I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

About an hour ago, I got the security suite virus. Before I read any information on how to remove it with rkill and malwarebyte, I did a system restore to a point at which I didn't have this virus. My computer seems to be working fine but is the virus gone? Should I still try to remove with rkill and malwarebyte? I'm afraid to reverse the system restore and try to get rid of it using the guide because of potential problems that I've been reading about (i.e. not getting rid of it, difficulty running rkill and malwarebyte, etc) What should I do?

Hey guys, in the last 12 hours my laptop has had a meltdown. First it wouldn't shut down properly, then it was slow as heck so I ran the usual scans etc and came up empty. I went to do a system restore and it tells me system restore is not running and I can't start it. The bubble pops up for the security suite which has miraculously shut itself off and it 'can't be started.' I've tried in Safe Mode, same thing, now my wireless connection is not seeing my network so I'm plugged in. The Taskbar at the bottom of the screen is like the old windows, including the square start button rather than the round one.

I did a hijackthis log and I'm posting it here in the hopes that someone might be able to help me.

Thanks.

I'm on the verge of formatting and starting over. I've ran scan after scan cleaning out what little things it finds and I'm getting nowhere. I have an appointment which I need my laptop for on Saturday so it looks like I'm left with no choice.

Any last ditch attempts at help would be greatly appreciated!

Office Version:Office 2003
Operating System:Windows 7

After a number of issues regarding my HP OfficeJet 7410 All-In-One problems (absolutely no help from HP by the way)...I decided to try a "System Repair". All went well but did not solve the HP software issues.

So I did a complete "System Restore" from the most recent image prior to the HP issues arising. Everything seemed to go well and the HP issues are resolved (or at least 99%)

But there is one issue with MS Office Word 2003. Upon startup I am getting the following pop-up error:

All other Office 2003 programs seem to be running fine ?
What is this and how can I fix it...tried general office repair but did not effect this ?

I tried both to unchecked them in safe mode...and/or also to remove them in safe mode...But...three of them are reinstalled in Word 2003 on regular start-up ?

ScansoftPDF.dot
ContributeWordUITemplate.dot
PDFCustom.dot

Every time I either uncheck and/or "Remove" the addon...it's back upon restart ?

Answer:Problem with Word 2003 after system repair and system restore ?

Never mind....I found a post from last year in SevenForums that covered this and problem is solved !!

Thanks..anyway....

I have been reading all over the Internet and checking all links but cannot fix my problem. I have Norton Ghost 2003 installed on 1 computer running XP and I want to make a restore CD for another PC running 98se. I pulled the hard drive from the 98 and installed in XP as a slave. I used Norton Ghost 2003 to make a backup of the hard drive writing to a cdr. It will fit on 1 CD. Everything goes well but when I check the restore cd in the 98 computer ghost begins to run but when I click on image file to restore I get "Disk not created with Norton Ghost". I have tried many ways including backing up to a file and then using nero and a ghost boot floppy to make a bootable CD, all with the same result. "Disc not created with Norton Ghost" error again. 10 cds down the drain. Going out to buy 700mb cd-rw to keep trying. What am I doing wrong? I even tried the assigning drive letters but that doesn't work either. Thanks for any help

My laptop is currently running Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I have the Windows Disc from which I have installed this window but now I have installed bunch of Apps and installed Windows Updates. I want to backup all of my Apps, Settings and Updates. If I ever install Windows 10 again I just don't want to install all those updates and apps again (I might not even remember all of the apps I have now) so How can I create a backup now so in the future whenever I want I can just restore back to this point? Should I create a System Image or System Restore (Restore Point) or a Recovery Drive or Backup and Restore (Windows 7) ? I don't know which one is the right for me because I have never done any Backup, Restore or Recovery. Please Help.

I can not install/reinstall or uninstall works suite 2003 or Word 2002. The Windows Installer is not working with it. I would like to know if anyone knows how to safely remove all the entries from the registry or if you know any tricks. I have spent a week trying to figure this out. Dell has not been able to help me with the problem.

