In the name of silence or reasonable quiet

Question: In the name of silence or reasonable quiet

A four month old mid-range factory built computer.Functions exactly as it should, but ignoring the sound advice "If it aint broke don't fix it" i would like it to sound less like a collection of busy fans, which it has!I am prepared to spend some more and replace the PSU, CPU's fan and even the case fan.The video card fan seems blameless, stalling for one moment doesn't change the rushing noise. The PSU is probably the most justifiable replacement. It is a bog standard ATX of 300w.I wonder if click here will do the trick. (5th down the list) the 435W job)? The case fan is a standard affair drawing warm air and pushing it out of the back. It is possibly an 8cm fan (approx 7cm between screws) and draws its power from the mobo.Probably not contributing much windrush but suggestions welcome? The CPU fan sits naked on a sort of 4 legged gantry over a very elaborate dome of fine fins and Intel trade mark. Doesn't seem responsible for much noise, but again, any comments.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: In the name of silence or reasonable quiet

are you positive it aint the graphics cooler as mines noisy as hell! you could always invest in some heat pipes that will cut out most of the noise!

I have "quiet hours" turned on from 10p-7am, 7 days a week, since I don't want Facebook or SMS notifications going off in the middle of the night.
I noticed this morning that my 5:45am alarm didn't work, even though I had it turned on. Did "Quiet Hours" being turned on silence the alarm?
Luckily I woke up on time, but I depend on my alarms on my phone to wake me up. At the same time, I don't want Facebook notifications or SMS messages to wake me up when I don't want to be woken up--

Answer:Does turning on "quiet hours" silence alarms?

NO, but it can happen to some 3rd party alarm apps.

I have a RM650 Corsair Ultra-Quiet power supply that is NOT quiet at all if anything when i'm gaming its loud, the back end is not in a corner or anything, in an open room, could it be my motherboard or graphics card that needs a high demand of power? These are my specs, please tell me why it is not ultra quiet, I don't really have a problem with it, it's just I thought it was ultra quiet.

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

Question: Silence!

Hey, my computer is kick *** except for one thing....... it doesnt beep. Thats right i t doenst beep or make anything from within the case I have p4p800se (love it) and for whatever it does not beep whil posting or make another utterance from within the case like when u press shift 5 times and all that. So i was wondering if anyone new the speaker location if their is one (i think mine never came withone) and where i could buy an internal speaker for my comp. Thanks for any help! <And YES i am newbie!>

You WANT the beep?

Okay, besides pointing out an obessive oddness, I would suggest you either look at your mobo for a set of internal speaker pins, an onboard speaker tower, or that you just say "beep" each time you reboot.

[If you're going for the last suggestion, look in the back of your mobo manual for the proper way to beep under the "Beep Codes" section.]

Answer:What is a reasonable restart time?

About 2 minutes in total here. Four users. If the PC hasn't been shut down or restarted for several days, it takes more time for Windows to shut down all running processes.Once Windows has actually shut down all processes, it takes about 45 seconds for it to go through the restart/boot-up before getting back to the Welcome screen.

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. The adviser was quite aggressive saying that I should have this done straight away otherwise I might spread the virus on the internet and my ISP will cut me off.I'd be grateful for views on Norton's stance.

Answer:Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

Noticed today that switches with 10 GbE ports are starting to become quite low in price on eBay. Is this a sign that the price is finally starting to move or are these switches junk, lacking features or not usable to attach a server or two and start playing with the speeds?

I'm mostly seeing HP 2900's but there are others too.

edit: maybe there are just rear stacking ports? The fronts must just be sfp 1 GbE?

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

Question: Audio Silence

Hi, I'm hoping someone out there can help with this issue. It seems the rule with computers is fix one problem cause another, so here's mine.

Windows ME was randomly freezing everytime I left it alone for more than a minute, so I got Windows xp home ed. OS is fine, but now I have no sound at all. Checked drivers, reinstalled (I'm using Turtle Beach Santa cruz if that matters), all the little green checks are there and everything but no sound. Here's another weird thing for you to ponder... On analog output the speakers emit nothing, on digital they emit a weird static buzz when sound should be playing. The speakers are fine, they worked the day before yesterday when I got WinXP and they have power. I've tried everything I could think of, which isn't much but....Please help me out of the cone of silence!!

