Preferred Solution: Get rid of 10GB of unknown stuff on hard disk ?How

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Get rid of 10GB of unknown stuff on hard disk ?How

i assume you mean 25gigs unused space if you add that to folder usage of 15gigs that adds up to 40 gigs or am i reading it wrong...

I've been using dikeeper lite for a while now to defragment my hard drive, other users will know that it provides a key to the symbols used.I noticed today on running diskeeper that there is a huge amount of 'reserved' system space, I haven't noticed this before, the amount of 'reserved' space appears to be bigger than all of my files put together which would be around 14gb.Does anyone know what this reserved space is for?thanksxp proAMD 3200120gb hd1gb ddr 400radeon 9800 pro

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

I turned on my computer the other day and it decided to run a checkdisk. No problems, everything was fine. HOWEVER, the next time I rebooted, it said that there was a computer software problem and the exact error was "load dlls for kernel", please contact your support person for assistance. Now, every time I boot up, I get this error. It doesn't matter how I boot up, (safe mode, last known good config, normal) I get this error. I saw on the web that the fix action was to run the XP install CD and do a repair, so I tried that; BUT...when I run the CD, it says, "unknown disk" where it normally lists my partitions and it won't let me continue past there. If anyone can please help me, it would be HUGELY appreciated as all of my children's photos since birth are on this hard drive!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Answer:Please Help - Hard Disk Unknown

For starters, I'd suggest booting (typically you hold down the Delete key during power up) into your CMOS BIOS and make sure the BIOS sees your drives. Could be somehow the BIOS got corrupted and needs to be re-config'd.

Hope this helps get you going.

Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3.
The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one..
I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4.
Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message.
When i look at it's properties it shows this:

Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station.
Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.

Where does this hard disk come from?
Is it a virus because of a virus?
Why can't I access it?
Is it because of a program I installed?
Do I have to remove it and how?
Please help.

Answer:Unknown new hard disk drive.

Do you have a media player plugged in by any chance? (iPod, Zen, Zune).

That would also show up as a removable drive, BUT, if it was a media player, you would be able to access it.
Mine has done that with my camera also. it would show 2 separate that I can't do anything with, and the other which is where the pictures are stored. If I remember, they are called "removable drive" and "fixed drive.

I guess my first guess would be an external media player. If you have one plugged in, I'd unplug it from the computer and see if that other drive disappears.

I am using windows 8 and I have read previous threads with similar issues that I face but my problem is unique. My 60GB external Hard disk was manufactured by FUJITSU and was taken out of a dell laptop. When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

Answer:External Hard disk not initialized, unknown.

My computer has only about 10GB of space left on my hard drive. I want anyone to help me on what is best recommended internal HHD.

I want to get this for my computer:

I want to know would it be capable for my computer. I want to have a 2nd HDD for storage (another OS with music, movies, etc stored) so basically if my main hard drive fails, I have back up on my 2nd hard drive.

this is pic of my spare space where i want to add the new HDD. Would it fit?

pic of inside my computer. would it be capable with my computer?

IDE hard drive or aSATA hard drive? Which one would be suitable for my computer?

thanks for any advice.

Answer:Got 10GB left on my Hard drive

Looks like you should have room for another hard drive.

Judging from the pics of your motherboard, it doesn't look like it has any SATA ports, so you will have to go with an IDE hard drive - the one you wanna get won't be compatible. Make sure it is set to slave as well when you connect it, the sticker on the hard drive will show you how to do that. You just change a jumper around.

SATA hard drives are faster and the cables you use to connect them make them more convenient, they are too drastically different from IDE, but every other optical and hard drive in your system has IDE connection which adds to my assumption that you don't have SATA support.

Answer:Unknown Virus Filled My Hard Disk With Files

Hello elzosim and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. It is normal for many files to be in C:\Recycler. This is the folder used by the Recycle Bin. Whenever a file is deleted it is moved to the Recycle Bin so that if it was deleted by mistake it can be recovered (undeleted). Unless the Recycle Bin is emptied regularly there will usually be many files in it. They are stored there until the space that is allocated for the Recycle Bin is used up and then it will automatically delete the oldest files first to make room for any newly deleted files. This is normal. You can manually empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking on it and choosing Empty Recycly Bin. Some people do this regularly and some never do it. It is up to you.Cheers.OT

My external (seagate) hard drive can be detected, but it won't show on My Computer. I tried few options however the device is still not being recognised.