Question: Works suite 2003

I normally have works suite 2003 installed in my computer. Well I had to uninstall it for other reasons and when it was OK to reinstall Everything worked except for Windows Word. I keep getting a message "The patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exist and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." Now I know it a valid installer package because I have installed it, twice. I don't understand why everything else installed fine but not Word.
Also how do you remove Ad-aware 6.0? I can't seem to remove it at all. It says "could not open INSTALL.LOG file.

Answer:Works suite 2003

Regarding the Word error, it looks like the Windows Installer file may be corrupt.

A solution may be found here, in the nature of a clean-up program from MS.

Turned the pc of when it had finished installing programmes and then re-started it.The problem had NOT disappeared and I am now wondering if anyone can help me because this is the first time this has happened.

Hello! My prof recently gave a syllabus for our computer course. In it, she needs us to have...

"MS Word and PowerPoint (MS WORKS is NOT appropriate!!
Do NOT use MS Works.) Office Suite Version 2003 is highly
recommended, as Version 2007 documents CANNOT be opened in the labs. For those
of you working with Version 2007 at home, you will need to
re-save the file in the 2003 format before submitting!"

I do not have powerpoint at all, but is it possible to download a free version somewhere that's 2003, or is there another way I will be able to do this with another free program? thanks so much!!

Answer:ms powerpoint+suite 2003

What computer course are you taking? Will you have to create Power Point slide shows? Or do you just need the ability to view Power Point?Microsoft offers a trial version of Office 2007. You may also check at the student book store to see if they offer an academic discount on Office products.

Any Word files that I create do not appear on the Woprks Task Launcher. Why is this?I am also unable to use Calendar. It complains that I do not have a Microsoft file Msdart.dll.Where can I get this file?

Answer:Works Suite 2003

Word is a separate program to Works... Anything loaded with Word will only appear on it's own list of recently opened files where'as Works will only be able to list/open it's own...As for the Calendar, check to see if everything is installed ok, if not the missing file should be on your Works install CD inside one of the .cab files...

Reinstalling software on a new partitioned hard drive. Is there any way to install MS Works to a drive other than C: ? The automatic installer didn't even offer me a choice of where to install, just dumped it on the C: drive.

Answer:Installing MS Works Suite 2003

Is Works on a separate MS CD, or part of the PC "Recovery Disks"?

If its a separate CD it should not use an "Automated Installer" but if its part of the bundled software, then you probably have no choice.

I have completed my database. I put one column in alphabetical order, and proceed to another, the column I just alphabetized goes back the way it was. They won't all stay alphabetical. What's the deal? Help?

Answer:works suite 2003 database

This happens in Excel too, putting a column in alphabetical order is assumed to mean that you want all the rows to still contain the original values.

In Excel, you can highlight the data in the column and this sorts only that column - Then move on to the next column, etc.

If that doesn't work in Works, you may want to
sort the first column,
cut and paste the remaining columns into separate worksheets (one column, one worksheet) and
then sort them,
then copy them all back...

Can someone provide some detail about the differences in
content between Win7 system repair disc, system restore point and system image?
And perhaps I should add Dell ISO recovery image to the list.  I don't know (yet) if that is different from the Win7 system image option, or if the latter invokes the Dell ISO recovery image program instead.  If it matters, I have a Dell Precision
5510 laptop.
At the very least, is each option a superset of the other, perhaps in the order that I specify above?
Ideally, what are the folder names that each contains, if indeed their content can be described by complete folders?
I am trying to determine which of those options I need to create in order to have
complete recovery capability.
I have read the following support.microsoft.com articles:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17423/windows-7-create-system-repair-disc
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17101/windows-7-system-recovery-options
Those descriptions are indequate for my purposes, in part because of differences in terminology.
For example, the System Recovery Disc option "can help you repair Windows", whereas the System Restore (Point) option "restores your computer's
system files".
In that context, are "Windows" and "system files" synonyms content-wise; or is one a superset of the other; or do they have some non-overlapping content?
I suspect that the System Recovery Disc contains only "Windows"... Read more

