is probably under the menu, Integrated Peripherals, or a menu similar to that. There should be an "Enable/Disable" option.

Answer:USB to serial port

"Trying to change the port is not permitted ie XP won't let." this is true of any operating system. A COM port is a COM port and cannot be change to a USB port. You can view the port and delete it in Device Manager. Right click "My Computer" and select Manage/Device Manager. Double click Ports (COM&LPT) to view the properties of the port/s, here you will also be able to disable the port under Device Usage.

have a HD tuner card that uses the serial port for the IR receiver. It places a icon in the system tray and that is where the infomation for any timed recording is held. I manually put the system into hibernation and 2 minutes before the recording is scheduled to begin the system wakes up (comes out of hibernation) and the program loads and the recording starts. After the recording the program closes and it shuts down the system (or what ever optiuon you choose).

Problem is it's NOT bringing the system out of hibernation any more. It did orginally, but not now. To make a long story shorter, the problem seems to be in the serial port and/or the TCP/IP portion of it since that is how the communicatiuon is handled so I'm told by the vendor of the card. I tried two other programs that will bring the system out of hibernation and the system does respond.

I tried:
Changing O/S's, both 2k & XP
changing Bios versions
reloading the O/S
reloading the program
removing cards
stopping services
checking voltages on the PS
tried two different versions of the s/w for the tuner card

AMD 2100b
Antec True Power 330w
PowerColor 9600Pro
2k w/sp4

Is there any way check or know the serial port information & do SERIAL OUTPUT TEST of my computer to make sure theres no problem without buying a software to test it like GRAHAM utilities OS/2 version...

Answer:serial port problem

Actually, you cannot do a real serial port test without some special hardware (and suitable software). Either some loopback adapter or a special diagnostics device.

For a quick "test", all you have to do is connect to some serial device and see if it works.
Windows comes with a Hyperterminal program that you can use with devices that know how to talk back to you in human-readable form.

How do I add additional serial ports to M90z? Is through a PCI card? Do I get a serial port PCi card? I tried looking at the manual but it doesn't describe how to add one.... sorry not that technically savvy.  I am looking to add a serial port external fax modem due to a particular program that only is compatible with modems using serial ports only.  If anyone can provide a step by step instruction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Answer:M90z- how do I add serial port

easiest way I know is to get a USB to Serial Port Adapter and turn that serial device into a USB access ... The cables are cheaper than adapter cards...DOC N Tc

I'm a support person for a nonprofit that acquires refurb HP business-grade desktops coming off lease. When I rebuild them (Win10 Pro/64-bit) , I frequently have a "PCI Serial Port" error remaining in Device Manager even though I've installed the latest drivers for that model. Quite often I can't get rid of the error, and so I have to place a faulty machine into service.    What's the cause of this error, and how do I correct it? Is the solution a generic patch that I can apply to all HP desktops, or is it specific to each model? And why does HP allow it to occur so frequently?   Thanks.