It appears in my device manager. I have uninstalled it, plug my hard drive back. It gets detected, but it still won't appear in My Computer.

It also appears in disk management. It's shows as Disk 1 Unknown, Not Initialised and the right column is blank.

I downloaded the MiniTool Partition Wizard and attempted to recover my data. I completed all the steps expect the last step as I can't right click to give the drive a letter.

I have important unbacked information on this device. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Detecting. Disk 1 Unknown.

Hello Liyah,

Your screenshots are two small to be able to read.

For now in Disk Management, see if you area able to right click on the smaller Disk 1 box in the lower pane, and click on an Online or Initialize option in the context menu. Afterwards, make sure the disk has a drive letter.

Disk - Set as Offline or Online

Hope this helps for now,

I have just reinstalled Windows Vista after a serious system failure so have nothing left on my system as everything has been deleted - but after installing updates, it says my 10gb hard drive is completely full. I formatted the drive before installation so I have no idea how the hard drive could possibly be anywhere near full - any suggestions? I have done all the disc cleanup/cc cleaner stuff but to no avail, and have looked for hidden files etc. but just cannot find where the space has gone to. Also hindered by the fact that due to full capacity cannot download any helpful programmes. Any help would be massively appreciated!!

Answer:10GB hard drive is completely full?

10 gig is incredibly small by today's standards. After you install Vista and have a couple of backups, that would pretty much eat up 10 gigs easily. You wouldn't have any room for other programs. You would be much better off going and buying a larger drive.

I hace installed Vista Ultimate 2 days ago and when I 1st installed it
the hard-drive only reported about 8Gb being used...which is about right
then I was went to erase my 512Mb Memory Stick to use on ReadyBoost
and it appeared to be deleting the 1000' of files (Portable Apps) but was taking
a long while and i became suspicious when the hard-drive light was flashing realy
fast... the erasing window kept displaying different amounts left (50Mb, 30Mb etc)
but when I aborted it there was just a 23Kb file left...

I then checked the hard-drive free space and after that incident it reported 13Gb used
(4Gb just appeared from no-where) then today i opened IE7 and the light was flashing
again and this time the drive reports 15Gb used??? so its nearly doubled in 24 hours?
what can be causing this problem...? when i get windows to display all files including
hidden and system files then highlight them all in C:/ the righ-click and choose properties
which tells you how many files is on the drive and how much space they use it reports
11Gb.... so why does Vista actually report 15Gb? and what is causing the HD to jump up
in used size? the only programs i have installed are:-
AOL - Active Virus Shield
Office 2007
Windows Live Messenger

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

I'm new to this forum.

My external hard disk (Seagate) is detected in the task bar after connecting, but not visible in "My Computer".

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Your reply is appreciated !!!!!!!!

Have you tried running the Seagate SeaTools for Windows to diagnose/repair.

Intel d845gvsr operators manual is here. That's about all I can find on this old un-supported board. Reason for this question is that 2 -10gb iDE hard drives is all I have left after both of my 160 gb drives won't run (bad sectors, NTDRL not found ect.) I'm trying to load Vista Hm Prem as the OS but disk space on a single 10 gb is the culprit that's causing problems. Thanks for any help or suggestions on a better way to approach this.Mike

Answer:Can I run 2-10gb IDE hard drives with this Intel D845gvsr mboard

Yes 10gb disk space may not be enough for vista to run smoothly. If you dont have larger disk you may have to think of installing xp. That would be your best option.

This quick new hard disk. So sad I cant access it anymore? why this happen?

You can see from the photo MY computer cant even see this driver anymore, so I check on the
- Disk management it said unknown no driver letter too ,Not initialized.
-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

Hi. I've followed all of your preliminary steps for getting rid of spyware (download apps, run safemode, etc). This did manage to get rid of a lot of stuff that I didn't know was on my computer (thanks). First thing: The "Toolbar" program folder has the TBPS.exe in it. This is why I'm associating this folder with the process in my task manager.

Second thing: When stinger.exe found all the bad files in pc-cillin's quarantine folder, it read "can not repair" after each item, as opposed to "deleted" for files it found elsewhere.

Third thing: The mountain background toolbar has never showed up on my "My Computer" window before, only on Internet Explorer windows. This just happened for the first time while I was writing the last post.

I've been trolling the forums here for a while. Lots of great info but now I actually have an issue where I need some assistance.