Hello,
I've got a unique problem as System Restore does not work on my new HP laptop. Here's what happens:
I pick a restore point and all looks well until it's re-booted and then I get the following error message: "System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %Systemroot%\registration Destination: ComplusStaging"
I've tried deleting all restore points, running from a normal Windows sign in as well as "Safe" mode and using the F8 key (tapping during boot) and running it from the new "repair" facility. It will create a restore point but this problem happens when you try to use the restore point.
It's been suggested from HP tech-support (questionable answers) that this computer has this problem because the version of Windows was from an upgrade for Windows 7 not an original install yet I bought this computer refurbished from ECOST as advertised with Windows 7 O.S. If I thought it had a previous O.S. of course I wouldn't have bought it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi all,I was hoping someone could help me with these questions:1)  Currently I have Office Suite 2002 Profesional version.  I'm thinking of replacing it with the 2003 version.  Do I need to do anything special to save all my existing emails and files in Word and Excel, along with the format I've set up for my mail in Outlook and in my Word and Excel files, when I install the 2003 version?  Are there any extra steps I have to go through or will all my existing mail, files, and format be automatically transferred after the installation?2) From the little research I've done, Office Suite 2007 is not worth the trouble, as the improvements are not especially noticeable and ther new interfaces are quite different from the previous versions and will take time to get used to.  Is this true?  I'm relatively happy with the 2002 version and just want to have the additional  features available in the 2003 version without having to start all over again. Thanks for your help!

Answer:Replacing Office Suite 2002 with 2003 Version

Are you talking about Microsoft Office?Installing a new version of office usually just upgrades any old versions you have installed already.  Most files and settings are left intact.

estore system settings and previous versions of file is greyed out on my system, I may have disabled a required service for this, can anyone point me to the right direction for this?

As I'm about to try the X-Fi MB2 mod again as the last time I tried it my system was messed up that it wont even recognize my actual X-Fi card properly. So I'm thinking a system restore can help me with this experiment.

Answer:System Restore - Restore system settings and previous versions of file

I'd start with system restore. Make sure it's enabled.

System Restore - Enable or Disable

Other things to check are system restore configuration, making sure system protection is turned on, and some general troubleshooting steps for system restore.

Answer:System Restore runs, creates restore points, but can't restore

Hello & welcome to TSF,

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, restart the computer. If the error still occurs, search the hard drive for the presence of the Wininit.ini file, and then rename it. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer in Safe or DOS Mode.
2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
3. In the Named box, type wininit.ini.
4. In the Look in box, click Local hard drives, and then click Find Now.
5. Right-click the Wininit.ini file, click Rename, type wininit.xxx, and then click OK.
6. Close the Find Files window, and then run System Restore again.
7. If the previous steps do not resolve the problem, run the following command to repair the damaged portions of your registry:
scanreg /fix

System Restore Explorer is a tool which allows you to browse system restore points on your computer and select individual ones for deletion should you wish to free up some disk space. It also allows you to mount the contents of a restore point into a folder so that you can browse and copy individual files, without the need to perform a full system restore.
As many of us know, System Restore is a component for Windows which allows rolling back system files, registry settings and applications to a previous state. Although System Restore has a simple creation and restoration procedure, it does not provide an option to extract specific files from the previously stored system state. Hi. I'm using 500GB hdd(source) and 500GB ssd(destination) and I've some questions:
1. I Did 1:1 copy of disc (in norton GHOST) and on destination disk system restore is telling that i don't have restore points. Why?
2. Then On source disc I was trying to unlock some disc space by entering System Volume Information folder and deleting some files. I deleted all files larger than 3GB except one latest and one oldest. Now is like on destionation disc - system restore is telling that i don't have restore points. Why?

Answer:System restore didn't work. I have all system restore points

Hi Cbool,
Hope your settings look like this, and that in services volumn shadow copy in running.