Okay, here's the deal. For the last few days, when I start up my comp, I get an error message that's titled "Microsoft visual c++ runtime library," followed by "Runtime error! Question: Silence & Style?

I have an Aspire X-Dreamer II computer case and an Antec TruePower 330W. The fans in my case are rather loud, but they are very bright and cool looking. I decided that silence is better than style, and I plugged the fans into the "fan only" cord that comes from the PSU. This makes all the fans spin at a much slower RPM, but it also dims the LED's on the fans. Is there any kind of fan controller out there that will get the LED's running full blast, but the fan spinning slower? If not, are there any quiet fans that have a nice glow? I was thinking about drilling out the 80mm fan holes to 120mm in my case...would this be a good idea?
While I'm talking, I guess I should also mention that the 3 front LED's stopped working on my case, and the backlit temperature monitor doesnt work anymore. I bought the case from back in march, is there an RMA policy still in effect for this case?

Answer:Silence & Style?

The light problem is probably a wire connector that comes apart . Its located on the right side of the case as you look at it.

Hello to all the knowledgable types out there!I've just purchased a new PC from Evesham, with an Athlon 2700+ and Radeon 9700 Pro, and like many people with such a system I switched it on for the first time...and wondered if it was going to fly across the room! The basic fan noise is fairly loud, and under a heavy graphics load it is even more noisy. So, I'd like to hear from anyone who knows, what products are good (eg Quiet PC have a PSU which is AMD approved - I notice a lot of PSUs don't seem to have this accolade) - I'm looking more at changing the case fan and PSU than stuffing the case with damping foam. Although I'm no novice as far as inserting PCI cards goes, I've never changed a PSU, case or CPU fan so I'd also like to know how tricky the process is? I don't want to cause my brand new jetplane (er...I mean PC! ;-) ) to blow up!To anyone who responds - thanks for taking the time to read this and reply!

Question: Recording Silence

My friend is in Europe, and while he is gone, I figured I might do something to explain what happened while he was gone.

We both enjoy listening to our Police Scanners, as we both wish to be Officers one day, so I thought while he was gone, I could just plug in my scanner (to the wall so I don't waste batteries, and to the computer so I can record it). I am using Total Recorder, only because I have seen it working and NOT record the silence from recordings. But my scanner seems to have a VERY minimal constant sound output from the actual scanning itself. I wish to find a program, or a solution to the one I'm using now.

There are some things that aren't really an option, like dealing with the silence, and then using an Audio Editor to remove the silence later, but 1, I don't want to do that, and 2, my program, Adobe Audition, doesn't work with Windows Vista.

The first thing I want to do is try and find a different program that will only record when something is loud enough, so I can filter out the "silence". Sure the transmissions will be all together and when they say the time, it will sound odd because a whole hour could go by without anyone saying anything (no more than an hour... ever) and then you jump ahead an hour, but it's better than HUGE audio files on my computer and my friend having to listen to an hour of silence. So just something that can record from Line In, and have some sort of filter type thing for the "silence"... Read more

Question: silence reigns

OK peopleyou have helped solve my download problem. Now my sound has stopped working!!! I am hoping these are teething troubles of a relatively new computer plus I have not yet heard good things about Vista, but I am stuck with it. Any way, the sound issue, this problem is affecting both accounts and when I go into "manage audio devices" on one hand it says that the speakers are working normally and then in a different place it is trying to tell me that the jack is not plugged in ( I can assure you it is!!). Nothing has been muted or had the volume turned down.