When I was booting one day last week I got a nasty BSOD when Windows was trying to load. Then on the next reboot Windows 7 said it couldn't load and needed to do the recovery OS option from the Windows 7 repair on the CD. Well, before trying that I did a cold reboot and it got back into the OS fine so I didn't think much of it. Now, I noticed Ghost shows the C: drive status as "Unavailable" and it can't back it up anymore. It does give me an option to restore from one of my old backups. I'm thinking the MBR got hosed up somehow or something like that. But I'm skeptical to run an MBR repair since I have that 100MB partition on my SSD where my OS resides.

This was about a week ago my Windows 7 started acting up right before the big patch Tuesday. I've been running it for over a year now and it's been solid. When I first set it up I installed it on my SSD (Intel 510 120GB) drive. One of the qualms I had with the install is Windows created a separate boot sector on the disk drive where it stored my boot files. This is known the the "system reserved" operating system files 100MB partition. Apparently the way to avoid this is to use a third party partition tool before doing the windows install. That way it will keep the Boot sector files on the same partition which is how I would of liked it for doing resto... Read more

Hello. I run Windows XP, and I think I got infected when I unwittingly allowed a [possibly] bogus update to Firefox to proceed.

Spybot is completely unable to run.

Every time I click on a Google or other search engine results link I get redirected to an ad site (that has nothing to do with what I searched for), and certain other pages don't open at ALL (getting stuck on Google analytics showing on status line, then nothing else happens).

Have tried several methods shown here (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Rkill, etc.) and nothing has gotten rid of it.

I also use AVG antivirus (free version) but this has no effect.

Sound board is not running... eralier I was able to reload the driver, but it kept going out and now nothing works.

Sometimes the internal wifi device does not run and requires a system reset (nothing else will get it started).

I DO NOT have an XP startup CD; never bothered to make one, and I bought the computer with XP installed; a CD was $100 extra, if I recall correctly.

Last day or two, system says it's run short of RAM and needs to start paging to disk... I recently upgraded RAM and so this is probably the malware at work.

Girlfriend's computer class teacher was going to help me., but his friend with an XP CD is unable to be reached, so that avenue is indefinitely postponed... Alright, so I bought a new portable harddisk, the samsung 3 1tb. However for some reason my pc does detect it, but is not able to run it. it gives me the error that it is an unknown device.

However, i tried the Hdd on several other pcs, and it worked fine, leaving me the conclusion that my pc is at fault. After recommendations from a friend, i tried to find myself some updated drivers for my motherboard, specifically usb drivers. However, my driver CD, aswell as the Asus site did not support my operating system (Windows 7, 64 bit).

So here I am, still unable to resolve this, hoping that any of you might be able to help me out. If you need any additional information, ill provide it asap.

I'm not sure if this forum supports Windows installed on a MacBook,
but I'd appreciate any help provided.

Regarding my laptop, it's a MacBook Pro bought around 2011,
witn Windows 7 x64 installed from my friend's disc.
(Sorry I cannot remember exactly what it was)
"Barely alive" condition.
Works fine, but suddenly shuts down at times, alert shows battery not inserted (UNDETACHABLE on this MacBook model), won't run without power adapter connected, immediately shuts down when inserting USB cable into 1 of the 2 USB ports, won't detect internet connection, and so on and so on......

That aside, it worked fine until last week.

I was running Windows Update when I accidentally insert USB cable into the wrong port and "forced shut down" the laptop.

When rebooted, I get a flash of BSOD and auto-restart, which leads to startup repair.

From there, I ran startup repair a few times, each time I get the successful result yet Windows still won't start.

Then I switched to Mac OS to use it for some urgent stuff.
While in Mac OS I did went around and did "repair disk" and stuff to the bootcamp.

Next I tried searching for solutions through my phone and did this and that on command prompt.
chkdsk bootrec etc etc tried all posted solutions to something similar to my case.

The next thing I realized was that I now cannot even choose "Windows" on boot and I got stuck.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.Any help to solve this problem would be appreciated. ..........Kumpie

Answer:Operating system (unknown) on unknown local disk

Try marking the C partition as active again, using the Windows method in my post here.

Then run Startup Repair from the repair disc. Hopefully it will see your installation.

I am running low on space on my computer and I want to get rid of some stuff.
However, the disk cleanup tools that I've tried will only get rid of 100Mb.
Any suggestions?

Answer:Disk cleanup tools that cleanup more than 10Gb

Have you ran the extended version?