Question: system suite 4

hi,had a trojan a few weeks ago which system suite 4 could not get rid of, during that time i had a pop up saying ssuite.exe is corrupt please delete so like a fool i did ,now when i try to use system suite it comes up windows cannot findc:\program files\ontrack\system suite\system suite.stg unable to install.can anyone help please

Answer:system suite 4

Can you uninstall from Add/Remove? If not, search the Ontrack folder for an uninstall.exe file.

What about just reinstalling (you may have tried that, but I was not clear on that from your post)?

Alternatively, if you have an Ontrack installation CD, just replace ssuite.exe.

(Isn't Ontrack/V-Com great? I'll never use another crappy Norton product. Ontrack's virus scanner doesn't use anywhere near so many resources and doesn't slow down even the older computers.)

Question: system suite 7

hi all,

i was asked to try to solve a problem.

when someone went to un-install this programme there was a problem with limited or no connectivity. as soon as ss7 was put back on, all was ok, connection was fine.. So i took it off again and checked everything i could think of, but could not solve the connection problem. NTL also could not come up with a solution.

The desktop is running xp, it is a cable connection through a set top box with NTL. The only thing i did not try is taking it off, then using system restore as i wanted to ask you all first.

any ideas please?

cheers guys.

Answer:system suite 7

Hi yelto

Here's a description of that software (if it's Vcom's) from Microsoft Marketplace --- http://windowsmarketplace.com/detail...itemid=3122059

It's rather a catch-all handy dandy - it includes a firewall, antivirus, antispyware, and some system utilities --- all of which can likely affect connectivity to some degree (especially the firewall). Some antivirus scanners, like the avast! antivirus web component, set up a proxy: through which your Internet traffic gets scanned before it reaches your desktop. If when you uninstalled the SS7, the proxy setup wasn't removed, that could explain the lack of Internet traffic.

Best of luck

Question: system suite 8

I have been using system suite 8 . i use it for cleaning fire wall etc... Been reading a lot of post and noticed other programs. Is the one i'm running good? Has anybody noticed any problems? Wondering if i should switch.

Answer:system suite 8

You would be better off asking about this in the Software Forum than here. None the admin/mod staff use this and no normal users can post to answer in your thread in the Malware Forum. This is not a big runner/popular program but that also does not mean it is not good. If you are happy with it and it is keeping your system clean then perhaps you should be the best judge of whether it is good enough for you.

My opinion based only on things I have read is it is slightly above average. My opinion on security suites in general is they all cause performance issues and many threads we get in malware for slow PCs are not malware problems. They are security suite problems.

Thought I'd pass on a nice piece of software that gives you lots of choices what junk you may want to clean out of IE or my computer.
Have been using it for a couple of months on XP Pro with good results. Requires a restart after selected user defined folders are cleaned. Have noticed that after first installing needs to be run a couple of times before it does a good cleaning.

Some programs, such as Adobe, bundle their downloads with McAfee VirusScan so you may not realize it's been installed. It should be listed in Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel and you can uninstall it from there.

Hello, its not recommended to run Combofix on your own. Combofix is a very powerful tool that can cause quite some damage. It should only be used under guidance of a trained helper. You can try to follow the steps in the Security Antivirus removal guide.

Greetings!
I am running Windows XP Home edition.
I have two problems with my PC. I hope you can give me some suggestions and advice?!
First, I am running System Suite 8 program from www.avanquest.com. This program deletes unnecessary temporary files, registries, provides antispyware program firewall. Now, I tried to download System Suite 9 trial version, and it will not install. Apparently, System Suite 8 didn't uninstall completely. When I try to install System Suite9, it tells me that the program is attempting to uninstall previous version, which is SS8.I get the same question,"The old system suite is still running , would you like to uninstall it?". I click yes, It tries to uninstall it, and it ask me the same question again. I contacted Avanquest technical support, no reply from them , of course. I tried to run MSciuu2 program that should uninstall artifacts, this program shows run time error. I tried to switch computer back to early time (System Restore) before I tried to install SS9, but System Suite 8 still there. When I click on Add/Remove, it tells me that it can't find the program.
Second, can you please tell me whether I can download similar free program, which works like System Suite? If so, where? I read about comodo.com.Free products They have PC cleaning utility, not sure whether it is real or fake. Please help

Hello, I am Patrick and I am from Austin, Texas. I hope someone can help me with this pest issue.