Okay, here's the deal. For the last few days, when I start up my comp, I get an error message that's titled "Microsoft visual c++ runtime library," followed by "Runtime error! C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe This application has requested runtime to terminate it in an unusual way." I've read other threads from people who've had this message pop up and it usually seems to affect their internet connection or certain programs. For me, it has somehow disabled my sound. The sound is there when windows starts up (I get that Doo-a-looo-diddy-dooo sound at startup), but after the pop-up comes it's gone. I've tried terminating svchost in tsk manager (the one that takes up 15 ks or so. I went through Administrative Tools-Services and found that my windows audio was stopped, but when I started it, nothing changed.... I take that back. Prior to starting it, when I tried to play a file in Window's Media, they all turned orange with an exclamation mark. After I started it, it acted as if it was playing but no sound came still. I've run ad-aware, spyware terminator, anti-virus and regcure, none of which has obviously helpedI'm operating on xp sp2 and here is my Hijacks log.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 4:51:27 PM, on 1/22/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16762)Boot ... A.K.A. "Help I've cloned and I can't boot up"

First my specs: Win XP Pro -- 3.0 P4 HT -- 2048GB PC400DDR -- not RAID

Using advice from a couple of previous threads here and Norton Ghost 2003, I cloned my old, whining, about to fail 60GB Maxtor EIDE boot drive to a partition of a brand new 400GB Western Digital SATA drive. During the process, when Ghost went to reboot the system, I aborted by flipping the power switch instead of pressing F4 as I'm always asked in the first screen during boot up. I then disconnected the old boot drive (and my other HD just for good measure). I changed the boot sequence in BIOS to SATA drive first (it was listed, ergo, we know my motherboard sees it), but the system will not boot up. It just asks me to insert boot disk (or some such message informing me it can't find the boot files).

Is this because my new drive is SATA? Have I screwed something else up, do you suppose? I cloned the 18GB of data from the old 60GB boot drive onto a 30GB partition of the new with no problems noted by Norton -- was the reduction a problem after all?

I have yet to allow the system to see both drives simultaneously, but I'm wondering if I should just reformat the SATA drive and make it a storage disk and instead clone my boot disk to the second EIDE hard drive (not new, but with no known faults). I will if y'all tell me I should. Thanks for your thoughts.

With sincere apologies to Simon & Garfunkle.

The sound card worked until I was forced to reformat the hard drive and re-install Win98SE. The system is an AT&T (yup, I'm the guy that has the only one they made, I think) Globalyst 640 with 96 MB and a Pentium (no Roman numeral) 100.

The only thing I could find on the card was "Crystal 4289 PCI". Plug and Pray detects something but it won't tell me what it is other than "Other Device" with no driver.

I'm an OK smart guy with a regressive computer gene. I have checked the other posts with "sound" in them and none of them seemed to be appropriate to my situation.

So, in the mortal words of Mr. T, "Pitty the fool" and help me out here. The reward I offer is my undying awe.

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?! It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base. What they offered is even more absurd! They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it. We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!! Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

this is what i am looking at. and im hoping to get some suggestions and hopfuly hear from someone who has it- - ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Answer:help picking the best reasonable 1155 mobo available

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Answer:what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. Hello everyone.Should I replace my old Vostro 460 with the new XPS8900.In addition to the performance the new computer should be mostly silent, as much as the Vostro 460 is really silent.I would therefore like to know if the XPS is a very silent machine or if I should opt for some other model.Thank you very much, Anghelu.

Answer:XPS 8900 - silence or noise?

I don't have an 8900, but we have a few 8700s and a couple of 8500s and they are the same case and same fans, and overall they are fairly quiet in my opinion.
They are quiet, but not silent. The noisemakers are: (in no particular order)
1) power supply fan
2) rear case fan
3) CPU fan
4) hard drive
5) graphics card fan
If the system is on the floor, under a desk the noise is barely noticeable.
That said, I've replaced PSUs for the two 8700s to support gaming graphics cards, and the gaming cards are much quieter than the GT 635 graphics card with the tiny fan. Depending on the card in the 8900 the fan on the graphics card might be the loudest part.
I think the PSU fan is next loudest, and the PSU has also been replaced.
I've also replaced the rear case fans with Noctua fans and they not only move more air, they are quieter than the stock fan.
The CPU heatsink fan is not loud, but it is not silent.
HDDs you can barely hear, but the sound is there.
I'm not including the optical drive because they are noisy when used no matter what.

My name is Aric. I use XP Office. I am having some mysterious issues with my pc. Generally I can figure out whats wrong by way of error messages etc. This time however I only have a few things to go on. They are as follows.