There are other tools, like CCleaner, Wise Disk Cleaner.

You can run this command as admin to cleanup WinSxS files:

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

My computer was infected early December, with what I can only assume was a whole barrage of malware at once. I got stuck with one of those fake "virus scanner" programs that makes itself look like a Windows scanner, but isn't - I could no longer get into safe mode, my virus scanner (NOD23 at the time, I have Kaspersky now) would no longer open, my Gmail address was hacked and could not be retrieved through a password change via my second account (done via another, clean computer), only by reporting my account as compromised. No other accounts were hacked, but at some point scrolling lines of text appeared on the top left side of my screen, that looked sort of like text in a MS Dos program would - white on a black background, but there was no window around it or anything, only black lines with the white text. It only took a few seconds before I saw what looked like IP addresses scroll by, freaked out completely and shut down my computer and disconnected it.I took my computer to the store to have all this removed and fixed. The repair people told me it had not been necessary to format, only to scan and remove a bunch of mal- and spyware. They did not tell me what exactly they removed. When I got my computer back it was still not functioning as well as it had previously, so I scanned it with Kaspersky, which found Virus Doctor on it as well as multiple instances of things called Exploit.js and HEUR:Exploit.js. I also found, when I checked my list of installed progra... Read more

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail  SATA hard drive can be used. I believe this model uses a laptop/mobile hdd.Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).
I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)
Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s
I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.
Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.
Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

I got an error on hard disk...

A hard disk devided to two partitions: (C - for OS Win XP Pro) and (D - 2nd partition).
The problem is, when i start the pc (windows was running but immediately restarted automatically - repeated). I take out the hard disk and installed it as a slave drive to other pc for data recovery before repair/format the problem hard disk.

FYI, the 2nd partition can be accessed and read. But the 1st partition of the hard disk (for OS) appeared this error when i try to open it : "THE DISK STRUCTURE IS CORRUPTED AND UNREADABLE". Is anyone can help me to solve this problem?

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Answer:have Media Center Disk - don't want to lose my stuff.

Not knowing how much you want to save, you can burn it to a cd or transfer to a thumbdrive. You can also slave the hard drive on another computer and transfer it over until you format the drive and transfer back.

PC runs on Windows XP Home SP 2, with latest patches and IE 7.0 and Firefox (latest version). Computer is going to be four yrs old next month. Hard disk C (format NTFS) has a total capacity of 27.94 GB, according to right-clicking on hard disk C and according to Disk Defragmenter. Currently, 15.05 GB are occupied (53% of the hard disk). I have been deleting stuff to free up space and haven't been saving anything particular to the disk - but still I lose .01 GB EVERY DAY (day before yesterday, I had 15.07 GB, yesterday .06, and today 05 GB). Why do I keep on losing space in spite of my emptying the caches of both my browsers (Firefox manually, IE via Disk Cleanup), running Disk Defragmenter and properly deleting old files and programs I no longer need via control panel? Has this something to do with the Temp folder (in the WINDOWS folder)? It is currently more than 51 MB in size, most of the files end in .tmp and are indicated in blue. Only few of them have their names written in black. It looks quite full, with something like 2.500 objects in there.
So: why am I losing .01 GB every day although I'm trying to free up stuff?
PS: I am NOT at all well versed in computer lore.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Hi all,I recently bought a HP DV6-3299eg laptop and it has started to show up a SMART Hard disk error screen whenever the computer is turned on.  Also, when I'm using the machine it pops up warning messages saying there is a problem with the hard drive and i need to back-up. However, when I run the System Diagnostics Quick and Full Hard Disk tests, they pass 100%. Also, when I run the Start-up test, the Memory test is a 100% pass. I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.
A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.
Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.
Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?
Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.
I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

4 gigs for Windows 2000(do i really need Windows 2000 and Windows XP on the same machine)
4 gigs for LInux
8 gigs for miscellaneous.

I have currently got a 160 gig hard drive with Windows XP, i will make it my apps/data drive, just in case something goes wrong with the 20 gig drive, i will still be able to boot using my apps drive.

If i make the second drive my apps drive, do i need to have it in Slave mode, my motherboard has four IDE connections.

Answer:want to partition my hard disk and make it my system hard disk

Wait.... if you had the 160 as the drive with applications on it? Yes, it would be slave (jumpered) if you plan on booting from the 20GB.