The first time my computer was infected with A/V Suites Maleware, I followed the advice here and it worked.

More than 1 month later, it got infected again.

This time I followed the same steps, but it doesn't work.

First, there is an error message: Error loading ftegp.dll.

Then it says "rundll32.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your anti-virus software now?"

I have repeated the removal process four times since yesterday, and each time it removed something; but after reboot, the malware is still there.

Looks like the removal process or the scanner needs some update to catch up with the virus writer.

I installed Systemsuite 11 (clean install, all windows programs closed, any firewall disabled, any scanning software disabled). After several repairs and reinstalls (yes, clean registry), Systemsuite will not activate the net defense (firewall) feature. The program recognized the problem and suggests a "fix" with the result that even the program cannot fix it. No matter what I do, net defense cannot be enabled from "within" (field cannot be clicked/checkmarked in the settings area) and net defense will not activate when clicked "enable". No, it is not my fault. No, I did not install it without removing and cleaning registry. I am just really annoyed!

Answer:Will the ZoneAlarm Suite or Kaspersky fit on my system?

YOu have more than enough ....(though you didn't mention the size of your hard drive, but I suspect it is over 60gb) ....You have Norton, so would not add Kasperski ( not a good idea to have two anti-virus softwares running) ...but zone alarm will be a good firewall for protection against intusions ....If you want to dump Norton, we can help you with that, though most here will give a recommendation to just download AVG anti-virus (freeware).

What is a very good system suite to do it all, virus , spyware and utilities. In the utilities part I need something that will clean up hard drive, defrag, clean up registery. I here all kinds of horror stoires about Norton and McAfee and some on Kerpersky. Right now I using Norton trial that came with computer, 50 days left. I don't like it. Any suggestions on something that is very good and not a resource hog.

Answer:system suite...ie norton, mcafee, karpersky

I'd go for NOD 32 Antivirus or even better the entire security suite from ESET.

Personally I chose BIT DEFENDER INTERNET SECURITY for one year license, but I'll be buying the NOD32 suite pretty soon.

One alternative - light on system resources is the Avira Premium suite. Quite good too.

Hi I read and used the Windows system suite removal guide where it states that Mbam will remove this infection from your system. I ran Mbam and it did what it said on the tin, No more problems relating to this except when I run combofix it tells me that Windows system suite is running. It sees it as a legitimate anti-virus alongside Avg. When this is a known rogue why would this be ? Any views on this would be welcome.

Had you purchased a licen activation key for Microsoft Office with the notebook? If so, there should be a license key with the paperwork your notebook was delivered with. If not, then all you had was the trial version that the notebooks are delivered with. You will need to purchase a key from Microsoft or an authorized vendor to install the Office suite..

When trying to manually delete all associated directories some files could not be deleted because the process was still running. I feel like an absolute moron but I somehow swapped the labels of c: and D: drive on my i5 Lenovo v570 running 8 gigs of ram and a replaced 750gb Seagate ssd hybrid.

I was having a ton of issues with my installed win 7 and was unable to boot to the one key recovery program or anything else for that matter, So my system was clearly compromised.