After my computer has been on for about 10 to 20 minutes the sound card seems to become inaccessible. When I go into the sound devices menu all the sound card options are greyed out.

Shortly after that the curvy blue edges of my windows become hard edged and grey like win95.

Certain menu options stop working, like the task manager.

My pc attempts to reboot, when it reaches the point where its scanning the memory it freezes.

The only thing I can think of that I changed around the time the problem started is I took my pc online for the first time. I had planned on never putting it online as I use it mostly for recording audio, so I do all my online stuff with my laptop. But I bought New Vegas and quickly discovered some A-hole thought it would be a great idea to make it so you have to go online to finish the installation. While I was online I got the latest version of winrar, updated iTunes and thats all I can remember doing. I thought it might be a virus so I installed AVG but a full scan didnt uncover anything. Anyone have any ideas? I tried to do a system restore but the furthest back I can go is the day after the problem began.

Answer:Silence. Curtains. Reboot.

AVG isn't too good at virus detection so it's still very possible your PC is infected with something, but we can't help you with that on this forum - some bright spark may give you bad advice and make the matter worse. We have a dedicated forum for malware issues (or suspected malware issues) here:

If and when your PC is declared virus free but you still have the above problems, by all means post here again.

I have 5 Kingwin fans attached to my case, two of which are on the side.

That's the fan.

My problem is that when the fans are running on the side panel, it makes a loud, low-pitched hum.

The stock case fans that came on the side did not make this noise, but they were no where near as powerful as the kingwins.

The kingwins themselves are as loud as the stock case fans, which were dead quiet, it's just that they seem to be too powerful for the side of the case and its causing the aluminum to vibrate enough to make this noise.

An mp3 of the noise is attached.

Is there anything I can put on the case to eliminate this noise?

Answer:loud case to silence?

with higher air flow you have higher rpm's and with higher rpm's you have more vibration...... and what are you running that you need 5 high speed fans?

Im currently running Norton Antivirus 2005.. but I'm wondering what everyone is using out there on there gaming/workstation machines.

Symantec Corp?

Whats the most unobtrusive, best at detecting virus, etc...? I usually tend to go with a program that the majority of users like me use.

Answer:The antivirus thread to silence them all..

I Nod32 it...

Man don't you love this..

I've also been using Avast as well, I love it.
It literally tells you when it finds a virus, and it
sounds like Kit from Nite-Rider, well alittle...

I have recently (within the last week) purchased a new box and am engaged in setting it up. Components are:
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
Gigabyte EP45-UDSL mobo
XP Home SP3
Realtek High Definition Audio plus USB Audio Device.

Problem - I can't get any audio at all - not even the system beeps. Absolute dead silence. Some months ago (I seem to be plagued by audio problems) Phantom 010 provide a really useful audio checklist, and I followed this faithfully - Windows Audio service is set to Automatic and Started, no yellow queries or red crosses in the Device Manager, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, checked all the levels and other relevant details in Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I've seen the message that says "Driver is enabled and working properly" - I've even made sure that the sound system is turned on. Nothing.

The one clue I have is in running dxdiag through DirectXWhen I ran the sound tests, I got the following message:
Failure at Step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)
I have no idea what this means, but it is the only indication of anything being amiss (apart from the silence).

I will be most grateful if anyone can suggest a useful line of approach, bearing in mind that this is a brand new system and (in theory) should run OK.

Many thanks

I am trying to finish up a new build that I started some months ago (but got interrupted). The motherboard is a MSI MS-7641 ver 3.0, CPU is AMD, socket AM3.

No peripherals nor O/S yet installed.

When I power up (to see if there is video output from the mobo), the fans come on, but no video, no beep.

Even without a CD or HDD, there should be video output and beeps from the mobo.

Any ideas appreciated as what might be problem? Would have thought maybe dead mobo, but the fans turn on.