My unit is Lenevo 3000 V200My remaining free space on my hard disk is 27.4GB out of 120GBI have few files, Pictures, Music on my computer.I notice every time my computer update and back up it consume more space in my hard disk.I am worried in a few months i will have no more space in my hard disk.  What should i do?Can this be resolve? Can i upgrade my hard disk?

Answer:How to free up hard disk space? or Can i upgrade my hard disk?

The System Restore uses a lot of disk space, if it is in disk C, move it to disk D.Clean up the Temp. files and registry.Defragment your disks.Uninstall unnecessary files.Save your personal files in Disk D. Save downloaded files in Disk D.Do not or install  and uninstall the "Optional" updates. Always perform Disk Cleanup. The above will release some space in Disk C.

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

I think i might have compacted c:\documents and settings\(user name) by accident- i might even have done some sort of decompress thingy as well- not entirely sure...

how can i tell if a file/folder is compacted? i really didn't want this compacted as i think things are being automatically compressed now when they are placed here- and this would basically be everything.

can i restore the folder/files back to their uncompacted state by doing a system restore? and if i can- can i then tell if they are indeed uncompacted? and if i can't use system restore- how can i uncompact them?

- i would really appreciate an answer to what i am sure is an embaressingly simple question!

Hi, I have recently installed a new hard drive after my old version of windows xp stopped booting up (it blue screens for an instant then the pc restarts every time).  I needed more space anyway so the plan was to reinstall windows on the new hard drive then run the old one as a slave with the jumpers on the back.  All went to plan till it came to getting the stuff off the old drive... when I go to click on it in my computer, a message comes up saying "this drive is not formatted. do you want to format it now?"  The answer to this is no, as it has all my web design work and uni work and photos on it... basically all I want on it is the my documents folder.  Anyone got any ideas for how to copy this (perhaps using dos) or just get on to the old drive? Thanks a lot,  pete

Answer:Getting Stuff off a hard drive

So, windows can see the drive and knows it's there but when you select it you're told it needs to be formatted?  Is the broken drive making any strange noises?  What if you use the Windows backup feature and backup the broken drive or even just backup the files you want.

I am wondering if I should do something to create more space on my hard drive. I don't know which statistics are the important ones, so I'm including all of what I found out:

39.99 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
17.44 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

Processor a Main Circuit Board b
2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 2400

Total Physical Memory: 768 MB
Available Physical Memory: 387 MB

My dearly beloved grandaughter has enough itunes on my computer to choke a fat brandleader. When I roughly add up the space that itunes say her itunes files (or folders?) use it's about 3.2 GB.

I have done some of the simple stuff, like the IE maintenance programs and CCleaner, and I am wondering what most of the used space contains. Is there any good way to find out so I can decide if I can get rid of some of it?

And how much might it help to increase the 768 MB physical memory?

And input would be appreciated.

I will try to keep this as brief as possible and yet give you wise and wonderful tech persons all the information you need to help me out. I am intelligent, but NOT a super-user.

I have an e-machines desktop computer. It is old. A Cyrix MII 266 processor with upgraded memory. I have a 10gb Maxtor hard drive which is the issue at hand. I am running Win2000. My home computer (the e-machine desktop) is networked through a router with my printer and my business laptop.

The problem: Win2000 loads and boots. It LOOKS like it's functioning properly. However, it cannot read any of the files on the disk. When I try, it tells me C: is inaccessible. I can't search, explore, etc. The files are "non-existent."

I managed to get Windows to create a backup of it and saved that file to my Laptop. I can only "assume" that it actually backed up ALL the files on the drive so they are safe.

One really ODD thing you should know is that I cannot get into the BIOS. When it boots and usually gives you that second or two to hit [F2] and enter setup ... doesn't do that any more. I sit and hold the F2 key. Nope. I've second-guessed myself and tried the ESC key and the F1 key. I've tried it with and without the CTRL key. Nothing. So I can't even tell the silly thing to boot from the CD instead, load onto my D: backup drive and then kill the C: drive. It's like it's possessed.

Things I've already tried (not necessarily in this order):

Hi everyone! i ordered a new computer last nite. i would like to have everything from my old hard drive on my new hard drive and working correctly if possible. On my current hard drive i have windows vista, a game, and other files i would like to be on my new setup. How could i go about getting all of this on my new hard drive ? ive lost my game disc and dont feel like buying it again since i just dropped money on this computer lol. i still have my vista disc though. thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Help transferring old stuff to new hard drive

you can find a lot of freesoftware able to copy partitions, clone partition and/or drives. But first of all, you have to save your datas. I'm not writing about your game, but about the documents, emails, contacts, passwords, connection settings, pictures, videos. This is usually the first thing to do also if you didn't think about, because after any disaster people remember to have had something very important unsaved and it could be too much late...