I spoke with Avast and the solution that they gave was that they could fix my registry, including factory reset for $119.00. I am currently on a pretty tight budget so I went out to try and track down a windows 7 disk. After 7 stores I gave up but came across this shiny box saying we will fix and super speed your computer and we even have a recovery disk included for Win 7. So I'm thinking great! An answer to my problem. So I save all of my graphic design work and anything else I wanted to keep on my arsenal of 12 flash drives that I usually have all dedicated to ready boost. And I launched the repair suite. Well I could see the Os on the D: drive so I left it alone but I was given delete as the only option for c: So I'm thinking this should work as good as the instructions state and the backup Windows 7 disk that was supposedly on the system suite version 12 CD by Avanquest, would allow for a clean install.
Wrong!!...

My Lenovo T60 crashed and was not able to be repaired. I do not know what caused my laptop to crash, but according to the PC Tech, the hard drive was reformatted. To be honest, I am here in the Philippines and did not bring my recovery disks with me & I am not so sure about the technical ability of the PC Tech.

That being said, he installed Windows XP Professional on my laptop and partitioned my hard drive. I have a 250 GB Western Digital HD. Before my laptop crashed, the drive was NOT partitioned. After the installation, I now have two drives, C, with 40 GB and D, with about 200 GB.

I lost a lot of photos and music, and other important documents. I decided to try to recover some of these files and used Recuva. The good news is that a lot of missing documents can be recovered. While listing the files and looking at them, I noticed that I had several System Restore points that I can recover.

My question is, can I use the most recent System Restore point that I recover and use that to reinstall all the missing software? I had MS Office 2007 Professional, MS Visio 2007, MS Project 2007, and other software that I do not have the installation disks with me.

From what I have read, System Restore will reinstall the system (registry, files, and software only) and not the My Documents folder.

If this can work, where do I put the system restore file? If need be, I can delete the new partition and resize the C partition, restore, and then repartition the hard drive afterwards.

Answer:Can I use a recovered System Restore point file to restore missing sw crashed laptop?

Since you already lost everything, try the System restore but first backup everything Recuva found onto a USB key. If your version Windows was not the same what the tech installed, it might not work. Also, he should have first ask you what to do with your files before formatting.
Otherwise you will have to wait till you can re-install everything.

Automatic restore points are no longer being created in System restore on Vista laptop.
Manually created restore points disappear after a short time.
The following are the figures relating to System Restore;
Used Shadow Copy storage space 0 B
Allocated Shadow Copy storage space 0 B
Maximum Shadow Copy storage space 3 GB
Every time I try to increase the allocation the Maximum storage space increases but not
the allocation, and I get a message saying
Successfully resized the Shadow Copy storage association.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

I find this often happens when there are disk read errors. Try doing a chkdsk /r then retry creating a restore point.

Installed Ubuntu on the computer containing Windows 7 only to see that the system restore was turned off. When I tried to turn it on, it gave error: Element Not Found. I restarted the computer and again tried by adjusting the amount of placeholder for system restore. Still the same error saying Element Not Found.
Could not find anything related on the Internet upon searching with the keywords System Restore Error - Element Not Found - Windows 7. Finally, thought of going ahead myself. When it says element not found, it conveys there is some problem with the system file that stores the settings of System Restore. And since the problem came up after I installed Ubuntu on another drive, I could think of two things: either the table entry of system restore file is corrupt or the entire system restore datafile is deleted or corrupt.
This is how I resolved the issue:
1. Opened Run dialog (Press Windows key + R)
2. Type SFC /scannow
3. Got a command prompt window showing me the progress of SFC command
The SFC command checks for your system files on Windows 7 and corrects the table entries in whatever file Windows stores information about system files. I guess it is called the file allocation table but am not sure.
Anyway, upon completion of SFC, I went ahead and deleted all existing restore points to make sure Windows 7 creates a new datafile for system restore.
I was then able to turn on System Restore and create restore points. Sharing my experience here so that peop... Read more

Hello everyone and thanks in advance for anyone that helps.
I am really troubled as I have been googling the hell out of this and trying many solutions with none of them working.

1) My pc first entered a loop when I tried to remove mcafee with their official remover. After the required reboot it could not enter windows no matter how time passed so I had to power it off.