Hi, I don't know if this counts as software or hardware, as I am not sure what the problem is!
I have recently put a MSI CD-RW Ms-8348 drive into my PC.
I am using the onboard sound card on my ECS K7S5A motherboard, which is a C-Media AC97.
I am trying to record some MP3's onto a cd to listen to on my DVD player.
Whenever I try to record the cd, using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, everything goes ok until i try to play the cd. All the tracks are on the cd, and are all the right length, but there is no sound. This is the same on the cd and in my dvd player, which also plays the cd, but with no sound! The drive records data cds without any problems.
I have recorded about 7 coasters now, using different media.
I have connected a sound cable from the drive to the Cd audio in on the motherboard, which didn't work.
I have turned off the digital audio on the drive, which didn't work.
I have checked all the levels of sound, and tried using the Cd-at-once and track-at-once record options, finalising the session and the whole cd. Nothing works.
If anyone can shed any light on the problem, I would be very grateful.

I have a Latitude E6410 on which I am running Windows 10 Professional. When I feed external audio into the microphone jack it plays out the external speaker jack. I have tried unchecking the"listen to" box in Windows but this does not correct the situation like it does on other computers I own running Windows 10. How can I stop the mic audio from comming out the speaker audio??

Answer:Need to silence my audio input.

Windows 10 is not supported on that model so you might find that not everything functions the same as when using a supported OS.
Make sure you have an IDT audio driver installed, like this version for Win7. Install it with compatibility mode:
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive. 2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.

Hey everyone, I've been very angry and dissapointed lately.
The fact is, my computer is extremely loud, something is screaming when its running.
I am led to believe its my cpu fan, because when i turn it myself, i can hear it grind a little.

So, I was wondering if you guys here had any tips on making my rig quieter.
Anything will help,
Thanks in advance.

Edit: Or if its hopeless, could someone recommend a good socket 478 cooler?
(I think zalmans are too big for the mobo.)

Answer:how to silence loud system

Water cool it. Nothing quieter and as effective.
Corsair make 'em as do ASETEK. I'm using a Corsair w/c setup atm to cool a o/c P4. The Asetek unit is far better tho, higher flo rates and double the cooling. Google them as I'm in OZ and you are (I assume) in the States so can't supply links.

Check it out :grinthumb

By disabling Power On Self Test (POST) in the BIOS or opening your PC up and disconnecting the speaker from the motherboard connector.

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

In short: any help vastly appreciated. This is the second time in two years I've lost my vacation photos, last year my camera got stolen Maybe I need to ... Read more

Answer:files present, have a reasonable size, do not open

As an aside, save all your pictures to CD or some other source, and then you can access them with almost any viewer...

I essentially skipped Vista completely (bought it with the hardware, installed it, then discarded it) and started with the 7000 beta. Am currently toying with 7077 on a new, 3-week-old monster machine that needs to shift into productive use very soon.

Moving the "Documents and Settings" folder was easy back in XP days. It appears to be a lot more complicated now. However, after a bit of reading, I've come up with the following:
Clean install (in this case, 7077 x64) as user 'username'
Enable 'Administrator' account
Log out of 'username' and log into 'Administrator'
Continue with computer setup using the 'Administrator' account
Delete both the account and files for 'username'
Hack the registry to alter the location for new user accounts
-- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]
-- Replace '%SystemDrive%\Users' with 'D:\Users' for the 'ProfilesDirectory' key
Create a new account for 'username' with admin privileges which appears as D:\Users\username\...
Log out of the 'Administrator' account (leaving it active and located in the C:\Users folder)
Log into the new 'username' admin account and go about business as usual.
(There will be four additional non-admin accounts created on this machine -- all of them located in the D:\Users folder.)
My question is: Does this seem a valid approach to separating the Users folder from the system drive? Or, am I setting myself up for problems?

Answer:Moving \Users folder ... Is this a reasonable approach?

Hi, I've planned to buy a good LTE WWAN adapter for my T440 recently, but going though many negative opinions on officially supported EM7345 I think it's point less to spend many on it. I really like EM7455 but I am sure I will fall into the problem with "unsupported WWAN card ..." which I know I can work around, but would prefer a clean solution instead. Is there any good alternative to EM7345 for T440 to get it working out of the box? Ideal would be official BIOS with EM7455 enabled in BIOS whitelist, which I believe is unlikely.