After that you can think to clone or to copy your system to another drive. I'm not sure that it is possible at this time with vista but it should be possible.

Okay, so I just cleaned out a computer with basically the same stuff and it worked. But for some reason the its not working on this machine. I followed exact directions to run BFU so I don't need directions on this nor do I need them for L2M. I realize this system is infected with L2M as well. I already ran the l2mdestroyer and it found and removed it but of course it just comes back. My main problem here is the alcanshorty. When running BFU in safe mode from C:\BFU, I load the script and execute it. It runs to about 88% and then just disappears. I tried this a couple times and it does the same thing. When I first ran it, it gave me a runtime error at 88% but now it just disappears. I have run Spysweeper and Ewido but this isn't doing me any good since alcan keeps causing things to come back. There are trojans in the root dir of C: such as defender25, keyboard, drsmartload, MTE3NDI6ODoxNg, newname, and also warebundle which is what keeps installing L2M. I'm no newbie to this stuff but what can anyone do when a special tool that is basically the only way to remove something doesn't work. What can I do? Thanks.

Dear and omnipotent folks,

Since I have a problem with my pc being too full with stuff I recently purchased an external Hard Drive (Iomega hdd 1 thera byte), and wanted to move some things from my computer to that hard drive!

But I sincerely don't know what to move or how!

Which folders are important and can't be moved? Which ones can I just put on the HDD?

And also is there a good program that can do all this moving fancy shmancy or do I have to copy and paste?

Thank you very much folks!

Answer:Moving Stuff from PC to Hard Drive

You certainly don't need to use a special program to do it. Cutting and pasting will work fine, but you are the only one who can really answer your own questions. What is filling up your drive? If it is user data, then create folders on your external for Photos, Music, etc and then copy those files to those folders. You didn't really give us enough to go on, or to even give much of an answer. You can't just cut and paste random folders, as some that are related to Windows and applications won't function once they are moved.

Find out what is filling up your space, and go from there. I'd start with moving my user created data.

I have had a new extra 80 gb hard drive fitted to my PC.I would like that to be my default hard drive and have my existing 40gb drive used for storing the usual junk on.How easy is it to transfer everything over?

Answer:How do I transfer stuff to my new hard drive?

That when installing a new 120GB hard drive, I disconnected the old one and installed everything as new on the new one. You obviously don't want to do this, but I regarded it as an opportunity to get rid of all the guff that had gathered on the old drive.Once I had done this, incidentally the 120GB was partioned into three, I reconnected the old drive as primary slave, and transferred the files I wanted to keep onto the second partition, then formatted the old drive.I'm sure someone can come up with a better suggestion than mine, but it is a thought.Storik

Answer:Hard-drive Upgrade: How To Move Stuff?

Most hard drives come with software that will clone one drive onto another drive. If the software does not comes with the drive you can download it for free from the manufacturer of the hard drive.

You can also install the new drive as a secondary hard drive and continue to use your original drive.

I have a 160gb hard drive in my computer now, and a 40gb HD that is not in use, but also has stuff on it. I ordered a new computer that comes with an 80gb HD. I want to put the new 80gb in the old computer, and the 160 & 40gb in the NEW computer. My question is, will I lose all my data and saved files on the 160 & 40gig hard drives amidst the swap? Or should everything just be the same? The old computer had/has a p4 1.8ghz processor and the new one has a p4 2.8ghz processor. Please let me know what my options are! I want to keep everything thats on the 160gig, it would be okay to wipe out the 40gig (I'll probably do that eventually anyway). Thanks in adv.

Answer:Will hard drive transfer erase my stuff?

It's going to be a bit tricky swapping out the drives without losing any data, since both the 80 & 160 gig drives have operating systems on them that you don't want to lose. How much data do you have on the 160 now? If it's mostly unused, I'd use Partition Magic or similar to partition the drive into 2 partitions, "C" which will still have your operating system and installed programs, and "D" where you can move all your personal files, music, movies etc. I'd then use Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image to make a backup image of BOTH of your C drives, either to CD or if there's enough room, to your new D drive. You do that directly on the box with the 160 installed, then remove that & install it in the new box as a "slave", install Ghost or True Image on that system & save the image to what will now probably be the "E" drive in that box. Be careful that you save the image to the correct partition, and name them so you'll remember which is which. A ghost image captures EVERYTHING from the drive, including root directories and hidden/system files that won't work in simple drag & drop copying. Make sure you've got either the boot floppy disks to perform a restore, or that you can restore from the program CD on both systems before you go any further!