2) Because I didn't like powering it off in the middle of something asking me NOT to power it off, I tried to system restore to a restore point 1 day prior to the event.
The system restore failed and gave me this error I believe 0x80070091
Googling to solve the problem asked me to rename the hidder windowsapps folder which requires some tinkering to do so. I tried to change the ownership and although I followed all the steps I could not rename this folder.
3) I then decided to try a system repair instead. It also failed and gave me this error C:\Windows\system32\logfile\srt\srttrail.txt.
Googling suggested that i do a chdisk or something on command prompt which I decided to not do before I backup my things since in the past I got wiped.

4) I backed up my computer and decided to do a windows 10 system reset. There are supposedly 3 options. A) reset but keep your files, B) reset but keep nothing and C) factory reset.
Not all PCs have factory reset and mine neither. I did option B and when asked about the sub option of making a full clean drive ( to protect you from getting your deleted ... Read more

Hello all, the entire Office 2003 suite one day looks old like 2000 or Windows 2000 icons in general.

Does anyone know why this happened and how it could be fixed?

Thanks.

Answer:Entire Office 2003 suite looks like Office 2000

This had happened to me once but in office 2007. It happened when I tried to open an older file type so It went into compatibility mode, which also changes the layout.

Not sure if its the same thing with office 2003 but go into options, advanced, and see if you can find something like compatibility options or layout.

Anyway if its not their your looking for some kind of option like that so snoop around all the options, views, and windows menus.

My questions are on Windows 7 System Restore, Restore Points and Backups; specifically, potentially using a Backup as a Permanent Restore Point.

Here is the situation...

About a month ago, I did a complete Factory Restore on my HP desktop and returned it to it's factory condition. After removing the bloatware and performing all the necessary Windows Updates, the Factory Restore process went off without any issues.

Today, however, I needed to use System Restore due to an issue I was having with multiple monitors that I just couldn't figure out. So, I went into System Restore and found a "Date andTime" of a restore point that was right around the same time I did the Factory Restore. That Restore Point was also the oldest and since I knew it was a known & good restore point, I decided to use it. That restore point "Description" was labeled "System Image Restore Point" and the "Type" was labeled "Backup." (See Image)

I don't recall setting up or doing any backups although, between Windows Backup, Norton Backup and HP's Backup utilities some type of backup obviously happened. FYI, I hate having all those options, as I'd rather use native Windows tools. In any case, today, I used the System Restore using the System Image Restore Point labeled as Backup and, after performing a few minor Windows Updates, everything went off without a hitch and my monitor problem was solved.

However, seeing that Restore point b... Read more

Hello,
I turned on my computer and realized that all of my files and programs were missing amongst all restore points. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and no viruses were found. Is there any way to recover the lost data or is it a lost cause. I have a Toshiba, Windows 7, Intel Pentium. I am praying that I can recover this.
Thanks,
Ryan

Answer:All files/ programs delete and system restore points..Is it possible to restore data?

Check your user's folder, are you using the same logon account ? Sometimes windows logon fails and you get directed to a temporary account + folders and all your files will seem missing, when instead you are not looking at your previous documents folder.

I have 8gb of space allocated to System Restore, all monitoring my C partition only. This space is always at least 85-90% used according to the System Protection screen. In the past I have had at least 15 restore points to choose from after ticking "show more restore points." But today I went to do a restore and there were only 7 points, despite almost the full 8gb allocation being shown as nearly full, as usual.

This is happening despite relative consistency in the size of my C partition at about 60gb. As always, I have the "restore system settings and previous versions of files" option chosen. And I've checked to ensure none of the drive's other partitions were inadvertently added to monitoring.

I've had Windows 7 for about three months, and saw a similar situation about two months ago. At that point I turned off System Restore and turned it back on, and things returned to normal. But now it's happening again, and this time I don't want to lose the Restore Points I currently have. Besides, the fact that this is happening makes me both curious and uncomfortable.

I've been creating 60% of my restore points manually. Is it possible those, for some reason, use a lot more space than automatically-generated points?