I have installed Windows 7 on my unit, but Sound Blaster 5.1 Live is not compatible. Any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:Reasonable priced Windows 7 sound card

Take a quick look at this post

Sounds like you might be able to download the XP drivers and then right-click and run in compatibility mode using XP SP2 as your choice.

Might be worth a quick try.

Hi guys!!

Okay, my camcorder is a Panasonic GS-150 (I bought it 1 year ago and still not for sure if that was a good purchase or not, but oh well i'm stuck with it now) and I mostly use it to make movies w/friends and family. I write screenplays and direct them, act in them, what not and I'm hoping to finally upgrade to a better video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. Now, I have no big complaints about WMM, its been very kind to me and user friendly, but I've way over-used all the transitions and video effects they have to offer. Also, my ideal software would have the ability to put a clip on top of a clip. I don't even know if that's possible, but it sounds like a neat idea to me sense I don't have a green screen handy! I am just a meager wanna-be M. Night Shyamalan here My budget is minimal and I'm hoping not to exceed $80.

Any advise, opinions, tips & tricks and what-not is very appreciated!! THANKS GUYS! YOUR AWESOME!

Answer:Best Video Editing Software @ A Reasonable Price

Hi mightyflail. On an $80.00 budget, you won't do much better then Pinnacle Studio Plus 10.5 Titanium.Looks like it's on sale as well.

I am using a Laptop with Vodaphone 3 G Data Card to pick up my E-Mails when I am on the road and am finding it very expensive. It is a pay as you go Does anyone have any idea if there are any that are reasonably priced to use? My definition of "very expensive" is £46.50 for a period 12.4.2009 to 28.4.2009.Two examples of my messages are as follows.216.514 KB = 0.4233.167.904 KB = 6.188 I use BT Yahoo ISP when at home.

Answer:Is there a reasonable cost 3G Data Card Service?

I have a Mobile Broadband 'dongle' using pay-as-you-go on the "3" network. A £10 top-up is valid for 30 days and allows up to 1 Gigabyte of data to be transferred. A £15 top-up is valid for 30 days and allows up to 3 Gigabytes of data to be transferred. click here

I need to replace a TP-Link N600 router that is constantly dropping G-wifi. The N seems stable enough but TP-Link customer disservice is working at it's peak. Totally hopeless. I have been trying to get them to to take it back for warranty-repairs and all they keep telling me to do is update the firmware.

I had done that before I even contacted them the first time. I am now using some of their Beta firmware and still no change. I have had it with TP-Link.

So, looking for 4 x Gigabit LAN, G and N wifi at 450 to 600 Gb. An AC-wifi might be nice, but when N is working right, it does all I need. I still need G for my windows phone. {sigh}

I have just tried Zyxel, Edimax and Netgear. Returned them all as the TP-Link when running right had much better power output on both G and N ate distances. Linksys, not even slightly interested in, so what's left? If a Buffalo, I'd want a non-DD-Wrt version. DD-Wrt is great but too time consuming to configure.

Anyone with personal experience of a router they love that doesn't cost a $100+, care to chime in here.

Answer:Decent Router at reasonable price? NOT TP-Link

I got a little-known Router from Western Digital [yeah, the hard drive company] over a year and a half ago, cost $60. When I first got it I'd have to turn the Wi-Fi off [switch on the front] about once a week to re-establish it. After about a month I got a firmware update for it and haven't had a problem since. It's been running 24/7 since 9/11 but we had a transformer blow down the road that day and were without power 6AM until about 7PM that day. Didn't help to also have 10" of snow.

I've set up D-Link and Netgear Routers and haven't had call-backs on them yet.

Top Security Firm RSA Tries to Silence Blog.

RSA security, one of the top security firms in the country, has sent takedown notices to a blogger and his hosting company in an effort to silence his discussion of a vulnerability found on a bank web site that RSA helps monitor, according to the blogger.

The firm has accused the blogger of trademark infringement — a common tactic of companies like Wal-Mart and Farmers Insurance Group to silence criticism — and of running a “fraudulent” web site that misleads the bank’s customers.

What's up with RSA??? The blogger has a real point!