While you're in the new box, format your primary partition on the 160, which you're going to want to be "C&q... Read more

I just received a new hard drive from Dell today (I'm running a Dell XPS M1530, and it has been plagued with hardware problems since the one month limited return warranty expired)

My computer is now running Vista again, and it is stable. However, there are a couple of (large) problems.

1. Most importantly, I do not have ANY Microsoft Office programs. This includes Word and Excel, the only ones that I really use. I can't run Excel programs either.

2. My MediaDirect disk won't install. I used it to reinstall MediaDirect on my old hard drive before it died on Sunday, and it worked then. It says "Initializing...", gets to 4%, then says "Installation errors". I need this for my Fingerprint logins and the nice (albeit sometimes annoying) toolbar at the top of the screen. There are no significant marks on the disk (there's a tiny tiny fingerprint, that's it).

Can someone help me out here? Thanks in advance

I've had this error for a long time on start up and often the laptop will crash. From reading other forums it is likely I need to replace my hard disk/ hard drive. I need guidance on the correct hard disk/drive to replace my existing one.  Thanks Cieran

Answer:Hard disk 1 (301) error, replacement hard disk.

Here's the Service manual: Manual Supports 6.35 cm (2.5 in) hard drives in 9.5 mm (.37 in) and 7.0 mm (.28 in) thicknesses (all hard drives use the same bracket) See p. 105 for "how to" but on this model it is a pretty involved job to open it up and replace the hard drive. Above is a good mechanical hard drive. You have several options which get faster as they get more expensive. You can get a hybrid (sshd) drive or a solid state drive. The performance increase from a solid state drive is something to behold.  We can also walk you through software reinstallation which is easy if you have HP restore disks and still pretty easy if you have Windows 10 on your laptop activated and licensed.  Post back with any more questions.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

If you don`t have a complete backup image, then there`s nothing you can do about it. You`re gonna have to re install windows.

System also runs fine with the exception that when I start up the computer there is a massive delay, then I get the Hard Disk Error, If I just F2 kit and then close and continue, the system finishes to start up.  I think I may be having a firmware issue but HP Assist is installed and all updates are suposed to be running.  Anyone outthere running into a similar issue? I feel like I'm having a false positive since I went up to a Solid State Drive.

Answer:Hard Disk Error but Hard Disk fine

How much capacity, in GB, does the SSD have? Less than 256GB is unlikely to work with the recovery media.

The issue described in this post does not affect the operating system, but more to do with a software issue. Therefore, I apologise if this thread would have been better placed in another section of the forum.

A friend informed me that he ran 'Barts Stuff Test 5' to check is his hard drive for errors, after noticing an error message upon startup stating an a hard drive failure is imminent and now has a virtually full hard drive.

To the best of my knowledge this is caused by the manual allocation of the stress test being set at 3% (those who are familar with this program will understand what I mean by this). However, he did not create an restore points and now wishes to undo this.

Are you aware of any way to do so? - In order to clear space on the hard drive?

Many thanks,

Today, I ordered a larger-capacity hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I don't think I should have a problem switching out the two hard drives. The question is, how can I transfer what I have on the drive I have now to the drive to the drive that I'm going to get? I am thinking that what I will need to do will be to install Windows XP from my Dell discs and then install the a Acronis True Image Home program that I have. Then I will need to install the backed up information that I have from the old hard drive to the new hard drive. Is this correct? Thanks for any and all responses.

I heard a while back on a tv show or something about programs which will reset all the unsused space on your harddrive to either 1s or 0s. basically completely deleting any data that was there that you have previously deleted. Is this possible and if so are there any free software availiable that can do that?

Answer:Is it possibly to completely delete stuff on my hard drive?

Yes.. there's a program called 'nCleaner' that has a free space "shredder". It scans your hard drive for free space, and then shreds it beyond all forms of recovery. You can also use DPwipe... DPwipe will delete a folder or file so completely that it meets Dept. of Defense standards for security. WOW! Both are free, and available here at Major Geeks.
I hope these programs help