Would appreciate any ideas on what could be going on, and how to address it.

Answer:Allocated System Restore space holds far fewer restore points now

I suspect that one of your more recent restore points is taking more than the usual amount of space. This can vary widely. This could be due to a newly installed application or some kind of update.

On the few occasions I have used system restore it has always been the most recent restore point. The further back you go the more likely it is that the restore will fail or cause more problems than it solves.

Recently I had an issue which I have discussed here:http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...To resolve the issue I tried to restore my system to an earlier date but it failed. I have tried different restore points but no success.

Answer:Win8 System Restore fail to restore to earlier date - POST 2

mmm recall monitoring your previous post. This suggestion is trčs long shot... Nip over to:http://www.tweaking.com/content/pag...download and run the very excellent, free - and safe to use utility over there.Do NOT use the very obvious big green download button at the top of the page; rather scroll down a wee bit to the four mirror site links, and download it that way. The big green button is an ad promoted item which you neither need nor want. Sadly just about all sites these have paid for stuff carefully positioned to watch the eye; and lead one to think that's the download button to use for item you actually want - and it isn't.The utility will go through the windows installation and fix anything it finds that is not as ought be. It can be run in normal mode; but they also suggest it's better in safe-mode. It offers a few suggestions re' running it - and it's wise to adopt them all. I n fact it will actually do the assorted routines automatically if you let it. It will back up the registry as part of the process; so no need of concern there.I have found it to be very useful couple of times when dealing with apparently unresolveable issues.

System Restore not auto creating Restore Points (Solved) - the solution is here ..
Problem:

After run some cleaning software - with the option to overwrite the free hard disk space (to hide deleted files) with some random data - System Restore has stopped the automatic creation of Restore Points, and purged existing Restore Points.

The solution:

In the Events Viewer / System, at the date of run cleaning software, you read:
'Event ID 107. Source: SRService. Description: The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not enough disk space available on the drive \\?\Volume{95e0434a-0fff-11dd-8ae4-806d6172696f}\. System Restore will automatically resume service once at least 200 MB of free disk space is available on the system drive.'

So System Restore stops working, because all free space is overwrited with this random data, so taken. For System Restore, there is no free space.

Solution: ex. in CCleaner (in 'Advanced' section) check 'Wipe free space' for all drives (look on Options / Settings) and make cleaning (about 30 minutes). After that, uncheck the 'Wipe free space' box.
Now System Restore will automatically work again, creating the Restore Points every 24 hours.
System Restore requires the machine to be in an idle state to create system check points ( .. if you go sleep, close your PC ..).
To check immediately if Windows gets to automatic Restore Points snapshots, tourn 'off', then 'on' ... Read more

Hello everyone, not sure why but I get an error every time I open the System Restore. I rarely have to use a restore point as I regularly maintain my computer and check for viruses and malware, but I would like to have the option just in case. When I open System Properties, and click the System Protection tab, I get this error and am unable to create a Restore Point. Attached is a screenshot and a DxDiag.txt. Any insight to this problem would be helpful, perhaps I have some windows feature disabled that I might need enabled, I am not sure. I recently did a complete reformat of my hard drive and a fresh install of Windows, maybe two months ago, and somewhere along the line I must have removed/disabled something I need for System Restore. Even third party maintenance software is unable to create restore points, such as TuneUp Utilities 2014, AVG Internet Security 2014, and UVK. I'm sure the fix for this is simple, I am just unaware of it. Thanks in advance.

Since upgrading system restore is not creating restore points automatically. I have to create them manually and then they are being deleted automatically every 3 - 7 days. I tried allocating more disk space to restore but that has done no good. I also use an uninstaller program which used to create restore points but although it tells me it is it's not! I feel very vulnerable now only having a week's worth of restore points - there have been times I've been glad to be able to restore back a few months! Never had trouble before the latest upgrade and haven't knowingly changed any settings. Be very grateful if anyone can solve this for me. Thanks Flissa
